Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial World Environment Day
L
ast week, the international community marked the World Environment Day (WED). The event is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations (UN) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The United Nations General Assembly established world Environment Day in 1972. Over the years, it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. The theme for this year’s World Environment Day: “Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care,” focuses on conscious consumption, food waste, water conservation, and energy consumption patterns. It is a fact that the world population has continued to increase with every passing year, bringing in its wake increasing urbanization and pollution. Therefore, the day serves as an opportunity to channel our collective power to treat the planet and its resources responsibly. In 43 years of its history, World Environment Day movement has urged people around the world to save environment, become aware of the threats posed by climate change and take affirmative action. Unfortunately, such admonition has failed to link the message with the economics of living. However, by clubbing the environmental awareness with lifestyle changes, the World Environment Day is bringing attention to one very important issue — economics. Definitely, human existence and its development depend on natural resourc-
es, even as they are scarce and take a lot of time to replenish. In such a scenario, a development model where growth and expansion of economy is based on conspicuous consumption is a sure recipe of disaster. Recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) states that many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change. It concludes that by 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption. It is therefore imperative that people consume natural resources in a way where their needs are met without jeopardising future generation’s ability to meet their own needs. In Nigeria, most of our tonws and cities have turned urban blights due to indiscriminate disposal of refuse and other wastes. These in turn have become the cause of environmental pollution with its attendant health hazards. Others such as waste disposal, bush burning, vehicular emissions, radiation from refrigerators and related harmful ozone substances, industrial waste disposal, kerosene lanterns and deforestation should all be part of the components of the national campaign. We are therefore calling on the government to integrate sustainable consumption and production patterns into national development planning and implementation. Doing so will save the country and citizens from the vicissitudes of environmental degradation.

Unpaid salaries: Will bail out end workers’ nightmare? Sam Nzeh
ÎÎÎCheery as it may ap-
pear, the disclosure at the weekend by Benue State Governor, Samuel Otom, that President Muhammadu Buhari, has agreed to give a bailout to states to enable them pay salaries and settle other debts, gives cause for worry. The bailout may go down the drains just like a substantial part of the monthly allocation received by the states from the Federation Account. As at the last count, no fewer than 18 states owe workers salary arrears
ranging from three to seven months. The situation got to a head in Osun State last week when the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) appealed to church leaders to donate food and money to assist civil servants who have not received salaries for the past seven months. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chapter in the state also expressed its readiness to begin approaching Nigeria’s wealthiest citizens for donations to donate relief items to workers. The unfortunate thing is that while the states in question are unable to pay workers’ salaries, a horde of political office holders in the states get paid

regularly, implying that workers’ salaries are not a priority. Posers: Should President Buhari eventually give a bailout to states to enable them pay salaries, will the governors use it for the purpose it is meant for? Who will monitor the bailout and will governors not divert part of the fund and pay just one or two months’ salary arrears? Therefore, if Mr. President decides to give a bailout to states to pay salaries, stringent measures should be put in place to monitor how the fund is used. This will ensure that governors do not divert part of the fund while still owing workers’ salaries.

Africa under siege – Buhari Egena Egena Abuja
ÏÏÏPresident
Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday declared that the twin evils of terrorism and insecurity as well as poverty, unemployment and under-development had made Africa a continent under siege. Accordingly, the Nigerian leader charged his counterparts from across the continent to poll necessary economic and political resources together in a concerted effort to reverse the ugly trend. Also, the Nigerian president has ordered the immediate release of $21 million (N4.2 billion) to the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF, set up to check activities of Boko Haram insurgents. Buhari made the assertion in Johannesburg,
South Africa, in an address he delivered at the 25th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU). He described as embarrassing, a situation whereby youths from the continent continually got drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in attempts to illegally cross to Europe in search of better life, saying that such incidents were not only dehumanising but also paints an unfavourable picture of the continent. He said: “It is gratifying to note that our Union has made laudable progress over the past one and a half decades since its transformation from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU). “Notably, we have been able to redirect our priorities at the continental level from mainly political goals to more diverse aspirations
that are equally fundamental to our survival and development in a global community. “It is however clear, Mr. Chairman, that some of the greater challenges to our peoples within this Union still lie in the political, economic, as well as peace and security spheres. “Our continent is currently bedevilled by the twin evils of terrorism and insecurity; poverty, youth unemployment, and underdevelopment. The destructive effects of the inhuman and criminal campaigns of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria and neighbouring countries; the Al-Shabab attacks in East Africa, and the activities of the Al-Qaida in the Maghreb, all bear testimony to a continent under siege. “The images in the international mass media of African youths getting
drowned in the Mediterranean sea on their illegal attempts, and often times illusory hope of attaining better life in Europe is not only an embarrassment to us as leaders, but dehumanises our persons. Indeed, they combine to paint a very unfavourable picture of our peoples and countries. “Those of us gathered here today owe it as a duty to reverse this ugly trend. We must put an end to the so-called push factors that compel our young men and women to throw caution to the winds and risk life, limbs and all, on this dangerous adventure. “We must redouble our efforts to sustain the economic development of our countries, ensure empowerment of our youths, create more jobs, improve and upgrade our infrastructure, and above all continue the Continued on page 6

Vincent Uzomah was stabbed in the stomach by a 14-year old pupil during a science lesson at the Dixons Kings Academy in Bradford, on Thursday morning. The youngster was charged with attempted murder at the Bradford and Keighley Youth Court, and he appeared in an Adidas designed black tracksuit on Saturday morning. The pupil, who cannot be named because he’s a minor, stood to confirm his name, age and address, before his defence counsel, Richard Canning, told the court that the teenager denied the charge. The magistrate and chairman of the bench, Gill Arnold, later told the boy of Asian origin, who also faces a charge of possessing cannabis, that his trial would be moved to Bradford Crown Court - because of its higher jurisdiction - where the trial will begin on June 29. Father of two - a boy and a girl - Uzomah, a Civil Engineering graduate of the University of Leeds, was recuperating from the single stab wound to his stomach at the weekend. The boy was arrested around noon, near Bradford City Centre later that day. Sylva urges Nigerians to support Buhari Mathew Dadiya Abuja
ÏÏÏFormer
governor of Bayelsa State and chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is a patriotic and selfless leader who doesn’t look at issues that would benefit people on personal level, calling on Nigerians to give him maximum co-operation to enable him to succeed in his drive to advance the economic potentials of the country. Sylva who served as Co-Chairman of the Presidential Inauguration Committee for the May 29 handover occasion said that the corruption charges re-filed against him by the EFCC is a vindictive fight aimed at smearing his image despite the fact that Justice A. R. Mohammed of the Federal High Court had dismissed the case. He disclosed that during the campaign for the 2015 elections, they faced a lot of challenges especially in Bayelsa and Rivers because many people saw them (APC members) as treacheries adding that “in Niger Delta, a lot of people were against us, writing all kinds of things about us and saying all kinds of things about me that I am enemy number one in the Niger Delta and of the Ijaw people.”

Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) chapter, has shut its doors to patients seeking medical attention, following an indefinite strike action embarked upon by the association. Daily Times gathered that, since last Wednesday, patients
had, in vain, besieged the institution for their health needs. According to a notice of strike by the doctors, dated June 8, issued by the Chairman, Joseph I. Nankat and Secretary, Kumtap Y. Cashmir, they noted that medical doctors in JUTH were being denied what they called “skipping” even when non doctors enjoyed the privilege. NARD also noted that their members were “working under difficult conditions, for lack of
consumables such as hand gloves and some emergency drugs, such as oxytocin.” The association further decried the non-payment of training allowances to resident doctors, shortage of house officers and under payment of the few available ones that had has led to some moving out of JUTH by housemen. Among their four-point demands are the resumption of “skipping” payment, that is of-
fered non-doctors, as well as the provision of essential consumables in the hospital, the immediate payment of outstanding training allowances owed members, employment of house officers and payment of their correct entitlements, which the body said, “will make them return to their duty posts.” The notification was copied board chairman of JUTH, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Chairman,

Paucity of funds crumbles MMIA, PHIA projects Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo constraints have currently stalled the progress of some airport modernisation projects at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos and the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa. These facts were made known at the weekend, when the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Aviation, Mrs. Binta Bello, embarked on inspection tour of ongoing projects. At the power house of the Lagos airport the contractor, Messrs Mantrac Nigeria Ltd has suspended work because it was being owed. Consequently, some generating plants were not operating as the contractor insisted on reimbursement before he would return to site. At the new protocol lounge near the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) where about 80 per cent of
the work had been done, Bello was informed that the contractor was also being owed. Besides, she was told that contract for the landscaping of the surrounding was yet to be awarded. At PHIA, the contractor handling the construction of the departure and arrival halls of the airport, Messrs Inter Bau Construction Ltd, said work on phase 1 (departure) was between 80-90 per cent completion, while work on phase 2 (arrival) “is almost nil.” Chairman of the Company, Sir Nath Okechukwu, said that the second phase of the project was awarded at the cost of N1.7 billion, adding that the last time he received payment for the work was in 2013. “In phase 1, we have done about 80-90 per cent and phase 2 is almost nil. In phase 1, our money got exhausted; we don’t have money, we have to suspend work. In phase 2, the total sum then was N1.7 bil-
lion, but it has gone up, though we don’t know by how much. “We hope very soon they will make some payments so that we may go back to work. The owner of the project has just finished inspection. When she gets back to Abuja then we will know what she is coming up with,” he said. He assured that “if money is made available, we will deliver the project(s) before the current administration marks its first 100 days in office.” Nevertheless, Bello said her mission was to see the projects to know the stages of completion in relation to money spent on them so far. On funding of the projects inspected, Bello assured that “we will look at it and as soon as money is available; the contractors will be mobilised to sites.” On the new terminals at the airports and the level of completion, Bello said: “Work is progressing very well. lawyer, Mr Leo Ekpenyong, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to investigate former Akwa-Ibom State governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, for alleged mismanagement of N3 trillion allocation to the state during his tenure. Ekpenyong, made the call in a five page petition to the EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, obtained at the weekend in Abuja. The petitioner also copied President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase. The petitioner alleged that Akwa-Ibom received statutory allocations amounting to over three trillion naira during the eight years that Akpabio was in power, but the ex-governor spent it recklessly. He claimed that the amount was more than five times what the entire five states of the SouthEast earned from the Federation Account within the same period. He, therefore, urged the EFCC to investigate the Akpabio administration, adding that the government’s “so-called uncommon transformation” programme was not commensurate with what was received. Ekpenyong also alleged that the former governor’s administration had no respect for financial prudence and fiscal responsibility, as all transactions were shrouded in secrecy, culminating in reckless financial mismanagement.

Aregbesola’s dream is to make Osun self-reliant – Okanlawon ÏÏÏThe
Bureau of Communications and Strategy in the state of Osun, on Sunday, said Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s determination is to wean Osun from the culture of dependence on federal allocation, by embarking on key programmes which is being lauded in and outside the country. The Bureau, through a statement by the Director, Semiu Okanlawon, said the government’s approach to agriculture, industrialisation and tourism as well as massive infrastructure provision, were driven by the clear possibility that the sole
reliance on the federal government for states’ survival, would one day throw the country into an economic quagmire of immense proportion. Assuring that before the end of June, workers would be paid their salaries, the statement said from the onset, the Aregbesola administration had set out to ensure that it energise the economy in such a way that proceeds from the economic activities, and taxes from thriving companies in Osun, would drive the economy and not the reliance on allocations from Abuja.
Okanlawon statement explained, “The dream has not gone awry and it is a clear vision that Osun must be on its feet, self-reliant and be a reference point in Nigeria. The race to ensure development within the first term of Aregbesola, was informed by the fear of what is happening now. “Aregbesola wanted an Osun that is self-reliant. That Osun, almost two decades after its creation, could not boast of tax-paying companies, speak volume about the magnitude of the works that awaited the Aregbesola administration.
“But he did not shy away from this task of industrialisation. Within his first term, his government had caused investors to bring up companies such as the Omoluabi Garment Factory, Osogbo, Adulawo/RLG Technology Company in Ilesa. “Just last month, a leading mobile telephone company, Airtel, came to establish partnership with the Adulawo/RLG Company. These are aside the various agroallied companies which have benefited from the growth schemes of the Aregbesola administration throughout the state.

APC leaders divided over Buhari’s one-term pact Continued from page 4 tion before the commencement of the onslaught on the factionalized APC. It was also gathered that the visit to the residence of Atiku by the Senate President Bukola Saraki, shortly after being sworn, was a confirmation that Atiku was one those who pulled the strings for his success at election. Atiku, it was reliably gathered is still eyeing the presidency and the decision of Buhari to run for one term has further given the Adamawa politician the verve to start making contacts across party divides. It was further learnt that the main reason the APC national leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reportedly moved against Saraki was because of the strong opposition of Saraki to Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Yemi Osibanjo as the then running mate to Buhari. Saraki it was learnt, campaigned vigorously for former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi for the position of the Vice President. It took the intervention of former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Abeokuta mansion for peace to peace to reign. Daily Times also learnt that the graveyard silence maintained by the former Rivers state governor on the
National Assembly election was intended to spite Tinubu who was instrumental to the scuttling of his vice presidential ambition. Apart from that, the Tinubu camp up till press time is still not comfortable with the Saraki occupation of the office of the Senate President. The reasoning in the camp is that a Saraki Senate presidency for four years would be too strong for them to overrun in 2019 since President Buhari has decided not to run in 2019. In the unfolding political scenario, the battle line appears drawn between Atiku and Tinubu. Already there are reported moves by Tinubu to truncate the emergence of Atiku as the chairman of the BoT of the party, while Atiku on the other hand is pushing for the leadership of the party using different fronts within and outside the party. The PDP as a party, it was reliably learnt, is not left out of the scheming and permutations for the 2019 elections. The party, according to impeccable sources within the party, has dispatched its foot soldiers across the six geo political zones to mobilize and talk to party members and non-party members on the need to return power to the party in 2019 because of what they described as the false start of the APC since May 29.

Speaking while chairing the Peace Security Council meeting at the 25th African Union summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Buhari said it is time to put an end to the crisis in the African region before the 2020 target. “Our continents is inundated with conflicts of diverse forms. They include the crisis in Burkina Faso,
Mali, Libya, Central Africa Republic, South Sudan, and more recently in Burundi. “As you are aware in 2013 during our 50th anniversary celebration of our union, we as African leaders committed ourselves to the objective of silencing the local guns in Africa by 2020,” he said. Buhari said though achieving a conflict free continent within five years might seems doubtful with the numerous conflicts persisting, efforts must be made for peace to exist. He spoke about the Boko Haram crisis and the global dimension to the crisis and added that countries need to partner to curb the crisis.

These and other measures that engender peace and stability must be pursued relentlessly.” Furthermore, Buhari admonished that African leaders should consequently persist in their collective endeavour to work together through the African Union and their respective Regional Economic Communities (RECs), to uplift the continent and provide the African peoples the enabling environment for the reali-
sation of their legitimate dreams and aspirations. He said in the pursuit of the goals and aspirations of the African Union with a view to liberating the continent from socio-political and economic subjugation, Nigeria would continue to play a pivotal role. “At this juncture, let me assure you of the unflinching commitment of Nigeria to the ideals and aspirations of the African Union as explained in the Agenda 2063, which is geared towards ensuring a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa in the next 50 years. “It is for this reason that Nigeria is fully and irrevocably committed to the
ECOWAS vision. “We do so because we believe that African integration is best attained through the instrumentality of our Regional Economic Communities (RECs) as the building blocs of viable continental institutions. “Nigeria will therefore continue to play her part in supporting the African Union Commission and other continental and regional institutions in their efforts to prioritise African development in all sectors of human endeavour. “The journey might look arduous, but certainly not impossible. There are opportunities in every challenge. If and when we adopt this
call for a change of attitude, approach, and disposition towards agreed protocols and commitments, we shall be bequeathing a politically stable, economically developed, and socially harmonious Africa, thereby justifying the confidence reposed in us by our electorates. We will also demonstrate our qualities as statesmen and true daughters and sons of Africa,” he submitted. Medical services worsened in FMC Owerri

than one month after the crisis rocking the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, health workers have remained adamant in their demand for suspension and probe of the Medical Director, Dr. Angela Uwakem, for her alleged involvement in financial mismanagement of the centre. The lingering crisis has grounded all services in the medical centre as all patients had been moved out of the hospital to different hospitals for medical attention, while many have died as they were left unattended to. Those who could afford it have moved their sick ones to University Teaching Hospital, Enugu, for medical attention, while some pa-
tients have also been transferred to private hospitals in the state. It was learnt that many patients have died as a result of the strike action as they could not afford medical fees outside. It was gathered that the crisis, which led to locking of all the wards, also affected the maintenance of the mortuary, as the attendants have abandoned the place to join in the strike action. Investigation conducted at the weekend revealed that the mortuary attendants shunned people who came to the hospital either to deposit or collect the corpses of their loved ones. Epileptic power supply at the centre is also worsening the condition of the morgue.

Osun: 20 workers die, others stranded over unpaid salaries

have reportedly died and many others stranded in hospitals over the inability of government to pay workers salary. The Chairman, Nigeria Legion, Osun State Chapter, Col Alimi Samotu (rtd), said this while speaking to journalists in Osogbo, the state capital. According to him, those that were sick are stranded in hospital because they could not buy drugs and pay their bills. He, however, appealed to Pres-

Said he: “Not less than 20 of our members have died due to non-payment of their backlog arrears by the Federal Government. We are strongly appealing to the new President of our dear country, Muhammadu Buhari, who is also our member, to please extend his hand of fellowship to us by paying us the arrears before it is too late, as our members are groaning in pain.” The Osun Legion boss complained that his members could
no longer afford three square meals in a day due to non-availability of money. “Although this is an avenue for us to congratulate our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari for his victory, but we are passionately appealing to him for the payment of our arrears”, he added. Land dispute claims 10 in Jigawa Dutse Mohammed Dutse
ÏÏÏLand dispute and confiscation of 56 farmlands of Jobe community, in Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has claimed 10 lives, the spokesman of the community, Alhaji Abdullahi Jobe, has disclosed. Presenting “Save Our Soul” (SOS) mission for prompt Federal Government intervention, on behalf of the communities of Jobe town to Hon. Sani Zorro, a member representing Gumel, Gagarawa, Sule-Tankarkar, and Maigatari Federal Constituency, Jobe said the dispute started when the communities were barred from farming on their inherited farms, and denied payment of compensation to such confiscated farms. “For quite often, we were attacked severally, killed, and most of our belongings being confis-
cated for unknown reasons,” Jobe stated. According to him, the communities employed several measures in the past in resolving the unabated differences amongst them, and Niger Republic officials and their traditional leaders, but to no avail, “hence our resolve to call on Federal Government, through our National Assembly member, Hon. Sani Zorro”. Daily Times reliably gathered that the non-compliance of the Niger Republic traditional leaders and their officials on the plight of Jobe community, might not be unconnected with violation of their territorial integrity that bans inheritance, prompted the confiscation of the 56 inherited farmlands of Jobe community. Other reasons was non-payment of compensation, as most farmers bought the lands for
farming purpose, to earn a living, but they were barred from farming, jeopardising their means of livelihood, leaving them jobless. Responding, Hon. Sani Zorro promised to forward the grievances of Jobe communities to the appropriate authority, stressing “we at our end, being people’s representative, we shall implore all avenues at our disposal in resolving communal disturbances confronting our people.” Daily Times also observed that all is now calm within the area, only awaiting the outcome of Jobe community (SOS) to the Federal G overnment, through the National Assembly. It was gathered that the area has suffered neglect for over 15 years due to frequent skirmishes ranging from land dispute, cattle rustlers, farmers and nomads feud, among other social crisis bedeviling the border town.

Akinwunmi Ambode, on Sunday, paid glowing tribute to the Chairman of Vanguard Media Limited and veteran journalist, Chief Sam Amuka-Pemu, who turned 80 on Saturday. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, the governor said Amuka-Pemu had contributed largely to the upliftment of journalism in the country. Ambode said the publisher’s efforts towards the growth of the Nigerian press were not only evident in how he had spearheaded his newspaper to enviable heights, but also his stance on political stability, accountability and the rule of law. The governor said: “Nigeria has benefitted immensely by the presence of Uncle Sam Amuka in the media, both as a journalist and columnist from the days of the Daily Times group, of which he served as Editor of the Sunday Times. “His then column, ‘Sad-Sam’, stood tall amongst equals as he continuously kept his readers glued to his satirical and literary styled articles, a model he has maintained over the years.

The tragedy of Oyo PDP Akintola Akintola
In 1999, exactly 16 years ago, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) narrowly lost the governorship election in Oyo State to the then Alliance for Democracy (AD) when the late Alhaji Lam Adesina defeated Alhaji Yekini Adeojo. This was perhaps why it was not difficult for the PDP to beat in-
cumbent Governor Adesina four years later, precisely 2003, when it fielded Senator Rashidi Ladoja as its candidate. But then, internal crisis almost immediately started to decimate the party such that by January 2006, the intensity had become so massive that it led to the eventual impeachment of Ladoja from office as governor for 11months.
Of course, Ladoja fought back from the courts and was reinstated into office by the Supreme Court. By the time he came back into office in December 2006, the crisis had taken its toll on the party and his party had already picked its candidate for the 2007 elections. The candidate was no other person than Otunba Adebayo Alao-
Akala, his deputy, who stepped into his shoes after his impeachment. The impeachment, masterminded by the late strongman of Ibadan politics, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu was the last straw that destroyed the bond within the ranks of the party as it pitched members against one another. CONTINUED ON PAGE 9
Why Buhari must declare emergency on jobs, agric, graft, by Arewa chief Arch Kabiru Abdullahi Mohammed, Chairman Arewa Community in Lagos has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice, Professor Yemi Osibanjo to tackle unemployment in Nigeria immediately. He spoke with KWASU ALHAMDU on this and other national issues. Excerpts: Which aspect do you think should be tackled immediately or in phases? They should take the boys and girls roaming the streets out. We have high potentials in humans being untapped in the country; so the president should take this young men and women off the streets and get them employed. The issue of unemployment has become so critical and set for explosion and before the explosion, government must do something urgently. A state of emergency must be declared on the issue of unemployment to get the people busy, get people employed, and get them productive. I could recall Chief Obafemi Awolowo saying at one time that if it happened that there was no job to give people to do, he would line up one set of people to be digging while another set of people will cover it up. These are things people can do to be productive. Government must provide enabling environment for business to thrive for
these people to live meaningfully, through agriculture, mineral resources development, industrial development. When we produce various crops, of course, we also need to process them. This government should also concentrate on processing food into semifinished and finished products thereby the youths would be fully employed. Another major employer of labour, is the basic industry, government cannot afford to stop construction, development must continue, building of housing estates, development of infrastructures so that people can be continuously employed. These are the most important issues we cannot do without. We just have to do it. Sir, you are from the same state with the President, people know him as highly principled. Can he achieve desired change in Nigeria? There is beauty in democracy, Buhari has gone through a period of harmonization in the formation of the APC which was arrived at after series of compromise at different times of this journey. He has also gone through a campaign period which was extended by six weeks. All these are periods that kept the ability to achieve compromise with various components and various interests within the party.
Buhari
This is something Buhari has been able to do successfully and as such, I strongly believe in his governance. He has also gone to apply the same principle in working with various segments with the political parties and inter-
est groups within the country to harmonizing them and bring out the best and how to deliver service to the people of Nigeria. So, I think President Buhari won’t have problem doing that. He will not compromise where the inter-
est of the nation is at stake. Of course, the common man knows very well that Buhari will take the interest of the nation serious. Do you think we have come CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

The picking of Alao-Akala as the party’s candidate did not also help the party as all efforts by Ladoja to retrieve the ticket from Alao-Akala were rebuffed by Adedibu. Thus, the state was set for a rancorous election as Ladoja expectedly worked against the interest of his party and pulled the government resources at the behest of the opposition’s candidate, Senator Abiola Ajimobi then of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). But then Alao-Akala of the PDP won against all odds and even went on to consolidate with victories at the tribunal and the Appeal Court. But then, tragedy struck as the
strongman died and the attempt by Alao-Akala to emerge the leader of the party further polarized the party leading to its dwindling fortunes as many of the leaders of the party saw themselves as leaders in their own rights. Thus, by 2011 when Akala got the ticket of the party for his reelection, many of the leaders went for broke. Ladoja founded Accord party and emerged its governorship candidate. Other leaders like Senator Lekan Balogun, Alhaji Adeojo, Chief Wole Oyelese and others worked against Alao-Akala at the polls. Perhaps, the greatest adversary that Akala had at that time was former Senate leader, Teslim Folarin. They had been the best of friends before the bubble burst.
Thus, the state was set for a rancorous election as Ladoja expectedly worked against the interest of his party and pulled the government resources at the behest of the opposition’s candidate, Senator Abiola Ajimobi then of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP).
Akala
The disagreement had started over Folarin’s plan to return to the senate which Akala opposed. This was because he had a candidate in Jumoke Akinjide, who later became Minister of state for the Federal Capital Territory. During the primaries, a crisis ensued and one of the PDP chieftains, Alhaji Lateef Salako alias, Eleweomo was murdered in controversial circumstances. One way or the other, Folarin was roped in and was detained at Agodi Prisons. All efforts to prevail on Akala to ensure his release proved abortive and it took the intervention of the then Senate President, David Mark who rallied other senators before the senate leader could be released after spending close to a week in prison. Thus, when Folarin regained his freedom, he vowed to send Akala to jail as his own pound of flesh. He was one of those who worked tirelessly with the opposition Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) for the defeat of Akala in the 2011 elections.
The same was with Senator Balogun, Alhaji Adeojo and a host of PDP leaders who worked for the opposition against their own candidate. Expectedly, Ajimobi defeated Akala hands down but still some leaders who were feeding on him worked on him to head for the tribunals that he was certain to win but all to no avail as Ajimobi won all the way to the Appeal Court. The result of the 2011 elections showed that PDP moved from first to second position. Thus, when the 2015 elections approached, PDP leaders assured that they had learnt their lessons and that they would work together. But with the emergence of Folarin as the candidate, the party again broke into factions with each of the gladiators leading its own group as all efforts, even at The Presidency to reconcile them failed woefully. Party chieftains such as Jumoke Akinjide and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, Akola’s former CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

of age in Nigeria for President Buhari to ensure the independence of the judiciary and legislature? Yeah! What is required to achieve that is the right political climate and things will fall in place. It’s only when the center couldn’t hold, then things will fall apart, that was what former President Jonathan faced. Now, with the right crop of people with the president, the power sharing between the judiciary, legislature and the presidency of course things will come into play in the best possible way that the country has ever experienced. This is something that we are very much confident because, when you have the right people and the right political will that are determined to achieve result with a purpose, of course the rest will come in. Most Nigerians want President Buhari to probe the past government most especially, with reference to the missing $20b from the petroleum industry and surprisingly, Mr. President said his government will not witch-hunt anyone. How do you see this? There is no iota of truth in this. The truth of the matter is that a lot of water has gone under the bridge, things have gone to rot for such a long time and the issue of fixing it requires dedication, perseverance and the right political leader. The issue of witch-hunting or not, does not even arise because where it is evidently clear that some things are with some people which are

not supposed to be, because they belong to the public; there are organizations with the responsibility of fighting corruption who will do their job naturally without the president having to say go and arrest so, and so person. No, that is what he said he will never do that. How can that particular issue be investigated? Of course there are others serving in that responsibility, they are doing their work and they will do their work. Whenever they deem it necessary to investigate, they will do it because it is their responsibility. The president is the Commander-inChief, despite being in charge, he is not going to start investigating personally. No, except where the interest of the nation, the interest of the people is being compromised. There are others that are there to purposely do that work and Buhari will not prevent them from doing their job, they will do their work. Unlike the situation in the last government where they will be given no go areas; don’t touch this, don’t touch that, and this was part of what led us into trouble, and a lot of things happened in the past in which certain sections of the country were at the receiving end. For example, Northern Nigeria and the South West were at the receiving end of the Jonathan government. So President Buhari is duty bound to look critically into the issue of development of Nigeria with particular interest and reference to Northern Nigeria because they have been on the receiving
Northern Nigeria and the South West were at the receiving end of the Jonathan government. That is not to say that other areas of the country should be neglected, development should continue across board, but he has to stand his ground and ensure that such anomalies are properly addressed in a country that requires unity in diversity. Will the Arewa Community work with the present government of Lagos? The Arewa are willing to work with the present government. We have been working with the previous governments in Lagos State and we have also stood with the government during the time of needs especially during the election period. The Arewa community came out in all the local

governments of Lagos State and in the South-West and voted massively for the APC. Remember, we came out and endorsed the APC as our party, endorsed General Buhari as our presidential candidate, endorsed various APC candidates in various states as our candidates; so we see them very much as our own and we are very much willing to come out and work with them in different capacities and we are also calling on the government to consider the participation of the Arewa people at various levels, be it political in terms of appointment at different levels, at the state level or in whatever the government is constituting. We will want to see our own people serving in such capacity. When they are appointing commissioners, swearing them in, we want to see our people as part of them. When they are swearing in special advisers, we want to see our people as part of them. So also special assistants, senior assistants, we want to see our people as part of them because
this is where we are born, this is where we live, this is where we pay our taxes this is where we contribute to the development at all levels, the state level and local government level. What message do you have for Nigerians? Nigerians should brace up for government to deliver their need with continuous support including development of various infrastructure in northern Nigeria. We have so many dams that are lying under utilised, so as a matter of urgency, must give backing to agricultural revolution, and an emergency must be declared in the agricultural sector like on the issue of creation of employment and power as well as in fighting corruption. There is no two ways about it. It’s a must and Buhari has no reason whatsoever because Nigerians will not accept any reason for non-performance. We know he is a performer and he is going to perform and he will perform am sure and confident about it.

Ihejirika who served his fatherland meritoriously. “What Ihejirika and other military personnel who staked their lives fighting Boko Haram deserve is commendation and not politically- motivated prosecution”.
His words: “Where was Amnesty International when Boko Haram fighters were annihilating Christians in Northern Nigeria? Where was Amnesty International when Boko Haram was throwing bombs inside churches, mosques, markets, motor parks etc and killing innocent Nigerians? “What efforts have Amnesty International made to bring sponsors of Boko Haram to book? Or will they claim they did not hear

Ohanaeze accused Amnesty International of “bias, hypocrisy and playing double standards”, warning President Buhari to disregard the Amnesty International’s report “if he wants to lead a united Nigeria. “Buhari should choose between leading a united Nigeria and supervising the fragmentation of Nigeria”, Ohanaeze fumed, stating: “They killed the Igbo first General, Aguiyi Ironsi and nothing happened but this time around, any attempt to touch another Igbo General will be vigorously resisted with our last drop of blood.” Ohanaeze queried: “Why did Amnesty International close its eyes and seal its lips when youth corps members from the South were being killed in the North after the 2011 presidential election result was announced? Why did Amnesty International not call for the prosecution of those who supervised the genocide against Ndigbo before, during and after the civil war? Ohanaeze said apart from over 1 million Igbo killed during the
war, Boko Haram and other religious clashes had claimed over 200, 000 Igbos resident in the North with property worth over N2 trillion. “Why is Amnesty International turning a blind eye to the systematic genocide against Igbos in the North and the gradual annihilation of Middle Belt communities by Fulani cattle rearers? “That power has returned to the North does not mean that other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria will become slaves. Nobody should use Amnesty International to intimidate anybody unless they have agreed that we are tired of this forced union called Nigeria. We cannot become beggars because Jonathan lost election, and we have no regrets making our choices in the last election. South East and South South are integral parts of Nigeria and cannot be treated as slaves”, Isiguzoro said. The Ohanaeze leader also warned General Theophilus Danjuma ( retd.), and Noble Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka against their “serial anti- Igbo comments”, saying, “we have been carefully studying these unwarranted attacks and will take a position very soon. deputy worked against PDP also during the polls. With this, Akala moved over to Labour Party and emerged its governorship candidate; Ladoja stuck with his Accord Party and was made the governorship candidate while Seyi Makinde also moved to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and became its governorship candidate. So, what was once a formidable force broke into four small groups unable to confront the incumbent governor, Ajimobi now of the stronger All Progressives Congress (APC) who romped into victory with a comfortable win at the polls. Ajimobi polled 327 320 votes to emerge winner. His close rival was former gov-
ernor Ladoja of Accord party who polled 254 520 votes, and was followed by Labour Party’s former governor Alao-Akala who got 187 111 votes. PDP’s Folarin polled a distant 79,019 votes, while the SDP candidate, Makinde got 54,740 votes. Ajimobi thus became the first governor in the history of the state to break the second term jinx. No other governor has ever performed the feat. The tragic thing is that the once ruling party in the state came fourth at the polls. This was against what some leaders said shortly before the polls. Former Sports Minister, Professor Taoheed Adedoja was cocksure that the PDP will win as the leaders had learnt their lessons
and they have all agreed to work for Folarin. Speaking in the same vein, Senator Lekan Balogun was optimistic that Ajimobi would be defeated as the PDP leaders were unanimous in their support for Folarin whom he said would win comfortably as they have learnt their lessons the hard ward having been out of government for four years adding that they could not afford another four years outside government. However, it all turned out otherwise with the party performing woefully to the consternation of all. So, who will reform Oyo PDP? For now, nobody appears to be thinking about this as most of the leaders are still smarting from the last stinging defeat?

Amnesty International had called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands to investigate some former and serving Nigerian service chiefs for war crimes. The crimes, according to AI were perpetrated during the fight against Boko Haram in the North-East between March 2011 and 2014. It said in a comprehensive report, entitled, “Stars on their shoulders, blood on their hands: War crimes committed by the Nigerian military, “that no fewer than 8,000 persons were “murdered, starved, suffocated and tortured to death in the NorthEast during the period”. AI in the report said that it had “compelling evidence” for the investigation of the former and serving Service Chiefs as well as “middle-level and senior-level military commanders.”

HURIWA gave the advice in a statement to the media against the backdrops of reports that the Vice President could not be ‘cleared’ by security chiefs to attend security briefings with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The group said it was unconstitutional for Osinbajo to be subjected to the so-called security clearance before he could attend a security meeting. Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, National Coordinator and Miss Zainab Yusuf the National Media Affairs Director, who endorsed the statement jointly faulted the claim that Osinbajo could not be cleared because he lacked cognate security experience. South African court bids to arrest Sudan's Omar al-Bashir
President Bashir, centre, posed for a group photograph at the start of the summit
ÏÏÏA South African court has
issued an interim order stopping Sudan's leader Omar al-Bashir, who faces war crimes charges, from leaving the country. The Pretoria High Court says Mr Bashir must stay until it rules on Monday on whether he should be handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC). President Bashir is in Johannesburg for an African Union (AU) summit.
Bus crashes in Egypt, kill 23 ÏÏÏOfficials
say two separate road accidents in Egypt on Sunday have killed 23 Egyptians and injured 17 others. Husam Gamil, director of emergency services for the Red Sea governorate, says one accident occurred when a passenger bus flipped over near the resort city of Hurghada, killing 11 people and injuring 11 others. Major General Mohamed Ismail, a local security director, said 12 people were killed and another six injured when their minibus collided with a truck carrying construction materials near Wadi Natrun, some 125km northwest of Cairo. Deadly road accidents claim thousands of lives in Egypt every year. They are mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or lack of regular vehicle maintenance. Road accidents killed about 14 400 people in Egypt last year.
He is accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide during the Darfur conflict. Earlier President Bashir was welcomed by South African officials as he arrived in Johannesburg. After the court announced the hearing, he posed for a group photo with other African leaders. The High Court initially said it would hear the request to have him arrested on Sunday. But it
later postponed the hearing until Monday - when the summit is due to end. There are tensions between the ICC and the AU, with some on the continent accusing the court of unfairly targeting Africans. The AU has previously urged the ICC to stop proceedings against sitting leaders. The warrants against Mr Bashir, who denies the allegations, have restricted his overseas
travel. He has, however, visited friendly states in Africa and the Middle East. AU leaders have complex issue to try to tackle, from political unrest to Islamist insurgencies South Africa has often shied away from this sort of diplomatic headache, but this time the government has stepped straight, and deliberately, into controversy, courting Western fury by rolling out the welcome carpet for President Bashir. The South African government must, surely, have foreseen the possibility of a legal challenge. If President Bashir is allowed to return home unimpeded, South Africa's actions will be bitterly condemned internationally - if less loudly within the continent - as a blow against the credibility of the ICC. And if Sudan's president is detained, or perhaps even arrested, then Pretoria will be accused of luring a fellow African leader into a trap. Some would call that a nowin situation. But it's clear that South Africa's government has chosen to flaunt its growing antipathy towards "Western" rules, and towards a court in which so many African leaders now appear to have lost faith.

Israel released its own report, saying Israeli forces did not intentionally target civilians and accusing Gaza's Islamic Hamas rulers of deliberately attacking Israeli civilians while using their own people as human shields. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri called the Israeli report "worthless." The Palestinians have accused Israel of violating the rules of war, which include giving adequate warning to civilians, using proportionate force and distinguishing be-
tween civilians and combatants. The U.N. Human Rights Council report is expected to be released this week. Meanwhile, an unofficial report compiled by 11 former chiefs of staff, generals and other senior American and European officials came to similar conclusions as the Israeli report. The generals' report said, "None of us is aware of any army that takes such extensive measures as did the [Israeli military] last summer to protect the lives of the civilian population in such circumstances." Both reports say Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched attacks from residential areas in Gaza. Launched last July after a surge of indiscriminate crossborder rocket fire by Hamas and its allies, Israel's 50 days of
shelling, air strikes and ground incursions in the congested enclave killed more than 2,200 Palestinians, while 73 people died on the Israeli side.

Ghana flood damage estimated over $100m ÏÏÏGhana's president says flood-
ing earlier this month that led to a huge explosion at a gas station in the capital caused over $100m in damages. Speaking with journalists on Friday night, John Dramani Mahama said the "conservative figure" was an estimate. He said a final report on the June 3 disaster that killed at least 160 people was still being prepared. Officials have said the blast occurred after flooding swept fuel being stored at the gas station into a nearby fire. Mahama said many of the 36 000 people affected by the flooding have been unable to return to their homes. The deaths highlight Ghana's need for a modern drainage system, Mahama said, adding that a ban on drain-clogging plastic bags is under consideration.
20 militants killed in Pakistani airstrikes ÏÏÏPakistan's military said Sat-
urday that airstrikes had killed 20 suspected militants in a troubled northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border, as part of a major offensive in that area. A statement said the strikes killed insurgents in the Datta Khel area in North Waziristan. The information could not be independently verified because the region is off-limits to journalists. Pakistan's army began a major campaign against the Taliban and other militant groups in the North Waziristan tribal area one year ago. It said the offensive had killed about 2,800 militants and had left nearly 350 soldiers dead. A spokesman, Major General Asim Bajwa, said troops had cleared militant strongholds, communication infrastructure and sanctuaries in the tribal belt, especially in the North Waziristan and Khyber tribal districts. He said the offensive was now focusing on the last few pockets close to the Afghan border, noting the militants were being denied the ability to reestablish bases there. The spokesman added that thousands of suspected terrorists had been detained elsewhere in Pakistan based on intelligence information gathered during the military activity under way in the northwestern border region.

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, has faulted Governor Ayo Fayose over failed promises to pay their salaries, saying endless workers verification exercise, designed to keep faith with the government, was a wicked tactic to secure workers' cooperation in the state. In a statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, and made available Daily Times in Ado Ekiti, the party accused the governor of deliberate falsehood on the state's financial status, saying the governor had no excuse to owe workers' salaries. According to Olatunbosun, "We have heard the governor saying
that the state was broke and we can't find merit in that declaration, because savings in all the empowerment schemes cancelled by the governor, the number of workers in thousands that were sacked, and drastic cuts in the allowances and running grants of workers, including traditional rulers, would have saved the state millions of naira.” The APC spokesman noted that former governor Kayode Fayemi, carried out verification exercise only once through biometric auditing that brought sanity to wage payment system, wondering why after Fayose did verification exercise three times within seven months, the governor was still subjecting workers to unnecessary verification contraption. "We in APC pity the workers,
including pregnant women, who queue endlessly in the sun waiting to do this ill-conceived verification exercise. The governor assured that 48 hours after the exercise, the cleared workers would receive their pay. But two months after some workers completed the exercise, the governor has refused to pay, instead, he is keeping workers on queue for hours in the sun for the salary that would not come. As a result, the workers have become confused, dejected and despondent, “the APC spokesman said. Olatunbosun, however, urged Fayose to come clean on how he had been spending Ekiti money, saying rhetoric on state's indebtedness was a callous way to deny the workers their entitlements, while the governor was enjoying
his personal life. He said: "Ekiti people have heard how N650 million is being deducted from source to pay the governor's election contractors. For six months, Fayose didn't pay kobo on the purported Fayemi's over-bloated debts. Savings in millions are made from cuts in workers and Obas' allowances and running grants, including the savings in millions from thousands that lost their jobs. Social security for 20,000 elders was also cancelled by the governor. "Many youth’s empowerment schemes that cost Fayemi millions of naira were cancelled by Fayose. Streetlights supply is now for three hours daily. Fayemi ran it for 12 hours. Fayose has stopped funding security agencies which has led to high crime rate in the state.

Reagan Ufomba, on Sunday, gave reasons why he withdrew his petition at the governorship election petition tribunal, sitting in Umuahia, challenging the candidacy of Dr. Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in the just-concluded governorship election in Abia. Chief Ufomba told the Daily Times in Umuahia that it was to enable him face the matter which is now at the Appeal Court. The petitioner said, following the judgement of the tribunal, took the matter to the Appeal, stating that the matter cannot be at the tribunal and at the same time at the
Appeal court or “we may lose both. “To remain safe, we decided to withdraw one and face the other to avoid the abuse of court processes. We are continuing with the process at the Appeal Court”. The chairman of the tribunal, Hon. Justice Usman Bwala, struck out the petition after considering an application brought by Ufomba’s counsel, Mr. Clement Onwuenwunor, seeking to withdraw the petition. Bwala ruled that the petitioner reserved the right to withdraw his petition and declined to award any cost to the respondents, including Otti, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APGA and its former Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh.
He expressed delight that one out of the three petitions before the tribunal had been disposed of and commended the legal teams of the litigants for their professionalism, maturity and peaceful conduct. Onwuenwunor said that his client decided to withdraw the petition ‘’in order not to abuse the court process.’’ He said that Ufomba filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, Owerri, challenging the decision of the Federal High Court, Umuahia, which struck out his suit challenging his exclusion in the governorship election by INEC. In the earlier petition, Ufomba had claimed in the suit that he was the authentic governorship candidate of APGA in the election and not Otti.

gressives Congress (APC) to fault the emergence of the leadership in the National Assembly has been criticised by the National President of the Road Transport Employer Association (RTEAN). the group said that the choice of leaders should be left for elected members to decide who leads them. Chief Musa Isiwele, who addressed newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, said the solution to the recent disagreement at the National Assembly was for the All Progressives Congress to re-strategise and clean up some of the perceived differences in the party. According to him, “The first thing to do is to clean up the mess, manage the situation, douse the tension and achieve early solution to the emerging political face-off in the party. “Let me also say that as far as the leadership of the APC and the membership, as well as the political leaders are concerned, the crisis is not beyond management.”

APC and its many headaches
T
Gbenga Awoyale
here is no doubt that the scenario at the inauguration of the eighth Assembly, which finally paved way for the emergence of Dr. Bukola Saraki, as the Senate President is a suicide mission to the All Progressive Party (APC). This is actually, what I can describe as hurry divorce of couples that married inconveniently under pressure, hatred or cheap promises. The current situation has indeed positioned our country comfortably sitting on the keg of gunpowder precipitating the emergence of desperate leaders whose major concern is putting their personal interest above national interest, which is not in the best interest of the masses. Although, I am extremely persuaded and fulfilled about my revelation, which I’ve made earlier on, the desperation of Bukola Saraki to clinch and wield power at all cost not minding its consequence(s) on the existing unity of the country and people. For me, the stability and focus of President Buhari’s administration is far more important to us than the vibrancy of Bukola Saraki’s Senate presidency interest. It is clear that PMB was ready to enforce
law against corruption. It is clear that PMB was ready to reduce cost of governance for the good of the entire nation. It is also an good thing that the retired Daura-born General was ready to close all gaps against mal-adminstration amidst terrible threats occasioned by the Boko Haram insurgency. Unfortunately, the antecedence of Saraki’s political legacy and his desperate urge to lead the Senate portrayed him as a questionable character who cannot assist this administration to achieve its set goals, thereby revealing his sinister motives. Nevertheless, I would care less how and what anyone feels about the stability of the Buhari presidency, as long as the outcome justified the means, and the means were fair, viable, and destined. However in its bids to ensure probity and corrupt-free administration, the leadership of the APC in its wisdom conducted mock election for the two contending lawmakers with cognisance look at the integrity and records of the men. At the poll, Senator Ahmed Lawan of Yobe North was declared winner and sole candidate of the APC. Meanwhile, in order to achieve his inordinate ambition, Saraki he hurriedly returned to his divorced
bride seeking for supports ahead of the D-day. Although, it is a pay back time for the erstwhile opposition party now ruling party(APC) when one of its defunct legacy party, Action Congress of Nigeria ( ACN) played prominent roles in the election of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to become the Speaker of the 7th House of Representatives against the calculation of the PDP for the emergence of Hon. Mulikat AkandeAdeola. What goes by comes by. It is also evidently clear that the group of lawmakers who purportedly nominated and inaugurated Saraki as the President of the 8th Assembly are set of corrupt exgovernors who wanted to frustrate PMB’s anti corruption crusade. This was one of my major concern when I opined in an earlier article advising the president to show leadership in this direction, because in a democracy, political party supremacy should never be taken for granted. In all, Saraki’s aspiration to become the Senate President is not in anyway bad as party-man but it is absolutely disastrous on the desired positive change clamoured for by Nigerians because he has no political ideology or trust. Senator Saraki has so far sojourned from the APP to the PDP
to the nPDP to the APC, demystifying his own biological father in the process. He cannot be trusted with any relationship. In 2012, Saraki was accused of corruption by the EFCC. I am persuaded that in May 2013, he used the Nigeria Governors’ Forum as his arm and its governor-chairman as the whip to lash an international embarrassment into ex-President Jonathan’s senses. The man Jonathan will never forget what hit him because from thence, things ‘changed’ for him. The man Saraki contested the 2011 PDP presidential primaries, which means he has his eyes on the presidency. In addition, in these days when the legislature loves to impeach an executive with his deputy, as Senate President, he would only be one step away from the Aso Rock Villa. Nigerians are hurriedly waiting for anti-graft agents to dust their stores and check corrupt file records for adequate prosecution of concerned lawmakers. Therefore, the current happening to APC is one of the many nemeses of getting married to strange groom without minding her past, present as well as considering her likely future. Chief Gbenga Awoyale is the President General of Orisun Igbomina, Kwara state.
Securing the change before it becomes a strain

olitics in Nigeria is not based on “ideology” rather ethnic loyalty; godfathers and power-corruption are the bases of our political parties. We can argue if ideology based platform is better than ethnic loyalty or vice-versa. That would be for another day. Nigerians (at home and abroad) were tired of the Jonathan administration, they wanted “change” - PDP was not the main problem, but those governing, although the president himself might seem nice, those around him overshadowed him and made him look like a weakling. The disenfranchised godfathers who left PDP and regional godfathers, who sought power nationally, came together to form a convenient national party. They did a good job putting together a ticket but most suspected the godfathers working behind the scene - all one needed was to see the campaign pictures, and the positioning to be prominent in pictures as victory became inevitable. After inauguration, the president fired the first salvo warning all the godfathers that his administration would not be beholding to anyone
- he knew those he was addressing and they heard him loud and clear. The intrigue of the convenient coalition did not last long and the president’s statement was tested - when factions of the godfathers played a brilliant political chessgame with senate and house leadership positions. The Tinubu faction based on sheer number swept the intra-party primaries for key positions, while the Atiku faction pulled a fast one - they had dinner with the devil, since they decamped from PDP, they convinced current “soon to be irrelevant” PDP leaders, to cooperate for a pot of porridge. While these intrigue amazes and tells of a matured political system, it is however dangerous because our politics is not based on ideology rather on “what have you done for me lately”. If not curtailed, the godfather factions would not only ruin the convenient coalition, it will put a strain and in chain, the change Nigerians voted for. Here are recommendations for the Buhari Administration; separate and protect your administration from politicking. While your executive council would be party nominated, let each person know that once they are sworn in, party loyalty takes a back seat to
governance. Do not let any of the godfather factions disrespect your administration? If the statement credited to Senator Saraki is true about your VP “as a commissioner”, then he must apologise or be sanctioned. As a former military general - you know what happens when insurbodination is allowed within the ranks. To shield yourself from party politics, set up a committee of elder statesmen, to always deal with party issues that APC chairman cannot handle (since he is also a member of a faction). This step is critical because constant whining by the godfathers would sap your energy and hinder your agenda. Empower your vice-president. In the science of communication, tone and non-verbal acts are much more important than content. Looking at pictures from the campaign, during and after inauguration, it seems the VP is timid - it might just be his personality, but something tells me there are some dirty things going on behind the scene. Unconfirmed report has it, that the VP is not trusted with national security issues - that is laughable and idiotic if true. Second, the insult from Saraki, himself the product of silver spoon to the new VP is very telling.
I have learnt as an independent that is motivated by ideology that no politician can be trusted. I have supported both side of the aisle and I have fought both side of the aisle. The change Nigeria wants can only be achieved first through our continued prayer, because we had a great election and history was made does not mean we relax, the enemy against Nigeria is not taking a break. Then we must learn to hold our government accountable - it seems we are doing that now, but I am afraid we are leaving it to kids whose immaturity and closeness to power is “shacking” them. Everyone must step in, to criticize injustice and corruption. When a godfather is making governance difficult for personal gain, we must all condemn that godfather with one voice. The success of this administration is first in the hand of God, who gave us all hope and we must now get closer to Him. Then we must support this administration when necessary and condemn when necessary. It is my prayer that this administration would not disappoint as the immediate past administration, but that they succeed, not just for them but also for our country.

NASCON rebranded to take-over allied food sector – Dangote Charles Okonji
L-R: Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Amb. Abdulkadir Musa, Director, Weights and Measures Department, Engr. Adeyinka Sikuade and Principal Legal Metrology Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ateji during the inspection of filing stations in Abuja.
Chairman of NASCON Plc, Aliko Dangote has attributed the recent rebranding of the company culminating in the change of its name to NASCON Allied Industries to the need for it to reflect its production of new range of consumables and its projection to become a leader in the allied food sector. As a leading salt manufacturer in Nigeria controlling more than 60 per cent of the market, NASCON was incorporated in Nigeria as a limited liability company on 30th April 1973; became fully privatised in April, 1982 and was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange on October, 1992. Chairman of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote in his speech at the annual general meeting of NASCON Allied Industries for the financial year ended December 31, 2014 held in Lagos, recently, informed shareholders that the new name has received the approval of the Corporate Affairs Commission. The chairman dwelling on milestones in the year under review said, “as promised at the 2013 annual general meeting, I am happy to announce that our
Company has already launched the DANG Seasoning in year 2014 and it is heartwarming that the product is acceptable in the market. “Efforts are also in top gear to ensure that other new products, tomato paste and vegetable oil are completed as soon as possible and launched for entry into the respective markets. The technical hitches militating against the early completion of the two new projects have been surmounted”. He added, “We have almost completed the installation of our vegetable oil refinery and the tomato packing machines at our site in Ota. These products when fully introduced into the market will make us a frontline food business in Nigeria.” Shareholders at the meeting applauded these strategic steps saying it will translate into increasing returns. A shareholder, Kazeem Olayiwola described the new investments as heartwarming and will translate into more values for stakeholders. Another shareholder, Sotunde Sopeju also commended the management for turning around the fortunes of NASCON which has now gone beyond salt refining.
FG commences inspection of meters in fuel stations Charles Okonji The Federal Government has commenced the inspection of meters and measuring weights in all economic sectors to enforce the metrology law and bring defaulters to book. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Abdulkadir Musa led an inspection team of Weights and Measures department to enforce legal metrology law in filling stations for under dispensing petrol to customers in Abuja. During the inspection at the Mobil filling station, Lugbe, Airport Road, it was discovered that the dispensing pumps at the
station short-changed customers form their two operational dispensing pumps by two litres 69 mls for every 20 litres of PMS (17.31 as 20 litres), while other dispensing pumps dispensed 18.66 litres for every 20 litres. Other filing stations inspected by the team were NNPC Sabon Lugbe, NNPC, Durumi, Area 1, Total Filing station, Herbert Macaulay way, Forte Oil Olusegun Obasanjo Way, and Total filing station, Wuse zone 6. NNPC filing station Sabon Lugbe one pump was sealed for re-caliberation and others were within tolerance level stipulated by law. Abdulkadir reiterated that government is committed to the enforcement of legal metrology
laws in all sector of the economy adding that government would not tolerate anybody to cheat customers because they are desperate to get fuel. He added that, it is not only in the oil sector that Nigerians we feel the impact of the department but also in the operation of the Automated Payment Machine (ATM) in the banking sector and telecommunication as well as correct measurement in the market. “Whatever we are doing now is to send messages to those defaulters that we are now standing on our feet and we are now going to be effective in regulating weights and measurements act in the oil and gas sector. I
assure you that what happened in the past will no longer be because now, Nigerians know what we can do. We had synergize with the oil major and stakeholders in the sector and they are well informed of our statutory responsibilities of ensuring that trade is fair, correct and transparent” “As a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, I do not belief in sitting down behind the board to read reports written by my staff, I wanted to see my men in action to ensure compliance with weights and measurements act and I really commend them for their dedication and effort in view of limited funds and staff.”
Director Weights and Measures, Engr. Adeyinka Sikuade while addressing journalists said that it was extremely disappointing that motorist were being short changed in the filling stations and that the department will continue to embark on such exercise throughout the federation in order to established that marketers conform with fairness and standards. “On penalty for defaulters now, we still have stronger area that prevents such erring stations from operating by sealing them or removing their nozzles and ensuring that they cannot conduct any business from such pumps until it is corrected.” Sikuade stressed.

Alarmist reports capable of instilling flying phobia— Air Peace boss The chairman of Air Peace, Mr Allen Onyema has urged media organisations to eschew sensational reporting on incidents involving airlines. He said such misrepresentations about airlines and their aircraft could trigger phobia in the minds of the flying public, a development he explained could have ripple effects on air safety and the growth of the industry. Onyema spoke against the backdrop of the incident involving Aero Airlines aircraft, when the pilot in command professionally initiated diversion of the aircraft to Abuja due to depressurization. The Aero aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Lagos to Kaduna. Onyema said the way a section of the media reported the incident was a misrepresentation of what transpired during the flight. He said: “It was an unfortunate publication. Though it was not Air Peace but another airline – Aero; I could feel their pain, the way the story was reported .The report-
age was alarmists and could scare the flying public. Media houses should exercise professional restrain in matters of aviation because of sensational reports. This could have ripple effects on the domestic airline sector. “ He stated that the report was totality misleading and a far cry from what happened during the Aero flight. “Media organisations should realise they are stakeholders in aviation by carrying out constructive and developmental reporting to grow the aviation sector. “The publication on the aircraft incident was unprofessional. The pilot acted professionally by following procedure by bringing the aircraft to a lower altitude. The pilot came down to 10,000 feet to where there is lower pressurization. It is a non-issue. Passengers should stop raising false alarms. This has the tendency to scare the flying public. “This is not good in Nigeria because passengers already have phobia for flying.
Stakeholders stress importance of air traffic controllers Book reviewers have identified the role of Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) in Nigeria as the key to safety and economic management. Speaking in Abuja during the weekend at the presentation of a book titled ‘The Air Traffic Controllers’ Senator Bala Ibn Na Allah said the role of the ATC cannot be ignored considering the pivotal role played before, during and after any flight. According to Senator Na Allah, Nigerians will soon start acknowledging the importance of the ATC in the country adding that in few years from now that many Nigerians will embrace flying as it remained the fastest and safest. He urged Nigerians to accord the ATC their necessary position with regards to the role they play. While commending the author for writing the book, Senator Na Allah noted that many people were scared in writing about aviation as a result of the technicalities involved.
Reviewing the book, Professor Rebecca Ndana of the Biological Sciences University of Abuja, said the book was timely as little or nothing was known about the ATC. Prof. Ndana said the book will be a guide for every citizen on the role of the ATC stressing that the ATC ought to be paid more than any other worker in the country considering their roles. She recommended the book to all in the chain of service delivery in the airline industry stressing the need for the introduction of ATC in the curriculum of schools in the country to educate them on their activities. Gideon Gaza, the author of the book said he was inspired to write the book based on the perception by the public about the ATC. Gaza explained that as an ATC, that he has been humiliated several times by the public as a result of ignorance about the profession.
Dana Air settles out of court with ground victim Stories by Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo
One of the ground victims, whose property was destroyed in the Dana crash of June 3, 2012, Pastor Daniel Omowumi has said that he has agreed to settle out of court. Omowunmi in 2012 had demanded to be paid N500 million as compensation for his damaged property.
He had alleged that four months after the accident which claimed about 160 lives both on board the aircraft and on ground and destroyed his property, the management of Dana Air had been playing hide and seek game with him. He listed the property to include; a six-bedroom duplex, fourbedroom bungalow and two standard warehouses located at 8/10 Popoola Street, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos were completely destroyed by the crash.
The clergy man, explained that he and Dana Airlines had resolved two issues and that it was only one that was left. The clergyman, who did not state the issues that were settled and the only issue that was left unresolved, added that he had also agreed to settle the matter out of court in the interest of both parties. He disclosed that he had also settled with the government on the issue but did not provide de-
tails, just as he commended his lawyer for handling the case satisfactorily. It would be recalled that on June 3, 2012 at about 15:45 hours, a Boeing MD-83 aircraft with registration number 5N-RAM on a domestic scheduled commercial flight operated by Dana Airlines crashed into a densely populated area following a loss of power on both engines while on approach to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Eko Disco to raise electricity tariffs ... Invests N52 billion on Smart Meters procurement Yinka Olujimi The management of Eko Electricity Distribution Plc at the weekend announced plans for increase in tariffs. This is to enable the company meet power supply within its network, according to the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Oladele Amoda. He told a stakeholders’ consultative forum in Lagos that the plan is also in view of the prevailing economic situation in the country.
Amoda said that the essence of the forum was to rub minds with customers within its network on the needs for the company to adjust its electricity tariffs to be more ``cost reflective’’ on its operations. “Nothing good comes easy,” he said, adding that the company has invested heavily to sustain and enhance operations towards improving services to customers. Amoda said: “There is need to sustain continuous investment and we have called for this meeting in order to consult with our customers on our proposed adjustment in tariffs, to partly meet the reality of the prevailing economic situation. ``The company is being run at
a loss since inception because our investors had invested lots of money into the system” which has little effect on the supply distribution chain to customers. He continued: “When you look at the economy indices, there is high increase of dollars in terms of exchange rate, while other things had also gone up. Much of our equipment like transformers, cables, lines etc. is being imported, the effect of rising in dollars has affected the cost of the materials.” Gas supply is also another issue which has also been increased drastically by the gas suppliers because they feel reluctant to sell gas to industrialists due to price differential,’’ he said.
Energy nations better watch out as Saudis open stock market Maria Levitov Come Monday (today), global equity markets will wake up to a new $558 billion magnet pulling cash out of developing nations from Russia to Malaysia. As Saudi Arabia lifts a ban on direct investments by foreigners, fund allocators are preparing to shift money out of other countries and put it to work in the Arab world’s largest stock market. While there’s little consensus on which country will be the biggest loser, money managers mostly agree that energy producers will feel the heaviest effects. Below are the views of emerg-
ing-markets investors and strategists on what to expect: Martial Godet, head of emerging-market equities and derivatives strategy at BNP Paribas SA in Paris: Saudi Arabia “will not be a bargain, but it can be a nice diversification from emerging Asia that has become increasingly large within emerging markets. The biggest losers will be markets associated with oil and energy: Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Indonesia, and Malaysia.” Maarten-Jan Bakkum, senior emerging-markets strategist at NN Investment Partners in The Hague:
“Investors will eventually sell a bit across the board to get to a decent weight in Saudi Arabia. There might be a bit more selling in other oil countries, but then we should ask ourselves what are the pure oil plays in emerging-markets, comparable to Saudi Arabia? Only Russia comes close.” Charles Robertson, global chief economist at Renaissance Capital Ltd. in London: “The United Arab Emirates and Qatar may suffer. After Saudi Arabia’s inclusion in MSCI EM, investors might think: why bother looking at small Qatar when you can choose Saudi to be your Gulf proxy?”
Amoda said that the prices in the past were supposed to cover cost but they did not cover all the cost of losses, adding that the losses were partly because of old wires in the network. He said: ``There is no way we can have stable power supply without adjusting our tariff, because currently we are running at loss. ``Except government stabilises gas prices and other things like importation. That is the only way the adjustment will be recalled. ``We cannot just commence an increase of electricity prices without informing the regulators which would in turn fix the appropriate tariffs pricing because it’s a 10-year tariff plan,”
Amoda added. The Eko electricity boss said that the company had invested about N52 billion for metering of its customers in the next five years, adding that management plans to deploy about 50,000 meters before the end of the year. He said that over the next five years, the company would have installed about 644,000 smart meters while about 250,000 new customers would have been connected with meters. He said that over N10 billion had been spent so far on network rehabilitation, reinforcement, improvement and assets upgrade, adding that the company received about 250 megawatts from the national grid as against 700 megawatts required.
Eskom’s Sere Wind Farm goes into full commercial operation The Sere Wind Farm from Eskom, the South African electricity public utility, recently achieved its full commercial operational capacity of a 100 MW. The achievement of this milestone in the Western Cape of South Africa is in line with the commitments made by Eskom in terms of both time and cost. The African Development Bank approved in 2011 a USD 45 million loan with USD 50 million contribution from the Clean Technology Fund, one of the Climate Investment Funds, CIF, for this first utility scale renewable energy project. The World Bank and
the French Development Agency also contributed to the financing of the project.Brian Molefe, Eskom’s Acting Chief Executive, said, “Sere is Eskom’s first largescale renewable energy project, and forms part of our commitment to renewable energy and reducing our carbon footprint. The Sere plant adds 100 MW to the national power grid and contributes to saving nearly 6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions over its 20 years’ expected operating life, with average annual energy production of about 298,000 MWh, enough to supply about 124,000 standard homes.”

BEDC, Elizade varsity sign MoU on human capacity advancement Adesola Akindele The Benin Electricity Distribution Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, to promote human capital development in the power sector. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BEDC, Mrs. Funke Osibodu, told journalists in Benin, Edo State, that the MoU was part of efforts of the Disco’s core investor, Vigeo Power Ltd, to train new and existing personnel of the firm on best technical practices for addressing the needs of electricity consumers in
the country. Osibodu according to a statement explained that the five-year partnership would cover the cost of training facilities in the university and remuneration of staff drawn from both in-house academy and the private institution. She said that the Disco had recruited about 200 graduates in relevant fields in electricity management who had received on-the-job and rotational training and were set to commence the classroom training in the university, which she said shared the vision of the company. “This signing of a Memorandum of Agreement commits us to work together closely towards
our common goal, which is grooming a crop of skilled workforce as a way of building capacity in the power sector. “Each party will pursue numerous significant activities such as effective classroom trainings, fieldwork, physical activities and community development projects to mention a few,” she added. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Valentine Aletor, described the initiative as a timely intervention to address major challenges such as human capital deficit and corruption practice in the power sector. Aletor said, “VIPL-EU joint initiative is to engender governmentindustry-university partnership
in research and innovation for the projection of local initiatives, which would ultimately lead to the building of home-made alternative, indigenous technologies that are easily adaptable to solving the emerging technical and engineering problems that have be-devilled electricity generation and distribution in Nigeria. He also noted that the partnership would serve as a major incentive to improve the university’s drive for global excellence in technological innovation, adding that the second phase of the programme would focus on the “production of light equipment and accessories to effect minor routine repairs within the power sector.”
MAN seeks improved partnership with Akwa Ibom, Cross River govts Charles Okonji The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has called on the governments of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States to strengthen their partnerships with the organised private sector in order to boost the states’ economy. The Chairman of the association in charge of the area, Mr Jackson Iniobong, gave the advice in an interview in Calabar on Sunday. Iniobong said that it has become necessary for gov-
ernment to understand the critical role played by the organised private sector and to partner with them in the development of the economy, stressing that the only way the government would succeed in growing the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) was for it to partner the private sector.. ``In this part of the country there has been very big gap between the government and the organised private sector. ``So, we are hoping that the new government of Cross River and Akwa
Ibom states should see the need to partner the private sector in order to develop the states’ economy. ``We are helping them to develop the economy and to create employment and end the menace of unemployment,” he said. The chairman, however, commended the governor of Cross River, Prof. Ben Ayade, for his promise to pursue the dredging of Calabar Sea Port to boost economic activities in the state. He said the policy was a welcome development, adding that it requires political
will to address the challenges of the Sea Port. ``Dredging of Calabar port is very important and any government that fails to think of how to work on the port should not be in government. ``We have been hearing about dredging of Calabar Port by the successive administrations but today nothing is happening, so, for the governor to think of that is a welcome development. ``We hope he will keep up with the promise,” Iniobong said.

1215 Magna Carta sealed ÎÎÎFollowing
a revolt by the English nobility against his rule, King John put his royal seal on the Magna Carta, or “Great Charter.” The document, essentially a peace treaty between John and his barons, guaranteed that the king would respect feudal rights and privileges, uphold the freedom of the church, and maintain the nation’s laws. Although more a reactionary than a progressive document in its day, the Magna Carta was seen as a cornerstone in the development of democratic England by later generations. John was enthroned as king of England following the death of his brother, King Richard the Lion-Hearted, in 1199. King John’s reign was characterized by failure. He lost the duchy of Normandy to the French king and taxed the English nobility heavily to pay for his foreign misadventures. He quarrelled with Pope Innocent III and sold church offices to build up the depleted royal coffers. Following the defeat of a campaign to regain Normandy in 1214, Stephen Langton, the archbishop of Canterbury, called on the disgruntled barons to demand a charter of liberties from the king. In 1215, the barons rose up in rebellion against the king’s abuse of feudal law and custom. John, faced with a superior force, had no choice but to give in to their demands. Earlier kings of England had granted concessions to their feudal barons, but these charters were vaguely worded and issued voluntarily. The document drawn up for John in June 1215, however, forced the king to make spe-
cific guarantees of the rights and privileges of his barons and the freedom of the church. On June 15, 1215, John met the barons at Runnymede on the Thames and set his seal to the Articles of the Barons, which after minor revision was formally issued as the Magna Carta. The charter consisted of a preamble and 63 clauses and dealt mainly with feudal concerns that had little impact outside 13th century England. However, the document was remarkable in that it implied there were laws the king was bound to observe, thus precluding any future claim to absolutism by the English monarch. Of greatest interest to later generations was clause 39, which stated that “no free man shall be arrested or imprisoned or disseised [dispossessed] or outlawed or exiled or in any way victimised...except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land.” This clause has been celebrated as an early guarantee of trial by jury and of habeas corpus and inspired England’s Petition of Right (1628) and the Habeas Corpus Act (1679). In immediate terms, the Magna Carta was a failure--civil war broke out the same year, and John ignored his obligations under the charter. Upon his death in 1216, however, the Magna Carta was reissued with some changes by his son, King Henry III, and then reissued again in 1217. That year, the rebellious barons were defeated by the king’s forces. In 1225, Henry III voluntarily reissued the Magna Carta a third time, and it formally entered English statute law.

1863 Lincoln calls for help ÎÎÎOn this day in 1863, Presi-
dent Abraham Lincoln called for help in protecting Washington, D.C., America’s capital city. Throughout June, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia was on the move. He had pulled his army from its position along the Rappahannock River around Fredericksburg, Virginia, and set it on the road to Pennsylvania. Lee and the Confederate leadership decided to try a second invasion of the North to take pressure off Virginia and to seize the ini-
tiative against the Army of the Potomac. The first invasion, in September 1862, failed when the Federals fought Lee’s army to a standstill at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland. Lee later divided his army and sent the regiments toward the Shenandoah Valley, using the Blue Ridge Mountains as a screen. After the Confederates took Winchester, Virginia, on June 14, they were situated on the Potomac River, seemingly in a position to move on Washington, D.C. Lincoln did not know it, but Lee had no intention of attacking
Washington. All Lincoln knew was that the Rebel army was moving en masse and that Union troops could not be certain as to the Confederates’ location. On June 15, Lincoln put out an emergency call for 100,000 troops from the state militias of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. Although the troops were not needed, and the call could not be fulfilled in such a short time, it was an indication of how little the Union authorities knew of Lee’s movements and how vulnerable they thought the Federal capital was.
colony under British rule. As of 1704, Pennsylvania had two colonial assemblies: one for the “Upper Counties,” originally Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia, and one for the “Lower Counties on the Delaware” of New Castle, Kent and Sussex. All of the counties shared one governor. Thomas McKean and Caesar Rodney, the same two men who represented the Lower Counties in the Congress of 1765, proposed the Lower Counties’ simultaneous separation from Pennsylvania and the British crown. McKean and Rodney, along with George Read, represented the Lower Counties at the First Continental Congress in 1774 as well as the Second Continental Congress in 177576. When Read refused to vote for independence, McKean had famously summoned an ailing Rodney, who rode overnight from Dover, Delaware, to Philadelphia in order to cast his vote in favour of independence and
break the Delaware delegation’s stalemate. McKean and Rodney were punished for their zealous pursuit of independence in an area heavily populated by Loyalists. The first Delaware General Assembly, a body that owed its existence to McKean and Rodney, chose not to return them to the Continental Congress in October 1776. But, after Wilmington, Delaware, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, fell under British occupation, the second General Assembly returned the two Patriots to the Continental Congress in October 1777. Both men went on to serve as president of the state of Delaware. Rodney held the post from March 31, 1778, to November 6, 1781. McKean served briefly as the acting president from September 22 until October 20, 1777, while George Read travelled from Philadelphia to assume the post, left vacant by John McKinley’s capture by British troops.

Kogi NUT blames govt over education woes Ibrahim Obansa Lokoja
ÏÏÏThe Kogi State branch
of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has blamed the state government for the lingering problems of salary and other allowances bedeviling basic education teachers in the state. The state NUT Chairman, Suleiman Abdullahi, stated this last weekend in his office, while speaking with journalists shortly after a meeting between the Union and the board members of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), led by its chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ahmed. He noted that if the state
government had followed the law which mandated the state government to also contribute to the funding of basic education, the problem would not have arose, saying that what happened is that the state government only put the burden on the local governments. "The law that set up Kogi state SUBEB was signed by former governor Ibrahim Idris in 2005, it stipulates that the financing of SUBEB should be carried out by the state and local governments, but this is not the case. So, if the state government has been paying their contribution to the financing, many of these problems would have been solved," he lamented.

APC crisis: We’ve been vindicated – Prof. Alkali Egena Egena
Abuja ÏÏÏFormer Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, on Sunday, reiterated his earlier assertion that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not prepared to govern a complex nation like Nigeria. In a statement he personally signed in Abuja, on the fallout of the selection of the leadership of the National Assembly and the responses from stakeholders within and outside the APC fold, the former presidential aide said the episode reminded Nigerians of his earlier call on the leadership of the APC,
before the handing over of government, to plan more and talk less, for which he was allegedly castigated by the APC spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. Said he, "I have observed with keen interest the scenario in the National Assembly that resulted in the election of Sen. Bukola Saraki and Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, as well as other leaders of National Assembly, that what attracted my attention more, though not surprising, were the incoherent and contradictory responses from the leaders of the APC, especially the faction led by the former Governor of Lagos, Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu, who outrightly rejected the out-
come of the election and without decorum, blamed President Muhammadu Buhari as being responsible for the debacle in the National Assembly. "This is indeed a clear confirmation of my earlier warning to the APC to plan more and talk less. Undoubtedly, things have started falling apart in the APC. "From the look of things, the greatest obstacle to the Muhammadu Buhari administration is not the PDP and other political parties, but some of the over ambitious leaders and members of his party, the APC, who believe they have invested so much in his election and cannot wait a day longer to
collect returns from their investments" Prof. Alkali said. On the emergence of Sen. Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Deputy President of the Senate, and accusations that the PDP orchestrated the rejection of all the anointed candidates of the APC in the legislature's leadership election, Alkali said the turnout of events simply indicated that the former ruling party was alive and kicking. Alkali continued, "Whoever said that the PDP is dead and buried should please show me the cemetery and the grave where the PDP was buried"
Tribunal: Enugu APGA candidate raises the alarm over threat to life Moses Oyediran
Enugu ÏÏÏThe All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) senatorial candidate for Enugu North Senatorial Zone of Enugu State at the recently concluded general election, Chief Willy Ezugwu, has again raised the alarm over threats to his life. In a statement signed by Ezugwu and made available
to Daily Times on Sunday, he said he had been bombarded with calls by unknown persons, who asked him to either withdraw his petition at the courts or be killed. Ezugwu is at the Enugu tribunal challenging the propriety or otherwise of the emergence of Barr. Chuka Utazi, as the senator-elect of the zone. The
APGA candidate came second, according to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He is contending to be declared the senator-elect, positing that as at the time of election, Chuka Utazi was not the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and hence he (Ezugwu) should be de-
clared winner. The APGA candidate, who also serves as the secretary general of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), stated that the current threat to his life was not unconnected with his quest to retrieve his stolen mandate, noting that this would be the second time that he would be raising alarm over threat to his life.
Balarabe Musa lauds el-Rufai over restructuring of ministries Victor Jibrin
Kaduna
ÏÏÏ
Following the restructuring of ministries announced recently in Kaduna State by the governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, fomer governor of the state, Alhaji Balarabe Musa has endorsed the action of the governor. Speaking in an interview, Musa decried the high number of ministries at both the federal and state levels across the country saying that their restructuring is desirable. He argued that apart from saving cost, the administrative step taken by el-Rufai will avoid duplication of functions.
“This restructuring is alright. Too many ministries were created at both the federal and state levels, doing similar things. The thinking and action of Malam el-Rufai is therefore reasonable and commendable”, Musa stated, while calling other states of the federation as well as the federal government to borrow a leaf from Kaduna.

Kwara community slams Police over herdsmen attacks Kehinde Akinpelu Ilorin
ÏÏÏ A Kwara community, under the aegis of Oro-Ago Development Union (ODU), Ifelodun Local Government Area, has accused the police high command of siding with the Fulani herdsmen to allegedly attack its members and also destroy their farmlands. ODU also fingered policemen from Inspector General’s office, Abuja, for allegedly killing one woman and
arresting five members of the community on the June 12th, 2015. The deceased, whose name was given as Bolatito Balogun, was said to have been shot by the police, while women in the community were protesting the arrests of their men. The community specifically alleged that the police headquarters in Abuja are siding with the Fulani herdsmen to attack its members and also destroy farmlands.

Nigerian Navy has written to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State intimating him of the commencement of the Direct Short Service Commission enlistment exercise for the selection of suitably qualified gradu-
state, to address various problems, especially the one related to unpaid salaries of civil servants. In a statement issued in Osogbo by the party’s Director of Media and Strategy, Prince Diran Odeyemi, the PDP said one of the reasons Aregbsola was finding governing the state “a task bigger than his ca-
pacity was because he rejected quality advice from Osun stakeholders as they were not registered members of the APC. “We said that because Ogbeni Aregbesola never lived in Osun before becoming the governor he had no idea of the needs of the people of the state. The party said it wel-
comed the confession by the governor that the inability of his administration to pay workers was a problem beyond him, adding that he should, as a matter of urgency, call stakeholders meeting to allow Osun people to identify the causes of the challenges facing the state and seek solutions to them.

In a statement made available to the Daily Times by Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Habib Aruna, the naval authorities notified the governor that the recruitment exercise had commenced with online registration at www.joinnigerianavy.com on 18th May 2015 and would close on 28th June 2015. The statement added that the online registra-
tion would be followed by an aptitude test on July 4, 2015 at six centres, nationwide, with the details of the qualifications and other criteria for the exercise published online.

Ă?Ă?Ă? A group, Kwara Con-
cerned Citizens, has stoutly defended the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, over the statement he issued on behalf of his party shortly after the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives respectively. In a statement signed by two of its members – Shaaba Lafiaji and Hezekiah Oyedepo – the group also condemned a threat by a Kwara-based body to deal with Mohammed for “for carrying out his duties diligently, as he has always done, by articulating the position of his party. It said the position of the anti- Mohammed group did not reflect that of the majority of the Kwara people, who were proud of Moham-
“Aregbesola did not care about our advice as major stakeholders because we are in PDP. No Osun indigene, home and abroad, is happy with the mess we are in, as a result of nonpayment of salaries. This has put the people in a very difficult situation, just as people are dying of hunger.
med for being a good ambassador of the state. “We are astonished that for carrying out his duties diligently, as he has always done, by articulating the position of his party, Lai Mohammed has become a target of attacks and threats from some perfidious persons in his home state. “In order to put the issue in the proper perspective, we, the members of the Kwara Concerned Citizens, have, therefore, decided to set the record straight, by saying the opinion of that self-serving group does not reflect that of the majority of the good people of Kwara State, while we also acknowledge the courage, loyalty, decency and professionalism of Lai Mohammed in carrying out his duties as the voice of the APC. “In the first instance, the opinions expressed by Lai
Aregbesola
Mohammed in his statements are not his own, but that of his party. Secondly, since he articulates the position of his party at many levels – including intra- and inter-party, national, as well as international - he is expected, at all times, to put the interest of the party above his own personal interest. “We make bold to say that, to our pride as his kinsmen and, indeed, to a wide acclamation across the land, he has performed his duties creditably. “It is therefore unfair, illogical and downright simplistic to conclude that Lai Mohammed’s statement conveying the immediate reaction of his party to the elections in the National Assembly means he is opposed to the election of his kinsman, Dr. Bukola Saraki, as the President of the Senate.
Church urges Nigerians to trust God for restoration Ă?Ă?Ă?Nigerians were told, on
Sunday, that the country's old glory would be restored if they believed in God “and work hard to ensure that selfish interest is substituted for national interest. Senior Superintendent, Gabriel F. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu II) of Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide, gave the advice during a special sermon to mark the church's 51st founder’s anniversary. The church was founded by Archbishop (Dr.) Isaiah M. Akinadewo on June 14, 1964. The anniversary was cel-
ebrated with special thanksgiving in all parishes of the church, including the international headquarters in Ondo, Ondo State. Speaking at the Restoration Parish of the church in Akute, Ogun State, Akinadewo said: “Nothing is too hard for the Lord, the God of all flesh to do. If and when Nigerians change from their evil ways, Nigeria will, once again, become the darling of all in the comity of nations. Quoting Jeremiah 17:5, the cleric said that Nigerians, for decades, had put their hope in human beings “and they have been disap-
pointed. For this country to grow financially, spiritually, economically, politically and industrially, we must start to put our hope in God and, at the same time, do the right thing. “According to Jeremiah 29:11, God has good plans for this country and its people but Nigerians are their own problems by deviating from God’s plans, because of selfish interests. With the natural resources that abound in the country, there is enough for all Nigerians. Let us commit our ways unto God, trust Him and He shall bring His plans for us to pass.

Police raids baby factory in Enugu, rescue nine pregnant girls Moses Oyediran Enugu
ÏÏÏ The Enugu State Police Command, at the weekend, raided a “baby factory” and rescued nine pregnant girls in the process. The operation, carried out by the 9th Mile Division of the Nigeria Police Force, took the police to a baby factory located within Etiti Amankwo Ngwo, in the Udi Local Government Area. The factory was allegedly owned and operated by one Ikechukwu Onoh of Etiti Amakwo Ngwo, who claimed he got a provisional approval in October 2007 from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social De-
velopment to run the home known as Tex Hospital and Maternity Home. “I got a provisional approval in October 2007 from Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development Enugu State to admit and shelter pregnant women in his hospital called ‘Tex Hospital and maternity home’, and that the hospital was no longer functional,” he said. Onoh admitted that under the authority, he was supposed to inform the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development within 24hrs of admitting any pregnant woman. The Police Public Relation Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed
the arrest said the pregnant women and girls later gave their names as Stella James, 19 years of Ohaozara Ebonyi State, Eze Jennifer, 19 years from Obukpa in Nsukka Local Government Area, Ugwu Christabel, 17 years, from Aku Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, Happiness Mbaonu, 17 years, from Nnewi, in Anambra State, Ovunna Ifeoma, 20 years, from Ezza, in Ebonyi State. Others are Esther Nwankwo, 21 years, from Nkalagu, Ebonyi State, Onyedika Agu, 23 years, from Isuawa Awgu of Enugu State, Blessing James, 23 years, from Ohafia Abia State and Chibueze Ujunwa, 24 years, from Nenwen-
ta Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State. Meanwhile, some of the girls claimed that they were raped by unknown persons and that they found succour in the home. One of the girls, who gave her name as Christabel, claimed that she was raped and that she could not report to her parents until pregnancy resulted, leading to her being forced to marry an old man or leave the family. This, she said made her to seek for assistance through one of her relations, who directed her to the home. Amaraizu said that the arrested girls were helping the police in their investigations.
Anambra NUJ scribe laid to rest Nkiru Nwagbo Awka
ÏÏÏThe
body of the late Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Princess Ifeoma Anumba, has been laid to rest in her father's compound, Umuriam Village, Nawfia in Njikoka council area of the state. Anumba died on May 3, at the age of 41, after a brief illness. Daily Times gathered that she had complained about weakness and had actually gone to hospital to be properly diagnosed. Speaking to Daily Times at her funeral, the National President of NUJ, Mr. Muhammed Garba, represented by the Vice-President South-South Zone F, Comrade Seiyefa Uzaka, described the death of Ifeoma as an unforgettable loss in view of the fact that the Council had lost her
immediate past chairman Tochukwu Udorji about year ago. He noted that the deceased had always identified with the course of the union both locally and nationally, adding that she would greatly be missed. Also Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Emeka Ozumba, said everyone should take solace in the Lord since the late Ijeoma- lived peacefully with her professional colleagues and made useful suggestions on the subject of government and media partnership for good governance.

el-Rufai restates commitment to complete water project Mathew Dadiya Abuja
ÏÏÏ
Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, at the weekend, said that his administration would complete the Zaria water project and break
whatever jinx was stalling the project that was years behind schedule, despite having cost the state billions of naira. The governor, who was speaking when he paid an unscheduled visit to the project site, directed the contractors to present to him the comprehensive details of the project. The non-completion of the project as stated is also responsible for the perennial lack of water in Zaria town and the neighbouring seven local government areas.
Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concern over the plight of Osun State workers, calling on the Governor Rauf Aregbesola to resign, since “he has declared that the situation in the state has gone beyond his control.” Its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, said Aregbesola should quit office, so that someone else who could take the state out of the mess into which he had plunged it.
“He should just tender his resignation letter to the state House of Assembly with an apology to the people of Osun State for deliberately throwing them into this unpalatable situation, because of greed and fraudulent policies which has drained off the purse of the state.” The Ekiti PDP said that it was unbelievable that the governor could owe the workers in the state up to eight months’ salary, when he had not been executing any project from the allocations from the Federal Government.
APC has finally buried PDP for good, says Nyako Tom Garba Yola
ÏÏÏThe
former governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Hammanyero Nyako (rtd) said the People's Democratic Party (PDP) had been buried. He said that the crisis that was rocking the party had to do with the wicked agenda its major operatives had for the country. Nyako said this during a thank-you reception or-
ganised by his son, Senator Abdulaziz Nyako to appreciate the people of Adamawa State who voted for him, in order to press the cause of the people of Adamawa Central Senatorial district, at the National Assembly. According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was dared by the PDP which thought that the APC would fold its arms, as it destroyed the country through the usual game of imposing unpopular people
against the general wish of the masses and bastardising the country’s economy with all manner of corruption. Nyako assured the people of Adamawa that with Buhari, as a president, things would change for the better knowing full well that Buhari is a man with good reputation both home and abroad; a man that has the leadership ability to reshape Nigeria for good. He said the people could,
under the APC dispensation, challenge those they voted into power. He called on Nigerians to pray for the success of the Buhari administration. It would be recalled that Nyako returned to the country barely a month ago and had been quizzed by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in Abuja, allegedly on corruption, for which he was forced out of office.

NIBF lifts the nation through books Moses Kadiri BEYOND the falling standard of education in the country, Nigerian Book Fair Trust holds Nigeria International Book Fair (NIBF), to lift Nigeria dwindling reading book culture. The event 14th edition in the series was held at the Multi-purpose Hall, University of Lagos, Akoka. The week-long book fair began with international conference on the theme: “African Youth Empowerment Through Book for Sustainable National Development.” In attendance, on the occasion were notable personalities present including, Chairman of HEBN Publishers Plc, Mr. Ayo Ojeniyi, Acting Executive Secretary, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Prof. Ismail Junaidu, Professor of Oral Literature and Folklore, Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. G.G. Darah, Librarian Mr. Tunji Okegbola, others were publishers, teachers and many others. The papers presented by different speakers focused on youth empowerment. Mr. Ojeniyi noted that education remained the most potent means of empowering large pool of human resources, for the overall development of the continent. “The book is the vehicle by which skills and knowledge are delivered. And, for that, youth development in Africa depends, among others,
on the society’s attitude towards the book and its usage. It is, however, unfortunate to note that the book and by extension education, is not given the pride of place in Africa. This is so either through inconsistent and policy poor implementation and inadequate budgetary allocation.” He stressed that cultivating a reading habit is not for the youth alone. “In order for this to happen and, thus, facilitate an enduring reading culture, government, public-spirited individuals, civil societies and corporate organisations must invest heavily in the knowledge industry by, among others, building and stocking school and public libraries with physical and books backed with internet facilities and equipment for e-books.” Mr. Ojeniyi emphasised that with the teeming youth population, African countries must wake up from their slumber to the fact that youth empowerment is crucial to sustainable development in the continent. “Quite a number of benefits are derivable from youth empowerment. These include poverty eradication, crime reduction, national growth, technological development, reduction in insurgency, among others,” he notes. He suggested that the first step is to have a well-defined youth policy. “Educational policies should be implemented fully and reviewed from time to time. The situation, currently,
is that a sizeable number of African countries do not have a youth policy at all and those that have either do not implement it or the one that they implement is outdated.” He reiterated that beyond educational policy, some African countries had come up with empowerment programmes for youths – in recognition of the fact that one of the most crucial challenges facing Africa today was preparing the young ones for the future. The international conference threw up a lot of youth-related issues. For instance, Darah expressed displeasure with the way education was being run in the country. He said in 1976, the Nigerian government introduced universal basic education programme, but for decades after, the scourge of illiteracy was still widespread in the country. “The portals of education are shut to millions of young people, who seek to proceed from primary to secondary level of education. Millions who complete secondary education are unable to move to the tertiary institutions due to the limited opportunities there. Only about two million are enrolled in the tertiary institutions that, by some population projections, can support 20 million students. The victims of these structural shortages are the young people, whose aspirations and careers are truncated due to the negligence by the government.”

Fela Anikulapo Kuti Fela Anikulapo Kuti, born in Abeokuta, in 1938, was a singer-composer, trumpet, sax and keyboard player, bandleader, and politician. He was one of Africa’s most controversial musicians and, throughout his life, he continued to fight for the rights of the common man and woman despite vilification, harassment, and even imprisonment by the military government. Fela, as he was popularly known, was strongly influenced by his parents. His mother was Funmilayo, a leading figure in the nationalist struggle. Practically all of his records are dominated by political events and discussions from the approach of Pan-Africanism.

Femi Esho, avid highlife music collector and Managing Director of Lagosbased Evergreen Musical Company, still marches on in his resolve to help preserve old highlife tunes in Nigeria, and so earn for himself fame, fortune and recognition in the process. Agozino Agozino Back as a youth in the sixties, Femi Esho toyed dutifully with his dream like every other young man. He often sneaked away out of his rather sleepy Ijesha – in what was then the old Western region, but present day Osun State, to Lagos to watch a favourite highlife artistes play in many of the popular clubs around Alagomeji and Ojuelegba areas of Lagos on weekends. Each trip cost him a good amount of money, which he usually paid with excitement to get a space on the old cocoa- loading lorries coming to Lagos. But, like an unspoken prophecy, he was unknowingly preparing himself for a career that he would later pursue throughout his life. At that time, no trip was complete without Esho buying at least a work or two of those highlife masters. By the time he turned 20, Esho’s collections boasted of the works of highlife legends like Roy Chicago, Adeolu Akinsanya, Tunde Nightingale, Ayinde Bakare, Eddie Okonta, and J.O Araba. There were also other works from masters like Bobby Benson, Celestine Ukwu, Rex Lawson, Osita Osadebe, Orlando Julius, Zeal Onyia, Victor Olaiya, E.C Arinze and Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who first experimented with highlife, before creating Afrobeat. Today, his Evergreen Musical Company located at No 34 Oguntolu Street, Somolu, Lagos, is a vast music library and highlife shop. In fact, walking into the one-storey building is like walking into an archive. As you arrive, you are welcomed into the building with excitement .You will also find male and female workers, who would attend to you by wanting to know why you were there. Each day, people besiege the office from every part of the country to buy one or two of their favourite highlife record and get a good advice from him. Esho’s interest in documenting these songs for posterity began when, according to him, his mind told him there could be danger of the society losing these works of old masters, going by the corruption in the music world of today. According to him, the cacophony going on in the world today, in the name of music, brought him close to tears. He attempted a comparison between the new computer
I started collecting highlife music at age 12 — Femi Esho backed music, and the rich moral and philosophical words he grew up to listening to in the fifties and sixties. And he made up his mind that something must be done to preserve whatever is left of those works of the old masters. Thanking God for his late father, who also inspired him, Esho said his effort today wouldn’t have been possible, were it not for the inspiration he got from him while he was young. “I will not say it is an accident, but the vision started when I was very young in primary school, at about the age of 12. My late father was a custodian of church music. The church organ was very important then. And by virtue of his position, I started playing organ at a very young age, to the extent that when the church organist was not available I took his position. Not only that, I recall, during my primary school days, that I bought flutes, because of the love I have for great Ghanaian highlife masters like E.T. Mensah, Broadway Dance Band, Uhuru Dance Band and the Ramblers Dance Band.’’ The result was the small group of band known as Five Solas, which he formed as soon as he entered the secondary school in 1959. As one who had deep passion for highlife music, he has since been promoting the music all over Nigeria. He has also travelled extensively around Ghana and Nigeria, collecting and preserving works

Esho of these masters so that they will not go into extinction. For instance, one of his products, in CD, produced years ago, is entitled: 20 Evergreen Hits of Three Music Masters of Our Country. The release is a collection of 40 classic compositions of the late Tunde Nightangle, Ayinde Bakare and J.O Araba. The CD includes hits like Yoruba Tennis Club anthem, among others. In 2007, Esho also presented to the public, repackaged complete works of Afrobeat legend, the late Fela AnikulapoKuti. It was a huge success and it was to be the beginning of greater things to happen to the delight of indigenous music lovers. For a country like Nigeria, where many claim to be musicians, separating the wheat from the chaff may just be the needed solution to know who is who in the music industry. Esho recalled, with nostalgia, the tremendous social and cultural impact those who were doing music, in those days, impacted on the society, starting from the doyen of highlife music like late Bobby Benson. “There were several artistes then, like Dr. Victor Olaiya, Roy Chicago, Adeolu Akinsanya, E.C
Arinze etc. Then, there were many notable clubs, too. They included the Palace Club, the Independent Hotel where Orlando Julius entertained, Central Hotel, where Roy Chicago was a regular fixture. Apart from that, there were others like the Ambassadors Hotel, which was very famous at Alogomeji. There was the Kakadu Hotel, were Fela Anikulapo Kuti, at that time, played jazz. Also the late E.C. Arinze, who brought up Victor Uwaifo; include Ebenezer Obey, as well as Osita Osadebe, who was played under Stephen Amechi, all started their music there. He said Lagos was very good then, because there were no cases of armed robbery or the kind of insecurity of today. According to him, one’s ethnic group was never an issue, as everybody enjoyed and appreciated songs by these masters, who cut across ethnic lines with their compositions. The Nigerian civil war of 1967 to 1970, according to Esho, caused a major break: it drove many of the masters to their separate regions, especially those from the Eastern region.

Church pays hospital bill of N507,000 for six women JOY ANYIM NDUDI brings joyful news of the six women abandoned for months in the hospital by their husbands over medical bills in a community hospital. Her report. Six mothers who gave birth through cesarean operation at the Ilogbo Central Hospital in Ajangbadi area of Lagos in March and been held for two months in have found succor from the Dioceses of Lagos (West) Anglican Communion in
Lagos. The women, who had developed complications during delivery, were rushed to Ilogbo Central Hospital where they all went through cesarean operation successfully. But their joy was cut short when their husbands, upon learning of hospital bills to the tune of over N500,000 collectively to have their wives and babies discharged from the hospital, took to their heels. The women and their babies have remained at the hospital two months. But the case was brought to the notice of the Church last week and, as part of its social responsibility, the body of Christ
rose to put smiles on the faces of the young mothers. Speaking to journalists last week, head of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos (West), Rev. James
Olusola Odedeji said the matter came to his notice on about only ten days ago. “My attention was drawn by the Primate of the Anglican

They have even done their best to have retained them in the hospital. They have been so magnanimous to have attended to them in the first place. “Knowing therefore that there is nothing free even in Freetown, we therefore came as a Church to salvage the situation. These women have delivered through operation but their husbands have absconded because they do not have the means to pay. We therefore came to pay up the bill of N507,000 in cheque, so that they can go home with their children.” The Assistant Medical Director of Ilogbo Central Hospital, Dr. Eluwah Chukwuduma, who represented the Chief Medical Director, was grateful to the Dioceses for intervening. His words: “Ilogbo Central Hospital is a community hospital and, like every other hospital, we are concerned with saving lives and in the process of doing this,

Mrs. Tochukwu said, “I really thank God for using the Church to clean my tears. l am even more happy to be alive because during delivery, l had serious complications and even after God saved my life, the money was not there to pay for the hospital bills.” Mrs. Olaposi also thanked the Church for coming to her aid. “I least expected this from anyone, but thank God who is ever faithful. Mrs. James Joy, Ikechukwu Ukwuda and Ndubuisi Ogechi all expressed their heartfelt joy and thanked the Church for taking away shame from their faces. As a parting word, Rev. I will pursue this matter to the end — Akinbobola to discuss the matter and asking them to reply us disproving this rumour of planning to terminate the victim within a stipulated time which they refused. Our personal investigation showed that the company indeed has plan to terminate Akinbobola’s appointment. “At this juncture, CLO is calling on Ogun State Government and all Nigerians to check the lackadaisical and inhumane attitude of Indian owned companies operating in Nigeria, especially this Pardee Foods Nigeria Limited. “CLO is also asking Pardee Foods Nigeria Limited to compensate the poor Akinbobola Orebe with the sum of N20m for the accident which caused permanent disability to his person in accordance with Employees Compensation Act (Part III) Section 7(1).”
Comrade Olaniyi told Daily Times that CLO will watch this matter closely and ensure the human rights violation of these Asian companies are put on check forthwith. Several efforts made to see the Human Relations Manager of Pardee Foods Nigeria Limited were unsuccessful as management personnel kept sealed lips upon the mention of the case of Akinbobola. Speaking on behalf of himself and his colleagues, Akinbobola told our correspondent he had to resort to the Civil Liberties Organisation because the company has been laying off staff who encountered accidents and injuries without adequate compensation. “I will pursue this matter to the end and I pray that God will use the CLO to bring justice to me and my colleagues.”

age. It is no longer under the orbit of any extra continental power. It should no longer take orders from any country, however powerful. The fortunes of Africa are in our hands to make or to mar. For too long have we been kicked around: for too long have we been treated like adolescents who cannot discern their interests and act accordingly. For too long has it been presumed that the African needs outside ‘experts’ to tell him who are his friends and who are his enemies. The time has come when we should make it clear that we can decide for ourselves; that we know our own interests and how to protect those interests; that we are capable of resolving African problems without presumptuous lessons in ideological dangers which, more often than not, have no relevance for us, nor for the problem at hand.” That was Murtala Mohammed looking imperialism eyeball-to-eyeball and asserting the African dignity with a distinct Nigerian voice. He was setting our continental feet on the path of liberation. However the discerning
could perceive that he had signed his death warrant. Thirty-one days after this rousing speech at the Organisation of African Unity (Eunuchs, says Fela), Murtala was cut down on the streets of Lagos. By some strange coincidence, the man who was American Ambassador in Lagos when Murtala was killed was also on the US delegation that met Abiola in prison in 1998 when he had his terminal tea. MKO had also embarked on a reparation campaign before he won the presidency he was not allowed to assume. A lot of waters have since passed under our bridge that an assertive Murtala now looks like a
fairy tale. The low we have sunk in our servitude and genuflecting grovelling before imperial powers manifested in the 2015 elections which the West practically conducted for us. Our equivalent of Pius Anyim (former SGF) in US came here reading the riot act to our leaders and threatening them with visas. Joe Biden followed up with a call to our President that we must use card readers that had not been tested for our elections even when American laws forbid direct interference in the internal affairs of other countries close to elections. Britain and America
were issuing joint communique on Nigeria! The American envoy made us a butt of practical joke by saying our card reader was better than theirs even after a colossal failure. May be it was better because it accredited infants in our clime which would not happen in the land of freedom! The height of the assault was when they brought one lady from the ICCJ who was threatening our politicians on Television every five minutes. Our delinquent politicians bereft of any sense of history and pride started using the ICCJ to harass one another. “We are going to report to the ICCJ” became their com-

mon refrain. We saw the West making a plaything of us even in our adversity. Mrs Obama was carrying #BringBackOurGirls which she never displayed against Barrack for the 340,000 Americans who go missing yearly. Our unsuspecting protesters kept parading Unity Fountain causing distractions. The foreign powers who wanted to use the issue to have a check at the oil in Lake Chad Basin came here on the pretext of finding the girls and left immediately. All is now quiet at Unity Fountain as if the girls were part of the inauguration on May 29. Our forces that were written off as incompetent within weeks of having the weapons the West would not sell to us were able to dislodge Boko Haram from most of their occupied territory. Here comes Amnesty International with a list of the top brass of our gallant Armed Forces who must be tried for violating the rights of Boko Haramites. M
ali continued to defy the odds at the FIFA U-20 World Cup after they booked their place in semi-finals with a 4-3 win on penalties over Germany following a well-fought 1-1 draw in Christchurch. Julian Brandt’s opener had put the tournament favourites ahead, though a Djigui Diarra penalty save and Souleymane Coulibaly header levelled things up, leaving the sides level for an hour. Niklas Stark then fired the crucial spot-kick wide and sent Fanyeri Diarra into dreamland. The outstanding moment of the opening passages of play was a disappointing one for the match, as

Malian players celebrate after eliminating Germany at Christchurch, New Zealand Germany’s top scorer Marc Stendera was forced off the field, and without him the tournament’s most prolific side struggled to find their rhythm. Good pressing from the Malians limited their chances, although the Africans often struggled to make any themselves. A couple of efforts from distance were all that brought either goalkeeper into action before Frank Wormuth’s
charges broke the deadlock shortly before the break. A Hany Mukhtar freekick couldn’t get beyond the defensive wall, but the ball eventually fell to Brandt, who hit a volley from the edge of the area that skipped off the turf and into the bottom corner. Mali returned after the break looking bright and up for the challenge. Their early pressure looked to have been for nothing though after the referee pointed
to the spot for a foul on Jeremy Dudziak. But the Africans held strong as Mukhtar saw his effort saved and, within two minutes, parity was restored. A foul on the left flank gave Youssouf Kone the chance to swing a cross into the German area and Coulibaly met it perfectly. The defender got free at the front post and his diving header flashed beyond keeper Marvin Schwaebe and into the far corner.
Senegal booked their place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Uzbekistan in Wellington. After Mali’s victory over Germany earlier in the day, Mamadou Thiam’s strike was enough to see Africa occupy half of the tournament’s final four spots for the first time in a decade after they came out on top in a tight encounter against the Central Asians. With so much at stake, the game was predictably cagey in the early stages. Both teams were sitting deep, relying on their propensity for the counter attack.

ali’s goalkeeper and the man who had a big hand in the Africans’ hard-fought win over the Germans at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup, Djigui Diarra, has revealed that Manuel Neuer of Germany is his role model. “Manuel Neuer is my role model,” exclaimed the Aiglons No1. “He’s a fantastic keeper and a big inspiration to me. I really like him, though I like my team colours and my country more.” The great Neuer would have been pleased to turn in the kind of performance
Diarra produced in Christchurch. Though he failed to get a hand on a single spot-kick in the shootout – not that he had to, with Germany’s Julian Brandt and Niklas Stark missing the target altogether with their efforts – he did make an ultimately crucial stop from the penalty spot in normal time, the turning point of the tie. Fifty-three minutes had elapsed when Mali’s Falaye Sacko tripped Jeremy Dudziak in the box. With the Germans already 1-0 up, skipper Hany Mukhtar had the chance to put the game all but out of the African side’s reach. Firing the ball high to Diarra’s left, however, Mukhtar was aghast to see the ‘keeper guess right and push it away to safety. “I saw him looking in that direction just before he took the penalty, and I just had to follow his eyes,” said the shotstopping
Serbia, Mali set for semi-final showdown Serbia are through to face tournament surprise packages Mali in the FIFA U-20 World Cup semi-finals after triumphing over USA in a tense penalty shootout. The spot-kick drama followed 120 minutes of goalless and largely forgettable football, in which the Europeans were undoubtedly the better side. This was certainly not a classic quarter-final by any standards, and the rain and swirling wind did little to help. But most of the enterprising, attacking football came from the Serbians, who dominated large swathes of this tense and scrappy match. The lively Mijat Gacinovic was the Europeans’ most potent attacking threat in the first half and his mazy, jinking runs twice set up opportunities for others. First Sergei Milinkovic wasted the No10’s hard work by blazing high over the bar from 20 yards and then left-back Nemanja Antonov attempted an ambitious effort from the angle of the box that required an alert tip-over from Zack Steffen. USA offered little in the first half but did create one excellent chance when Thomas Thompson turned smartly on a cross from Paul Arriola only to slice a right-foot shot just wide of the post from ten yards. But there was little

Amid worsening weather, Serbia reestablished their grip on proceedings in the second period and created a series of decent goalscoring opportunities. Sasa Zdjelar was the first to threaten, firing narrowly and powerfully wide from 30 yards, while Andrija Zivkovic came closer still with a left-foot volley that skidded a foot or so off target. Velijko Paunovic’s side also found themselves up against an inspired keeper in Zack
Steffen, who thwarted them on several occasions, most notably in diving low to his right to agilely tip away a curling left-foot free-kick from Andrija Zivkovic. The impressive Steffen was at it again eight minutes from time, leaping high to his left to make another spectacular save from Stanisa Mandic’s powerful left-footed shot. Faced with such an imposing barrier, Serbia could ill afford to pass up giltedged chances. Yet that was exactly
what they did on two occasions as first extra time and then penalties beckoned. With four minutes of normal time remaining, Milinkovic rose unmarked to meet Andrija Zivkovic’s inswinging freekick six yards from goal, and it seemed certain the net would bulge. But instead of making contact with his head, from which any touch would have sent it in, Milinkovic missed and allowed the ball to hit his shoulder, sending it spinning out for a goal kick.
hero. “I think it gave us the lift we needed. My team-mates said that save wouldn’t be in vain and they were true to their word.” Within four minutes, Souleymane Coulibaly got on the end of Youssouf Kone’s free-kick to restore parity, which is how things remained all the way to the shootout, though a hesitant Diarra was grateful to scoop a dangerous Brandt free-kick out of harm’s way in the second half of extra-time. And when the penalties came, the Mali custodian did rather less work than he might have expected. “That’s right. I didn’t make any saves at all, though I’m sure they were scared to see me standing there in front of them. The next thing I knew, they’d shot wide.” Diarra is grateful to be in the limelight, especially after having only just reclaimed the No1 jersey. Injured in the lead-up to the CAF African U-20 Championships, he looked on as understudy Sory Traore excelled in making a vital contribution to Les Aiglons’ qualification for the world finals. When the time came for Mali to step out against Mexico for their opening match in New Zealand, there was much conjecture as to whether it would be Diarra or Traore who would be pulling the gloves.
Brazil through as profligate Portugal disappoint Brazil have again prevailed on penalties to reach the FIFA U-20 World Cup semi-finals after a 0-0 draw with Portugal at Hamilton’s Waikato Stadium. Rogerio Micale’s side can count themselves hugely fortunate, although their European opponents have no-one to blame but themselves for the outcome, with dreadful misses - both throughout the match and in the shootout - leading to defeat in a match they dominated. Helio Sousa had tweaked his system to adopt a seemingly more defensive approach but, whatever the intention, it was Portugal who spent the early stages very much on the front foot. Their first chance came in just two minutes when Joao Nunes tested keeper Jean from a long throw, while Gelson Martins headed wastefully over from a terrific Rony Lopes cross soon after. Martins had been the hero against New Zealand in the last 16 and he almost made immediate amends for his miss in 14 minutes, providing an inswinging cross that should have doubled as an assist for Andre Silva.

T
he Super Eagles have been commended for recording an important home win against Chad in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match played at Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna on Saturday. In a press statement released in Lagos on Sunday, national telecoms company, Globacom gave kudos to the Super Eagles for recording the first win in the group which has taken the team to the top of group G, pending when the Egypt-Tanzania match will be decided. Hard fighting Chadians had put up
a strong resistance in the first forty five minutes which ended goalless. However, the Super Eagles with pep talk from the Stephen Keshi-led coaching crew, went into the second half with strong determination which resulted in two goals from Gbolahan Salami in the 65th minute and Odion Oghalo from the spot in the 80th minute. “With this victory, the Super Eagles have moved to a commanding position in group G and the coaching crew should perfect a strategy to ensure that the team qualifies for the 2017 AFCON in Gabon. Nigeria cannot afford to be missing in action again from the most important
tournament in continental football,” the statement stated. Globacom advised the team to work towards picking at least a point each in their away matches in Cairo, N’djamena and Addis Ababa and win the two remaining home matches to avoid the mistake on 2014 which cost Nigeria the last AFCON ticket. The company also enjoined Nigerians not to relent in giving the much needed support to the Super Eagles through prayers and positive goodwill messages as they continue their campaign to pick the sole AFCON ticket from group G. Meanwhile, Globacom has called on the Super Falcons to work
towards beating USA in their next group match of the on-going 2015 Women World Cup in Canada to ensure that the team ends up with four points which can facilitate their qualification for the next round. “We urge the Falcons’ camp to remain focused on the task ahead. We believe that victory is achievable and we stand by you as ever, believing fervently that you will do Nigeria proud,” the statement concluded. Globacom is the official telecommunications partner of the Nigerian Football Federation and the major sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.

Nigeria’s Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike.
Just as new leadership of both the Senate and House of Representatives emerged, Nigeria’s Pillar of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike has tasked the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, as well as other Principal Officers and members of the National Assembly to explore every aspect of law to reposition sports in Nigeria. Ejidike in a congratulatory letters to the leaders of the National Assembly reiterated the need to
reposition sports in similar ways corruption and security are being handled as effective panacea to youth restiveness. The highly travelled and experienced sports administrator who also doubles as President of Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) described both Senator Saraki and Hon. Dogara as versatile leaders who are capable of leading the legislative arms of government, even as he called on all elected members of the National Assembly to cooperate and work together to achieve greatness for our dear country, Nigeria.
“I want to congratulate Senator Bukola Saraki, the Senate President; Senator Ike Ekweremadu the Deputy Senate President, as well as Rt Honourable Speaker, House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara and other Principal Officers and members of the National Assembly. “I also wish to reiterate the need for both chambers to tackle sports matters with the seriousness it deserves, knowing fully well that bulk of Nigerian population are the youths who could be given the right directions through sports,” he said.
Onazi Ben Nwachukwu, Abuja Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi, has expressed dismay over the red card given to his reliable defensive midfielder Ogenyi Onazi in their AFCON qualifier against Chad played over the weekend in Kaduna. Keshi, while fielding questions from the sporting media said the team will miss the player who has remained key to their successes. He noted that any player could have reacted the same manner Onazi reacted because the Chadian player purposely hit him even without the ball which in the first place is against the rule. But the ‘Big Boss’ added that the Niger referee only spotted the retaliation by Onazi which earned him a straight red card at the end of regulation time. He however added that the team which is in its rebuilding process will definitely have a solution to the absence of the Lazio midfielder in the subsequent matches. Meanwhile, former board member of the NFA, Alhaji Kabiru Umar has commended the Super Eagles for securing what he called a welldeserved victory over their Chadian opponents and urged them to ensure they improve with every game. Nigeria defeated Chad 2-0 with both goals coming in the second half of the game through Gbolahan Salami and a spot kick converted by Ighalo Odion.

Blatter’s U-turn

completes Dortmund switch
FIFA has brushed off reports in a Swiss newspaper that Sepp Blatter could renege on his decision to stand down as president of world football’s governing body. Blatter announced his intention to resign earlier this month after FIFA was thrown into chaos by allegations of corruption, and the date of an election to appoint his successor is due to be set next month. However, Schweiz am Sonntag Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of goalkeeper Roman Burki from Freiburg. Burki played every Bundesliga fixture for Freiburg last term, but was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation. Nevertheless, he will now join fellow Switzerland international Admir Mehmedi who signed for Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week - in continuing his career in the top flight.
Burki
cites an unnamed source close to Blatter as saying the 79-year-old had not ruled out remaining in the position. When contacted by Perform, FIFA highlighted Blatter’s resignation speech of June 2 and said: “FIFA has no further comment.” Blatter was successfully re-elected for a fifth term as president four days before unexpectedly confirming his resignation.
Messi
Argentina captain Lionel Messi has warned his side to sharpen up when they face Uruguay in their second game at the Copa America. Gerardo Martino’s men looked set to open their Group B campaign with a routine win on Saturday as they opened up a two-goal lead against Paraguay through Sergio Aguero and a Messi penalty. However, a fine strike from Nelson Valdez gave Paraguay hope and Lucas Barrios then grabbed a 90th-minute equaliser following a spectacular period of end-to-end play that saw both teams pass up chances. “We played well in the first half, but we fell asleep in the second,” said Messi. “We should have put the game to bed when they came on to us. In the first half we completely dominated possession, but in the second Paraguay took the ball away from us. “Obviously it’s frustrating to be held to a draw after being 2-0 up, but we have to move on, think about Uruguay and improve. We have to keep the ball a bit more and manage the game.” Argentina face Uruguay, who top the group following a 1-0 win over Jamaica, in La Serena on Tuesday.

Anfield Adam Lallana has called on Liverpool not to cash in on Raheem Sterling during the close-season, as he would not fancy facing his England team-mate in an opposition shirt next season. Sterling has been linked with a move away from Anfield after talks over a new contract stalled. Manchester City are thought to be interested in the forward - who has two years left on his current deal with the Eastlands club rumoured to be lining up a second bid for the 20-year-old after reportedly having an initial £30million offer knocked back. But, after playing a whole season with Sterling in the Premier League, Lallana is more than aware of his qualities and hopes he remains part of Brendan Rodgers’ squad. “He’s a great lad and, for me, people are obviously talking too much about him. He’s a really down-to-earth lad and I just hope he stays at Liverpool

Education, good but shouldn’t necessarily define you – Adora Mbelu
Nkarenyi Ukonu Adora Mbelu, a 2012 nominee of The Future Awards For Entrepreneur (media), is a director of Strategy and Business Development at Innovation Factory Ltd, a full-service creative consultancy company specializing in providing multidisciplinary services in general media and communications development. The 29 year old opens up in this interview about pursuing her dream of becoming an entrepreneur. You run both Innovation factory and Green Line Services. What are they both about? Innovative factory is the parent company while Green Line Services is a specialized sister company through which we pitch for jobs. It is primarily for profit. Innovation factory is meant to run as a vehicle for young creative minds, more like a school, a platform where young people can come, learn and have their ideas translated physically into funds. I would say it is my own way of giving back. Innovation factory was conceived five years ago but registered two years ago.

You have been known to work with quite a number of high net worth clients; Microsoft, Adidas, Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Medical Association etc. Don’t you sometimes feel intimidated knowing that older and more experienced competition abound? Obviously it is a proud achievement that the company handles such high net worth accounts and be able to convince these companies to do business with us. It hasn’t been easy no doubt but I also think that it is somewhat of a challenge compared to older people in the industry. If nothing else, winning these accounts has taught me to be confident enough to think outside the box and avoid being a local champion. then they relax. But for me personally, my company wasn’t built for revenue but majorly for passion so we pursue everyone; from conglomerates to individuals. There are no limitations in terms of our clientele. What would you say must have contributed to shaping you into who you are today? I won’t say good grades, even though I have had good grades all my life. It is spirituality and that connection with God. I am one of the lucky few who knew early on in life what I wanted to do and had the opportunity to explore it. Again, being encouraged at a young age with regards to my creativity was a huge contributing factor. I was allowed to explore; from playing the piano, the clarinet, drawing, writing books etc. I have also managed to surround myself with friends who are also my source of inspiration. I read a lot of biographies where I learn a thing or two as inputs in my own life. What are you most passionate about? Writing. At age nine, I wrote my first book even though it never got published. I still write in my spare time. But I have future plans to eventually publish one, at the right time though. It is a business related book but I just don’t feel like I am yet in the position to publish a book. Some people may challenge my decision to publish a business book probably because they may consider me to be still new on the business terrain but I see my ability to publish a business book as a culmination of all of my experiences that most people my age don’t have. Who are your role models? Oprah Winifrey because of what I do and Steve Jobs because of his charisma, passion and vision. In Nigeria, it would have to be Tony Elumelu. other people’s businesses and a lot of the business men in Nigeria are all about themselves rather than for others. He reminds me a lot of Richard Branson and Warren Buffet. What is your educational qualification? I studied economics and entrepreneurship at Northern Kentucky University and graduated in 2008. Any plans to acquire business certificates? Naturally because I am in business and hope to publish a business book, I would be expected to attend Harvard business school. But I have no intention to go there as some people dream of. May be, Lagos Business School. You may call me biased but even when I was getting into the University, my scores were good enough to get me into Harvard but the first school I got into was George Washington University and after a semester, I transferred to the school where I graduated from. I like to be a part of and contribute to things that are peculiar to me which was why I chose to go to a predominantly Caucasian school. There was something intriguing about being the successful black student who everyone wanted to associate with. So even though I do feel like going to Harvard, I am however not very particular about it. I believe in school and academics no doubt but I don’t think it should qualify you for who you are. You are mixed breed. What is it like to have an Ibo father and a Sri-Lankan mother? It is okay, it is just about having diverse backgrounds. I grew up in Nigeria with a lot of Sri-Lankan culture; food, words etc. Even my father sometimes converses with us in Sri-Lanka. You do have a busy schedule so how do you ever make out time to unwind? I hardly ever but when I get the time, I go to see a movie, go to the SPA for some therapeutic massage or play cards.

L3 Men’s Trend
Beating
Rain friendly clothes Rainy seasons can be quite depressing; dark clouds and what not, but that doesn’t mean you have to dress like you’re going for a funeral. • Buy yourself some great looking chinos. They come in a variety of colors and are great for the rain. Fold them up to your ankle, and you’re ready to go. • Cotton blend shirts are great for the rain as they’re breathable and dry easy. Khaki shirts are good as well. • Although pastel colors are bound to get dirty, you can always brighten up your outfit by adding color to the details. Belts are a great way to enhance your outfit. If you’re a ‘man-bag’ kind of guy, then throw on a smart indigo blue or a deep red bag.

rainin style

Rain never fails to dampen the mood and with it often comes a lack of creativity and spark, which can seriously dent both the level of consistency and effort you put into how you dress. Dressing inappropriately for the weather is a major style sin. Bad weather doesn’t have to equate to bad style.
Tinnie Tempah in cuffed chinos
Quick fix solutions on how to beat the rain in style.
The umbrella The most obvious way to beating the rain is an umbrella. Go for a full sized one, although compact ones do have their merits. A full size umbrella can act as an accessory on its own, even when it’s not being used. A compact umbrella on the other hand oozes practicality and can be easily tucked away in your man bag of choice. A key thing to remember when buying an umbrella is that you generally get what you pay for so invest in a good umbrella.
The raincoat Similar to an umbrella, a raincoat can be a fantastic practical option if the weather and the forecast are both looking ambiguously suspect. Easily tucked away in a man bag or on a back seat, they certainly shouldn’t be discredited.
Wet weather footwear Shoes are a vital component of any outfit. When you’re faced with rain, your footwear choice should be as pragmatic as your outerwear. • • •
Your safest bet would be to put on a pair of sneakers and run out the door. If you’re looking at a slightly trendier pair, try looking out for high tops in subtle colors. Another great alternative is a pair of loafers with a rubber sole, as they give you a great grip on the slimy ground. Leather soled shoes will not do well in the rain, especially if they’re brand new, and you risk damaging the sole when the leather gets wet. But if you must wear leather shoes, (sometimes it is unavoidable), let it be one with rubber soles as they will fare much better in the rain.

Sneakers After they’ve been subjected to the elements: • Dry them properly, this means naturally at room temperature. Do not use a dryer as the leather can and will become compromised, as will the stitching, and there is a good chance that the welts will eventually split. • Put shoe trees in them, or stuff with newspaper, and leave them for a couple of days.

Put some colours on your plate Nkarenyi Ukonu In this-fast paced world, where people have no time to think about their health, a simple dietary change can improve the overall nutritional value of your diet. Today, due to time constraints, people rely on processed food and tend to forget that food is not just required to fill the stomach, but to also make our body healthy and strong. You probably heard that in planning your balanced diet, you shopuld aim for a rainbow of colours to ensure you get a full spectrum of vital nutrients but interpreting it too literally may mean you miss out on essential nutrition. Here are the seven colours you really need to eat and why
Whites:
White foods often gets cast as nutrient free, boring and bland. True, white flour, white bread, and white rice are starchy, not especially nutritious but it would be wrong to draw the same conclusion about other colourless edibles. Onion, leeks, garlic are perhaps the best examples. Garlic for instance, is an excellent natural antibiotic and antiseptic known to lower cholestrol. It is best eaten raw.

able sign that a grain has not been refined or stripped of its outer bran layer or indeed its nutrient-dense germ. In other words, that the grain is a whole grain. Whole grains offers up a nutritious parcel of fibre, protein, complex straches, B vitamin, minerls and antioxidants.
Orange: Most of nature’s orange foods contain antioxi-
Greens: Green leaves, herbs and cabbages are all rich
Purples: The pigments imparting purple colour to foods
dants called carotenoids of which betacarotene is the most renowned. Catrotenoids are converted by the body into vitamin A while betacorotene helps to further improve the presence of fat. So always incorporate orange foods such as carrots, oranges, tangerines in your diet.
in the pigment chlorophyll which builds blood and tissues and encourages the body’s cells to release accumulated toxins. Cooking chlorophyll weakens its potency. so it is best taking vegetables, raw. Also brocolli is rich in both minerals so is a perfectly balanced food ideal for healthy bones.

Does your breath embarrass you? Judith Frank-Edet
Judithjudith463@yahoo.com Have you noticed people stepping away from you when you start to talk? Do people refuse to argue with you in a discussion and would rather turn their faces away? When you speak, do people tend to react in a particular way? If all of your answers are yes, it could be a sign that you have bad breath. Bad breath or mouth odour, medically called halitosis, is an embarrassing health condition that affects approximately 30 per cent of people around the world. The worse thing about bad breath is that most of the time, the only person ignorant about it is the sufferer. You become used to your own smell and do not tend to notice your own bad breath. Sometimes, the only way to know about it is if someone tells you. However, most people would rather not want to hurt your feelings. You may have to rely on a family member or a close friend to be honest enough to tell you the truth. One simple way to check your breath by yourself is not to smell your breath by covering your mouth and breathing, but licking the inside of your wrist and sniffing it. If the smell is bad, you can be fairly sure that your breath is too. The truth is that everyone has some degree of bad breath especially after a night’s sleep. This is normal and occurs because the mouth tends to get dry and stagnate overnight. This usually clears when the flow of saliva increases soon after eating breakfast. Bad breath lowers self-esteem and affects everyday life and personal relationships. People with chronic or recurring bad breath often lose their self-confidence. Bad breath is associated with a foul oral odour. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, in over 90 per cent of bad breath cases, the odor originates from the mouth, throat, and tonsils and is usually caused by a group of anaerobic, sulfur-producing bacteria that breed beneath the surface of the tongue and often in the throat and tonsil area. These bacteria occur naturally in your oral environment and are sup-
posed to be there because they assist your digestion by breaking down proteins into amino acids. Proteins are commonly found in food, mucus or phlegm, blood and in diseased oral tissue. As the bad breath bacteria feasts on proteins in your mouth, sulfur compounds are released from the back of your tongue and throat. The bacteria excretes waste as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and other odorous and bad tasting compounds known as volatile sulfur compounds. As long as this process of anaerobic bacteria feeding on proteins and excreting volatile sulfur compounds continues unchecked, your breath will become worse and worse.
Common causes of bad breath
According to experts from breath clinics, there are many causes of bad breath but there are some very common once; Dry mouth: A dry mouth provides a perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria reproduction. Long periods of speaking, smoking, drinking alcohol and snoring are a few common reasons why people experience dry mouth.. For healthy individuals, food odors are temporary and normal salivary flow will eliminate it within several minutes. However, those who suffer from dry mouth and lack of saliva find that even minor food odors may end up becoming long term bad breath problems. Foods: Bad breath can be made worse by certain foods such as onions and garlic because they contain smelly sulfur compounds. Dairy, meat and fish contain dense proteins which are used as a food source by the anaerobic, sulfur-producing bacteria that cause bad breath. Refined and processed sugars also provide a food source for bacteria. Coffee and juices can contribute to bad breath because they are acidic and provide the bacteria with an ideal breeding environment. Poor dental hygiene: Inadequate oral care leads to bacterial buildup on the teeth and gums. This leads to gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis, which can cause halitosis because the proteins from bleeding gums and diseased oral
tissue provide fuel to odorcausing bacteria. Illness and disease: According to studies, in approximately 10 per cent of all cases, bad breath is caused by certain illnesses. Individuals who suffer from diabetes, lung disease, kidney disease, cancer, liver disease, respiratory tract infections or metabolic disorders often experience chronic bad breath due to dry mouth. Sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, post nasal drip and polyps affect the airways and may cause halitosis. Other common illnesses than can cause bad breath include nasal odor, putrefaction from the tonsils, tooth decay, yeast infections of the mouth and gum disease. Certain drugs such as antidepressants, high blood pressure medications and antihistamines can cause bad breath because they reduce saliva production. Tobacco products: Smoking causes its own unpleasant mouth odor. Smokers and oral tobacco users are also more likely to have gum disease, another source of bad breath. Besides these, bad breath could even be a sign of big-
ger problem with life-threatening diseases. However, this is rare and it is important that you consult your doctor or dentist as soon as you notice consistent white spots on the tonsils and sores in the mouth with or without a fever. Sometimes bad breath is triggered by severe health problems such as throat or mouth cancers, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, digestive system disorders or diabetes. Halitosis can also indicate dehydration or zinc deficiency. Taking proper care of your teeth and visiting the dentist at least twice a year are the easiest ways to avoid breath problems.
Symptoms of bad breath
According to dentists, the most common symptoms of bad breath include post-nasal drip, a bitter metallic taste, a white coating on the tongue and thick saliva. Most symptoms of bad breath depend on the underlying cause of bad breath. If you suffer from bad breath because of dry mouth, you may experience difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, a burning sensation in the mouth or dry eyes.
Fever, sore throat, persistent cough and swollen lymph nodes in the neck indicate respiratory tract infections which can also mean bad breath.
Tips on combating bad breath
Please remember, preventing bad breath is always easier than treating it. By developing the right habits, you can be effective at preventing bad breath. According to Dr. Tola Eweka of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, LUTH, here are some tips in combating mouth odour. Once the cause of the condition is discovered, the patient is already treated half way. • Oral prophylaxis such as scaling and polishing will go a long way in eliminating the bacteria accumulation in the mouth. • Tooth brushing technique should be re-emphasised, vigorous cleaning of the tongue towards the back to eliminate the white coating, brushing at least twice daily with good tooth brush and fluoride containing toothpaste. • Use of tongue scrapper can also be useful • Tooth brushing and flossing after meals to elimi-
nate debris and bacteria • Spend at least 2 minutes brushing the teeth and change toothbrush at least every 3 months. • Antimicrobial mouth rinses are very effective in eliminating the bacteria in the oral cavity e.g. chlorhexidine 0.2%, Listerine, hydrogen peroxide in 1:4 dilution also eliminates the anaerobes within the oral cavity. • Treat every dental caries, periodontal disease, infections and other identifiable dental problems responsible for the odour • Drugs causing halitosis could be discussed with the physician and alternatives would be administered • Avoid all odour-producing foods or adjust to suit need • Stop smoking is the only cure for odour caused by smoking • Treat all systemic disorders responsible for halitosis e.g. diabetes, URTI, gastrointestinal diseases. • Constant sipping of water keeps the mouth moist, chewing of sugar free chewing gums could also be effective. • Regular dental visits.

M.I This may not be the best time for Chocolate City rapper, M.I as one of his ex girlfriend is currently trying to kill him or so it seems. The rapper took to his Instagram page to alert the public about the Whatssap conversation he had with a guy named Crush D Riper. M.I who ended up sharing a screenshot of the conversation, said the guy informed him of a plot to kill him by an ex-girlfriend who he (Crush D Riper) presently dates. According to the conversation, Crush refused to mention the name of the girl planning the murder, but told M.I not to report the matter to the police. Scared of what might happen, M.I declined Crush’s plea, saying he would surely report the threat to the police in case Crush followed up with it. Upon seeing M.I’s doggedness to tell the case, Crush quickly turned it all into joke, saying it was all a lie and that no one was planning to kill M.I.
