Cooktown and Cape York Visitor Guide

Cooktown is Australia’s closest town to the Great Barrier Reef and with its laid-back atmosphere and friendly people, it is the perfect base to explore the beauty of the Lower Cape. Cooktown is noted for its pristine environment and Aboriginal culture and is most known for its well documented history, including the first recorded act of reconciliation between Lt James Cook and the local Indigenous peoples of the region back in 1770. This is an area of diverse landscapes, flora and fauna, wonderful bush and beach walks and

scenic drives. You’ll find rainforest, outback, hilltop savannah, fresh and tidal wetlands, grasslands, heathlands, untouched beaches and hidden waterfalls. Allow plenty of time to explore! Relax and let Cooktown’s ambience, splendid isolation and historic stories provide a unique holiday experience. For more information and suggested itineraries contact the Cooktown Visitor Information Centre on Walker Street on 07 4069 6004.

NATIONAL PARKS

Mount Cook, rising to 431m, acts as a stunning rainforest clad backdrop to Cooktown. A 6km return walking track climbs steeply for 800m to the Waymburr lookout and then mounts the long spur to the summit. Once you reach the top, gaze at fantastic views over Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and Northern Wet Tropics world heritage areas. This track requires a good level of fitness. Keatings Lagoon Conservation Park is a bird watcher’s paradise. Wander along the pleasant Wawu Balgal Bubu Walk, and from a snug bird hide watch waterbirds feeding in Keatings Lagoon, especially from May to October. Remember your binoculars and insect repellent.

Feel awed by the mysterious looming boulders of Black Mountain and the Aboriginal legends surrounding these lichen blackened slopes. There is no access to the mountain, so enjoy the great boulder views from the viewing area, just off the Mulligan Highway, 25kms South of Cooktown.

ABORIGINAL HISTORY Cooktown lies in Guugu Yimithirr country, a tribal nation which stretches from the Annan River (Yuku Baja), just south of Cooktown, to Princess Charlotte Bay in the north. This is one of Cape York’s 41 tribal nations, each having its own distinct language, history, culture, bush foods and bush medicines. We are surrounded by opportunity to engage in or visit some of Queensland’s most distinctive rock art and Aboriginal culture.

Cooktown and Cape York Visitor Guide

HISTORY OF MODERN AUSTRALIA Cooktown is where Lt James Cook found safe haven in 1770 to repair his ship, the HM Bark Endeavour, and where the First Reconciliation took place between Europeans and the Guugu Yimithirr people. A century later, Cook’s Town was built on the banks of the river where that historic meeting took place. A bustling new port and community grew from a ramshackle tent city to service the mining camps of Queensland’s largest gold rush on the Palmer River. The gold soon disappeared, but Cooktown hung on, surviving economic decline and two devastating cyclones. Today Cooktown has a population of 2,300 and the town is growing again as word spreads of its beautiful location and the friendliness of its people. With the completion of the Mulligan Highway in 2006, the town is now easily accessible by a fully sealed road and air, yet its remote location, stunning landscapes and laid-back lifestyle give it a distinctly frontier feel - the very essence of Australia!

JAMES COOK STATUE

Bicentennial Park features the statue and is the site of the annual re-enactment of Cook’s landing.

COOKTOWN HISTORY CENTRE

Showcasing life through the ages of Cooktown and awardwinning displays, the Cooktown History Centre houses an extensive archive providing visitors valuable insight into the greater Cooktown and Palmer River areas. Hope Vale & Elim Beach Set in a picturesque valley, Hope Vale Aboriginal Community is surrounded by tropical native bushland, mountain ranges, pristine coast and diverse flora and fauna and is the gateway to one of the most spectacular sand dune environments on Cape York, the coloured sands. Hidden in the hills surrounding the township are the Nugal rock art sites, set in a beautiful, ancient country with giant rocks and stunning views.

ELIM BEACH This stunning beach is home to the famous Coloured Sands, and is a popular spot to go fishing and camping. The Elim Beach campground is right on the water’s edge with fabulous views to Cape Bedford, providing the perfect base from which to explore the area. The mesmerising dune formations of the Coloured Sands are a 300 metre walk along the beach. Driving on the beach should only be undertaken at low tide, in a 4WD vehicle with extreme caution. The drive from Hope Vale to Elim Beach takes about 45mins on a partly sealed road which winds through white silica sand hills, rugged escarpments and heathlands. An excellent place for bird watching. www.cooktownandcapeyork.com

Lakeland & Laura Lakeland is an agricultural region south west of Cooktown on the inland route. Lakeland was first occupied by Western Yalanji people and European settlement began in 1873 with the Palmer River Gold Rush and the establishment of a large cattle property known as Butchers Hill to supply meat to the goldfields. Lakeland has become a food bowl producing some of Australia’s best bananas and watermelons. For many travellers, Lakeland is considered the gateway to Cape York.

MUST DO’S FRESH PRODUCE Support the local farmers and buy fresh produce from the road side stalls. INDIGENOUS ROCK ART Join a tour with a local Indigenous guide to fully immerse yourself in this rich and ancient culture.

MAYTOWN AND THE OLD COACH ROAD A great 4WD adventure. 30,000 people descended on the Palmer River and Maytown during the Gold Rush and remnants of their time here can still be found. The Old Coach Road from Maytown to Laura is for skilled 4WD enthusiasts and is an extreme 4WD track.

Laura was once the end point for the Cooktown-Laura railway and was an important supply centre during the gold rush. Amazing sandstone escarpments have created caves and overhangs where some spectacular Aboriginal rock art galleries exist. These Quinkan rock art galleries are listed on the National Heritage List and UNESCO has listed them as being amongst the top ten rock art sites in the world. The exact age of the paintings is yet to be determined but it is believed they are aged between 10,000 and 40,000 years old. Jarramali Rock Art Tours offer guided tours and accommodation options to view Magnificent Gallery. Split Rock Gallery can be accessed by self drive, just off the Peninsula Development Road south of Laura. The short 500m walk takes you to the site. Donations are appreciated and can be left in the donations box at the car park.

Cape York Peninsula & The Northern Great Barrier Reef This is a beautiful place, and a loved home. This is the traditional country of an ancient culture. This is a place to enjoy, and a place to respect. The Cape York Local Marine Advisory Committee and South Cape York Catchments produced this guide to help you visit our home with minimal impact. For more tips, visit:

Do you love barramundi, mud crabs, or mangrove jack? Salt pans, mangroves, and coastal wetlands are beautiful habitats that provide these species with important breeding and feeding grounds. Please help us look after them by keeping vehicles out.

The fishing is great up here! Help our fish stocks by only taking what you'll eat, and by brushing up on zoning, catch, and closure regulations. Download the 'Eye on the Reef' and 'QLD Fishing' apps in the App Store or Google Play for all the info you need.

While Cape York is some of the last wilderness left in Australia, it is not no-man's land! Please respect our land managers - do not trespass, avoid spreading weed seeds on vehicles, and never light bush fires.

Cooktown and Cape York Visitor Guide

The mining town of Weipa is a great place to replenish supplies before exploring the Western Cape and beyond. Spend a few days relaxing and enjoying the magnificent sunsets over the waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

So many things to do - bird watch at Lake Patricia, take a sunset walk along one of the town’s beaches, immerse yourself in the cultural heritage, wet a line at one of the Cape’s best fishing spots on a boat charter, or relax at one of the many recreation clubs on offer.

The Weipa region boasts some of the most pristine eco systems on the entire Cape. Banning commercial fishing from this area for many years has ensured the diversity of this very special place and makes it a sport and recreational fisherman’s paradise. Many of Australia’s tropical sportfish call these pristine waters home. Image courtesy Ali Ward

Getting Here Travelling to Cooktown and within Cape York Peninsula SELF-DRIVE

This would be one of Australia’s most interesting drives which is being slowly tamed, after years of being wild.

The majority of the road between Mossman and Cooktown is fully sealed and most rivers bridged, especially the newly sealed section from Wujal Wujal to Helenvale.

The picturesque coastal route from Cape Tribulation to Wujal Wujal is an unsealed 4WD track (Bloomfield Track) with the remaining road through Ayton, Rossville, Helenvale, Black Mountain and on to Cooktown now sealed. The Peninsula Development Road from Lakeland to Laura is sealed, with small sections further north to Weipa slowly being sealed. The Bamaga Road to the Tip is unsealed and conditions can change rapidly. Please drive according to the current conditions.

There are two main routes north to get to Cooktown. The Mulligan Highway travels inland through Mt Molloy, Mt Carbine, Lakeland and Black Mountain on to Cooktown. This route is open all year round, day and night and is the typical outback scenery with open roads as far as the eye can see.

CAR HIRE

Check road conditions before you travel, as some rivers flood during the monsoon period from December to April.

Trans North offers Cairns to Cooktown daily. Cairns Cooktown Express also offers Cairns to Cooktown daily. There are several bus tour operators for organised groups that depart from Cairns to Cape York.

Take caution when driving at night due to wildlife and wandering stock.

Car hire is available in Cooktown, Coen, Lockhart River, Weipa, Seisia and Bamaga.

BUS

HANDY HINT The Bloomfield Track Route is best driven North to South as the coastal views in this direction are superb

AIR

Hinterland Aviation offers their flights from Cairns to Cooktown, Coen, Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw. Daintree Air Services offers charter flight services from both Cairns and their new Cooktown base.

SEA

Seaswift operates Australia’s last working cargo vessel to carry passengers. MV Trinty Bay travels from Cairns to Torres Strait and back. Travel by private boat or aboard a cruise ship that docks at Cooktown or Thursday Island is also available. LOCAL TIP

Check roads before travelling as the road conditions can change suddenly depending on the weather and the surface of the road (sealed or unsealed). www.cooktownandcapeyork.com

Rules & Permits IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• You’ll encounter several categories of land when you’re travelling on the Cape. Understanding these will help you know if you can enter that land, what permits or permission you’ll need, and what activities are allowed there. • National parks are protected areas managed by the Queensland Department of Environment and Science. https://www.des.qld.gov.au/

• Some national parks are designated CYPAL (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land). These are protected areas, jointly managed with Traditional Owners. https://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/managing/joint_management _of_cape_york_peninsula_national_parks.html

• There’s also privately owned land, and Aboriginal land privately owned by land trusts and other entities. And you may find areas designated as conservation parks, nature refuges or resource reserves.

GET PERMISSION

• Remember – all land belongs to someone, even deep in the bush. Get prior permission to enter and camp. Check with local shire councils, visitor centres or roadhouses to find out who to contact for permission. • You must pre-book camping in all national parks and most Aboriginal communities well in advance of your visit.
