“For over forty years my art has been a valuable way of raising awareness and funds for the wildlife that I love and I am thrilled that so many of the artists exhibited here share that same passion and sense of responsibility for what inspires us.”

Welcome to the 2017 Wildlife Artist of the Year exhibition at the Mall Galleries. This is the tenth year that my foundation - the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has run this prestigious event. It attracts artists from all over the world and showcases some of the finest and most exciting wildlife art while at the same time raising vital awareness and funds for the endangered wildlife that DSWF works so hard to protect. I am delighted to welcome The Bigger Picture to the Mall Galleries this year and hope that you will be as impressed as I am with their fresh approach to the portrayal of life at the frontline of conservation through art, photography and film. Every painting, sculpture, postcard, catalogue and print sold here this week, and every donation made, will help

fund vital conservation projects across Africa and Asia which work to protect some of the planet’s most iconic and threatened species. Thank you to all our generous supporters and volunteers who help make this week of wildlife art possible. To Mr and Mrs Covey for sponsoring the competition’s top prize, all our sponsors who support the event, prizes and printing and to all the artists and buyers - without you none of this would be possible.

David Shepherd CBE, FRSA Founder & President The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation www.davidshepherd.org

About DSWF Founded in 1984 by wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd CBE, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) works to protect some of the world’s most iconic and endangered animals. Born from the desire to give something back to the animals that helped David become an established artist, art remains key to funding critical anti-poaching, conservation and education work across Africa and Asia. We FIGHT for change on the world stage, calling for an end to the trade in ivory and tiger parts; we pursue our passion to PROTECT by funding anti-poaching, conservation and park protection work and we ENGAGE communities, companies and individuals to support our work and to help create the change in attitudes and ethos that will ultimately protect the world we love.

Our current funding protects: Elephants in Zambia and Uganda Lions in Uganda Painted Dogs in Zimbabwe Pangolins in Zambia and Uganda Rhino in Namibia and India Snow Leopards in Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan Tigers in Thailand, India and Russia We fund undercover investigations into wildlife crime and trafficking in India, South Africa and across Asia.

DSWF would like to thank everyone who has helped make this exhibition possible including all the staff, judges, artists, celebrities and sponsors:

Mr & Mrs Covey Tilney, Barlow Robbins, Joan Morley and Gary Hodges, The Artist Magazine, JANUS

How you can support our work CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS FIGHT

You could be part of the solution not the problem

As a multi-billion pound industry, wildlife crime and the trafficking of wildlife products is a global issue affecting the social, economic and political fabric of national states, crossborder and international communities. With your support DSWF can continue to fund vital, international, cross-border intelligence lead investigations that aim to tackle the current problem and support law enforcement efforts. Specialist intelligence conferences involving source, transit and consumer countries mean kingpins are identified and targeted and evidence compiled to bring them to justice. Stop wildlife parts and products becoming the next conflict resource by adding your voice to the fight. By taking an active interest in the impact wildlife crime has on global instability you can help curb one of the fastest growing and environmentally damaging illegal trafficking industries.

PROTECT

A heritage of protection steeped in success

ENGAGE

Your support can inspire future generations

DSWF funds life-changing environmental and conservation projects reaching over 20,000 children every year through established, interactive education programmes. With your support, we can inspire tomorrow’s leaders and conservationists to create a brighter future. What if we were able to change the mind set of millions? What if we were able to engage and inspire an entire generation? What if millions, no billions, of young people were to say “enough is enough - we are the generation that cares?” Through social media we can connect the world in a way unprecedented in our history. In 2011, DSWF launched TigerTime - a digital campaign to raise awareness and funds for the protection of wild tigers. We asked people to lend their voice to speak up for tigers and huge numbers of people and celebrities were pleased to help us spread the word. Today we have the potential to reach 19 million with one tweet. We have over 750,000 followers on Facebook. Our message can spread around the world in seconds. But what if those 19 million people could become 180 million - just think what we could achieve.

Through tireless dedication, DSWF has influenced policy, shifted attitudes and provided an unwavering voice for conservation over 30 years.

Help us connect for conservation across an entire generation by engaging your networks with our work and being part of a global community for change.

We have built an unblemished reputation based on transparency, credibility and an intimate knowledge of the countries and programmes that receive DSWF funding.

A partnership for growth

More than ever before, we face daily news of the devastation that humans inflict on wildlife and our planet; news of vanishing species and wild spaces which it is within our power to preserve. Act today to secure all our futures. Help us by investing in communities and programmes that have real impact, on real people, in real places and the wildlife they live alongside.

Join a growing number of companies and show your commitment to social responsibility and the fight against wildlife crime. Make a commitment to fund our vital work or sponsor one of our events. Call CEO Oliver Smith on 01483 272323 today to discuss the opportunities for corporate partnerships that give you, your employees and your stakeholders the opportunity to be part of dynamic team working to protect some of the world’s most endangered wildlife and the habitats we all share.

to save endangered wildlife INDIVIDUAL SUPPORTERS We rely on your support to protect endangered wildlife Conservation successes are hard won and vitally important to the survival of endangered wildlife and we are hugely proud of what our donors have helped us achieve. Among our shared successes are: • Playing a pivotal role at CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) 2016, to bring about decisions to end any future process for the trade in ivory. • Establishing the first Pangolin Protection Programmes in Zambia and Uganda. • Co-funding the first Aerial Support Unit for the Kafue National Park in Zambia. • Establishing Zambia’s first Elephant Orphanage to rescue, rehabilitate and release the innocent victims of ivory poaching. • Helping to secure Uganda’s Murchison Falls Conservation Area from poaching so that elephant populations can recover from near extinction. Populations now exceed over 1,000 elephants. • Helping to educate over 10,000 children in Zimbabwe to provide a fuller understanding of the importance of conserving wildlife and its habitat. • Providing over 20 years of vital funding and support to ensure the survival of black rhino populations in Namibia. • Saving the Amur Tiger from certain extinction in the 1990s cracking down on uncontrolled poaching and raising awareness among the international community. • Engaging with the Kyrgyzstan Government and a local NGO to re-wild a former hunting concession allowing for the safe development of the 4th most significant snow leopard habitat in the world as a protected natural area.

None of this would be possible without your help. If you would like to be part of our successes and help us continue our fight for wildlife, please donate today. Every penny goes a long way in conservation and we work hard to ensure that your money goes to protect the animals that need it most. DONATE AT THE MALL GALLERIES TODAY: Simply speak to a DSWF member of staff and they will guide you through the process. Using art, photography and film to raise funding and awareness for anti-poaching

“The Bigger Picture project was designed with one specific aim: to raise funding and awareness for the men and women on the front line of conservation” In 2016, Freddy Paske had recently left the British Army to pursue his passion as a wildlife artist. It was during this busy year that he met Dave Mackay; another army veteran who had recently completed a first class degree in photography. Yearning for adventure again they decided to join their new found professions with 29 years of combined military experience and set their sights on the world of conservation and a very different type of war zone. “The Bigger Picture project was designed with one specific aim: to raise funding and awareness for the men and women on the front line of conservation,” explains Dave. To do this, Freddy and Dave teamed up with professional charity fundraiser Liz Parker, who secured full sponsorship for the project and helped complete the team with award winning documentary film maker Dieter Deswarte. With support from DSWF, they headed to Zambia to work alongside antipoaching teams and to document their experience through art, photography and film. The journey began this February at the Elephant Orphanage Project in Lusaka. “It was a potent introduction to the effects of poaching,” says Freddy. “The orphans are the surviving victims of a vicious trade which has claimed their mothers. With meticulous care, the keepers watch over the juveniles 24/7 with one thing in mind; to release them back into the wild.” “They take this ethos very seriously and as a result physical human contact is

reduced to a minimum,” adds Dave. “As we photographed and filmed the keepers going about their tireless daily routine, it was clear to see how difficult it is to maintain this stand-off attitude. We all soon realised that the distance is there to help keeper as well as elephant part company at the age of three years – the time the orphans are moved from the nursery up to the release facility in Kafue National Park.”

military equipment it was admirable to see the rangers operating in these conditions in just a pair of gum boots.

After a few days with the nursery orphans the team travelled out to the centre of Kafue National Park, home to the Special Anti-Poaching Unit (SAPU). This elite team was to be their guide for the rest of the month.

“Rainy season lasts for four months and this journey needs to be done at least every month,” explains Freddy. “Having seen firsthand what is required of a Kafue ranger, The Bigger Picture team now understands how vital it is to raise awareness of their work and funding to support supplies and equipment.”

Charged with being at the tip of the antipoaching spear, they work with carefully sourced intelligence to conduct specific strikes and arrests. “Needless to say their workload is exponential,” says Dave. “At 22,500km2, Kafue is one of the largest national parks in Africa and therefore one of the hardest to patrol. It takes them four days in unreliable vehicles to reach the edge of the park, rain permitting. More importantly, it takes them just as long to return which can mean life or death for an injured ranger. With these factors at play it is not surprising that poachers conduct most of their operations in the hard to access areas.” Throughout the following weeks the team joined the SAPU patrols; photographing, sketching and filming their way around Kafue National Park. Keeping equipment dry was a constant problem and for a team accustomed to the relative comforts of good

A poignant reminder of the difficulties of operating in the area hit home when the team’s convoy was bogged down during a resupply. After 24 hours of digging they finally released their vehicles and could deliver the rations.

The body of work that the team collected will create a powerful exhibition - the first of its kind - by providing a unique visual exploration into life on a very different front line.
