FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear friends, Of all the shows in this season’s Willis Broadway Series, perhaps the most anticipated is Kinky Boots. Winner of six 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this production boasts a “dream” creative team. Director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell was last represented here with his staging of Legally Blonde. Book-writer Harvey Fierstein penned the shows La Cage Aux Folles and Hairspray, and Grammy Award winner Cyndi Lauper made history with Kinky Boots as the first solo woman ever to receive the Tony Award for Best Score. Based on a true story and the subsequent 2005 film of the same name, Kinky Boots is still one of the hottest shows on Broadway and on national tour. I saw the show pre-Broadway in Chicago and then attended the opening night in New York, and I loved it. In addition to being very entertaining, the show deals with real-life issues like the intricacies of father/son relationships and accepting others for who they are. Kinky Boots is the second of three shows we are presenting this season in which Des Moines Performing Arts has an investment in both the Broadway and national touring productions through our involvement in the Independent Presenters Network (IPN). The IPN is a consortium of leading Broadway presenters from all parts of the country, and the group regularly invests in Broadway productions. We are especially pleased to be working again with Hal Luftig, one of the lead producers of Kinky Boots, as the IPN has previously partnered with him on such shows as Thoroughly Modern Millie and Legally Blonde. The Des Moines Civic Center is the home of the Willis Broadway Series, and we are proud to bring you the very best of Broadway direct from New York. Now, enjoy the show, and… “Everybody Say Yeah”!

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear friends, Welcome! We are so pleased that you are with us. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do. Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater, Temple Theater and Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts. The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series. Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 55,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide teachers with new strategies for the classroom. And, I hope you will mark your calendar for June 1, 2015, when we celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors at the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase. All of these programs require donations to operate successfully. I invite you to join us in our mission by becoming a Donor. Your gift will impact many, as will the opportunities for you to explore everything that is Des Moines Performing Arts. To learn more about attending any of our performances or making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Enjoy the show!

Assembling a Dream Team for
Kinky Boots, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, was created by a dream team of talented and original artists; pop icon Cyndi Lauper, who won a Tony for her infectious score, three-time Tony-winning librettist Harvey Fierstein, and director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who also took home a Tony for his dances.

Cyndi Lauper, who grew up listening to Rodgers and Hammerstein cast albums, took to writing for characters and dramatic situations, like a duck to water. “Everybody asks the question about pop songs and theater songs,” she says. “I just think that, in some Photo by Gavin Bond Jerry Mitchell, Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper ways, they’re very similar; and in other ways, they’re not. DES MOINES PERFORMING ARTS JEFF CHELESVIG
Celebrates 20 Years of Leading the Show at Des Moines Performing Arts
I
n January 1995, Jeff Chelesvig started a role that would forever change the landscape of performing arts in Iowa, as he took the helm at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines. He started a legacy that would include the implementation and programming of the popular Willis Broadway Series and six other series, leading the creation of the Temple Theater, and building a reputation of Des Moines being a sought after tour stop in the arts and entertainment industry. Twenty years later, we asked Jeff, President & CEO of Des Moines Performing Arts, to reflect on his successful tenure and what he would like to see happen for the organization in the future.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Q
What attracted you to Des Moines and working for what was formerly the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines? My predecessor, Gordon Smith, was retiring in 1994. As a favor, he asked if I would just consider applying for his position, so I submitted a résumé. I was happy in my job at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, FL, but through the interview process, I decided this was something to go after. I thought the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines was underutilized and there was a lot of potential to grow. It was also nice because I’m from Iowa (Belmond) and my family lives here.
Q
You’ve accomplished so much in your tenure at Des Moines Performing Arts. What are some of your proudest accomplishments? Creating the Betts Broadway Series, now the Willis Broadway Series, in 1997 and watching its success has been great. Prior to that, every Broadway show was sold individually. It’s been a thrill watching the growth and impact of our education and community engagement outreach, like what we do with the Applause Series and the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards. And finally, I would say being involved in the creation of the Temple Theater in the Temple for Performing Arts Building. The opening of that building dramatically changed that end of downtown Des Moines. We were the real pioneers there.
Did You Know? · In 1995, the annual attendance
at the Civic Center was 215,920. Today, the average attendance has grown to more than 320,000.
· Des Moines Performing Arts
operates four venues: The Civic Center, the Temple Theater and the Stoner Theater. Cowles Commons is scheduled to open this spring.
· The Willis Broadway Series
generates an average of $31 million in area economic impact each season.
· This season, more than 55,000
students and teachers will attend the Applause Series. Tickets cost schools only $1 per person, thanks to Donor support.
· Jeff Chelesvig is Iowa’s only Tony Award® voter.
Q
ABOVE: 2002. Triple Espresso – A Highly Caffeinated Comedy opens in the new Temple Theater in the Temple for Performing Arts Building, becoming the longest-running show in Iowa history.
We simply have a fantastic audience and we have great support in the community – both Donor continued
ABOVE LEFT: 2005. Betts Auto Campus (now Willis Auto Campus) becomes title sponsor for the Broadway Series. SHOWN: Jeff Chelesvig and Rich Willis, President of Willis Auto Campus.
Des Moines Performing Arts has grown significantly under your leadership. What keeps you motivated?
53
DES MOINES PERFORMING ARTS Continued from page 53. support and ticket buyers. I think the guiding light in what we do is aspiring to have the best people involved – the artists, staff, production, etc. If we present quality shows and do so in a quality way, people will come.
Q
How has your involvement in the Broadway industry positively impacted Des Moines Performing Arts? You can be involved in a lot of arts organizations in our industry, but early in my tenure, I chose to take on a leadership role with The Broadway League and spend a lot of time in New York City cultivating relationships. That has served us well. I think Des Moines has a huge amount of respect in the Broadway community – sometimes we think of ourselves in too small of terms. The fact that we get these shows early on, year after year, is because we do great work and have great audiences.
1996. The man behind the mask is Jeff Chelesvig, as Des Moines prepares to take its stage as a touring Broadway destination with the 1997 opening of The Phantom of the Opera.
Our programming has also changed considerably. When I first started, we were more a of rental venue, which means promoters would rent space from us and we didn’t have any risk. Today, we are more of a presenting organization, which means we are taking on more risk when we bring in a show.
I think the other component was creating a fund to invest in Broadway shows. This entrepreneurial spirit turned us from being a buyer to having a stake in shows.
Q
How has Des Moines Performing Arts changed from when you first started in 1995?
Q
What would you like to accomplish in the future?
Our guests’ expectations have changed in terms of the level of quality – not only in the service they get, but the shows we present and the operation of our facilities. That’s good because it’s caused us to invest in our people, our operations and our buildings. It’s allowed us to say, “we want to hire quality people” and we’ve doubled our staff since the time I’ve been here.
I want to continue to grow our education and community outreach programs, which means we’re going to need more space. We’re bursting at the seams to do master classes, Q&As, etc. I also want to find ways to increase our use of the Temple Theater – I consider the space a jewel and a great place to see a live concert or show. 54

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.
“
Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.
It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
