Who are you?
You are community leaders. Teachers. Parents. Clergy. Congregants. Businesspeople. Retirees. Volunteers. You are the charitable organizations quietly doing the hard, and often unseen, work that is vital to a healthy community. You are everyday people working to make an extraordinary difference. You are the founders and sustainers of Community Foundation of Henderson County. Thanks to your volunteerism, and through the CFHC grants, funds and scholarships you support through charitable donations, your actions are the very definition of philanthropy. You house the homeless. You comfort those in pain. You help heal the sick. You see that justice is served. You advocate for the powerless. You strengthen families. You make the dream of higher education come true for striving students. You serve as a beacon of opportunity for the underprivileged. In short, you are building a stronger, kinder, healthier, more vibrant, more loving community. As Community Foundation of Henderson County celebrates its 40th anniversary, we want to thank you for all you’ve done and for setting an example for future generations of givers and doers.
A Message from the Chair It is hard to believe that four decades ago, in 1982, while I was donning a track suit, my dad, Duane McKibbin, was joining Community Foundation of Henderson County’s first-ever Board of Directors. Over the next several decades, he and my mom, Peggy, volunteered countless hours of service on the board, committees, and more. When you see your parents give so selflessly to a higher cause, you can’t help but be humbled...and inspired. In 2015, I was honored to follow in their footsteps by joining the Board of Directors. Since then, I’ve served on different Committees and in a variety of leadership roles. Most recently, I am completing two years of service at the Chair of the Board of Directors. I am filled with gratitude when I reflect on being given the opportunity to see first-hand the positive and far-reaching impact Community Foundation of Henderson County has had on this special community I call home. I know without a doubt that the Foundation’s exponential growth over these forty years is due to the incredibly large hearts of YOU, our philanthropic community members. Community Foundation of Henderson County exists because of YOU. Innumerable people, organizations, and worthy causes have been helped because of YOU. This organization is a vehicle for charitable giving, but YOU are driving and leading the positive change. On behalf of myself and my family who has had the privilege of being here since the beginning, thank you. Your generosity is making a profound impact on the community that we all love. With a grateful heart,
Bill McKibbin Chair, Community Foundation of Henderson County Board of Directors 2020-2022
The story of
To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’d like to share four stories that highlight the enduring partnerships between Community Foundation of Henderson County, our community, and you, our supporters.
Carl Sandburg Partnerships Ninety-five years ago, Charles Lindbergh successfully completed the first transatlantic flight. Henry Ford announced his factories would transition from producing the Model T to the Model A. And in the small community of Flat Rock, a lasting legacy was established upon the passing of a gentleman who, in his short life, had developed a profound reverence for the mountains of North Carolina. Roger Richardson Hill went to his eternal reward soon after establishing a trust that protected five acres of land that he had selected for his final resting place atop Glassy Mountain. Although originally from Michigan, Hill came to North Carolina in search of a cure for the tuberculosis that ultimately took his life. Although he did not find a cure, the plaque at his gravesite attests to what he did find: “Here he rests far from his native land, seeking health he found peace and quietness.” What Roger Richardson Hill did not know, and could not have known, was that the trust he created for the upkeep of his burial site would end up protecting a future landmark cherished by many: Connemara, the home of Carl Sandburg from 1945 to 1967 and now a National Historic Site. The two properties adjoin one another, and though Sandberg and Hill never met, their shared appreciation for this land would most certainly have made them kindred spirits had they been neighbors. Through the trust, the Hill property was eventually passed to Community Foundation of Henderson County in 2013. In addition
to providing a buffer to Connemara, the location of the acreage made it possible to create an easier way for hikers to reach the summit of Big Glassy. Income from the trust is also distributed by the Community Foundation to the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site to help provide maintenance. Thanks to thoughtful philanthropists like Roger Richardson Hill, incredible places of natural beauty are available to generation after generation. And while Mr. Hill didn’t realize his trust would have such a profound impact, he most certainly would have approved of the spirit and values reflected in Community Foundation of Henderson County, Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, and Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara. The partnership forged by these groups over the past decade has helped pave the way for future generations to experience the same “peace and quietness” so beloved by Carl Sandburg and Roger Richardson Hill.
