Dear friends,

Trey McIntyre Project . . . . . . . . . . . . 5

Welcome to the Des Moines Civic Center and the final performance in our fourth season of The Dance Series. We are pleased to present Trey McIntyre Project – a nonprofit arts organization founded to nurture, support and produce the artistic vision of artist Trey McIntyre.

Tonight’s performance is significant because in January Mr. McIntyre announced he will disband Trey McIntyre Project as a full-time dance company next month to focus on other endeavors involving writing, film and photography. We are thrilled to be able to present TMP in its final tour. This performance also marks a first for Des Moines Performing Arts. We are one of several dance presenters involved in commissioning The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction, one of two brilliant pieces you’ll see this evening. Much in the way our organization invests in Broadway shows, this commission provided support for the creation of a new work. The Dance Series is one of our most important performance offerings, and I am thankful to all the DMPA team members for their great work on this series. Director of Programming and Education, Eric Olmscheid, curates this series. Brian Anstedt and his team are integral in coordinating the complex production needs for each company. And, our Education team led by Karoline Myers, is responsible for the pre- and post-show discussions and coordinating the master classes. We are very grateful to those of you who purchased season tickets for The Dance Series and to our Dance VIPs, as it is your support that makes this series possible.

Stay after the performance for

rey McIntyre Project n About ARTISTIC DIRECTOR TREY McINTYRE

One of the most sought-after choreographers and artists working today, Trey McIntyre is the man behind the mission—and the movement—that is Trey McIntyre Project. Using dance and a variety of mediums to explore what it means to be human, McIntyre believes that the process of creating art—from the studio to the stage— is a metaphor for the journey of self-discovery. That exploration and discovery has inspired more than 90 works and high praise for its “singular connection between movement and spirit.” (Los Angeles Times) McIntyre’s inventive combination of the ballet lexicon, his connection to music, and an unflinching examination of the human condition has resulted in exceptional artistry that has garnered him a number of awards and much acclaim. McIntyre was named a United States Artists Wynn Fellow, he received the Gold Medal of Lifetime Achievement from the National Society of Arts and Letters, he received two choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and he was the recipient of a Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography. The Los Angeles Times called McIntyre a “bright light, a brainy ballet choreographer whose best works fuse visceral physicality with a deep and true humanism...” Another LA Times writer said, “There is indeed such a thing as genuine 21st century ballet, and it belongs more to this guy from Wichita than any of the over-hyped pretenders from England, France or Russia. McIntyre rocks, McIntyre rules. Everyone else can just get in line.” The Boston Globe wrote “In a field overflowing with aspiring dance makers, Trey McIntyre continues to stand apart from—and at times far above—the crowd.” The New York Times noted McIntyre as “one of the most singular choreographic minds working in ballet today.” Trey McIntyre has served as choreographic associate for Houston Ballet (1989–2008) and resident choreographer for Oregon Ballet Theatre, Ballet Memphis and The Washington Ballet. He has created a canon of works for some of the premier dance companies in the world, including American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Moscow Ballet Theatre, State Ballet of (Republic of) Georgia, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Ballet de Santiago (Chile), Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Philadanco, Sacramento Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Kansas City Ballet and Smu in Ballet. While he continues to create extraordinary ballets, McIntyre’s far-reaching vision has evolved to an exploration of other genres of art. He is a published writer and photographer, and is currently embarking on two feature-length documentaries. His tireless drive and prolific genius have positioned McIntyre among the most notable American artists of the 21st century.

TREY McINTYRE PROJECT

Trey McIntyre Project is a contemporary ballet company led by the artistic vision of renowned choreographer Trey McIntyre. Since its founding in 2008, TMP has fast become one of the most celebrated dance companies throughout the country and abroad. Trey McIntyre creates highly athletic, innovative works rooted in exploration and discovery, resulting in dance that is at once massively appealing, refreshingly relevant and emotionally evocative. Known for its hallmark musicality and a distinct American voice, TMP uses the art of dance to break cultural boundaries and connect audiences on a basic, yet decidedly profound, human level. TMP’s unique approach expands art beyond the stage and into communities, where it has the power to reach people and touch lives. TMP has been featured in The New York Times, Dance Magazine and on PBS NewsHour, and has earned coast-to-coast acclaim from the likes of Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe and more. Based in Boise, Idaho, TMP has graced the stages of prestigious venues such as Jacob’s Pillow, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, Zellerbach Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall; TMP’s global tours have included China, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. Des Moines Performing Arts Commissions New Work for Final Season of the

TREY MCINTYRE

PROJECT

This June, at the close of its 10th year in business, Trey McIntyre Project will disband its full-time dance company. The move allows artistic director and choreographer Trey McIntyre to pursue other ventures like writing, film and photography. It’s a sad ending for fans of the Boise, Idaho-based dance troupe. But this dark cloud comes with a silver lining in the form of McIntyre’s final choreographed work for Trey McIntyre Project, The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction. The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction, was inspired by the work of illustrator and writer Edward Gorey. Best known for his macabre pen-and-ink drawings, Gorey also had an intense fondness for ballet. A chance meeting with a longtime friend of Gorey’s led McIntyre to explore his work in more depth. “It’s amazing and such a unique sort of macabre take on the children’s Victorian story-telling and literature,” McIntyre said. “It’s important artistically and it’s so great because it is so dark. Gorey really holds our hands through these dark recesses to make it really fun.”

happened to align with Des Moines Performing Arts’ core interest and values, making it the perfect first-time investment. “We had watched the company unfold over the last several years and really saw it flourish and develop such a strong reputation of great work,” said Olmscheid. “When it was announced that the company would disband in June, I honestly couldn’t think of a better legacy to the company than for us to present their last work. We are so proud to be a part of it.” McIntyre said The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for investors like Des Moines Performing Arts. “I think for the dance community, new work is the most important thing,” he said. “It’s a living, breathing art form. And to have support in creating it and collaborators willing to take the risk, is crucial. It’s why we do what we do.” Jody Gifford is a former Des Moines Register theater critic and current media freelancer from West Des Moines.

While The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction might be McIntyre’s swan song, it also marks a milestone for Des Moines Performing Arts. Along with three other commissioners, the organization invested in the creation of the piece itself.

Photos by Trey McIntyre

Eric Olmscheid, Des Moines Performing Arts Director of Programming and Education, said the commission was the result of the organization’s desire to expand its reach beyond the pre-show chats, master classes and postshow Q&As associated with The Dance Series, now in its fourth season. “As we were starting to get more into conversations with the various dance companies, we wondered, much like our Broadway relationships, if there was a way we could be more involved in the creative process,” said Olmscheid. The timing was perfect. Shortly thereafter, it was discovered that Trey McIntyre Project was shopping new work around. The well-respected dance company just DANCE SERIES
