DSWF’s Community Fundraising magazine

Welcome to the latest DSWF community magazine! In 2015, so many have got involved with our herd to raise much needed funds for wild animals across Africa. Here’s why and how! Summer 2015 Welcome to Wildlife Warriors, our new online bi-annual Community Fundraising magazine. Community fundraising is all about rallying communities to support your cause and, since the DSWF Community Fundraising initiative started last year, we’ve been amazed by how many people of all ages have thrown themselves (in some cases, literally) so whole-heartedly into such a wide variety of fundraising events. Fundraising is one of the most fulfilling things you can do. As well as being personally rewarding, it’s enormous fun and the results speak for themselves. With the help of our Community Fundraising supporters, we’ve been able to refurbish key strategic ranger stations and bring poachers to justice in Uganda, as well as support undercover operations to fight the ivory trade in Zambia. A very tangible result for everyone’s efforts. We’re now looking for more Regional Volunteer Fundraising Ambassadors to join Amanda, Anita and Rebecca (read about them on page 5) to help our cause. It’s an opportunity for you to take charge of your own local community in support of DSWF, spread the word and engage people to fundraise on our behalf. If you are passionate about wildlife, value the environment and would like to get involved, please do get in touch with me. Or maybe you’d prefer a physical challenge, in which case take a look at our website at http://bit.ly/WildlifeChallenge. Better together is a well worn phrase, but this really is a case of together we can make a real difference. Marianne Watts - Community Fundraiser Less than 100 years ago there were an estimated 10 million elephants roaming our planet. Today, approximately 500,000 remain. In 2015, one elephant is killed every 15 minutes for its ivory, fuelling an illegal trade that threatens to wipe out this iconic species. We’re working with you, the local community, to help us raise vital funds for our elephant conservation projects - before it’s too late. The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) supports innovative and far-reaching conservation projects throughout Africa and Asia that yield tangible results for endangered wildlife and its habitat. Synonymous with elephants, at 84, David Shepherd (above) continues to campaign to save them and supports a complete ban on the ivory trade

Nadia takes on a Jumbo Challenge! After many visits to Colchester Zoo, Nadia Gibbs of Clacton-on-Sea fell in love with elephants and decided to learn more about them and their situation in the wild.

‘‘

‘‘ ,

What I discovered about the situation facing elephants in the wild truly shocked me. Without action being taken to end the illegal trade in ivory and to stop the poaching, there may be no elephants left in the wild in ten years.

As a result, Nadia has set herself a challenge to raise £1,000 for the DSWF Elephant Orphanage project. Her aim is to complete at least 30 physical events in 2015. “This is not going to come easy to me, I’m fairly unfit but feel I must push myself in order to expect people to sponsor me”.

Target £1,000

Baking for wildlife Having been inspired by a DSWF Education Team talk at school, South Farnham School pupils Charlie Jourdain, Thea Jones and Lara Lloyd-Mostyn decided to do a cake sale to raise money for wildlife. So the trio, along with Charlie’s mum, Natasha and others, brightened up a drizzly day selling lots of delicious and interestingly decorated cakes at the Bourne Green during a Footie Presentation day. Thank you so much. You’re all an inspiration to the DSWF team!

Introducing our new Regio

By supporting the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, you can make a real difference to wildlif satisfaction in achieving a personal goal, while raising funds at the same time. Our new Regiona in fundraising, wildlife and meeting like-minded people to raise funds for DSWF.

Amanda and Barry Butler, long term supporters of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, rose to the DSWF30 challenge last year, driving through 30 counties in 30 hours. Their fundraising efforts achieved over £2,500 and now Amanda has agreed to be one of our first Regional Volunteer Fundraising Ambassadors. Here’s her story … “Until recently I would have described myself as having had a love of Africa, now I would have to say it has become a passion. The role of the Regional Volunteer Fundraising Ambassador will now allow me to spread my passion further. I hope to enthuse others into wild fundraising ideas, introduce a wide variety of people to the work of DSWF and to excite interest in the minds of young people, who will be the future supporters of DSWF. “I love returning to Africa but I don’t want to find empty spaces where animals once roamed. Now is the time to act.” If you’d like to get involved with activities in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, contact Amanda on ambassadorfordswf@yahoo.co.uk

“Wildlife’s ability to survive the challenges of the twentyfirst century is rapidly becoming outpaced by events that are transforming our world, such as habitat degradation, pollution and the illegal wildlife trade,” says Rebecca. “The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation is making a fundamental difference in securing a future for endangered animals in Africa and Asia through antipoaching and conservation projects. “Inspired by the Charity’s work and my lifelong interest in wildlife, I have taken on the role of Regional Volunteer Fundraising Ambassador and my aim is to engage with new audiences through entertaining and participatory events for all ages, as well as competitions for children.” If you’d like to get involved with activities in Oxfordshire, contact Rebecca on dswfa.oxford@gmail.com

“I have always been an animal lover but, as a long term volunteer in animal conservation education, I have an inner drive to tell people about the worldwide damage being done to our beautiful planet and the amazing creatures in it,” says Anita. “Animals worldwide are vanishing at an alarming rate with some animals at the point of extinction due to mindless poaching, cruelty all for the self-gratification of humankind.” “It is my firm belief that if you sow a ‘seed’ of information with people, making them aware of what is happening, they will hopefully begin to look at their ideas and put changes in their lives to help. It was with this background that I have been very happy to continually sponsor Chamilandu, at the DSWFsupported Elephant Orphanage Project. Through sponsoring her and reading of her journey back to the wild, I decided I must do a lot more to make the public aware of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s work for all animals.” Anita Murray North Norfolk

St. Catherine’s raises fund In June 2015 DSWF Community Fundraiser, Marianne Watts, met Fran Flammiger and Jean Arrick to see if St. Catherine’s School might support DSWF’s 30th Anniversary Community Fundraising Initiative, which had pledged to raise £30,000 in 300 days in support of our elephant projects in Africa. Both the Senior and Prep Schools very readily got involved culminating in a wonderful fundraising evening at St. Catherine’s entitled ‘From wildlife artist to conservationist’. This included an exhibition at the School of some of David Shepherd’s rarely seen work from his private collection, together with original work by his daughter, Mandy, and his grand-daughter, Emily Lamb. These pieces were hung alongside artwork produced by the whole School. The evening included a very entertaining talk about David’s life as an artist and conservationist given by Mandy Shepherd. The final sum raised was almost £5,000. Members of the Lower 6th plan to visit the Elephant Orphanage Project in Zambia in August during their summer expedition. We very much hope this is the start of a close partnership between the School and DSWF.

Despite being on call since the early hours, including dealing with a large house fire in East Horsley, the crew was on hand to wash the cars of any charitable drivers. Almost 200 vehicles were cleaned raising £900 for DSWF and Commando 999, the official Royal Marines ex-servicemen charity. The firefighters were also joined by Royal Marine cadets from Guildford and Woking, four Surrey Fire volunteers and off-duty crew members.

How your fundraising is helping to save elephants

Park protection & Elephant orphanage, Zambia In Zambia successful anti-poaching operations funded by you and run in cooperation with the Zambian Wildlife Authority have led to the arrest of INTERPOL wanted environmental crime fugitive and illegal ivory trader Ben Simasiku. This is a hugely positive step in our ongoing fight against wildlife crime and ivory trafficking. This year has also been one of mixed fortunes for the victims of the ivory wars. While two of the young elephants, Kavala and Maramba (image below), made the next step in the journey back to the wild by relocating from the elephant nursery at Lilayi to the release site in Kafue National Park, four new baby eles were also brought in. Of them, only one survived the trauma of being orphaned and is now receiving the round-theclock care thanks to your support.

The Waterways Project, Uganda Two of the ranger stations we have funded are now refurbished and fit for purpose. Sited in key strategic locations the old mud huts have been replaced with permanent stations that are providing the rangers with great facilities and the ability to react immediately to poaching incidents in this vulnerable part of Uganda. The new facilities have boosted morale and the number of snares has been now dramatically reduced signalling a safer future for Uganda’s precious wildlife populations including elephants. None of this could be achieved without your support.

Looking ahead

The continuing scourge of the illegal trade in wildlife, and more particularly the slaughter of Africa's elephants for their ivory, is having a dramatic impact on populations. There are now more elephants being killed than being born but with your continuing support we will fight to protect them by providing anti-poaching, park protection, welfare, education and community outreach alongside our commitment to carrying out undercover investigations into the poachers and traffickers that are driving the illegal trade.
