ÎÎÎIt was drama on Thursday as
attempt to remove the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Momoh Jimoh Lawal, turned the chamber into a theatre with two members laying claim to the office. Earlier, in a press conference, some members of the Assembly indicated that the Speaker
had been impeached along with two other principal officers, the Deputy Speaker and the Minority leader. They said they elected Honourable Godwin Osuyi, as the new Speaker while Honourable John Abbah was elected as Deputy Speaker. But in a swift reaction, the Speaker, Hon. Lawal, said he was still in charge of the House, saying that an attempt by some members
to impeach him was foiled by majority of the members. Lawal, while addressing journalists at his office in Lokoja, on Thursday, stated that what happened was ill–motivated attempt to hijack the leadership of Kogi State House of Assembly by some members, who he described as ‘unpatriotic’. The embattled Speaker urged the aggrieved members to note
that power comes from God and God alone. He called on the members of the House of Assembly to remain focused and committed to the ideals of the founding fathers of the state. According to him, when the House became rowdy, he had to adjourn sitting to allow frail nerves settle down, saying that members will resolve themselves.
The embattled Speaker, who was alleged to have moved away the mace from the chamber, adjourned the house to February 2, 2016. The situation in the House was not without a violent drama as some people sustained serious injuries, including a police officer and the NTA reporter who had his Continued on page 6

Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial Marking Human Rights Day
O
n Thursday, the international community observed December 10, 2015 as Human Rights Day. The day is set aside to commemorate the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It would be recalled that the formal inception of Human Rights Day dates from 1950, after the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) inviting all states and interested organisations to adopt December 10 of every year as Human Rights Day. Although the Declaration with its broad range of political, civil, social, cultural and economic rights is not a binding document, it inspired more than 60 human rights instruments which together constitute an international standard of human rights. The theme for this year’s Human Rights Day is; “Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always.” The focus on “freedoms recalls the theme that underpin the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as first articulated in 1941 by the United States President, late Franklin D Roosevelt. The four freedoms are: freedom from fear, freedom of speech, freedom of worship and freedom from want. Even though many countries recognise human rights and the rule of law as the basis for fair and stable societies, the majority of them especially in Third World countries still lack political institutions, judicial systems and economics that allow ordinary people to live with dignity. In Nigeria, the constant abuse of human rights has been at forefront of national discourse for several years with successive governments doing little or nothing to improve the situation. It is a fact that many of the state security agencies carry
out their duties with brazen impunity and total disregard to the constitutional rights of the citizens. There is no denying the fact that the police, military and other paramilitary outfits behave as if they are above the laws of the land. Most appalling is the increasing incidence of extrajudicial killings by the police, as our prisons and detention centres are full of suspects that are detained for months and even years without judicial trails in competent courts. For example, the fundamental human rights Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution Section 35(3) stipulates that “any person who is arrested or detained shall be informed in writing within 24 hours (and in a language that he understands) of the facts and grounds for his arrest or detention.” Section 39 (1) says “every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference.” Unfortunately, most Nigerian citizens do not even know their rights, or even when they are abused and how to fight for their rights. Coupled with such sad commentary are cases of human rights abuse such as rape, kidnapping, torture, child trafficking and marriage, sexual molestation, which are becoming a societal norm. It is therefore not surprising that Global Rights Watch ranks Nigeria as the world’s 10th worst human rights offender. As the world marks Human Rights Day, we call on government at all levels to ensure respect for and protection of human rights in the country. In addition, human rights violations should be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators brought to book to serve as deterrent to others.

Life is full of contradictions for sure. About seven months ago, while it reigned in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), not only pride itself as the largest political association in Africa, it also curried enormous favours from the high and mighty. The party used to have a seemingly inexhaustible purse. That seems history now. The PDP is now ‘broke’, to use a milder word. The once courted, boisterous party is in dire need of rejuvenation. During its reign, the party considered relocating from its
Wadata House headquarters to a new, high rise 12-storey building in the Central Business District of Abuja. The estimated N11 billion building surely would have best portrayed then Nigeria’s ruling party, as it were. But Chief Olisa Metuh was recently quoted as saying that the PDP has no money to complete its new secretariat. Of course, PDP’s loss of the Presidency could not be taken out of the reason for this change of fortune especially the near abandonment of the project. Metuh was quoted as saying that the party had planned to use a substantial part of the money realised from its sale of forms for the last general

election to complete the project. Also, the party, Metuh said, resolved to channel some of the proceeds of the N21 billion realised at its Presidential fund-raising dinner, but this never happened. The whole game changed when the party lost the Presidential election. Metuh claimed that the NWC of the party was promptly directed to divert money meant for the project to the campaign of the party’s governorship candidates and lawmakers across the country. Had the party been more purposeful and focused, it would not have been in this situation. The lovers of the party should rally round to have the project come upstream.

Crisis hits Kogi Assembly Continued from page 1 camera smashed. Meanwhile, the House Committee chairman on Information, Honourable John Abbah, stated that the action of the 17 members of the House became imperative in view of the demand to remove the Speaker before now. Abbah explained that before now, there had been several moves to remove Lawal, but the lawmakers had been managing him, stating
that the 17 members could no longer manage him and others. Abbah, who said that he is the new Deputy Speaker, stated that the speaker was impeached because of incompetence, greed and betrayal of the members. Those who were said to have been removed along with the Speaker are the Deputy Speaker of the House, Honourable Alih Akuh and Minority leader, Honourable Hassan Bello. Meanwhile, members of
the House said that they have elected a new speaker, Honourable Godwin Osuyi, while Honourable John AbAbbah was elected as Deputy Speaker and Honourable Eneche Ojochemenemi Linus as the new Minority leader. Speaking also, the newly elected speaker, Godwin Osuyi, stated that the impeachment exercise had nothing to do with the political situation in the state. He pointed out that all the 25 members are capable
of becoming the speaker of the House, stressing that if anyone is not competent, such can be removed, saying that the House has been adjourned to December 16, 2015. Honourable Moses Ododo, member representing Dekina/biraidu State constituency, said there is no love lost as this is not the first time a speaker is being removed, adding that “this is democracy in action, this is what is permissible as far democracy is concerned. We
have looked at the former Speaker that he is not competent to handle the affairs of the Assembly”. But the member representing Lokoja 1, Honourable Umar Ahmed Imam, whose name appeared on the impeachment list, denied being part of the plan impeachment, saying that his signature was forged. Umar pointed out that he was aligning with the lead-
ership of Lawal, calling on other members to give peace a chance. Also speaking, the member representing Igalamela/ Odolu, Honourable Friday Sanni stated that the whole process of the impeachment was a charade, noting that the rule of the house was not strictly followed. However, the new speaker, Godwin Osuyi, adjourned the house to December 16.

They, therefore, main-
tained that any fruitful dialogue must be led by the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The group said: “There is new development; we want to react on the so-called dialogue between Nigerian government and some people who claimed they are representing us. “We were shocked to learn that some Northern leaders and Senator Godswill Akpabio met and discussed about our agitation. “These persons that sat in Abuja, even the people from the South-East, we disown them; we don’t know them; before you discus, you must first of all discuss with those on the street; we don’t know Ak-
pabio, we don’t know Dozie Ikedife as far as this matter is concerned; Ikedife is not part of what we are doing; he has shown hatred for Nnamdi, so how can he meet with government to discus Nnamdi?” The Biafra group added that: “We also understand that Ikedife’s Bilie Human Right Initiative has their own agenda, they have firm belief in Nigerian constitution; we, the MASSOB members don’t have belief in Nigeria’s constitution because it is a fraud against our people. “The MASSOB and other pro-Biafra groups advise Bilie Human Right Initiative to retract their belief in Nigeria’s constitution
because this ties our hand to unknown law against our people. “For the past one month, we have been protesting peacefully over Nnamdi’s release; if Nigerian government is sincere over dialogue, they must meet with the leaders of MASSOB and the IPOB. “It is curious that Akpabio, who disowned us, who said that Akwa Ibom is not part of Biafra, now wants to negotiate on our behalf, this is fraud; we are advising the Nigerian government not to take them serious, we shall continue our peaceful and non-violent protest. “We have two simple demands- release Nnamdi
Kanu, give us Biafra; we are not agitating for good roads or infrastructure. “These people that claim to be Igbo leaders are not in control of the masses, we shall soon demand for a referendum, that’s the next step so that the whole world will know that the people are no longer interested in Nigeria. “Any dialogue with the Federal Government without Nnamdi Kanu is nonsense; we demand that he should be released and he will lead the dialogue.” On Ralph Uwazurike who had now formed a new group, MASSOB said “he is a confused person, he is Continued on page 12

Concerned elders urge Buhari to address insecurity, injustices Mathew Dadiya, Abuja
ÎÎÎElders
of the North, South-South and South-East have expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity and insurgents activities in Nigeria calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to be fair and balance in his policy and developmental agenda of change. The concerned elders met late Wednesday in Abuja to dialogue on the festering crises in parts of the country, particularly the implosion the unrelenting protests of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra portend for the country. Chairman of the forum,
Amb. Maitama Sule, expressed very deep concern over the rising spate of insecurity in various parts of the country, worrying that the violent dimension of the current agitations of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra has led to avoidable deaths. They also reviewed the increasing cases of violent abduction and kidnapping in the South-South, the aggregation of which constitute threat to National Unity and Stability. The Dialogue, with the theme “Agenda for Strengthening National Unity and Stability,” had Amb. (Dr.) Maitama Sule as the Chair-
man, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, Chairman of South East Elders Forum, Sen. Godswill Akpabio and over 40 elders and leaders in attendance. While admitting that the unity of Nigeria is important, the Dialogue in its assessment of the prevailing state of affairs in the country identified the following as part of the fundamental causes of the crises in the country. “There still exist lingering issues of national question which precipitate anger, acrimony and animosity in our body-politic. The historical and brazen reign of impunity, culminating in policies
of exclusionism in critical facets of national governance have continuously precipitated strong feelings of alienation, frustration and antagonism. “The near absence of the spirit of respect for all component parts of Nigeria and indeed the inability to ensure equal opportunities for all may continue to remain our albatross unless urgent remedies are taken. No leadership in the world has successfully maintained peace in its domain except the rights of citizens are respected and not emasculated, repressed or denied” the Dialogue noted.

Bayelsa: PDP warns APC, INEC, military not to truncate democracy Lateef Ibrahim, Abuja
ÎÎÎThe Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) has warned the All Progressives Congress-led federal government not to do anything that could truncate the nation’s hard earned democracy. The PDP maintained that the present terrorism and general insecurity in the country are more than enough and that nothing more should be done to further heat up the nation’s polity. The acting National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus gave the warning
on Thursday in Abuja after carefully reviewing the conduct of the cancelled election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Secondus alleged that the military wanted to rig the election for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, Mr Timipre Silva. Secondus, while addressing journalists in Abuja, said that the PDP was told that security agents came with armoured vehicles, harassed and intimidated people of Southern Ijaw Local Govern-
ment. According to him, “The report that we got from Southern Ijaw was indeed alarming and discouraging. “We were told that security agencies came with armoured cars, harassed and intimidated the people. “We want to appeal to the Army to face the military job and avoid anything that can brew crisis to Nigeria; we have enough to battle,” he declared. Secondus pointedly stated that Southern Ijaw Local Government is a PDP stronghold since 1999, noting that
no magic will change it overnight. His words: “The election has been won already and the governor and the good people of Bayelsa state have spoken”. The PDP acting National Chairman advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies to respect the will of the people. According to him, “Nigeria, today, is faced with several challenges: the Boko Haram in Northeast, the challenge of Biafra, the separatist group in the South East.

The association described the step as one of the ways to reduce involvement of youths in social vices. Describing the step as a relief to the youths, the association noted that all hands must be on deck to reduce social vices such as robbery, rape, examination malpractices and kidnap-

In a communique issued at the end of a two-day meeting in Ibadan on Thursday, “A Review of the BILL To Professionalise Social Work Practice in Nigeria Pending before the 8th National Assembly” signed by NASoW National President, Mr. Olawale Kolawole and Director, Social Welfare, Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development, Lagos State, Mrs. Laide Latinwo, respectively, NASoW commended the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for its support for the introduction of the Bill and implore them to intensify efforts on the passage.

Senators call for huge borrowings to fund development

Amidst dwindling resources which may hinder development projects of the Muhammadu Buhari administration in next year’s budget, senators have called for huge borrowings in order to get resources to fund the project. The senators argued against piecemeal borrowing which they observed was not good enough if the developmental projects of the administration were to be funded adequately, calling for borrowing up to N50 trillion. This came as the senators
disagreed on the $38 per barrel oil proposed by the Federal Government as the oil benchmark for the implementation of the 2016 budget contained in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper forwarded to the upper chamber on Tuesday by President Muhammadu Buhari. Besides, the senators were also divided in their views on the continued payment of subsidy by the Federal Government in the next fiscal year going by the current hardship being faced by Nigerians as a result of
the current fuel scarcity in the country. Contributing to the debate, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (Bayelsa East), who kick started argument on huge borrowings lamented that the 2016 projection was not better than 2015 budget estimates, and advocated the deregulation of the petroleum sector. Warning the Federal Government to make adequate arrangements to cushion the effect of the action, he canvassed the need to borrow heavily to the tune of N50tn for the rapid
transformation of the nation’s industrial sector. He also canvassed the need for the National Assembly to review the budget every three months. His words: “This budget is not different from last year’s budget. There is disparity largely in the area of exchange rates. All successive governments have made the wrong argument on deregulation. “The correct price of petrol is usually found in Abuja, Lagos CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

According to him, she must be invited to say what she knows about the disbursement of funds meant for the purchase of arms and ammunition under the Goodluck Jonathan administration if ongoing investigation into the matter must be complete. The Edo State governor expressed shock by revelations from the ongoing prosecution of former National Security Adviser, (NSA) Colonel Ibrahim Dasuki (rtd), saying what had been revealed may just be a tip of the iceberg. His words: ”I am shocked. I have been talking about it, I just said to a couple of persons, the government have to go the whole hog, because I know as a governor that no money gets out of the Treasury even after I have approved as the governor without the approval of the commissioner of finance. “That is the procedure, so the probe should go into whether all these monies are appropriated, all of it, when the money got out of the Treasury through who? APC has moral burden not to repeat PDP’s errors - Umeh
Umeh
Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, has warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has a moral burden not to repeat the same mistakes made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while in office for 16 years. He said the APC which came into power on the crest of the ‘Change Mantra’ must not derail in the manner of the PDP. According to him, the former ruling party, PDP, has no moral
ground to be crying over any form of injustice. Umeh said that the party was dead, having lost its god-mother and god-father, adding that the PDP should bury its head in shame, just as he described the party’s 16 years administration as the worst in the history of Nigeria’s democracy. Umeh who was speaking with journalists in Enugu, said: “what PDP did to Nigeria in 16 years is the greatest disservice to democracy.” It would be re-called that the Appeal Court had on Monday nulli-
fied the election of Senator Uche Ekwunife’s of the PDP, on account of Umeh’s petition. The court ordered a re-run within 90 days. The APGA chieftain who contested the Senatorial seat with Ekwunife maintained that even though he won the election, the PDP manipulated the process with impunity and used the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Ekwunife the winner. Government should ask what the price of transportation is, not how much a litre of petrol is. “We should think of a mass transit policy which will cost not more than N100bn which is about 10 per cent of what we spend on subsidy. “If you spend the same amount of money on transportation after deregulation, nobody will protest on the streets. Nobody in the United Kingdom or United States knows the price of petrol but in Nigeria, everybody knows because we have made the wrong arguments. “If you have to borrow N50trn, then borrow it and industrialise Nigeria over night. We must look at the budget every three months and adjust it as we go on. It doesn’t matter who the president is, our interest should be Nigeria”, he stressed. Also contributing on huge borrowings, Senator Tayo Alasoadura (Ondo Central) said borrowing in trickles does not promote development, explaining that huge borrowing which spans 50 years will go a long way to foster growth and development of the economy. In another contribution in support of the debate, Senator Barnabas Gemade (Benue North-East) said huge borrowing would give Nigeria the platform to advance the nation’s economy. According to him, people are
Saraki always aggrieved about borrowing because the purpose was usually being misplaced, noting that if borrowing was geared towards enhancing internal production, Nigeria’s economy will rise to the level of Japanese and Brazilian economies. Gemade also cited China as one of such nations which he said borrowed to transform their economies. Senator Solomon Adeola (Lagos West) faulted the government’s N1.8tn projected borrowing in 2016, saying piece-meal borrowing would not be healthy
Buhari for the nation’s development and advocated heavy borrowing to drive rapid development. He noted that Brazil developed its economy through borrowing, and that by Nigeria’s recourse to meagre borrowing plan in 2016, the Federal Government would soon return to the National Assembly to seek permission to borrow more. On the appropriate benchmark to be adopted, while some senators agreed with the Federal Government’s position on oil benchmark because of the falling global oil price, others
Ekweremadu believed that many state governments would be thrown into further financial crisis if the benchmark was not increased. The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, had opened the debate with regret that the usual habit of the executive to submit both the MTEF and the annual budget to the National Assembly late every year was counter-productive. He insisted that this unwholesome act usually forced the legislature to carry out shoddy jobs, which he maintained, was not good for the critical consid-
eration of the annual financial document of the country. He said reiterated the need to raise the oil benchmark from $38 to $40 per barrel, describing the $38 per barrel benchmark proposed by the executive as conservative. Expressing the hope that the global price of crude oil had the potentials to rise to about $55 per barrel in the next fiscal year, he said that increasing the benchmark to $40 per barrel would be of immense help CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

Those Minister of Finance, including Okonjo – Iweala, I don’t care what people say, because you cannot be coordinating a corruption-ridden economy and you pretend to be an angel, you cannot selectively deal with issues, you must deal with all involved in the conspiracy, in criminal law when two to three people are involved in a act of criminality, all of them are charged with conspiracy. “You cannot get money out of the Treasury without getting it endorsed and for a government that talks about transparency, due process and I am unable to accept that money will come out without the Minister of Finance having to

endorse document and if you endure documents, you must follow through to see that the purpose through which funds are released are actually used for that purpose. “The NSA is supposed to be an advisory officer, he is not sup-
posed to be a procurement agent for government. I am happy the figures are coming out and I know that this is a tip of the iceberg and I read some reports, the numbers are in billions. “Dasuki is just one bleeding
point, there are several bleeding points in the system, you look at the total number of expenditure on subsidy which the World Bank had released figures just now, about how many trillions of Naira over the past four to five years, now you lay your hands on the various appropriation bills passed by the National Assembly and see how much the National Assembly appropriated for subsidy for all those periods, you will find they are not even up to half of what was spent. Which means money not appropriated for was spent. If people are involved in those acts they must be brought to justice.” But Okonjo-Iweala slammed Oshiomhole, over what she called the governor’s campaign of falsehood against her describing the allegation of illegal diversion of monies recovered from the late Sani Aba-
cha against her by Oshiomhole as baseless. A statement by Paul C. Nwabuikwu, Media Adviser to Dr. OkonjoIweala said: “As part of the campaign of falsehood against former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala by Edo Governor, Adams Oshiomhole and other powerful and corrupt interests, another baseless story has been published by some online media. “To achieve their evil propaganda objective of tarnishing her name, these evil elements have distorted the contents of a memo dated January 20, 2015 in which the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala responded to a request by the former National Security Adviser, Col Ibrahim Dasuki (retired) requested for CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10

funds to prosecute the terror war against Boko Haram. “Here are the facts: The central responsibility of the Minister of Finance IS to find sources of funding for the financing of approved national priorities such as security, job creation and infrastructure. “It will be recalled that throughout 2014, there were public complaints by the military hierarchy to President Goodluck Jonathan about the inadequacy of funds to fight the anti-terror war in the North East, resulting in Boko Haram making gains and even taking territories. A lot of the criticism was directed at the Federal Ministry of Finance under Dr Okonjo-Iweala which was accused of not doing enough to find funds for the operations. “In fact, the Ministry, on several occasions, had to call press conferences to provide details of budgetary spending on the military, to show, against the background of limited resources and other urgent national priorities, that it was doing its best on funding security. “It was about this time that some new Abacha funds of about $322m were returned with another $700m still expected to be returned. (This is not to be confused with the Abacha funds returned in 2005-2006 under the Obasanjo government whose use for developmental purposes was monitored by the World Bank as earlier
Okonjo-Iweala explained by Dr Okonjo-Iweala). “Former President Jonathan set up a Committee comprising of the former Minister of Justice, former NSA and the former Minister of Finance to determine how best to use both the returned and expected funds for development. “The NSA made a case for using the returned funds for urgent security operations since, he noted, there cannot be any development without peace and security. Based on this, a decision was taken to deploy about $322m for the military
Oshiomhole operations, while the expected $700m would be applied for development programmes as originally conceived. “Following the discussions and based on the urgency of the NSA’s memo, Dr Okonjo-Iweala requested the President to approve the transfer of the requested amount to the NSA’s Office for the specified purposes. “But, as captured in the memo, she insisted on three conditions: (a.) Only a part, not the entire Abacha funds would be spent on the arms; the rest would be in-
vested in developmental projects as originally conceived; (b.) the money was to be treated as borrowed funds which would be paid back as soon as possible ; (c.) the NSA’s office was to account for the spending to the President who was the Commander in Chief, given the fact that the Minister of Finance is not part of the security architecture and does not participate in the Security Council. “The attempt to link the former Minister’s name to any misuse of
these funds for any purpose other than security as far as she understood it is totally false and cannot stand.” Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has described the alleged diversion of funds meant for arms procurement as a breach of trust, noting that the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration spent money for the procurement of good arms and ammunition to prosecute the war against insurgency but the process was abused at various levels. He said his administration could not turn a blind eye to the abuse hence its decision to investigate with the hope of recouping diverted funds adding that the fraud perpetuated which he said was unfortunate, was unraveling, saying, “We cannot keep quiet and it’s coming out gradually. And it’s most unfortunate.” The president regretted that the Nigerian military which was well regarded because of its exploits in the past could no longer secure 14 out of the 744 local governments in the country. He however, noted that terrorism was a worldwide phenomenon, saying, “If the terrorists can kill 150 people in advance country, who is Nigeria?” The president stated that terrorists that can kill people in churches and mosques, do not know God. He sought the support and understanding of the members of the House to secure the country and manage it efficiently.
Group lauds Buhari over priority projects Tunde Fapounda The Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) has commended the Federal Government for listing the 2nd Niger Bridge and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as priority projects under the projects to be executed by the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing in the 2016 budget. In a statement by Muhammad Labbo and Cassidy Madueke, Coordinator and Secretary respectively, BMSG stated that by the singular gesture, it is obvious that the Federal Government means well for all sections of the country, especially the South East where infrastructure deficit is most worrisome. It also demonstrates President Buhari’s commitment towards ensuring that the South East zone feels the impact of the “change” he promised Nigerians. Consequently, BMSG called on
Buhari Biafran agitators to give peace a chance in order for the expected development to take place in the region. It is only in an atmosphere of peace that the much-needed infrastructure development can be realised, it added.
It pointed out that the Federal Government’s decision to restart the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is praiseworthy considering their socio-economic impact to the nation’s economy.
The group recalled that for many years, the two key infrastructure projects have been neglected to the point where they became the focal point of protests and agitation and indeed death trap to the citizens. It also commended President Buhari’s commitment and support to the military in the ongoing war against insurgency in the north east of Nigeria, saying the president deserves commendation on the military’s recent successes on the war against insurgency particularly on the destruction of camps and cells of the dreaded sect in Sambisa forest. The BMSG commended the military for these feats and also showered praises on the military’s resolve to meet the president’s December deadline on the defeat of the insurgents. According to the group: “Within the last three months, the Military have successfully degraded
the insurgent group, who today have no place in Nigeria and their hoisted flags brought down”, noting that on the advice of the president, the military have stepped up their game in its bid to defeat the insurgents with high level success recorded so far. It acknowledged that the recent successes of the military in its onslaught against the Boko Haram sect are a direct impact of the president’s painstaking decisions to restructure the leadership of the military and to galvanise both regional and international support against the dreaded sect who have maimed and rendered thousands of Nigerians homeless particularly in the north eastern part of the country. According to the group, “Since President Buhari took over power, he has given unprecedented support to the Nigerian military and this has, in great measure, improved the morale of our soldiers”.

How to transform Nigeria, by Don A don has challenged both the executive and legislative arms of government on the transformation of the country urging them to work in unison in the interest of the nation. Consequently, he charged them to revisit the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and pass it into law for the effective management of the sector and transformation of the nation’s economy. Besides, he also implored them to prevent and control all huge leakages from the nation’s revenue processes of oil and non oil sources inclusive. Former Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering and currently Dean, School of Engineering, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro in Ogun State, Prof. S.A. Olagoke made the recommendation in his lecture titled: “National transformation for sustainable development: a management challenge” at Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) Zonal Distinguished lecture. “Corruption and wastages in governance must be minimised or eradicated. Right attitude to work in place of slovenliness, and solvency and impunity is desired”, the dean said in his 28-

areas of weak lines most especially from the lower middle and bottom 14 for possible focus to increase the Gross Domestic
Olagoke pointed out that the best of leadership was a transformational one which was expected to change the form, nature, condition and function of the personality, character and the system positively to a better productive end. “In our own situation in Nigeria, Managers, administrators and researchers need to beam their searchlights into the following areas of our governance style. Need for reorientation on poor work attitude to a higher productive index, provision of basic amenities and maintenance culture of our infrastructure. “There must be policy formulation and implementation to a people oriented one. Functional system of education, religion, academics and infrastructures” he said. The academic called on the Federal and state governments to holistically address the high unemployment rate in the country adding “there is a need for paradigm shift from an era of impunity and peak of corruption”.

firm stance on the diversification of our economy; we can no longer rely on oil as the major source of our revenue”. But Senator Ahmad Lawan, (APC, Yobe North), said the government’s decision to peg the oil benchmark at $38 was in order, saying: “We can do better in the next few years having suffered in the last couple of years. It is likely that the prices of oil will improve so we should retain the $38 per barrel proposed”. He urged that other sources
of revenue generation should be tapped into to fund the budget. Reiterating this view, Senator Solomon Olamilekan believed that the $38 oil benchmark should be retained but that the committee should still reconsider the implications. He however faulted the 30 per cent for capital development, stressing that it should be 40 per cent, in order to engender rapid development. Senator Jibrin Barau disagreed with arguments for the
to many states of the federation which he said had been struggling to pay salaries. However, Senator Adamu Aliero (APC Kebbi Central) said $40 per barrel was unrealistic because: “from what we have been hearing, oil price may continue to fall even below $38 to $34”. His words: “I will recommend that we take $35 per barrel. It is now time for Nigeria to take a
removal of fuel subsidy, describing it as a kind of welfare arrangement for Nigerians. In his contribution, Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator John Eno, noted that the bulk of the revenues for the funding of the budget would come from non-oil sources, describing the move as a departure from the known tradition when budgets were prepared on the basis of projected revenue from the oil sector. He, however, expressed concerns that the document placed more emphasis on solid minerals and agriculture without considering others like industrialisation. However, Senator Albert Bassey (Akwa Ibom North-East) advocated outright removal of fuel subsidy, regretting that the pump price of fuel was being sold at N87.00 only in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. He also stated that in Akwa Ibom and several other states, fuel was being sold at the pump price of N97.00.

They are made up of hypocrites; the PDP’s time has just ended; it is a political party that should be dismantled”, he stressed. He said he is happy that the present administration is cleaning the corruption rot of the PDP, stressing that the PDP promoted corruption; and wondered why its members are now afraid. “Look at the revelations coming now; PDP should bury its head in shame. PDP should be banned from speaking because Nigerians hold them in great contempt for the way they desecrated democracy”, he added. He expressed confidence that he would win the rerun election. His words: “the number of people who had reached me ever since this judgment was delivered is overwhelming. I have used it to gauge the mood of the people; they are so excited. “Besides, we are very hopeful this time that the votes of the people will count; there will be no god-mother, god-father and the use of presidential might to suppress the will of the people. “The PDP that has been using that has fallen from the federal power; the PDP is now like fish out of water”, he added. Umeh added that APC came with a posturing of change in Nigeria and does not expect that the party would want to muzzle the electoral process. “APC has a moral burden not to repeat what the PDP did to opposition parties,” he said.

Dokpesi being investigated for another N8.44b fraud – FG Andrew Orolua, Abuja
ÎÎÎThe
Federal Government on Wednesday asked the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to refuse Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi the founder of Daar Communications Plc, owner of African Independent Television (AIT) and RayPower Radio, bail because an investigation of his involvement in another
fraud totaling about N8.44b is ongoing. Dokpesi, who was arraigned in court on six counts charge on Wednesday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly laundering the sum of N2.1 billion and defrauding the Federal Government same amount had applied for bail before Justice Gabriel Kolawole.
Giving reasons why the court should refuse the bail application, Prosecuting Counsel, Jacob Rotimi (SAN), said that the release of Dokpesi from custody would be dangerous and injurious to an investigation of another fraud committed by him involving the sum of N8.44 billion. He said Dokpesi collected the sum from the Federal Government on January
27, 2012 over none existing contract with Federal Government but in connection with Television Airing Right of FIFA under 17 World Cup hosted in the country. “Dokpesi is not entitled to bail in view of the document filed, nature of offences, evidence, his availability to face trial as he will jump bail”, Jacob stated. The prosecutor said that
the offences which Dokpesi is facing carry an imprisonment terms of five to seven years. The evidences, the prosecution added, are overwhelming as the accused collected N2.1 billion allocated to fight insurgency from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and used it for campaign in favour of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while Nigerians were being killed. Counsel to the accused, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), had while moving the bail application urged the court to admit Dokpesi to bail in self-recognisance or on liberal terms as the alleged offences were bailable
under the law He said that Dokpesi is a known personality that would not jump bail, moreover he is innocent. The defendant counsel also told the court that Dokpesi had an appointment with his medical doctor abroad for a treatment of an ailment two days before he was arrested. Trial judge, Justice Kolawole, in reserving the ruling, said he needed time to study the further and better affidavits that were filed by both parties on Thursday before the sitting commence. Consequently, he reserved the ruling till Monday, December 14, the day fixed for trial.

Biafra: MASSOB disowns S’East, S’South leaders’ peace talk Continued from page 6 propagating the oneness of Nigeria; Igbo land is not landlocked, Biafra is not landlocked, the Biafra the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu declared in 1967 is not landlocked. “Uwazurike is a forgotten issue, nobody should take him serious. He is the greatest saboteur of Biafra. His name is a taboo. “Similarly, there will be a revolution against so-called Igbo leaders who are making negative comments against Biafra.” Meanwhile, the All Progressives Grand Alliances (APGA) and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MAS-
SOB) has lambasted former Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation during the Second Republic, Chief Richard Akinjide, over his statement that Biafra is dead in Nigeria. Akiinjide, who spoke to the Daily Times in reaction to the sustained agitations of the IPOB for the actualisation of Biafra Republic said that the agitation of the group would come to nothing as according to him the issue of Biafra Republic is dead and buried. To this end, National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Barrister Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, dismissed Akinjide’s claims, describing it as not only spurious but smacks
of an elder statesman that is bereft of the impetus that led to fresh Biafra agitations. He said: “Without doubt, we all condemn the senseless protests and recent violence in Onitsha leading to destruction of property and loss of precious lives. “Be that as it may, the Biafra issue cannot die in the minds and fallen spirit of Ndigbo as long as the government at the centre continues to treat Ndigbo as second class citizens in this country. “As long as the South East zone remains the only geopolitical zone with five states, all other zones have six or more; as long as economic policies of the government at the cen-
ter continues to destroy the commercial life of Ndigbo, Biafra cannot be said to have died”. Obi-Okoye further posited that the only way to address the Biafra issues is to address the critical issues affecting Ndigbo as addressed in the truncated National Conference. “Foremost is the disproportionate issue of resource allocation based on the number of local government councils, number of seats at the National Assembly. “I can assure you that it is only when those recommendations of the National Conference are implemented concerning Ndigbo, can those agitations for Biafra begin to disappear. If these
issues continue to linger and remains a cause of anger and frustration of Ndigbo, the Biafra dream would remain in the minds of the people of Igbo land”. Speaking in the same vein, the new leader of MASSOB, Comrade Uchenna Madu, contented that Akinjide is one of those that were bent on frustrating the aspirations of Ndigbo during the civil war and after. Akinjide should go and bury his head in shame to have made such hopeless and malicious statement against ndigbo and Biafra in general. The Yoruba people have never experienced any civil war before and Lagos has been the capital of Nigeria, so they found them-
selves lucky” “You can imagine the fate of the South West if all the multinational companies and other business concerns move out of Lagos and relocate to other parts of the country. “We have not forgotten the sabotage of the South West against Biafra and the economic blockages that were instituted at the insistence of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo that impoverished our people. “However, we salute the Noble Prize winner, Prof. Wole Soyinka, who saw and experienced the war in the eastern Nigeria for his support and sympathy for the Biafra agitation. He is a true commander.

FG owes fertilizer, farming implements suppliers N42bn Henry Omunu Abuja
ÏÏÏThe Minister of Agriculture,
Chief Audu Ogbeh has revealed that the federal government is owing suppliers of fertilizers and other farming inputs a staggering N42billion, just as the Buhari administration is planning to ban the importation of wheat into the country in 2016 to encourage local farmers. Chief Ogbeh disclosed this Thursday in Abuja, during an interactive session with members of the House Committee on Agriculture. The minister who said the na-
tion must focus on encouraging mass participation in agriculture so as to be self- sufficient in food production and as a consequence create employment, added that it is imperative for Nigerians "to go back to the land". While assuring that the government doesn't intend to carry out any policy somersault in the agricultural sector, the minister however, said the major challenges facing the sector is the huge debt incurred by the federal government in the procurement of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs. "We have challenges in fertilizer
distribution and other farming inputs; the federal government is in debt of N42billion for fertilizer and other inputs supplied by suppliers. "Nigeria doing well in area of rice production and in another two to three years, we will be self-sufficient in rice production and be able to export to other countries", he said. The minister accused smugglers of causing havoc to the nation's ability to achieve set objectives in the agriculture sector, especially the illegal importation of sub-standard and expired items through the nation's borders with Cameroon and Seme.
To stem the activities of smugglers, Chief Ogbeh said the administration plans to forward legislation to the National Assembly for passage into law in order to address the unwholesome smuggling of food items into the country, as well as considering the outright banning of some of the items being smuggled into Nigeria. Furthermore, he said the administration will in 2016 ban the importation of wheat into the nation in a calculated attempt to encourage local farmers of the grain and put a stop to the expenditure of $5biilion the country spends annually on the wheat import.

Abakaliki The governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the April 11 election in Ebonyi State, Chief Edward Nkwegu will today know his fate on the appeal against the judgment of the election petition tribunal, which upheld the election of Chief Dave Umahi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor of Ebonyi State. Election petition tribunal had in October this year, in Abakaliki, dismissed the petition filled by Chief Nkwegu challenging the declaration of Chief Umahi as the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for lacking in merit and the inability of the petitioner to prove allegations of corrupt practices and criminalities as contained in the petition. Dissatisfied with the judgment of the tribunal, the petitioner proceeded to the court of appeal sitting in Enugu to challenge the verdict. In the appeal filed by his counsel, Chief U.N Udechukwu (SAN), Nkwegu prayed the appeal court to set aside the judgment of the tribunal describing the verdict as a grave error of law.

Niger Imams appeal to exam bodies Saka Bolaji Minna
ÏÏÏThe
Niger State Juma'at Mosques Imams Forum, have appealed to examination bodies in the country to have a redress over the unfair ways and manner Muslim candidates are being treated and denied of worship during examinations. This was contained in a letter of complaint with heading 'Complaint Against Fixture of WAEC, NECO and NABTEB Examinations at Prayer Times /Sallah Days' to the Minister, Federal Ministry of Education, signed by the Forum Chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Isah Fari and Secretary,
Dr. Umar Farooq Abdullahi respectively, copies of which was made available to journalists in Minna on Thursday. The letter urged the minister to avail himself with copies of the referred exams body’s timetables, drawn at various times in conflict with Muslims prayer times, as the forum has received several complaints and grievances from the Muslim Ummah, thereby calling for a change. Consequently, NECO timetable in 2015 Nov /Dec commenced on Monday, 26th October, 2015 and ended on Friday, 4th December, 2015, while NABTEB did same by scheduling examinations on the same prayer period, as well as on
Sallah day, describing it as unfair to Muslim Ummah because examinations were never written on Sundays or Christmas days. According to the forum prayers in the letter, Fridays, especially the hours between 12 noon and 4pm, Eid-el Fitri whole day, Eidel Kabir, three days from Eid day and Eid-el Maulud day to be considered, adding that exams should not be held in those days of the year. The letter was copied to President Buhari, National Assembly, Northern Governor's Forum, Niger State governor, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Traditional rulers, as well as other relevant bodies.

Lord, heal President Buhari of Jetphilia
A Idang Alibi
lmighty Father, the time has once again come when I, your most humble servant, elect to use a public forum to reach you. I usually do so when an issue which seems to defy the collective prayers and counsel of millions of well-meaning Nigerians comes upon the land. Father, this time around the issue has to do with our beloved president, Muhammadu Buhari, who has so early in his administration gone down with a very terrible disease call jetphilia. Millions of Nigerians and I have detected in the president a very bad symptom of this, mercifully, curable disease. I am urgently reaching you now out of our deep concern that he needs to be healed of this malady like yesterday for his health and for the health of the nation. You, of course, are the creator of the world and all in it, including words, so I do not need to define or describe the nature of this disease for your understanding. But for the benefit of some of my countrymen and women who may not know this disease, let me proceed to give a brief description of it and the harm this non-communicable but nevertheless fearful condition can do to the sufferer-president and the country he is presiding over. This disease, I must point out as a part of its case history, is most common among African presidents. That is why some of us are most alarmed that if its viral load is not quickly reduced or completely expelled from the bloodstream and psychology of our president, he will not only suffer from extreme jet lag, the country will suffer from a most devastating socio-
economic anomie. As my compatriots whom I need as witnesses may have guessed from its mere name, jetphilia is the extreme love of jets or extreme passion or fascination for jets. For the purpose of this discourse, it is the tendency among mostly African presidents to hop into one of the usually many jets in the presidential fleet of their country at the slightest prompting or provocation and go all over the world either looking for elusive foreign investors, or seeking for miserable aid, or searching for photo opportunities with presidents and prime ministers of more successful countries or attending meetings and conferences of very doubtful dividends or fora which they can be ably represented without any harm done to the interests of their nations. Jehovah Adonai, the self-existing one, African presidents seem to believe that the solution to the many problems of their countries lie abroad and not here on the continent. Sir, bear your servant witness concerning his sharp prophetic ability. In my piece of four weeks ago entitled African Leaders in India, I had humbly lamented this bug and prophesied, correctly, that when our PMB leaves the Afro-India summit in India which nearly all African heads of government attended and were promised 600 billion dollars in aid over some time, he will soon head for CHGOM (chop government) meeting and that thereafter, he may go for the Afro-Sino meeting in China. I have, unfortunately, been proved right. After CHGOM which held in the island nation of Malta, our President left for a climate change meeting in France. He did not even have the time to touch down very briefly to say hi to we home
folks before again jetting out. He flew straight from Paris to South Africa for the Afro-China Cooperation Meeting. I said it and I scored a bull’s eye. Sir, our continent is dying from this Afro-something meetings and conferences. We have, as already pointed out, Afro-India summit, Afro-China conference and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group meeting. If Afro-American; Afro-Caribbean; Afro-Latino, Afro-Iberian; Afro-European and Afro-Brazilian meetings do not already exist, I am pretty sure that someone somewhere in Africa or out there is thinking of them and they will soon become a reality because African leaders simply love meetings and the jets they travel to them no matter how far-flung the venues may be. These Afro-something meetings have not contributed in any appreciable manner to our continent’s earnest quest for development. Sir, I am not yet a president or prime minister so I do not know how they think. But as an ordinary citizen, I would like to think that if you have tried all these forms of meetings, whether bilateral, unilateral or multilateral and they have not helped you much, why do you not consider another strategy? Why do they not engage in some meditation and come to an understanding that the remedy for our malady lies in constant meetings with internal stakeholders? The only way a man whose house is not in order can fix it is to be within; a cracked or leaking house cannot be repaired from without. Lord, I solicit your quick and most efficacious healing of our president because I am most alarmed that he is fast depleting the enormous goodwill he is enjoying with Nigerians without taking advan-
tage of that asset to tackle some of the many hydra-headed problems most presidents find expedient to handle in the honey moon days and months of their presidency. PMB ought to have, by now, removed the ruinous fuel subsidy but he feared drawing down on some of that goodwill. He ought to have decided on a wide-ranging ban on food import, but he demurred for the same aforesaid reason. He ought to have waded into the raging controversy about reducing the minimum wage or going for a substantial purging of the bloated public bureaucracies across the 38 governments plus the 774 local governments in the land. He ought to have voted for a sale of the epileptic refineries and announcing a package of incentives for the private sector to go into the refining of our crude. He ought to have given a signal about his willingness to tackle the perennial Fulani herdsmen-farmers conflicts. I have so many ‘he ought tos’ that the president ought to have done by now or give hearty indication that he would confront headlong but which his jetphilandering or jetphiliarisis has not allowed him to pay attention to. OBJ gallivanted and brought us a tobacco company. God forbid that PMB should jetphilander and bring us a brewery as his dividend. Lord, after healing PMB of his jetphilia disease, give him a powerful shot of jetphobia vaccine so that he will, for the rest of his tenure, lose the love of jets and sit at home, roll up his sleeves, moblise and motivate the citizenry to squarely face the problems of the country whose solutions neither lie in Asia, America, India nor China but right here at home. Amen.
No finishing school for Oshiomhole
I
Uwa Eghomeka
have read, first with discomfort, and then with something akin to horror, the words that have been attributed to my dear governor, Adams Oshiomhole. I call him “my dear governor” for two reasons; first, I am indigene of the nation’s big heart; and second, one of the ballot papers of the Edo state 2012 gubernatorial election bears my thumbprint. However, I am beginning to think that this may very well be the last time he will be labelled with such an endearment, at least by me.As Labour leader, he was everyman’s hero; the voice of the people, the light in darkness. His booming voice and pointed remarks directed at those who were deemed oppressors were lauded because we believed that at the heart of all the drama was a man who believed in one thing-the people. As governor, we expected the transference of that passion into the governance of the state; we expected that he would demonstrate leadership, honesty, and respect for the people of his state; and with respect-
ability too. We expected also that as our number one man, he would do so with some finesse and at the very least, a modicum of regard for the office and a huge dose of common sense. Sadly, we expected too much as Oshiomhole is now carried away with being more of a needless voice than functioning in the service of the people. The once noble and passionate Osho has become a clanging cymbal. “Empty vessels make the loudest noise” can be no more personified as it is currently being exhibited by Adams Oshiomhole. A leader of men need not speak every single time it pleases his fancy to open his mouth and voice his opinions. A leader of men should always exhibit a great measure of restraint. There is something enigmatic about a man who knows when to hold his tongue. People are often found hanging on his every word with bated breath because his words are few. You talk too much, and more often than not, you end up a laughing stock. I mean, who takes the village jester seriously? My “dear governor” has become the Prince of
Jesters. When I think of Oshiomhole’s last stunt and how he has once again started his mad dance of circling around issues without evidence and flinging accusations at Dr Okonjo-Iweala left, right and centre, what really hits me is the difference in the style of both individuals. One of the first questions that crossed my mind was if Dr OkonjoIweala attended any finishing school. Her poise, her complete control over her speech is often in direct contrast with Oshiomhole’s crass and crude mannerisms. If indeed she attended any, does she think they will be willing to admit Adams Oshiomhole for a semester or two? Then again, after being exposed to his tactlessness, they just may decide that his is a lost cause. Because added to the unrefined manner of speech and behaviour, it appears mixing with the wrong crowd may have worsened his case. The lack of tact is one thing, but when coupled with what now appears to be a dubious character and a vindictive spirit, I’m afraid this governor is
on a downward spin. Who knows, some may like the challenge of “Reforming the Unreformable” and decide that some training in cultural values and norms refined social graces, etiquette knowledge, and polished appearance may do him some good. One thing is for certain; with soft skills being the in-thing, this governor of my beloved state had better get his act together, and fast! Or for how long does he plan to claim one thing only to have his claims refuted publicly (remember his remark about a U.S government official confiding in him about a certain former Nigerian government official stealing billions)? The way I see it, two paths lie ahead of Oshiomhole; the path of dignity, honesty, backing up claims with concrete proof, integrity, decorum and sincerity of purpose and mission; or he may take the path which is the very opposite of all these and certainly leads to career suicide. In truth, he need not attend any finishing school to decide what sort of man he wants to be; that decision is one he must make without fear or favour.

Child malnutrition: Nigeria’s silent crisis UNICEF advocates breastfeeding among nursing mothers A health official addressing mothers of malnourished children
Sometime this year, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Nigeria invited journalists to Kano as part of its activities to mark “Breastfeeding Week”. It was also an occasion to solicit for media assistance on ways of sensitising authorities and other stakeholders on the crisis of child malnutrition in Nigeria. OKAY OSUJI was there and reports.
A malnourished child with the mother
The venue was the Grand Central Hotel, Kano city where journalists from various media houses gathered at the invitation of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to mark the “Breast Feeding Week”. The programme was to enlist the media in sensitising nursing mothers and other
stakeholders on the imperative of breastfeeding newborns beginning from one hour after birth to six months of life, even without single drop of water. Declaring the workshop open, UNICEF chief nutritionist in NIgeria, Arjan de Gwat lamented the high incidence of child malnutrition in the country, which he said is a major cause of stunt growth among them. He pleaded with the media to collaborate with the agency and bring to focus the issue of breastfeeding among nursing mothers. According to him, breastfeeding has many benefits for both mother and baby, as breast milk contains all the nutrients an infant needs in the first six months of life. This plea and message was reechoed by UNICEF chief of communication, Doune Porter who
in her remark called for intensified media advocacy on child nutrition in Nigeria, even as she noted that past efforts have been responsible for the increasing awareness on the importance of breastfeeding among mothers. She noted that early initiation of breastfeeding ensures that the infant receives the colostrums, or ‘first milk’, which is rich in protective factors. Moreover, a child’s nutritional status is a reflection of his or her overall health. Ms Porter maintained that the absence of adequate nutrition results in undernourishment, thereby allowing room for lowered resistance to infection and more likelihood of death from common childhood illnesses. Following the inaugural speeches, the tone for the twoday seminar was set. Kicking off under the theme: ‘MalnutriCONTINUED ON PAGE 18

BREASTFEEDING: 1,000 children under five years die from malnutrition daily – FMH Poor nutrition in the first two years of child’s life can lead to stunted growth, which is irreversible and is associated with impaired cognitive ability, reduced school and work performance. tion - Nigeria’s Silent Crisis’, one resource persons after the other harped on the need for concerted actions to eliminate this health malady among Nigerian children. Making his presentation, the Deputy Director and Head of Nutrition, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Chris Isokpunwu pointed out that poor nutrition in the first two years of child’s life can lead to stunted growth, which is irreversible and is associated with impaired cognitive ability, reduced school and work performance. He reiterated that to be well fed, children must eat the right types of food the right number of times a day. The deputy director advised that children be fed on food sufficient in micronutrients for them to escape the vicious trap
of stunting. According to him, research shows that infancy is the peak age for faltering of certain micronutrients and common childhoods illnesses, such as diarrhea, even as he advised that children should eat food with enough iodine, Vitamin A and iron. Supporting the presentation with a graph, Isokpunwu said that in 1990, the number of children in Nigeria with stunted growth was 43 percent and by 2013, it fell to 37 percent, which is only a decrease of 6 percent. Lamenting the slow progress, the nutritionist said at the rate the country is going, it would be difficult to reach the 40 percent mark by 2025. He maintained that even at 37 percent, it shows that about 12 million children in Nigeria are stunted - a number equivalent to population of
some countries in the world. According to UNICEF bulletin, the global target is to reduce stunting by 40 percent, and maintain wasting below 5 percent by 2025. The agency noted that more than 25 percent of children aged between 1-10 years in Nigeria suffer from malnutrition. Survey also shows that 1 in 5 children in Abuja is stunted, while more than one third of children in Mushin, Lagos are malnourished. Surprising is fact that 13 percent of children among well-todo Nigerians are malnourished, even as 43 percent among them are stunted, while 50 percent of child mortality is caused by malnutrition. Corroborating this, statistics from Federal Ministry of Health, showed that 1,000 children under five years die daily in Nigeria, while 145
women also die during childbirth. Incidentally, these deaths are due to malnutrition. What is malnutrition? It is a condition, which occurs when people consistently do not consume or absorb the right amounts and types of food and essential nutrients essential for physical and mental growth. The main indicator of childhood malnutrition is stunting – that is, when children are too short for their age. Unfortunately, stunted children have poor physical growth and brain development, preventing them from thriving and living up to their full potential. Result shows that Nigeria has a stunting prevalence of 32 percent among children less than 5 years of age; while about 21 percent and 9 percent are underweight and wasted respectively. In general, malnutrition prevalence in North West and East regions are higher than in the South. Notable among the causes of stunting is Acute Malnutrition, which occurs because of rapid weight loss or a failure to gain weight within a relatively short period. Disaggregation by geopolitical zones shows that acute malnutrition is highest in the North East at 12 percent and
North West at 10 percent and lowest in Southeast and North Central at 5 percent each. Incidentally, an important nutrition indicator is exclusive breastfeeding of which Nigeria is still lagging behind. For example, 63 percent of infants fewer than six months in Ghana are exclusively breastfed, while only 17 percent are exclusively breastfed in Nigeria. According to UNICEF, Nigeria is facing a crisis of child malnutrition and ranks second behind India among all countries with the highest number of such cases. Almost 30 percent of Nigerian children are underweight and that is more than double the proportion of Ghanaian children who are underweight. The percentage of children, who are wasted, or too thin for their height, has steadily increased over the last decade, rising from 11 percent in 2003 to 18 percent in 2013. Globally, stunting is now recognised as the main indicator of malnutrition and can be prevented by employing good care and feeding practices such as exclusive feeding and complementary feeding during a child’s first two years of life. to capacity as Journalists from all parts of the country were in attendance, just as friends, relatives and associates of the awardees came from within and outside the state to honour the awardees. The awardees, who were selected after careful scrutiny include the first civilian Governor of the state and a two term senator representing Osun West senatorial district, Alhaji Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke who bagged the NUJ’S distinguished award in Political
Excellence and the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Muiz Banire who received the union’s Evergreen Award for Humanitarian Services. Other awardees were the Chief of Staff to Osun state Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola who was conferred with an award of Excellence in Public Administration and Dr. Benoy Berry who was decorated as the Man of the year of the union at the elaborate occasion.
The National President of the NUJ, Alhaji Waheed Odusile who was represented at the occasion by the Vice President of the union in zone B, Mr. Cosmos Oni, said the awardees were scrutinised by the national secretariat of the union before they were given the awards, saying that the awardees all merited the awards conferred on them by the union. pointing out that despite the hazards associated with Journalism, Journalists are the least paid set of professionals in the country. He tasked the federal and state governments to ensure the safety of all Journalists in the country, just as he called for the involvement of media practitioners in insurance policy organised by the national secretariat of the NUJ. Odusile who noted that the programme was his first official outing after his emergence as the National President of the NUJ, enjoined all media organisations in the country to ensure prompt payment of salaries and allowances of Journalists to ensure efficient delivery, even as he called for professionalism among practicing Journalists in the country. Speaking, the chief host at the ceremony who is the Chairman, Osun state council of the NUJ, Comrade Abiodun Olalere said
Abdulwaheed Odusile, NUJ president
the union arrived at the names of the awardees after thorough scrutiny and inquiry by the State Executive Council of the union, stressing that all the awardees are men of proven characters and integrity who really merit the various awards conferred on them by the union. Olalere who spoke glowingly of all the awardees, maintained that the union was determined to celebrate diligence, integrity, hard work and steadfastness, hence the choice of all the awardees who he said have all distinguished themselves in their various callings. He said the union also decided to present awards on some members who have excelled in their chosen profession and gave the names of recipients of the union’s professional awards as Yinka Kolawole who emerged Best Reporter (Print), Wasiu Ajadosu (Best Radio Reporter), Seyi Makinde (Best Television Newscaster), Saidi Adeboje (Best Radio Newscaster) and Gideon
Adegboye best Information Officer. He said the initiative was a way of celebrating members of the union who excelled in their profession, stressing that the awardees were screened by professionals chosen by the union after careful deliberations. Chairman of the occasion, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan in his speech described Journalism as the best profession in the world, just as he described Journalism as a fraternity of the highest order. Lauding journalists in the country, Bamigbetan said journalists contributed significantly to the entrenchment of democracy in the country, and urged them to sustain the nation’s democracy through their profession. All the awardees in their speeches expressed gratitude to the union and assured of their readiness to support the union in its various activities.

To address the issue of stunting, mothers must feed their babies exclusively on breast milk for at least six months after birth. However, this fact has become a contentious issue as working mothers are complaining of lack of encouragement by various governments to give them sufficient time in form of maternity leave to do this. They are not happy that the maximum period approved for maternity leave is only three months. In this regard, seminar participants called on both the National and state Assemblies to enact legislation allowing nursing mothers at least six months of maternity leave and one month paternity leave for husbands. Seminar participants also called on both the Federal and governments, including corporate bodies to establish plants for the production of therapeutic foods, as is the norm in South Africa and Niger Republic. On this, UNICEF officials lamented a situation where Nigerians refuse to invest in the production of therapeutic foods on the grounds that being a humanitarian venture, returns on them are very miniscule. Incidentally, estimates put the cost of such venture at less than $3million per plant. Furthermore, UNICEF disclosed that it spent $47.4 million to feed mal-

nourished children in Nigeria between 2009 and March 2015. That means an average of $70 per child. Final day of the seminar meant that participants had to visit an outpatient Therapeutic Centre at Yanakawi, a suburb of Kano city; they saw many of the malnourished and stunted children including their mothers. Participants shed tears at the sight of the children and their mothers, as many saw first hand the tragedy wrought by acute malnutrition on Nigerian children. Tragically, Yanakawi is symptomatic of the scale of child malnutrition in different parts of the country. Back to the seminar venue, resource persons and partici-
pants respectively resolved that the media should employ every communications platform to sensitise all relevant authorities, including international humanitarian agencies on the urgent need to eliminate child malnutrition in Nigeria. Before end of the seminar, participants brainstormed on ways of keeping the issue of child malnutrition alive. Towards this, the “Stop Child Malnutrition Nigeria” Hashtag was adopted. Everyone agreed the hashtag be constantly streamed on all social media platforms as part of campaign towards bringing the issue of child malnutrition in Nigeria to the front burner of national discourse. Now, it is trending on social media platforms.

STREET TRADING:
Eking a living in harm’s way
The instances of street trading are synonymous with Lagos with the attendant dangers palpable and come in split seconds, but poor economic condition leaves with little or no option. EFOTOBO COMFORT reports.
Street hawking in Lagos is part of everyday life. Children, mostly boys and girls aged between seven and teenage, are involved in the practice, oftentimes chasing moving vehicles in traffic on highways. While adult men rarely carry trays on their head, they usually settle as newspaper vendors, deal on sports articles, and fashion wears. Daily Times gathered that many engage in street hawking due to poverty and a desire by many traders for greater sales and profit. Ten years old Monday Brown who hawks Oranges along the Agidinbgi road said he hawks to help his guardian make ends meet since the orange business was the only means of livelihood for his guardian who also hawks. Many females especially fall into the hands of men and young guys who would ask them for sex
so as to help them with the money they lost and most times, some of these girls are raped and given nothing. Their male counterparts beg until they find those merciful enough to give them a part or the whole amount lost whiles some venture into stealing. 12years old Hosanna Emmanuel narrates her ordeal during her early days of hawking. She was abused at nine but just could not tell anyone. “I don’t live with my parents, so that day, “ I lost all the money from my sales of over 400 naira. I was crying when one uncle saw me, asked why I was crying. I told him then he promised to give me the money so I stopped crying. Before he gave me the money, he rubbed my body and then told me to always come to him anytime. That incidence brought fear to me that I feared going through that way for a long time and I became extra careful with any money from my sales”. Said Hosanna. It will take a literate or semiliterate adult to know about the great danger in this act but it is unfortunate that many if not all of these parents and guardians are ignorant of them. And many are just inhumane as they would
never risk engaging their own children in this street hawking life; their greed and desire for great gain at the expense of the safety of these innocent children makes them insensitive and nonchallant about the issue. Also, many are not aware of the child laws guiding against the act talk less of the impending punishments that accompanies the violation of these laws. If these laws and disciplines are effectively communicated to these parents and adults, it would bring a great effect in curbing the high rate of child street hawking in Nigeria.

Bill seeking death penalty for fake drugs dealers scales Second Reading

and for other matters connected therewith”. Leading debate on the Bill, Olujimi, who raised the alarm on the high level of fake and counterfeit drugs circulation within Nigeria, called for immediate action on the part of the government to stem the tide. The Bill was unanimously endorsed, while Senators canvassed for even death penalties and confiscation of properties of all offenders as good measures for scaling down the growing influence of fake drugs business in Nigeria. Senator Olujimi, however, said importers and manufacturers of fake drugs have found new ways of beating the mechanisms put in place to crack down on the trade, arguing that the laws against fake drugs deserve to be amended, a reason she proposed the Bill. Olujimi described fake and counterfeit drugs as the highest weapon of terrorism against public health in Nigeria given its tendency to ‘kill the masses’. She said fake drugs have consistently been embarrassing healthcare provid-
ers, while eroding the confidence of the public on the health delivery system with the rate of treatment failures often experienced in most health care centres in the country. She said the business of fake and counterfeit drugs has been growing in the country because of the law put in place to check the spread is weak. She said the regulatory agency on drugs, NAFDAC, ought to have been empowered to enable it carry out its responsibilities with ability to impose stiffer penalties on offenders. She said, “The Weakness of the law breeds lawlessness, resulting in impunity, oppression, exploitation and violation of human rights regarding the case of drugs counterfeit. The Amendment Bill, according to the Senator also canvasses increase in the punishment for those who hawk, display, or sell drugs, not dully licensed or registered by appropriate authorities in the country. While the old Act on Fake and Counterfeit drugs prescribes only a fine not

ÏÏÏA Bill seeking to amend
the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods law in Nigeria, scaled the second reading in the Senate on Thursday. The amendment Bill, among others prescribes punitive punishment, including life imprisonment for anyone culpable of importing, producing and distributing counterfeit and fake drugs, as well as unwholesome processed foods in the country. The Bill sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi is titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Process Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap C34 Laws of the Federation
Saraki
exceeding N500,000, or imprisonment term of not less than two years for offenders, the Amendment Bill provides for a fine not exceeding N2 million or imprisonment for a term of not less than four years or both fine and imprisonment. Part of the punitive punishment the Bill provides for offenders include making elaborate provisions for seizure of assets upon conviction. The Bill also provides for disposal of proceeds of crime under the Act by NAFDAC and payment of the proceeds into the victims compensation fund. However, other Senators who contributed on the bill insisted that punishments must be awarded to offenders, including the establishment of special courts to try violators of law on fake drugs. Senator Ben Bruce summed up the dilemma on fake drugs in Nigeria, alluding to cases whereby Nigerians would travel to India and China to specifically order for fake drugs which they, in turn, would ship to Nigeria.
Abuja ÏÏÏSpeaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has said that unlike the practice in the past, no corrupt individual or group, would get presidential cover or protection under President Muhammadu Buhari. He said such attitude in the past had prevented a lot of corrupt persons from facing prosecution because of their presidential cover and protection. Dogara said this on Thursday in Abuja at the commencement of the investigative hearing by the ad hoc committee set up by the House to probe the award of rail contracts from 2010-2014 for the rehabilitation of rail tracks, maintenance of bridges and the procurement/rehabilitation of coaches and locomotives. In his words: "I assure you this time around, no such person(s) will have a President to run to for a cover or protection from appearing before you to answer questions regarding allegations of corruption against him.” The Speaker also refuted
insinuations that the investigation into the contract was to witch-hunt some persons. He continued: “We must note however, that this investigation is not a witchhunt of any person. Indeed, we have no scores to settle with anybody; the only scores we have to settle is against corruption, inefficiency or waste in the administration of funds belonging to Nigerians. We are only performing our sacred constitutional duties", Dogara said. He also charged members of the ad hoc committee to be thorough in their investigation and ensure that Nigerians get value for their money in the probe.

Abuja ÏÏÏThe Presidential Amnesty Programme, on Thursday, announced that it has concluded arrangement to pay the beneficiaries the two months stipends owed them by Tuesday next week. In a statement signed by the media and communication consultant, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Owei Lakemfa, said the Amnesty programme received a number of enquiries from benefi-
ciaries of the Programme on the delay in the payment of their October and November, 2015 monthly stipends. The statement said the Amnesty office was awaiting the release of its quarterly Federal Allocation which has now been received, maintaining that the beneficiaries will be paid the two months stipends not later than Tuesday 15th December, 2015. The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordina-
tor of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (Rtd), in the statement thanked the beneficiaries for their cooperation, understanding and support which has seen peace return to the Niger Delta Region. He assured that 1,225 of the beneficiaries will be empowered before the end of December, 2015 to set up their own businesses and become self-sufficient. The Special Adviser urged that this group of beneficiaries and
2,500 others that had been previously empowered, should strive to hire unemployed youths in their areas. General Boroh assured that concerted efforts are on to ensure the sustainable reintegration of all beneficiaries and urged them to continue channeling whatever complaints they have through the normal means of communication or to make use of the 24-Hour Amnesty Call Centre on 0809-0088-337 or 0703-5611-612.

Bayelsa guber: Group demands immediate deployment of DIG, CP Akam James
Yenagoa ÏÏÏA political group under the guise of United Governorship Forum for credible elections, have called for the immediate deployment of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Arugungun, and the State Commissioner of police, Nasiru Oki, from Bayelsa State, over allegations of extreme level of bias in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the recent gubernatorial elections in the state.
Buhari
Briefing newsmen in Yenagoa on Thursday, the 11 gubernatorial candidates accused the duo of conducting themselves in the most despicable manner through their unprofessional conduct by taking sides with the APC and thereby allowing the reign of terror and other criminal acts. The group also canvassed that all electoral materials used in the botched Southern Ijaw election should be jettisoned and new materials deployed to conduct the fresh poll, adding that the military high command in Abuja to completely withdraw all soldiers deployed to provide security in the area. “The military failed woefully by conniving with the APC and some unscrupulous INEC officials to rig election in seven wards in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, we know that some of the hijacked materials are still in the hands of APC thugs and if not changed,
those same materials will be used to rig the rescheduled election” We also want all the NYSC members held hostage by thugs and militants loyal to the APC to be released unconditionally and without further delay, those innocent youth serving our nation were held hostage and must be set free with immediate effect. The group also called the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari, to immediately check the undue interference of the Secretary to the Government of the federation (SGF), Minister of Defence and the Director General of DSS, over accusation of manipulating the electoral process in favour of their preferred candidate. They threatened to boycott the elections if all their demands are not met, noting that President Buhari should wake up as the country is gradually sliding into collapse democratically.
of Universities, Lagos State Universities chapter, has called on the Governing Council of the university to prosecute all those involved in atrocities under the immediate past vice chancellor Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa. According to the union, it would serve as a prevention measure to others with such motive in future. At a briefing in LASU Thursday, the union charged the Council to make public several reports by the unions bordering on double standards, nepotism and imbalance in promotion and appointments embarked upon by Obafunwa and his cohorts. This is in addition to urging government to replace the union’s vehicles of NASU and SSANU damaged by government during the March 16 crisis. Chairman of ASUU-LASU Adekunle, Idris said the Council has reissued his certificate and that of one Mufutau Yussuf which were withdrawn by Obafubnwa earlier in the year. He said the new certificate returned to him on Thursday now reads: ‘Business Administration’ as against ‘Business Administration (Marketing)’ which was signed by Obafunwa in 2012.

Dutse ÏÏÏWorried by the poor patronage of banking transactions by the people of Jigawa State, the CBN has adopted some measures towards ensuring that 80 percent population of Nigerians get access to banking transactions by the year 2020, the Director CBN Financial inclusion, Mr. Attah Oguche has said. Briefing the press shortly after the bank's stakeholders and customers interactive meeting in Dutse, Oguche stated that CBN is aware of the problems associated with the people running away from banking culture where it has taken steps to check mate. The meeting noted with dismay that indices has shown that 51.6 per cent adult population of 3.1million of Jigawa indigenes have no access to banks, leaving only 13.4 per cent equivalent to 1.7m people in Jigawa state that have access to banks. Least on the problems are lack of public enlightenment on banking procedures, significant usage, as well as high increase rate on lending among others.

A statement signed by the Director General NCAA, Capt. A country divided against itself
ÏÏÏ Last week, the debate over ethnic nationalism, identity and power politics took the centre stage of our public discourse that folks who grew up in Nigeria of the 1970’s and 1980’s and experienced the public debates of our yesteryear public intellectuals, the type Edward Said described in his “Representations of the Intellectual” as those who neither “make his or her audience feel good” nor look to political “gods for unwavering guidance” enthusiastically considered it as a return to the glorious past. Though the debate centered on ethnic nationalism and identity, it also highlighted the irreconcilable views, at least, of those who took positions, particularly, on ethnic nationalism and power. One view queried those who disarticulated what appears to me as the National Question while posing it as minutiae questions of ethnicity and identity. Two other views queried the way the National Question was framed and identity pressed into a straitjacket that de-legitimated smaller particularistic identities, and in a manner that eroded the contestation of the historical evolution of the national space, within and without the constitutional framework. The fourth view challenged
ethnicized discourses and exposed the dangers of the single strand ethnic narrative, the dangers of constructing the “correct version” of history, the dangers of unhelpful problematization of ethnicity and identity, the dangers of establishing a new victim agency and the dangers of negotiating the national space at the level of the ethnic, religious or the cultural. One point central to the fourth view is that addressing oppression and domination requires examining the possibility of developing and sustaining the civic federation. The questions remain: how can the civic federation be developed and sustained within the contested national space? How does civic federation address the National Question? Can the civic federation dissolve small particularistic identities? The articulators of this view need to provide answers to the foregoing questions. The foregoing is at once my summary of the debate between Jibrin Ibrahim (Resolving the Igbo Question), Chidi Odinkalu (The Igbo Question- A Response to Jibrin Ibrahim), Okechukwu Ibeanu (Resolving the Igbo Non-Question: Pitfalls of Jibo’s Single

Strand Ethnic Narrative), Chidi Onumah (We are all Biafrans!), Adeolu Ademoyo (Biafran Secessionist Call, Not an Igbo, Question) and Victoria Ohaeri ( On Jibrin Ibrahim’s Resolution of the Igbo Question) and the objections to what Jibrin Ibrahim argues in “Resolving the Igbo Question” as the failure of the Igbo elite: “the biggest failure of the Igbo elite is the incapacity to play the political game. To be major players in politics requires team and coalition building. If the Igbo elite really wanted to get the presidency, they should have developed a more inclusive narrative about the Nigerian state they needed to convince and reassure the others, not frighten them about a revenge mission”. At the risk of generalizing the arguments of the debaters, let me itemize

what I consider as commonalities, though not in the sense that the arguments were advanced. First, that the country is divided by ethnicity, by ethnicized politics, divided still by ethnicized discourses and by ethnicized narratives of its own past, fault lines which reinforce the basis of division. My sense is that it is the hollowing out of what occupies the national space-ideals, vision, ethos, identity, etc- and the desire to destroy what has been hollowed out, recover and frame it within a new national space, a new modernity-that highlights this commonality. Second, ethnicity is implicated in the way our politics is ordered. Here, our ethnicized political discourse, our ethnicized politics, our ethnicized democracy, our ethnicized participation and repre-
sentation connect with power in a devious way. This is what I mean: the ethnicized political accentuates unhealthy competition and rivalry, dissolves political and social unities while foreclosing the possibility of mediation. Third, there is something fundamentally wrong with our nationstate. The nation-state doesn’t embody the will, vision, dream and identity of citizens who prefer to identify with the ethnic or the tribe. The inability of the nation-state to take root in the hearts of citizens should have formed the starting point for the public debate. In what appears as a poor claim of “my Mercedes is bigger than yours”, Ibrahim, Odinkalu, Ohaeri, and Ibeanu to a lesser extent, failed to recognize the commonalities of their views beyond
“the single strand ethnic narrative”. The views I have summarized here do not essential address the resurgence of ethnic nationalism and of secessionist calls, neither do they interrogate the demands of secessionist groups like the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, nor provide clarity to the centrifugal forces pulling our country in different directions. Understanding the dimensions of ethnic nationalism, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra type, invariably helps us appreciate the portents. Ethnic nationalism that resists marginalization, that contests the illusion of a colonial legacy and the historical evolution of the national space is what the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra promote in my humble opinion. Art Review Prolific writer, Chike Ofili and his colleagues, recently, got a raw deal from an interstate transport company. Now, Ofili, who is also a social activist and public affairs commentator, wants the management to account for his missing belongings, following alleged deceit and fraud by the staff, while travelling to Kaduna in the company’s bus, which, reportedly, was more like the notorious yellow ‘Molue’ bus in Lagos.

Writer ‘loses suit’ to transporter
Ofili (middle), with some of the stranded ANA members at Ibadan
Agozino Agozino Lagos-based writer and poet, Chike Ofili, is still in ‘pains’, unfortunately, he is not the only one affected; his fellow writers have one or two stories to tell. Recently, members of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Lagos chapter, were to travel to Kaduna for the association’s 2015 national convention, so the executive committee arranged with the popular Cross Country Transport Company in Lagos. However, the journey became more of a nightmare than pleasure. Ofili and 18 other male and female colleagues had arrived the park at the agreed time, save for two persons, looking forward to a pleasurable trip to Kaduna, but, when it was time to board the bus, which, expectantly, would be comfortable, their hope was dashed, as, he alleged, the Cross Country management pulled out a Coaster bus, that was, reportedly, in a bad shape and had just returned from the company’s workshop for repairs, as it was discovered later.
When the bus arrived the Jibowu, Yaba, Lagos park of the company, where the writers and some journalists had been waiting for quite a while, Ofili, with his suit carrier, secured the first seat to the left of the door for himself. As he took his seat, he put the carrier on the top hanger by the window to wade off the sun. However, five other travellers, going to Zaria and Kano, joined the ANA members in the bus. The journey, actually, began at about 9.30am, but, hardly had the bus reached the Anthony area of Ikorodu Road, when it began to give signs that the trip might not be pleasurable, after all. The driver, who refused to open up on the actual state of the vehicle, left the ANA members with no choice than to demand that the company should arrange for a healthier vehicle when they get to Ibadan. This request generated a lot of shouting as they called one Tunde of the Jibowu park and one Shade, who claimed to be a sister or sister-in-law to the owner of the transport company. They reminded the duo that
The journey, actually, began at about 9.30am, but, hardly had the bus reached the Anthony area of Ikorodu Road, when it began to give signs that the trip might not be pleasurable, after all. they were a group of writers and journalists and were ready to tell or relate their nasty experience to the whole world of how they were defrauded by the company. Some ANA members were already typing their nasty experiences and taking photos to send to the world through the social media, when they were prevailed upon by some members, who requested that they should hold on until they were sure of the outcome of their demand. According to Ofili, not only was the bus unhealthy; it also had no air conditioner, which was part of what the ANA members paid for. Eventually, when the bus, which was, literally, crawling, like the ‘Molue’ bus, arrived
Ibadan, the ANA members were put in two smaller buses, but, in the process of moving their bags from the faulty Coaster bus, coupled with the general restlessness and anger towards the transporter, Ofili and his colleagues forgot about the suit, which had, conspicuously, been by the Coaster bus’ window from Lagos. He said it was when the buses left Ibadan that it struck him that he was travelling without his suit, the same that his colleagues, IquoAbasi Eke and Daggar Tolar, had, earlier, teased him about. Immediately, he said, he alerted Mr. Ekpenyong, the driver of his bus. Seated in the front passenger seat, Ofili said he expressed his worry to him and he assured
him that the Ibadan park would take care of it. Ekpenyong told him also that all he needed to do was to check with the company’s park in Lagos. His colleagues also called their members in the other bus to find out if the suit was there, but, the reply was negative. However, Ofili attended the convention without his wearing suit, on his return Lagos, he met with Tunde of the Jibowu park, he asked him to see a certain Jolomy and the driver who drove the faulty Coaster bus. Ofilli said Jolomy, the senior manager of the company’s Lagos operations, first appeared polite and ready to assist him locate his suit, but, he later became evasive until he outrightly stopped picking Ofili’s phone calls. According to the angry writer, the only option left to him was to take the transport company to the court of public opinion from where his lawyer, who is already well briefed, would take them to the court of law. However, all efforts to reach the company’s management proved abortive.

Kimono
Nigeria still ‘under pressure’ -Kimono In the 1980s, Ras Kimono took the Nigerian music scene by storm with his debut, Under Pressure, which earned him many awards. This was followed with What’s Gwan? Still I Rise and a host of other chart-bursting albums. However, the Rub-a dub master went on ‘exile’ to the United States of America. Since returning back to Nigeria, he has realigned himself with Nigeria’s mainstream music, after learning a few lessons. AGOZINO AGOZINO met the amiable reggae maestro
You seem to be cheerful always, what is the secret? The secret is my philosophy about life. Because life is sweet, every day, when I get up from bed, I tell myself I must be happy because if you don’t make yourself happy, no one will make you happy, that is the secret, and one owns it a duty to himself to enjoy it. You sang in the 1980s that Nigeria was under pressure. Is the country still under pressure or are we free? We are still very much under pressure because the system has not changed. We have vampires who are lurking everywhere and would not let go, they remain the problem of this country. They work against
the progress of the nation. Because of this, majority of the people suffer for no
fault of theirs, but, Jah will purge them out some day and the nation will be free. These days, it appears that reggae music, which is synonymous with you is losing ground with the youth, who are only interested in hip hop. What is the problem? Hip hop or not, reggae music will always remain a positive force and one that helps man, especially, the black race, to freely express his sadness or joy through music. There is no problem with reggae, because it will soon bounce back. For three decades, reggae was the main choice of music at parties, concerts and on the airwaves across the world. Legends of the music like the late Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, Robert Nester Marley, Peter McIntosh, Gregory Isaac, Denis Brown, Delinger, Max Romeo, Eric Donaldson, U Roy, Eddy Grant and the late Lucky Dube, Terra Cotta, Alpha Blondy, all ruled the world. So, those who think that reggae will go into extinction don’t know what they are saying. It is experiencing a change and by the time it comes out again, it will take over the world. Reggae is music for life and it will continue to dominate the African man’s socio-political thinking. So, you are sure reggae is still a force? Of course, I’m very sure. Part of the problem is also the youth of today because they are interested in material things. Reggae artistes are mature in their approach to things. People always put their love for money above everything and this is not good. We should not commercialise music to the extent that we see everything as an avenue to make quick money. Many years ago, you
Kimono
left Nigeria for the United States of America, where you lived before returning home. What was the experience like? It is momentary change of experience because of the pressure. But I think it is like going to see further what other part of the world is. The country was under pressure and feel I should see other parts. It is normal and I am back here again. You are a Rastafarian, but, you would have noticed that many Nigerian musicians end their music career as pastors. Are you thinking along that line too? (Laughter) I am not religious, but, spiritual man, there is a difference between being religious and being spiritual. I believe in Jah as the saviour of all faithful and Jah is always ever ready to redeem his people. What is reggae stars, like you, doing to help change Nigeria? We have been shouting over the years with our music. We will keep shouting, telling bad people to desist from evil. But soon, there will be a revolution that will defeat evil. Because the way things are going on in this country is not what it should be. This revolution will consume all the bad people. So the revolution will consume all the bad people? Yes, all the witches, particularly, all the people who have made the society bad and sowed evil seed. The revolution will consume all of them. Remember the case of Abiola and Abacha. One thought he was the mightiest until a revolution took him out, so, we expect a revolution that will cleanse the country.

Africa Investigates series on corruption launched Worried by the increasing level of corruption in Africa, a Ghanaian journalist has come out with a documentary film series that reveals worst covered atrocities on the continent. Africa Investigates, which was launched recently in Ghana, is a documentary series that gives some of Africa’s best journalists the opportunity to pursue high-level investigative targets across the continent using their unique perspective and local knowledge to put corruption, exploitation and abuse under the spotlight. The series was produced by Insight TWI and commissioned by the Al Jazeera International news network. Africa Investigates was conceived by award-winning African journalists and investigators, Sorious Samura and Anas Aremeyaw Anas in conjunction with Diarmuid Jeffreys of Al Jazeera and Ron McCullagh of Insight News TV (now Insight TWI: The World Investigates). All too often in the past, African reporters have not been able to pursue wrongdoing because it, usually, involves powerful figures who wield undue
influence over local media - financial, corporate or political - or because it is simply too dangerous. Investigative journalism is a perilous profession in many African nations, where intimidation, beatings, imprisonment and death threats can be an occupational hazard. As a result, they have often had to sit idly by while Africa’s story has been told by Western correspondents, “parachuted in” for the purpose, who reinforce stereotypical views about African people and their supposed inability to face up to and solve their own problems. It is this trend that Africa Investigates seeks to correct. Since the launch of the first series in 2011, Africa Investigates has empowered African investigative journalists to produce impactful and award-winning documentary films that have revealed the truth about corruption and abuse across the continent. Now in its third season, Africa Investigates seeks to empower even more African investigative journalists to tackle the biggest and most important stories across the continent.

he Enugu State chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has lamented the abysmal performance of Rangers International FC of Enugu in the nation’s professional football league in recent years. It regretted that the club side, which
use to be among the best teams in the country, has over the years, remained stagnant at the middle of the league log, leading to incessant sorrow instead of joy to its teeming supporters across Nigeria. A communiqué signed by the state chairman, Norbert Okolie and secretary, Ignatius Okpara at the end of its congress held on
Wednesday at the SWAN secretariat located at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu, urged the state government to intervene before the 2015/ 2016 league season commences. The body therefore, enjoined the state government to urgently fill the vacuum created by the recent sacking of the club’s technical crew and other officers.

Amuneke has remained clear on the need for a review of his role as the Eaglets coach, giving hints he may not return. “No doubt coaching the national team is something I consider a huge privilege and when you even get to win honours with the national team, I think there are very few experiences that can beat that,” the former Zamalek of Egypt star said. “However, I don’t subscribe to certain situations and certainly I don’t think announcing the appointment of a coach on air without a meeting with the party involved or a written contract is not how I’ll choose to work.” “ The most important thing is that Nigeria has won but we should work on our grey areas in the team,’’ the U-20 coach said. Dream Team: Dalung orders payment of outstanding bonuses
he Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung has ordered the National Sports Commission to source for funds for the immediate payment of all outstanding match bonuses and allowances owed the players and officials of the Dream Team. The Minister expressed unhappiness that the players were being owed a backlog of allowances and bonuses since their last competition. “This is an emergency problem we inherited and I have directed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and the Director General Alhassan Yakmut to source for intervention funds to settle the players before this Saturday. The players have done extremely well under the harsh situation, moreover a workman deserves his pay. We don’t want negative stories on non-payment of players’ allowances which are capable of tarnishing the image of the country, so I have pleaded with the coaches and players to remain focused on their final game billed for Saturday as all possible efforts are being put in by the Ministry to ensure that all outstanding bonuses and camp allowances are offset before Saturday,” the minister said. Dalung watched the Dream Team defeat Senegal by a lone goal, scored through a penalty. He congratulated the team after the match and urged them to work hard to win the final game against Algeria. He has also directed that a delegation comprising top officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports visit the U-23 team in Senegal before the final. Algeria sent out South Africa 2-0 in the second semifinal tie to book a place in the finals.

They’ve got to show this more often, that must be the really frustrating thing for Arsene Wenger.” Ferdinand feels Arsenal needs a combative midfielder and has urged manager Wenger to dip into the transfer market to fill the void. “I think they need some more cover in the central defensive area. They need a dominant central midfielder. It’s not been the same since Patrick Vieira left,” Ferdinand added. Arsenal will hope to leapfrog surprise leaders Leicester City, who host champions Chelsea on Monday, in the Premier League when they travel to take on bottom side Aston Villa the previous day.

combat injury crisis
W
est Ham are set to complete their move to a new permanent training ground earlier than expected in a bid to combat the injury woes that have besieged their first-team squad in recent weeks. With key attacking duo Dimitri Payet and Diafra Sakho already lost until the new year with ankle and thigh problems respectively, Manuel Lanzini is now set to miss six weeks after the Al Jazira loanee hurt his hamstring. As if that was not quite bad enough for a team that started the season in impressive fashion but since suffered a run of five Premier League matches without victory, Victor Moses was substituted after just 37 minutes of the goalless draw at Manchester United on December 5 and influential centre-back Winston Reid picked up a
fresh injury in training earlier this week. “Winston’s injury doesn’t look good,” manager Slaven Bilic, who also confirmed that Moses is set to be sidelined for a period of four to six weeks, said in a press conference held prior to the visit of Stoke this weekend. “We don’t know how long he’ll be out for yet, we’ll know more tomorrow after the scan. He slipped early on in the training session, it looks like a rupture. He’ll definitely be out of the Stoke City game and a few more.”

John Mikel Obi (Chelsea): Mikel has hardly played for Chelsea this season with the club’s manager, Jose Mourinho clearly favouring Serbian midfielder, Nemanja Matic in the holding role. Nightmare start for Neville at Valencia
G
ary Neville endured the worst possible start to his managerial career as Valencia crashed out of the Champions League due to a 2-0 home defeat to the already eliminated Lyon on Wednesday. Goals either side of half-time by Maxwel Cornet on his first Champions League start and Alexandre Lacazette handed the French side their first European win of the season. Belgian champions Gent beat Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 to seal their place in the last 16 behind the Russians in Group H. England coach Neville was set for a baptism of fire after his surprise appointment last week with Valencia needing to win and Gent to drop points to seal their place in the last 16 for the first time in three years. The former Manchester United defender made just two changes from the side that held European champions Barcelona to a 1-1 on Saturday with Joao Cancelo returning from suspension and Shkodran Mustafi fit again to take his place at the heart of the defence.

T
he Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has condoled with former Nigeria skipper and Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, who lost his darling wife, Kate, on Wednesday night. NFF President Amaju Pinnick spoke at length with Keshi over the phone on Thursday afternoon, as news of the tragic incident filtered into the public space. Sources confirmed to Extra Time on Thursday that Kate, 54, died on Wednesday night in
i h s e K s ’ e f i w over e s i m e d United States of America, after a brief illness. “This is devastating. To lose a spouse is the equivalent of a tragedy. I pray that Almighty God will give you and the children the fortitude to bear this huge loss,” Pinnick told Keshi over the phone.
The ‘Big Boss,’ who captained Nigeria for over 10 years, in the process winning the Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze, coached the squad to a third African title in South Africa early 2013. He was in charge of the Super Eagles between November 2011
and June 2015, during which he also led the team to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil. “Keshi is a Nigerian hero and we mourn deeply with him at this time. This has come like a big blow, but we pray that he receives divine strength to cope with the situation, and we also pray that the Almighty God will grant the departed eternal rest,” Pinnick added. Keshi affirmed that his wife had been sick for a while but he never expected her to die too soon. The burial rites for the late wife would soon be made public.

Governors’ stance against minimum wage, not new — Civil Servants Joy Ekeke The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, has said that the plan by governors to reduce the minimum wage of N18, 000 was not a new development as records show that state governors fought against its initial implementation in 2011.
The ASCSN National President, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, in a statement in Lagos, recalled that as soon as the National Minimum Wage Act was passed in 2011, the Nigerian Governors Forum set up a committee led by the then Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, to examine
the financial implication of the new salary regime. “It is on record that the Fashola committee came up with a verdict that the governors cannot pay the new salary regime unless the revenue formula was restructured. Thus, if not for the nationwide protests embarked upon by workers and their trade unions, most of the governors
would not have implemented the N18,000 monthly minimum wage in the first instance. It is, therefore, not true that the governors are now opposing the minimum wage because of the shortfall in crude oil revenue. The truth of the matter is that the governors never wanted to pay the N18,000 monthly minimum wage,” the CONTINUED ON PAGE B2
CBN to stop banks’ CRR funds Mr Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of CBN, says the apex bank may not release funds due to banks following the reduction of the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) if they failed to lend to SMEs. Emefiele made the declaration at the 7th Annual Bankers’ Committee Retreat on Thursday in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the CBN reduced the CRR from 25 per cent to 20 per cent in November. Emefiele said banks had not played active roles in terms of lending to SME operators in the country. Emefiele said that the country was entering a phase where SMEs must be given priority in the nation’s growth. He said that operators in the banking industry must change, rethink and behave in ways that banks could support the SME sector. The CBN boss said that the economies that withstood the global shocks were SME driven countries. Huawei targets to become world’s third largest data storage provider by 2018 Tony Nwakaegho China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd said its target is to become the world’s third-largest data storage provider by 2018 , overtake European and local institutions to takes market share from leaders EMC Corp and International Business Machines Corp. “We don’t want to just be No.1 in China...We want to be at least the top three in the world by 2018,” Huawei’s storage product line president Fan Ruiqi told Reuters, referring to the global market for data-storage, which was worth $5.3 billion in the second quarter. To grow its market share, Huawei plans to target financial institutions, governments and telecom carriers for data storage, a business Fan said is expected to yield at least 60 per cent year-onyear growth this year from 55.6 per cent growth in 2014. He declined to reveal revenue figures, but said growth in Western Europe from countries such as Italy and Spain was particularly strong. Fan expected Huawei’s revenue from data-storage to reach at least $2 billion by 2018. Shenzhen-based Huawei accounted for about a quarter of China’s storage sector in the second quarter, ahead of EMC and CONTINUED ON PAGE B2
Oando to raise N80bn from shareholders via rights issues Tony Nwakaegho Shareholders of Oando Plc has approved the proposal to raise fresh N80 billion ($402 million) through rights issues, as the company’s board plans to make the integrated energy and oil company profitable once again. Rights issues which is the offer of shares at a price to only existing shareholders, is the company’s second in two consecutive years.
The company , which posted N184 billion losses in its 2014 full-year annual report and another loss of N48 billion in the first nine months of 2015, also plans to spin off its downstream petroleum operations, power and gas subsidiaries. In June 2015, as part of their efforts to mitigate the impact of declining oil prices and a weak naira, Oando said it had concluded a deal to sell 60 per cent stake in its downstream business.
According to the company, a joint venture owned by Vitol Group and Helios Investment Partners paid N54.65 billion or ($276 million). In related development, Oando, listed on the Nigerian, Toronto and Johannesburg bourses, received shareholder approval to issue N40 billion worth of shares out of its un-issued share capital to swap debt for equity. Desist from FX hawkers, ABCON warns Nigerians Motolani Oseni Due to indications that are rife that most Foreign Exchange (FX) hawkers are robbers in disguise, who specialise in exchanging fake currencies, dubious claims on the premise of being Naira exchange operators, Association of Bureau de Exchange of Nigeria (ABCON), has also warned Nigerians to desist from the illegal Naira hawkers. To this end, the Lagos State Government has announced its clampdown on street traders and hawkers, saying “some robbers disguise as traders in street and traffic”, warning that the perpetrators would from henceforth find the illicit act so hard to operate. Speaking with Journalists in Lagos, Chairman of ABCON, Aminu Gwadabe, pointed that there are basic differences between a registered BDC and a street hawker. Gwadabe explained that a li-
censed BDC is expected to have an office, to be registered with central bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Corporate Affair Commission (CAC) but the street hawkers don’t even have an office. He said they do not render returns because a registered BDC is required to comply with the CBN directive, Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) returns rules. According to him, street hawkers are a menace to the operation of the licenced BDC”. He said that sometimes people in the public circle find it is difficult to differentiate between the registered BDC and a street hawker. “Street naira hawkers are dangerous, once you are a BDC, people don’t want to know if you are registered or not. He lamented that this is a very big challenge confronting not only the licensed BDC but the CBN and the government at large”, he said.
union added. The ASCSN wondered why the governors who have not deemed it fit to reduce their huge salaries and allowances are bent on reducing the N18,000 monthly minimum wage. “Given the current high cost of living, the N18,000 monthly minimum wage cannot even last the average worker one week, yet the governors are bent on reducing it. This is very unfortunate, because these governors allocate to themselves, on the average, N1 billion monthly as Security Vote and spend nothing less than N18,000 daily to feed one of their pets or to recharge their phones”, the union said. The ASCSN maintained that there was no state in the country that does not have natural resources, “but instead of harnessing them, they (governors) prefer to wait for monthly handouts and now bailouts from Abuja to administer their states”. It stressed that if state governments could reduce wastages, tackle corruption, and moderate their greed as suggested by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, there would be more than enough money to pay enhanced minimum wage and carry out meaningful development in their States. The ASCSN recalled that while formulating the Minimum Wage Fixing Convention No. 131 of 1970, the body of experts of the International Labour Organization (ILO) emphasized, among other views, that the minimum wage should be premised on the “needs of workers and their families, the cost of living, social security benefits, and the relative living standards of other social groups.” The union vowed that it would shut down states if governors carry out their threat to reduce the N18,000 minimum wage or embark on retrenchment of workers.

The governor said that the scheme would be different from the existing N220 billion Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund launched in 2013. “We need to begin to agitate our minds and consider how we can support the young minds, let’s give them a chance. “The details of SME programme is going to be separate from the N220 billion. “I am saying if you the banks refuse to support, your money that we would have released through the CRR, we will take that money and lend it through any channel that will give these young graduates jobs. “We all need to think together and agree because there is no need to release the money to you and all you do with the money is buy treasury bills.

showed that the debt-equity swap with Ocean and Oil Development Partners and QPR Limited, stemmed from Oando’s existing deal with the company’s two strategic shareholders. Information at the Nigerian Stock Exchange indicated that Oando has been operating under massive debt since completing in 2014 the acquisition of the Nigerian operations of ConocoPhillips, the American oil giant, for $1.65 billion (N327.70 billion). In the nine months ending September 30, 2015, the company reported that it has a net debt of $1.77 billion (or N350.46 billion) down from $2.41 billion (or N477.18 billion) in 2014. Even though Oando announced the repayment of $100 million (or N19.80 billion) loan obtained from the African Export-Import Bank to fund ConocoPhilips acquisition, the oil company shares have remained in a slippery swing, falling by more than 52 per cent so far in 2015 compared with 34 per cent
“It can’t continue. We need to agitate our minds; we need to think about the best ways to diversify this economy away from oil. We need to get more and more people to be employed and we would need the support of the banks to begin to see how we lower our risk acceptance criteria to give support to our young graduates.” He said that CBN in few months would unfold plans to create employment opportunities to young graduates by 2016. The Lagos State Gov.Akinwunmi Ambode said that the state would soon complete the legislative process to inaugurate its employment trust fund board of trustees. Ambode said that fund would allow youths and entrepreneurs, particularly in the social enterprise sector, to be supported. Ambode said that state would start the funds with N25 billion in the next three years. He said that the entreprenuers had not accessed up to 20 per cent of the employment trust fund.
loss recorded in 2014. But speaking on growth initiatives for creating consistent future shareholder value at the company’s 38th annual general meeting in Lagos, Adewale Tinubu, the Group Chief Executive, Oando Plc, said 60 per cent sale in downstream operations was strategic in reinventing growth expectations in upstream businesses. Tinubu affirmed that cash proceeds of the divestment will be used to reduce debt and shore up the company’s balance sheet in the ongoing oil industry challenging period. “Our strategic focus is to increase our operational efficacy across our subsidiaries, deleverage our balance sheet, and return the company to profitability, whilst creating the necessary platform to be the partner of choice to the IOCs as they continue their divestment programmes,” Tinubu said He said that with crude prices in a lull and a renewed emphasis on gas globally, Oando will seek expansion of its footprint in the electric power market with the development of up to 300MW grid/embedded power projects. The area of focus in Oando growth strategy, he said include the development of 100mmscfd Compressed and Liquefied Natural Gas projects toward meeting the nation’s energy requirements.

CBN measures will cripple industrialisation — MAN Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has stated that the new forex policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will further cripple the country’s dwindling industrial growth, as some of the essential raw materials were included on the list of 41 released by the apex bank. Prince Oba Okojie, Chairman, MAN, Ikeja Branch, stated this at the association’s 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held recently, in Lagos with the theme “Serious Constraint to the Sustainability of the Real Sector.” He said; “CBN subsequently announced a number of policy measures intended to mitigate the effect of the forex down drum in the economy. A list of items not valid for forex market was published. The irony here is that the list included essential raw materials germane to some of our members operations.” He said; “The issue was raised with President Muhammadu Buhari in the presence of CBN Governor. Other issues raised were policy inconsistency and the European Partnership Agreement (EPA) amongst others.” “For us to understand the enormity of our electricity problem, allow me to quote President Muhammadu Buhari in his inaugural speech of May 29, 2015, of the Nigerian economy via-a-vis its power problem. “No single cause can be identified as Nigeria’s poor economic performance over the years than the power situation. It is a national shame that an economy of over 180 million people generates only 4,000 MW and distributes even less. Continuous tinkering with the structure of power supply and distribution has only brought darkness, frustration, misery, and resignation among Nigerians.”

Nigerian economy to be driven by SMEs through franchising
L-R: Mr. Bayo Olugbemi, FCIB, MD, First Registrars and Investors Services Limited; Mr. Bisi Onasanya, FCIB, GMD/CEO, First Bank of Nigeria Limited; Otunba (Mrs.)’Debola Osibogun, FCIB, President/Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN); and Dr. Uche Olowu, FCIB, 2nd Vice President, CIBN, at the CIBN 3rd Valedictory Lecture organised in honour Mr. Onasanya in Lagos recently.
Stories by Charles Okonji Experts have stated that the Nigerian economy could be driven by Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) if they were empowered through franchising. Though, the SMEs are the biggest employers of labour but unfortunately, most hardly survive the first five years of existence due to myriad of reasons. In order to help SMEs survive
and progress, Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions recently organised its first SME and Franchising Nigeria Exhibition and Congress in Nigeria. The director-general of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Alhaji Bature Masari who was represented by the agency’s director of Strategic Enterprise and Liaison, Dr. Friday Okpara, noted that the SMEs play a pivotal role in economic development which goes
beyond job creation, adding that they not only improve living standards but also substantially, local capital formation. Jamie Hill, director, Informa Life Science Group, Africa, stated that the organisation’s aim was to change the face of SMEs in Nigeria by co-locating franchise with SMEs. She said; “The biggest problem here is access to finance. That is why we are co-locating the franchise with the SMEs because the franchise model is a
proven, tested model that works all over the world.” “It is a business plan, so if you go to the bank with a franchise business plan, you will have a lot more possibilities and hope of getting the necessary investment. For an SME, it is very difficult to get access to funds from banks because of the business plans and the way things are done.” She pointed out that the programme was to empower SMEs through education, adding that Informa Life Science Group has partnered with the National Association of Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (NASME) from the private side and SMEDAN from the government side. “We are partnering with them, inviting SMEs, getting their policies and topics involved in the conference. We hope that together, we can really help drive the Nigerian economy through the empowerment of the SMEs,” she said. According to her, we have been working with the Nigerian International Franchise Association, to see who has been making enquiries about getting involved and also they communicate with the embassies like the US, UK and South African Embassy predominantly, to see which global companies are looking into Nigeria at the moment.
Stakeholders call for effective EEG implementation to boost non-oil export Stakeholders have taxed the Federal Government on effective Export Expansion Grant (EEG) to encourage investors in the value chain process to boost the non-oil export sector. Speaking to media at the 2015 ‘money for business conference’ held by Success Edge, recently in Lagos, the managing director of Success Edge International Limited, Mr. Godwin Oyefeso said, the suspension of the EEG scheme by government has generated several criticisms from agro-processors and players in the value-addition sector, describing it as a disincentive and elixir to raw commodities’ exportation. “In assisting exportation of non-oil products, government came up with EEG to give up to about N5 million but was increased to N10 million. It was stopped under the last administration and since then thing has not being operational but basi-
cally the government has EGG that and it is not a loan, it is a grant but the scheme has been stop but we believe with the present administration there is every need for it to be revive and be given to exporters, he said.” According to Oyefeso, with the decline of crude oil price in the international and the government looking for a way to diversify the economy by going into exploit of hydro commodities and solid minerals and as part of our social responsibilities in Success Edge, to sensitizing the public on how to get finance for export trade and other small and medium scale entrepreneur. He lamented on policy inconsistence of the federal government, he said; “The major challenges in the import trade is policy inconsistency, there is no stream-line policy, every government comes up with its policy and this is not a good development for the industry.”
Also, immediate past branch manager, Fidelity Bank, Mr. Wale Badmus said, “In today’s economy, it is believed that growth will come from private enterprises, from businesses, from industrial investing, designing, manufacturing, exporting and expanding frontiers. “Today, commodity exportation is rapidly gathering momentum and positioning as alternate exportation items needed to maintain favorable balance of payment for the Nation.” Commenting on financing options for export growth in Nigeria, Badmus said, there are various finance in assisting the entrepreneurs, personal savings, partnership options with a legally executed memorandum of Understanding (MOU), loans from commercial banks, government loans and grants, microfinance support and suppliers Credit
He also said, there are assistance from government in support of exportation like Export Expansion Grant (EEG), Export Development Funds (EDF), Duty Drawback Suspension, Export Adjustment Funds Scheme and Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM). It will be recalled that the Export Expansion Grant (EEG), a post-shipment export incentive scheme designed to encourage non-oil exporters whose minimum yearly export turnover is N5 million, and also to expand their volume and value of nonoil exports, diversify export markets and make them more competitive in international markets, was established by the Export (Incentives & Miscellaneous Provisions) Act of 1986. As laudable as the scheme appears, there seems to be bottlenecks with its implementation, especially for export of valueadded products.

ENTERPRISE STROKES:
Why you must not hide ideas Siaka Momoh The young man thought he had something unique. He thought he had an exclusive business idea and so wouldn’t want anyone have the very important details. He therefore decided to render a superficial brief on it. What was this idea? It is building with treated wood, processed timber instead of concrete. He was part of one of the groups at the Federal Government’s YouWin selection and training session which held at the Pan African University, Lekki, Lagos. I was part of the group. I took him on and tried to make him see the wisdom in opening up fully. Some other participants in the group did same but he wouldn’t bulge. I then decided to throw it open to the full house at question time. And that did it. His position was torn to shreds by Peter Bamkole, the entrepreneurship training icon and director at EDC (Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan African University). He made him, and others who might be in the same camp with him, know the following basic
points: • A good idea becomes better when you share it with others; • Why? Because there may be a flaw in it that somebody will help you spot and correct; • No idea is exclusive because for every one idea you have there are 10 other people somewhere who have it also, and there are 10 others who are already running with the idea; • Hoarding ideas is primitive. Anyone hoarding ideas is in the mould of our forefathers who hoarded ideas and died with them; if you hoard ideas you will die with them; • If the idea is yours, you will fly with it. Good message, isn’t it? Our young aspiring entrepreneur and many others at the gathering must have been richly enlightened. We are learning - we learn everyday, every moment; since learning is cumulative. For the avoidance of doubt, I dug deep and found out the thinking of some other sources on the subject. Techdirt has a lot to offer. It argues that this is a point that we’ve been making for years (and often highlighting the research that proves this),
but innovation and good ideas tend not to come from the proverbial “spark of genius.” It notes study after study has shown that it is almost never the case. “Almost all good ideas come from people building on the works of others, with a minor tweak here or there, or a random decision based on a suggestion from someone new, after an idea percolates for months or years. The more open systems are to sharing ideas and spreading information and allowing those collisions to happen, the more likely that new good ideas and new innovations occur. That’s why it’s so harmful that today’s intellectual property systems are built on the false assumption that innovation really does happen through that “spark of genius.” It points out that entrepreneur and author Steven Johnson “is about to come out with a new book on this particular topic, Where Good Ideas Come From and has been writing and speaking about some of what’s in the book - which highlights these same points. People have been submitting both his recent TED talk and his recent WSJ
piece that makes these points clear.” What Johnson says: The key thing is to allow those hunches to connect with other people’s hunches. That’s what often happens. You have half of an idea and someone else has the other half, and if you’re in the right environment, they turn into something larger than the sum of their parts (You can see that this aligns with Peter Bamkole’s stand on the subject). So, in a sense, we often talk about the value of protecting intellectual property. You know, building barricades, having secretive R&D labs, patenting everything that we have, so that those ideas will ‘remain valuable’ and people will be incentivised to come up with more ideas. But I think there’s a case to be made that we should spend at least as much time, if not more, valuing the premise of connecting ideas and not just protecting them. (Hear that?) In the WSJ piece, according to Techdirt, he highlights an example of this in action as follows:
Earlier this year, Nike announced a new Web-based marketplace it calls the GreenXchange, where it has publicly released more than 400 of its patents that involve environmentally friendly materials or technologies. The marketplace is a kind of hybrid of commercial self-interest and civic good. This makes it possible for outside firms to improve on those innovations; creating new value that Nike might ultimately be able to put to use itself in its own products. In a sense, Nike is widening the network of minds who are actively thinking about how to make its ideas more useful, without adding any more employees(Note that: widening the network of minds.). But some of its innovations might well turn out to be advantageous to industries or markets in which it has no competitive involvement whatsoever. By keeping its eco-friendly ideas behind a veil of secrecy, Nike was holding back ideas that might, in another context, contribute to a sustainable future-without any real commercial justification.

Costs and benefits of agriculture Danielle Nierenberg Farmers are responsible for much of the world’s land use and associated climate emissions, and are key partners in reducing the environmental impact of human activities. The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) is working to place a value on the invisible environmental services provided by farmers. TEEB for Agriculture and Food (TEEBAgFood) specifically examines the links between ecosystems and food, helping policymakers to understand the true worth of eco-agri-food-systems. According to a study by Dr. Harpinder Sandhu, the economic value of ecosystem services— the benefits that humans derive from nature—could exceed the global costs of pesticides and fertilizers even if adopted on only 10 percent of farmland. And research from Trucost shows that organic farmers obtain significantly higher margins (ranging from US$1750 to US$536 per hectare) compared to conventional farmers (US$1585 to US$2560 per hectare). Trucost is an organization that provides data to business clients to help firms understand their economic dependencies on natural capital. True Cost Accounting (TCA) assigns value to the social, environmental, and health impacts of producing food. Unfortunate-
ly, despite many examples of positive externalities from agriculture, the farming sector as a whole incurs huge environmental, social, and health costs that exceed its global profits. TCA can help to rein in these negative externalities and help eaters, producers, businesses, and policymakers value the environmental and health benefits. An interim report by TEEBAgFood, released December 6, 2015, presents evidence from feeder studies that identify policy options to support more sustainable practices in agriculture. By assessing economic tradeoffs and long-term environmental impacts, these studies have contributed to a better understanding of the most effective incentive mechanisms in the food system. For example, the system of rice intensification (SRI) could cut environmental costs of rice farming in India by 25 percent while simultaneously increasing profits by 18 percent. And in Brazil, holistic grazing management, where cattle are penned in smaller paddocks to allow grassland to recover elsewhere, could reduce environmental costs by 11 percent due to increased carbon sequestration. Other feeder studies have focused on inland fisheries, maize, agroforestry, and palm oil through partnerships with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Trucost,
Gains of Agriculture
and the World Agroforestry Center. “There’s a cost to implicitly valuing the services nature provides at zero, or close to zero, or not factoring in how farming practices impact the land, the people that work it, and communities,” says Alexander Müller, TEEBAgFood study leader. “We’re incorporating the voices
of stakeholders along the entire food chain, from farm to fork, as well as policymakers and those already involved in the movement towards a true cost accounting of food.” Müller reported on the study findings with colleague Pavan Sukhdev, Special Advisor to the report, at GLF Paris, seeking to identify policy and economic drivers
that can influence land use decisions. The Global Alliance for the Future of Food, which is a coalition of foundations facilitating food system change, was one of the key funders for the interim report. “We can’t afford taking a business-as-usual approach any longer,” says Guillermo Castilleja, Chair of the alliance. “How we produce, distribute, and consume food will need to change if we want to address pressing global challenges like climate change, how to feed a growing population, and access to good food for all.” These TCA studies represent a new research focus for many food and agriculture organizations. FAO is also working to account for the full costs of food waste across the globe. Food Tank recently released a new TCA report, “The Real Cost of Food: Examining the Social, Environmental, and Health Impacts of Producing Food.” And the Sustainable Food Trust works to develop solutions to food system problems through leadership and collaboration, communications and citizen engagement, and research and policy. It’s time to support a more ecological paradigm of agricultural intensification, rewarding leaders who act as environmental caretakers and incentivizing other farmers to follow in their footsteps. Danielle Nierenberg, a professional colleague based in the U.S, is President, Food Tank.
NBS adopts Stanbic IBTC’s PMI as govt’s official index Motolani Oseni The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has officially adopted the Stanbic IBTC Nigeria Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) as the Nigerian government’s private sector-based index for the country. The Statistician General of the Federation and Director-General, NBS, Dr. Yemi Kale made revealed this at the official launch of the Stanbic IBTC PMI in Lagos recently. Stanbic IBTC Bank, a member of Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, said it launched the index, compiled by Markit, as part of efforts to ensure a vibrant business environment and that the monthly index will help gauge the health of private sector businesses in the country. The NBS SG commended Stanbic IBTC for again taking the lead in the financial services industry
with the PMI launch. He said his agency is pleased to partner with the bank on the index and assured that it will continue to extend the necessary assistance and support to ensure the PMI is robust. “We looked at the methodology, asked questions and we are extremely happy with the PMI. And to show the extent to which we are happy with it, we have officially adopted the Stanbic IBTC Nigeria PMI as government’s PMI,” Dr Kale said. The index, according to Stanbic IBTC, will reflect figures derived from the survey of the business landscape. The index, among other things, will measure private sector operating status and thereby provide an early indication of business conditions in the country. It is a composite index, calculated as a weighted average of five individual sub-components: New Orders (30%), Output (25%), Em-
ployment (20%), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15%) and Stocks of Purchases (10%). In his address, Chief Executive Officer, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Mr Yinka Sanni, said the availability of data has been an invaluable input for individuals and businesses to weigh in environmental, political, economic, financial and capital market opportunities and issues in taking strategic positions for the future. “Giving the importance of data and acknowledging the good works the National Bureau of Statistics has done over the years to improve collection and dissemination of statistics, Stanbic IBTC looked to identify a need in the space,” Mr Sanni said, adding, “We recognised that Nigeria needs accurate, timely and reliable data by which individuals and corporates can quickly gauge the temperature and momentum of economic activity.” The bank chief said.

Fundamentals of entrepreneurial exploits ‘‘It will be foolishness to go into pub business in a strict religious locality, or to go into aging products in a youthful environment. In business it’s about patronage, it’s about sales, if what you are going into cannot be sold, why produce or go into it.’’ Nwaodu Chukwuemeka You know I laugh when I hear some people in business or those seeking for opportunities or contracts, and even the job seekers, say about their endeavour “we are not in this for the money, that it’s not about the money,” I keep wondering what could be more hypocritical. That people don’t want to face the truth and accept the responsibility it demands to earn it. Well the truth is that to every value created, there is a complimentary or would you say a corresponding compensation attached, and this is what we call money. Money in fact doesn’t exist, what we have are compensations for value creations. The physical notes and coins we have that people refer to as money is only a representative money. In fact if you take a good look at the legal tender note, you will find the central bank of the issuing country promising that the tender is worth the amount on display and would match it if need be. The understanding of this basic concept is the beginning of entrepreneurship that work, the skills in business and life that makes things happen. That if you have something to bring to the table, you earn the power to negotiate its value in compensatory terms. One is not poor or rich because you have-not or have bundles of notes, rather you are poor because you have nothing of value to offer to the market/ people, while the rich with their activities and engagements are offering values of different dimensions. So in spite of your life goals in the area of finances, you must begin to recognise opportunities and gaps to take advantage of in order to attract money, and the magnitude to which you en-
gage this determines where you get to in the ladder of wealth. I tell people the easiest method of getting a job either as a contractor, a consultant or an employee, is to find out what the target organisation is lacking and needs, and offer it in a convenient format and at affordable price, and then you are home and dry on that. The time to go seeking for where there’s an already ideal system to be absorbed is history. Today like in those of Pharaoh: you will have to find your own straw and with no mortar, make your own bricks; mind you, you have to come up with more bricks than ever to be relevant or you are out. That’s the truth of this time and you better come alive to it, the earlier the better. Having built this background shall we take a journey on how to notice opportunities and identify gaps in order to attract money. You know money is called currency, because it flows to wherever there is sufficient display of its welcome, and the way to show that you want to welcome it, is by first understanding what it is and what it takes to be attracted. Having built this foundation and understanding of what money is, shall we therefore move on to how to identify and attract it. Money is numeric and to identify and attract it, you need numerical skills, simple basic understanding of numbers; the import and effects. You need to understand how to map the business or market environment in order to build your business to fit for easy patronage and high turnover. Before getting into any business one must consider the business environment issues, like the political, legal, economic, demographic, cultural and social circumstances relating to the particular business in mind and the locality in consideration. If
all these are properly fitted and harmonised, then you are on your way to success in grand style. Number one consideration is focusing on the numbers having in mind the above business environment issues: a market you desire to exploit must have the right numbers of potential patronage. The demography is a great item to border here for the likely buyers of your product; a demography of youths will go for youth oriented products or services, same goes for life style, culture, religion and social status. You must also consider the legal details and allowances of the locality, as well as the political state to know what products to go into, at what standards, packaging, ambiance, and etcetera. It will be foolishness to go into pub business in a strict religious locality, or to go into aging products in a youthful environment. In business it’s about patronage, it’s about sales, if what you are going into cannot be sold, why produce or go into it. Getting into business or making a product just because of passion without foreseeable patronage, is like engaging in masturbation; because business is a two way thing, offering value and being compensated in monetary terms. If you haven’t determined where the value will be offered, there may not be anybody to compensate you, and that’s not business. Exploiting the advantages of economies of scale is another element we must take note of if our goal is to make it big in business. No business will ever be real big operating from one spot; it can never get big looking small. So multiple networks of outlets. is a must do, for two reasons; one is to spread the reach to the customers and aggregate them by multiple process, if one shop can serve and reach five thousand custom-
Enelamah, Minister Trade and Investment
ers, then twenty of those shops would reach a hundred thousand. So if you were making say fifty thousand Naira with a shop, the twenty outlets will give you one million Naira a day turnover. The second reason for multiple outlets is the beauty of this concept, in that you not only make multiplied money, your cost reduces with the concept, because with buying more you end up spending less (which is a truism in business operations). Economies of scale enables you to buy whatever in large quantities at a lower unit cost, and since you have a wider network of disposal (business outlets), you will be making more marginal returns than your competitors, and can even engage them in a price war to out stage them, or may even sale same price for higher quality products. The laxity this concept offers is unimaginable and is the secret of every big business the world over. People would be designing businesses or products and topmost on their mind would be how much money they would be making and may be how to expand the scope, remember we started by saying that money is currency attracted by how much opportunities and gaps you have noticed and seized by offering values. So don’t start by targeting how much to make but how much value your products can add to the end users; any other considerations on this won’t go far, sustainable businesses and products survive by the power of the value they add to the customers. Remember customers don’t want to buy what you have or make, they want to buy what they need, want and desire. Pricing can make or mar your business, the customer is very
sensitive when it comes to this, especially with the present economic state, his elasticity on this is high, and a little thing on the pricing can trigger decision ether positive or otherwise. So the marketing mix must be right allowing sales to come up with the most affordable pricing for that most valuable product. The key is never allow your competition to beat you in price or on value. There are several segments of the market, your products must align to these and be tailored to appeal to the desired target. For instance at the lower end of the market and the retail segment, what they desire are affordability and quantity so much that a price difference of ten Naira will command a great deal of shift in buying behaviour, while at the upper end of the market, it’s convenience, quality, personal touch, ambiance and ease that’s key. Any business that wants to succeed must be mindful of these; I keep wondering why there are mini packs for beverages and no budget airliner in Nigeria. The consumer behaviour in the market desires freebies, a lot of giveaways and some kind of lotteries, anything to increase the quantity or reduce the price of that product are what the consumers are gunning for, and the reasons are not far –fetched. The state of the economy has pushed several people to the lower end of the social/economic class. So when packaging your products have this in mind, that if you desire high turnover then the mass market is it for you and with it, the key is affordability and quantity. Guaranteeing these whichever strategy you choose to adopt will ensure your success.

Leaving indelible footprints in Lagos politics
Interview L2
Daily Times Nigeria Friday, December 11 , 2015
I started politics at a tender age — Braimoh,
socialite, politician Barrister Tunde Braimoh, a renowned socialite has a lot of experience in Lagos State politics. The member, of State House of Assembly representing Kosofe was formerly the Chairman of Kosofe Local Government. In this interview, the soft-spoken man of many parts spoke on issues affecting Lagos and President Muhammadu Buhari.
Life&
T E A M
After so many years, you are back in elective position as House of Assembly member, how has it been? It’s all good but there has been no time I was away from my people. Even all the time I wasn’t in elective position, I have always made myself available for their well being; that has been part of me. Just that it will be much more now like when I was Executive Chairman of Kosofe LG. So, I have been part of the system; that is why it has been much easier to relate and get along well with my colleagues at the State Assembly. How was the election in terms of the processes and other contestants? It was challenging not because of something serious but you don’t take people for granted. I knew it was going to be a matter of competition, people are more aware of what is going on; so it’s your personality that they know very well that will make them give you their votes and not by inducement anymore. I was only surprised that some people were trying to play tribal sentiment to get votes. All along, we are not used to that in Lagos especially for me, and in my area, we all live like one; so this kind of dirty politics played out which wasn’t good for the unity of the country. What would you say about the relationship between the executive and the legislature at the moment? It’s been very cordial, not like a rubber-stamp House, but the governor has been very proactive to anything we call his attention to. He is not like a governor who will say
what’s the business of the House with one issue or the other, we have called His Excellency’s attention to something in terms of oversight and his response has been very prompt. You will see the attitude of somebody that is ready for the job, he has been part of the system for long. We are co-operating very well; for example, we never knew the Judicial Service Commission has re-appointed commissioner for the agency without clearance from the Assembly. When we got wind of this, we had to write to the governor who immediately ordered the dissolution and the appropriate thing should be done, that is how it should be. With the kind of governor we have, I don’t foresee any problem at all because he’s a democrat to the core. The issues of waterways, armed robbery and so on which we have all talked about, he has been active on all since he came in. He even sent a letter of commendation to us that most of the issues we discussed here are so helpful to him. The House comprises of two major parties, PDP and APC, how has it been in terms of cooperation? So far so good, we have been working together and we have been friends irrespective of party affiliations; if they continue like this, there won’t be any issues. How true is the fact that some of your party members who are your colleagues travelled overseas with their wives while PDP members were left out? That is not true, I am an APC member and I am here in Nigeria, if people have travelled with their
Movie & Music Correspondent Mutiat Alli
wives; it must be from their personal pocket. Nobody should worry himself about that, I am aware some people travelled but not aware of their wives’ trip. What are your plans for the people of your constituency? What some people do in open field, calling press conferences; some of these promote corruption. You don’t need to be cosmetic about empowering people with propaganda. People need solid footprint that will give them lasting hope. These are areas I will concentrate more on; not that I won’t support in terms of empowerment. If you are a legislator and you have the wherewithal to buy some of these things for genuine people who need welding machines, sewing machines and all those equipment used for small scale business, it is a good idea but why should you call a world Press conference for that? People spend more on publication than what they even give to their constituents. My covenant with my people is that, whatever is entitled to them from the coffers of the state, they will surely get. Just like now that the governor wants to establish wealth creation programmes. What’s your view on President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode so far? The President has been very fantastic so far, he has been putting frameworks in place by trying to reorganize the decayed system. President Buhari did not promise magic performance, he never said he will turn water to wine, go and listen to what the President said when he was

By the time he finishes with all that, the result will be so amazing for everybody to see. You can see the barrels of crude oil they have been stealing before; all these leakages have been blocked. Soon, we will start seeing results of all these blocked leakages; so many
waivers that were granted illegally in Customs will be open with the new person at the helms of affairs. The President has also volunteered to head the Petroleum Ministry, we can all imagine what will come out of that, we all remember what he did as PTF boss. This is a man that will not steal your money, despite all the positions he has held, look at the paltry assets that he has, yet some people are still questioning that. Go and check out what many people have as assets and compare it to that; Buhari is not God, for anybody that has worked in all his capacities to have such as-

sets in this country where corruption was institutionalised, we must commend him, he is the kind of person Nigeria needs. We must be honest; already, we have seen how much we have in our foreign reserve, we learnt it has gone up. If the president of a country shows you that he is not corrupt, the followers or appointees must be careful because if you dare steal, you will blame yourself. We need iron hand in Nigeria as far as it’s within the law. For Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, he knows where the shoe pinches, he has been in the system, he has started on a good

footing, now we are restructuring the civil service in the state, the Wealth Creation Ministry will be on, he has been strengthening all the sectors, healthcare services, road construction, security. Like I said earlier, he has been pro-active, he concentrates on crime prevention, you can see the actions he took recently on LASTMA, the agency is being sanitised and restructured so that they can serve the masses well without rancour. When the agency is sanitised now, it’s only the habitual law breaker that will suffer for it. My appeal to people in Lagos is to give him the support and cooperation he needs. With the way he started, he will succeed, he is not a propagandist. What kind of Lagos State do you want to see after four years? I want to see a more secured state, a freer state in terms of traffic because that causes a lot of untimely deaths. As we have seen, the governor is working towards that; a state where we can all be proud of regardless of party affiliation. I have my covenant with my people, they will not be short-changed, I will serve them with my heart as it concerns legislating. I am open to all of them. Basically, we want people to enjoy life better than what we are witnessing and I am sure APC will do it. Let’s talk about growing up? Yeah growing up was fun, it was exciting and interesting. You won’t believe that I have always love politics, I mean as early as my primary school days and I have always been active. It even contributed to my peculiar brilliance because I was always the class captain of my class. When I got to secondary school, my brilliance dropped because I lost some years in the early ages to some sicknesses, so I didn’t finish when I ought to and it affected me. I didn’t even read Primary six, I didn’t even do well in my early stages of secondary school, so I lost the leadership though still active in other areas. I lost captainship in my class but not in my hostel, so these things were always there. People look at me for decisions on critical matters at that stage. So, it materialised clearly when I got to my HSC. I attended the College of Art and Science in the then defunct Oyo State now Osun State. That was when my leadership status was clearly defined, I didn’t run for any election per se. I also attended Ogun State University. In other words Politics has always been part of you?
Yes, I have been in it since then and I remember nominating people for various posts including the post of the hostel chairman, I have always prefer to champion while somebody else would be there. I was observing and evaluating issues. So how do you find time to relax? Well it’s not easy but we are coping. What is your philosophy about death? From the earth we came from there we shall return. When my time comes nobody can stop it. I don’t believe anybody can kill me with all that I have seen but I believe that when the time comes even if I don’t go out, if I am to die inside I will die, no person gave me my life, no person can take it except the Almighty Allah and I believe death must come, we only tend to forget. When you see people who are lucky to have been advanced in age forgetting that they would die, but I don’t forget. What do you like most about being a politician? What I like most about being a politician is the opportunity to be involved. Because it’s a privilege. When we are talking about Lagos State, we say we have about 21 million people, estimate. If you have 40 people representing these people in the House of Assembly for example, 24 people representing them in the House of Representatives, about 40 commissioners, the Governor and the deputy. All these people are not more than 70 people. So, if one is privileged to be one of those 70 or let’s say 100 people, I think it’s a rare privilege. You can affect people positively through public office. As a lawyer, I’ve been able to affect people; as a businessman, I’ve been able to affect people. To employ and apply the common wealth is easier and it’s better and it’s more appreciated by the people. Finally what would you want to be remembered for? Somebody that came, that lived a life. Living a life is very important. To me, when you are alive, you must live by example, you must be a model and people must be able to watch you. I thank God that by and large, I have been able to achieve that. My birthdays are never planned, but people who believe in me celebrate my birthdays including the high and mighty. I feel so humbled and honoured, I thank God that even on earth, I am being remembered.

Society Gists L6 Isaac Oguntoye If there is anything that stands Senator Ben Bruce amidst other senators since his election as senator, it will definitely be his act of giving. When other senators were agitating for wardrobe allowances, the fair in complexion senator volunteered to donate his wardrobe allowance to the less-privilege. Penultimate Sunday, he emphasized the need for leaders to make sacrifices for their followers. This was while fulfilling his pledge to donate half of his wardrobe allowance to widows in his community at Akasa, Bayelsa State. Among those that benefited from this included widows, youths and other less privileged within his community. Bruce is a Nigerian business magnate, politician and founder of Silverbird Group. A member of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), he was elected into the 8th Senate in March 2015, and currently represents Bayelsa East Senatorial District.

speaks on multi-billion Naira city of Wonders “I am still in the primary school of my assignment” Shepherd in Charge of Champions Royal Assembly, Bro. Joshua Iginla, has finally broken the silence on the record 80,000 sitting capacity auditorium known as City of Wonders that he is building in Kubwa, Abuja. He opened up on the cathedral that has stirred up a lot of envy in Christendom during the 9th anniversary of the ministry on Sunday, December 6, 2015 inside the city of Wonders. He admitted that the building is indeed a 80,000 seater and that the design was by a Nigerian under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. “I got the revelation about the city of wonders in 1996. The whole building as it is now is just 13 months. A lot of people asked if it’s indeed a 80,000 seater, and i can tell them that indeed, it is, but you can’t describe it until you visit the place. Let me shock you more. This is not the promised land God is taking me to. The city of Wonder is just my primary school in the journey of my ministry. By Gods grace, we never borrowed a dime nor sought support from anybody. After the cross over night on December 31, 2015, it will become our permanent place of worship”. The multi-billion naira project is already roofed and only a visit

City of Wonders sited at Chikakore, Kubwa, Abuja is arguably a record breaking 800,000 capacity auditorium which is arguably the biggest in the world when completed. It sits atop hectares of land with 350 toilets and four floors. The world class ultra modern auditorium has 12 escalators, nine electronically operated elevators and three hectares of car park. It was glamour and glitz as Bro. Joshua led Champions Royal Assembly in their 9th anniversary in a powerful way. Popular gospel artistries, Chioma Jesus, Solomon Lange and Steve Crown added colour to the glorious service as they led worshippers to the throne of grace through the rendition of their hit songs. Steve Crown’s track, “You are Great” stirred the congregation to the mood of worship while Solomon Lange’s popular song, yabo raised the Tempo to high heavens. Miraculously, a baby girl was delivered by a female worshipper within five minutes power ministration by Bro. Joshua. Being the first miracle baby at the city of Wonders, Bro. Iginla named her Esther immediately and declared a scholarship up to university for the new baby girl.
Titi and Wasiu made it his duty to make sure he cooked the family meal every weekend if situation permits. It was gathered that, the rumour was concocted out of the fact that, the ‘Olu Aye’ of Fuji music is always on one musical tour or the other but the marriage is not troubled in anyway.

Sen. Buruji Kashamu smiles again Not many top politicians survive half of what Kashamu had survived in recent times. Before now, it was the case of being wanted in the United States of America over drug related issues. While he was trying to clear his image, his election was nullified at the tribunal. The moneybag socialite-cum politician challenged the judgment of the tribunal delivered in Abeokuta
by Justice Tobi Ebiowel which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election in 110 polling units in the district. But the Court of Appeal chaired by Justice A.G. Mshelia nullified the judgment of the tribunal and declared Kashamu winner of the election. Now, Sen. Kashamu can sleep with his two eyes close.
