12 killed as soldiers arrest Shiite leader

ÎÎÎNo fewer than 12 people were killed when soldiers besieged the Zaria home in Kaduna State of Ibrahim Zakzaky, the leader of a Shiite Muslim sect, and then arrested him, the Islamic movement said early Sunday. Zakzaky’s arrested and the

killing of 12 of people early on Sunday came on the heels of the killing of seven members of the sect on Saturday afternoon over an attack on the convoy of Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai. About 30 people have also

been reportedly wounded in the Saturday and Sunday incidents, Zeenah Ibrahim, the wife of the group’s leader, told The Associated Press in a phone call interrupted by the sounds of gunfire. Army spokesman Col. Sani Usman said the Shiites on Saturday

afternoon attacked Buratai’s convoy. “The sect numbering hundreds, carrying dangerous weapons, barricaded the roads with bonfires, heavy stones and tires,” Usman said in a statement. “They refused all entreaties to
