Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial Alarm over typhoid resistant drugs
R
ecently, researchers at Welcome Trust, a British nonprofit organisation raised alarm at the increasing antibiotic-resistant typhoid across Africa and Asia, which is currently posing a major global health threat. The researchers, who have been tracking the hard-to-treat infection, say it is replacing regular typhoid in many countries. Following analysed bacterial samples from 63 countries, it was discovered that nearly half were impervious to standard antibiotic treatments, which was blamed on over-reliance on those drugs. The body observed that in many parts of Asia and Africa, a multidrug-resistant strain called H58 has displaced other typhoid strains, which have been around for centuries. They therefore called on the international community to act immediately to protect a third of the world population against the risk of contracting typhoid. It would be recalled that typhoid is caused by the highly contagious bacterium Salmonella typhi, which can spread from person to person by food and water that is contaminated with traces of infected faeces or urine. Typically, the illness is characterised by very high fever, sweating, diarrhea, malaise, diffuse abdominal pain and constipation. Its protean manifestations make the disease a true diagnostic challenge. If untreated, it becomes a gruelling illness that may progress to delirium, intestinal hemorrhage, bowel perforation, and death within one month of onset. Even at that, survivors may be left with long-term or permanent neuropsychiatry complications. Statistics reveal that more than 21 million cases of typhoid fever and five
million cases of paratyphoid ‘A’ fever are reported worldwide every year, especially in many Third World countries where the lack of appropriate sanitation and access to clean water are common. Even with advances in technology and public health strategies, typhoid fever remain a major cause of morbidity in the developing world. In many of these countries, the illness disproportionately affects young children and may reflect high rates of transmission through food and water. In addition, the availability of diagnostic tests that are rapid, sensitive, specific, simple to perform and cost effective to detect for the pathogen in contaminated food, water and healthy human carriers, would provide an effective tool in controlling and preventing typhoid. According African Health Journalists Association (AHJA), typhoid has put over 95 percent of Nigerians at risk of ill health, representing over 160 million people in the country. We are therefore calling on the country’s health authorities to take urgent steps in identifying ways of curbing the spread of the new drug resistant typhoid among the population. This they should do through public education campaigns to encourage people to wash their hands after defecating and before handling food. Moreover, people should be advised to drink properly treated water and desist from buying all manner of sachet water being sold by roadside vendors. In addition, limiting the inappropriate use of antibiotics will be part of the solution, while surveillance, systems to identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria should be improved to identify hotspots and intensify prevention and control measures.

Irritating boast of a party chairman Sam Nzeh
ÏÏÏSince
it lost the 2015 general election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears set on the path to selfdestruction with top officials openly castigating other members while absolving themselves of blames about the party’s loss. Rather than seek peace, some of these high ranking officials are busy stoking crises in the party through unguarded statements. One of such statements that can best be described as irritating was made by no less a person than the PDP national chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, on Sunday, wherein
he boasted that the PDP will be buried if he resigns. Apparently daring party members calling for his head, having led the party to its worst electoral defeat since 1999, Mu’azu, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Tony Amadi, insisted that that he would not resign despite the threat of some members to form a faction of the party and boasted that the party would be buried if he succumbed to calls that he resign. Such boast coming from Mu’azu, who in saner climes would have since thrown in the towel as party chair, is not only irritating but also arrogance taken too far. It is uncalled for. Mu’azu cannot as leader of the party make statements that instead of healing the wounds inflicted

on the party by the crushing defeat it suffered in the last elections, exacerbate it. What gives Mu’azu the impression that the PDP will die if he quits his position? Is he the first to be the PDP national chairman? Fact is that Mu’azu is not the first national chairman of PDP and he won’t be the last. If others before him left office, his cannot be different. In fact, it is a virtue for a leader to know when to quit and not to allow his continued stay in office tear his organisation apart. So, those who are close to the PDP national chairman should remind him that he does not have the luxury to talk down on members from his ‘Olympian heights,’ and that such display of arrogance is the least PDP requires now.

Nigerian may be UK’s first black Premier ÏÏÏWhile politics in his father-
land is still locked in primordial sentiments, Nigeria’s Chuka Umunna is set to be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He threw his hat into the political ring on Tuesday to be the second aspirant to the office, becoming the second member of the party to offer to lead it after suffering crushing defeat in last Thursday’s parliamentary elections. The son of Benneth, an importer-exporter now deceased, is Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary. His father had married Patricia Milmo, a solicitor and daughter of a British judge, Sir Helenus Milmo QC, who was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials. Umunna, 36, announced his bid to become Labour leader in a video released on Facebook on Tuesday morning. His father died in a road crash in Nigeria in 1992 when he was just 14. The 36-year-old MP for Streatham in south London wasreported to have received endorsement from for British Prime Minister Tony Blair sometime late last year. He is the second Labour MP to join the race to replace Ed Miliband, after Blairite shadow health minister Liz Kendall an-
nounced her bid on Sunday. But the pair are likely to be joined by at least three more candidates, including Yvette Cooper who will launch her bid as early as Thursday - and the shadow health secretary Andy Burnham. In the video, Umunna, who worked as a lawyer in London before entering Parliament, claimed he wanted to ‘lead the effort’ to get Labour back into power in 2020 dismissing claims it would take the party another 10 years to win back power. It comes after a string of senior Labour figures, including Lord Mandelson and former chancellor Alistair Darling, ripped into the party’s disastrous campaign. Labour slumped to its worst defeat in almost 30 years in last week’s election – finishing 99 seats behind the Conservatives, with 26 fewer MPs than even Gordon Brown managed in 2010. Speaking in Swindon, a key marginal where Labour failed to make any inroads at the election, Umunna insisted he could lead the party back to power within five years. Umunna said: I’m pleased today to be announcing that I will be standing for the leadership of the party. ‘I think we can be winning in
seats like Swindon. North, South, East, and West we can absolutely do it as a party. ‘Some have suggested in the last few days that this is somehow now a 10 year project to get the Labour party back into office. I don’t think we can have any truck with that at all. ‘I think the Labour party can do it in five years. I want to lead that effort as part of a really big Labour team, getting Labour back into office, building a fairer, more equal society - that’s why we all joined the party in the first place.’ Umunna has enjoyed a rapid rise since being elected to Parliament five years ago, aged just 31. The sharp-suited former lawyer was promoted to shadow business secretary within two years of winning his Commons seat – and quickly became one of Labour’s most high-profile figures. Before entering Parliament, Mr Umunna studied law at Manchester University before moving into a job at the top City law firm Herbert Smith. Despite being in his 20s, he was already earning enough to buy a £230,000 flat in a converted art deco cinema on Streatham High Road – in the heart of his future constituency.
UK slavery suit: Complainant misleading court, says counsel Ngozi Okafor London
ÏÏÏSome
drama took place on Tuesday at the ongoing trial of a Nigerian, Ofonime Sunday Inuk, accusing a couple of holding him in servitude for over 24 years in the United Kingdom . At the resumption of the trial at Harrow Crown court, Mrs Edet’s lawyer, Emma Akuwudike, told the court that the 39-year-old, never knew how to cook when he became a member of their family. Mrs Edet, according to her lawyer, not only did her cooking in bulk, she actually cooked Nigerian dishes for Inuk and other family members. Akuwudike added that Inuk was given as much liberty as he wanted in the house and even had a room to himself at all their addresses, contrary to his claims. Not only did he love watching sports, news and current affairs, he
loved watching Oprah Winfrey and other talk shows. These, Mrs Edet’s lawyer said, were contrary to his claims to the police that he was not allowed to watch television, except the couple or their children were with him. Inuk, the court was also told, enjoyed documentaries, especially on the royal family, such that it was he who told his adoptive mother, senior nursing sister, Mrs Edet, 58, much about the royal family. Inuk also claimed the Edets made him wash clothes with his bare hands, instead of using washing machine, despite the family living in furnished doctors’ apartments at some of their addresses. Continuing with her cross examining throughout the morning session, Akuwudike --- and sometimes, the judge --- asked Inuk a series of questions, but some of his answers contradicted what he had told the police in written statements. Asked why he threw away some
of his pages of the ‘diary’ that detailed the maltreatment he suffered, Inuk said it was to move away from that era. Also told that contrary to his claims of being made to work all day, it was Mrs Edet who did the bulk of the cooking and even taught him to cook, he countered that he knew how to boil rice. When Judge Arran asked, “How often did you keep a diary?” Inuk went quiet. When the lawyer took over and asked the 39-year-old for an explanation of the big gaps in years between the diary entries he made. He replied, “I just threw them away.” The trial continues at courtroom 1 all week. A Nigeria-based witness, Christopher Ekong, 42, is to resume giving evidence today. Before the court rose on Tuesday, Ekong told the trial that Inuk complained about suffering too much, when he and another guest visited him in the Edets house in 2004.

Constitution: Senators’ move to override Jonathan suffers setback Sunday Isuwa Abuja
ÏÏÏThe
Senate on Tuesday, failed to override President Goodluck Jonathan, who recently vetoed the amendments the National Assembly made on the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Senate had initiated moves to override the President’s veto by listing the Constitution alteration Bill on the Senate order paper of Tuesday for first reading, which
is the first legislative process in the step towards overriding the President’s veto in the presidential democracy being practiced in the country. However, for reasons unknown, the move was quickly suspended to another legislative date, as was unanimously agreed to by the lawmakers, even though the date was not specified. Recall that the President had earlier vetoed the Constitution amendment Bill passed by the lawmakers, on the grounds that
there were clear constitutional breaches in the process, including that the lawmakers failed to make up the fourth-fifth constitutional requirements to carry out the amendments. In this regards, the President asked the National Assembly to prove to him that they have been able to meet this constitutional requirements in carrying out the amendments, failure of which he has no option than to withhold his assent. The Senate first responded
by asking the President to send back to the parliament the original copy of the Bill that was sent to him for assent, especially the signature page, where all the lawmakers signed. This was the beginning of the process of overriding the President, as the lawmakers were reported to have gathered the majority they needed to override the President’s veto. But in retaliation, the President took the National Assembly to the court, where he obtained an in-
junction barring the lawmakers from taking any further action on the Bill, pending when the issue has been determined by the court. However, the Senate responded by pointing out that the court cannot stop the Senate from carrying out its constitutional mandate. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the spokesman of the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe, said there was a distinct separation of powers, pointing out that every arm of government has powers to discharge its functions to the people.
Seven doctors get kidnap threat in Ekiti ÏÏÏPalpable fear has enveloped medical and health workers in Ekiti State following the threat of kidnap messages sent to no fewer than seven medical doctors on Tuesday. The Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the state, Dr. John Akinbote, said that seven of his members got the threat text messages.
The messages had heightened the fear of insecurity of lives of the health workers following spate of attacks and kidnap of their members and families in recent times. A nurse with Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Mrs. Margaret Aladenika, was kidnapped on May 3 while her husband was beaten up by the assailants while
a former Chief Medical Director of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Dr. Patrick Adegun, and his wife, Kikelomo, were kidnapped on May 7. However, following the spate of threat, the Academic Union of Universities (ASUU), on Tuesday appealed for the unconditional release of Dr. and Mrs. Adegun, Aladenika and a lecturer at Oba-
femi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Dr. Olufemi Omisore, who was kidnapped on his way to Oye Ekiti, enroute Ido Ekiti on May 8. ASUU spoke on Tuesday at a joint press conference in Ado Ekiti, addressed by its Akure and Ibadan zones, calling for the overhaul of the security agencies in the state including the police and the State Security Services (SSS
over their inability to curb the wave of kidnappings. Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), ASUU Chairman, Dr. Bola Oniya, who delivered the statement on behalf of the ASUU Akure Zone, appealed to Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, to “do all things possible to get rid of these hoodlums on our lands.

OBJ, Buhari attend Council of State meeting Continued from page 4 different category. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki and the Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Arogbofa also attended the meeting. That would also be their last time. The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere with the leaders exchanging banters and even took photographs at the end of the meeting. Opening Christian and Muslim prayers were said by the outgoing governors of Cross Rivers and Kaduna respectively, Liyel Imoke and Ramalan Yero. Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon set the tone for the camaraderie that took place when
he moved a motion for the appreciation of the good works of outgoing President Jonathan and his concession of defeat in the elections even when the result was yet to be announced. At the meeting, the council ratified the transition timetable for the handing over of government by President Jonathan to the incoming administration of General Buhari. The council also approved the proposal by the transition committee to separate the inauguration ceremony from the handing over of official documents to the incoming administration. Consequently, President Jonathan will submit his handover notes to General Buhari on the 28 of May ahead of the official inauguaration of the new government on May 29.
Governors Babangida Aliyu and Gabriel Suswam of Niger and Benue states respectively who briefed State House correspondents on the resolutions of the meeting said the separation of the two events beginning from the upcoming handover would establish a template to be followed in future transitions regardless of the party that wins elections. This suggestion when it was first muted by the Federal Executive Council that Jonathan would present the handover notes to Buhari on May 28 generated controversy with the All Progressives Congress (APC) rejecting it. According to Aliyu: “Officially, the government will be handed over on the 28th of May, the inauguration on the 29th. It is only a technicality. One is inauguration, the formality of the new president

NDIC moves to recover N34m debt from Okupe ÏÏÏThe Nigerian Deposit Insur-
ance Corporation has asked a Federal High Court in Lagos to place on the “undefended list” a suit it filed to recover an alleged debt of N34 million from the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, and two others. Okupe’s co-respondents in the suit filed by the NDIC before Justice Saliu Saidu are Value Trust Investment Limited and its Director, Mr. Ray Ahazie. The NDIC had instituted the action to recover the alleged debt, being the outstanding of a loan facility obtained by the respondents from Gulf Bank Plc in October 2,000.
In a statement of claim by NDIC’s lawyer, Dr. Abiodun Layonu (SAN), the corporation said the respondents obtained the loan from the bank to facilitate a contract to supply the Bayelsa State Government with 10,000 metric tons of imported rice. NDIC, however, stated that though the said rice was successfully imported into the country on December 28, 2000, the ship was unable to berth at the Apapa Port in Lagos until January 3, 2001 because the port was congested. The corporation stated further that when the ship arrived at Port Harcourt on July 26, 2001, an unpaid agency fee in the sum of $155,000 prevented it from berthing.
According to the NDIC, the said delay in the delivery of the rice bags led to some becoming caked and some becoming stained. Bayelsa State Government was said to have refused to take delivery of the rice, following which Gulf Bank was forced to commence an open market sale of the goods and in the process, discovered that a good number of the rice bags were spoilt. The bank said at the end of the sale, it was able to recoup only N454, 574, 150 of the loan advanced to the defendants, leaving an outstanding sum of N70, 425, 850. The outstanding sum was said to have been attracting interest since 2001.
taking over. Technically, the 29th is for the man taking over. “For handing over documents you don’t wait till that 29th because after the inauguration the transition committee may continue. “If you recall, when President Jonathan came on board, he inaugurated the Gen. Danjuma’s committee to look at all the documents that were handed over to them and make recommendations. So it’s a continuous thing”, he said. Suswam also added: “just to add that the council decided that henceforth there has to be a template in which transition will follow. “We have never had it. This is the first time one is going to be developed, so that there is no speculation as to what needs to be done as everything will be in a template. If there is a transition whether is from the same party to the same party or from one party to another, it is the same template. “You will recall that we have never had a template in which to follow and how we go about our transition but what is going to happen this time around is going to be permanent”, he stressed. The handing over programme, according to Aliyu, will commence on May 22nd with Juma’at prayer and will be followed with church service on the 24th, while 28th will be the handing over as well as dinner and 29th inauguration, luncheon and gala night. “On the 28th, President Jona-
than will conduct Gen. Buhari and the Vice President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo round the Villa,” Governor Suswam added. Besides, he also disclosed that security issues especially on the insurgency and the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in parts of the country were discussed by council. According to him, the National Security Adviser, Col. Dasuki Sambo who briefed council on security issues expressed optimism that the country was finally getting it right in the fight against insurgents. Aliyu also disclosed that at the meeting General Gowon, moved a motion in appreciation of President Jonathan’s good works especially his concession of defeat adding that an atmosphere of camaraderie pervaded the council despite seeming political differences among members, pointing out that what the council members exhibited was the ideal thing to do. His words: “Politics is not war. Yes, there is a prize but the moment there is a decision and someone gets the prize, everyone should come back and wait for another chance. So the camaraderie that you noticed, that is how it should be and we should send it down to our communities, to our people. So that even in one house, you can afford to vote for different parties but the moment results are announced you will remain brothers and not enemies. So you can tell that to the public”.

of former Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ahmadu Alli, Mamman Alli, was on Tuesday, re-arraigned before a High Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over alleged N4.5bn fuel subsidy fraud. He was arraigned alongside other persons and their oil marketing firm on an amended 49 counts of fuel subsidy scam.
Ali was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alongside his two alleged accomplices – Christian Taylor and Nasaman Oil Services Limited, an oil marketing firm. The trio were dragged before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo, on the allegation that they fraudulently obtained N4.5bn as fuel subsidy claim from the Federal Government on a purported importation of 30.5 million litres of premium motor spirit (petrol). The re-arraignment of Ali
and the two others followed the ‘disappearance’ of one Oluwaseun Ogunbambo, with whom they were first arraigned by the anti-graft commission on July 26, 2012. Ogunbambo had reportedly fled the country after he was granted bail. In 2012, the four accused persons were charged with nine counts. The counts bordered on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and use of false documents. The EFCC’s prosecutor, Seidu
Atteh, informed the court, on Tuesday, of the amended charges, and sought court’s permission to take the plea of the three accused persons. Subsequently, Justice Onigbanjo granted the prayer. But upon reading the charges to the accused persons, they all pleaded not guilty to all the counts. Atteh told the court that having freshly arraigned the accused before the court, the antigraft commission was ready to open its trial.

Violence is unacceptable – Saraki
Kehinde Akinpelu Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and ecology, Dr Bukola Saraki, has condemned the recent civil disturbance that rocked some parts of Ilorin, Kwara State, capital. He described violence in whatever guise as totally unacceptable to both the government and people of the state. Saraki who had last week donated N3.2 million to the victims of the mayhem spoke with newsmen in Ilorin after visiting the victims at Agbarere, Idi-Ape and Ita-Ajia areas of the metropolis. The former governor of the state who described thugery as alien to the state said that the issue of unemployment could not be an excuse for violent crime. He said violence was strange to Kwara while parents, community leaders and religious leaders have key role to play in sustaining peace in their domains, adding: “we must never
go back to those dark days again”. Saraki, who commended the state government for steps taken in stemming the ugly scene, assured that he would support any measure that would restore peace and sanity in the state. “The state government must be commended for the swift action they have taken because since I arrived yesterday (Saturday) I noticed calmness and peace being restored after some level of damages on houses. We are very much hopeful that such a thing will not re-occur. “And I think on the basis of that, whatever needs to be done, whether it is law or executive action, I’m sure the state would do that. We would support anything that would ensure the sustainability of this level of peace and sanity in our state. “I believe the level of violence is totally unacceptable in any society. How PDP can return to power in 2019, by Ekweremadu Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Post Election Review Committee has revealed how the party would reposition itself to return to power in 2019. He told newsmen in an interview in Abuja: “We are now ready to rebuild our party and be able to present a credible opposition for this country that will ensure us return to power in 2019. “We are ready to hold the new government accountable and make sure that the promises they have made, which we will benchmark appropriately, will not be that they have deceived Nigerians and got their votes. “They are going to account for their statements, their promises. We will hold them accountable to all the promises,’’ Ekweremadu said. According to him, the PDP has already absorbed the shock of its losses in the general elections as well as gotten over the infighting and blame game the election generated. “When you have this kind of situation, the first reaction will be blame game, but I think we have been able to absorb that shock and right now I can assure you that all that bickering has stopped,’’ he said. “And we also agreed that all bickering have to stop so that we can have a position that will enable us to rebuild our party,’’ he added. The PDP leadership has since the last polls been embroiled in a crisis of confidence following its huge loss during the March 28 CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

have chosen,” the former Head of State said. The president-elect explained also, that the only way his administration can enjoy relative peace, security, job creation and put infrastructural facilities in place, is to give the power sector serious attention. Sule, who spoke on behalf of the group, appealed to him to exhibit fairness in the treatment of everyone irrespective of tribe, colour or religion, as that is the only way he would be able to lead the country according to his plans. “Sir, it is easy; I know it was easy when you were a military leader and what made it easy was justice. “With justice, you can rule Nigeria well. Justice is the key; irrespective of tribe, religion and race, justice must be done to whosoever deserves it. Power can remain in the hands of an infidel if he is just and fair but it will not remain in the hands of a believer if he is unfair and unjust,” he said.
Sule also said injustice was the fundamental cause of crisis all over the world and that the only solution to avert crisis was justice. “The world itself can never be governed by force or by fear nor by power; in the end, what governs is the mind, what conquers is the spirit and what governs the mind and spirit are justice and fair play. I have always known you to be a man of justice and I ask you to please continue, don’t change or compromise justice for anything. Mr. President-elect sir, we know what we have gone through. “I will ask you not to discriminate against any part of Nigeria but I’ll urge you to do justice to all part of Nigeria, justice that will bring about peace and stability, that will lead to the development of Nigeria. I know you believe that one day you will stand before God to give account of everything you have done here on earth. I will rather prefer that you disappoint me than to disappoint God, your creator,” he stated.
Agoro carpets NASS over Supreme Court judgment National Chairman/former Presidential Candidate, of the National Action Council (NAC) Dr. Olapade Agoro has carpeted the National Assembly for flaying the Supreme Court judgment halting their amendment of the 1999 Constitution. In a statement, he described comments by Leo Ogor, House Majority Leader and Chairman Senate Committee on Information, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe as absurd. Ogor and Abaribe had on Sunday May 10 insisted that “the Supreme Court can’t stop the National Assembly from further amending the 1999 Constitution”. This was in a reaction to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling directing both the Federal Government and the National Assembly to maintain the Status Quo on the suit brought by the federal government. The NASS action, Agoro said must be seen as a direct a direct assault not only on the rule of law but on the commonality of wisdom and good reasoning. He said they must be informed and educated on the fact that the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria is the most superior
law and legal authority stipulating the core values of the existence of the nation, institutions and peoples; offering its superior interpretative meanings, importations, implications and correlative enforcements to the law courts of the federation. According to him, the judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction and authority must be respected by all parties to an action until challenged before a superior court and possibly set aside. “Incidentally in this instant matter, the Supreme Court’s decision that “the parties must maintain STATUS QUO” is just about the final decision on the matter with no further access to appeal than could one day, somehow be offered by the Supreme Court itself. Until then the road is closed is on the matter. He decried the reckless vituperation of Mr. Leo Ogor that: “The Supreme Court cannot stop us from legislating and if they say that it (Supreme Court) is stopping us from law. It is misleading and it amounts to misreading the powers of the Supreme Court”, describing it as a brazen attack on the superiority of the rule of

law and decision of superior authority of our law courts. This, he said is not in any way good for our democracy that must be seen as primed on the Rule of law and respect to the judgment of our courts of competent jurisdiction adding that this type of absurdity must be condemned by all with commonsense of respect to rule of law, civility, decorum
and decency. The Senate had on Sunday said that the Supreme Court lacked the jurisdiction to stop the National Assembly from performing its legislative duties as far as the process of amending the 1999 Constitution is concerned. The Federal Government had instituted a suit challenging the powers of the lawmakers to per-
form its duties under the Constitution. The decision of President Jonathan to veto the Fourth Alteration bill to the 1999 Constitution, presented to him, informed the suit. He had raised a number of issues including the failure of the lawmakers to produce evidence that it secured the mandatory four fifth majority in amending Section 9 of the Constitution. The lawmakers had planned to override the President’s veto after a review by the Constitution amendment Committees of the two chambers. But Abaribe, in an interview with journalists in Abuja, said the Supreme Court was wrong to stop the lawmakers in the performance of their legislative duties. He said, “The Supreme Court is wrong. The law does not allow one arm of the government to stop another arm of government from performing its duties. The Supreme Court cannot stop us from legislating and if they say that the Supreme Court is stopping us from making laws, it is misleading and it amounts to misreading the powers of the Supreme Court.”

and April 11 elections. The crisis led to calls by some party chieftains for the resignation of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for alleged non-performance and improper utilization of campaign funds. The NWC on its part, accused the presidency of sidelining the members during the entire campaigns and accused the Presidential Campaign Organisation of mismanaging the electioneering process thereby truncating the re-lection of Jonathan.
Already, PDP has described as diversionary and unnecessary, what it described as false and tendentious claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the Presidency and the PDP are not cooperating in the transition process. The party charged the APC to put its house in order, come straight and tell the nation the confusion in its camp instead of trying to shift blames. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement said the meetings of the transition and inauguration commit-
tees of both parties have been going on fruitfully and wondered where the false alarm is coming from if not a measure of confusion in the APC camp. “Whilst we understand Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s excitement in the euphoria of his party’s unexpected victory, we view the APC’s provocative statement, especially the unguarded invectives on the Presidency and PDP as an unfortunate display of arrogance and falsehood ostensibly aimed at heating up the system and creating room to cover for its inadequacies thereby inventing excuses for any failure in office. “We can confirm that the APC

Transition Committee led by Mallam Ahmed Joda has met at least twice with the Presidency team led by Vice President Namadi Sambo while the Timipre Sylva-led APC Inauguration Committee has been meeting almost on daily basis with the PDP team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim. It is therefore most uncharitable for the APC to attempt to mislead the people by claiming that the PDP-led Presidency was not cooperating in the process. “Although the ruling party suffered some electoral set back, Nigerians are witness to the fact that the PDP has remained humble in defeat while focusing on rebuilding and reinventing itself. Such should not in anyway warrant the unnecessary attacks, vituperations and insults from the APC. “As we look up from the lowest level we have ever fallen, we
are fully determined to start the process of ascending back to an acceptable level in earnest. The APC must therefore learn to be decent and cease to be arrogant as that would amount to taking the goodwill of the people for granted. “What should be of more concern to an in-coming government like APC is the negative signals and the rising worries by Nigerians over its flip-flops and apparent nervousness of its President-elect who has started reneging on his campaign promises. “Nigerians were bewildered when they heard General Buhari renege on his messianic posture and told them in clear terms not to expect him to rapidly fix the problems of nation as he had promised during the campaign. “The same President-elect who boldly stated in his campaign manifesto that ‘I, Muhammadu CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

on April 2, 2015 is clear on the promise made by Buhari. “General Buhari in answering a question on how to deal with the divisions in the country said ‘the actual division which is worth bordering about, I think in terms of social instability, that is insecurity in the North east and in the Delta area, which I think they have been with the country long enough that we know how they started and what stage they are now, therefore we are confident that we will rapidly give attention to security in the country and I believe we will effectively deal with them in two months when we get into office’. “When asked how he would
achieve this, General Buhari said: ‘I think firstly we have to register the cooperation of the neigbouring countries, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, although some efforts were made by this administration but it was not good enough and it was too late’. “Only recently, the President– elect barred a television house, the AIT, from covering his activities over unexplained security and family issues. Following public outcry the APC reversed the directive only for the President-elect to release a statement denying the ban and blaming overzealous aides. “Instead of engaging in shadow-chasing and dwelling on in-
sults and unnecessary display of arrogance, the APC leaders should be worried that Nigerians are increasingly becoming apprehensive that their party has already started going back on the promises it made to them. “Nigerians are not in a hurry to forget that the APC promised to rapidly fix the economy, generate, transmit and distribute electricity on a 24/7 basis, pay N5,000 monthly to 25 million poor Nigerians; provide allowances to the discharged but unemployed Youth Corps members for 12 months, create additional four million new homes, provide free education and meals for school children and bring naira to the
same value with the dollar”, the statement said. The PDP cautioned the APC that Nigerians would not accept any excuse for failure especially given that the outgoing administration has laid very strong foundation for rapid economic growth in addition to the successes recorded in the fight against insurgency in the north east. The party assured Nigerians that having done much to nurture the nation’s democracy to a globally acknowledged level, it would even do more by offering the most constructive and credible opposition as it repositions to regain power in 2019.

The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had alleged that Ajudua, who met Bamaiyi in the prison, colluded with Rosulu Oluronke, the then registrar of Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of an Ikeja High Court, to defraud Bamaiyi by collecting the said amount from him on the claim that it would serve as legal fees to help him (Bamaiyi) secure the services of Chief Afe Babalola. According to the anti-graft agency, Ajudua was alleged to have told Bamaiyi that the money was delivered to Chief Babalola. In his witness, on Tuesday, Adenipekun told the court, presided by Justice Lawal Akapo, that the chamber did not receive any money or brief from Ajudua.

It is a full-time affair and they must be fully committed to give quality representation. Law-making requires plenty of work. It requires hard work. So, they should come with no illusions at all about what is required of them. And they should come prepared to serve. At this point in our national life, Nigerians expect much
more from government and they should be able to deliver what Nigerians expect,” Ndoma-Egba remarked. On what the high turnover of lawmakers portends for the strengthening of National Assembly as the main symbol of democracy, he said: “It will slow down its growth. It will slow down the growth of the institution. “It will not grow as fast as it could possibly grow. That is because the institutional memory of the parliament is determined by the aggregate memory of its members. And the more members you have returning, the

Unravel locked up aviation funds, Buhari urged Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo
ÏÏÏThe
in-coming administration of Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) has been urged to release funds meant for the aviation sector, claimed to have been locked up by former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. Aviation sector operators decried the way and manner subventions to the sector were disbursed and utilised, stressing that the funds were actually not ploughed into the sector by the beneficiaries. In a chat with Daily Times, Managing Director of MedView Airline, Alhaji Muneer Bankole, noted that lack of access to long-term loans and double digit interest rates were crunching operators who had also been denied access to funds meant for the sector, which was locked up by the former CBN governor.
larger the institutional memory. A parliamentarian is just like a snail or a tortoise. He carries his house, that is, his shell with it. It moves around with everything it has – his memory, his knowledge, and his contacts. And it is one institution where you don’t have handing over notes. So, as a parliamentarian leaves, he leaves with everything he has. There is no handing over note. So, it will have very significant negative effect on the growth of the institution.”

Tension at UNIZIK as students leaders write VC Nkiru Nwagbo
ÏÏÏTension is mounting at the
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, following a letter addressed to Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ahaneku, by the President of the Students Union Government (SUG), Mr. Noble Eyisi, over some perceived anomalies in the institution. As the students were circulating the letter in the campus, security operatives tried as much as they could to mop up the document, but it was late as most people in the university community had got copies. In the letter, several allegations were levelled against Aghaneku, most of which bordered on corruption.
The SUG president alleged that for the first time, Year 1 students were asked to pay the sum of N7, 500 for what the school management called ‘Biometric Capturing Fee’, adding that with about 6, 000 students, admitted this session, paying the amount, the sum of N45 million was collected and wondered what the money has been used for. Eyisi also demanded to know how the students’ union dues paid annually were utilised because, according to him, the students, who were the sole owners of the money, had been demanding to know how much was in the account. Other demands of the students included reasons behind the hike of the post-UME fee from N1, 000 to N2, 000 by the
present management of the university; why the management objected to the food price of N150 per plate initiated by the SUG; why SUG officials were not paid allowances as obtainable in other tertiary institutions and why Ahaneku initiates and carries out policies that directly affect the students without consulting them. The letter said: “Our dear VC, the students are the bedrock of any university. We demand that you take us as your utmost priority. As this is a federal institution and in view of the trending change and zero corruption in Nigeria through our Presidentelect, General Muhammadu Buhari, we demand a transparent system and a complete studentsoriented government.”
ÏÏÏHundreds
of traders, on Tuesday, protested over insensitivity shown by a new generation bank, over payment of compensation on their shops, which were engulfed by fire from the bank’s generating set on March 3. The traders had, on Monday, earlier crippled commercial activities at the market branch of the bank at Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The protesters with placard bearing various inscriptions such as “Pay us our money”, “Enough is enough” and “Ecobank, stop oppressing us”, stormed the bank as early as 8.a.m., barring the entrance of customers and staff of the bank from gaining access into the bank. It took the intervention of policemen from the Ughelli police station to disperse the protesters.

WHO: No useful data seen from Ebola vaccine trials
A health worker prepares to inject a man with Ebola vaccine in Conakry, Guinea.
ÏÏÏWith Ebola nearly stamped
out in West Africa, vaccine trials will probably fail to provide enough useful data on how well they protect people against the deadly virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on
Tuesday. Liberia was declared free from Ebola by the government and the WHO on Saturday, after 42 days without a new case of the virus, which killed more than 4,700 people there during a year-long
epidemic. Guinea reported seven cases in the week of May 4-10, while Sierra Leone had two, Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO Assistant DirectorGeneral for Health Systems and Innovation, told a news briefing
in Geneva. "The best news is we are going to zero cases; there is absolutely no doubt about that," she said. But two experimental Ebola vaccines - developed by GlaxoSmithKline and jointly by Merck and NewLink Genetics - being tested on volunteers may not yield sufficient data on efficacy as case numbers fall, Kieny said. "It is not clear whether it will be possible to have even a hint of efficacy from these two vaccines," she said, noting that they already had been proven safe. "To have efficacy we must see if people are actually protected, as the number of cases is going down it is not clear whether there will be a strong robust answer to this question at the end of epidemic," she said. Two drugs - Zmapp made by Zmapp Pharmaceuticals and sIRNA by Tekmira Pharmaceuticals - are also being tested and it is hoped that they will produce some limited results on efficacy, Kieny said. The U.N. agency this week hosted a two-day experts' meeting on Ebola research and development.
Philippines, Japan hold naval drills in South China
ÏÏÏThe Philippines and Japan,
which both have bitter maritime disputes with China, have conducted their first ever bilateral naval exercises. The day-long drills on Tuesday in the South China Sea involved two Japanese destroyers and a Philippine Navy frigate, according to Manila. The Philippines officials insisted the drills were not meant to send a message to China, but were instead focused on improving military capabilities. "This is for safety purposes, just to avoid encounters at sea, unusual incidents," The Philip-

"We have noticed the relevant report and will pay close attention to it. As you can see, at present the overall situation of South China Sea is stable. We hope the relevant country can respect the efforts and willingness of the regional countries who are protecting the peace and stability in the region by themselves, do not hype up the tension everywhere

in South Sudan have raped girls, seized boys to become soldiers and torched towns in some of the heaviest fighting seen in the 17-monthlong civil war, the United Nations (UN) said on Tuesday. Over 300 000 civilians have been left without "life-saving aid" in the northern battleground state of Unity, after the UN and aid agencies pulled out due to a surge in fighting, with over 100 000 forced to flee their homes. and do not take actions that could harm the security and mutual trust among the regional countries and actions that could affect regional peace and stability," she said. Hua also accused Manila of "repeatedly" violating international laws and "stirring up" tensions. "The evidence has proved again that the Philippines is truly a rule breaker and the trouble maker," she said. Philippines officials told local media that Tuesday's drills would be held within the Philippine's 44-kilometer contiguous zone, near Corregidor Island,
where there is no territorial dispute with China. About 300 kilometers to the west lies the reefs, rocks, and rich fishing grounds of Scarborough Shoal, which is claimed by Manila and Beijing. Following a 2012 standoff, China seized the strategic shoal and has prevented Philippine fishing boats from reaching the area. Further south, China is strengthening its presence with an ambitious series of land-reclamation efforts in the Spratly Islands, parts of which are claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.
said it was "increasingly concerned" about reports from Guit and Koch counties in Unity state of "towns and villages being burned, killings, abductions of males as young as 10 years of age, rape and abduction of girls and women, and the forced displacement of civilians." The violence is some of the worst in months, as government forces push south from the state capital Bentiu into an opposition zone around the town of Leer, home to some of the country's
once lucrative oil fields. The International Committee of the Red Cross has also withdrawn staff from Leer and warned that escalating fighting between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar was forcing thousands of civilians to flee for their lives yet again. Unity state governor, Joseph Monytuil told reporters late on Monday that government troops aimed to take Leer from opposition forces within days.
Pakistan pledges support in fight against Taliban ÏÏÏ
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday pledged support to Afghanistan in its fight against the Taliban during a visit to Kabul, the latest sign of a thaw in their oncefrosty relationship. Sharif's visit to Kabul, his first since President Ashraf Ghani came to power in September, comes as concerns grow over an upsurge in Taliban-led violence in Afghanistan. "I can assure you Mr President Ashraf Ghani that the enemies of Afghanistan cannot be the friends of Pakistan," Sharif said at a joint news conference with the Afghan leader. Afghan officials have frequently accused longtime nemesis Pakistan of harbouring and nurturing Taliban insurgents, who are waging a 13-year war against local and foreign troops in the country.

Africa peacekeeping force may be on the way ÏÏÏA continental peacekeeping
force could come closer to reality, as African Union (AU) ministers of defence are meeting in Zimbabwe to review progress made in the establishment of the African Standby Force (ASF), reports say. According to The Herald, the two-day meeting kicked off on Monday, with defence, peace and security experts from 54-member states set to assess progress made towards the operationalisation of the standby force. A News Day report quoted Zimbabwe National Army Major-General Sibusisiwe Moyo as calling for the strengthening of security co-operation among member states to enable the continent to respond quickly and effectively to crises. "Better co-ordination will help speed up the delivery of assistance during crises," Moyo was quoted as saying.

Kashamu: Between powerful men and the law
A Comrade Philip Ogenyi
s a close watcher of the debate on renditions across the globe being championed by the American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU) and other international organisations to take a detail study of the on-going politically motivated KASHAMUgate, I will put issues in perspective without attempting to dignify or demonise any individual. At the first official visit of Barack Obama to Africa in Ghana, he identified the problem of Africa to be the continent having strong men rather than strong institutions. The thinking is that unlike individual strong men, strong institutions, like in a democracy, are anchored on rule of law, fairness, justice and equity to all concerned. In this vein, laws must be clearly written down no matter how highly placed in the society everybody is bound to live by it . This is why we cannot talk about rendition in Africa without critically looking at the case of Prince Buruji Kashamu and his indictment by the US authorities for alleged drug related offences. The hues and cries against plans to forcefully abduct him should not in any way be misconstrued to
mean obstruction of justice. No one should have anything against extradition, which Wikipedia described as “the official process whereby one country transfers a suspected or convicted criminal to another country. This varies sharply from what those against Kashamu are proposing. They are working on extraordinary rendition or irregular rendition, which our earlier source described as “the government sponsored kidnapping and extrajudicial transfer of a person from one country to another.” Tragically, those championing rendition in Nigeria are in custody of all valid judgements in the United Kingdom, which had earlier vindicated Prince Buruji Kashamu and are fully aware that he is innocent. Upon their realisation that they cannot make a case against Kashamu before an impartial arbiter, the infamy of an illegal abduction or kidnapping remains the only way left to satisfy their bruised ego. People of conscience must dare to say no to such people because Nigeria is not a banana republic. An American judge, Charles R Norgle, District Judge of United States District Court for the Northern District Illinois, Eastern Division on the July 15, 2010 ruled that Kashamu is not a fugitive. This is
contrary to the information in the public domain that Kashamu has committed a crime and absconded from prosecution in the United States. In his words, “In Hijazi, the Petitioner had not fled the United States. Id at 412. The Seventh Circuit reasoned that the fugitive disentitlement doctrine there did not apply to Hijazi. Id. In the instant case, there is also no indication that Kashamu has fled the United States.” Before this, a court in England presided over by district Judge Tim Workman on January 10, 2003 declared in his judgment (after 3 years of diligent trial) that he found the man not guilty culpable. The US authorities have not appealed this judgment and no steps have been taken further by the US until now that they are being instigated by some elements in Nigeria. Pertinent points to note and reiterate include the fact that the US authorities have till date not made any extradition request to the Federal Government as admitted by the Attorney General in his letter of January 28, 2015 and then separately by US George Norgle in 2013. Judge Posner of the US 9th Circuit pointed out in his judgment of September 15th 2014 that “Kashamu remains in Nigeria, living openly, a prominent businessman and a
politician belonging to the ruling party. The hullabaloo about the whole saga remains in the wildest imagination of Prince Kashamu’s enemies and those he has defeated through his humanitarian programmes for women and youth empowerment initiatives. The ongoing desperate attempt by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and his co-conspirators to flagrantly abuse the rights of Prince Buruji Kashamu and abduct him to the US is therefore an assault on the Senator-elect. Even if a rumour the plan is also a wrong signal concerning the incoming and the expected principled administration of General Muhammadu Buhari. We hereby invite the U.S government and the incoming administration to dissociate them from this nefarious plan. General Buhari bears a peculiar burden in this regard as he risks being again associated with the kidnapping of a Nigerian with the only difference this time since the kidnappers will attempt to export the subject instead of trying to import him. General Buhari must not allow anyone or group of persons nursing grudges to besmear his administration with scandals arising from illegal abduction.
Buhari: The past is no answer for the future
H Franklin Otorofani
aving worked hard for it for the last twelve years in what could easily pass as one of the most sustained presidential ambitions in modern history, president-elect Mohammadu Buhari won. He will be duly sworn in come May 29, 2015 and assume duties as leader of the world’s largest black country. From all indications, the change of guards for which preparations are now underway at fever pitch, will be peaceful and orderly and the APC, that motley coalition of ethno-religious political parties, will be tasting power at the centre for the first time since the beginning of this dispensation. As things are fast turning out with its unprincipled fair weather chieftains jumping ship, the fate of the PDP is currently unknown and there is danger of the party going down with President Goodluck Jonathan. This must indeed be troubling development in the polity for those who had thought, rather prematurely, that Nigerian democracy had come of age just because Jonathan conceded defeat to Buhari. While that singular historical ac-
tion on his part was doubtlessly revolutionary in the Nigerian context, it was and remains a one-man effort not necessarily representative of Nigeria’s political class as a whole. Had he lost the vote I could not have imagined Buhari towing such peaceful path as Jonathan did in conceding defeat and congratulating the winner even before the full results had been declared. In addition, by now Nigeria would still be burning and the world rushing to put out the ethno-political conflagration. It would appear therefore that only Jonathan had brought change for himself not necessarily for others, even in his own party that is still mired in business as usual and politics of the stomach. And while his peaceful and democratic disposition may have robbed off on some, the vast majorities of Nigerian politicians are still steeped in the politics of the past of which cross carpeting was and still the order of the day. At the risk of being accused of undue cynicism, I venture to say that nothing has changed in Nigerian politics except of course for the peaceful transition. Now if the fate of a great mainstream pan-Nigerian political party like the PDP is to be determined by the electoral fortunes of its presi-
dential flag bearer in a particular election, it is indicative of the fact that it is a party without a soul and shared governing principle to be begin with. It shows that it’s a party that had lacked internal unity and cohesion, one that had existed and thrived solely on the power and attractions of spoils of office. In addition, at the first hint of cessation of those benefits finds itself hit by a gale of massive defections. The once roaring giant that bestrode Nigeria’s political landscape for the past sixteen years has thus been reduced to a limping midget literally overnight. As such, the long nights that its true and dedicated rump of membership will inevitably pass through in the months and years ahead should present it with a great and golden opportunity to reinvent and rebuild itself from the ground up. Given the crude character and well known dictatorial tendencies of the APC and its leadership, God knows the nation could do with robust opposition at the centre and Nigerians expect no less from the PDP, deserted by its members or not. PDP is now the sole opposition to serve the nation in the trying times ahead. Why trying times after a peaceful transition? That is the easy part; the hard part is not behind but
ahead of us. Therefore, rather than bury its head in the sand and recoil into its shell and lamenting its fate, the PDP should take pride in the fact that it has delivered true democracy to the nation. In addition, it is the only political party in the nation’s history that has pulled off such a historical feat. There is none before it that had successfully conducted general elections and handed over power to another in a peaceful transition. And regardless of the idle charter by renegade partisans and hack writers, the party is handing over to another not a prostrate economy in recession or stagnating as they would have you believe despite evidence to the contrary but one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, indeed the world. Does the PDP and Jonathan have unfinished business? Yes, they do. However, their unfinished business is Nigeria’s unfinished business for the incoming administration. For better or for worse Nigerians have spoken through their ballots that they wanted to give the APC, a political contraption cobbled together two years ago with no track record by aging recycled politicians, a chance to prove itself in governance.

The landmark recorded recently in the history of Nigeria’s university system through the foundation laying of an additional University Teaching Hospital and College of Medicine, clearly indicates the need to ensure even spread and access to tertiary education for all, particularly the much needed courses that would further give a robust projection to the future of the country. Although coming barely few days to the handing over to the incoming government by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, the teaching hospital and college of medicine, sited on 600 hectares land, is solely sponsored by Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and has aptly been described as another breakthrough in the mandate of the Fund. Jonathan, who performed the ground-breaking ceremony of
Bogoro, TETFund scribe
the twin project at Akwete-Akpa, Otukpo, Benue State, explained that Nigeria would be better when the institutions start churning out professionals to cater for the health needs of her people. Represented by his vice, Architect Namadi Sambo, the President said: “I am excited by the level of expertise this institution will produce in the nearest future. It will be a centre of excellence”. He, unwittingly, noted the efforts of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and Na-
tional Universities Commission (NUC) at making the project a reality, while also appreciating the local communities for donating a vast land for the site. Factually, no development can take place without the local community involvement and in this case, the people of Akwete-Akpa, Otukpo, in Benue State, convincingly identified the need for the institution and what it would do to their lives. One of the ‘son of the soil’ and top brass of the PDP in the state,
current Senate President, Senator David Mark, in his remark, said the people of Benue State would forever remain “grateful to the Federal Government for bringing such a huge project to their soil”. Mark’s praises for Jonathan, undoubtedly, had no political undertone, particularly since the ruling party, apart from undergoing internal crisis, would not remain in the saddle come May 29, 2015.Without mincing words, therefore, the teaching hospital and the colleges were sited in Benue, the home state of Mark, to ensure that prospective medical students from the catchment area and Nigerians in general have access to quality training. In his goodwill message, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of University of Agriculture, Chief Chike Udenze, said the idea of building the health institutes was an affirmation of the present administration’s relentless effort to transform the education sector. Giving a brief history of how the project was initiated, the Chairman, Presidential Implementation Committee for the establishment of the University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Eugene Okpere, explained that through the spirited efforts of Senator David Mark, President Jonathan was magnanimous enough to grant the request for the estab-
lishment of the institution. The project, he said, was not only designed to provide teaching and learning facilities for the College of Health Sciences, University of Agriculture, Otukpo Campus, but also to provide high quality healthcare services and development of integrated cutting-edge research in health sciences. The development of the concept for this idea, he said, was placed squarely in the hands of the Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who in partnership with TETFund as well as ministries of Health and Education ensured the idea came to fruition. Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), he said, has demonstrated profound commitment to the concept through provision of funds and requisite administrative support for the overall success of the project. TETFUND has released the sum of N200 million to ensure the smooth take-off of the project. The Chairman, Board of Trustees of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Dr. Musa Babayo, was ably represented by Prof. Patricia Donli, member representing the North Central geo-political zone and Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro, the Executive Secretary of the Fund was also represented by Architect Matthew Abu, the Director of Project Management.

THE ALGEBRA AND CALCULUS PROJECTS FOR THE DIFFUSION OF USEFUL KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUNG MINDS MOTTO: Happy is he who is able to know the causes of things and to use that knowledge wisely.
My name is Ogunshola, Shina Samuel Seyi, I am the initiator of the above project, our objective is to build the spirit of learning. Show that mathematics is the language of nature, make mathematics and it’s myriad of uses, Lucid, enjoyable and inevitable. We intend to supplant the notion the mathematics is a set of rules and packet of tricks rigged up by peculiar teachers, representing a misled or perverted societies without any good purpose but to afflict young people, like a misled Nigerian musician derogated mathematics as “Jagbajantis” such attitude will surely hinder our development. The performance of students in mathematics over the years have being abysmally low. The last statistics showed that 70% of the student that took mathematics in WASSCE failed. To ameliorate this situation we are starting with questions and answers of the last WASSCE.

Exam malpratice roars it heads again as WAEC cancels 2014 withheld results Tunde Atobatele At the 59th meeting of the National Examination (NEC) committee of WAEC, the committee unanimously decided to cancel the withheld results of the 2014 WEAC examination. The committee, at the meeting, screened and decided to cancel the withheld results of candidates who had engaged in various examination malpractices during the examination. The review, according to the communiqué issued was done on irregularity, special and clemency cases during the June 2014 West African Examination (WASCE) The communiqué also contained several other penalties melted to the examination offenders which was duly singed by an officer of the Public Affairs Department of WAEC, Mr. Damanus Ojijeogu. Excerpts, “For the
course of considering various reported cases of malpractices, the committee after diligent deliberations approved appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice”. This action is as prescribed by the rules and regulation governing, the conduct of the councils which approved that the entire results of such candidates involved in proven cases be cancelled. It reads, “in some conditions, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examination for a certain number of years, while the affected candidates shall be duly informed.” “The committee has also directed all the ad hoc examination functionaries who have been indicted of involvement or condoning malpractice during the conduct of the examination to be reported to appropriate Ministry of education”
“The Ad hoc examination functionaries who participated were culpable during the Nov/Dec 2014 WASCE, would also be reported to relevant bodies for disciplinary actions, in addition to the sanctions imposed on them”. “The committee, as in the previous meetings strongly expressed concern at the alarming incidence of malpractice in examinations and urged stakeholders to join hands in curbing the menace”, the communiqué reads. It would be revealed that, a recent opinion poll by the Daily Times on examination malpractice had largely condemned this ugly trend, and thereafter called on the governments at all levels to raise the bar in combating and fighting this ills in the society. No doubt, if this ugly trend among students continues unabated, the future is far from being secure.

OPINION
UNILAG Students’ Union and challenges ahead By Babatunde Kawthar On March 25, 2015, students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) voted in new executive of the students’ union, which was banned 10 years ago as a result of violent protests staged by students in and around the school. Protesting students in 2005 vandalised many property in the university campus including the residence of the then Vice chancellor, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe. The union was, however, reinstated this 2014/2015 session by the Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. Rahman Bello, after several pleas and agitations from different quarters. The reinstatement of Unilag Students’ Union (ULSU) seems to have come at a crucial point and amidst challenges facing the institution at the moment. The University of Lagos is currently experiencing erratic power supply, which according to the school authority ‘is as a result of technical problems in the power supply system of Eko Electricity Distribution Company’. Due to this, agitations are coming from different angles of the campus calling for decisive actions to tackle the problems accompanying the erratic power supply. The school management on April 29 sent information across to students informing them of the challenges and efforts being made. In the message signed by Dr. (Mrs.) Taiwo Ipaye, the registrar and secretary of Unilag Governing Council, ‘all efforts are being made by Unilag engineers and Eko electricity engineers to address the issue’. She said electricity is currently being supplied through generators. Despite the efforts of the school authority to supply electricity, Unilag has been characterised by inadequate water supply, leading to incessant protests by students and call for postponement of examination by a fraction of the students. In the face of these challenges, ULSU has found itself unable to organise the students and speak with one voice. Some students believe the executive of the body led by the president, Martins Abiodun, is not ready to take a pro-student stand. Until recently, the governing body of ULSU had been disturbingly quiet regarding issues of electricity and water supply. The only information from the body was a message

Invest in French Language, DG urges govt
Eddy Uwoghiren UNIBEN
Director General of the Nigerian French Village Badagry, Lagos, Prof. Raufu Adebisi, has called on the government to increase funding towards teaching of French language in the country. He made the call recently at the Akin Deko Auditorium of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State, while delivering the keynote address at the 2nd Biennial International Conference on French hosted by the department of Foreign Languages, University of Benin (UNIBEN) with the theme ‘Challenges of French Studies in Nigeria’. Adebisi, who frowned at continuous lackadaisical attitude of
government towards the learning of French language, said the enormous challenges facing the language has made the language to be relegated to the back door. He listed poor remuneration, inadequate teachers, and lack of employment opportunities for those who studied French, non-availability of materials for learning and poor representation of French language in places of authority as challenges facing the language in the country. He stated that an investment in French language will lead to astronomical increase in Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through creation of employment and foreign investment in the nation as a result of Nigerians’ ability to communicate effectively with the language.
SUG president wants LASU re-opened The President, Student Union Government of Lagos State University, LASU, Adeyemi Onikoro, has appealed to the Lagos State government to reopen the school, saying the patience of students is wearing thin as they are tired of staying at home since the institution was closed down before the general election. Adeyemi, disclosed that the student union and Lagos State government has enjoyed cordial relationship since it is a state owned school and as such it is only when the union’s demands
are not met by the state government that students believe it is their responsibility to protect their interests. “We may embark on yet another protest if our request is not granted as we urge the state government to intervene in the crisis between the management and the various academic unions in the institution,” Adeyemi said. It is important to note that Adeyemi Onikoro is the 25th president of the Students Union Government of the university and currently a 400 student of Law.

1846 President Polk declares war on Mexico On May 13, 1846, the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly voted in favour of President James K. Polk’s request to declare war on Mexico in a dispute over Texas. Under the threat of war, the United States had refrained from annexing Texas after the latter won independence from Mexico in 1836. But in 1844, President John Tyler restarted negotiations with the Republic of Texas, culminating with a Treaty of Annexation. The treaty was defeated by a wide margin in the Senate because it would upset the slave state/free state balance between North and South and risked war with Mexico, which had broken off relations with the United States. But shortly before leaving office and with the support of President-elect Polk, Tyler managed to get the joint resolution passed on March 1, 1845. Texas was admitted to the union on December 29. While Mexico didn’t follow through with its threat to declare war, relations between the two nations remained tense over border disputes, and in July 1845, President Polk ordered troops into disputed lands that lay between the Neuces and Rio Grande rivers. In November, Polk
sent the diplomat John Slidell to Mexico to seek boundary adjustments in return for the U.S. government’s settlement of the claims of U.S. citizens against Mexico and also to make an offer to purchase California and New Mexico. After the mission failed, the U.S. army under Gen. Zachary Taylor advanced to the mouth of the Rio Grande, the river that the state of Texas claimed as its southern boundary. Mexico, claiming that the boundary was the Nueces River to the northeast of the Rio Grande, considered the advance of Taylor’s army an act of aggression and in April 1846 sent troops across the Rio Grande. Polk, in turn, declared the Mexican advance to be an invasion of U.S. soil, and on May 11, 1846, asked Congress to declare war on Mexico, which it did two days later. After nearly two years of fighting, peace was established by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848. The Rio Grande was made the southern boundary of Texas, and California and New Mexico were ceded to the United States. In return, the United States paid Mexico the sum of $15 million and agreed to settle all claims of U.S. citizens against Mexico.
1940 Churchill announces: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.” On this day in 1940, as Winston Churchill took the helm as Great Britain’s new prime minister, he assured Parliament that his new policy will consist of nothing less than “to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime.” Emphasizing that Britain’s aim was simply “victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of terror, victory however long and
hard the road may be.” That very evening, Churchill was informed that Britain would need 60 fighter squadrons to defend British soil against German attack. It had 39. Within a couple of weeks, the conservative, anti-Socialist Churchill, in an effort to make his rally cry of victory a reality, proceeded to place all “persons, their services, and their property at the disposal of the Crown,” thereby granting the government the most all-encompassing emergency powers in modern British history.

1971 Paris peace talks at standstill Still deadlocked, the Vietnam peace talks in Paris entered fourth year. The talks had begun with much fanfare in May 1968, but almost immediately were plagued by procedural questions that impeded any meaningful progress. Even the seating arrangement was disputed: South Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Cao Ky refused to consent to any permanent seating plan that would appear to place the National Lib-
eration Front (NLF) on an equal footing with Saigon. North Vietnam and the NLF likewise balked at any arrangement that would effectively recognize the Saigon as the legitimate government of South Vietnam. After much argument and debate, chief U.S. negotiator W. Averell Harriman proposed an arrangement whereby NLF representatives could join the North Vietnamese team but without having to be acknowl-
edged by Saigon’s delegates; similarly, South Vietnamese negotiators could sit with their American allies without having to be acknowledged by the North Vietnamese and the NLF representatives. Such seemingly insignificant matters became fodder for many arguments between the delegations at the negotiations and nothing meaningful came from this particular round of the ongoing peace negotiations.
1972 Fire breaks out at club in Japan On this day in 1972, a fire broke out at the Playtown Cabaret in Osaka, Japan killed 118 people. Only 48 people at the trendy nightclub survived the horrific blaze because safety equipment was faulty and safety procedures were not followed. The top floor of Osaka’s Sennichi department store was the home of the hip, if slightly seedy, Playtown Cabaret. A favourite of the city’s young people, a
large crowd was there on May 13 while an electrician toiled in the department store, three floors below. Inadvertently, the worker set off a fire that reached some oil-soaked rags in a nearby storage room. The fire quickly spread, climbing both the elevator shafts and the outside walls of the building. The only remaining means of egress for the young people upstairs were the fire exits and
emergency chute. The fire exits were hidden by drapes and almost no one in the club found them. Twenty people did locate the emergency chute, but it collapsed as they made their way to the ground and all of them were killed. Other people sought to escape the smoke and flames by jumping to the roof of a nearby building, but it was too far and all who tried were killed.

Ex-Niger Delta militants want South South for Reps Speaker Titus Akhigbe Benin
ÏÏÏ Ex-Niger
Delta militants, who belong to the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Movement (NDENYLM), on Tuesday, appealed to the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider the sons of the region in the APC in ceding the speakership of the House of Representatives to the South-South. They specifically said the commitment and doggedness of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, to the party should be rewarded in ceding the position, as
compensation to the zone. The group asserted that the people of the SouthSouth had anointed the member representing Owan Federal Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, Mr. Pally Iriase, for the position. The group, therefore, declared that ceding the position to the zone would not only boost the chances of the APC in future elections in the oil-rich zone, but as well serve as compensation to the zone, having lost the Presidency to the North. This was contained in a communique issued shortly after a meeting of the group, signed by its National Secretary, Abamojie Soboma Ajudua, in Benin
City. In a communique, the group said: “We have been following the on-going discussions and high wired-politics over the geo-political zones that are best suited for the Senate Presidency and the House of Representatives Speakership. "It has become expedient for us to echo the resolve of our region regarding the Speakership of the House of Representatives, in favour of Pally Iriase, the member representing Owan Federal constituency of Edo State. “Our disposition to nonviolence has been informed by a need to sustain the new wave of peace and hospital-
ity. “As a country that strives towards equity and justice in the dispensation of ethnic nationalities’ relations,” the group said, “it would be reasonable to reward President Jonathan’s humane disposition to the North throughout his tenure, where the North held the most resounding key positions (Vice President, Senate President, House of Reps Speaker, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and Minister of Defence etc.). “In view of our strategic position, with respect to the national economy, where we ‘lay the golden egg’, it is only fair to consider one of our sons for such a position," they asserted.

Mallam Abdulrahaman Abubakar, Adamawa State House of Assembly member-elect for Mubi South Constituency of Adamawa, has reiterated his colleagues’ commitment to ensure the emergence of a popular and competent candidate as the Speaker of the House's 7th Assembly. Court remands cleric for killing friend Titilope Joseph

Lagos State Magistrate's Court, sitting in Ebute Metta, has ordered the remand in prison of Fatai Afobaje (a.k.a Alfa), who allegedly killed his friend, Rafiu Sulaimon, and shared his body parts.
‘We won’t succumb to imposition of Speaker’ Abubakar, who was elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that the members of the party had resolved to have a Speaker from the central zone of the state, since the governorelect and his deputy were from the Northern and Southern zones, respectively. The Magistrate, A. O. Komolafe, said Afobaje should be remanded pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. The incident, which attracted media attention in February, this year, had it that the suspect met the victim in a commercial bus a few years back, when the latter did him a favour of paying his transport fare. It was also gathered that Alfa allegedly cast a spell on Sulaimon and defrauded him of his monthly salaries, which the victim was always turning over to him after each month's pay.

Northern youths seek 30% political appointment Victor Jibrin Kaduna
ÏÏÏ As the All Progressives
Congress (APC) moves to form a government, northern youths are requesting for 30 per cent of all political appointments in recognition and appreciation of their efforts during the 2015 presidential election. The Chairman, Northern Nigerian Youth (NNY), Balami Isaac David, made the request at a summit held
in Kaduna, on Tuesday, to review their past and chart a new course for Nigerian youths for the future. Speaking at the event, which featured delegates from 19 states of the North, David lamented that at any given time, youths were used by the political class to campaign in their favour but dumped them after realising their ambitions. “Youths are only considered as stakeholders by politicians during elec-
tions, but when it comes to sharing of offices, they are offered none. That means we are like willing tools, and treated as such,” he regretted. He said that the change that had taken place today at the centre, for instance, could not have been possible without the youths. Said David: “The political change in favour of APC today came from the youths, therefore they should be recognised and appreciated
by accommodating them in areas where decisions are taken. Nigerian youths are educated and intelligent enough to hold public offices.” During the 2015 general election, he recalled that the Nigerian youths put their differences behind them, went into the elections with the interest of the country at heart and the result of that understanding was the change that we are seeing today.
Transparency Coalition of Nigeria (TCN) has called on the President-elect, General Mohammed Buhari, to insulate the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from being manipulated by politicians to witch-hunt perceived enemies when he assumed office. In a statement issued by the group's Secretary General, Mr. Peter Gimba, in Abuja, on Tuesday, the TCN said it was concerned about the use of the EFCC for political purposes by the executive arm in years past, an act it said had undermined the credibility of the anti-crime commission and attempts to enshrine transparency in all government business.
“The reasons for the establishment of the EFCC remains genuine and the case for the commission remains strong. However, the perceived use of the EFCC by the Executive to muzzle or intimidate its real or perceived opponents into submission is a worrisome development that has diminished public confidence in the EFCC and raised questions about the government’s commitment to due process, accountability and transparency,” the TCN said.

PDP raises alarm over alleged plans to take over Rivers, Delta, A’Ibom that in Delta, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states, the APC machinery is working round the clock to ensure that it upturned its victory and the mandate freely given to it by the people in these states. The PDP stated that it was aware of the clandestine moves by the APC to procure and compromise some stakeholders in the elections including INEC and security personnel to bear false witness and doctor electoral materials against the PDP at the tribunal. This, Metuh said, was in addition to sponsoring negative publications in some section of the media, laced with false claims and distortion of election figures to suit their nefarious plans

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over what it called the “heinous plot against the people’s will in Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and Delta states” by the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP has, however, warned that it would not accept any attempt by the APC to manipulate the process and rob it of its clear victories in these states or any other state in the country for that matter. PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh stated this yesterday at a press conference in Abuja. According to Metuh, findings by the PDP, showed

of swaying public opinion and the course of justice against PDP in these states. The main of aim behind the APC’s desperation to take over these three states, Metuh added, was the APC’s belief that they (the three states) are strategic to the PDP and that taking them away will further weaken and undermine our party and accelerate the quest for a one-party state in our country. According to Metuh, “You will recall that at the end of the 2015 general elections, our party’s leader, President Goodluck Jonathan, in a rare show of statesmanship, conceded defeat and congratulated the APC Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.

Mu'azu: Bickering not in the interest of PDP Lateef Ibrahim Abuja
Ă?Ă?Ă? The
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Muazu, has appealed to all stakeholders and members of the party to put behind them the disappointment of defeat, rest all misunderstandings and put the survival and stability of the party ahead of all other considerations. In a statement sent from his bed rest abroad on Tuesday, Muazu said though the party’s defeat in the last general election was painful, members should key into the intervention by President Goodluck Jonathan and not allow the situation
to further divide the party. According to him: “The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has noted the various reactions that trailed the unfortunate loss of our great party in the last general election. “In the last few weeks, the media has been fishing on these reactions, with a section even blowing it out of proportion to a level that has become a threat to our oneness as a family. “As the National chairman and a key stakeholder in this party for the past 16 years, I quite understand and appreciate the concern, pain and frustrations of our members, regarding our defeat.
“I am also deeply worried about the division the development has generated within the PDP family, especially regarding whether or not the national leadership should be dissolved as a direct consequence of our collective challenge. “In the course of events, there have been reactions and counter-reactions among party members. Mistakes have been made, some of them avoidable. But this is the time to put all of them behind us and move ahead as our party and its interests remain paramount and overriding. “Expectedly, our party has had a share of media bashing and misrepresentations, which contributed
6
immensely to the misunderstanding we are facing in our fold. "For instance, in one of the press reactions from my office, the media quoted one of my aides as saying that our party would be 'buried' without the National chairman, a clear deviation from what was actually said. "Such misrepresentations of our party leaders also abound in the social media and we must be wary of them. "However, I have already issued a strong warning to all my aides to henceforth desist from making comments on matters of party administration in the media or any other forum whatsoever.

NDLEA convicts 8,637 for drug offences in 5yrs Segun Adio
Ă?Ă?Ă?
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has convicted 8,637 drug offenders in the past five years. The Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, Ahmadu Giade, who said that the convictions would serve as deterrence to drug traffickers, further disclosed that the agency had maintained an impressive annual average conviction of 1,727 since 2010. Spokesperson for the agency, Mitchel Ofoyeju, made this known in a release made available to the Daily Times. The NDLEA boss attributed the remarkable conviction scorecard to the strict adherence to prosecution policy of the agency. “NDLEA has one of the
highest criminal conviction scorecards among security agencies in the country. In line with our prosecution policy, all arrested drug traffickers are diligently prosecuted. Conviction is top priority to us, because it serves as punishment to offenders, while it also deters many from indulging in drug trafficking, Giade stated. According to Giade: “In 2010 the NDLEA won 1,509 convictions, in 2011, 1,491 while in 2012, the number of persons convicted rose to 1,718. The convictions further increased to 1,865 in 2013 and 2,054 in 2014. This brings the total number of drug offenders sentenced to various jail terms since 2010 to 8,637. We also investigate and confiscate the assets of drug traffickers.
Igbo has option of self-determination if marginalised, says Ohaneze Sunday Nwakanma Umuahia
Ă?Ă?Ă?
President of Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in Anambra State, Elder Chris Eluemuno, has warned that if Ndigbo is marginalised or intimidated in any way in Nigeria, they have no other option than self-determination. He further stated that if the President-elect, Gen. Muhammed Buhari (retd) failed to implement the report of the National Constitutional Conference, the unity, equity and fairness in Nigeria would be in doubt. Eluemuno further stressed that killing the Confab report would amount to killing the unity of the country. The Ohanaeze chieftain, who spoke in Awka on Tuesday, said: “We in the Ohanaeze want the implementation of the Confab resolution. Buhari should implement that report. He must give us one extra state. If he turns his back to that report, he is turning his back to the unity of Nigeria. If he kills the report,
he is killing the unity of Nigeria. He said that the change that came to the country in the wake of the last general election was a welcome development, given the fact that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) had stayed on the stage for a long time, but he emphatically stated that there would be no real change if there is no structural change in the country. Eluemuno disowned the Chief Ralph Obioha Ohanaeze Caretaker Committee that visited Buhari and canvassed for jobs, saying there was no single crisis in the Igbo sociocultural organisation and those who went to Buhari did not go there on behalf of Ohanaeze, but for their own selfish purposes. He said that the South West and the North East have for some years not been in position but they did not go cap in hand begging President Goodluck Jonathan for appointments noting that it is not only Igbos who did not vote for Buhari, yet those people have not shamelessly gone to beg for appointments.

UBA simplifies, speeds up payment solution Emmanuel Ogbonnaya
United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc in conjunction with Unified Payment Systems Limited has scaled up efforts to transform the Nigerian payment industry, through a much advanced but simplified and faster payment option “PayAttitude”. The Bank in a statement described PayAttitude as a Near Field Communication (NFC) tag, with an internal chip which works on NFC-enabled POS terminals at designated partner locations across Nigeria. It is a faster and seamless, contactless payment solution that never fails. “The new payment solution
makes it possible for a customer to make payments for goods and services with an adhesive payment tag attachable to mobile phones or flat surfaces. It is as easy as tapping the phone against a PoS terminal. This assurance was made by the team leader, Dr Sheu Salau, TTL, WAAP, World Bank, during a one-day working visit and facility tour of the group in finalising its collaboration agreement with FIIRO on Monday. He stated that WAAPP is a re-
gional programme growing in 13 West African countries, adding that WAAPP is promoting the upstream and downstream sectors of agriculture. He said: “WAAPP is ready to stand with FIIRO to popularise the works and technologies. You have been able to come up with 100 per cent cassava noodles, so it is good for Flour Mills, Honey Well, and others to buy into these new findings and technologies and,” he said. He expressed satisfaction with the egg powder product, stressing that it would be very useful to bakers, as it would help in curbing waste and stabilising egg price during glut to keep the egg famers afloat. “We need to do more in the sub region to popularise FIIRO’s work. Aquaculture is the prior-
ogy only reinforces our commitment to the creation of innovative payment solutions.” Adedeji explained that a major benefit of the new payment solution is that all payments are always 100 per cent successful with or without network connectivity, thereby eliminating the issue of “declined” payments on POS terminals. “It thus guarantees subscribers the confidence and comfort of always being able to pay for goods and services at merchant locations at all times notwithstanding network challenges.” This innovative payment solution is coming after UBA recently upgraded its IT system to
a more efficient, secure and faster banking platform enhancing the speed of the bank’s e-platforms including; internet banking, mobile banking and also greatly improving the uptime and availability of its e-Channels like the POS machines and ATMs. The new payment solution “PayAttitude” synchs perfectly with the bank’s upgraded banking platform delivering superior banking experience to UBA customers across Africa as well as with advanced security and compliance framework which will result in significant improvement in productivity and improved response to security and regulatory issues.

ity product of Nigeria, root and tuber is the priority product of Ghana while cereals is that of Senegal, so, it is not appropriate for me in Ghana to talk of aquaculture and start afresh when I can come to Nigeria to acquire the technology and save time, money and resources. So, we are engaged in technology acquisition and transfer,” Salau stated. Earlier in her presentation, Dr Gloria Elemo, DG/CEO, FIIRO, stated that FIIRO is saddled with the mandate to assist in accelerating the industrialisation of the Nigerian economy, through finding utilisation for the country’s raw materials and upgrading indigenous production technologies. She noted that FIIRO is the
only one in Nigeria that has a functional glass glowing facility, adding that when adequately patronised, it would save funds for the country and would earn foreign exchange. Elemo pointed out the institute pioneered the development of over 25 commercial cassava products, adding that the High Quality Cassava Flour (HQCF) has been used for production of bread since its inception. She noted; “Training of master bakers has been strengthened through the institution’s collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through the N10 billion Cassava Fund.” “The use of sorghum for the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages has tremendously improved.”
The Bureau of Public Entreprises (BPE) has asserted that it has the right to privatise or concession any part of the Nigerian ports. This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the Bureau’s Head, Public Communications, Mr Alex Okoh, on Monday in Abuja. According to the statement, the clarification becomes necessary based on the petition against the concession of old Warri Port Terminal ‘B’ by a group, NPA Warri Port Stakeholders Forum. “The petitioners alleged that BPE is working with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Federal Ministry of Transport (FMoT) and office of the Vice President to concession the terminal to ``their cronies.” “They further allege that the BPE’s action is illegal as they are usurping the powers and functions of ICRC, ‘’ the statement said. The group urged the presidency to stop the BPE or else the petitioners would take up the matter with the incoming administration or resort to legal action, it said. “However, we wish to further clarify that NPA is listed in the BPE Act of 1999 as amended and therefore NCP/BPE has the full powers to handle and conclude the transaction,” it stated.

Double digit interest rate is killing aviation investments – Med-View CEO
Bankole
In this interview with CHUKWUEMEKE IWELUNMO, the Managing Director of the airline, Alhaji Muneer Bankole speaks on the growth of the airline, challenges in the sector and prospects for Nigerian aviation industry. Excerpts:
Sir, we know Med-View began as a travelling agency before it metamorphosed to an airline, how has the story been so far? Med-View Airline is one of the fastest growing carriers in the Nigerian aviation industry. Since December 2012 that it commenced flight operations with two Boeing 737 aircraft, its fleet has improved to five with plans to acquire more aircraft and expand its routes even to international points before the end of the year. We started as a hajj carrier and as a General Sales Agent, GSA, to Saudi Airlines; we are one of the major players licensed by the Saudi authorities for hajj and Umrah. We get visas for people and we run cargo business on a daily basis with Saudi Airlines and at the same time, we have been licensed as a regional and international carrier. We are today in the centre of aviation in totality. What others are doing as you see from the outside is just a domestic car-
rier or a cargo carrier, charter operator or Umrah or whatever, but we are in all. What was your background before establishing MedView? I was in Nigeria Airways for 30 years, grew up there and worked as a cadet officer in commercial department. What that entails is that it gives me a wider scope of knowing all sectors of the industry. All these made it easier for me as at today sitting down here and working in this company. From the small world, I got to the peak of my carrier in 1998-1999. How did your experience and the changes in the industry affect the development of Med-View? It was a nice time for the country, but the all things came down under the regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. When Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo decided to liquidate Nigeria Airways, it was a sad experience
and the beginning of the end of aviation industry because that decision, probably he might use a military fiat and people like us believe that a military administration is maladministration because they don’t manage anything. It’s a manner that they don’t consult, but just use fiat. As at the time of liquidation of the airline, this country had over 60 Bilateral Air Services Agreements, BASA. What it entails is that we had 60 countries sharing the bilateral aviation policies with Nigeria and it means none of these countries can go alone, but now, they are coming and we call it Open Sky policy and they are going free. In those days, it was a commercial agreement where we would agree on frequencies. When we got liquidated, we were stranded overseas, so, I decided to think on what to do. At the same time, 80 to 90 per cent of Nigerians fly to Saudi Arabia, it took them by ignorance. In the course of this, I thought of setting up a travel agency so that the Saudi authorities can grant us a license, which would enable us to get the visa right and start taking people in a normal way. This is the beginning of the story. That was why we set up Med-View International Travels and Cargo doing Umrah. On the international line, we are close, Dubai has given us four frequencies; we have established there with our personnel, we are in Jeddah. So, the future is what we are looking forward to. Are you comfortable with the interest rate regime for business operators in Nigeria especially for those in aviation industry? The interest rate is killing and I will tell you we have issues with banks, which is the only financial institution we can discus with today in this country, but the business is not good for aviation. For any Nigerian bank, they want a short term loan, which is not the business for aviation. Aviation requires a long term loan and for banks, they want to recoup their inter-
‘‘Buhari, has made statements that it is sad for a country as big as Nigeria, with 170 million population without a national airline, which I want to support him on because having a national carrier is a selling point for a country.’’ est ahead of the money. They go up to 22 to 24 per cent and this is two digits and in other climes, the interest is less than 0.5 per cent. That’s why Med-View is going to the market; to get more money and get more people onboard to run the company because it’s a project we have a passion for and we don’t want it to die. We are growing inside it with love and gradually. As at the last quarter of last year, we decided to launch the airline into the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE. The consultancy is working on this. So, in the next couple of weeks or months, you will see us there. What would you want to see as the roadmap from the incoming administration? The President-elect, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari has made statements that it is sad for a country as big as Nigeria with 170 million population without a national airline, which I want to support him on because having a national carrier is a selling point for a country. If your nationals are based in the United States now, you fly to any des-
tinations there, definitely, you will encourage those nationals to bring in something to sell from the money they made, but here, they are not there. Flying Delta Air Lines from there to here, the patriotism is not there. So, we need to rethink. My advice here is that whosoever that is going to be Minister of Aviation should be a technocrat. We need someone who knows the terrain and understands the business. Politicians have no business to be here at all. Aviation is not just administration, but technical. You must understand the drive and what it entails because the people you are going to talk to in other parts of the world are not politicians like you. So, whatever you are speaking should be the language that the two of you can communicate with. The other one is to revive the industry. Basic elements are the ones killing the industry; aviation fuel – we are blessed, how do we need to import fuel into this country? We need to bring back our refineries to life. Also, how can we as an airline in Nigeria be paying charges in your own country? Flying between Lagos and Abuja, we are paying over-flight permit, we are paying costs and by landing, we are paying costs. This is a country that belongs to us and the business belongs to Nigeria. That is why what we are charging is not the right price because the dollar is above N200 and we are charging N14 to N15, 000 to Abuja, which is less than $100. We pay taxes to Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, which collects five per cent and several other charges. They are not necessary. Also, the NCAA should be given the power of autonomy because any country you go to outside this country, you are going to discuss with the Civil Aviation Authorities, CAAs. That’s the only window you have. We are looking at the situation where we should belong to those areas.

were happy, when the government, during the regime of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo started the process of privatising the power sector. This is because people were tired of the inefficient behemoth initially called National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and then Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) towards the end of its existence. They were hopeful that with the completion of the privatisation process the situation would automatically improve. Now, months after the conclusion of the exercise, the situation has not improved and instead it has nose-dived without any prospect of improvement in the near future. And as if to rub salt into the peoples’ injury the new owners have retained all the illicit and wicked charges their predecessor used to charge. And as the situation is getting worse, like a callous landlord, the distributing companies (a.k.a disco) have continued to charge their hapless customers hefty amount for supplying darkness! To those who intend to eke a living through small businesses it has been hell as the discos have ensured the businesses run with heavy charges without corresponding service. The discos have been collecting from the government as
well as from the citizens. To them it is a win-win situation whereas to the average citizen it is lose-lose situation. A woman whose house falls within an area where there is no meter and who decided to go into frozen foods business soon discovered she was just working in vain. She acquired a generator to ensure that there was power supply always but to her chagrin the moment the disco guys saw the shop with the freezer, they started giving her outrageous bills, not minding the fact that power supply was getting worse. So while she had to pay more for fuel she was also paying more to the ‘darkness suppliers’. At a point, she couldn’t continue, she sold off the freezer and closed shop. Recently, the Steel Manufacturing Group of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria cried out through its chairman, Sunil Goel, that the group members may shut down operations in the face of persistent hike in electricity tariff which has crippled many steel companies in the country. He said this at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), in Abuja. He urged the commission to revert to the previous Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) that was scheduled to run till 2017. The steel group explained that its members’ long-term plans were based on the previous MYTO which was being reviewed without much notice and without considering the members’ feelings. But NERC, in its characteristic civil service style, only told the complainants that it had advertised the review processes many times in the media. As a domestic consumer, even if you have a meter, your pains are not over. You are subjected to the payment of a monthly fixed charge of N735.00 like it was in the days of NEPA. So if for some reasons you didn’t buy recharge card for some months, whether you consume power or not you have to pay the fixed charge for those months. There is a need to do something about this wickedness. NERC may have to be reconstituted to be effective. If this issue is left untended it is capable of creating problems for the government very soon.

Has PenCom granted approval to Nigeria Police Force Pensions? ÏÏÏI
would be grateful if the TIMESEARCH could help contact the National Pension Commission Abuja if it is true that it had granted an operating licence to the Nigeria Police Force as I was meant to understand by some policemen. I do not understand why this should be so, because my father (although late) was an ex-soldier, but did not enjoy such benefit from the Nigerian Army. At this point, I begin to wonder why the Nigerian Police should be given such a preference and what could have led to it. Please shed more light on this enquiry because it is of great importance to people like me, whose fathers did not enjoy anything like that while alive and in the service even though my father was a soldier and not a policeman. Solomon Onanefe 76, Market Road Warri, Delta State At the National Pensions Commission, (PenCom) Abuja, an official who was contacted on the enquiry of Solomon Onanefe told the TIMESEARCH that it is true the Commission had granted an operating licence to the Nigeria Police Force Pensions (NPF Pensions) as the 21st Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) after fulfilling very stringent licensing requirements. It was revealed that the NPF Pensions which was specially licensed to administer the pension contributions of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force under the Pensions Reform Act 2014 was already taking steps to receive the transfer of the over N300 billion pension contributions of all the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the other 20 Pension Fund Administrators which are currently managing the funds in line with the conditions for the licensing of the Police PFA. In reply to a question, the official who refused to disclose his name told the TIMESEARCH that the NPF Pensions was set up and licensed to cater for the personnel of Nigeria Police as a compromise to prevent NPF from exiting the Contributory Pension Scheme. “This is so following the enactment of the of the Pension Reform (Amendment ) Act 2011, which exempted the personnel of the Military and Intelligence Agencies, the Nigeria Police and other agencies which brought heavy pressure to bear on the
Arase, IGP
Presidency to also be excluded from the Contributory Pension Scheme. It was stated that the Federal Government decided that the Nigeria Police personnel should remain under the Contributory Pension Scheme, following several meetings and consultations, but with special administrative solutions to address the grievances of their personnel within the framework of the Scheme. According to the statement issued by PenCom on this issue, (which this official produced during this interview), it revealed that with the granting of operating licence to the NPF Pensions, the spirit of the compromise whereby the police remains under the Contributory Pension Scheme, being regulated by PenCom but own their PFA to cater for their specific needs and address their genuine complaints against the PFAs which amongst others include poor service delivery has now been realised. The statement explained that all police pension contributions are currently being transferred to First Pension Custodian which has custody of the funds whereas NPF pensions manages the funds and its required to publish its account annually like any other PFAs. “Meaning the safety net that covers contributors fund in other PFAs is also covering police pension funds,” the PenCom in the statement said. “The viability of the NPF Pensions is assured by the performance of other ventures owned by the Nigeria Police Force which are profitable companies that operate under relevant regulatory authorities,” the official concluded.

MURDER OF PREGNANT LAWYER IN ONDO
We want justice! -Husband, family cry out Parents and husband of late Oluwadamilola Fajana (nee Ojo), a pregnant lawyer caught by stray-bullet during a fracas between ethnic militia group, O’dua People’s Congress (OPC), and suspected oil vandals in Arepo area of Ogun state has called for justice over the death of their daughter. ‘TOSIN AJUWON reports from Akure, Ondo State. Dismay and shock hung heavily on the faces of family members at the Ojos residence at Abiodun Street, along Oke Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital when Daily Times arrived. The sudden death of their breadwin-
ner whose life was cut short at the prime of her career is a tragedy too hard to conceal. Mr. Andrew Babafemi Ojo, the father of late Oluwadimilola was a picture of sorrow as he introduced members of his family to journalists, starting from his bereaved wife, Mrs. Ronke, down to the siblings of late Oluwadamilola who all wore the same mournful look as their father. Narrating the incident with manly composure, Ojo, a journalist who is into event planning and outdoor services, told the press how the life of Oluwadamilola was cut short during a pandemonium that followed a gun duel between the groups of the
O’dua People’s Congress (OPC) and some suspected oil pipeline vandals in Arepo area between the boundary of Lagos and Ogun state. “My daughter was murdered in the feud between the ethnic OPC and some oil pipeline vandals in Arepo at Obafemi Owode area of Ogun state.” According to his account, Oluwadamilola whose husband was on admission had left the hospital about 4 p.m. to bring some clothes for him. But pandemonium broke loose as gun shots rent the night and in the process of running for cover, the pregnant Damilola was caught by a stray bullet. It was later found the fracas was be-
tween the OPC and suspected oil vandals. 29th Arepo 4pm Daily Times gathered that the late lawyer got married in February 21, 2014 to Prince Bukayo Fajana, a native of Oke-Agbe Akoko, in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo state. Her husband graduated from Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) as an Engineer and works with Cadbury Nigeria plc. Arepo community in Ogun state has been in the news recently over rampant cases of oil pipeline vandalism. Activities of the vandals had prompted President Goodluck Jonathan to award the
“keep-watch” contracts to the OPC to curtail the activities of the hoodlums, but criticism and crisis have trailed the award of the contract. The death of this young lawyer has brought the worrisome trend to a head. The Ojo family is shaken by the incident and will not let it be swept under the carpet as other similar cases. Like someone whose eyes has been stung by a bee, Ojo is now calling for justice on the death of her daughter and the unborn child, stressing that the killers must be found and prosecuted for the crime committed. Death in Church: ‘Waheed lived a reckless life’ - Uncle CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29
late Waheed. It was also learnt that the deceased, a 32 year old father of four, has been divorced for the past seven years and has been lving alone. The case which was first reported at the Ipaja Police Division, was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Interrogation Department (SCIID), where Popoola and Folashade are been interrogated. 27 year old Popoola looked perplexed, told his story to Daily Times. “I am the Presiding Pastor of the Church and I also live in the Church compound. On that Thursday morning, I was about going to take my bath and prepare for a programme which holds in the Church every Thursday when I heard Folashade - one of the members of the Church who also
lives within the Church premises – shouting, Pastor come o, come and help o! “I ran into the Church auditorium where the shout was coming from and there I saw her standing next to a man on the ground. I asked her what happened and who is the man. “She said the man ran into the church shouting help! help! I will die o and he slumped. I didn’t know what to do. So I rushed outside to at least ask if anyone around knows him. Fortunately I saw the husband to one of the members of my Church who said he knows the man. “He said the man lives in Abule, a street not far from the Church, so we all hurried to the Abule. We asked a few people if they know Waheed and they said yes, that he is one drunk who lives in that neighbourhood.
“Some of the people around came to the Church; they checked him and confirmed him dead. I immediately had to call my boss, the owner of the Church. I also called his son who is also a pastor. When his son came, he advised we report the case to the police, so we went to the Ipaja police station to make the report.” Folashade’s story was not different from her Pastor’s account. The mother of three who claimed she has been living in the Church compound since her husband left her also told her story: “I was sweeping the Church auditorium that Thursday morning, in readiness for the programme. While sweeping, a man ran into the Church, calling out for help. He was shouting, Pastor help me o, I will die o. “I thought someone was chasing him, but I later discovered he
was alone. He fell to the ground and I quickly called out for the pastor, who also came in almost immediately. He asked what the matter was and I told him. Sincerely we have nothing to do with his death. No matter what, I have confidence in the God we serve that he will vindicate us.” An uncle to the deceased, Chief Idowu Animashaun, who also spoke with Daily Times said he was told about the unfortunate incident two days after it happened. He however has this to say of the deceased. “Waheed lived a reckless life, he took to drinking as a way of life and that was why I stopped him from coming to my house.” Mother of his four children, who gave her name as Moshundat also attested to the fact that her ex-husband lived a carefree life. “I was married to Waheed for eight
years and I had four children for him. But in the later part of our marriage, he took to drinking and leaving home for as long as two months without asking of how I and the children are surviving. For me, I don’t suspect anyone as been responsible for his death.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer was unavailable to confirm the story but he promised to get back to us, but was yet to reach our crime desk as at press time.

“I want the people that killed my daughter and grandchild to be prosecuted and brought to book. They should be arraigned in court to face the consequence of the crime they perpetrated. I want justice upon those who killed my daughter and stopped my child at the prime of her life and from achieving her long cherished dream to be brought to book.” Unimpressed with police investigation of the murder, Ojo holds the OPC culpable and demand their contract be cancelled. “I also want the contract of the OPC to be revoked. I want the death of my child to be like
a change agent that would stop unjust killings of other Nigerians murdered in this country. Although, the police has began their investigation into the case.” Holding outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan for the tragedy that has befallen him, Ojo said: “I blame President Goodluck Jonathan over the death of her daughter adding that Oluwadamilola would not have died suddenly if the president hadn’t given the constitutional responsibilities of the security agencies into the hands of the touts. “President Goodluck Jonathan is culpable and has hand in the death of my daughter. He should shouldn’t have taken the consti-
tutional duties of the security officers in Nigeria and give it to an ordinary Nigeria made of touts and miscreants to watch over the oil pipeline when they are not even given the proper training in the handling of arms and ammunitions. “I want to correct the insane talk that the OPC were at the location in Arepo as a result of the contract given to them by President Goodluck Jonathan. Honestly, this is not right to me because as a one who has lost my daughter and grandchild under this situation, I have a right to speak out. “If you watch a video of the OPC released on the internet, you will see how these miscreants were behaving by shooting sporadically, destroying goods and killing people wantonly with nobody checkmating their activities just because the President has given them a contract to protect Oil pipelines. “Even though, they are to protect the oil pipelines, can’t they go into the creeks and stay where they were posted, rather than coming to the major town, shooting and killing people unjustly? This ridiculous and sad because my daughter and unborn child cannot be brought back to life,” he concluded angrily. He also recounted how her late daughter, a graduate of law from the prestigious former University of Ado Ekiti (UNAD) now known as Ekiti State University (EKSU), in Ekiti state was nurtured and
given the best education she deserved through thick and thin. Speaking between sobs, Mrs. Ronke Ojo described her daughter as gentle and brilliant and was really loved in the family. “My lovely daughter was very gentle and humble; she cannot even hurt a fly. If you had come her way, you will understand what I mean. Her classmates in secondary and in the university nicknamed her ‘exco’ because she is always reading her Bible. “Oluwadamilola is reserved and humble. I will miss coolness, and the advice she always give me. She is always grateful of everything you give her. She would appreciate everything around her. Honestly, my late daughter has been a good moderator, a pillar in this house and the family”.
Although parents of the late Damilola have visited her house at the beach-land estate in Ogun state, Ronke said she wants Damilola’s death to gear the government to use all machinery in its possession to stop the wanton killings of innocent people in the country. “It’s unfortunate that President Goodluck Jonathan gave the job of monitoring oil pipelines to illiterate OPC gangs who killed my daughter. As they have spilled the blood of my daughter, I want the government to use her blood to stop the wanton killings of innocent people being killed daily in this country.” As a parting shot she said: “I know the blood of my unborn grandson and my daughter they blotted out will revenge.”

The Secretary of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Isaac Ojemhenke, criticized the management of the commission for the planned exercise, while the FCT chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Aliyu Musa, bemoaned the working conditions of workers in the commission.
First Lady denies scheming Aisha Buhari out of AFLPM leadership Monday Agu, Jnr
ÏÏÏFirst
Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has denied plans to rig out the incoming First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari from the leadership of the Africa First Ladies Peace Mission. Patience was reacting to reports that her decision to host the 8th Summit of the AFLPM, in Abuja, on Friday, was a grand design to stop Hajiya Aisha from succeeding her as President of the mission. Her statement read in part: “It would be recalled
that Nigeria’s Hajia Turai Yar’Adua was elected President of the African First Ladies Peace Mission during the 6th Summit in February 2008, in Congo Brazzaville, for a term of two years. Her tenure ought to have come to an end in 2010 when she should have organised a summit to elect a successor and hand over accordingly. The unfortunate incident that led to her sudden exit from office is well known and need not be mentioned here. “This inability of the
former President to officially hand over created a leadership vacuum in the African First Ladies Peace Mission for some time until Her Excellency, Dame Patience Jonathan was prevailed upon by her colleagues, the African First Ladies to convene the Summit in July 2012 at which she was subsequently elected her to serve for two years. “For the avoidance of doubt, according to its internal regulation, the tenure of office of President of African First Ladies Peace Mission is for
a period of two years only. This therefore implies that the tenure of office of the incumbent President ought to have ended in 2014, when a fresh election should have held for a new executive council. “This emergency summit, therefore, is to forestall a misunderstanding that Nigeria intentionally desires to remain in office as President, having held the position for the past seven years, instead of the two year tenure assigned to each country in the internal regulations of the Peace Mission.”

Open letter to President-elect Buhari
Charly Boy ÎÎÎ Oga GMB,
How far? I trust you have been getting enough rest and getting ready for the mother of all battles in your life. You know how hard and how long you have fought for this and now that you have it, we can’t wait to see how our lives will CHANGE!! You must understand
that our expectations are high, but you can’t blame us too much. By faith or design, you have become a symbol of renaissance for a nation that has been battered by mismanagement and unprecedented corruption. Kai! Odiegwu! Many of us were sold on your Change Campaign, tired of the usual statuesque and many more just wanted a better life for ourselves and our loved ones. All eyes are on you,
I trust you know that by now. This Change should demonstrate to us possibilities, hope again for the youths of this country and a channeling back to those core values which we hold sacred. Anything less will be same of the same. Shey you get? Fact from fiction, truth from rhetoric, I know that it is foolhardy to expect that one individual alone can by himself/herself bring about this Change
we desperately need and earnestly desire. However, inasmuch as you need to raise a viable team to work with, using the formula of zoning won’t cut it. My earnest advice to you is to choose officers and men strictly on merit and not necessarily what geopolitical zone they come from. Remember, this same zoning formula has been used at different times in this country, and each time, it has failed. The issue of zon-
ing coming up now again is a reminder of times in the past that we desperately want to forget. Same of the same? I would want to believe that you have come to heal and fix the rot. It will never be easy because of the wolves and sharks amongst us who benefit big time from the corruption, the poverty, the confusion and hopelessness they inflict on Nigerians.
So after May 29th, as you put on your boxing gloves and crank your whip, we will be watching with bated breath to see not only the will to fight this battle but the sincerity and strategies to lead us on the path of true healing for our broken Nation. Biko. Oga me, e don set oooooo. Much Respect, Na me. AreaFada, Charlyboy
No pity for poor Sadness
Yinka Olujimi ÎÎÎ In Nigeria, don’t ven-
ture into crime if you are poor. If you must be a criminal, aim for the rooftop of a skyscraper and not of a bungalow. Imagine the criminal, called Happiness Meschach Eboh, who was last week sentenced to five years in prison “with hard labour” by Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, Osun State – apologies to Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who in his infinite wisdom has told us that he is the Governor of the State of Osun and not Osun State.
But I digress. I am sure the parents of Happiness Meschach Eboh will today be wondering how they made the mistake of giving him the name Happiness. All he has brought to the family is Sadness – first by being poor; and, worse, by being a petty criminal. His offence: Conspiring with two other low lifers to dupe job seekers. According to the charge sheet, Happiness (better renamed, Sadness!) conspired with two others and “obtained a sum of N5,000 from one Issa Musa under the false pretence of assisting him in securing em-
ployment with the NSCDC, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 8 (a), (b) and (c) of the Advanced-Fee Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria”. It ryhmes, doesn’t it: five years for N,5000? What an embarrassment! Is that what a criminal should aim for? Mere N5,000? To give a job to people in NSCDC, when he could have asked for N5 million to help people secure jobs in the NNPC, the Mint, or some other juicy appointments. My anger: Our inimitable Professor Jerry
Gana has always taught us, “whatever you do, do it well. If you are a teacher, teach well, if you are a marketer, market well; a thief, “thief ” well” – I add. This Happiness (Sadness) should have known that in Nigeria, if you are a petty crook, the instrument of state will be brought down on you, mercilessly. Decisively. However, if you are a well-heeled criminal, you will belong to all the exclusive clubs in the country, be given the front seats in churches and mosques, bag chieftaincy titles and you will never be arrested. In the most unlikely
event that you are caught, you will get the Gabriel Igbinedion Family treatment – a slap in the wrist even if the offence for which you are convicted is most egregious. Arraigned at the Federal High Court, Enugu, on a 191-count charge of fiscal rascality while in office, the EFCC in 2008 reduced his charges to two. Lucky chap. His name is Lucky, anyway. He quickly pleaded guilty and was fined N3.5 million. Last week, his younger brother, Michael, also got his share of Lucky’s luck. Although convicted for another financial crime
perpetrated while Lucky was in power – put at a paltry N25 billion – another Federal High Court simply told the younger Igbinedion to pay N3 million and enjoy his peace. To date, the EFCC has not given any indication that it will appeal the judgement. What surprises me, even me, is that the accountant general co-accused of Michael, whose job was to execute the directives of his boss the lucky Lucky, was jailed, 20 years. See why no serious person should pity Happiness (Sadness?) in Nigeria.

television series, Super Story (One Bad Apple), by Uncle Wale Adenuga
Keen followers of Nollywood movies would readily recognize pretty, fresh face and petite actress, Grace Amah. From Ebonyi State, Grace who began her acting career as a child actress opens up on her journey into the world of make believe, as well as other details, many of her fans have been yearning to know about her. Can you still recall how your movie career started? That was over a decade ago after I wrote Jamb. While awaiting result, I decided to go after my passion, acting. I went to Winnis guest house somewhere in Surulere and met two wonderful personalities; Aunty Ayo Adesanya whom I have always admired on screen and Frank Ubaka, a movie producer and screen writer. Seeing Ayo that day was like winning a jackpot. I approached them and shyly told them what I wanted and as God would have it, they listened to me. Fortunately, Frank Ubaka called me a week later to tell me about a role for a 13year old in the movie, Chains Produced by Louis Isikaku. The movie was directed by Lancelot Oduwa Imaseun. I was over 13years then but could fit in perfectly for the character so I went for the casting and got the role. Thus began my journey into acting.

As a young lady going into the world of make believe, how did your parents take to your choice of career? My parents were not favourably disposed to my going into the acting world. They preferred I was a medical doctor or lawyer and I made attempts to read law but the urge for the acting profession did not allow me concentrate. However, my parents have come to embrace and support my career choice and they are happy with the outcome. It is only natural that parents would react negatively to things they do not understand but when they see the positive dividends of such work, they will appreciate and give their support. So did you get your parents blessings to act? Not initial but later, they gave me their blessing and support and have since been a great source of strength in the profession because I owe all I do to their prayers and counsel. How would rate the influence of the television series, ‘Super Story’ and your participation in it on your career? ‘Super Story’ (One Bad Apple) brought out the best in me and made me an instant icon in the industry. Every producer sought for me. It was the greatest moment I had at the beginning of my acting career which brought the creativity and potentials in me that later helped me in

the industry. How long have you been in the acting game? Over a decade Where do you think is your area of core competence; soaps or movies? Both. But while soaps brought me out and exposed my talents, movies were the harvest avenue in terms of acting prowess and greater maturity in handling stardom. What do you look out for before accepting scripts? First my fans. Actors are role models so any script that would end up as a source of education to fans and a pointer to certain issues in the society by way of correction and giving new direction in the way things should be done would be wholly accepted by me. I consider the positive influence any script would have on people before I take it up. In your over a decade in the movie industry, what would you say has been the industry’s biggest Moments? Nollywood has been acknowledged by government as the second highest contributor to the economy and that should be a source of pride to any member of the industry. Secondly, at a point in the past, Nollywood was the only source of entertainment to Nigerians because we produced what many people saw as a panacea to certain ills in the society as many societal issues were addressed. Movie Correspondent Mutiat Alli m.alli@dailytimes.com.ng 08115557378
Unfortunately, the story is no longer the same. I do hope that the movie industry would return to those glorious days when practitioners were known for creativity and not this mad chase for money at the expense of good work. Nollywood should earn respect from viewers and fans and not to be seen as an organization of loose women and men, drug addicts or home destroyers. All over the world, the movie industry is an entertainment sector and it is respected based on its productivity. Nollywwod can do better. Do you think Nollywood has arrived? Yes, in terms of scope and a wide range of involvement in different departments of government, I would say, Nollywood has arrived but I insist that Nollywood needs to address issues that make people have a negative perception about the industry. First, the government must address the issue of piracy so that those who work hard would not loose their hard work and Nollywood itself should develop a code of ethics to guide members on and off screen. You haven’t been featuring much in movies these days. Many assume you have stepped aside. I was away from the industry for about four years to attend to family

issues and nurse my baby but since I returned back to the industry, I have been featuring in movies. Only recently, I was in Enugu for some movies and I have also been on other locations. When the producers begin to bring out the movies, my fans will reconnect with me. Would you say you faced challenges to get to where you are today? Of Course, in every profession, there will always be ups and downs I had my challenges but I thank God I am moving on well. People complain that there are cabals in Nollywood how true is this? I don’t know about cabals. But Nollywood needs to be reinvented. We need to reposition the industry and act as one. There are different groups that do not want to be under the leadership of the Actor’s Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesinma. They operate on their own. Some other groups also came up with funny names and operate the way they want. There is no way the industry can achieve expected result if we are Continue on L7 Graphics Austine Agbovi a.agbovi@dailytimes.com.ng 07060402397

L7 Interview
Continued from on L2 divided. The question of cabal comes from the fact that some people feel they have the resources and control funds from government subventions and so decide who gets what, where and how. Apart from that, what I think the industry needs is a strong leadership with a code of conduct and every other thing will fall in place. Every profession has its own code of conduct; lawyers, engineers, even in the civil service, they have their own code of conduct or rules guiding their operations. It is only in Nollywood that people come in without following the rules. People get into it when a producer or director feels you can give him/her what he/she wants in whatever form. The repositioning of the industry will begin when we start to define rules to guide actions of members so that those who come in will feel that they have to be checked and not behave anyhow. The fault is in ourselves. Also, dividing ourselves into groups with different interest will only further showcase the industry in the manner you have described, cabals. How can one have a scandal free career in Nollywood ? Everyone who goes into any profession has a reason for doing so. Those who come into the industry to develop their talents would not have any reason to have scandals because they are focused and dedicated to what they have come to achieve. But those who see the industry as a shortcut to cheap fame
will naturally have scandals because their life will be out of tune with the standards required in the profession. People may create scandals for themselves through the way they behave, while some others may have scandals, perhaps by those who attempt to discredit good works. So, for one to have scandal free life in Nollywood, one has to be focused, dedicated and determined in the pursuit of one’s objective in the industry. Nollywood should not be seen as a cheap source of fame and organization for loose women. How has being a single mother impacted on your career? Being a mother whether married or otherwise is a good thing. It brings joy and satisfaction. I have not regretted it one bit. I am a happy woman with my son and his presence posses no challenge to me. I have coped with him and the acting profession effectively. One cannot be an actress forever and not have a family. There is no reason why having a family should be a challenge to working because both of them complement each other. You need to work to feed the family and you need your family to complete you. How do you think the private sector can partner with Nollywood to grow it like its counterpart in the western world? Nollywood is like any other aspect of human development such as
football and other aspects of sports. Investors all over the world look for such organizations to invest their money in when they know that they will have return on investments. Like I stated earlier, when Nollywood is properly organized with proper conduct of conduct for members and good leadership, investors would naturally want to identify with the industry, But when it is divided as we are presently, people may not want to invest their money. However, with government intervention recently, there is hope for the industry. The way and manner we manage what government gave will determine and give hope to intending investors but first the industry must be organized. Have we seen the last or best of you in Nollywood ? Of course not. Nollywood is up and coming and Nigeria will benefit more in due course.

Carvajal tips Real to overcome Juve
R
eal Madrid rightback Dani Carvajal believes the European champions can overcome Juventus in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final second leg tonight. Los Blancos enter today’s clash hoping to overturn a 2-1 deficit from last week’s game in Turin and Carvajal feels they are capable of doing it as long as they are not too rash. “We have to keep cool heads, be patient and not go too crazy,” he said. “We are aware a game of football lasts 90 minutes
and we have to make sure Juventus pay a high price and suffer, without possession of the football. “They created danger for us in Turin and we have to learn from that game. If we stay calm things will fall for us. “Afterwards, the boss made his feelings clear and we can’t afford to make so many mistakes again with simple passes because we gave them life by doing so. “This time we’ll have our fans behind us they are sure to be our 12th man. It will be a key factor in us going on to score goals.”
Falcons to battle Ghana, Cameroun in friendly Mike Otanwa
N
igeria’s Super Falcons is set to play friendly match with either Ghana or Cameroun before leaving for Canada. The reigning African champions have been in camp in Abuja, and were supposed to play Mali last weekend in an Olympic Games qualifier, before the Malians withdrew from the process. With no competitive game in sight to get the team into shape before the World Cup, Extra Time gathered that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reached out to both the Camerounian Football Association (CFA) and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for possible friendly matches before they leave for their Canadian camp. Both countries are yet to respond to the NFF’s request, but it is expected that the responses will be positive.
Joy, agony for Igiebor in Israel
I
Carvajal
t was an evening of mixed feelings for Nosa Igiebor in his team’s 1-1 draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva as the Nigerian scored his side’s lone goal but picked up a booking that rules him out of the Israeli State Cup final. Igiebor stunned the Arthur Vasermil Stadium into silence in the 28th minute, controlling a through ball from Nikola Mitrovic with his first touch taking him away from the defender before he deftly jabbed the ball past his international colleague Austin Ejide in goal for Hapoel Be’er Sheva. However, minutes after his goal the Nigerian picked up a yellow card that rules him out of the State cup final scheduled for May 20 against same opponents. Hapoel Be’er Sheva have two Nigerians in John Ogu and Ejide who both played the entire game last night.

Ejidike lauds organisers of NNPC/Shell Cup Andrew Ekejiuba
Amokachi
Amokachi to take over FC Taraba top job
D
aniel Amokachi looks set to take over as coach of Nigeria premier league outfit FC Taraba. The 42-year-old Amokachi, who is not expected to return as assistant to Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has handled Nasarawa United, Enyimba as well as the Super Eagles and U-23 national team. His former national teammate and close friend Tijani Babangida is a
consultant to FC Taraba. ‘The Bull’, as Amokachi was called during his playing days, was in Jalingo to watch the team draw 3-3 at home with Gabros on Sunday and a source inside the Taraba camp revealed that the coach is coming in as the new technical adviser all things being equal. Last season, Ndubuisi Nduka was sacked as the club’s coach and his assistant, Tony Ogharanduku, has since been in charge of the team.
F
ollowing the decision of the organisers of the NNPC/Shell Cup 2015 to acknowledge the expression of interest of the Office of the Nigeria Pillar of Sports to partner in this year’s edition of All Nigeria Secondary Schools Football Championship, the Nigeria Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Ejidike has lauded the organizers for their visionary policy towards revitalisation of school sports in the country. Ejidike in a statement made available to Extra Time through the Chairman, Office of the Nigeria Pillar of Sports, Prince Olayioye Ajide, described the partnership as a step in the right direction Ejidike said school sports should not be left alone in the hands of government; rather, corporate organisations, philanthropists and individuals should team up and encourage the organisers through donations and provision of logistics to enhance a befitting championship. He commended Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) and Worldwide Sports
Limited for their sense of responsibility and rising to the challenge of resuscitating school sports. Ejidike further stressed that the partnership of NSSF and Worldwide Sports is encouraging the combination of football and education among our talented students which has been on for the past 17 years. “My interest in partnering with the organisers of NNPC/ Shell Cup designed for all Nigeria secondary schools is hinged on the necessity to build a virile nation with fulfilling future for our children, which can only be achieved through creating an enabling environment and platform for the young students to realize and develop their potentials. “In this regard, it is a thing of joy for me to contribute and support the Nigeria School Sports Federation and Worldwide Sports Limited in this mission,” Ejidike stated. He however urged Nigerians to support any programme that can model the teeming Nigerian youths toward becoming useful citizens of the country.

Success to miss out of Flying Eagles list

Keshi not Eagles’ problem, says Weah Mike Otanwa
F
ormer African and World Footballer of the Year, George Weah, has said the problems that have seen Nigerian football struggle over the last years has nothing to do with Stephen Keshi, but rather with the team. The former AC Milan striker also says it doesn’t mean the team is bad, but they probably lack team work which has really affected them. The Liberian was speaking with regards to the concerns over the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to award Stephen Keshi a 2-year contract extension despite failing to lead the country
to this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. “Nigeria is a great nation and the fact that they didn’t qualify for AFCON 2015 doesn’t mean they don’t have a good team or a good coach,” he said. “They need to find a rhythm, try again and redouble their efforts and get back on the world stage. Sometimes it is not about the coach, but about team work. Nigeria may not have a team but they have lots of players and we should know players win games and teams win championships. “So, I hope they rebuild their team so that they’re seeded again at the world stage.”

NFF wades into Iheanacho’s visa hitch
T
he Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved swiftly to help Manchester City teen superstar, Kelechi Iheanacho, secure a visa and join up with the Nigeria U-20 team in Germany where they are presently in camp ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. It was reported that he is facing difficulties in trying
to secure a visa to travel to Germany to join up with his colleagues in camp from his base in England, but recent reports suggest he will be in camp before the end of the week. The NFF were alerted to the player’s plight in securing a Schenghen visa and as of yesterday took over the proceedings to secure him a
visa from the hands of Man City. Man City, in the views of the NFF, are not pursuing the issue with the urgency it deserve as obtaining a Schengen visa to travel to Germany shouldn’t take more than 48 hours and there are fears they want him to play in City EDS game this weekend.
ranada’s Isaac Success might be omitted from Nigeria final 21-man list for the FIFA U-20 World Cup unless his team communicates back to handlers of the Flying Eagles in the next 48 hours. While the technical crew are willing to include Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Gent’s Moses Simon in their final 21-man list based on their form for their clubs, they are uncertain about Success who has not played for Granada in the last two weeks. The team are also angered by the blackout they have received from Granada, who are yet to reply to any of the series of mails and reminders sent to them by the Flying Eagles.

INTERVIEW
Winning AFCON 2013 was memorable
–Egwuekwe
Azubuike Egwuekwe has been doing impressive things in recent seasons with Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, Warri Wolves. Wolves are the only Nigerian side in the running for glory in CAF club competitions (Confederation Cup) this season and the imposing Egwuekwe has been leading the charge from the front. The Nigerian international defender is still pained at Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and he recently sat down with supersport.com to discuss some of the more unconventional things about himself. Excerpts: As a kicker, what is your favourite food? Bitter leaf and ‘Akpu’ (local delicacy made from cassava). Can you share with us, names of your best friends in football? My best teammate at Warri Wolves is Uche Ossai. We both joined the club at the same time and have a great relationship. In the Super Eagles, Brown Ideye is my best friend. He’s such an unassuming and gentle human being. Who is the one celebrity you would not mind dating? Tiwa Savage, Nigerian singer is it. She’s beautiful and talented. She is the woman for me. What about your best-dressed teammate?
Oghenekaro Etebo is my bestdressed teammate. Sometimes, I wonder if he arranges the clothes he will wear the next day hours before putting them on. At the Super Eagles, the bestdressed is Azubuike Egwuekwe! What your worst-dressed teammate? Ojo Mine at Wolves. I am sorry I have to do this but yes, Ojo Mine is it. The worst dressed player in the national team is Nnamdi Oduamadi. Very, very poor dresser. Who is the most difficult footballer you have ever faced? That has to be Mario Balotelli. Those who criticise him probably have never faced him on the pitch. He’s extremely strong and good on the ball and even aerially too.
And your best goal? (Laughs) I scored a great one for (now defunct) NPA against Sunshine Stars at Onikan Stadium in Lagos. That was in 2008. I hit it from the centre circle and the goalkeeper had little chance (pauses)… It was a special strike. Who is the best coach you have ever worked with? Coach Stephen Keshi is a great coach. He makes footballers believe in themselves. He is also one of the few coaches who gives players the opportunity to do the business for the national team irrespective of where they ply their trade.
days as a kid.
Between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is your best? I will choose Ronaldo first because he’s a Man United product and also because he’s the greatest footballer in the world. What about your favourite automobile? Convertible… the one that has a single door and an open roof. When you drive such a car, you understand what it means to live in heaven while on earth. Tell us about your favourite holiday destination? Anywhere in the United States. I will go for a visit during the next off season.
What about your favourite colour? White is it! Can you also tell us your best memory in football? Winning the AFCON title with Nigeria in 2013 was a sweet experience. Nothing beats that till this moment. What about your worst memory in football? When Nigeria failed to reach the 2015 AFCON finals. I have never felt that bad in my life… To be honest, it still hurts! Finally, what would you do if you found $100 million in your bank account? I would invest it and use 25 per cent of it for charity work.
Which team is your favourite football club in the world? That has to be Manchester United. I have supported Man United from my

Serena TENNIS
set to roar in
Rome S
erena Williams believes this week’s Rome Masters will provide her with the truest test to roar on the clay ahead of the French Open. The world No 1 saw her strong run in 2015 come to an end last week in Madrid when she was knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual champion Petra Kvitova. However, despite the disappointment, she remained upbeat about her game and arrived Rome looking to claim her fourth title at the Foro Italico, having previously won in 2002, 2013 and 2014. With the French Open starting later this month, Williams is understandably keen to hone her game on the red dirt. The 33-year-old world number one said: “To be here in Rome is good, I feel like Rome is true clay-court tennis and it’s a little bit slower than Madrid and it’s a little bit more intense. “So I’m kind of interested to see how I’ll fare here.”

Quigg to defend world title against Kiko
H
aving missed out on a unification clash with Carl Frampton, Scott Quigg will instead take on one of his rival’s former opponents, Kiko Martinez, at the Manchester Arena on July 18 in the sixth defence of his WBA superbantamweight title. Martinez has lost to Frampton twice, most recently on points when he relinquished his IBF belt to the Northern Irishman. Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hearn held talks with Frampton’s counterpart earlier this year but no deal could be reached. Hearn went as far as offering the 28-year-old a guaranteed £1million but was eventually forced to consider other options. Martinez has fought once since losing to Frampton last September, knocking out George Gachechiladze in the second round three months later. The Spaniard reigned as world champion for 12 months and is also a former European champion.

Johnson-Thompson to miss title defence
K
atarina JohnsonThompson will not defend her title at the Gotzis Hypo-Meeting in Austria later this month as she is not “sufficiently prepared”. The 22-year-old narrowly finished second in the 200m hurdles at the Great City Games in Manchester on Saturday. But the European indoor pentathlon champion’s training has been disrupted by a knee injury sustained in March. The news will come as a disappointment to those anticipating a match-up in Austria between Johnson-Thompson and Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill. Johnson-Thompson has established herself as the best heptathlete in the world over the last 12 months, winning the prestigious Gotzis meeting last year with a score which placed her third on the British all-time list.

The Briton had considered skipping Rome to rest ahead of the French Open, after winning back-to-back titles in Munich and Madrid over the last two weeks. Murray, seeded third, will play Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in his opener. Murray beat Nadal in the Madrid final on Sunday before heading to Rome, where he practised twice on Tuesday before making his decision. The Scot also confirmed he will be working exclusively with coach Jonas Bjorkman from the end of Wimbledon until potentially the end of the year. REAL MADRID

I
t has been reported that Gareth Bale is not going anywhere at the end of the season; he is not leaving Real Madrid. But that’s not to say he’s happy at the moment, not by a long chalk. These are, as they say, the bad times. His agent, Jonathan Barnett, has pointed out one of the reasons of his poor performances.
According to a media report, the player’s agent says Bale’s teammates are not passing to him, and with just 16 touches of the ball in the match against Juventus—fewer than goalkeeper Iker Casillas had— he may have a point. Except, of course, it’s not as simple as that. The stats may well say he is doing the running and is
Bale not being passed to, but what they won’t tell you is why. The reality is the midfielders do not pass to him as often as they do to Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema (with the exception of his friend Luka Modric) and unfortunately that’s probably as much Bale’s fault as it is the other players themselves.
UCL: Illgner tips Real for finals
F
ormer Real Madrid goalkeeper Bodo Illgner says Cup holders will overcome Juventus and meet Barcelona in the Champions League final. Real were 2-1 down to the Italian champions ahead of the semi-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Liga leaders Barcelona took a huge stride towards the showpiece in Berlin with a 3-0 win over Bayern Munich.
And Illgner, who twice won the tournament with los Blancos, is confident the final this season will see the Clasico clubs go head-tohead. “At home, Real will do it,” he said. “At the Bernabeu they have a power, the atmosphere will be gigantic. “For the whole club, the Champions League has the highest priority. Real will reach the final and will play against Barcelona.”
Illgner
Ancelotti
tells Bale’s agent to stay calm
C
arlo Ancelotti believes Gareth Bale’s agent should have kept his counsel when responding to criticisms of the Real Madrid forward. Bale was derided for his performance in last week’s 2-1 UEFA Champions League semifinal first-leg defeat to Juventus in Turin, with the Welshman having struggled in an unfamiliar centreforward role. The former Tottenham man’s representative, Jonathan Barnett, gave an interview earlier this week where he suggested that part of Bale’s troubles were because his team-mates do not pass the ball to him often enough. However, head coach Ancelotti insists there is no problem between Bale and his fellow Real stars. “I think Gareth Bale has played
a very good season. Last season he scored in important games, he scored in all the finals and with any luck he could do the same this year,” Ancelotti said. “We’re very pleased with the season he’s had so far. Outside of this there’s a wide world where a lot of people speak about things, sometimes they speak too much. “These people have never seen a training session or the harmony in the dressing room. They speak from the outside. Bale has never had a problem with colleagues, and the same with him. They like him and he likes his colleagues. “He’s really happy to stay here, he’s really happy with his teammates. I don’t know fully what the agent said, but it could be better not to speak. Sometimes people speak too much.”
UCL: Benzema fit to battle Juve!
R
Benzema
eal Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Karim Benzema is “100 per cent fit” for today’s UEFA Champions League showdown with Juventus. The France international has been out of action for a month with a knee problem but has been given the green light to make his eagerly-awaited return to action in the semi-final, second-leg clash with the Bianconeri at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, Ancelotti has yet to decide whether to start the striker, with Madrid trailing 2-1 on aggregate after last week’s meeting in Turin. “Benzema is fine,” the Italian told reporters on Tuesday. “He’s 100% fit. “He needed a bit more time to
recover but he’s ready. He could play from the start or he could come on later on. “But Benzema allows us to play a more effective offensive game, with more quality, because he is not a typical striker. “He doesn’t just score goals but also enables his team-mates to play better.” Ancelotti is also hoping that Madrid’s fans get behind their team, with the coach having been left disappointed by the booing of club captain Iker Casillas during Saturday’s Liga draw at home to Valencia. “Everyone feels it when the fans whistle a player or a coach,” the former Chelsea boss stated.
“Casillas has great amount of experience and is used to this kind of thing. It doesn’t affect him; it motivates him even more, I think. “But I think Wednesday it will be different. I think all the Madrid fans understand when it’s an important game. “Many times in the past they’ve really got behind us, like against Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals and last year in the semi-finals against Bayern Munich. I’m sure they’ll get behind us again.” Ancelotti is also of the opinion that Casillas will remain at Madrid this summer, despite being made a scapegoat by certain sections of the Bernabeu crowd.
