Dear children, parents, grandparents, teachers and supporters Welcome to the 2016 Global Canvas Event Magazine which comes hot on the heels of the fabulous event at the Natural History Museum in London on March 17. Thank you to everyone who made the journey and helped make it such a memorable and inspiring event! Special thanks as always to David Shepherd for inspiring us all and to Jonny Lambert for helping to judge and present the prizes. For those who couldn’t be with us we hope that this magazine gives you a flavour of the wonderful celebration of art and poetry that we enjoyed thanks to all your hard work! Next year’s competition will follow the same theme of collaborative working and we’re inviting YOU to suggest titles for next year’s competition - so please send your ideas to me at jo.elphick@ davidshepherd.org Thank you again for taking part you were all brilliant!

Overall Winners:

St. Thomas of Canterbury

The judges were blown away by the outstanding creativity, collaboration and presentation that St Thomas submitted this year. The professionalism and passion of the children simply shone through! We were only sorry that the rhino and snow leopard were unable to come to the event!

Congratulations!


Joint 2nd Place Winners: Spratton Hall School, Northants Colour, collaboration and a passionate interpretation of the theme made this inspiring entry a firm favourite with the judges. The ceramic heads were much admired and the giraffe scooped the David Shepherd personal choice award too. “I don’t know why,” he said, “but I simply love it!”

Joint 2nd Place Winners: South Farnham School, Surrey What the judges loved about this entry was the all-embracing nature of the work on show. The children explored a variety of exciting media from aboriginal design to batik, learning new skills as they went. The characterful flamingos and the back lit batik were a particular favourites!

Well done!


Joint 3rd Place Winners: Perrott Hill, Crewkerne , Somerset We all love tigers and this thought-provoking entry was a wonderful tribute to this amazing big cat! We loved the detail, the art and the wonderful words that accompanied this entry - a real heart-felt plea for the survival of the wild tiger!


Joint 3rd Place Winners: Aldro School, Godalming , Surrey A truly passionate exploration of the elephant this entry was accompanied by a mighty baobab tree with its leaves full of wishes for the future survival of the elephant. The poetry combined with the artwork created a stunning entry.

Well done!


Jonny Lambert’s Personal Choice Award: Hangleton Primary School, Hove Author and illustrator Jonny Lambert loved this entry saying that it took him back to his school days. “I just loved the idea of creating a blanket of art and poetry to protect the world,” he said.

Inspiring! Thank you to author and illustrator, Jonny Lambert for joining us at the Natural History Museum and for sharing his story of what inspires his art and how we can all improve our own. Remember - just make your mark!


Michael O’Mara Book’s Personal Choice: Ripley Court, Surrey With her love of art and creativity Lesley O’Mara of event sponsors Michael O’Mara Books loved the colour and quality of the Ripley Court entry. Some of the individual pieces were stunning but the whole was outstanding!

Brilliant! Our HUGE thank you to Michael O’Mara Books for co-sponsoring the event. £1,000 of the sponsorship was a prize for the winners to spend on the DSWF education project of their choice. Michael O’Mara Books


David Shepherd’s Personal Choice: Spratton Hall School, Northants An animal lover through and through David chose this wonderful ceramic giraffe head from the Spratton Hall entry as his personal favourite. Like all great art you sometimes can’t quite put your finger on why you love it so much “it simply shone out,” he said.

Teachers and pupils from Walsall Wood travelled from the West Midlands to set up their great display which looked at wild wonders of our world from the forests to the ice caps
