Guggenheim NYC: Helical Halls This project explores architectural concepts from the original Guggenheim and re-imagines them in a new form. These major design features include a unique relationship with the urban fabric, formal links to Nature and a Prescribed Circulation.
Guggenheim 2
Most of the buildings lining 5th Avenue are beige ornamented boxes, gladly succumbing to the rule of the all-powerful New York City Block and relinquishing their agency to the excitement of Central Park. Until, that is, one reaches the Guggenheim. The Guggenheim’s spiral shape is iconic and captivating. The organic helical facade effectively snaps one from the repetition of traditional buildings and temporarily draws one’s attention from the beauty of the park to the beauty of its architecture. Certainly, the organic form of the building implies that it is apart of the park and nature itself. This defiance of the city’s natural order in favor of Nature is even more striking in plan where the round gallery stands out strikingly within the rectangular city fabric. Helical Halls seeks to defy the urban fabric and unite with nature as well, but takes a different approach. The building levitates itself off the ground in an act of defiance against the surrounding traditional urban context. A shallow flowing reflection pool springs up underneath, alluding to Central Park and conceptually pulling the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir across the street.

These major design features inc Fibergla unique relationship with the urban fabric, formal links to Nature and spiralin Prescribed Circulation. the opt
The most celebrated feature of the original Guggenheim is of course the continuous spiraling gallery. As opposed to a meandering explorative experience offered by most art galleries, Frank Lloyd Wright’s gallery has a prescriptive forced experience. The ramp gives visitors a sense that there is a meaning and progression to the arrangement of the art; a “curated” experience. Helical Halls seeks to combine the idea of a sequential gallery experience with the spatial curatorial freedoms of a more traditional open space gallery. It is conceived of as sequence of galleries descending downwards in a spiral. As they spiral, the galleries collide with one another, setting up a number of intriguing spatial conditions and vantage points from which to view the exhibition.

Guests descend from an open public plaza into a subterranean lobby and are ushered to the top of the building in extra-large elevators. They then descend sequentially from one gallery to the next. This spiraling (helical) sequence, is reflected in the expressive pattern on the exterior facade where Fiberglass Reinforced Concrete Panels alternate size and pattern to emphasize the spiraling circulation. The spiraling cube shaped galleries give artists and curators the option of creating a cohesive experience throughout the museum or dividing it thematically into separate exhibition halls. Just as in the present Guggenheim, guests are as equally excited by the circulation as they are the exhibition, as they transverse suspended catwalks and peer through a maze art and architecture. Glass staircases lead visitors down though each gallery, reorienting them with peaks of Central Park and reinforcing the building’s ever important link to nature.

The section of Park Avenue stretching between Grand Central Station and 57th street is surrounded by New York’s most iconic public landmarks, and adjacent to some of its most heavily trafficked urban sequences. Yet, the area is one of the least inspiring parts of Manhattan. In an effort to reinvigorate an underutilized, underwhelming, district in New York City, “Warping the Centerline” takes the traditional Park Avenue median and lifts/ bends/warps it to create new public spaces along Park Avenue including event platforms, performance seating and elevated walkways that double as market places. Its form engages the surrounding community by providing spaces for those programs that are most lacking in this region of the city, while enhancing existing popular pedestrian corridors and encouraging future ones.

Landmarks
This project seeks to provide programs that are lacking near the site in the hopes of making Midtown East a more exciting destination and attracting more retail.
Currently, the site is unlikely to attract pedestrian traffic because there is a lack of Instagram-worthy landmarks or experientially exciting public spaces near the site. The project is cited in the middle of this stretch.

DIVIDED WATERS CHICAGO, IL
Pilsen and Bridgeport are two communities with very different identities located on opposite sides of the Chicago River. Pilsen is a predominantly Latino Community with a strong arts culture, while Bridgeport is a working class Irish community known for cultivating politicians and civil servants. Though the river is currently perceived of as a barrier, my urban scheme and building seek to bridge these two communities. The Urban proposal unites these communities through a series of green interventions, and reshapes the urban fabric by overlapping the communities and creating a destination of mixture and interaction. The building is an extrusion of land bridging across the Chicago River to connect Bridgeport and Pilsen. Its interior spaces are carved out as though excavated from the Earth. The building is a bridge between communities, a barrier facilitating the reversal of the Chicago River, and a limnology center for the study of the river’s water. Visitors are drawn, from both the Pilsen and Bridgeport sides of the river, towards the sacred space at the center of the building- The Carp Sanctuary. As visitors make their way towards the Sanctuary, they are guided through massive earthen exhibition walls that tell the story of the Chicago River, and around glass encased spaces revealing scientist hard at work. At the Carp Sanctuary, visitors are astounded as Asian Carp jump out of an aquarium habitat to heights of up to ten feet in the air.

The studio was challenged to reject the notion that cities can be master planned, and instead to think of the city as a series of small interlinked experiences. Students created two videos demonstrating the power of understanding “The City” as a generator of experiences rather than a cluster of buildings.

For the first film, students were challenged to imagine new and exciting ways the center of Paris could be redesigned to accommodate a growing number of inhabitants. The second film called for us to focus on an underprivileged part of the city in the North of Paris called Port de La Chapelle. Students were encouraged to create a sequence of images depicting ideal spaces, then design buildings based on those images. The resulting architecture would be, not only aesthetically pleasing, but an egnaging experience for its occupants. ABANDONED LA CHAPELLE RAIL YARD TURNED PARK

The “Treehouse School” recognizes the abilities of designed space to stimulate people’s minds and feed their imaginations. The goal of The Treehouse School is to provide Kindergarten children with an exciting and stimulating learning environment that encourages play and educates children in new and unexpected ways. As stated in the competition brief, learning institutions are most effective when children feel safe and at home, implying that school buildings should be thought of as a child’s secong home. In search of a form that speaks to children and makes them excited to attend school, the design begs the question, “ What is a child’s ideal house?” The Treehouse is inspired by childrens’ common fascination with treehouses and dares to propose a building where each classroom is indeed a modern interpretation of a treehouse.

BEAUTY OF RECYCLING (2012) LAND ART GENERATOR INITIATIVE FRESHKILLS PARK STATEN ISLAND, NY SHORTLISTED ENTRY The “Beauty of Recycling” Project seeks to enforce the importance of recycling by proposing solar energy collectors that not only harvest the Sun’s energy, but create a spectacular light show during the twilight hours. These solar energy collectors, composed largely of recycled materials, float on top of the water durring the day and collect solar energy. A small amount of energy will be reserved for a daily “Twilight Show”, with the the rest of the energy being distributed to local power grids.
These spheres, made of recycled plastic, are tethered to the riverbed by anchored pulleys controlling their various heights and levels of submersion. The spheres will go through a daily cycle of collecting energy from dawn to dusk. When the sun begins to set, the devices are submerged underwater and multi-colored LED lights within the devices will begin to glow, creating a spectacular light show for park visitors that compliments the natural beauty of the setting sun.
