FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the new production of The Phantom of the Opera, presented as part of the Willis Broadway Series. Our first engagement of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera in 1997 forever changed the landscape of touring Broadway in Des Moines. At the time, the Civic Center had limited experience in presenting multi-week engagements. Only the first national tour of Annie had been presented for a two-week run in 1981 and again in 1982. We presented the 1997 engagement of Phantom for a record five weeks, and 100,000 people from throughout Iowa and beyond attended. It was a major cultural coup, and the economic impact on Central Iowa was tremendous. That run helped us launch our first Broadway subscription series. It also established the level of quality that is still the foundation of the shows we present in the Willis Broadway Series. Those who have seen previous performances of The Phantom of the Opera will notice several changes in this new touring production. While much of the original creative team is represented once again, this production features a new scenic design by Paul Brown, new staging by Laurence Connor – last represented here in 2013 as co-director of the touring production of Les Misérables – and new choreography by Scott Ambler. The production is overseen by Matthew Bourne (choreographer and director of Sleeping Beauty last fall) and producer Cameron Mackintosh. This production is the second of three musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber that we are presenting this year. We look forward to seeing you in November for the final installment of the trilogy, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. We hope you enjoy this new production of the epic musical The Phantom of the Opera.

FROM THE CHAIR

Dear friends, Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and to the Willis Broadway Series. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our loyal Season Ticket Holders and to our Donors whose generous gifts are the foundation for all we do. We truly appreciate your support. In addition to the Willis Broadway Series, Des Moines Performing Arts presents The Dance Series, the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series, and three offerings within the Prairie Meadows Temple Theater Series – the Temple Comedy Series, Live at the Temple and Lunch Unplugged. The staff and board take great pride in making our four venues performance homes for our entire community, including the Des Moines Symphony. To embrace our roots, we welcome local artists, dance studios, students and more onto our stages each year. Des Moines Performing Arts is also a national leader in theater and arts education. More than 50,000 students attend curriculum-connected performances in our facilities each year. Teachers learn to incorporate the arts into traditional classroom topics. The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program is elevating and showcasing the work of high schools and their students. As a non-profit organization, Des Moines Performing Arts requires your help to make all of this happen. We ask for your support as a Donor and appreciate your help in creating a world-class performing arts center. To learn more about attending any of our performances or about making a donation, please visit DesMoinesPerformingArts.org or call (515) 246-2300. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show!

exhilarating mayhem Phantom opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on October 9. It immediately became one of London’s greatest musical hits.

t’s almost 30 years since my first acquaintance with the Phantom. One cold February morning in 1984 while I was soaking myself in a long hot bath, Andrew Lloyd Webber telephoned me for a gossip and he brought up the idea of making a musical out of The Phantom of the Opera. Even in my prunelike condition, I recognised that Andrew had come up with another great idea.

Eighteen months later our trio of original stars – Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton – opened to rapturous applause on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. The production is still playing there and it reigns as the longestrunning musical in Broadway’s history.

We screened copies of the 1925 Lon Chaney silent movie and the later wartime version with Claude Rains as the Phantom. Though very enjoyable, neither one made us shout “Eureka!” So we found a copy of the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was out of print, and decided that we preferred that original storyline.

Phantom has become the most phenomenal success of all time, breaking box office records worldwide in countless sell-out productions. Since 1986, only the original version has been presented around the world (with the exception of Poland and Hungary, which were non-replica productions) and its brilliant design by Maria Björnson has become synonymous with Andrew’s sensational score. Just before Maria died at a tragically early age she and I had

and co-directed the hugely successful new production of Les Misérables. He also recently staged the triumphant 25th Anniversary production of Phantom at the Royal Albert Hall. As Choreographer, we Andrew agreed that it was both wanted to work with time to give Phantom a fresh Matthew Bourne’s talented look, so in 2008 I approached Cameron Mackintosh protégé, Scott Ambler. To theatre and opera designer light the show we are lucky enough to Paul Brown to see if he was interested have one of the world’s greatest lighting in taking over the baton from Maria. It turned out that Maria had a special place designers, Paule Constable, and to create the sound the incomparable Mick in Paul’s life as at the beginning of his career he had been a young assistant to Potter. Maria still remains at the heart her at the Royal Opera House. The result of the new Phantom with her glorious costumes, some of which are designs of Paul’s long-developed ideas for this project is a new version of Phantom that found in her archive that she created for the original and were never used. uses a more visceraldramatic approach started discussing a different set design, one that would do more to contrast the Phantom’s darker backstage world with that of the traditional opera world onstage.

to create a visual feast, giving audiences the chance to see their favourite musical all over again through new eyes.

This new version of Phantom premiered in the UK in 2012 and was embraced by audiences and critics alike, breaking records throughout its sellout British tour. For the American production we have been able to build on our British success and fine-tune some of the staging, including making the famous chandelier even more spectacular. We all believe that you will fall in love with the music of the night all over again, as the Phantom is reborn for the 21st Century.

Putting together the rest of the new creative team for this Phantom was a daunting but invigorating task. My choice of director was always going to be Laurence Connor who I first met when he became the Associate Director on the London production of Phantom. Since then he has directed acclaimed versions of Miss Saigon and Oliver!, 39

A Local Company. A Plan for the Future. A Dream.

Last year, we moved back home and bought the local nursery. Our banker advised us to find a CPA. We did. Our CPA helped us develop a business plan and get a loan. Then, she helped us set up a payroll system, a retirement plan, and everything in between.

It’s your dream. You think about it all the time. Some might call it an obsession, but it’s your dream and you are going to make it happen. Making your dream a reality won’t happen overnight. But, a CPA is the perfect partner to help put it into action. CPAs listen to your ideas and give solid direction to help you build your future and achieve the things that matter most to you. Call your CPA or locate a member of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants at FindAnIowaCPA.com. Because your dream is worth achieving.
