ÎÎÎThe screening of ministerial nominees

One of the names expected to be grilled by the distinguished Senators is immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN. A wide section of Nigerians actually believe that the legal luminary should only take a bow and just go get his portfolio. Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial Increasing child abuse in Nigeria By the time anyone reads this editorial, tendency is that a child will be abused in one part of the country or the other. In fact, the increasing child abuse in Nigeria is becoming a social embarrassment and national disgrace. We are very much concerned about this negative phenomenon, which if unchecked, would jeopardise the future of our children and that of the country. What is child abuse? It is defined as the physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or children. It is also any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or guardian that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child. Although child abuse can appear in different forms and the awareness levels of people and their reactions to it may vary, however the importance and extent of this predicament is a global issue. The family is the most important and the original institution of society for bringing up and protecting children. However, this same institution can be the cause of violence, pain and suffering. Today in Nigeria, children are murdered, maimed, assaulted, battered, and even sold. These activities are to the detriment of the child’s physical or mental health, education, moral or social-emotional development. Increasingly, they are employed as child labour, even as many are becoming the family breadwinners. It is common these days to see children below the ages of five and six years hawking wares on busy roads and highways when they should be in school. In the course of this, they are exposed to dangers posed by vehicles and even kidnappers. According to recent survey carried out by the National Population Commission (NPC) in conjunction with UNICEF and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, found a high prevalence of violence against children in Nigeria. Approximately
six out of every 10 Nigerian children experience some form of physical, emotional and sexual violence before the age of 18 years. One in two children experience physical violence, one in four girls and one in 10 boys experience sexual violence, and one in six girls and one in five boys experience emotional violence. Even more alarming is the increasing sexual violence against young girls by those who should be protecting them. Such acts sometimes results in the transmission of venereal diseases and even HIV/AIDS. It bears repeating that all violence against children and especially child maltreatment occurring in the first decade of life is both a problem in itself and a major risk factor for other forms of violence and health problems through a person’s life. Studies have shown that child physical abuse, sexual abuse and other childhood adversities are the cause of excessive smoking, eating disorders, and high-risk sexual behaviour, which are associated with some of the leading causes of death including cancers and cardiovascular disorders. Generally, the exposure of children to violence results in their greater susceptibility to a wide range of lifelong social, emotional and cognitive impairments. We are therefore calling on the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly to enact a comprehensive Child Rights Act to protect the Nigerian child from all forms of abuse. A nation’s future may be measured by how it treats and provides for its children. Therefore, a just, vibrant, and thriving Nigeria is predicated on protecting children from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. What the country needs now is a commitment in addressing the increasing violence against children. To achieve this, we must promote a clear and unequivocal intolerance of all forms of violence against children within society.

ÎÎÎWhen last week Tues-
day, President Muhammadu Buhari called on Britain and Switzerland to speed up the processes of investigation and prosecution of corrupt former Nigerian officials and their accomplices as well as repatriation of the stolen funds, not a few Nigerians were excited. They were not excited because the call portrayed that Nigeria had failed in bringing such corrupt officials to book. Nigerians were also not excited because the call meant that Nigeria had inadvertently outsourced the prosecution of such former officials and others who corruptly enriched themselves
to Britain, Switzerland and other countries of the West. Among the questions that agitated many Nigerians in view of the call were - First: Was President Buhari by the call not asking both countries and others in the West to do Nigeria’s primary job of ensuring that officials who engage in corruption are swiftly investigated, prosecuted and sanctioned appropriately within her jurisdiction? Second: Was the President by the call not showing early signs of helplessness with regards to the fight against corruption as well as the slow pace of corruption cases in Nigeria? Whichever way, the fact is that the call by President Buhari would not have been necessary if Nigeria did a good job in swiftly investigating and prosecut-

ing corrupt officials. If the war against graft were fought in Nigeria as in other countries of the globe, the West in particular, the number of Nigerians who elope with public funds to Britain, Switzerland and other Western countries would have reduced. Fact is that it is Nigeria’s duty to ensure that public officials who tamper with funds in their care are brought to book and that swiftly. When Nigeria fails to do her duty, it becomes easy for her to ask others to do so for her. This is sad and President Buhari, who rode to power promising to fight corruption to a standstill should refrain from giving the impression that the West should take over the task of fighting corruption in Nigeria.

Defamation: Lai Mohammed slams N500m suit against Metuh Titilope Joseph, Lateef Ibrahim Abuja
ÏÏÏThe
spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has accused the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh of defaming his character, thereby slamming a N500 million suit against him. According to Mohammed, Metuh had, in the said release stated that he (Mohammed) embezzled the funds meant for fencing an airport in one of the APC-controlled states in the South-West. He claimed that Metuh also accused him of obtaining money to supply
ambulances to one APCcontrolled state in the SouthWest, but never did so. Metuh had, in the statement, allegedly wondered where Mohammed got the morality right to speak on corruption, when, indeed, the APC spokesman ‘had mastered the art of corruption, having been a personal aide to one of the most corrupt politicians to ever bestride the political space of the country’. But Metuh, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Richard Ihediwa, in Abuja, said, “For the avoidance of doubt, this office wishes to state, categorically, that Chief Olisa Metuh, or any of his lawyers are not aware of any such suit by Lai Mohammed, nor have they been served.”
Ihediwa noted that if it was true that any legal action had been instituted against Metuh, it should not be limited to newspaper reports, unless it is meant for the media, as Metuh is a prominent Nigerian whose office and residential address are well known, adding that, “If, indeed, Lai Mohammed has instituted any case against Chief Metuh, we charge him to ensure that he prosecutes it to the very end.” Mohammed, who said he was a one-time coordinator of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation, claimed that the statement credited to Metuh was carefully calculated to inflict damage on his reputation and to lessen him in the estimation of the public.
He further claimed that Mehuh had injured his character in a grave manner and caused him considerable reputational destruction and embarrassment. He claimed that Metuh’s lawyer, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), had in a letter, dated September 25, 2015, to his lawyer, Wahab Shittu, admitted authorising the statement but denied that it was Mohammed that was being referred to.

of the 36 states of the federation are taking steps to access some $500 million from the World Bank to fast- track development activities in their various domains. Governor of Zamfara state, Hon. Abdulaziz Yari, disclosed this, on Tuesday, after they were briefed by some international and local agencies on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the State House, in Abuja. Yari, who is also chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), said the governors had received as-
surances from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that it was fully ready to fund the country’s economy through efficiently delivery of its mandate. He said: “There are funds from the World Bank which states cannot access because we don’t know how to move forward as a result of lack of expertise. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, has briefed us on how we can access the $500 million in that area. “Secondly, we used to complain of the NNPC, but with the facts we have got today, it is different in the sense that the NNPC is going to be a
different organisation. It is going to fund the economy fully in the sense that there won’t be any question of pipeline damage or stealing of oil. Instead of using the military only, why can’t we use technology to safeguard our pipelines?” He also disclosed that the meeting with the development partners and the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) was at the instance of President Muhammadu Buhari. According to him, eight agencies were scheduled to brief the governors but only three did, for time constraint. He said the other five
would be taken next month on a date to be announced later. The agencies that briefed the governors, on Tuesday, included NNPC, United Nations Population Fund (UNFP) and the World Bank in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health.

Fashola, Amaechi, Ngige face Senate today Continued from page 1 Solomon Dalong, Plateau, Ibe Ibechukwu, Delta, Ahmed Isa Ibeto, Niger and Suleiman Adamu. None of the ministerial nominees is expected to have issues with the Senate given the manner their colleagues were screened on Tuesday. The most controversial nominees such as the former governor of Rivers State, former governor of Lagos and Adebayo Shittu based on initial petitions filed against them are also not expected to
undergo hitches, all of them having submitted their papers detailing their level of competence and experiences in public service to convince the Senate. Earlier, Rotimi Amaechi, who faced the Ethics and Privileges Committee of the Senate in respect of the petition filed against him by the Government of Rivers State had had the petition stood down on the basis that the matter against him was still pending in court. Mrs. Amina Mohammed who appeared before the Sen-
ate Ethics and Privileges on petition filed against her was screened without a fuss on Tuesday by the Senate. On Amaechi’s case, the Committee had alluded to a section of the Senate Rules, which forbids any matter pending in court to be entertained. However, indications are rife that the second batch of ministerial nominees submitted to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari will have to wait till next week to be screened. The Senate President had
earlier in the day read the names to members shortly after he declared the plenary to be in session. The fresh nominees from President Buhari include former first Lady of Yobe State, Khadija Buhar Abba Ibrahim, Claudius Ololeye Daramola, Professor Anthony Anwuka, Geoffrey Onyeama and Brig. Gen MM Dan Ali (rtd). Others include Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Okechukwu Enelamah, Mohammed Bello, and Mustapha Baba Shehuri.
The rest are Ms Aisha Abubakar, Heineken Lokpobiri, Adamu Adamu, Professor Isaac Adewole, Pastor Usani Usani Uguru and Abubakar Bawa Bwari. Meanwhile, 10 of the 21 ministerial nominees earlier submitted to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari were screened by the Senate on Tuesday during its plenary. Some of the nominees were subjected to gruelling moments of drilling, while few of them were accorded special preferences during screening, prompting Senators to chorus to them, “Bow and go”. Former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was the most grilled among the nominees as Senators took close to one hour to engage
him. He, however, gave a good account of himself as he was made to answers many questions bordering on his tenure in Ekiti State as well as on his activities in politics. In all, 10 nominees were screened by the Senate including Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Chief Audu Ogbe, Dr. Christopher Ogbonniah Onu, Dr. Osagie Enahire, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Mrs. Amina Ibrahim Muhammed, Engr. Suleiman Hassaini Adamu and Ibrahim Usman Jibril. My govt’s mission is to tackle graft, rebuild institutions, says Buhari Continued from page 1 a time of monumental challenges. The President, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said: “We are at a time of monumental challenges and tough choices, but also a time of incredible opportunities for achieving competitiveness, inclusive growth and sustainability.’’ Continuing, he said: ‘’We as a government are called upon to make tough choices in exchange control restrictions, altering the absurd recurrent to capital expenditure ratio, reducing the deficit and reducing the overall size of governance. We are called upon to clean up the mess and rebuild the institutions that corruption has ravaged over the years’’
the President submitted. Speaking against the backdrop of the theme of the Summit titled ‘’Tough Choices: Achieving Competitiveness, Inclusive Growth and Sustainability’’, Buhari disclosed that his administration would be built on an economic model which would involve substantial social investment over the next three years. ‘’We are compelled to redress the paradox of high growth figures and widening inequality, rising unemployment and poverty. It is evident that any economic model that leaves nearly half of the citizenry behind requires re-thinking.’’ He added ‘’ this is why our economic model would involve substantial social investments over the next three years’’.
Speaking during the Presidential Policy Dialogue, Osinbajo disclosed that President Buhari had directed him to supervise the nation’s economy, and ensure its sustainable growth and development. He further maintained that what matters most at the moment is the commitment of the present leadership to promote transparent and inclusive growth and ensure sustainable economic development and the overall well-being of Nigerians The Vice president further condemned divisive tendencies and the championing of ethnic agitations by some sections of Nigerians with the active support of the political elites, saying it will certainly deny the nation the needed secured environment for sustainable
growth and development He said: ’’Divisive tendencies and sectional agitations and political talks fuelled by the elite usually advances ethnic interests. The fact about which sectional leader is in charge does not necessarily collate with improvement of the social well-being of the people. Elites are always willing to collaborate when it involves sharing the resources of the state’’. Osinbajo expressed the conviction that with programmes such as the Conditional Cash Transfer and renewed support for MSMEs, government would generate employment, address poverty with the hope that these laudable initiatives will greatly reduce social tension and criminality across the country.
excellence, the right person to talk to is Fashola, whose dynamism in Lagos is believed would help galvanise the much vaunted change of the present administration. Fashola’s impact on Lagos was that of a trail blazer, not yet seen anywhere in the country. While he superintended over Lagos, Fashola re-wrote history, making the state a reference point not only in the country, but in the entire African continent. From roads to hospitals, and even sporting facilities, Fashola made sure to leave no sector untouched. The health facilities also received a major boost under him as he took significant steps in ensuring that the delivery of health services improved drastically. Statistics say about a total number of 161 roads stretching over 147,347km were completed under his watch. In no distant future, Lagos would boast of the much elusive light rail project befitting of a modern mega city that he promised to make of the state upon assumption of office. This is to the credit of the legal luminary. The construction of the first Cable Stayed bridge in West Africa from Ikoyi to Lekki brought a refreshing dimension to the idea of governmental vision and delivery of a beautiful and well designed project. The reinvention of waterways transportation of Lagos clearly showed the trappings of counter-intuitive thinking. The sudden change of Lagos from a city of dirty dingy bus parks, such as Oshodi, Ojota and others to a city with beautiful gardens was the result of detailed planning and decisive actions. The ongoing constructions at the Eko Atlantic City that has created tens of thousands of construction jobs and is billed to eventually create a whole new city from the formerly flood ridden bar beach remain the stuff of legends. The question on Nigerians lips is which of the near comatose ministry would Fashola be assigned to revive when he eventually scales the hurdles of the lawmakers. That is a question only the president can supply answer to. By and large, Nigerians on a large scale are going to witness immense development under Honourable Minister Babatunde Fashola.

Kwara tribunal justifies Saraki, Ibrahim’s elections Kehinde Akinpelu Ilorin
ÏÏÏNational
Assembly Petition Tribunal, sitting in Ilorin, has upheld the election of Dr. Bukola Saraki as a Senator representing Kwara Central, in the Upper Chamber. Chairman of the 3-man tribunal, Justice Josiah Majebi, upheld Saraki’s election on Tuesday, while delivering a judgment in the petition filed by Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP Senatorial candidate had approached the tribunal to challenge the victory of Sen. Saraki in the March 28, 2015 election.
The tribunal also upheld the election of Sen. Rafiu Ibrahim as duly elected to represent Kwara South in the Senate. Arch. Lola Ashiru has filed a petition at the tribunal challenging the victory of Ibrahim. Justice Majebi, in the judgment held that the petitioner has failed to prove the reliefs sought against the first respondent. He declared that the PDP Senatorial candidate has failed to prove that he scored the highest number of credible votes cast in the election. The tribunal chairman also agreed with Saraki’s counsel that the petition was incompetent as it was
filed outside the stipulated 21 days allowed by the Electoral Act 2010. Justice Majebi said the tribunal lacked jurisdiction to hear the petition based on the fact that it was filed out of stipulated time frame. According to him, the tribunal would go ahead to look at the grounds of appeal and merit of the matter. Justice Majebi noted that the oral evidences of four witnesses called by the petitioner failed to prove the case beyond doubt. According to the tribunal chairman, evidences of PW1 and PW2 were mere hearsay as PW 1 failed to identify the polling units where over voting took place, declaring the hearsay
as mere speculative. He said PW III, who was the Forensic expert called by the petitioner, also failed to demonstrate any academic qualification on Forensic Science. Justice Majebi said the PW III did not demonstrate any knowledge relating to election expertise. He held that oral evidences adduced by PW I, PW II and PW III rendered all the documents tendered in evidence useless.

decision of the National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal’s to uphold the election of the former Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji and Sam Onuigbo as the Abia Central Senator and the Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency respectively, were greeted with protest. The aggrieved protesters, who clustered at the School Road end of the court premises, were dissatisfied with the pronouncement of the tribunal and chanted war songs of different types to buttress their annoyance, stressing that the fight
against corruption must continue to save the masses. This brings to six (6) out of the 15 election petitions before the three-man member of the State and National Assembly Tribunal panel 1, sitting in Umuahia so far delivered. It could be recalled that the All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate, Ahamdi Nweke, in the March 28, 2015 senatorial election, had petitioned the tribunal to annul the declaration of Chief Orji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the ground that it
was not in compliance with the electoral law. The petitioner also alleged that the election was characterised by malpractice, alteration, mutilation and inflation of votes in favour of the Respondent. He wanted the tribunal to upturn the election and declare him winner or order a re-run. The tribunal, in its affirmation of Orji’s election, struck out Nweke’s petition for lack of competence, while the tribunal headed by Justice Adeniyi, in its judgment on the petition of Collins Onyeama of APGA against the declaration of Sam Onuigbo of PDP as
winner of the Ikwuano/ Umuahia federal constituency seat, said that “in spite of obvious cases of mutilation and alteration of the result sheet, the petitioners did not make any effort to prove the authenticity of the time and place of making the pink copies which they pleaded”, adding that the tribunal had no option than to rely on the INEC certified true copies. The tribunal also ordered a re-run in 25 polling units in the Arochukwu state constituency following the petition brought by the PDP candidate, Chijioke Okoro, against the election of Luke Onyeani Ukara of APGA.

mourning the demise of the man referred to as the Governor General of the Ijaw nation. Alamieyeseigha, 63, died from a cardiac arrest at a Port Harcourt, Rivers State hospital on Saturday. Former Vice President and
chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar described him as an astute politician who firmly protected the interest of the Ijaw people. The former Vice President in a statement said the announcement of the death of Alamieyeseigha came to him as a rude shock. The Turaki Adamawa eulogized the late Alamieyeseigha for being a worthy ambassador of the Ijaw nation, and for contributing his quota in the service of the nation, and the development CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

Kogi 2015: PDP chieftain decamps to APC Ahead of next month’s elections, the crisis which attended the governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State last month appears to have become intractable, thus threatening the forthcoming polls. This is because the defeated PDP governorship aspirant who lost in his quest to secure the party’s ticket to run for the November election in the state, Alhaji Jibrin Isah aka Echocho has defected to the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) along with his teeming supporters. Over one hundred other PDP chieftains also defected to the APC in a colourful cross-carpetting ceremony that took place at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, the state capital. Akinjide Akintola The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was said to have arrested the immediate past governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, on allegations of graft perpetrated during his tenure as governor. Suswam was detained early Monday afternoon when he arrived at the EFCC headquarters
Ortom in Abuja following an earlier invitation to him on Friday. The flamboyant governor served as governor from 20072015. EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren confirmed Suswam arrest to the media. The EFCC had on Friday invited Suswam for questioning over allegations of corruption during his 8-year rule. The politician who was elected
Suswam on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is expected to defend himself against allegations that he embezzled millions of naira towards the end of his tenure. The EFCC had questioned the immediate past Commissioner of Finance, Mr. Omadachi Oklobia on Friday over allegations of corruption. Following the arrest,a group, Benue Coalition for Justice,
Equity and Fairness had condemned the on-going probe of the former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswan by the Samuel Ortom administration describing it as a witch-hunt. Reacting to the probe panel set up by the state governor to probe Suswam’s administration, the group said it is disheartening that pressing issues of governance have been jettisoned CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

of democratic governance in the country. “No one can dispute the fact that the late Governor General of the Ijaw nation, as he was fondly called, stood firm like a rock in preserving the interest of the Ijaw people is, and was a strong supporter of democratic governance in Nigeria. “The news of the demise of Alamieyeseigha came to me as with many Nigerians as a rude shock. He was a true leader of the Ijaw people, and also contributed his own quota in the development of Bayelsa State when he was governor of the state. “I recall with fond memories the deep appreciation which the late Alamieyeseigha had for democratic governance in Nigeria. Irrespective of the divergent opinions of Nigerians about his
legacies as the governor of Bayelsa State, Alamieyeseigha died earning the respect and admiration of the people of Bayelsa State and, I dare say, the people of Ijaw land. He was a friend and a brother and just like the people of Bayelsa State, I will miss him, too,” Atiku says. ” It was only a few days ago that he came to visit me, and wished me well as I recover from my leg procedure.” Atiku however prays to God to give the Alamieyeseigha family, Bayelsa State and the entire Ijaw people the fortitude to bear the loss. Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark and the governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, also joined other notable Nigerians in condoling with the government and people of Bayelsa State over the demise of the pioneer civilian governor
of the state. Senator Mark in a condolence message signed by his special assistant , Paul Mumeh, lamented the untimely death of Alamieyeseigha whom he described as an astute politician who was a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) . The immediate past Senate President noted that though Alamieyeseigha had not too rosy political career judging from his travails, he nonetheless left an indelible mark as a political colossus . According to Mark ” DSP Alamieyeseigha was a man who identified with his people . He was in more than equal proportion loved by his people . Audu promised that both the new and the old APC members would be given equal opportunities in terms of running the affairs of the party and other long term benefits. Responding on behalf of defectors, Alhaji Echocho reiterated their commitment to move the state to the next level hence the need for their cross-carpeting to APC where their mission would be realised. He said their movement to the APC is for good and assured that their actions would never be regretted as APC’s struggle for positive change in Kogi would be beneficial to all and sundry.

My victory is God’s doing - Prince Dapo Abiodun Hussenat Ohize The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ogun East Senatorial Election, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described his victory at the Election Petition Tribunal, as “God’s doing.” The Tribunal recently nullified the election of Mr. Buruji Kashamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the election. In a press statement signed and issued in Iperu Remo, Ogun State, the business mogul cum politician, also described the success of his petition as a victory for the people of his senatorial district. The statement read in part: “Our people knew the social, political, economic, cultural, and even religious position and marks of our senatorial district in Nigeria. They know the right and befitting candidate that they voted for. My victory at the Tribunal is, therefore, a victory for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District, our party members and coordinators who worked tirelessly.” The APC candidate remarked further that his victory at the Tribunal not only came at the right time, but also saved the Ogun East people from ridicule. He continued, “My victory, though delayed, came at God’s
Abiodun time, which is the best. It was to serve a purpose. God delayed the victory of Joseph in the Bible for the right time, just as He delayed President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory for the right time. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

in the state in preference for a witch-hunt. A statement signed by the National President of Benue Coalition for Justice, Equity and Fairness, Peter Hwande and Secretary General, Ogbole Alechenu said the desperation of those behind the probe was such that they could not wait for the outcome of the panel before hurriedly dragging Suswam to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) even before they have properly articulated their grievances. The statement issued in Abuja said “Governor Ortom would have settled down to the serious business of governance if he
Ortom had genuinely secured the mandate of Benue people and not on the strength of the card reader machine that allocated him and his associates votes in the last elections. “It is clear from the onset that the probe is inconsequential and inconsistent with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and hence the need for Suswam to challenge the action in court. “The fact that the probe cannot withstand judicial scrutiny and the foreknowledge of the impending moral defeat of efforts to persecute Suswam through that ill-conceived agenda was what forced these characters to resort to using the EFCC in the hope of massaging their ego.

“Our victory came at the right time, as it was eagerly expected all over the world. It also removed the tag of ridicule and stain, which our opponent’s false emergence placed on the good, morally upright and hardworking people of Ogun East Senatorial District.” Prince Abiodun, therefore, called on his followers not to lower their guards even as the full text of the judgment is being awaited, urging them to be law-
abiding. “While we await the full text of the judgment of the Tribunal for careful study by my lawyers for a more elaborate response and legal advice, I want to call on all our party men and women, friends and well-wishers, in fact, the general public in Ogun East Senatorial District in particular, and Ogun State in general, not to lower our guards in our just and selfless march to entrench people’s participatory democracy in which the votes of our people

It pointed out that while it was aware that Benue people are interested in a probe, “they were not asking for a selective probe panel that will canonize the devil himself and criminalize angels just to satisfy the drunken ego of a few in the society. “It will be good to note that those who pride themselves as change agents and instituting the petitions are characters that took active part in the administration of Benue State in the last 16 years directly or indirectly and cannot at the same time become judges in their own cases. “We think the probe is additionally a ploy to grant them un-

the immediate family, people of Bayelsa state, the Ijaw nation and Nigerians at large for the sad loss, saying “he played his part with great passion and commitment”. Senator Mark noted that although Alamieyeseigha had a brief stint as a governor, his legacies cannot be diminished, point-
Atiku ing out that he laid the foundation upon which succeessive administrations in the state built on. Delta State Governor, Okowa, commiserated with the Alamieyeseigha family, Government and people of Bayelsa State as well as the Ijaw Nation, at large, over the sudden death of the first civilian Governor of the State.
Alamieyeseigha Governor Okowa in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu described Alamieyeseigha’s exit as shocking and painful. “The late Alamieyeseigha was loved by the ijaws who saw him as a rallying spot for the reawakening of the spirit of togetherness irrespective of the spread of the
Ijaws in all riverine areas of the country. No wonder they nicknamed him ‘Governor General of the Ijaw nation,” Okowa noted. Okowa extolled what he called the humility of the late Alamieyeseigha which enabled him to mentor up-coming politicians culminating in his Deputy Governor, Goodluck Jonathan, rising to
become a former Nigeria’s president. While praying God to grant the late Alamieyeseigha eternal rest, Okowa enjoined the family, government of Bayelsa state and the Ijaws in general to immortalise his memory by ensuring that the Ijaws remain united and speak with one voice, at all times.
The problem with Adamawa ruling elites Something is definitely wrong with the Ruling Elites in Adamawa State. Otherwise, how can one explain the abject poverty and despondency in most communities in the state with little or no elite support to the communities while the same elites spend millions of naira in legal fees and media propa-
Jubrilla
ganda to antagonize virtually every elected government in the state? This is really worrisome. If even a small percentage of the amounts spent by our ruling elite in fighting media wars, legal wars and political wars like impeachments were spent on our communities, life would not as bad as it is today for most our
citizens especially in our rural areas and urban slums. Governor Boni Haruna had a running battle with the elites when he held sway as governor of the state. Millions of naira was spent in legal fees, media war and several impeachment threats against him. In the end, he barely survived all the sinister plots and conspiracies. However, in the process, he lost a lot of steam and in some instances even the focus and direction of governance. Meanwhile, the helpless and often hapless citizens became the losers. His government could not effectively concentrate on its core mandate and as such ended up really not doing much to uplift the state to the level expected. The same elite that hounded Governor Haruna ganged up to launch attacks on Admiral Murtala Nyako as the Governor of the state. Shortly after Nyako assumed power, they again teamed up against him and almost rendered the state ungovernable. Millions of naira
was again spent in ceaseless media wars, spirited legal battles and an impeachment process that surpassed all in terms of money spent to achieve the goal. In the end, the state witnessed the greatest instability in the history of any political unit in Nigeria with 7 Governors presiding over the affairs of the state in eitght years. It left the state heavily indebted, unstable and bruised to the point of being prostate. In the process no one gave a thought to the plight of the citizens. Now it appears the Adamawa elites are back to the drawing board, formulating what could be a new vista of war with the government of Senator Muhammad Umar Jibrilla. Already some cases are in court seeking to nullify his election through the back door since his fellow contestants in the last election did not go to the tribunal to challenge the validity of his election. So much money is already being spent in the vain process of truncating the regime through
a legal process instituted by people who have no stake in such matters except as glorified spoilers. We have also started seeing the media war in the sponsorship of a false news reports in both the social media and conventional media. One of such ungodly reports claimed that the People of Mubi, the governor’s own hometown had barred him from visiting home. They did not take into cognisance that His Excellency just approved the construction and refurbishment of 14 Roads in Mubi in order to reposition Mubi area back to its economic relevance in the State. Mubi has always been the commercial nerve centre of Adamawa State and the governor as a private sector person with thriving businesses in Mubi knows that more than anyone else. He has also ordered the completion of an ATV Boaster Station in Mubi and visited the Water Treatment Plant in the town with a view to putting it back to shape among many initiatives for the Town.

FG receives final EU report on 2015 polls ...Pledges to revisit independent candidacy

President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said the Buhari administration would guarantee free and fair elections in the country. He also pledged that though the recommendation on independent candidacy was deliberated upon by the National Assembly and rejected prior to the 2015 polls, the issue could be re-opened following the recommendation by the EU. Osinbajo made the assertion when he received on behalf of the Federal Gov-
ernment, the report of the European Union Observer Mission to the 2015 general election in the country. A statement from the media office of the Vice President said a delegation of the EU led by the Chief Observer, Mr. Santiago Fisas, submitted the report to him at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He said: “It is our duty to ensure that the electoral system guarantees free and fair elections, where the opposition can win if voted for by the people.” According to the state-
ment, the Vice President, while thanking the EU for participating actively throughout the electoral process of the country before, during and after the polls, and making useful recommendations that could improve the process, gave the assurance that the Federal Government would study and consider the recommendations as soon as possible. He stated that while some of the recommendations required action by the National Assembly, the executive arm of government would
consider the ones within its powers for immediate implementation. He recalled that he had been active in election litigations and some of the EU recommendations on time limits for electoral petitions had been of concern, saying specifically that regarding the timing “there are huge questions around that.” The EU observer team in its report recommended among others that the Independent National Electoral Commission should be strengthened to tackle complex electoral challeng-

Senate screens Fashola, Amaechi, Ngige others today Continued from page 6 and Dr. Ehanire, while they apparently softened the ground for Senator Udoma, Ogbeh, Lai Mohammed and Mrs. Mohammed, who after brief presentations were asked to ‘bow and go’. First to face the screening hurdle was Senator Udoma who expressed surprise that President Buhari deemed it necessary to propose him for appointment in his cabinet. He told the Senators that having garnered experiences in politics and service in the private and public sectors, he will be more prepared to assist in delivering the agenda of the government of President Buhari in changing Ni-
geria. He expressed delight that he had served in the Senate in many capacities, more so as its one-time Appropriation Committee Chairman, from where he said he proceeded into other government services, mostly in the Security and Exchange Commission. He said if appointed as Minister, he will hit the ground running, counting on the experiences he had acquired in the private, public sectors as well as in politics. Fayemi, who went through a long moment of grilling, was made to give account of his stewardship as former governor of Ekiti State as he debunked reports that he left the state with a huge debt.
He said when he became the governor, he met a debt of N30 billion, while the monthly allocation due to the state was not more than N3 billion all through, a reason he said he took to the capital market to raise a bond of only N25 billion to execute projects by his government. Fayemi said before leaving office, he cleared the N30 billion debt, while leaving behind the debt of only N18.5 billion. He told the Senators that he never used part of the money his government borrowed on payment of salaries, but deployed all on infrastructural development. Former National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu
Ogbe commanded the interest of Senators who softened the ground for him during screening. Ogbe when allowed to speak advised that for Nigeria to get out of economic doldrums, it should begin to focus more attention on Agriculture and Education. He said the Nigerian government will need to go back to the drawing board to lay a comprehensive programme on agriculture with the aim of generating more employment opportunities and attaining food security with deployment of modern farming system. He was asked to also bow and go after a brief presentation.

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has called on members of the public to avoid panic buying of petroleum products, especially premium motor spirit (petrol), as there is enough stock of the product to keep the entire country wet for 23 days. A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday and signed Group General Manager Public Affairs, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, relayed the corporation’s assurances against the backdrop of emerging queues noticed at some filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, arising from rumours of impending scarcity. It further explained that besides the recent meeting of the Management of the Corporation with members of the Major Oil
Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA) to rally them for the uninterrupted fuel supply policy of the administration, it has set up a monitoring team at the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) to check sharp practices that could breach the distribution and supply system. Meanwhile the NNPC has debunked reports in some social media of a purported reduction in current pump price of petrol from N87 per Litre to N57. Describing the report as false, the Corporation advised members of the public to ignore such tales noting that the price of petrol remains N87 per litre. Addressing downstream stakeholders at a meeting, the Group Managing Director of the corporation.

suspected Islamic fundamentalists were killed on Tuesday in Okene, near Lokoja in Kogi State during a bloody encounter between an Islamic sect and men of the Nigerian Army. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt in Lokoja that soldiers, acting on information, stormed a mosque located on Inike Street in Okene to dislodge the sect members. Reports said that some soldiers also sustained serious injuries and had been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja for treatment. NAN learnt that soldiers decided to act after obtaining information that the fundamentalists were using the mosque to hide guns and other sophisticated weapons.
The soldiers were said to have obtained useful information from two members of the sect, who were arrested during a gun attack at the Lokoja office of the State Security Service, SSS, on September 25. As at the time of this report, Inike Street was said to be calm, but residents refused to come out of their houses because of fear. The Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Police Command, William Aya, said the operation was “a pure military affair”. He gave no further details on the incident. Efforts to get the reaction of the commander of the Nigerian Army Command in Lokoja proved abortive.

UNHCR condemns deadly attacks in Chad

U.N. refugee agency condemns two suicide attacks by Nigeria’s militant Boko Haram group in Western Chad over the weekend, killing and maiming scores of people, among them internally displaced people. Suicide bombers, including
three women and two teenage boys, attacked a fish market Saturday in the Chadian town of Baga Sola and the Kousseri site for internally displaced people on the outskirts of the city. The attacks left 47 dead and wounded dozens of others. Nearly half of the dead
were from the displaced peoples’ camp. “In recent weeks and months the government has encouraged people to move away from the islands in Lake Chad as it gears up for an offensive against Boko Haram. And so, tens of thousands
have moved from their homes, and they have been displaced and they find it very difficult to cope,” he said. A new 8,700-member regional force has been set up in Chad to tackle militant Boko Haram Islamists. It has not yet started operations. In recent weeks, Dobbs said the UNHCR has stepped up assistance to the 60,000 internally displaced people who normally live on islands in the lake. “Their lives have been disrupted by the increasing violence that has spread from Nigeria into neighboring countries. These people are living in desperate conditions. They lack livelihoods. They lack shelter. They lack food. They lack health care,” he said. The UNHCR is one of several agencies that work in the Dar es Salam refugee camp, 10 kilometers from Baga Sola. Dobbs said all aid workers and more than 7,000 refugees in the camp from Nigeria and Niger were safe. But he said travel to and within the Lake Chad region has been suspended and U.N. flights were on standby to transport people out of the area or bring in emergency supplies.
Main opposition leader accuses Ugandan police of brutality
ÏÏÏUganda’s
main opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, has accused President Yoweri Museveni of instigating violence against the opposition ahead of the 2016 presidential election. This comes after Ugandan police over the weekend manhandled Dr. Besigye and his entourage while they were en route to Rukungiri District, about 400 kilometers from Kampala for a Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) rally. A female member of Dr. Besigye’s entourage who is shadow secretary for environment was stripped naked in public, tied up and thrown in the back of a pickup truck. The police said they were simply enforcing the guidelines of the
National Independent Electoral Commission. A spokesman was quoted in the local media as saying Dr. Besigye was only a candidate whose nomination has not yet been endorsed by his party and therefore could not hold public rallies. Dr. Besigye said there’s no law in Uganda that bars him, as a political leader from holding public rallies. “The statement of the Inspector General of police was quite obviously not based on any law because political parties according to our laws are allowed to hold public meetings of the type that we were to hold. Secondly, I am a leader in a political party, a party which has legitimate functions of
holding public meetings. My role in the political party is not suspended because I am a candidate,” he said. Besigye said Ugandan police have a record of brutalizing women as a way of discouraging them from becoming political activists. “You know that the Ugandan police have behaved in this manner especially toward women, and I think the intension is quite clear. It is not just to intimidate and harass the particular lady involved but it is intended to send a chill down the spines of our women to make sure that they do not attempt to become political activists, but also to cause fear in the general population,” Besigye said. has begun the task of selecting for resettlement 12,000 refugees from the crisis in Syria. The first group is expected to arrive before late December. Sydney’s Lakemba district is one of Australia’s most multicultural areas. It has become a haven for a family from the Syrian city Homs, which fled to Lebanon before arriving as refugees in Australia at the start of the year. Youssef al-Kasseh lives with his wife, Hala, and their three chil-
dren, along with his mother in a small rented house. Speaking through a translator, he said the horrors of what they left behind are always in their thoughts. “Life in Homs is very, very bad and no matter how hard I try to explain, it is very hard," said Youssef. "There is killing all the time, people getting taken away, while they have been taken away, they have been killed.” Youssef said he was detained
and tortured by government officials. “I was taken away and suffered a lot, hit a lot, and suffered not only physically, but also the mental trauma. I have a lot of family and friends that have died,” he said. His wife Hala is happy to be in Australia, but she also worries about those left behind. “I have a lot of friends and family in Syria, and I am very, very afraid of how they are living.

Rallies urging Australia to take in more of those fleeing the conflict in Syria have been held across the country. More than half of the 12,000 refugees will be resettled in New South Wales, the nation’s most populous state. Displaced women, children and families living in camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey will be given priority. Coordinating plans for their arrival is Professor Peter Shergold, an academic and businessman.
Rocket attack hits Russian Embassy in Syria

fired rockets at Russia's Embassy in Damascus in what Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called an act of terror meant to intimidate those who support the fight against Islamic State militants. The two rockets struck the embassy compound Tuesday as hundreds of people rallied outside in support of Russia's two-week-old military campaign in Syria. There was no immediate report of casualties. The attack is not the only backlash against Russia. Russian security officials said Monday they had arrested several people plotting to target the Moscow transportation system who had ties to the Islamic State group. Also, in an audio recording released later Monday, Abu Mohamed al-Jolani, the head of Syria's al-Qaida affiliate, Al-Nusra Front, urged militants in the Caucasus to counter Moscow's air campaign by targeting Russians.
New DR Congo attacks blamed on Uganda rebels

Monday in three separate attacks blamed on Ugandan rebels in the troubled east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities said. The gun attacks happened within two hours of each other in the restive north of North Kivu province, from which many locals have been evacuated after a string of massacres blamed on the Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). "We recorded six deaths yesterday," Amisi Kalonda, the administrator of the Beni area told AFP from the provincial capital Goma, blaming the ADF for the killings. "Four civilians were killed at Tenambo, one at Mukoko and another at Linzo-Sisene," he added. Army spokesman Lieutenant Mak Hazukay confirmed the shootings and also said the rebels were responsible. The mainly-Muslim ADF are accused of slaughtering more than 400 villagers over the past year around Beni, mostly with machetes. The group has been active in the region, which has been devastated by more than two decades of strife, since its fighters were driven out of their homeland in 1995. In recent weeks they have switched to gun attacks mostly concentrated along National Road No. 4 which links Beni with Orientale province to the north, targeting drivers and passersby.

NIMASA said that there
was no such contract in the first place, adding that, “what Jauro said and which should be put on record is that Global West Vessel Specialists Limited (GWVSL) has an existing Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with NIMASA, which involves procuring, bunkering and operating platforms on behalf of NIMASA on a Supply, Operate and Transfer

According to Jauro, the vessels, which ownership would revert to NIMASA after the contract period, are manned by officials of NIMASA and personnel of the Nigerian Navy for the enforcement of the agency’s mandate.
“This is not the same thing with a maritime security contract as many publications had alleged. It is, therefore, mischievous for anyone to allude that the Director-General of NIMASA has defended a maritime security contract being executed by Tompolo on behalf of the agency,” NIMASA said. Ibas also re-echoed this position at the same event.

Abolish tax for expectant mothers, legislators tell Ugwuanyi Moses Oyediran Enugu
ÏÏÏMembers of the Enu-
gu State House of Assembly have urged the executive to abolish forthwith the showing of evidence of tax payment as a precondition for accessing the Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Programme in all the stateowned health facilities. The programme was introduced, in 2007, to enable expectant mothers and children, under the age of five, to access free medical care to help maternal and child mortality. Moving a motion on notice tagged Motion No. HM/05/15 on the floor of the House Tuesday, member representing Isi-Uzo Constituency, Hon. Daniel Chukwuemeka Ogbuabor, supported by twelve others submitted that the programme should be made completely free without attaching any conditions,
such as the evidence of tax payment. Ogbuabor, who is the Committee on Health, argued that to attach a precondition would make the laudable programme a nullity and lamented that the pogramme was collapsing as a result of the attached condition. Said he: “The greatest impediment to the Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Programme is the provision of tax payment as condition precedent for benefiting from the free care programme. This requirement was introduced in 2011 as proof of residency in the state. The 2014 State Council on Health observed that introduction of this requirement, the free care programme has been progressively collapsing. Truly, in my constituency, the programme has collapsed.” After a robust debate on the motion, the House resolved as follows: “That this
Honourable House do urge His Excellency, the Governor to abolish forthwith evidence of tax payment as condition precedent for benefiting from Enugu State Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Programme in all the state-owned health facilities. That this Honourable House do urge His Excellency, the Governor, to direct the Hon. Commissioner for Health to adopt, forthwith, alternative contrivance or combination of contrivances other than “evidence of tax payment” to establish residency status of clients seeking to benefit from Enugu State Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Programme.” In as much as the members were not canvassing paying of tax to augment the government revenue base, they posited that as a programme meant for the poor and the rich, alike, no condition should be attached to it.
Objections to the motion by Hon. Chinedu Nwamba of Nsukka East and Hon. Chuka Ene of Udi South that payment of tax was important, because of paucity of revenue accruing to the state, fell on deaf ears as his colleagues voted overwhelmingly in favour. Speaker, Edward Ubosi, thanked the movers of the motion saying that because of the importance and relevance of the programme, “there is no way this kind of motion will die in the House.” He urged member to bring similar motions of importance for deliberation on the floor of the House.

gerians benefited from the free health services organised recently by the Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS prevention (RFHA) of Rotary International. The free health services, which ended at the weekend, included HIV testing, family counseling, diabetes and hypertension screening and education, breast and cervical cancers screening, polio immunisation, malaria testing and provision of long lasting insecticides nets, condom distribution, eye and dental checks, among others. The tribunal noted that the petitioner failed to prove allegations of irregularities, non-compliance with the electoral act and other allegations in the petition beyond reasonable doubt and therefore dismissed the petition for lacking in merit. Meanwhile, the tribunal in another judgement also dismissed the petition filed by the Labour Party senatorial candidate in the election for Ebonyi North, Mr. Peter Ogeali, a former member of the House of Representatives, challenging the election of a former Governor of the state, Dr. Sam Egwu of the PDP.

The agenda, according to Olowu, was to develop a strong public/private partnership programme in response to the needs of people, which was in view of Africa’s high mortality rate from either infectious diseases or non-communicable diseases.

Afenifere, Arewa and Fulani herdsmen
T Jude Ndukwe
he criminal activities of Fulani herdsmen in the South-West which culminated in the sad kidnap and torture of elder statesman, and a leader of the Yoruba, Chief Olu Falae made the Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere to issue a strongly worded warning to the Fulani herdsmen. As was always the stock in trade of the Arewa Consultative Forum, a counter warning was issued to Afenifere, upbraiding the group for the communiqué it issued shortly after Olu Falae regained his freedom from the the suspected Fulani herdsmen who kidnapped him wherein the Yoruba group stated that “If the federal government fails to stop Fulani herdsmen from attacking Yoruba people, it may result in a situation where the South-West people will have to defend themselves.” The ACF has picked on this statement, to justify its desperate attempt at defending and covering up criminal elements of the Fulani descent. For the avoidance of doubt and from the quote, Afenifere was clear as to who their warnings were directed at. An honest analysis of the state-
ment simply implies that Afenifere never and I do not think that such a respectable group will ever condescend so low as to criminalise a whole region, tribe or race as the ACF would want us to believe. Those affected by Afenifere’s admonition are clearly stated: the Fulani herdsmen who attack Yoruba people. This antic of the ACF is agelong. It is the same antic they use to try to cow other regions into doing their biddings and a way of always having their way in all matters concerning the nation. Rather than face the more urgent and criminal issue of the wanton attacks perpetrated by their kinsmen, they prefer to pander to the gallery. They have always behaved like a heady headmaster who goes about dishing instructions to his pupils who must obey without hesitation. This stupid mindset must stop! It is this same antic they used to silence the leaders of NorthCentral where the reprehensible criminal activities of these Fulani herdsmen have since assumed a brazen proportion. One wonders why, in spite of the incessant killings, maiming and raping of innocent people including women and children, the Arewa has found
it convenient to look on as if the lives of the victims do not matter. No region or tribe can or should intimidate the other! It is this same antic that has been used to cow our security agencies which appear powerless while the killings take place in the North central on a regular basis. If not, one wonders why a Fulani herdsman would be allowed to move about freely with dangerous weapons including machetes, swords and even AK 47s without being challenged by security personnel? Are there two different laws for the handling of weapons and firearms in Nigeria, one for Fulani herdsmen and other for the rest of us? What would happen if a man dressed in Igbo or Yoruba attire moves about with an AK 47 rifle in Lagos, Enugu or Kano? Would such person not be promptly arrested and charged for illegal possession of firearm or for endangering public safety? According to recent reports, residents of Enugu, South-East Nigeria, have also raised alarm over the destructive activities of these herdsmen. Rather the ACF to call their herdsmen to order and urge them to respect the rights of their hosts, they are busy sounding tough for vain purposes.
It would be a mistake if anyone thinks what the Afenifere sets out to achieve is to demonise any particular race, region or tribe. Those in focus are Fulani herdsmen who attack people with reckless abandon. It is good to make this distinction because among the Fulani are lawyers, doctors, engineers etc who have made their marks in their different professions. Therefore, it is even more criminal to categorise all Fulani as herdsmen as ACF has attempted to do while denigrating the Afenifere communiqué. What we ask for is mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among all peoples of Nigeria. A situation where a group raids other peoples’ farms and destroys their crops without let or hindrance leaving behind trails of blood and sorrow is no longer acceptable. While we call on the security agencies to be brave and perform their duties without fear or favour, let it be stated that the usual antics of the ACF to cow other regions the way they have succeeded in emasculating leaders of NorthCentral has failed, and the warning of Afenifere should be heeded to forthwith as to do otherwise could degenerate into an unwanted state of mass retribution for the criminal Fulani herdsmen.
President Buhari has recycled ‘Noise makers’
T
Prof Femi Ajayi
he media assumptions on the tardy ministers appointments that Senate President got 21 nominees; Nigerian President held up 15 nominees; and the Senate got fresh 11 nominees came to an end on Wednesday, September 30, 2015; even though some skeptics believed it was an empty brown envelope submitted to the Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki. The list finally revealed the ‘Noisemakers’, as most of them are reprocessed. The anticipated expectation was to have new broom to sweep the debris in the community, along the vision of President Buhari, prompting his body language to provide adequate services for Nigerians. Why the long wait for Buhari’s ‘Noise Makers’? According to The Sun Newspapers, Wednesday, September 16, 2015, defending his delayed announcement of the Ministers, Buhari declared, “The civil service provides the continuity, the technocrat. In any case, they are the people who do most of the work. The ministers are there, I think, to make a lot of noise, for the politicians to make a lot of noise”. In some occasions, Buhari could be politically ingenuous in his choice of words, understanding how democ-
racy works, regardless what the constitution says. According to Buhari, Ministers are mere ‘Noise Makers’; which he has demonstrated since May 29, 2015; for the Civil Servants to continue doing the work if the Constitution allows. Civil Servants and Technocrats across the universe are the strength of governance. However, Nigerian ministers ought to have the charisma to sell government policies to the public. Nevertheless, Buhari could be naïve in wanting to convert civil servants and technocrats to politicians by his late announcement of the partial list of his Ministers. It will be an act of negligence for the government to make civil servants accountable for selling government policies to the public. In Buhari’s opinion, the Constitution is wrong in making provision for the ministers, the political officials, to engage in policy decision-making, allocating national resources to communities, groups and the general populace, to ensure the legal apportionment of society values or resources, not necessarily noise making responsibilities. Whereas civil servants on the other hand ought to be pre-occupied with policy executions. Possibly Buhari’s choice of christening them ‘Noisemakers’, could be the yardstick to measure
their competences, depending on how much noise they could make in their duties and responsibilities. Should they be addressed Honorable Noisemakers as part of the changes Nigerians craved for? Buhari definitely knows his game plan by delaying the appointments of the ministers till September 30, 2015. The delay could be part of the scripts to get rid of Olubukola Saraki as the Senate President, just like Buhari’s ‘party’ threw Olushola Saraki out of his Senate leadership position in 1983; and in 2015 Buhari’s party wants to throw out Bukola Saraki out of his Senate President position. We hope that the list submitted to the Senate is not being used as bait for the Senate confirmation of the ministers and bounced back on Saraki again; hence, the short-lived Buhari’s honeymoon could be over like a hot coffee placed in the freezer. Unfortunately, surprises are awaiting the country on the outcome of the premeditated Senate issue. Most Nigerians were shocked for the release of the anticipated Buhari’s ‘Noise Makers’, with some recycled politicians, which is like putting old wine in a new bottle. It does not demonstrate the change Nigerians envisioned. There is no room for the administration to give excuses about the handing over note which was given
four days to the inauguration; it could mean that Buhari’s twelve years’ preparation to be Nigerian President was a hoax. Buhari could have penciled down that would occupy at least the major important positions. The expectation was to introduce new blood and better ways of running government when the screening of ministerial nominees commences today, October 13, 2015. It is highly imperative for the Senate to redeem itself of fighting corruption, earn the trust of the public, impersonal in the exercise, make the criterion for screening public, muster the courage to reject incompetent and morally bankrupt nominee. We expect the Senate to match qualifications, skills, and qualities of the nominees with their respective assignments; whether they are capable, or qualified for the assignments, not the cosmetic ancient screening of ‘take a bow and exit’, which is bad for democracy. Would the nomineesdeclare their assets; as required by Section 120 of the Standing Rules of the Nigeria Senate, which indicates that “…the Senate shall not consider the nomination of any person, who has held any public office as contained in Part Two of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution prior to his nomination, unless, there is a written evidence that he has declared his assets and liabilities

Proposed airport: Fayose pays N150m compensation to property owners Gbenga Sodeinde
Ado Ekiti ÏÏÏThe Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has paid N150 million as compensation to the people whose property would be affected by the construction of a new Oja Oba Market in Ado-Ekiti. He consequently anounced that he had set a 14-month deadline for the construction of the market, adding that the demolition of the old market and the construction of new one would start on November 8, this year. All that as prelude to the construction of an airport. Spokespersons of the ag-
grieved landowners at the proposed airport site off Ado-Ijan road, who were from Ijan, Igbemo, Igbogun, Aso Ayegunle and Bolorunduro , Mr. Tijani Famuyibo and Mr. Olusola Falonniyii, had appealed to Fayose to give them some time, so that they could harvest their crops. While meeting with the aggrieved landowner at the proposed airport site, 9on Monday, Fayose agreed to discontinue further destruction of food and cash crops, until after harvest time. He also disclosed that the remaining sum of N5.4 million compensation to those
affected by the dualisation of Awedele Road in AdoEkiti would be paid this week. Fayose’s Chief of Staff and Chairman, State Implementation Committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Chief Dipo Anisulowo, appealed to the Federal Government for prompt release of N1.2 billion funding for the 2014 edition of the programme. The Commissioner for Works, Mr. Kayode Oso, had, while briefing newsmen on road construction, said Fayose would complete the airport and a multi-billion fly-over, in Ado Ekiti, before the expiration of his tenure
in 2018. Oso said many major roads, within the capital city, like the Matthew Street, Irode road, Onala-Tinuola, Petim road, Federal Housing road and many others, in spite of the lean financial situation of the state, promising that other towns would benefit in the next phase. Anisulowo said the government had paid a sum of N225 million to 2,250 females engaged under the first phase of the Conditional Cash Transfer, adding that 9,000 units of antenatal kits, valued at the cost of N40 million, had been distributed free to pregnant women in the state.

Abuja ÏÏÏA The Rivers State National Assembly tribunal panel, sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed the petition filed by Mr. Magnus Abe of All Progressives Congress (APC) and upheld the election of Senator Olaka Johnson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Rivers SouthEast Senatorial District. Abe and the APC had challenged Johnson’s election alleging that election did not hold in Rivers SouthEast Senatorial District. Justice Mohammed Sifawa, who read the judgment, said the petitioners – Magnus Abe and APC – failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt their allegation that there was no election at the senatorial district on March
28,2015 when the National Assembly election was held across the country. The tribunal said that after a thorough examination of all evidences, exhibits and the testimonies of witnesses it found that election actually took place in the senatorial district. Instead of proving their allegations Abe went out of his way by blowing hot and cold at the same time on the election issue. According to the tribunal chairman, in one breath, the petitioner claimed that there was no election in the senatorial district and in another breath, the same petitioner tendered documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on how election materials were shared on the election day.

Justice Sifawa said that it was wrong, in law, for the petitioner to be speaking from both sides of his mouth as he tendered documents from election he claimed never held. The tribunal said the petitioner failed to call at least one witness from the over 1,400 polling units in his senatorial district to substantiate his allegation that there was no election. It also noted that the few witnesses called by the petitioner to prove his allegation missed the target in their evidence by emphasising on non-relevant issues. “From the totality of evidence before this tribunal, we are convinced that the petitioner did not do the needful as he failed to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, his sole allegation that election did
not hold in his constituency in the March 28 National Assembly Election”. “It must also be stated here that the petitioner knows that the onus to prove his allegation rested on his shoulder but for unknown reasons refused to discharge the onus as required by law. “By his failure to establish a prima facie case, that there was no election in his constituency, this tribunal has no option than to disregard his allegation in his entirety.

Wild jubilation in Ekiti as Senate clears Fayemi Gbenga Sodeinde
Ado Ekiti ÏÏÏThere was wild jubilation in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, and other communities, on Tuesday, as people trooped out en masse to celebrate as the Senate confirmed former governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Friday Atufe Nigerian Investment Promotion Comission (NIPC) has advocated the need for building a national concensus that would promote investment in the country through foreign direct investment and private sector funding against the backdrop of dwindling oil revenue arising from the falling oil price. Mr. Amos Sakaba, director Investment Facilitation & Incentive Administration of NIPC disclosed this at an interactive session with journalists organised by Olisa Agbakoba Legal (AOL) and the NIPC in Lagos yesterday, adding that the private sector must be assisted to grow. The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission is a federal government agency in Nigeria established to encourage, promote, and coordinate investments in Nigeria. The agency provides services for the grant of business entry permits, licenses, authorizations and incentives in a One-Stop-Shop environment. The services are provided in a co-ordinated, streamlined, efficient and transparent manner to meet the needs of investors. Sakaba aid since the administration of President Buhari came into office, the commission is being inundated by foreign investors about enquiries on how to invest in the economy. The director observed that there was the need to streamline the country’s legal and institutional framework in a bid to make the private as the driver
NIPC advocates national concensus for investment promotion of the economy, adding that with the drop in revenue, federal government no longer has money to execute capital projects and now had to rely on foreign direct investment (FDI) and private investment. Sakaba said if the country could develop a consolidated economic that recognised the private sectors as the main driver of the economy, all the economic challenges confronting the country would sorted themselves. Also speaking, Dr. Wilfred Mamah, a partner with AOL observed that Nigeria’s potential as an investment hub in Africa is very high but remained largely untapped, adding that the country has been variously described as the number one frontier- market economy in terms of possibility of attracting the most attention from European and American multinationals. He said the encouraging narratives of promise has paled into insignificance in the light of Nigeria’s extremely poor ranking of 146th out of 189 countries in the 2014 World Bank’s “ Ease of Doing Business Index” and 170th
outbof 186 contries in the Bank’s 2015 “Going Beyond Efficiency Report.” The partner noted that against this backdrop it has become very necessary to reform, realign and streamline policy in the direction of economic diversification towards non-oil sectors that are capabke of shoring the country’s GDP on a sustainable basis. He said the develooment has become imperative because of the current crisis that Nugeria found itslef in the wake of growing unemployment, tumbling oil prices and the resultant sharp drop in revenues. He explained that “Also critical is the need to emphasuze on the role of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and private capitalin funding Nigeria’s development plans, including the change agenda that is unfolding,” adding that this has become even compelling given the dwindling revenue positionn that cannot match the increasing pressures to provide public funding for such critical strategic plans of the federal government. He noted that there is no doubt
that foreign and domestic direct investment remained critical in supporting and facilitating the realisation of the lofty objectives of moving the country forward. Mamah explained that the role of private, foreign and local caoutal could not be over emphasized in the light of President Buhari’s commitment to diversify the economy, remarking that there is therefore the need to examine the character and status of Nigeria’s business climate with a view to determining the competitiveness in attracting and sustaining investments in the country. He said the current challenges in the economy required major reforms in the investment climate of Nigeria and it is against this background that Messrs Olisa Agbakoba Legal have foundut necessary to contribute to current efforts to give Nigeria a new lease of economic life by promoting and organising an interactive media chat on the need to shore up Nigeria’s business climate and enhance its competitiveness in support of President Buhari’s Economic Diversification Programme.
One of the greatest problems confronting agricultural productivity in the country is the lack of industries to process raw materials to finished products. That’s the reason why Africans export raw cocoa and import chocolates, coffee and creams in return. The irony is that the raw materials are exported cheaply, while the finished products are imported at exorbitant prices. No doubt, Africa needs industries to effectively deal with the annoying international market imbalance. There are few processing industries sparsely planted in some countries but their utmost performance is marred by poor electricity and bad roads. These two deficiencies have multifarious effects on the private sector, economy and the population in general. As such, Africa needs about N100 billion yearly to address its infrastructural challenges, the President, African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, has said. Adesina, who spoke in Lima, Peru, at a $90 million financing arrangement for an airport project in Egypt, drawn from the Africa Growing Together Fund (AGTF), said the amount of resources in Africa to deal with that is about N50 billion a year. “So there is gap,” he said, adding that a new Africa Delivery Vehicle called Africa 50 has being inaugurated to help raise funds to close the gap. The AfDB chief emphasized that power was critical to achieving economic growth in the continent, stressing that the absence of power infrastructure would leave the sub-region underdeveloped. “There is no way Africa can move to the top of the global economy value chain without power. That is why we have developed a new energy initiative for Africa 2025. Africa is tired of being in the dark and I am optimistic that most of our development challenges would be addressed, if there is sufficient power to run the economies,” Adesina said. He added that countries at the peak of the global economic pyramid “are those that are competitive and are at the top of the value chain.” The AfDB president said “Africa does not belong to the bottom of this value chain”.

Nigeria loses $966m to crude oil swap deal — NEITI The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) on Friday said the Federal Government lost $966m in revenue from the crude oil swap deal between 2009 and 2012. NEITI’s Communications Director Orji Ogbonnaya-Orji, made the disclosure in Lagos at a forum on subsidy organised by Media for Oil Reform in collaboration with School of Media Communication, Pan Atlantic University. Crude Oil Swap is an arrangement by the Federal Government whereby the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation supervises the trading of the nation’s crude oil for refined products. Ogbonnaya-Orji said there had been public concern about the objective of this arrangement was being compromised. He explained that in 2012 alone, the cost of crude oil swapped was $6.4bn, while value of refined products returned to Nigeria was $6.3 bn. This, he said, left the sum of $100m as revenue loss incurred by government. He maintained that similar concerns were raised with subsidy payment, noting that NEITI’s audit reports disclosed that N4tn was oil subsidy payments between 2006 and 2012. Ogbonnaya-Orji said that in 2006, N219.72bn was spent on subsidy, in 2007 N236.64bn; 2008 N360.18bn; 2009 N198.110bn; 2010 N416.45bn, 2011 N1.9tn and in 2012 N690bn. “The subsidy payments in 2012 amounting to N690bn when compared with N1.9tn paid in 2011 showed a 29 per cent reduction. “This reduction may be due to the January 2012 national protest against oil subsidy,” he said. The NEITI media director said the transparency initiative audit also revealed that NNPC had claimed that a total sum of N1.7 tn was paid as subsidy between 2006 and 2012. Orji said, “NNPC deducted this sum directly from domestic crude oil proceeds before remitting the balance to the federation account. “Subsidy deductions by NNPC increased by 110 per cent from 198bn in 2009 to N416bn in 2010, and 89 per cent in 2011 from N416bn to N786bn. “The increase between 2009 and 2011 alone was 186 per cent from N198bn to N786bn.”

NPA advocates improved port infrastructure to facilitate export Stories by Funmi Coker The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Mallam Habib Abdulahi has advocated for the provision of adequate port infrastructure by the Federal Government and the private sector to facilitate export activities through the nation’s seaports. He however pointed out that other factors which might be extraneous to the Authority are also critical towards achieving enhanced export activities in the nation’s seaports. Stressing that the provision of appropriate port infrastructure was necessary to enhance trade in the economy, Abdullahi assured that the Authority would encourage any effort designed to change the trade orientation of the nation from import dependent to export. The Managing Director was speaking through the General Manager Capital Project, Engr. Rufai Mohammed in a paper titled “Providing Enabling Port Infrastructure to Enhance Trade” at an event in Lagos. He reiterated that as globally accepted seaports accounts for over 80 per cent by volume of International trade and commerce, emphasising that for a seaport to be competitive, it must have a robust infrastructural base amongst other requirements.
He argued that with the major infrastructural improvements embarked upon by the Authority in its ports and harbour in all its four pilotage districts, coupled with the impending 25 year port master plan which has reached an advanced stage, the Organisation is being positioned to properly meet the demand of all categories of port users for both imports and exports. The NPA chief executive explained that mindful of the Federal Government determination of delivering an efficient port system for the overall good of the nation’s economy, the Authority was consolidating and entrenching the gains of the port reform by facilitating and synergizing the activities of the Private Terminal Operators, Shipping Lines, Freight Forwarders and other stakeholders, as well as improving the existing port infrastructure. Abdullahi, who enumerated a number of completed and ongoing capital projects embarked upon by the Authority explained that the projects were meant to add efficiency to the nation’s seaports as well as to make the system competitive, effective and user friendly. “Sustained efforts at providing the enabling port infrastructure has impacted on the overall port operational efficiency”, he added.
Controller, Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Charles Edike has dismissed media reports that a consignment of kits belonging to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) were seized by Customs operatives attached to his command at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa. The Controller who expressed his displeasure over the report said there was no way a consignment belonging to NFF would be detained by his officers without his knowledge. “We are angry that people as important as NFF had to go to the press that they have such consignment in Customs custody when the Area Controller is not aware, the PRO (Public Relations Manager), APM (Area Project Manager) and the DC (Deputy Comptroller) of the terminal are not aware. “Who did they complain to in Customs? If they truly have any consignment in the port, the right thing for them to do was to contact the PRO or at best see the Area Controller and tell them their problem.
Edike
Former Executive Director, Finance and Administration of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Adetola Atekoja has been named the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Maritime Microfinance Bank Limited. Atekoja brings to the MMFB a wealth of experience cutting across banking and finance and the maritime sector. He is an Alumnus of both Obafemi Awolowo University (University of Ife), Ile-Ife, State of Osun, and Harvard Kennedy School, Boston, USA. He is a Fellow, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers and Chartered Institute of Taxation. Atekoja’s work experience of over three decades covered Public Practice and Consulting (with the prestigious firm, KPMG), Industrial, Financial Services and Public sectors of the Nigerian economy.
“I am annoyed for NFF to want to destroy the image of the command and the Service. We are working hard to make things easier for people and NFF is now painting us bad,” he lamented. He urged NFF to put in its best and ensure that they come out victorious in the ongoing match and not use such allegations as excuse for poor performance. “They should find a way of winning the match and not say Customs is the reason for them not winning the match. If they are not prepared to win, they better wake up,” he said. NFF General Secretary on Thursday denied any seizure of the football body’s consignment. Sanusi said the consignment, which arrived at the Lagos port on Sept 4 was in the process of being cleared by the Customs. According to him, the federation is following due process in the clearance of the jerseys and other equipment from its kitting company. “One of the reasons for the delay in the early arrival of the consignment was due to change in the mode of transportation. “Instead of the consignment arrival via air transportation, they were sent them by sea. “I can assure that they are in the process of being cleared. “I want to clarify the fact that the consignment has not been seized but are being cleared at the moment. “We have been used to receiving the consignments by air but this time it came via shipment. “The NFF is following due procedures to ensure the kits come out in time for our teams abroad,” Sanusi said.
Atekoja appointed Maritime Microfinance Bank chairman He served on the boards of Lagos Channel Management Co. Ltd, Bonny Channel Co. Ltd, Continental Shipyard Limited and Metropolitan Insurance Co. Ltd and was a member of several Government Committees in the Maritime Industry. Currently, he is a Non-Executive Director of Heritage Bank where he heads the bank’s Board Credit Committee. Other members of the Board include Mr. Bolaji Akinola, Mrs. Adetoro Suleiman, Prince Olayiwola Shittu, Mr. Ben Ogbeide, Mrs. Lami Lois Tsakma and the Bank’s Acting Managing Director, Mr. Oluwaseyi Hamilton.

NLC decries cheap labour by Multinationals
Aremu
Stories by Joy Ekeke Officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in conjunction with the IndustriALL Global Union, Africa Region, as part of the activities to mark the “Decent Work Day” , met to discuss the problems emanating from the employment policy of the multinational corporations and other companies involved in cheap labour. Organised labour has also frowned at the activities of multinational companies and other business organisations in Nigeria who engage in employing cheap labour, saying that this will only escalate poverty in the country. Addressing members of the NLC and other affiliates, the former Deputy President of the Union, Issa Aremu, said that employment conditions in the private sector has fallen short
of the standard prescribed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), pointing out that, “with unbridled pursuit of profits by private employers of labour, work is no more decent.” “Indeed work is getting precarious as millions of workers worldwide face hard times in the face of worsening conditions at work. World wide, Nigeria inclusive, workers are exposed to worsening health and safety situations with increased cases of deaths and injuries at work.”Urging employers of labour in the country to work towards meeting the standard prescribed by ILO, Aremu said: “Decent work must guarantee minimum living wages for the workers, wages that are paid as at when due.” “Decent work means work that is secured and done by free workers who are entitled to form trade unions and engage
in collective bargaining to protect their rights in the world of work. Decent work delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration.” Aremu further argued, “in Nigeria, there is a dangerous unacceptable non-payment of salaries of workers of up to seven months in some states. Delayed and non-payment of salaries is wage theft, which should be treated as economic crime. Workers have the right to make ungovernable and unmanageable companies and states that are defaulting on wage payment, remittance of pension contributions and union dues.” Said he: “We certainly commend President Muhammed Buhari for working out ways and means to assist some states governors to meet their wage obligations. We must however say that workers’ monthly wages are legitimate regular earnings that must not be tied to presidential bail outs.” Besides, the labour chief remarked, “apart from non-payment of salaries, recruitment of workers for few available jobs is getting precarious. Some unscrupulous employers rather than employing directly outsource their workforce under inhuman and criminal terms as we have seen in the many commercial banks and in government agencies with the tragic case of immigration in which many applicants died after paying for employment forms. “Few workers who are employed are getting poorer because of poor remuneration. Jobs are no longer secured as employers opt for casual short term flexible employment as part of the strategies to save cost and boost profit.”
Group slam Customs’ decision to allow rice importation through land borders Funmi Coker The National Rice Millers Association of Nigeria (NRMAN) said on Thursday in Abuja that the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) erred in its decision to lift the ban on importation of rice through the land borders. The Chairman of the association, Mohammed Abubakar, said the NCS overreached its statutory mandate as an enforcement agency in taking such a policy
decision. Besides, Abubakar said, if the customs succeeded in its decision, it would destroy Nigeria’s rice value chain attained by the previous administration. He said the decision was an attempt by the customs to legitimise the smuggling of rice. “First of all, the customs does not have the power to do that, it is a matter of national policy and customs does not make national policy, it is an implementation
agency. “This will completely kill the rice value chain and everything concerning rice production will stop; customs does not have the right to make such decision. This ban was placed six years ago and everybody knows that, so it does not have any reason to say rice should be brought in through the land borders. “Anyone who gives such directive has smuggling intentions,” he said.
Olukoga
Olukoga urges Lagos to shut down steel firm over workers’ death, maltreatment The Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission (PCC), Mr. Funso Olukoga has called on the Lagos State Safety Commission to immediately shut down a Chinese Steel manufacturing company, Hongxing Steel Company on allegation of maltreatment and death of employees, recorded in the company recently. Olukoga made the call in Lagos at the weekend while addressing newsmen on his commissions preliminary investigation into factory accidents in the steel company based in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos. The commissioner urged the state Safety Commission to ensure that the company remains closed pending when necessary steps are taken to comply with health and safety regulations as stated in the country’s statute books. Olukoga who said the investigation of the commission was carried out pursuant to the provisions of Section 5 (3)(b) of the Public Complaints Commission Act Cap P. 37, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 said their findings presented “evidence of non-compliance with basic universal health and safety standards”. He said the investigation which was conducted in collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) represented by Simeso Amachree and the representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kasimu Kadiri, Felix Uche, Obukese Orere and Director of Investigation of the PCC, Stella Ozojiofor
revealed “a strong probability that factory operates in an environment that is dangerous for workers to operate in”.Also in attendance was Obinna Eze who had his right hand fingers chopped off by a compressor while on duty in the company and has not been paid any compensation. Workers of Hongxing Steel had in a national daily last week cried out over slavery and factory accidents leading to death and maiming of workers without adequate compensation by the company among other untoward issues. They had alleged that one of their colleagues, Emeka Umoh was scalded to death after liquefied iron spilled on his body while on duty, adding that the accident victim later died at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi Araba where he was rushed to for treatment. The commissioner also urged the police authority to investigate all cases of workers’ deaths caused by factory accidents. Olukoga directed the police to liaise with the State Attorney General for possible prosecution should the death of the workers occurred as a result of negligence by the company. He also advised the management of the company to invite former and serving employees who were injured in the course of duty on possible payment of compensation in collaboration with officials of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, PCC, TUC and NLC as witnesses.

NATCOM consortium, new NITEL owners to roll out service in November
Wigwe
Access Bank, Airtel partner Yudala on implementation of YUBOSS Stories by Tony Nwakaegho Yudala, Nigeria’s first true composite online and offline retail chain, has declared that it has entered into a partnership agreement with Access Bank Plc , and Airtel on the implementation of YUBOSS, an entrepreneurship scheme targeted at jobs and wealth creation for Nigerians. As part of the pre-launch of YUBOSS, A-list artistes Iyanya, Naeto C and renowned comedian Ali Baba, among others are billed to hold a work-out session with Nigerians at the National Stadium, Surulere on Saturday October 17 by 7am. Other part of the event includes a wellness talk by a health living expert, inspirational tips on wealth creation in the 21st Century and auction sales supported by Phillips Health-Tech, Airtel and Access Bank. Speaking during a contract signing ceremony held at the Corporate Head Office of Yudala Nigeria at Redemption Crescent, Gbagada, Executive Director, Personal Banking at Access Bank, Mr. Victor Etiokwu, who represented Access Bank Group Managing Director, Mr. Herbert
Wigwe, stated that YUBOSS is a game-changer which is set to unlock prosperity for millions of Nigerians, while taking the nation’s economy to greater heights at this critical period of our national life. “The Yudala model – a fusion of online and offline retail – is one that has captured the imagination of people and the retail market. Right from the day the company was launched, there has been a huge reaction in the market place, in view of the novel idea behind its conception. When the discussions on YUBOSS commenced between both organizations, I was excited because this is an initiative that is set to empower millions of Nigerian youths and by extension, contribute to the growth and development of the Nigerian economy. I am not in doubt that this scheme will be a huge success, especially considering Yudala’s nationwide network of stores, the calibre of renowned entrepreneurs and investors backing Yudala and the drive and expertise exhibited by the entire team,” he said. Commenting on the partnership, Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, Airtel Nigeria, Mr. Segun Ogunsanya, emphasiz-
es the strategic nature of Airtel’s partnership with Yudala, which according to him, will undoubtedly raise the profile of the YUBOSS scheme by offering members a sound telecoms network and high speed data access on 3G network. Ogunsanya explained that contemporary society is increasingly reliant on information as a gateway to wealth creation – a requirement Airtel sufficiently fulfils with its broadband wireless services and high speed internet access which will go a long way in empowering YUBOSS members to achieve the ultimate target of creating wealth for themselves and being their own bosses. YUBOSS is targeted at smart Nigerians which includes undergraduates, post-graduate students, unemployed and underemployed individuals, housewives etc. who have the drive and ambition to earn money and be their own bosses. On his part, Chief Executive Officer, Yudala Nigeria, Mr. Dave Ibelegbu, who signed the contract documents on behalf of the company, reiterated the massive impact YUBOSS will have in improving the lives of participants.
NATCOM Consortium, the new owner of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) and its subsidiary, the Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Limited (M-Tel) has concluded plans to roll out service in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt in this first instance in November this year. The telecom operator that will be trading with the name ‘NTEL’ as its marketing brand, meaning Nigerian Telecommunications will be rolling out services on 4G Long Term Evolution Technology (LTE) which is known to be a more reliable technology for telecom services, especially for data in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt in this first instance and thereafter extend to other cities of the country. Daily Times gathered that the data service the
company plans to launch alongside voice will be boosted with the commencement of service of SAT-3 whose ‘Beach Manhole’ relocation has been completed and will be launched as NITEL rolls out service. It would be recalled that South Atlantic 3/West Africa Submarine Cable (SAT-3), ‘Beach Manhole’ which is the first landing port of an undersea cable, was cut in the process of reclaiming Bar Beach for the new town known as Eko Atlantic project. The network is already being test run for full commercial roll out next month even as subscribers have already started joining the network. Engr. Lanre Ajayi, president, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), welcomed the planned roll out of service by NATCOM.
“It is also an additional network capacity for the country. Their coming on board will help in deepening broadband penetration if they will not concentrate on the perceived commercially viable cities,” Ajayi added. Deolu Ogunbanjo, president, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), expressed excitement on the planned launch of service by NATCOM especially as they are launching with 4G LTE technology, adding that the entrance of NATCOM into the country’s telecommunications landscape will hotup competition and further drive down tariff for the benefit of subscribers. Ogunbanjo urged the company to work towards reviving its fixed network which the country is in dear need of if we are to enjoy true broadband service.

The Commissioner for Works, Mr. Kayode Oso, had, while briefing newsmen on road construction, said Fayose would complete the airport and a multi-billion fly-over, in Ado Ekiti, before the expiration of his tenure in 2018. Ogun community bemoans intimidation by police
Buhari's ministers can be petitioned, says Kwankwaso
Abiodun Taiwo
Yola
Abeokuta
ÏÏÏ The people of Oke-Ore
village in Ado Odo /Ota Local government Area of Ogun State, have raised the alarm that Alhaji Mutairu Owoeye, a notorious land grabber, who is currently being detained at Ibara prison in Abeokuta over the murder of a 18- year-old school leaver from the village, is trying to silence the principal witnesses in the case with a view to subverting justice. Chief Gabriel Omosanya, Aare of the village, speaking on Tuesday to newsmen, alleged that the arrest on Tuesday of Apostle Kunle Amosu, the CDA Chairman of the Village by Special
Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) men from Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos, is a pointer to this. Chief Omosanya alleged that nine police men with Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), from Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos, broke into Apostle Amosu’s house in Owode Yewa, Yewa South Local Government Area, of Ogun State, around 2am, beat and tortured him before being taken away. Apostle Amosu is the third person to be so arrested this week by the SARS men on the orders of Alhaji Owoeye. A middle-aged man, Muyindeen Ajibose, was on Sunday arrested in similar manner in his home in Atan Ota, while the third person, Mr. Wale Olanrewaju, also a
resident of the village was arrested by the SARS men in early hours of Monday. Chief Omosanya lamented that the three men are being detained at Onikan, Lagos, for no offence. He said that they had got wind of a grand plan by Alhaji Owoeye to arrest and detain, and if possible eliminate as many residents of the village as possible, particularly the principal witnesses in the murder case he is being held for. Omosanya expressed worry over the development, stressing that “it is hard to hear that somebody in detention for an alleged murder is still directing policemen to harass innocent villagers.” He added that informa-
tion at their disposal said that the suspect is living like a king in detention, drinking beer, and even holding meetings with his retinue of thugs who come to him in turns. He therefore appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase to save them from constant harassment by the SARS men being used by the detained land grabber. It would be recalled that on 19th of August this year, a young Secondary School leaver from the Oke-Ore village, was allegedly shot dead by Alhaji Owoeye over land matters. Owoeye was thereafter arraigned at Ota High Court, and was subsequently detained at Ibara Prisons.

The prosecution led by Chief Superintendent of Police, Enoch Edobor, the head of Legal Department of CIID, Panti, informed the Court of a remand request
brought against the suspects in pursuant to section 264(1) (2) of the Administration Criminal Justices of Lagos State, 2011. He urged the Court to remand the suspects in prisons custody pending the time the police will complete investigation on the matter. However, the lawyers to the suspects, F. C. Morka, Ola Ogunbiyi and Mobolaji Enitinwa, urged the Court to refuse the remand applications brought against their clients by the prosecution. The trio argued that the Court has no jurisdiction to grant the remand applications of the prosecution as it is not the competent Court
to trial them. They therefore urged the Court to dismiss the remand applications. The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Botoku, however, dismissed the submissions of the defence counsels, saying that what the prosecution filed before her Court was a remand applications not a charge.

FG to sensitize youths on violence, Boko Haram The Federal Government is to embark on the sensitisation of the youths especially those from the North Eastern part of Nigeria, on the dangers of engaging in violent activities, enlisting in the membership of the Boko Haram sect and volunteering on the suicidal mission of being couriers of explosive devices as sponsored by the sect. The Vice President Yemi Osinbajo stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while chairing the Presidential Dialogue forum as part of the activities marking the 21st Nigerian Economic Summit. He listed some of the factors encouraging the spread of violence including regional agitations to poverty and economic deprivation, and assured that government will rapidly address this social malaise through aggressive youth policy, reformed education structure, and creation of employment opportunities.

Group raises concern about social vices on campuses
A non-governmental organisation, the RAWICOM Group, has expressed concern about what it observes as prevalence of social vices on campuses of tertiary institutions across the country. In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the coordinator of the group, Mr. Andrew Eihoda, called on all stakeholders to evolve pragmatic measures
to curb such vices. He cited cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse, examination malpractices and promiscuity, among others, as some of such vices that posed dangers to the future of the youth on campuses. Eihoda said that the organisation had taken it as its social responsibility to carry out awareness campaign on the

dangers of the vices on campuses of various tertiary institutions across the country. According to him, the organisation has prepared thoughtprovoking topics to be presented in seminars to students of various higher institutions in the country. He said the seminar series sought to examine the reason why students engaged in social vices, provide solutions to the prevalence of the vices and methods of mentoring the youth to shun such activities. He said the seminar would be inaugurated at the University of Jos between December 4 and December 5 where stakeholders, including parents and lecturers, would share opinions on how to curb social vices on campuses. Eihoda also called on government at all levels to support all genuine efforts by organisations and individuals aimed at checking cultism and other social ills on campuses. He, nonetheless, promised that the organisation would use every resources within its capacity to promote the campaign and impact positively on the lifestyles of the Nigerian youth.
Buhari’s TSA hits Education sector ÏdƎ ƉƉ ƃƎƆƐƆƎƆƄ Ɔ Ɛ ƍ ƆƎƆƄ è Ǝ Ƅƍ Stories by Augustine Okezie Abuja Barely three weeks after full implementation of the newly-introduced Treasury Single Account, TSA, in all transactions involving Federal Government institutions, Education sector appears hardest hit by the new fiscal policy regime as activities are getting grounded and official functions becoming impaired by the paucity of funds and the attendant bureaucratic process involved in obtaining the release of funds A senior official of the National Universities Commission (NUC), who pleaded anonymity, confided in Daily Times that activities are gradually getting stagnated in the commission due to lack of funds coupled with the attendant difficulties experienced in obtaining
the release of needed funds. He cited the recent plan by the commission to send senior inspectors on routine varsity inspection and monitoring nationwide which has been stalled due to lack of funds. Even Blue-chip, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) was not spared the harrowing financial experience as it had to reiveiw its annual budget profile and suspend some sundry expenditure. Meanwhile, Vice Chancellors of federal universities have raised the alarm over imminent collapse of federal owned tertiary institutions because of impediments arising from compliance with the new system. In a letter dated October 5, 2015, and signed by both the Chairman, Committee of Vice Chancellors, Professor Adebiyi Daramola and the Secretary- General, Professor Michael Faborode, and delivered to President Muhammadu Buhari through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,
Mr. David Lawal Babachir, they appealed to the President to exempt the university system from the TSA for e-collection of Government Receipts structure. The Vice Chancellors argued that, although the SGF had met with a delegation from the Committee of Vice Chancellors during which he (SGF) directed the university system to comply with the new system, the effects of the compliance is taking a negative toll on normal activities in the campus. “The Committee held an emergency meeting on October 5, 2015, to review the situation on our various campuses. Reports from federal universities across the country indicate that none has been able to transact any business on the TSA platform three weeks after compliance. “What is more worrisome is the uncertainty of how long the withdrawal problem will last. Nigeria have also not been helpful as to how soon the fund withdrawal problem can be resolved. “As a result of the challenge, many universities have had to postpone examinations, while those that are on vacation have had to defer resumption for the new academic session. Other activities such as students’ field trips, accreditation and convocation ceremonies have also been put on hold across the country”, part of the letter read. The Committee also lamented other retrogressive consequences of the TSA regime which include the suspension of international collaborations with development agencies and foreign universities and, incidentally, the grounding of the operations of some of the African Centres of Excellence resulting in the students being stranded. The Vice Chancellors expressed support for government’s resolve to ensure compliance with TSA, but regretted the problems associated with its imple-
mentation in the universities and, therefore, called on President Buhari to grant exemption to those accounts they described as critical to the smooth running and survival of the university system. The Leadership of the two main academic staff unions, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) have on their part threatened to embark on industrial actions if the situation is not urgently reversed.

TETFUND has moved Nigeria’s Education forward-Kebbi Gov. Augustine Okezie Abuja Governor of Kebbi State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has reiterated the invaluable contribution of Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) in the resuscitation of Nigeria’s declining Education sector and commended its various intervention efforts in developing the sector and sustaining the funding of tertiary institutions in the country. Governor Bagudu, who made the declaration recently in Abuja while on a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Fund, declared that Kebbi State had benefited tremendously from the TETFund interventions. He further maintained that the agency has gone a long way in creating the enabling environment that has helped move Nigeria’s Education forward. He said: “TETFund is an institution that has done well and I consider myself as an advocate for the institution and certainly I will continue to be an advocate for the institution and I think coming here is one of the ways
of showing support and showing that I believe in it. “What more can TETFund do for us in Kebbi? They have done a lot for us, they have done a lot for all the states in Nigeria because the amendment that was done in 2010 provided them the platform to intervene in all federal and states tertiary institutions and they have been doing well. ‘’They supported the establishment of the new Federal University in Kebbi, the state university, the federal polytechnic, and our Collage of Education. Before then, they had supported a lot of Primary and Secondary Education before the amendment of the TETFund act. What more can they do for us? “TETFund is an institution that is owned by the federation, not just the Federal Government and me being part of this institution, I feel it is one of the first institutions I should visit to show support and believe in what they are doing. Speaking further, he noted that as the number one rice producer in Nigeria, the state introduced various programmes to
boost the production of the crop. Earlier in his address, the TETFUND boss, Prof. Bogoro expressed optimism that more Nigerian Universities would go up in ranking globally, if the current infrastructural intervention efforts are sustained by the Federal Government. The Executive Secretary further explained that most public tertiary institutions in the country were lagging behind other nations because they were unable to meet two-third of accreditation requirements, particularly on infrastructural and human capacity development. He said now that the situation has improved, brighter prospects await these institutions as the organisation would not relent in its intervention efforts. The TETFund boss said that the fund has intervened in the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, the Waziri Umar Polytechnic in Birnin Kebbi, the College of Education in Argungun as well as the Federal University; promising that TETFund was determined to strengthen the institutions in the state.

Educationist advises students on teaching ethics An educationist, Mr. Simeon Fowowe, has advised students, preparing to be teachers to take necessary steps to ensure that they conformed to the ethics of teaching practice. Fowowe, who is the Head of Department of Early Childhood Care and Education at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education in Ijanikin, near Lagos, gave the advice on Tuesday. He was speaking in an interview with a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. According to him, most students on teaching practice are ignorant of the ethics of teaching and the code of practice of the teaching profession. He argued that since many students were ignorant of the ethics of teaching practice, they often did not attach seriousness to the
teaching profession. The lecturer said that teaching practice provided immense opportunity for teachers to acquire practical knowledge of teaching. ``Teaching practice is the dissemination in practical reality of what has been learnt in school. ``Students on teaching practice must, therefore, follow professional ethics and conform to the dress code required of a professional teacher.’’ Fowowe said that some students indulged in bad dressing habits, arguing that this should not be tolerated because of teachers’ influence on children. ``The student-teacher attitude is important in portraying a teacher as a bad or good professional. ``It has to do with whether the student-teacher is well composed, neat and simple or not.

NYSC Acting Director, Certification, Alhaji Aliyu Taura (left) and Director, Press And Public Relations, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, unveiling the newly improved NYSC Certificate in Abuja…on Tuesday.
NYSC to issue certificates with corps members’ photographs The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) said on Tuesday it would begin to issue certificates of national service with the passport photographs of corps members from October 15. The Director-General of NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, said this in Abuja at the unveiling of the newly improved certificate of national service. Olawumi, who was represented by Aliu Daura, NYSC’s Director of Certification, said the new certificate was produced to end all forms of fraud perpetuated by users of the old certificate. “In our concerted effort to make the operation of the NYSC conform with global best practices, the scheme engaged in the holistic ‘e-NYSC solution’ with
effect from batch ‘C’ 2014, where prospective corps members register online before proceeding to the orientation camps. “This resulted in the enhancement of issuance of NYSC certificates namely: Certificate of National Service, Certificate of Exemptions, and Letters of Exclusion. “With effect from Batch ‘C’ 2014, all certificates of national service bear passport photographs of the corps member at the upper right hand corner of the certificate. “This is to guarantee the security of our certificates from forgery and to block all chances of impersonation. “Therefore, Batch ‘C’ 2014 corps members, who are due to pass-out on Thursday, 15 October 2015, will have their certificates
embossed with their photograph. “Employers are encouraged to forward any certificate purportedly issued by the scheme for verification of its authenticity or otherwise. “Effort is being made by the scheme to also make the verification of all NYSC certificates to be automated for easy access by the general public.” Olawumi said that asides the passport photograph the newly improved certificate also contained a back code with security numbers. He also said that they still featured the information in the old certificates except for the security features and passport photograph. He said that it was only the NYSC that could locate the code
Fayemi seeks reformation of education sector
Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday, identified career mismatch, unfavourable school curriculum and school admissions difficulties among others as problems bedeviling the nation’s education sector. Fayemi, a ministerial nominee, said this in answer to a question posed by Senators when he appeared for screening on the floor of the Senate in Abuja, and
suggested that urgent solutions need to be taken to salvage the sector. The former Ekiti State governor, who described himself as a teacher and researcher, also said that only 10 percent gain admissions into universities in the country. He urged that national university systems respond to the educational challenges of the people, as well as having quality teachers to match the demands.
and security numbers on the certificate adding that the measure was adopted to further enhance the security of the certificate. The director general said previous certificates issued by the scheme was still valid and could be used by the owners. Earlier, the Director of Press, NYSC, Bose Aderibigbe, said since the inception of the scheme 42 years ago, it had experienced cases of impersonation of the certificate. Aderibigbe said that people often used certificates issued to other individuals to apply for jobs. She said the new certificate, which features the photograph of corps members, will put an end to such cases as nobody would be able to use an NYSC certificate issued another to perpetrate fraud. The director charged members of the public especially employers to ensure that they verified the NYSC certificates of prospective employees. She said that this was earlier done by writing to the scheme, adding that employers could now verify the certificates online. “You do not have to come to the headquarters just go online and verify the authenticity of the certificate. This will ensure that the people you are recruiting are the real owners of the document. “Those who qualify for the certificate of national service are those who participated in the youth service right from the orientation till passing out. “Those who qualify for the certificate of exemption are graduates who are above 30 years at the time of graduation or recipients of the National Presidential Honours Award. “Persons who have joined the Armed Forces, Police, National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Security (DSS) are also issued certificates of exemption. “Letters of exclusion are issued to part-time and distance learning students and those who have not been able to pass through the normal university or polytechnic system,” Aderibigbe said.

poised to carry out a total revamp of the school hostels and that is what we are doing presently”. In a related development, Osayuki decried the lack of maintenance culture among students and Nigerians in general. He stated that students don’t see these equipment as their own hence they misuse them and destroy them without remorse or obligation to put them in their right order.
“I can attest to the fact that this hostel isn’t conducive but I don’t stay in the hostels, students are the ones who stay there. They have to keep their hostels clean always; use the bathroom appropriately, place the dirt in the waste bin, and use the sporting equipment properly and everything would be in place. It is not about changing the facilities in the hostels but the ability to maintain them when they are in-
stalled”. However, the vice chancellor assured the students that all their woes would soon be thrown to the wind as he has directed the Director of Works, to ensure quick and efficient renovations and maintenance of the hostel. He also stated that the issue of congestion in the hostel would soon be a thing of the past as there is ongoing construction of hostels in the site B of the university.
It would be recalled that A tenman team made up of students from Electrical/Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments officially unveiled the Prototype vehicle called Delta Cruz in a road show on September 17, 2015 that was attended by high profile people including the Ovie of Uvwie kingdom, other high chiefs and the Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. Akii Ibhadode. The Eco-Marathon is held around the world. It began in 1937 by young Shell engineers who were building cars that could go long distances with little fuel. Entrants come from several backgrounds including enthusiastic amateurs, university teams and staff of major motor manufacturers.

OGUNTADE ISMAILA presents their case. The pains of residents of Ifo/ Ewekoro Federal Constituency in Ogun State were the focus of deliberations and supplications to President Muhammadu Buhari at a community town hall forum held recently at the Community Development Council (CDC) in Ifo Local Government Area of the state. The large turnout attracted community heads, ward leaders as well as market leaders and youths of the various communities under the constituency. Addressing the forum in his opening speech, Zonal Chairman of the Community Development Council (CDC), Ifo Local Government of Ogun State, Prince Adebanjo Gabriel lamented that the hopes of his people have been raised and dashed many times since 1999 by political maneuverings that resulted in abandoned federal projects. “For decades now, successive administrations have ignored our constituency and denied us of basic infrastructural facilities, making life unreasonably difficult for our people. “The time has come for us to take our case to the Presidency to intervene by addressing the backwardness of our people in the rural communities. The 36th Annual Adult Harvest Thanksgiving Service of the 68 years old Celestial Church of Christ recently held at the Army Barracks Parish in Lagos with the perennial leadership crisis hanging over the large church. Amidst the pomp and celebration, the church did not forget the perennial crisis rocking the 68 years old Church. In his anniversary message, the Chairman, Celestial Church of Christ (Evangelism and Crusade Worldwide), Most Superior

Senior Evangelist R.O Sangojimi, implored all the warring parties to close ranks and put an end to the recurring crisis. “I am appealing to all concerned members of this great church to please close ranks and move together in unity and love so that we can get to our promise land in our life time.
“For years now, I have been sending touching messages but it seemed to be falling on deaf ears of those concerned. Think over it,” he admonished. It would be recalled that the Church has been engulfed in a fierce leadership crisis between surviving sons of its founder, late Prophet Samuel Bilehou Oshoffa and some leaders, with each one laying claim to the supreme head of the church in their various domains. It got so bad that the crisis became a subject of litigation. In one of those unusual muscle flexing, Olatosho Matthew Oshoffa emerged as the spiritual head of the CCC after an Ilaro High Court in Ogun State on March
the site of the two federal government agency offices along OkeAro/Matogun Road. “It would require just one tour of Ifo Local Government Area for the ministers to see how the projects are being handled and the adverse effect of the abandonments in the lives of the people and the communities in that area.” On the construction of road and a bridge adjacent to the Aviation Site, the leaders recalled that they have had to resort to serious battles with federal government officials in the past in order to have the projects done to save the communities from imminent flood disasters but nobody in government appear to be concerned. Also speaking at the forum, Area Chairman of Akinosi Community Development Council (CDC), Prince Amos Oladele lamented over the construction of Millennium Development Goal (MDG’S) site in Akinosi area community. “Our people embarked on a loan of N8 million for the purchase of two plots of land which were donated for the project as requested by MDG’s officials. “This project was sponsored by Senator Olugbenga Obadara of Ogun Central Senatorial District and Supervised by Federal Ministry of Health under Federal Health Insurance schemes to address childbirth related problems CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

All efforts to get the General Hospital, the State and Federal Ministries of health on Health Insurance Scheme to equip and commission the centre and make it operational remained unsuccessful.” Prince Oladele then passionately appealed to President Muhammad Buhari to investigate the projects as a matter of urgency and ensure its completion for use of the people of Ogun State. In the same vein, Zonal Chairman of the CDC, Ewekoro Local Government in Ogun State, Pastor Gbemisola Sunday Olusegun also expressed dismay over the poor representation of the people in Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency and Ogun Central Senatorial District of Ogun State. “Politicians are not being faithful to people in discharging their responsibilities. This will guarantee sustainability of the goals of development in our Federal Constituency and the Senatorial District.” In conclusion, Pastor Olusegun commended the corporate social responsibility of the management of LAFAGE African Plc, for taking up the responsibility of the federal government upon themselves by rehabilitating Papalanto/Itori-Ewekoro-Abeokuta Expressway, a project being handled by Enphma Nig. being removed as the pastor of CCC, worldwide.” Explaining the revelation that confirmed his candidacy, Mobiyina said: “During one of my journeys to France, specifically on the 30th of May 2015, my father appeared to me and said ‘My son, Olatosho, the church has diverted from my calling and I want you to stand up, take up my abandoned work and lead my children.’ The 45-year-old disclosed that his appointment and declaration as the “Unification Leader” of CCC was done in Imeko, Ogun State on June 10, 2015 after series of consultations. Hardly had he made that assertion than a member of the CCC Board of Trustees, Evang. Samson Banjo declared that the church did not have a “lawful and duly accredited’’ pastor. Banjo, who is also a member of the Pastor-in-Council of the church, said this while briefing newsmen at its National Headquarters, Makoko, Yaba, Lagos. He described as “fake, not genuine and an exercise in futility for any person or group of persons to recognise Evang. Tosho
Oshoffa, as the pastor or leader of the church. “Any assertion, representation, claims and pretention by any person or persons including the illadvised and baseless self-declaration of Tosho to leadership of the church is fake,’’ he stressed. This ongoing crisis at a point, moved former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to wade into the crisis in the hope of finding a lasting solution to the crisis. According to OBJ, “the unity and unification of the Celestial Churches worldwide is very paramount to me because this is a big church that has a deep history; any division whatsoever will not serve its interest either now or in the future. “I do not take sides in any dispute; the court has spoken and the verdict must be respected. I encourage you all to be strong, embark on this task with all fairness and do all within your powers to unite the church,” he concluded. Toeing the line of reconciliation, Sangojimi also urged all members of the church to come together in the interest of the church. Quoting Ecclesiastes Chapter 4 verse 13, he enjoined all the warring partners to sheath their swords and embrace peace for the unification of the church. Tracing the genesis of the crisis, Sangojimi believes that the failure of the founder of the church, late Prophet Samuel Bilehou Oshoffa to install a leader before his death was the catalyst of the problem.
ment: what do you expect from such a person? “The same can be said of some of our representatives at the national level; some of them just lobby for the position and become just bench warmers when they get there, and this has caused communities here in Ewekoro to suffer major setbacks especially in the area of development.” The clergy man observed that many abandoned FG projects happened as a result of discontinuity in office and bitter politics after incumbent politicians fail in their second term bid; and when a new one assumes office, projects get abandoned and processes begin afresh all over again. Apart from the backwardness in the all areas of development, Gbemisola further disclosed that the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency also suffered total set back at key positions at the National Assembly as a result of political instability and discontinuity of office which made some of them to come back home empty handed. “Our people need orientation to make them know the importance of voting to re-elect only individuals and parties that perform and deliver the dividence 10.20 am. ‘People of unquestionable character’ ÎÎÎ ’It’s coming o.’
‘Yes o.’ ‘O Papa o.’ ‘Yes o.’ ‘O Mama o.’ ‘Yes o.’ For nearly four months we waited for the ministerial list. But when it came out a few days ago, the first batch of the ministerial nominees wasn’t accepted with enthusiasm. We were expecting ‘saints’ but found on it some familiar names that had been speculated. Female nominees on the list were not up to five while the youth representation (35 - 45yrs old) was nil. We don’t know yet the reasons for this. The president, like most of us, knows that in previous dispensations there had been people who, in their youth, were selected to be in government at state or federal level e.g. Anthony Enahoro of blessed memory, Rasheed Gbadamosi, Ismael Igbani. Even Yakubu Gowon (Go On With One Nigeria) was in his thirties when he became the Head of State. So why isn’t there any candidate within those age brackets? The young ones need to reinvent themselves if they want to be given slots on any future ministerial list. Some elders suggest that many
young people need to show humility and change their ‘I-Know-It-All’ attitude. Experience of a resident in Lagos would support this view. A presenter with one of the private radio houses in Lagos blocked the phone number of a caller because the latter advised her that ‘criteria’ was plural of ‘criterium’. How could a radio presenter block a listener’s number when the latter wasn’t vulgar or rude? The young ones should develop a reading culture to be able to hold a deep conversation on current affairs. Their interest in the mundane aspect of life portrays them as shallow. They must shed the ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ mentality and know that there’s no short path to success. Learning’s a lifetime process so they must learn to be patient. A voice says ‘Have faith.’ Have faith in PMB. Have faith in Nigeria. It may be a tall order to have faith. With the recent and present goings-on in the land, it really looks hard to have faith. Our Number Three citizen was in the dock very recently. His alleged crime was false assets declaration - an offence committed when he was the Kwara State Gov-
ernor. Shortly after Number Three was docked, 83% of our senators passed a vote of confidence in their President. A columnist stated that by this action the senators seemed to be saying that ‘they see nothing wrong in Saraki’s behavior… thus admitting the transfer of the appearance of wrongdoing hanging over his neck to themselves’. I had hoped that the Senate President would be at the vanguard of those young ones who would fill the shoes of the ‘sit-tight’ older generation. Nigerians have been witnessing the recycling of statesmen and stateswomen so if the ‘youngees’ schemed to dislodge these ‘sit-tight’ elders ‘nothing spoil o’. The rule of the game’s the Winner Takes It All. Those were my arguments till the ‘forg-

Just when we were smarting from Saraki’s ‘tango’ with the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), news of the impasse at the primaries for the All Progress Congress gubernatorial aspirants in Bayelsa broke. That the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is an Ijaw party has been proven to be untrue. It has been shown that former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, an Ijaw, was the rallying figure and father figure for all party members in Bayelsa State. That was before 29 May 2015 when power changed hands
in Aso Rock. A ‘tsunami’ was how a national newspaper described the defection of over 2,000 PDP members to the APC last August. The voices that were the loudest when the going was good are now ready to ‘take their political destinies in their own hands’. Even a close associate of GEJ who has since defected to the APC publicly stated that his political luck wasn’t tied to that of Jonathan’s. Haba! The Bayelsa State Ag. Chairman said that the defectors ‘could not be regarded as dependable nor should they be celebrated… as political assets’. But when GEJ’s godfather publicly declared that he was taking a walk, there was a thundering silence. I bet GEJ’s phones ‘no longer ring’. ‘The PDP in Bayelsa State is intact,’ said the acting
Chairman. It must be because with all these news of defections right, left and centre in Bayelsa State, there’s still someone there who hasn’t left the fold of the party. After all the ‘Ogas At The Top’ of the party did to him, he’s still a card-carrying member of the party. A man who in his manifesto, had introduced himself as a ‘boy tutored in the school of hard knocks and a man whose talents were forged in the dual furnaces of diligence and determination’. His priorities, if elected to the Senate, were to (i) promote interactive representation, (ii) stimulate education and job creation and (ii) enhance social justice. When the results of the primaries of the senatorial districts in Bayelsa came out, this gentleman’s name was missing. He who asked his people to ‘put a round peg in a round hole’ wasn’t picked. What were the reasons given for not choosing the first Bayelsan to be made a Senior Advocate of Nigeria? Even if he wasn’t chosen because he’s a SAN, he should have been chosen because of his pedigree. He’s the grandson of one of the renowned heroes of Nigeria’s independence struggle - Ernest Sisei Ikoli, the first Nigerian editor of the Daily Times. Step forward, Anthony George-Ikoli (SAN) and take a bow. You’re the pride of Bayelsa. With the current travails of the 8th Senate, you might be the one having the last laugh on those who stepped between you and your destiny.

I find fulfillment in just being creative – Eva Alordiah
Mutiat Alli
Rap diva, Eva Alordiah, aka Eva, has been creating quite a buzz ever since she came into the music industry. Eva, who doubles as the CEO of Make-up by Orsela, a make-up/cosmetic outfit, is not leaving any stone un-turned when it comes been creative. In this chat with MUTIAT ALLI, the sensational Rap queen reveals her love for style, music and other issues. Excerpts: Beyond the songstress, who is Eva? Eva is a laid back, I-don’t-wanna-go-out type of chic. I love to stay home, cook and serve people food. I’m a go-getter, very calm but aggressive with my work. I believe in the gifts that abound from sharing. I believe in the satisfaction derived from personal worship with God. I am a strongwilled person. What thrills you the most about makeup? That would definitely be special effects. It’s more challenging than the regular beauty and fashion looks, especially if you are working on whole body pieces. I have loved horror movies since I was a child. I mean, I don’t even think I enjoy a movie if it isn’t horror or action where there’s a lot of blood and special effects going on. I think that’s where my interest in SFX stems from. Special effects makeup is like my getaway drug. Zombies, dead skin, bruises, scars, animated characters, missing limbs, skeletal frames, the works; I just sit there and create realistic life forms and it fuels my creative senses, makes me happy. You do your make-up unaided? Yes, I do my make-up for my video shoots, photo shoots, events, etc. I also have a lot of exciting job opportunities from artistes, celebrities, magazines and a host of others.
my creative energy to makeup and fashion on their own. What I do is focus on what it is I am doing one at a time. So if I am at the makeup school teaching for instance, I couldn’t be bothered with what’s going on with my music in the studio and so on. Which is more fulfilling for you? I find fulfillment in just being creative. So whether it is music, movies, makeup, writing or fashion, as long as I am creating something, I am fine. I find them both fulfilling in their different ways. I guess music and makeup both serve their purposes for me. I can’t exactly say this is how much satisfaction or joy I derive from doing music and performing, or compare that to how I feel with make-up artistry. Everything I do satisfies me and fills me in its own way. I’m very grateful to God for being able to do the things I do. Really they are all hobbies. I don’t necessarily treat them like tedious work. Out of the other genres of music, why Rap? It was love at first listen for me, really. I have always been a writer and lover of music all my life. My brothers brought hip-hop to the house and I got hooked on that. Rap challenges my writing process and I guess I like a challenge. I love how so true rap can cut across globally and it is fun to be part of that, maybe even create over here with people who love it enough to keep doing it. You have a very strong personal style which has come to be accepted as the “Eva” brand. How would you describe your style? My style is full of funk and flare. I guess I could say that. I am very edgy, very spontaneous and I like to stay younger and younger with it. I don’t like it difficult. I like it extra creative and well put together. For the most part, I am at my best when a lot of people do not agree with my choices. That’s how I know I satisfy myself.

T E A M
How are you able to combine this talent of yours, from been a rap diva to make-up and entrepreneur? I haven’t been able to combine things as best as I would. I really just have enough time to focus on something at a time. But I love being all these different things and they all find a home in my career as a music artiste. I supervise the business end of my music. I do my makeup for my shoots and videos. I design and style my outfits with some of the most talented designers across Nigeria. These are just extensions of me being a creative person at heart. So whether it is writing, designing, drawing, creating music or makeup artistry, as long as I am creating something, then it’s just relatively natural for me. So, I guess you could say I am being of service to Eva right now. When I get breaks from music, I exert

L3 Relationship
What cheating on my fiancé taught me about monogamy Mutiat Alli
T
ade was my first real boyfriend, my high school sweetheart, my date to four proms. He was the first guy I’d ever brought home who could look my mom in the eye. A nice guy. A year after Tade and I first started dating, I came home from high school one day and my father was gone. Just like that, he’d left my mother for another woman. I never dealt with the abandonment. Instead, I consoled myself with the knowledge that Tade loved me and would never leave me, not like my dad had. Never mind that he and I grew less compatible as we got older, he was everything my father wasn’t. The first time I cheated on Tade, we were in university and I was living in Mexico as a student abroad. I slept with a guy who worked behind the deli counter of the bodega on the street where I lived. I told myself, what happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico. I told myself it didn’t count. Then it happened again, this time back on campus. One night, I drunkenly stumbled home with a guy I’d met at a party. I told myself it’d been a mistake. I kept dating Tade. I never told him and he never found out. A lot of people think monogamy simply doesn’t work. They argue that human beings just aren’t wired to be with one person and one person only — a common argument that was used in defense of the people ousted in the Ashley Madison hack — and that it’s time to do away with this convention. This was how I justified my transgressions back then, by telling myself I couldn’t control it. It was just human nature. I didn’t stop. My first full-blown affair happened a few years later, after Tade and I had graduated from the university. This time was different. Tayo and I had been friends first. We trusted and respected one another. That didn’t change when we started having sex. I thought I was in love with her, and so I came clean and told Tade I was having an affair. I thought that telling him about Tayo would absolve me of the guilt I felt for all my past indiscretions, but that didn’t happen. Tade was devastated; it was all my fault. To Tade’s credit, the fact that it was a woman made it neither better
nor worse. He wanted to work it out, and I felt I had no choice. I was confused, we decided. I convinced myself that Tayo had taken advantage of me and that it had been a mistake. After my affair with Tayo, I redoubled my efforts to gain control of the situation: I tried to be “good.” I stopped drinking and started running marathons. I quit my job and went to journalism school to become a writer. Two years later, Tayo and I were engaged. But in the journalism school, I met a new group of people. They thought like me and read the books that interested me. We talked about sexual liberation. I considered myself sex-positive, part of a social movement that embraced sexuality with few limits. The problem was that — when it came to sex — these political and intellectual beliefs about sex made it that much harder to admit that my personal sexual conduct was problematic. I’m just incapable of monogamy, I was still convinced. Since Rick wanted to be with me, this was something he’d just have to accept. Austin was a guy I met in journalism school. He and I would chat online all day when I was at work, and we started attending literary readings together in the evenings. We were seen together so often people started to assume we were dating. Secretly, I enjoyed this. Never mind that I was still engaged to Tade at the time. Austin was a writer, destined for success, popular in the way that tenacious, overachieving kids can be. Though my relationship with Austin had yet to turn sexual, it felt inevitable. One night during this time, a guy named Elliott walked me home after class. Whatever we talked about was not interesting, but I could tell that Elliott was interested in me and I liked the feeling of being desired. Under the pretense of having something to do with school, we started
exchanging emails daily. Austin and Elliott were friends, and I kept my relationship with one from the other (and both, obviously, from Tade). The impossibility of my actually being with either of them made it all the more exciting. Elliott suggested once that I shouldn’t flirt with him because I had a fiancé. Hearing “no” only egged me on. I admired his resistance. Then, once while drunk, I leaned into Austin and kissed him. He kissed me back. I immediately regretted it, knowing exactly what would happen. I knew I’d become insecure and possessive. Like my relationship with Tayo, my friendship with Austin would be destroyed. It was as if the only way I knew how to handle having done something I regretted was to do it again. That kiss led to a short-lived affair with Austin, which lead to a series of other infidelities. For the next month, any chance I got, I’d get drunk and fall into my classmate’s mouths — forgettable, regrettable, sloppy encounters in the restrooms, stairwells, and alleyways. I told myself I was having fun, experimenting. But it was more than harmless fun. I pretended Tade and I had an open relationship. I convinced myself that our rule was “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”At the same time, I resented Tade for not calling me out. I lost respect for him. I also lost respect for people who fooled around with me. I lost respect for myself. Ultimately, carrying on multiple relationships was a complicated way of avoiding intimacy. I clung to Tade, even though it was an ill fit. Because he didn’t satisfy my impossible neediness, I cheated. I was never fully present in any one relationship, and thus avoided being vulnerable. Underneath it all, my actions were motivated by the fear I was unlovable and that I would be abandoned. The worse I felt, the more I sought reli ef. When I finally left Tade, I took everything:
the furniture, the posters from the walls, photographs ripped from the albums. I came by the night after I moved out and found Tade crying, alone, sitting on the floor. The look on his face was as if I had died, and so I felt afraid. I said, “Stop crying or I’ll leave.” “You’re leaving anyway,” he said. “There’s nothing I can do to stop you.” He was right. There was nothing that he or anyone could have done to stop me. I was a monster, abandoning someone who loved me. I was just like my father. It took me a long time to recover, whereas Tade started dating someone else less than a month after we’d broken up — the woman he would eventually marry. Around the time they started dating, Elliott stopped returning my emails. He was doing me a favor by cutting me off, but of course I didn’t see it that way then. When Elliott refused to step in and rescue me, I grew increasingly desperate. I felt abandoned. I was angry at my friends. Recovery began when I finally started taking responsibility for my actions: I went to rehab for my alcoholism, and my addiction to sex and love. I didn’t do recovery perfectly. They tell you to take time away from dating, but I couldn’t do that. My sixth day of sobriety, I fell into a codependent relationship that lasted for six years. It was dysfunctional, but at least I was monogamous. When that relationship ended, I dated lots of people. But eventually I did go cold-turkey single for around three months, and it was one of the most transforming periods of my life. I learned to enjoy my own company. I grieved the loss of my father and became acquainted with the feelings I was running from. Today I know that while non-monogamy may be human nature, cheating is not. Everyone is capable of being honest about their feelings, wants, and needs. Before this, I blamed everyone for my cheating and had loads of excuses, but when it comes to infidelity, I don’t think there’s ever an excuse. The fact that I’m in a committed, monogamous relationship today is almost beside the point. To be right in a relationship, I needed to get right with myself. What do you think; I really need help and somebody to talk to. Send feedback/response to 07035429758 (SMS ONLY), or mutiat.alli@dailytimes.com.ng

Diana Ross Diva Style Master class Eyola eyola@aol.com
Empowering music with a gravity-defying afro in tow, multi award-winning musician and actress Diana Ross has a style that commands attention. This legendary diva is best known for the sparkly ensembles she stylishly rocked during her tenure as lead singer of the most successful musical girl group of the ‘60s - The Supremes. Most of the outfits worn by her and her band mates were in fact made by Diana herself - an aspiring fashion designer who completed a design course at Cass Technical High School in Detroit (US). Diana made sure to merge her fashion talent with her musical career and like fashion pioneers before her (e.g. Gabrielle Chanel), Diana adopted a signature look that became her style uniform.
Still looking as youthful as ever in her early seventies, Diana’s afro continues to be her most iconic trademark. She also styled her locks in two hairstyles that have become synonymous with her iconic look - the beehive and sideswept bob. Hairstyles that always look shake-your-groove-thing ready, Diana embraces her natural kinky hair sending a powerful message to black women: embrace your natural hair. The seventies disco-era queen continues her reign inspiring generations of musicians with the likes of Beyoncé, Solange Knowles, Madonna and Rhinana often taking style cues from the ‘70s style pioneer. Taking a leaf out of Diana’s book, these modern day celebrities have multiple costume changes, stage theatrics and special effects and wear eye-catching frocks during their stage performances. True to her own words spoken on stage in 1983 during a performance in Central Park (New York), “it took me a lifetime to get here, and I’m not going anywhere”, 71-year-old Diana proves that just like her music, her style is timeless.
Glamourous furs and feather shawls are staple cover-ups synonymous with Diana’s style. What makes her style so glamorous? It’s this simple: she always chose what she wanted to wear instead of wearing what current fashion dictated.
In her heyday, Diana was rarely seen without hoop earrings. Although it must be said that her upbeat, confident and approachable personality became part of her signature look. Another strong positive message to women can be divulged from Diana’s attitude and personality: love the skin you are in.
Big eyelashes and minimal makeup was, and continues to be, Diana’s beauty mantra. Her eyes have always been the focus of attention although from time to time she injects colour with her favourite shade: red, a staple hue she chooses for both lipstick and nail polish.
One of the advocates of androgynous dressing, Diana showed women that they could look both powerful and sexy in a trouser suit and demonstrated how to wear this style fashionably, out of office hours.
Diana always opts for bedazzled costumes covered in sequins, stones and beads, dresses you just wanted to reach out and touch. Her commanding stage presence was complimented by her eye-catching colourful ensembles, all of which have inspired many musicians after her and undoubtedly inspired the wardrobe of protégés Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5.

Teenagers
and SOCIETY
Tolulope Adebamiro
C
hildren are gifts from God, regardless of if they are male or female. In the life of every teenager, society plays an important role in shaping teens character; society also helps shape ability to leave among people, their ideas of wrong and right and their general outlook of life. Teens also need help from their parents; parents have strong influence in the lives of their teens. A Christian Broadcasting Network programmes says: “Understanding the influence various aspects of society have on your teens help parents to nurture the character of their teens. Parents spends more time with their teens and influence them through their actions and
words. Teenagers learn a lot of skills such as Nurturing, Socializing, and DecisionMaking through observation and communicating with parents. Involved parenting is more likely to prevent their teens from drug and substance abuse or teenage unwanted pregnancy. Although teenagers may seem rebellious, they are likely to adapt the good character as they mature.
Teenage and Media The Media also can influence teenagers positive or negatively because teenagers spend more of their time on the internet, watching TV, reading magazine and listening to music. Negative influence from the media include violence, hateful or vulgar language in movies or music, explicit sex scene, gender, religious
or ethnic stereotyping, and unrealistic presentation. Alternatively, the media is a source of info-mating teens. It helps create cultural, political and social awareness for teenagers. They also help teens get a better understanding of their environment and society. We can also look at the aspect of friends in the lives of a teen. In the life of every teenager, the choice of friends and people to associate with can influence them positively or negatively. This is why parents try everything possible to keep a close eye on their teens and the kind of friends they associate with in the society. Outside this, teenagers play very vital roles in the society and they are not taken very seriously on what they do, what they can accomplish. The role of a teenage boy or girl in a society should
be taking into consideration; first they are relatively cheap labour. Also, they are the ones responsible for learning, so when they grow into their 20s, they can fix the ills of societies. Next, teenagers are to change the stereotypes associated with them. Every generation grows up into a completely distinct world, depending on when they grew up. There are many teenagers in the society today who are risk-takers and are drawn to adventures and dangers of life. Community, if I will say, plays a measure and important role both in the life of teens and their behaviour. By getting involved with community activities, teenagers can come into contact with like-minded peers and positive adult role models other than their parents. Interacting and cooperating with other adults encourages teenagers to see the world in different ways.

Timibra

I
t was a final filled with suspense, excitements and actions as Rivers State-born Godgift Timibra battled with John Dickson from Bauchi State in the final of the 16th edition of NNPC/ Chevron Junior Masters Tennis finals held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan on Sunday. Timibra came from 2-5 set down to edge out Dickson 7-6, after both players tied on 6-6 set. Speaking after the game, Timibra expressed delight at his victory, but said he was surprised to emerge tops. “I feel very happy to win the NNPC/ Chevron Junior Masters Tennis finals, I did not believe I could win it, but I stepped up my game and by God’s grace I won,” Timibra said. Dickson however expressed sadness for not taking his chances after leading 5-2. “After leading 5-2, I relaxed my play thinking the game was over; I should have finished the game,” Dickson stated with a tinge of regret.
On his plans for the future, the Kadunaborn tennis player said he wants to continue with his education and playing tennis. Timibra outclassed Christopher Otodo of Kaduna State in the semifinals to reach the finals of this year’s tourney, while Dickson booked his final ticket after defeating Tochukwu Eze of Imo State in the semis.

CAF Award:
MUSA TARGETS TOP PRIZE
N
igeria captain Ahmed Musa has tipped himself or compatriot Vincent Enyeama to win this year’s CAF African Footballer of the Year Award. Musa and Enyeama have been outstanding for CSKA Moscow and Lille respectively as well as for the Super Eagles. They are the two Nigeria stars nominated alongside 35 other players across Africa for the continent’s biggest individual gong.
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who is the current holder of the title was also nominated as well as the likes of DR Congo goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba, Andre Ayew of Ghana and Yacine Brahimi of Algeria. Sadio Mane of Senegal, Mehdi Benaria (Morocco), Al Tayeb Modather ‘Karika’(Sudan), Mohammed Salah (Egypt), Nicolas N’Kolou (Cameroun) and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) are some of the players who made the
cut. Nigeria’s failure to make any meaningful impact on the continent’s club football scene meant no Nigerian made the list for the Africa based Player of the Year nomination. “I believe either myself or Vincent Enyeama can win the award this time around. We deserve the nomination and I think we are good enough to win it for Nigeria,” Musa said. “I am happy to be nominated for the African Footballer of the Year
Nigeria Para-Athletics Federation invites athletes for camping award again. It’s a good thing when one gets such recognition because Africa is blessed with lots of good players.” It is the third straight year Ahmed Musa has been nominated for the award. Nwankwo Kanu was the last Nigeria star to be named Africa’s best player in 1999 after Rashidi Yekini (1993), Emmanuel Amuneke (1994) and Victor Ikpeba (1997) won the awards.
Pinnick hails Oliseh after crushing Cameroun
N
FF president Amaju Pinnick has praised Super Eagles Sunday Oliseh after the team bounced back to dump bitter rivals Cameroon 3-0 in a friendly in Belgium. Oliseh and the team came under fire back in Nigeria after they lost their first friendly in Belgium to DR Congo. The coach also would not have endeared himself to Nigerians after his major falling out with Vincent Enyeama. But on Sunday night, they raised their game to soar above the Indomitable Lions in fine style. “I must say that I am very impressed with the performance of the Eagles. It was a good game,” Pinnick said. “I am sure Nigerians were impressed with what they saw. But we have not got there, there are still
some areas that we need to touch but we should all keep supporting the team because the coach seems to have a clear direction of where he is going to. “He is still building a team. And he knows who to add to the team because we do not have a say on who he invites to the team.” Pinnick said Efe Ambrose’s opening goal – a header off a Mikel free kick – was straight from the training ground. “All the goals no one was a fluke. Fortunately all the training sessions that I watched, like the first goal Efe Ambrose got, I saw them do that over and over again,” he said. Oliseh will now switch attention to the CHAN qualifier against Burkina Faso on Sunday in Port Harcourt, where the home-based Eagles have been training since last week.

INTERVIEW Before the August’s World Championships, Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, shows no signs of slowing down. He talks exclusively about staying off the rum, securing his legacy and the one issue he can’t stay laid-back about.
Y
ou’re 29 this year and you’ve been at the top a long time. Do you feel your age, and have you had to adapt? Thanks for reminding me I’m getting old! But I’ll have you know that every three months I visit a doctor in Germany for a full body MOT and I’ve not failed one yet. I’m finding the training harder because my coach is pushing me more than ever. Normally we break in slowly at the start of the season and build up, but this year coach has started me off doing more reps than before, each one faster and with less rest in-between. He wants to shock my body into adapting quicker now that it’s a bit older. I have scoliosis [curvature of the spine] so I also have to make sure I do all my core strength work. How did you cope with an injuryravaged 2014, when you raced only twice? I was lucky it happened in a relative down year. I’d have been more stressed if it had been an Olympic or World Champs year. I missed competing, but I just kept telling myself it would be a mistake to come back too early and that I should use the time to make myself stronger than ever. It helped that people were saying I was finished. It made me want to do my rehab properly so when I came back I could show everyone I’m still here and I’m still the best. How can you ward off injury in future? Me and my coach had a difference of opinion about this and, unsurprisingly, he won. I thought I needed to be gentle with myself and peak at the right time for important races, but he felt, as I’m getting older, that’s more risky, and that I should be in shape all the time. How’s the diet these days? I haven’t had KFC for about four months, which is killing me. I’ve tried to bribe my chef but not only is he not bribe-able, he chases me round the house and makes sure I eat what he’s cooked. He also lays out my vitamin pills and supplements in front of me so I can’t ‘forget’ to take them. I eat a lot more vegetables – and I hate them all. I used to eat them occasionally, but now with every meal I have a plate just
I’M STILL THE BEST
– BOLT
for veg. But I can’t get away any more with just winging it. To perform how I want I have to be perfect in training – and eating right is a part of training – so down it goes. I’ve backed off hard liquor, too – rum and stuff – but I still drink Guinness, or a Heineken or two. A guy’s got to have something, right? Are you still living in a lad-pad with your best friend, NJ? Not any more. I’m close to having a girlfriend now, so I live responsibly by myself in Kingston. How do your family handle your now-insane levels of fame? Most of the time it doesn’t occur to them. The only time it hits home is if we’re out and people come running up to me in the street. That didn’t used to happen, but now even in Kingston I get that. But mostly when we’re together we have the same family dynamic. I’m not Usain Bolt, superstar; but Usain Bolt, their little boy. I go home and lie with my head in Mum’s lap, they send me to shop for groceries, things like that. Last time I was home my Mum clipped my toenails for me! You’re never too old or famous for that. And how do you handle the limelight? Mostly it’s fun. I’m not one of those people who hates the attention. My favourite thing about it is meeting people I regard as legends. I recently met Michael Jordan, which was amazing. For me it’s weird that guys like that even know who I am. There must be downsides, though? Getting asked ridiculous questions by reporters. At the Commonwealth
Games last year I got asked all sorts, from if I would ever wear a kilt, to the outcome of the Scottish independence referendum. Everybody wants to know my every thought on everything, which can get tiring sometimes, but that’s the job. Did you actually call the Commonwealth Games ‘a bit shit’? What do you think? I wasn’t happy about that at the time, but afterwards I laughed about it with my agent, Ricky Simms. If I was going to say something like that, I wouldn’t use that phrase – it’s not a word Jamaicans use. I’d have said ‘crap’, but I didn’t say anything. I’m news and people try to make their name by linking mine with something negative. I can’t help that. What do the next couple of years on the track hold for you? I’ve got the World Championships in Beijing this August, then the Rio Olympics next year. I wanted to retire after that but my sponsors want me to carry on for one more year so I’ll keep going until the London World Championships in 2017, and then retire. The plan in that time is three golds in Beijing, three in Rio to make a triple triple, and then one in London, as I’ll only be doing the 100m. In short, I’m aiming for continued greatness... What motivates you to keep pushing? That’s what my coach has been trying to work out. In the past we’ve sometimes focused on the clock and getting records, other times it has been on medals. Now it’s all about securing
my legacy. I’m already the greatest sprinter of all time, but if I continue to win golds, I could be the greatest athlete of all time. Someone may come along one day and break one of my records, but to beat my legacy they have to beat my whole body of work. So the more I can win, the greater that gets and the harder it will be to overshadow. That’s what’s getting me out of bed now. Anything else? I use fear of failure a lot – it’s a powerful tool. In the past I’d focus just on peaking for major championships, but if you do that too much then on your down times someone may pop up from nowhere and beat you. And being beaten takes some of the shine off your reputation. I’m proud never to have been beaten in a senior championship race since I first broke the 100m world record in May 2008. Are you as hungry as you were? It really is hard to keep focus with all this success, but for me the Olympics are an easy motivation. It’s the biggest show on earth and the sprint events are the biggest part of that show. The World Champs I tend to be more laidback about, but this new way of looking at motivation will hopefully ensure I compete at my best throughout. I no longer think about what the fans want, or who is running what times and who I need to be on the lookout for. I just think about me, and doing my job. Legacy is the main word in my life now and that means if I’m five metres ahead with 10 to go I won’t be slowing down and beating my chest. I’ll be pushing to get
the best time I can, every time. Do you think anybody among your contemporaries can beat your times [9.58s for 100m, 19.19s for 200m]? I don’t think so, but if they do, they’ll only do it once. Anybody can have a great race on one day and I don’t worry about that. To do what I’ve done and win multiple golds, back to back, at World Champs and the Olympics, that’s hard. If I ran 9.4 for the 100m, it wouldn’t be that I’d be most proud of when I retired, or any individual achievement. It would be having been unbeaten for all that time. That said, if I ran under 19 seconds for the 200m... man, I’d love that. I really want that and I think I can do it. Do you think track and field has as big a problem with doping as everyone says? It has a big problem, there’s no doubt about that, but the bans they say they are planning to put in place now are tougher and I totally agree with that. Four years will make anyone think twice. What about your former friend Tyson Gay, who was caught in 2013 but given a reduced ban for cooperating with investigators? I was really upset about that. He got a year just because he talked to the authorities about how it was done and who helped him. That sends the wrong message: ‘If you do it and get caught, just tell us all you know and we’ll lower your ban.’ It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. The message should be: ‘If you cheat you’re going to be kicked out of the sport.’

Barcelona have been impressed by what they’ve seen of Aubameyang and are looking at securing a deal for him in the future. However, they may have to battle Liverpool for the 26-year-old’s signature. The Reds have recently unveiled Jurgen Klopp as their new manager, and the German had a good relationship with Aubameyang during their time together at Dortmund.

azio are the latest side to join the race for Arsenal and Everton target Andriy Yarmolenko. The 25-year-old Dynamo Kiev schemer almost joined Everton this summer, while Stoke were linked with a move for him too. Meanwhile, Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG all hold long-standing interest and it has been reported that he could be on the move when the transfer window opens in January.
Yarmolenko, who was rated at around £13m during the summer, is out of contract in June and able to walk away as a free agent. However, according to reports in Italy, Lazio are preparing a January bid for the Ukraine international and hope Dynamo will be tempted to cash in on him before he leaves for nothing.
ccording to report, English champions Chelsea are weighing up a £20m swoop for Ghana international Baba Abdul Rahman. Rahman was one of the exciting players this term in the Bundesliga where he played a key role in Augsburg’s sixth place finish to secure a Europa League qualification ticket. It has been reported that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has contacted Ghana coach and former Chelsea boss Avram Grant about the 20-year-old left back. The Chile international has been a huge hit since joining the Gunners from Barcelona in a deal worth over £30m last year, with his form justifying the Londoners’ efforts to beat Liverpool to his signature. Sanchez has already hit 21 league goals since his arrival while helping the club to FA Cup glory last term, and it’s
believed that Arsene Wenger values him as one of his key players. And reports claim that Arsenal are willing to reflect that with a new contract that will put the South American ahead of team-mates such as club record signing Mesut Ozil in terms of salary. Sanchez’s current deal doesn’t expire until 2018, but the club are eager to prevent him from entering the last 24 months of his agreement and are keen to reward his form.
