Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial CBN and plummeting Naira

I

t is no more news that Nigeria’s currency, the naira, has been on a free fall recently, trading at 280 to the dollar as at Thursday, which is the lowest in 42 years. Expectedly, everyone is blaming plunging oil revenues for the current woes of the naira, especially in light of the fact that oil accounts for 90 percent of Nigeria’s foreign currency earnings. Before now, the CBN announced that the country’s external reserves fell 0.4 percent as of December 15, 2015 to $29.46bn. Certainly, the depreciation of the naira is going to have a domino effect on the capital market performance. It is a fact that the naira exchange rate depreciation will push up the domestic inflation through higher import prices, even as investors would want higher returns to compensate for the inflation, prompting the CBN to raise interest rates to fight off inflation and thereby pushing up interest rates even further. Although the Central Bank of Nigeria has implemented several measures to slow the devaluation, it appears none has worked thus far, as there appears to be panic in the forex market due to either real concerns or fears spread by speculators. Like every other Nigerian, we are worried at this development and the negative effects on the overall health of the economy. Analysts are of the view that the current devaluation would only worsen the situation for Nigerians as most of goods consumed are imported, even as it clear that majority of raw materials for industries are imported too. It should be noted that Nigeria is not the only country facing falling crude oil

price. However, she has been slow at exploring alternative sources of revenue. On several occasions, we have had cause to remind the authorities that the country has other mineral resources such as coal, bitumen, iron ore, gypsum, kaolin, phosphate, limestone, marble, barite, gold, bentonite, gemstones and others. Unfortunately, they are yet to be developed to a stage the country can fall back on at such excruciating moment. Invariably, the current devaluation is bound to curtail foreign investments in Nigeria, as there are fears that any investor would have a rethink before coming to the country, since it appears there is little likelihood that any investment will produce a good return. Even though the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has been doing his best to curtail the free fall of naira, more still has to be done, as the continued devaluation will have a far reaching negative impact than the havoc the collapse of the capital market had on the Nigerian economy. If nothing is done to ameliorate the situation, there is likely fear the country would be experiencing a future stagflation because the economy is not only stalling, fact is that prices for goods will skyrocket due to importers passing the increased prices to consumers. We therefore urge the Federal Government to take immediate measures to diversify the nation’s economy. The present over dependence on crude oil for revenue should be de-emphasised and in its place a new regime of taxation, agriculture, manufacturing, international tourism and solid mineral prospecting should be emphasised.

association with the Nigerian Army, especially since the return of civil rule in 1999, has taught me that the men in khaki are not the ordinary humans you interact with on the streets on a daily basis. They appear friendly, but not when their part is crossed. Their militarism and out-of-this-world secrecy and operations, cum their harshness to ‘bloody civilians’ (as was often the case in Nigeria) created a deep gulf between them and the people at the time. At a stage, the army was no longer enjoying the disdain and condemnation they got from the public. The leadership of the

service then thought it wise to douse the tension. They created a department of Civil-Military Relations, usually reserved for a two-star general. The purpose was to promote cordial civil-military relations. This feat had been achieved until recently. But the question now is: Where has the civil-military relations being propagated by the military gone? Rather than seek further partnership with the public, the Nigerian Army is getting more bashing and fast losing hitherto cordial rapport with the Nigerian public. Weeks back, some Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) protesters were gunned down in Onitsha, Anambra State. Same reportedly happened on Thursday where about 10 jubilant IPOB members were celebrating the re-

Words On Marble :

lease of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by a Federal High Court in Abuja. Last week, a yet-to-be ascertained number of Shiite Islamic Movement members were also gunned down in Zaria, Kaduna State (no attempt to exonerate the sect’s action). But what is more worrying is that the army is allowing itself to be dragged into unnecessary controversy. A force statutorily meant to protect nation’s territorial integrity has now turned its guns to the citizens it is supposed to protect. One would have expected that the army would dissipate all its energies to chasing terrorists out of Nigeria, and not turn its guns unto innocent citizens. It is no doubt that the much vaunted civil-military relations by the service is a farce.

No regret kneeling to praise God –Ooni ÎÎÎThe

Ooni of Ife and Arole Oodua, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), on Thursday, berated those criticising him for kneeling in church to worship God, saying that “no King on earth is above God”. It would be recalled that an online Newspaper, on Wednesday, berated

the Imperial Majesty, for kneeling while worshipping God during a thanksgiving service to mark the end of his Majesty installation activities. The week-long coronation activities for the Ooni was climaxed by a thanksgiving service on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at St Paul’s Anglican Church,

Ile-Ife. In a statement, signed by the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Ile-Ife, Comrade Moses Olafar, and issued to journalists in Lagos, the Ooni said it was an unacceptable sacrilege to equate Ooni’risa or other king to the almighty God.

“God is the creator of mankind and it is God that made it possible for the enthronement of any king. “The Ooni of Ife has been drawn to a publication released on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 by an online medium known as NEWSPUNCH, in which His Imperial Maj-

esty, Ooni’risa & Arole Oodua, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (OjajaII) was crtisised for bowing to God. “God remains the highest KING OF KINGS, who has kept all Kings alive and had made it possible for me to be crowned as the King of the source of Yoruba civilization.

Representatives, on Thursday, resolved to investigate alleged abuses of funds contributed by Nigerians under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and has mandated its Committee on Healthcare Services to carry out the probe. The committee is to ascertain the level of compliance with guidelines issued by the NHIS in the management of funds contributed by contributors to the scheme, recommend ways of protecting the scheme from abuses and report back to the House within eight weeks for further legislative action. Lawmakers in the House passed the resolution on Thursday, following the unanimous adoption of a motion sponsored by three members, Onwubuariri Kingsley (PDPImo), Joseph Edionwele (PDP-Edo) and Chike Okafor (APC-Imo), on the need to protect contributors to the national health insurance scheme and insulate the scheme from abuse. Moving the motion, Hon. 10 killed as IPOB celebrates Kanu’s release Continued from page 1 Justice Adeniyi Ademola gave the order for Kanu’s release while ruling on the bail application filed by the applicant’s counsel, Mr. Vincent Egechukwu Obetta. The applicant had also challenged the federal high court order dated November 11, 2015 that permitted his detention in custody for 90 days. Ademola said that the released of Kanu unconditionally was based “on the fact that there is no criminal charge against him in any court in the country.” Reacting shortly after his son was ordered to be released, Nnamdi Kanu’s

father who is the traditional ruler of Afaraukwu autonomous community in Umuahia North, Abia State, Eze Israel Kanu thanked President Mohammadu Buhari for heeding the call to release his son, just as Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for heeding the pleas of Ndigbo and other progressive Nigerians. The 10 members of the group were killed, according to eye witnesses, by soldiers deployed to Onitsha in the wake of last month’s IPOB protest over the detention of Kanu. No fewer than 30 others were also reported to have sustained various degrees of injury during

Thursday’s incident. The incident, our correspondent gathered caused panic among motorists and commuters along the busy Niger Bridge area, Enugu/ Onitsha Expressway. It was gathered that supporters of IPOB who on hearing about court’s favourable verdict on Kanu converged at the statue of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in large procession. An eyewitness, Mr. Festus Uyanna, a timber trader at Bridge-Head Market, Onitsha, told our correspondent that trouble started when the jubilating IPOB members were asked to stop their march towards the Niger

Bridge, but the group bluntly refused and continued to advance towards the bridge which has been notorious since the protest for Kanu’s release commenced. According to the witness, it was at this juncture, when the soldiers started shooting sporadically, probably to scare the crowd away, that the ten IPOB members were shot dead. The jubilation came to an abrupt end as members of the scattered and ran for safety. Corpses littered the road, while motorists and commuters who could not bear the heavy gunshots jumped out of their vehicles and ran for safety. However, courageous ones

among the group’s members threw pebbles at the rampaging soldiers who retaliated by continuous shooting as if in an enemy territory. Shop owners and artisans transacting business in the area all shut their businesses as early as 1pm for fear of any eventuality. The President General, Bridge-Head Markets Association, Mr. Sunday Obinze whose domain has been a war theatre could not talk to the press as he was said to be in a meeting. Earlier at the federal high court in Abuja, Justice Ademola had set aside Kanu’s detention order. He also

ruled that the “detention of Kanu for more than two months without any charge is contrary to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).” Justice Ademola further ruled that the provisions of Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria were explicit on the issue of bail and freedom of the citizens. He reasoned that it was either the DSS and federal government were not prepared or lacked enough materials or were yet to make up their Continued on page 12

The minister however did not specify how much would be borrowed by the government. “We need to stimulate the economy because we cannot afford this downturn to be excessively prolonged”. “We think we have the headroom to borrow. We’re

going to mix it between local and foreign debt. We’re talking to multilateral agencies already and we’re at an advanced stage. Then we’ll look at the foreign capital markets. “The budget will not include income from regulatory fines, such as the $3.9 billion levied on MTN Group Ltd,” she told Bloomberg. Adeosun disclosed that Nigeria expects to boost non-oil revenue by N1.6 trillion in 2016, to help make up for the shortfall in earnings from crude exports. She said about N1 trillion would come from government agencies and minis-

tries, which “have always been in the practice of not remitting funds generated”. The minister spoke on the need to audit recurrent expenditure, which is up to N1.7 trillion in payroll alone. “If you’re spending that amount on something, you should be auditing and reviewing it. That’s a process we are just about to finalise,” she said. “The deficits in the 2016 budget – which I based on an oil price of $38 per barrel – will more than double to N2.2 trillion.” Nigeria has a debt-toGDP ratio of 12 percent,

compared with 57 percent for Angola and 48 percent for South Africa, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This feat is expected to aid the country in borrowing internationally. Meanwhile, the naira continued its free fall on Thursday trading at 280 to the dollar at the parallel market. This came as it resolved to demonstrate solidarity on war against corruption with President Buhari who is billed to present the 2016 Budget to the National Assembly, while each of the Senators has been asked to hold a national flag to that effect. The Senate leader, Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume volunteered to personally provide a national flag for each of the Senators on resumption of legislative business on Tuesday. The Senate, against this background, directed its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to review all laws relating to economic/financial crimes and corruption towards achieving speedy dispensation of justice on anti-corruption cases. This came to light after the Senate adopted a motion moved by the Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Emmanuel Bwatcha (Taraba South) on need for legislative support for the anti-corruption

drive of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. The Senate, however, treated the motion as most significant being sponsored by a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which past government is perceived to have allegedly promoted corruption all through its 16 years reign. Leading debate on the motion, Bwatcha noted that corruption has done too much damage to the Nigerian nation having eaten deep into its political, economic and social fabrics. He also noted that corruption is not only limited to the political class, but also rampant in public service, noting that civil servants have wholly been involved and are worst for it. He said while the political class in most cases get involved in looting, the civil servants from the ranks of Permanent Secretaries, Directors and others have been siphoning and looting from the treasury while stashing looted funds in foreign banks. Bwatcha lamented that religious leaders as custodians of moral code have also been deeply infested with the deadly virus of corruption, noting that corruption has over the years inflicted poverty in Nigeria.

about $26,389 000 and another 19,033 000 pound sterling, which is about N13.932 billion, at the current exchange rate, is all that is left from the monies so far recovered from the foreign accounts of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha. The National Economic Council (NEC) disclosed this, on Thursday, after its meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja,, following a briefing by the Accountant General of the Federation,

Ahmed Idris. Briefing State House Correspondents on the outcome of the meeting that lasted for over five hours, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, said that the balance was as at November 2015. Popularly referred to as “Abacha loot”, the recovered stolen funds from the late Head of State had been a subject of controversy following allegations that part of the funds had been allegedly spent on frivolous expenditure by the Jonathan administration. Ortom was joined at

the briefing by his counterparts from Sokoto and Taraba states, governors Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Darius Ishyaku respectively, as well as the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma. On the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), which had already been approved by the National Assembly, Udoma said the governors of the 36 states of the federation had agreed to adopt it as basis for their annual budget development. The adoption by the gov-

ernors, he said, followed a briefing to them by his ministry, detailing fiscal strategy direction, as well as revenue and expenditure projections by the Federal Government. Accordingly, he said states would be guided by MTEF assumptions as they were expected to be frugal in exependiture, raise their internally generated revenue profile and block leakages. Also Speaking, Ishyaku disclosed that the Excess Crude Account (ECA) stood at 2.25 billion dollars as of last month.

According to Sylva, those

members of the PDP that were sowing fabrications about his withdrawal from the suspended governorship contest were engaging in a failed effort to save their principal, the candidate of PDP, Hon. Seriake Dickson, from sure and imminent defeat. Sylva, who spoke in Yenagoa, on Thursday, through his media adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, advised Dickson to stop dissipating energy on falsehood, hypocrisy and deceit. “Dickson should wait for the outcome of the governorship election and try to control

According to Sylva, “The falsehood about Sylva’s withdrawal from the governorship contest that Dickson had tried to mar with his uncivilised vituperations and open call to violence is part of the same strategy of deceit and violence, which Dickson and PDP have employed since the beginning of the election process. “In lie after lie, which we have roundly exposed, Dickson has shown that he has nothing other than deception to offer the people of Bayelsa in the on-going election.

Bad as it were, worse battles await on all fronts as he finally battled to meet his bail conditions. BABAJIDE OKEOWO in this report takes a look at this media mogul’s many travails. In Aghenegbode, a small town in the present day Edo State, as in most communities in Nigeria, the rich and the poor are separated by the size of appetite for highly rewarding adventures; risky, mostly. Wike merely buying time – Peterside Shettima Following tension mounting in the northern part of the country by Muslim fundamentalists, Governors of the 19 Northern States under the auspices of the Northern States Governors Forum have summoned an emergency meeting. The meeting which is expected to hold on Saturday will focus discussions on recent happenings in the region, particularly the recent fracas between the Army and Shiites followers under the Islamic Movement, which led to deaths in Zaria, Kaduna State since last Saturday and Sunday. Already, the governments of the United States, United Kingdom, Iran, Amnesty International and the House of Representa-

While the Shiites led by its leader who has now been arrested, Sheik Ibrahim El Zakzakky claimed that hundreds of their members have been killed by the army which invaded their headquarters and destroyed it, the army claimed that only seven people died when the fundamentalists attacked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai. But Hospital sources said over 60 dead bodies were brought to the hospital with several others wounded.

Buratai However, Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima who doubles as Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, announced on Wednesday night that the 19 Governors will be holding an emergency meeting on Saturday in Kaduna. The venue and time of the meeting has been communicated to members of the forum, he noted. Shettima’s spokesman, Isa Gusau said in a statement issued at 11pm on Wednesday night that the decision followed consultations between the Governors on Wednesday night. He said the northern Governors were worried by the situation and hence their resolve to wade into the matter with a view to frontally

addressing the problem before it escalates further. The Governors called on citizens and all parties associated with the incident in Zaria to be calm and exercise restraint, assuring that far reaching steps will be taken to guarantee restoration of normalcy in a sustained manner. They also called on citizens to go about their activities peacefully and in obedience to lawful provisions. The forum reaffirmed that governments across the nineteen states would at all times take measures that will promote peace and public safety as well as justice and fairness to all citizens in line with constitutional provisions.

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election in Rivers State, Mr. Tonye Peterside has said that with the decision of the state governor, Nyesom Wike to appeal against the judgment of the Tribunal and the Appeal Court which nullified his election, he was only buy time to delay the inevitable. In a statement he personally signed over the Appeal Court judgment which upheld the Tribunal’s verdict upturning Wike’s election, Peterside said if he was truly sure of his victory, he would have agreed to a rerun since he claimed to have supporters in his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP). nightmare. Like a cobra, which out of insatiable greed, preyed on a porcupine to his misfortune, Dokpesi, was picked up in the wee hours of Tuesday December 1 by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged involvement in the now infamous Dasukigate (a $2.1 billion arms deal) during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. Dokpesi, who played a significant role in the failed re-election bid of the former president was fingered to have played a major part in the purchase of arms for the Army in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. According to the anti-graft commission, he allegedly received the sum of Two Billion Naira (N2.1 b) from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Alhaji Sambo Dasuki, a retired army colonel, which the commission said was diverted to other uses.

The battle with Chief Edwin Clark Indeed, if Dokpesi were a seer, he would have seen the danger signals ahead of time. Initial signs that danger lurked emerged when he fell out with Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, an Ijaw leader, over the latter’s ambition to replace former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. According to Clark: “I want to

Edwin Clarke state categorically that Chief Raymond Dokpesi is not a fit and proper person to replace Chief Mike Ogiadomhe in all aspects, having regard to his antecedent. Therefore, I wish to warn those who are championing the cause or lobbying for him to put Nigeria first. Clark, a former information minister explained that events that culminated into his strong stand against the choice of Dokpesi started far back in 2010 when he worked against President Jonathan in the last general election, saying that such a person should not be appointed to the office of Chief of Staff.

Dokpesi Clark did not stop there. He pointed to Dokpesi’s none unrepentant posture after working against the interest of South-South people. The former information minister stressed that judging by the Aghenegbode chief ’s character and antecedents, he might be a threat to the presidency if appointed because of his connection with some persons who took part in the October 1, 2010 Eagle Square bombing where many Nigerians were feared killed. “I am aware of the fact that Chief Raymond Dokpesi has been a regular caller at the presidency for some time now, without show-

ing any sense of remorse and repentance during the aggressive and notorious activities against President Jonathan between 2010 and 2011 particularly, when he was the campaign Director General of President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. “He was connected with some of the men, known and unknown who were part of October 1, 2010, bombing of Eagle Square where many innocent Nigerians were killed. knows what the outcome of an election will be”, adding, “but everyone with a conscience knows that the one we had in 2015 was neither free nor fair nor credible. It can’t stand scrutiny. As we have now seen”. “As for the conduct of future elections in Rivers, it is worth noting the supremacy of the card reader as now contained in this judgment and the way elections in Kogi and Bayelsa went. We still have lessons to learn. My main concern remains security. Both APC and the PDP have shown desperation and an unmitigated desire for power at all costs. The recent black and white march charades can not conceal

the blood they both spilled. People are not foolish. “My consolation is God does not sleep. As for the decision on what I do as the Labour Party candidate, this is not a choice strictly for me alone to make. My ambition is not the priority, the ambition of the state is. So far I have followed spiritual guidance and it has given me peace. This time will be no different. I am not desperate to be Governor. But I will not go quietly into the night. What I will say is I will sponsor every Labour Party candidate who shows a real desire to contest their rerun. A statement on my election will be made when a vacancy arises”, he stressed.

Court reinstates PRP, PPP, BNPP as registered political parties Andrew Orolua, Abuja

Mahmmod

The federal high court in Abuja yesterday reinstated the status of deregistered Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) and Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP back as reg-

istered political parties in the country. The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) sponsored by the former second Republic governor of Kauduna state,Alhaji Balarebe Musa, the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) and Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP) were among the 53 political parties that were deregistered in 2012 by the Independent National Electoral Commission. They had challenged the decision of the commission. Delivering judgment on the suit they filed against INEC and the Attorney General of the Federation before the federal high court yesterday, Justice Adeniyi Ademola voided the de registration of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) and Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP). Justice Ademola said the Independent National Electoral Commission, cannot deregister the three political parties except in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended. The court said that “Section 78(7)(ii) of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended which the commission relied upon in deregistering the three political parties is unconstitutional, invalid, null and void to the extent of its inconsistency and a violation of the provisions of Sections 1(3), 40 and Sections 221-229 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nige-

ria, 1999 as amended. The court further declared that ,”the INEC cannot deregister the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs, being political parties except in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the FRN, as amended. Justice Ademola also declared that the purported de registration of the plaintiffs by INEC on the basis of Section 78(7)(i) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended without affording the plaintiffs the opportunities of being heard amounted to gross violation of Sections 36 and 40 and Sections 221 and 222 of the Constitution of FRN. Consequently, he made an order nullifying and setting aside the purported de registration of the plaintiffs as announced by the INEC in some national dailies in December 2012, as same is illegal, unconstitutional and null and void. In addition, the court directed INEC to restore the plaintiffs as political parties in Nigeria and to accord recognition to three political parties officers and or agents in dealing with political parties in Nigeria. Justice Ademola also granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the INEC from further attempting and enforcing the said de registration policy of the 1st defendant against the plaintiffs, their offices, properties and assets.

brother Charles Okah who is also facing treasonable trial in Abuja and Mr. Edmund Ebiuwaren who is serving life jail term in Abuja prison and who was alleged to have received N5million from Raymond Dokpesi”.

The rot called Daar Communications Sometime in June this year, some members of staff of Daar Communications Plc, owners of African Independent Television, AIT, and RayPower FM Radio under the aegis of ‘Enough is Enough Group’ shut down all broadcasting activities at the organisation’s Benin station in protest over unpaid salary arrears stretching over a year. The workers, who numbered about 50 blocked the main entrance to the station located along the Benin/Lagos bypass, but were prevented from breaking the law by a detachment of anti-riot policemen who were called up by the management of the station. One of the protesting workers who did not want his name in print to avoid victimisation revealed that newly employed staff of AIT were being owed 12 months while old staff were yet to be paid salary arrears between 13 months and staff of the Raypower FM, the Radio arm of the broadcast outfit were owed 17

months. According to the staffer, “The stations generate millions of naira on a daily basis, so there is no reason why we should not be paid our salaries. They have no excuse not to pay us our money. It is wickedness and man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. We have families to care for and children to pay their school fees. Many of our children have stopped going to school. But their own attend schools abroad. “We are subjected to rigorous work without the right or adequate resources, it is expected of us to make “sacrifices”, and it shouldn’t be like this. This is slavery. Underpaid, yet the peanut is not released in due time, and compelled to work under excruciating conditions disguised as “sacrifices”. There were also allegations of underhand dealings in the management of DAAR COMMS PLC public offer. More than six years after shares were bought, no single person, out of the several thousands that parted with their hard-earned money has received dividends nor partook in any Annual General Meeting of the company (AGMs). “We members of staff of DAAR Communications under the aegis of “Enough is Enough Group” wishes to call on relevant authorities, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union to please look into this company that treats its workers as slaves”, the ag-

grieved employees complained.

Payment was for political campaign – Dokpesi Interestingly, in a swift reaction, the embattled founder of Daar Communication said the money he received from the office of the National Security Adviser during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan was payment for media and political campaign for the 2015 general election. Dokpesi’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, had earlier released a statement that his client had written to the EFCC informing the anti-graft body it never did business with the NSA’s office. “What I know is that the EFCC wrote to Daar Holdings asking for a list of directors and whether it has done any business or contract with the office of the NSA in the past and how much was involved,” the lawyer said. “We have written them to reply that Daar Communications did not do any contract with the office of the NSA and we are ready to give them all the information they need,” he said. Dokpesi explained that he was invited by the chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, to “shed more light on some payments that were made to him through the office of the erstwhile National Security Adviser to the

Dokpesi former President, Malam Sambo Dasuki”. Dokpesi explained to the EFCC officials that the N2.1 billion that he collected from the former NSA was payment for publicity and media political campaigns during the 2015 General Elections,” the statement said. According to him, his statement on the various media exposures and campaign transactions which were dutifully carried out were based essentially on contractual obligations/relationship”, the statement added. Curiously, however, the statement was silent on why Mr. Dokpesi received payment for a political media campaign, which ordinarily

should have been the prerogative of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) (Mr. Jonathan’s party), not from the office of the NSA. This, probably, will count among the several grey areas the business mogul would let a heavily alarmed nation into as investigators dig deeper into the matter in the weeks ahead even as he finally battled on Wednesday’s night to meet his stringent bail conditions. But, how well or good this go, will determine Dokpesi’s place in history. For now, his reputation remains a subject of huge conjecture for those who can see tomorrow from his past. Sad enough, this is a field this Agheneghode chief failed rather pitiably. Or, did he see the signs in Clark’s eyes?

Senate orders probe of NDDC, seeks revival of Ajaokuta

Dan-Abia NDDC MD

Olufemi Samuel, Abuja The Senate has ordered a comprehensive probe into the activities of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The probe is to ascertain the level of its impact in the oil communities in the South-South region of the country. The Senate took this decision through a motion; “The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Niger Delta Development” presented during plenary by Senator Matthew Urhoghide (PDP Edo South). It, however, directed its Committee on Niger Delta Affairs to audit all development projects

by the commission and ascertain if the value for money has been achieved so far. Presenting the motion, Senator Urhoghide said the commission was inaugurated on December 21, 2000 with a vision to offer lasting solution to socioeconomic difficulties of the region, and a mission to facilitate its rapid, even and sustainable development. Noted that since inception, NDDC has received several billions of naira from its funding sources, and as well constructed several roads, electrification, shore protection/jetty, classroom blocks, health centres and other development projects across the region.

According to him, “while this seems to be an impressive record, what is not clear is whether the funds received so far had been used wisely and effectively, what impact the projects have had in reducing the incidence, depth bad severity of poverty in the oil producing communities”. He lamented, “poverty still remains pervasive in the oil producing communities inspite of type huge investment of government to alleviate the plight of these communities”. In another development, the Senate urged the federal government to put machinery in place to revive Ajaokuta Steel Company.

It said the steel complex rated to have reached 90 percent completion has the capacity to create employment opportunities for local craft men, physically challenged at home and abroad and professionals in all fields. It advised the federal government to immediately commence the rehabilitation of rail line and dredging of the waterways linking Ajaokuta. It also mandated its committee on power and steel development to henceforth undertake a holistic investigation of the reasons Ajaokuta Steel Company and other steel plants in Nigeria are not operational and consequently advance recommendations for their effective take-off.

A Senator representing Melaye (Kogi West) Dino Melaye moved the motion calling for the attention of Federal Government on Ajaokuta, lamenting that Nigeria in the past 9 years has committed a whooping sum of N2.1 trillion to import steel into the country. Lamenting that the steel sector spends over N500 billion annually on steel importation, Melaye said if the steel sector is revived, it will have the capacity to rival the oil sector. He lamented that despite the huge sums expended on the steel sector in less than a decade, the sector has continued to be bedeviled by multifarious challenges.

He ordered that Chief Secondus should vacate the office within 14 days and said that the plaintiff or any other party member worthy of that position should assume the position of the Acting National Chairman of the party. Gulak had also sought the sack

Shi’ite sect leader, Zakzaky, not in Army’s custody – Buratai ÎÎÎThe

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai , said on Thursday that the arrested Shi’ite sect leader, Sheikh Ibrahim ElZak-Zaky, is no longer in the custody of the Army. Buratai said this when he met with a delegation from the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) at the Army Headquarters, Abuja. The Army chief, who was responding to the request by NSCIA to meet with the sect leader, said

that El-Zak-Zaky had been handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution. According to Buratai, lawlessness must not be tolerated in the society especially when a part of the country is confronted with terrorism. “As a responsible and law abiding organisation, we will do all that we can to always safeguard lives and property. “As for the whereabouts of the Shi’ite leader, he is

not in our custody; he has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution because we don’t prosecute. “What happened was avoidable and unfortunate, we followed the rules of engagement as enshrined in the constitution but what happened still happened,” he said. Buratai dismissed claims in some quarters that the Army was after members of the sect. He said that the army

was only carrying out its constitutional duties. He urged members of the public to disregard information and pictures contained in a section of the media, describing them as a false reflection of what happened. Earlier in his remark, the leader of the NSCIA, Prof. Daud Noibi, said the group was at the Army headquarters on a factfinding mission. Noibi expressed the concerns of NSCIA on the

n marriages, Conflict, Argument, or vehement discussions are inevitable. Every couple will have disagreements. Unfortunately, when a man faces a confrontation with his wife, does he resign to give in, flee, or fight over the differences, which will never yield any peaceable result that comes with effective conflict resolution, instead you could yourself sleep on the couch. Likewise, when a woman disagrees with her husband about certain things, how best does she respond to the situation, does she vow to manipulate or hide facts to get the upper hands? Alternatively, she thinks to know better and challenge her husband. It should not come as surprise that none of these options taken by men and women can promote long lasting satisfaction or peace in a relationship. Let us look then, at God’s design for effective communication and conflict resolution in marriage. It is not demanding to see how in a flawless world in which these divine charges of husband and wife relationship were never broken, Marriages would be peaceful, satisfying, and heartening. However, we do not live in a perfect world. We live in a fallen world, and our natural tendencies are to focus on ourselves and attempt to impose our will on others. Any of your self-seeking attempts to get your spouse to do something “your” way often causes communication breakdowns. Those breakdowns often leave ugly scars. Injured relationships, broken families, disheartening atmosphere, confusion and disloyalty are just a few of the consequences that can mar a marriage.

Biblical Strategies

In order to maintain our commitment to love, treasure, and honor our spouses, we need to yield our rights and ourselves first to God and then to one another. Over the years, many couples have used

most of these strategies to help prevent communication impasses, blowouts, and breakdowns. If you and your spouse have a difference of opinion, try resolving conflict with one or more of these biblical guidelines and strategies: (1) Stick to the problem at hand. Husband and Wife should focus on the current conflict and should try to identify the causes and effects of the problems. They must not accuse each other of “always” or “never” behaving a certain way. It is not wise to put your spouse on the selfjustifying. It is a common saying that ‘’ A problem known is a problem solved. Every problem encountered is there to be solved. A lot of couples ended up in divorce due to their inability of resolving issues at hand. Marriage is all about forgiving one another which is the milestone of true love (Matt. 6:14,15). True Love covers each other weaknesses and inadequacies. The Bible clearly states that what God has joined, let no man nor woman neither situations (barrenness, poverty, in-laws etc) put it asunder. Consider the marriage a life-long commitment, just as Christ is eternally committed to His bride, the Church. Ask your mate if he would like some time to think about the conflict before discussing it (but never put it off past bedtime – see Eph. 4:26). (2) Get on the same side of the fence. Rather than attempting to resolve an issue “my way” or “your way,” work toward a solution that represents “our way.”. Differences are bound to occur, but the ability to resolve them mutually shows the level of the spouses’ maturity and understanding of God’s mandate for them. Resolving marital issues with your own head- knowledge will in one second crash the relationship you have built for years. Never say anything derogatory about your spouse’s personality. Proverbs 11:12 tell us that he who despises (belittles) his neighbor lacks sense (NASB). (3) Try to identify the core issue. Arguments often arise because of events or issues that disguise the real problem.

Consider what attitudes or beliefs are motivating your behavior for indications as to what the core issue in any conflict is. Limit the discussion to the one issue that is the center of the conflict. If you fail to identify the root cause of conflicts and prayerfully address it, you will always end up in arguments and fruitless debates, which are not healthy for your marriage. (4) Do not be a mind reader. Discuss your beliefs and expectations openly. Do not try to interpret your spouse’s thoughts or motives from his or her behaviour; instead, ask direct questions. Likewise, do not expect your spouse to know what you are thinking. Do not try to read your spouse’s mind. If you are not sure what he or she meant by something he or she said, ask him or her to clarify it. Marriage is about trusting each other, In a marriage where trust is no more or not existing, spouses will continue to suspect each other. Distrust in marriage is one of the catalysts of broken marriages. (5) Do not let the sun go down on your anger. Settling disputes takes hard work and can take time. If you have not reached an agreement by bedtime, put the matter aside with the understanding that you will resume discussion the next day. Nursing anger overnight gives the devil a foothold (Ephesians 4:26-27). Do not leave yourself or your marriage vulnerable. Anger is a small madness, if it is not controlled can destroy every good thing that one has used years to gather just in a twinkling of an eye. (6) Avoid character assassination. As you work to resolve conflict, it is okay to talk about circumstances and behaviour. However, attacking your spouse’s personality or character is never acceptable. Character assassination is a deliberate and sustained process that aims to destroy the credibility and reputation of a person. Every man and woman is born and nurtured from different family background having dissimilar mindset. Marriage is a divine institution, which God establishes to blend and mold each other, character thereby

making us to reason as one body. (7) Never forget that your relationship with your spouse is far more significant than “winning” an argument or “being right.” Remember that the resolution of the conflict is what important, not who wins or loses is. If the conflict is resolved, you both win. You are on the same team, not opposing, competing teams. (8) Remember that love keeps no record of wrongs. Be quick to forgive, quickly to admit your own mistakes, and quick to move on from the conflict. This makes me remember the story of a couple, one day they both agreed that two boxes should be made, one is kept for the husband while the other is for the wife. They now said that each person would observe each other character for a month, whatever wrongs committed by the husband on daily basis would be posted to the husband box and that of the wife’s will be posted to the woman’s box daily. After a month which both had agreed, the husband opened his box and saw several offences that his woman had claimed to be have done against her. Nevertheless, when the woman opened her own box, she saw nothing alleged against her by her husband. Does it mean that the woman did not wrong her husband? She did. But the man through true love he had toward his wife, overlooked every weakness and wrongs of her wife. Genuine love is sacrificial and not selfjustifying. In Conclusion, You are the determinant of how long your marriage should last. Any conflict left unresolved in marriage will end up in crisis. Understand each other language and let your marital boat sail through and sincerely commit your lives and your marriage to Jesus Christ. I earnestly pray that whatever conflicts rocking your marriage shall surely receive permanent solution in Jesus name. My desire is to return Daily Times to its rightful place – Anosike -I felt challenged to bring history back – Olujimi

Gabriella caught in one moment of mirth. To her left are Anosike, Olujimi and other staff

The management of Folio Communication Ltd, publishers of the New Daily Times newspapers on Tuesday December 15th rolled out the drums to congratulate its team and workforce who have laboured to keep what Dr. Chidi Amuta described as ‘the resurrection and restoration’ of the new Daily Times’ on the newsstands for the past calendar year. Features Editor, GBUBEMI GOD’S COVENANT SNR brings you the happenings. The venue was Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos - the corporate offices of Daily Times of Nigeria - and the permanent headquarters of the undisputed Patriarch of the newspaper industry in Africa as well as the first and oldest print citizen in the black world. It was a gathering of men and women of proven strength and brawn … all remnants of a rugged workforce tested and tried through the valley of the shadow of death in the newspaper’s

one year comeback triumph. The first confirmation of an earlier rumour that the day would be celebrated came with the arrival of the pioneer editor in this dispensation, Mr. Yinka Olujimi. The editorial department exploded with nostalgia as he hugged and shook hands with his former workforce from desk to desk. Many who only heard of him were seeing him for the first time even as he was seeing many faces for the very first time. Besides members of the team and the publisher/editor-in-chief, Mr. Fidelis Anosike at the anniversary celebration, former Group Managing Editor (GME), Ms Gabriella Osamor and some others made the list of special guests. The arrival of Gabriella, who was the founding craftsperson and general machismo that handpicked most of the New Daily Times crew was electrifying. Like a mother who had been away from her children for too long, she was received with a standing ovation and virtually hugged everyone at the gathering. In his welcome speech, Publisher/Editor-in-

Chief, Anosike congratulated the entire team, himself inclusive. He accorded the rebirth of the New Daily Times to the conscientious effort of people of like minds. Assuring the team of his desire to return the newspaper to its rightful place in the media industry in Nigeria, Anosike used the opportunity to thank everyone who has made the rebirth of Daily Times a reality and promised he would do whatever it takes to ensure that the newspaper continues to grace the newsstands even at the detriment of his own personal comfort while assuring all that Daily Times has come to stay. Anosike also used the opportunity to urge everyone to ensure that Daily Times is made a reference point in Nigerian Journalism industry in the next twelve months. The highlight of the celebration was the recognition of three outstanding members of the team by the publisher. Anosike recognised and gave awards to Miss Mutiat Alli currently heading the

Each received a bottle of Segura Champaign and cash gift of N50,000 with a promise of promotion. Commenting on her recognition and award, Miss Alli said she was surprised, especially because she wasn’t present at the party. Pioneer editor of the rebranded Daily Times, Mr. Yinka Olujimi in his remarks, congratulated members of staff and expressed his pride at the collection of seasoned journalists who make up the new Daily Times, an assemblage he said was as good as you could find anywhere in the country. In her own remark, Former Managing Editor, Ms Gabriella Osamor, said she was overwhelmed with the level of successes the newspaper has achieved in its one year of rebirth. “Let’s go be the best,” she charged all

members of staff. The current chief in the helm of affairs, Editor Biodun Durojaiye, in his address, reiterated his determination to ensure that the newspaper returns to its place of pride in the industry while he expressed optimism that the newspaper would compete for awards in the next twelve months. Mr. Durojaiye re-echoed his mantra of ‘Continuous Improvement’ and prophesied that in the next twelve months, the newspaper will win the newspaper of the year award. Deputy editor/Southern bureau chief, Mr. Sam Nze while delivering the vote of thanks assured that all hands will be on deck to ensure that the paper regain its position in the industry. In an interview with our features desk after hours, Olujimi relived the rebirth of a newspaper with intimidating profile like Daily Times. Was he convinced he would succeed? “Some people might say it was daunting, but I didn’t think so. I knew that it was something that could be done. Frankly speaking, I had no fear that it would fail; you must convince

Daily Times of Nigeria is the place to be. We may not be making all the monies now, but we will get there because the bricks and fixtures required to build up the structure are falling in place - and the workmen are willing and able – Editorial Staff yourself first before you can convince others: self conviction - that was why I could think of doing it – and I knew also that the mere name of Daily Times could sell itself.” Of the unequalled history of DTNl, Olujimi said he drew a lot of confidence from the importance and position of the paper in the Nigerian story. “I know the role that Daily Times played in the past, what Daily Times meant in the days of Babatude Jose. “Even when General Gowon wanted a deputy, it was Jose that he consulted and Jose considered it beneath him that being the MD of Daily Times was bigger than the position of Vice President of Nigeria. If you have that kind of brand in your hand therefore,

you should know what I am talking about.” Acknowledging that most people of the intellectual generation of the pre and post independent generation were both surprised and extremely glad to see the rebirth of Daily Times again, Olujimi recalled some exciting and bleeding moments in the onerous adventure. “You know the number of people who kept calling and praying for me for bringing back Daily Times? An army general called and said there was an error in a caption in the paper and said ‘Please, don’t do this to my Daily Times’. He went on to emphasise that ‘this newspaper belongs to us, not to your generation: it is our paper.’ “So many prominent people, big Nigerians were monitoring and assessing our progress so I knew I had a big brand on my hands and I felt challenged to bring history back. I am glad that our little efforts were rewarded by God.” Looking ahead to the competitive newspaper market in the next few years, Olujimi is optimistic Daily Times of Nigeria will craft its way to stardom. “Daily Times in the next one year must start winning awards; that was what I wanted from every journalist on board.” That it took his gutsy optimism and radicalism to break the three months jinx of the rebirth of Daily Times, the lawyer and print veteran cautioned that an army general is as strong as the weakest of his soldiers. Hear him: “I can only be humbled; it’s not just me, because I also had very great people around me. An army general is as strong as the weakest of his soldiers. All that we were able to do and achieve in breaking the three

months jinx wasn’t so much about me, the accolades doesn’t belong to only me: it belongs to everybody, from the reporters to the graphics guys to Kingsley; people who didn’t have hope of having money, yet they kept on working. “Then there is Obinna Onwukwe (Utility and Head Facility) who always ensured that the generator and everything works in the company. “We started with about seven or eight copy editors, we ended up with just two and we were closing earlier than when we had eight people. Then what do you want me to say about the Nduka Uzuakpundus and the Babatunde Scotts of this world? “So it’s not about only me. Not many people will work till very late, some would sleep there and others who manage to go home all come back the following day - and they kept coming and getting the work done. “Look at the girls who used to write entertainment that were deployed to report business and health - and they hit the ground running; not them alone, some others too. “In conclusion I am very happy with the calibre of people who worked with me; with their joint efforts we were able to achieve what we did. Everyone paid a huge price for the paper to come out every day of the week. “I pray that you all will be able to sustain it.” I feel good that it took a woman to get a man’s job done Gabriella Osamor was the mother Eve that birthed the New Daily Times of Nigeria under circumstances that may have dissuaded many. But when it eventually happened, it was tremendous.” Can you share with us some of the events that shook your optimism in the paper? “Living up to the promises we had before the take-off of the paper. That troubled me a lot.” The welcome you received on Tuesday was nostalgic, how did that make you feel? “It was a welcome fit for royalty and I felt wowed.” If Anosike should call you in the nearest future that, let’s do it again, what will you say? “No, I won’t do it again. of July 2013 and left 1st of July 2015. I am glad I was able to keep my word. I am past working for someone now. My intention is to be on my own and that’s what I am doing now.” How do you see Daily Times in the competitive market of this age in the next one to two years? “I like what the new editor, Mr. Biodun Durojaiye said on the new mantra of the paper, “continuous improvement.” If he is able - and is enabled to realise that, the sky won’t even be the limit: others will be asking themselves, how didn’t we see this? How did we miss this?” How does it make you feel that Gabriella Osamor was key factor for the re-birth of the New Daily Times of Nigeria? “Oh, I feel good that it took a woman to get a man’s job done! It is awesome and all glory to God. That is something we should not forget, all glory to God because we started with prayers and he opened the way.” The rugged team Some of the print generals holding the pillars of the New Daily Times now headed by Mr. Biodun Durojaiye include Mr. Sam Nzeh, a graduate of Political Science from the University of Calabar who began his journalism career as a reporter in 1999 at the Post Express newspapers (now defunct.) A beneficiary of several journalism training workshops, Nzeh came to the Daily Times through the

instrumentality of the pioneer editor of this dispensation, Mr. Yinka Olujimi who felt he needed a journalist of repute to support him drive the reborn Daily Times. Before joining the New Daily Times crew last December, Nzeh was the news editor of Sunday Mirror and deputy editor, Daily Champion newspaper respectively. Segun Adio, the Group News Editor is an experienced journalist who has blazed the trail in Foreign Affairs, Defense, Crime, Politics, Features and Sports in almost two decades of unbroken run. He has undergone training workshops in many local and international agencies and governments including the United States of America, India, Germany, Egypt and many West African nations. Editorial Page Editor, Mr. Okay Osuji is a veteran journalist with experience spanning more than 20 years. He has worked with many media outfits including Imo Newspapers, Owerri in Imo State, Satellite Newspapers, Enugu, Champion Newspapers and National Mirror Newspapers, Lagos. Throughout his journalism career, Okay Osuji held positions as Political Editor, Special Political Correspondent, Features Editor and Editorial Page Editor. Political Editor Akinjide Akintola, was a veteran who was political editor and deputy editor of the Nigerian

Worthy reunion. Anosike welcomes Gabriella

Tribune and The Nigerian Compass Newspapers at different times. In retrospect, Akinjide acknowledged that the last one year has been very challenging though with signposts of landmark achievements. “It was like squeezing water out of stone. But it could not have been otherwise considering the disposition of the Publisher who gives almost impossible directives but with surprising successes. “It was a remarkable year and if the building blocks laid are properly consolidated with working suggestions, we will have cause once again to celebrate in December 2016.” The anchor of the features desk is Gbubemi God’s Covenant Snr who made his debut with the first and most celebrated soft sell magazine of all times – the Prime People back in 1986. God’s Covenant Snr is credited with blazing the trail of integrated features then known as human angle journalism. With almost 30 years experience in the print media, the grandfather of features created and developed the features desk at The Moment newspaper and The Moment On Sunday newspapers, and News Africa magazine before coming on board the New Daily Times of Nigeria as features editor. The entire team is optimistic as they clinked glasses and wined and dined as the celebration closed into the production room. As the celebration closed into production of Wednesday’s edition, the team clinked glasses, wined and dined in great optimism that the sky, as Gabriella had prophesied, is not going to be the limit. The general vision and conviction is that in the print and online mass communication business of this age, Daily Times of Nigeria is the place to be. We may not be the making all the monies now, but we will get there because the bricks and fixtures required to build up the structure are falling in place and the workmen are willing and able. Lo, we shall have a good heritage. Happy Anniversary, folks!

Senate summons Law School DG over high fee, levies

Olufemi Samuel, Abuja

Benjamin Omoike

ÏÏÏGovernor

Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, on Thursday, presented what he tagged “The Peoples Budget” at the state’s House of Assembly. In his presentation, a total of N662.588bn was proposed for the year 2016. The budget is N172.898bn bigger

fees charged by the institution. The Senate expressed worries that the school was becoming increasingly unaffordable to students whom, it noted, were being forced to pay up to N315, 000 for central registration apart side other levies and compulsory laptop computer per student. While presenting the motion, Sani lamented that the tuition fee

charged by the school was excessively high besides the cost of living for the period of studies, which each students must grapple with. He said that the high school fees caused a 30-year-old student to commit suicide in 2014, because his parents could not afford the fee. He said if the astronomical increase in the tuition fee in the school

was left unattended to, Nigerian children in the future may not be able to afford legal education in the country. He said the authorities of the Nigerian Law School should have been mindful that the school was funded by tax-payers’ money through the Federal Government and should have exercised restraint in charging the students exorbitantly.

He noted that the situation had been bad such that the Nigerian Law School continuously charge outrageous tuition fee annually, without considering the impact on parents and guardians most of whom according to him, were down trodden. The Senate urged the federal government to increase funding to the Nigerian Law School as part of measures to curb exor-

Ambode pledged that his administration would not only implement the budget faithfully, but also ensure that it worked in the best interest of Lagosians. “The increase will enable our government to focus on the present challenges of security, traffic gridlock resolution – including physical and social infrastructural development, which has thrown up new challenges

that are quite different from what we used to experience”, he said. He said the intention of his government was to use the 2016 budget to strategically build new infrastructure, as well as maintain existing ones, adding that wealth and employment creation will also receive adequate attention in the course of the year. Ambode also put the total revenue estimate for 2016 fiscal year at N542.873 billion saying the balance of

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, however stressed a need for quality education in Nigeria, which, he noted, might not be achieved in the event that high fees were charged on students by school authorities. He canvassed for institution of scholarship schemes to assist genuinely indigent students.

Nigeria paid N4tr as subsidy to oil marketers in 6 yrs — NEITI Ï ƅƊ ƍƋ to remove fuel subsidy Olufemi Samuel, Abuja

ÏÏÏThe Nigeria Extractive In-

dustry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said that its independent report on fuel subsidy payments revealed that the Federal Government paid over N4 trillion as subsidy to marketers from 2006-2012. According to the Acting Executive Secretary of NEITI, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, the breakdown of the subsidy payment shows that N2.197 billion was paid as subsidy in 2006, adding that the figure rose to N236.64 billion in 2007 and N360.1 billion in 2008. He said in 2009, the country paid N198.1 billion as subsidy for petroleum products and in 2010 the subsidy payment rose to N416.45 billion. The payments skyrocketed to N1.9 trillion in 2011. He also said that the payments of oil subsidy declined to N690 billion in 2012 following the subsidy protests across the country in January of that year”. Orji argued that Nigeria’s current challenges with the crash in the global oil price makes it more difficult to sustain the

subsidy arrangements which appears to fund the lifestyle of the rich, while majority of the citizens wallow in poverty. He however expressed support for the perceived policy shift by the Federal Government towards removal of fuel subsidy, adding that it is a welcome development and a step in the right direction. He said that the proposal to remove fuel subsidy was consistent with the recommendations contained in NEITI’s independent audit reports conducted in the last six years, adding that the policy has served as a tool by the rich to exploit the poor.

He said this during his address at a Policy Roundtable on Subsidy Removal Debate organised by the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. He expressed the view that removal of the subsidy will free over N700 billion annually which can be channeled to provision of infrastructure like roads, education, health service, power, security, creation of jobs and basic benefits for the poor in the society. He recalled that oil subsidy was a financial assistance by the Federal Government to Nigerians to enable them buy refined

products much lower than the prevailing market price. It was also conceived as a temporary measure to provide relief and ensure products availability. The Acting Executive Secretary of NEITI regretted that the management of the oil subsidy over the years has been trailed by allegations of fraud, corruption and arm-twisting. According to Orji, NEITI aligns with the move by the government to remove subsidy and free Nigerians from this bondage once and for all, describing the decision if allowed to stay as a courageous one.

A country divided against itself (2)

Continued From Last Week ÏÏÏ The ethnic character of the political affects the character of the nationstate, since in the ethnicized political it is the outcome of the political game that determines what the people want, can have, and cannot have. When ethnic nations latch on the wrong side of the political they lose what they want and can have. Put this way, electoral success determines what an ethnic nation want and can have in an ethnicized democracy, compromised by politics of ethnicity and identity and lacking the power of mediation. This is how it works: an ethnic nation that does not take part in the fetching of fire woods, stoking of the fireplace, cooking, cannot sit at the dinner table when “food is ready”. Here, the majority ethnic group, the winner of the political game, totalizes power by imposing its own modernity- even if it is only the modernity of political domination and marginalization. This modernity only serves as shorthand for the resurgence of ethnic nationalism, even at the subnational level, shorthand for the blood in the streets and shorthand for understanding the dissident young who, to borrow

from Isaiah Berlin, “take rational forms, at other times violently irrational ones...to defy the ruling powers, to insult them into awareness”! There is also a dangerous dimension that this modernity creates at the sub-national level. Take Kogi state for instance. The fight between Faleke and Bello provides insights into this dimension. When politically manipulated smaller particularistic groups enter the contest for power they create a new victim agency that aligns with their own notion of victimhood. Here, the political is ethnicized and manipulated in a manner that makes mediation impossible. To play the political game, a small particularistic group establishes clientele relationship with a big ethnic group to keep the other small, competing particularistic group out of power. This clientelization of interests further deepens the condition that creates the “political other” and fosters hostilities that heighten uncivil nationalism. How else can one explain the internecine struggle between Faleke (Okun) and Bello (Ebira)? I return to the question, why is ethnic nationalism

Nnamdi Kanu

on the rise? First, the ethnicity of our politics, or the way the political is ethnically framed, compels the enthronement of identity politics and political participation that promotes narrow parochial interests, dissolves organic political unity, coalition and alliance and recognizes antagonism and division. When politicians enter the political fray with narrow parochial agenda, they transform the tension that resides in democracy into antagonism. Faced with this challenge, democracy is caught between the Scylla of tension and the Charybdis of antagonism. It no longer acts in the name of the people. It does not cohere with what we know as “ the government of the people, by the

people, for the people”. Here, democracy is dedemocratized. But, it is participation that makes democracy possible. A dedemocratized democracy that does not admit of the “political other” when a dominant group rides the horse of power forces other smaller particularistic groups that lose out in the political to seek opportunities outside the existing political and constitutional framework. Second, where the modern state has not taken root, or has collapsed, as John Gray brilliantly argues in “ False DawnThe Delusions of Global Capitalism”, the essential precondition of peace and economic progress is always lacking. The Nigerian state, far from being modern, lacks the capacity to preserve

itself against Hobbesian anarchy. Who would blame citizens who seek flight from such a country? I won’t. It is in this light I call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). The idea of a homeland, wrenched out of the “ruins” of our country, may appeal to the dissident young, but what the dissident young cannot be denied are the freedoms to dream, envision what is possible and what is not possible, push out their contrarian views. The brutalizing poverty, brutalizing insecurity and the brutalizing economic conditions citizens face are enough for them to dream the utopian, free from poverty, free from

injustice, free from man’s inhumanity to man. A country divided against itself cannot stand. It falls. Ours is a country divided by ethnicity, by bigotry, by hunger, by poverty, by domination, and by violence. Our country hasn’t fallen. Not yet. Our country isn’t too big to fall. The cracks are widening, exposing the ugly images of ourselves at work. They are not hairline cracks. They are fault lines, the fissures of our neuroses, fractures that threaten our existence. Dear reader, hold this mirror up to our country and take a look at the ugly images that appear through the cracks. Do they shock you? Let the debate continue. CONCLUDED

Art Review In her new book, emeritus Professor of African philosophy and a world leading expert in African history Sophie Oluwole documents why Orunmila, the patron saint of Ifa worshippers which other name is ‘Okunrin Kikuru Oke Igeti’ is no less equal with Socrates, the acclaimed father of Greek philosophy. Agozino Agozino read the book and comments. For persons brought up to regard Western tradition of philosophy as the “ultimate” in the world, the suggestion of a comparison between the father of Greek philosophy, Socrates, and Orunmila, the founder of the school of Yoruba diviners (Babalawos), may sound ridiculous. But it is especially to persons with this mindset that Professor Sophie Oluwole directs her message in her new book Socrates and Orunmila . They need to deliver themselves from a brand of intellectual slavery which blinds them to wisdom available at their doorsteps in search of a foreign brand of wisdom which has proved grossly inadequate for true global peace. That Socrates is the father of Greek philosophy is generally known. But many do not realise that Orunmila is the father of Yoruba philosophy, a world view which has been acknowledged as among the richest in the world especially in terms of its humanism. The 236-page book starts with a preface and introduction that together take 22 pages. There, the professor of philosophy marshals her argument for a truly objective view of philosophy unhampered by parochial definitions that seek to portray it as an exclusive property of the West rather than a global commodity manifesting in different forms in different cultures. She points out parallels in the lives of both Orunmila and Socrates which showed them as leading lights of wisdom in their respective societies despite the fact that none of the two wrote anything down. Orunmila and Socrates, she submits, “are two great thinkers who offer two rational options in philosophical thinking with positive contributions to world intellectual heritage.” The next three chapters explore the personalities of both men according to written and oral records of their followers and critics. Chapter three, titled What They Said They Said is particularly interesting as Olu-

Æs

Is Orunmila a philosopher?

wole quotes profusely from extant records of what each had to say on a wide range of topics from the nature of reality, the nature of truth, the limit of human knowledge, the necessity of education to human destiny, death, good, evil and political rights. She has noted in earlier pages a problem common to both men arising from the fact

that discussions on their teachings are carried out in a language different from the one in which they were originally written. She here acknowledges her indebtedness to the efforts of others like Wande Abimbola, Rev. E.M Lijadu, Pa Olarinwa Epega, William Bascom, Dr Abosede Emanuel, Ayo Salami etc, who have made translations of

the Ifa literary corpus. However, she takes full responsibility for her own translations. But in two separate chapters, Appendix I and II, she provides the Yoruba originals of the Ifa verses quoted in the book. Unfortunately, the numberings are mixed up; such that it is with some difficulty that the reader locates the corresponding originals. From Chapter four, Oluwole plunges into comparative philosophy in general. Citing several authorities, she points out the merits and demerits of their arguments in favour or against both African and Western traditions of philosophy. She launches a robust attack against the notion, especially in the West, that there is no African philosophy or that if there is, it is inferior to the West’s. “The greatest barrier to honest thinking about the existence and nature of African philosophy,” she declares, “is the presumption that no tradition of thought and philosophy other than those of the West can be scientific and rational…” It’s however in chapter six that she submits that “on the testimony of Western philosophers, the fundamental difference between African and Western philosophy is located in their different assumptions about the nature of reality and the knowledge human beings can have of it.” Oluwole notes that while Western thought rests on Binary Opposition in which truth is either or and thus often results in conflicts, the African word view rests on Binary Complementarity/Complementary Dualism where different, even opposing views can be understood and accommodated without rancour. It is mainly on this basis, she says, that African philosophy is by far superior to the West’s. It is in the last chapter titled Postscript that the professor offers her most profound thoughts on world affairs and the fate of humanity and some comments on the democratic rights accorded women in Africa long before the West did.

One of the dance performance at the event

Wajo showcases culture, dance It was a feast of dance recently as Lagos-based dance group celebrates its 32nd edition. Agozino Agozino writes. What is so important about the art of dancing? Of course, it is an entertaining exercise that many have embrace because of its lucrativeness. Today, dance has become a goldmine venture allover the world. This is what Wajo project brought to the fore at Freedom Park, Lagos Island recently. Convened by Oluwaseun Adeleye, the project gives dancers the platform to express themselves through dance. Wajo is not restricted to any kind of dance genres such as salsa, bata, contemporary dance, waltz, ballad and many more were performed to the amazement of the audience at the 32nd edition of the monthly Wajo project. Tagged A Night of 2 Tales, the dancers comprising young and old showcase different dance steps on the same stage. “Wajo, is about dance, and dancers essentially. It is a platform for dancers to express themselves,” Adeleye said. “It also give people quality entertainment that is why it is done monthly. We have been doing Wajo for 32 months now. We tell the dancers this is your platform. You own the stage and do what you want with it, and that is exactly what we have done.” Though in the past dance

is not an area, business people venture into, but today it has become a goldmine where everybody want to partake in. For Adeleye he notes that Nigeria is not where it ought to be when it come to the art of dance. “We are not where we ought to be, but we are far from what we used to be. We have the likes of Kaffy, Segun Adefila, P-Square they are doing great job pushing dance and giving dancers the opportunity to express, showcase their talent. Dance has to be prominent, dance is life, it is a way of life. You can earn a living, build industry through dance that is the opportunity we are giving these dancers,” he said. He urged parents to allow their children to go into dance. “You need to school for it, study as much as you can; read books that you can find, and spend a lot of time dancing, rehearsing, working till you becomes the best,” he advised. It was indeed a thrilling experience at the event as Segun Adefila’s crown troupe shows its uniqueness with a dance piece titled Iyo. The presentation focuses on the challenge, and effect of urbanisation on humanity. The special presentation also highlight how western influence has con-

sume the Nigerian culture which is gradually fading away. “Migration is a global issue now, people are running away from their land. Look at what is happening in Syria, Europe is busting because it is filled up. We want to talk about migration, but we don’t want to talk about migration without talking about us,” Adefila said. However he asked, “how come that over 400 years ago they forced our ancestors to all these countries, and now they don’t have a need for

us again because the things we were doing for them is been done by tractors. We are begging to enter their country, but they don’t want us but it is alright it is there place we don’t have to go to their place, but let us make our place beautiful,” he observed. “The white man does not know the difference between you and I, if we did not speak they don’t know where we come from, they just see us as human being then later we begin to say he is not from my tribe, he is not from my religion

and later we starts keeping enmity and from there people start fighting... what do we do, it is either poverty pursue you away from your country, or something just send you away and instead of us dying in the sea like they are killing our people now lets make our country better.” Adefilia said Nigerians should look inward. “l don’t have to like you, but if l want to survive l must like you. If l don’t respect you and treat you well, you will not respect me. I want

to sleep and l don’t want to have fences and security wire around my fence. l must make sure that people are not hungry around me.” Speaking on the essence of A Night of 2 Tales, Adefilia disclosed that the show is a way of bringing dance, drama together in one platform to enable people tell their story “after seeing the performance it is better for you to chose either to make our country work and people run away or lets us make our country better so that people stay.”

he Swiss Justice Ministry said it had frozen millions of Swiss francs related to world soccer body FIFA, a spokesman said on Thursday, confirming a media report. “US authorities asked for documents related to 50 accounts at different banks, through which corruption money is supposed to have transited,” ministry spokesman Folco Galli said in a statement, confirming a report by Swiss newspaper TagesAnzeiger. He said a “high double-digit million amount” had been frozen following the US query. Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that suspended FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, who is under investigation for alleged corruption over his management of the world footballing body, should be given the Nobel Peace Prize. “That is someone who should be given the Nobel Peace Prize,” Putin said of the FIFA boss who on Thursday appeared before the body’s ethics committee to answer corruption allegations. “His contribution to the global humanitarian sphere is colossal,” the Russian leader said, suggesting that Western “machinations” were behind the ongoing inquiry.

I’m the real victim of Cologne, Bremen row

erder Bremen striker, Anthony Ujah has said he’s the real victim of the row between his new club and his former side Cologne. The Nigerian had been a cult hero in Cologne before he left under a cloud last summer. English fans might even remember his famed celebrations last season with the club’s goat mascot, Hennes VIII, but his subsequent move to fellow Bremen angered Cologne’s fans. Ujah is adamant that the premature release of a picture by Werder Bremen, a month before the end of the season and with Cologne still not assured of their place in the Bundesliga, aggravated the situation. On the club’s Instagram account, the striker was pictured standing under a sign that read with “100% Werder”. “I know I cannot turn back the hands of time and I cannot change anything but it all started with this picture,” says Ujah.

“[It put me in a very difficult scene which is not my decision. If I had the power, I can change it but I cannot change it now, so I can understand that they [the Cologne fans] have to direct their anger to someone and I am the only one who’s in the middle – I’m the victim in this.” Ujah continues: “I just have to accept it and take it as it comes but deep down in my heart, I have no intention of disrespecting the fans or the public of Cologne.” The striker also admits that the two games against Cologne since his departure in July haven’t helped. Ujah scored the winner in their second round DFB Cup match in October and last weekend, they met once again. With the game at 1-0, he won a contentious penalty for Werder Bremen – a spot kick that Ujah then took and had saved by his ex-colleague Timo Horn.

Klopp did not shake West Brom boss Tony Pulis’ hand after his team had claimed a late point at Anfield thanks to Divock Origi’s deflected shot. In a competitive game, Klopp saw defender Dejan Lovren stretchered off following a strong challenge by Craig Gardner. The German said of Pulis at the weekend: “No. I didn’t see him after the game. I can’t say anything, because I only talk about football. “Maybe I can’t remember -I’m not the best, with the biggest talent to remember things like this.” McClean, who played the full 90 minutes at Liverpool, is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying: “I’ve got a lot of respect for the man because he done a great job at Dortmund “But I think he is a bit of an idiot to be honest on the game on Sunday. Win, lose or draw you have got to be respectful.” Liverpool are ninth in the Premier League table and next in action against Watford on Sunday.

van Gaal

anchester United are increasingly concerned about disenchantment with Louis van Gaal’s managerial approach among the players and will discuss the situation just before the January transfer window, sources have said It been learnt that some senior

30

members of the squad have even privately complained to club officials about the restrictive style of play and Van Gaal’s strict nature. Recent United briefings to English newspapers had indicated that the club’s support for the Dutchman remained emphatic but Old Trafford

sources have repeatedly insisted to ESPN FC that was never a unanimous view among club officials, and that some senior figures have doubted him for weeks. That doubt has only grown in the last nine days, as United were eliminated from the Champions League by Wolfsburg and then lost to Bournemouth to make it five games without a win. The uncreative nature of the football has been a growing concern, given how little response it is getting from the players. It is not just that United have been failing to win, but they have so rarely looked like winning.

anchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has told his teammates that they need a “one million percent” improvement if they are to come away from Monday’s Premier League trip to Arsenal with a win. City are third in the table, a point behind the Gunners, and Hart is displeased by what he perceives to be a lack of consistency in their performances. “We need to be a million percent better,” the England international told British media. “We need to step up. We can be awesome when we want to be, so we need to be more consistent – that’s what we’re looking for.” City have had to rely on late surges to secure results a number of times this season, including in their 2-1 win over Swansea City at the weekend, and Hart said he was unhappy about their failure to dominate games from the start. “It’s a shame it needs the dragon to be poked before we come out of the cage,” he said. “I’d say in four of the five games, we shouldn’t have been in that position where we needed to win in the last minute, but it’s nice that we’ve got that. We need to be seeing games out more and not relying on that. “We know what we’ve got here and it’s frustrating when we don’t do it, but it’s a long season and we’ve got ourselves into a good place.”

first Champions League appearance in 19 years followed Juventus’s first league and Cup double in two decades, but as 2015 draws to a close the undisputed kings of Italian football are facing a Serie A backlash. The Old Lady of Turin secured a treble of trophies by the end of last summer with a 31st league title, a 10th Italian Cup and their seventh Italian Super Cup after a 2-0 win over Lazio in Shanghai. Juve’s bid for a first European crown since 1996, however, was halted in spectacular fashion as Barcelona handed Massimiliano Allegri’s men a footballing masterclass on their way to a 3-1 victory in Berlin. Albeit humbling, Juve’s presence in the final was a potent symbol of their return to Europe’s elite after 20 years of seeing AC Milan (two), Real Madrid (four), Manchester United (two), Bayern Munich (two) and Barcelona

Santi Mina scored in the eighth minute and Alvaro Negrodo added in the 31st at the Mestalla Stadium to give Neville the victory in his third game in charge of the Spanish club. “I’m happy with the result,” Neville said. “Tonight it was important to win to build

It was important to do it tonight.” Neville was confirmed as head coach just before Valencia won the first leg 3-1, but wasn’t on the bench during the game. He watched from the stands when his team held Barcelona to a 1-1 home draw in the Spanish league. Pioli on borrowed time at Lazio

azio have endured a terrible campaign to date following the assorted heroics of 2014-15, thus suggesting beleaguered coach Stefano Pioli is on borrowed time. The flags were out in May when Lazio clinched third spot in Serie A, and with it came a potential route into the Champions League via a play-off qualifier. A stunning second half of last season saw the Aquile embark upon an unstoppable ascent up the league standings, while they also reached the Coppa Italia final. Stefano Pioli was marked out as a coaching star of the future after extracting the very best out of a relatively small squad, all of whom contributed massively to an unexpectedly wonderful year. Unfortunately for Pioli, the wheels have come off now with his club residing in a lowly 12th place, and his position appears increasingly tenuous.

! R E K C SHO e r i f a e s l Che ‘The Special One’ Mourinho C

helsea have sacked manager Jose Mourinho seven months after he led them to the Premier League title. The 52-year-old Portuguese had been in his second spell at the club, taking charge in June 2013. Chelsea finished eight points clear last season and won the League Cup, but have lost nine of their 16 league games so far and are 16th in the table, one point above the relegation places. Mourinho’s final match was Monday’s 2-1 defeat at leaders Leicester City. Pep Guardiola, Guus Hiddink, Brendan Rodgers and Juande Ramos have all been touted as possible successors. He leaves with Chelsea just a point off the relegation zone and 20 points behind Leicester. Champions League qualification via one of the top four spots in the Premier League looks highly unlikely. However, the Blues are through to the last 16 of European football’s biggest club competition, where they will face French champions Paris St-Germain in February

and March. Mourinho only signed a new four-year contract on 7 August and is Chelsea’s most successful manager. He won three Premier League titles, two of those in his first spell between 2004 and 2007. The Portuguese has also won the FA Cup, in 2007, and the League Cup three times - in 2005, 2007 and 2015. The incident that led to the dispute between Carneiro and Mourinho Jose Mourinho watches on as doctor Eva Carneiro runs onto the pitch at the Swansea game in August It has not only gone wrong in the Premier League for Mourinho, he has also had his issues off the pitch. A 2-2 draw with Swansea on 8 August was overshadowed by a fallout with his medical team, in particular club doctor Eva Carneiro. Carneiro had her role downgraded after Mourinho said his medical staff were “naive” for running onto the pitch to treat attacking midfielder Eden Hazard. She eventually left on 22 September and is now taking legal action against

Mourinho and the Blues. Mourinho also received a suspended stadium ban and £50,000 fine for claiming referees were “afraid” to award his team penalties in a 3-1 home loss to Southampton in October. He subsequently had to serve a onematch stadium ban and pay a £40,000 fine for his behaviour during a 2-1 defeat by West Ham, when he spoke to referee Jon Moss at half-time. He guided Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League glory in 2004 and 2010 respectively, then led Real Madrid to the Spanish La Liga title in 2012. At 52, he is still some way from retirement age, but he has expressed a wish to coach the English and Portuguese national sides at some stage in his career. In fact, he claimed he turned down the chance to become England boss when Steve McClaren was sacked in 2007. Mourinho has a proven track record of bringing success over the short-term but doubts will remain over his ability to build a dynasty. Will that make his candidature less

appealing to the kind of club he is used to managing, such as German giants Bayern Munich, rising French stars Paris St-Germain or Premier League duo Manchester United or Manchester City? The Blues may be struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table, but they are still in the Champions League and both domestic cups, while achieving European qualification is not impossible. The key for any new manager is improving the morale of a talented squad that has underachieved this season. Players such as Hazard, Diego Costa, Willian, and Oscar were key to Chelsea winning the league title but performances have fallen well below the heights they reached last year. After the 2-1 defeat by Leicester Mourinho said he felt his “work was betrayed” by his players, and midfielder Cesc Fabregas has said it is time for everyone to step up. “If you are a big player and paid like a big player, you must play like a big player and behave like a big player,” said the Spain international.

NCC warns operators to adhere to rules, threatens more sanctions

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it has warned telecom operators against flagrantly disrespecting laid down rules and laws governing their operations in the country. The Commission said it has discovered that dealing with the operators with kid gloves will breed impunity, capable of retarding development in the sector. The commission said that operators should take the MTN fine as a warning to get their acts right as it will no longer be business as usual. MTN Nigeria has December 31, deadline to pay a N780 billion fine for refusal to disconnect some 5.1 million improperly registered subscribers on its network. Mr Tony Ojobo, director, Public Affairs of the commission, warned that the commission would not hesitate to come down hard on erring operators, not only to protect the operators themselves, but the subscribers and the operating environment CONTINUED ON PAGE B2

NLC kicks against proposed N97 petrol price Joy Ekeke The proposal by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, has said at the National Assembly that the government might change the price of petrol as well as adopt a strategy of gradual removal of subsidy has been rejected already by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). NLC has started mobilising its relevant organs, civil society

groups, organisations and professional bodies against plans by the Federal Government to revert the pump price of petrol to N97 from next year. The NLC accused Kachikwu of being an agent of those who were working to undermine the President Muhammadu Buhari administration over his constant insistence on the removal of subsidy on petroleum products. Its President, Ayuba Wabba, who gave the workers’ position

at a symposium to mark the 10th anniversary of Comrade Chuma Ubani’s death, said if Buhari wants to succeed in his programmes, he must be wary of the likes of Kachikwu. Danish bank says oil rebounds to $100pb in 2016 Opeoluwani Akintayo Good news may finally be here as a Danish investment bank, Saxo Bank, has predicted that price of crude oil will swoop to $100 per barrel in 2016. Some of the events said by Saxo that would lead to the rebound include the Russian ruble rising 20 percent versus the US dollar/euro basket. The bank also suggests a meltdown in global corporate bonds could be on the cards – a claim that is perhaps not so outlandish in light of the current scare in the U.S. junk bond market. However, such a “meltdown” would only materialize if Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, opted for a series of aggressive rate hikes in late 2016, the report stresses. That could trigger a huge selloff in all major bond markets as yields start to rise. As it stands, the Fed is expected to very gradually increase interest rates. Although tongue-in-cheek, the predictions have a serious mes-

sage highlight events that could “turn your investment world upside down,” Saxo Bank said. Perhaps the most outlandish the bank’s predictions is the suggestion that oil –currently trading below $40 a barrel– could rebound to $100 a barrel. Prices have fallen since June 2014, when a barrel fetched $114, in no small part due to OPEC’s decision not to cut production, despite some poorer oil producers in the 12-member group asking for a cut to support prices. Saxo Bank predicted oil could return to $100 in 2016 as “unease among weaker as well as wealthier members of the cartel over the supply-and-rule strategy continues to grow. The long-awaited sign of an accelerated slowdown in nonOPEC production finally begins to emerge with a downward adjustment in output. The price mounts a quick recovery with investors scrambling to re-enter the market to the long side – once again bringing $100/barrel prices onto the horizon.”

One of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria, has fulfilled its pledge to consumers as it rewards the first batch of winners in its on-going RedHot Promo with all-expense paid family trip to Dubai and cash prizes of N1million Naira each at a colourful ceremony in Lagos. Through the consumer reward initiative which kicked off this December, Mrs. Obi Victoria, a business woman based in Lagos and Mr. Nnamdi Oji, a web developer and entrepreneur, emerged the first lucky winners of tickets for the all-expense paid family trip to Dubai. Mr. Eze Sonlove, a driver with a hospital in Lagos; Mr. Nwankwo Ferdinand, a trader at IyanaIba market; Mr. Fashola Peter, a civil servant in Lagos and Mr. Habeeb Adepoju, a student in Ijebu, Ogun State won cash prize of N1million each. The visibly excited winners expressed appreciation to Airtel Nigeria for being consistent with rewards for customers through the Red Hot Promo over the years. Mrs. Victoria, winner of an all-expense paid trip to Dubai said: “I am very happy to become one of the winners in the promo. I look forward to great fun in Dubai with my family. I thank Airtel for this initiative.” On his part, Mr. Habeeb Adepoju who won N1million remarked: “This is fantastic; I appreciate the company for making me a proud customer on the network. I commend Airtel for enriching customers experience with the RedHot promo.” Speaking at the event, the Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Ahmed Mokhles, noted that Airtel passionately connects its customers to their dreams and provides credible platforms and spring boards for them to achieve greatness.

as a whole. “If you don’t create room for punishment,” said Ojobo, it can lead to impunity. So you have to apply the law to show that you are dispassionate, not biased, but following the rule of engagement. According to him, “there is a signal now that it won’t be business as usual. We have received accolades worldwide and cannot now make a mess of ourselves back home. The way we manage this situation sends signals outside, on how we are operating

our services here. If you don’t sanction, there are consequences. “This sanction is good for us because it will instill discipline, move our market forward, sanitise our operating environment, and also show that the regulators are alive to their responsibilities in the sense that we don’t have any preferences when our regulations are abused. What we have applied is a carrot and stick approach. The stick was the sanction, the carrot was the waiver of 25per cent” Ojobo added.

President had made it clear that he was yet to be convinced that the ordinary citizen could afford increased prices of petroleum products. The NLC president said: “At the Senate, the Minister of State on Petroleum Resources talked about ‘gradual removal strategy’, which, he said, would begin with the return to the pump price of N97 per litre from the current N87. Mr. Kachikwu threatened of the possibility of the Buhari government considering total withdrawal of fuel subsidy. “According to him, ‘the government doesn’t need to fund subsidy. There is energy around the removal of subsidy. Most Nigerians talked to today would say that’s where to go’. “With the figures being disclosed as the amount our political elite have stolen in the name of security, but which are used to ‘consult’ spiritualists etc, listening to Mr. Kachikwu talk about the so-called most Nigerians that they talked to wanting fuel subsidy to be removed, one can only wonder out loud who these Nigerians that the Kachikwus of this

world are talking to. “These Nigerians certainly won’t be the millions of downtrodden mass of Nigerians who weathered every odd, including threat of violence to vote out the PDP- led government and embraced on March 28, 2015, the change agenda they believed Muhammadu Buhari symbolised. “The NLC wishes to state without equivocation that Kachikwu represents the same forces that have misled past government on the issue of removal of subsidy and deregulation of the downstream operations of the petroleum industry. “While the position of congress on these issues clearly remains unchanged, we make bold to however caution President Buhari to be wary of the likes of Kachikwu, whose sweet tongues on the issue of subsidy removal had derailed former Presidents from achieving their lofty goals.

Dangote acquirers 65.7 per cent shares of TBCG with N10b Stories by Charles Okonji Dangote Industries Limited, (DIL) has acquired 65.7 per cent shares of Tiger Brands Consumer Goods (TBCG) with a whooping sum of N10 to become the majority shareholder of the company, which have been facing financial challenges. The Pan-African conglomerate, who acquired the TBCG to give it operational live-wire, stated this in press statement made available to Daily Times of Nigeria. The statement says; “Shareholders are referred to the tiger brands announcement dated 16th November 2015, advising that tiger brands has decided not to provide further financial support with respect to its investment in tiger branded consumer goods Plc (TBCG).” The statement advised shareholders that tiger brands and DIL collectively (the parties) have been in discussion in re-

Ogun, NSIA, Lafarge present forest landscape restoration initiative at COP21 climate change summit in Paris The government of Ogun State recently presented to the international community, its forest landscape restoration project at the Paris Climate Conference, COP21, following the memorandum of understanding signed in September 2015 by the Ogun State government, the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Lafarge Africa Plc. This PPP project focuses on transforming 108,000 hectares of heavily degraded land in Ogun State into an arable green area through a forest landscape restoration project aimed at launching public and private agro forestry projects with strong environmental, social and economic impact. The project is a pioneering initiative demonstrating how proactive public entities can join forces with a private group to launch sustainable projects that will reposition Nigeria as a leader in Africa on sustainable Climate Change PPP projects. With the theme “regional public/private partnership initiative against climate”, a two-day side event was organized at the green

spect of tiger brands shareholding in ‘TBCG’, explaining that the parties have reached an agreement regarding the terms of transaction. According to the statement, the rational for the transaction is to ensure that TBCG is maintained as a viable going concern, able to retain its employees and meet its obligations to stakeholders, as that transaction envisages that sufficient capital will be injected into TBCG in order to stabilise the business and place it on a sustainable path aimed at creating value for its stakeholders. The statement says; “Subject to regulatory approvals, DIL will provide TBCG with an immediate cash injection of 10 Billion. In return, tiger brands will divest its 65.7% shareholding in TBCG to DIL for a nominal consideration and write off its shareholder loans to TBCG. In addition, tiger brands will assume and settle outstanding

Amosun stated; “the Forest Landscape Restoration project is a well thought initiative, in partnership with two responsible institutions, NSIA and Lafarge Africa. Almost 70 per cent of Ogun State is arable land. There is therefore a significant potential for improving lives and livelihoods. The agro-forestry project is a win-win opportunity for companies and citizens, offering a range of benefits.” “Iit will reduce CO2 emissions by increasing vegetation and eliminating the current negative slash-and-burn practices; it will create employment for young graduates and will help to diversify Nigeria’s economy. SON to introduce reference code for products in 2016 The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has announced that the agency has taken additional measures to combat the influx of fake and substandard goods into the country by introducing a reference code on products in 2016. The Director General, SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, stated that by next year, every SONCAP certificate issued on products must have reference code to ease traceability of substandard products in the country. Odumodu who stated this during a review meeting for 2015 with International Accredited Firms (IAFs) said; ”Going forward, we are introducing additional measures to improve the effectiveness of the SONCAP and some of those measures will be increasing our market surveil-

lance activities and within the first half of next year, to be precise by June, every product we find in the market place without a code, we will interrogate more painstakingly and by September, we will not allow any imported products without the code into the country.” “What that means is that by September, any product we find within the market in Nigeria will be removed and destroyed. I have stated severally that the Nigerian economy deserves a lot more in terms of local manufacturing capacity and the only way we can achieve that is to ensure that Nigerian made products do not compete with products that are of questionable background and integrity,” he said. According to him, in the last four years, SON has entered

agreements with the Chinese government, which he said never happened in order to deliberate on how best to combat the influx of substandard goods into the country. ”There is a renewed commitment from the Chinese government but we need to see this in action. Even without that agreement, the initiative we have put in place in SON would actually help us to clean up the markets. The major provision of what we put in place is the ability to repatriate products and get your FOB value, and the Chinese must ensure that we get certified products in Nigeria. The challenge we have is that our own people go over there to ask for something that looks like the real products. If people cannot go to the United Kingdom or the United States of America to get what looks like the original, why should they get them in China,” he added. The DG noted that the agency is also focusing on product liability, stressing that anybody who sells a substandard product would be held accountable till the agency traces the original manufacturer of the substandard product. ”If I walk into a shop to get a product and it is substandard, it is the person who sold that product that has the liability and until we are able to trace the product to the original owner, the seller of that products will be in our custody. What we are also saying is that we are putting some responsibility on the retailers and wholesalers.

The fundamentals of entrepreneurial exploits (2) ‘‘In the concept of circular economy, businesses utilise their used resources that ordinarily would have been disposed of, through improving and lengthening of the products life and effectiveness, thereby providing a cheaper and steady source of raw materials and supplies.’’ Nwaodu Chukwuemeka In continuation of our discussions of the previous week on the very foundations of business and what the focus should be, we begin with the important issue of circular economy, which in Africa is largely unknown and not very much in practice yet. For anyone to do exceedingly well whether in business or not, waste must be fully controlled and reinvented to resourcefulness. In the concept of circular economy, businesses utilise their used resources that ordinarily would have been disposed of, through improving and lengthening of the products life and effectiveness, thereby providing a cheaper and steady source of raw materials and supplies. Secondly it provides longevity and durability to resources and products, while promoting environmental concerns. By so doing the confidence level and trust of the consumers and suppliers are enlarged, because the life span of these products and their durability and effectiveness are improved. This is achieved through either reusing organisation’s products that ordinarily would have been disposed of, or by re-circling of used products, it can equally be through the repairing and improving on the quality of these used items in order to bring it to effectiveness again. Examples are the re-using of company’s shopping bags, offering after sales repairs and maintenance services, to actual re-circling. Each of these ensures that waste is minimised and products circle are elongated, thereby building more confidence in its durability and effectiveness. This can go for our computer and cell phone businesses, as well as the automobiles, household equipment and electronics. The impact of this would be a minimum of a hundred per cent jump in revenue and customer loyalty. Another salient point for entrepreneurial exploits that must be noted is the twenty four hour

business model, the secret of which is that it turns business centres into the convergence points of the city and a place of surety as to getting any item the customers are looking for. Nothing can be compared to this advantages, in that it automatically turns your business into a cash cow and resource centre. Although in Nigeria one would have to bother about security, logistics and accessibility of customers to this points at odd hours, but it can be arranged and taken care of by working in consonance with the authorities to make it happen, which will secure the business success by rare means. Some businesses are specially located in places where they are naturally disposed to practicing this model and reaping the benefits without having to bother about security, or customer accessibility. In such circumstance getting into it will unleash all the benefits of the twenty four hour economy which are numerous. This concept would naturally work without having to worry about any of these issues in locations like the city centres, locations in proximity to popular spots, and elite hotels and hospitality centres, hospitals and military/para military centres,. If your businesses are located near these locations, I see no reason you shouldn’t take the advantages of the twenty four hour economy and reap the benefits in creating more wealth and enlarging the opportunity space in your community. Best product knowledge is required to make distinction in marketing of any product, for how do you sell a thing you know little or nothing of. It is therefore of paramount importance that you have at your finger tips the in-depth knowledge of your products, which includes usage and impacts, effects, etcetera. A good business person must know inside out his products in order to guide the customers aright in their purchases, as product guide is important in helping the customers make up their mind in purchasing a product.

Enelamah, Minister Trade and Investment

A good business person also needs to maintain a product support and after sales service to assure and guarantee the customers of the longevity, durability and saisfaction with the products they purchase from them. This is good because if you must attract repeat patronages, the customers must be happy and satisfied with the transactions they make with you, for this is the beginning of success in business, because if you can’t keep customers coming back, how do you get to make your huge turnovers to remain in business. The contemporary business model is that of building alliances and collaborations, there is no way you can effectively make the customers happy and satisfied without working in synergy with other organisations and individuals that provide allied ser-

vices to yours. For instance you need to be in collaboration with repairers and maintenance people, if you are in the business of generators sales, pending when you are able to build a fully integrated system to provide all the value chain in your business, even then you will need logistics support, to help transport products to customers destinations and from there in maintenance cases. One will always need collaborations for effectiveness in business. Since whatever we do in business to succeed, all the equipment and machinery we employ, whatever strategies we come up with, they will still have to be run by humans, therefore the interest and welfare of these people should be of paramount importance. So many business people believe that money spent

on human resources is an expenses, whereas it’s investments because the motivation, competence and health of your staff determines the productivity level of your business and for sustainability of your business success, this has to be maintained, in fact the same goes for your other stakeholders in your value chain, like the suppliers, distributors and agents, they all have to be happy and well motivated to give in their best for the success of your enterprise and this is key, if you must get to that pinnacle level in business and remain there. Succeeding is one thing, remaining successful is another, so if your goal is sustainability, then on a continual basis practice all that we gone through in our these weeks of discussions. I wish you all the best.

Seyi Sodimu:

I’m back to take my place in Africa’s music movement Seyi Sodimu is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, commonly referred to as “Seyi Music”. He is best known for his hit single “Love me Jeje, Love me Tender”, featuring Shaffy. The Nigerian International artiste is now based in Nigeria. Recently, he released a brand new single titled (pele pele) which is a re-make of Ebenezer Obey’s (ore mi se pele pele). Seyi, who is one of the pioneers of the new Nigerian music sound, has been absent from the music scene for a while to pursue other business ventures including real estate, fashion, automotive, and many other businesses. His last single, Gbedu was released few years ago. Seyi’s style of music is called Afro-soul which is a fusion of African music, soul and high-life. The style is adult contemporary and is geared towards a matured crowd while at the same time appealing to the youth and the masses. In this interview, he spoke on his career and family. Excerpts:

You’ve been away from the music industry for a long time, what have you been up to? I decided to take some time off to focus my energy on building a business empire. So I have been investing and establishing several businesses including a fashion line in the US, real estate development in Nigeria, automotive sales as well as raising my kids. But throughout all these, I am still involved in entertainment in the background, finding new talents and investing in established artists. And I never stopped recording songs. Your new single is a re-make of Ebenezer Obey’s song, what

influenced the decision? The remake of the song by Ebenezer Obey has always been one of my favourite songs of all time, because of the message and the melody. I love highlife and juju music. And Ebenezer Obey is my favourite Nigerian artiste. I love his music, his lyrics and his compositions are evergreen. I am blessed to be related to him and he gave me his blessing and encouragement when I visited him recently in Abeokuta to take his permission. He is like a father to me. I must say we are really close. After this song, what’s next? Like I said, all through the years I never stopped recording. So I

Movie & Music Correspondent Mutiat Alli

have plans to keep my unique style of music coming and I’m working with a very good team in Bankulli entertainment and with the likes of SHIZZI (Seyi Akerele) to produce some of my new materials. It is time to take my place in Africa’s Music movement. How would you describe the growth of the music industry now compared to when you started? The music industry in Nigeria and Africa has grown tremendously in the last six years, and the structure is still not there yet, but the talent, the media and the people of Nigeria have decided to take music seriously, which I

Society Correspondent Isaac Oguntoye

have always said all along. There is still some work to be done, but social media also has played a very vital part of music growth in Nigeria. Also I want to applaud the big companies like the telecom companies, banks and others who have invested heavily in music and I urge both Federal and state governments should follow their lead. Now that you are back to music, what do you really want to achieve with it? I will like to take my place as one of the pioneers of the new sound of Nigerian music, and to continue to produce and record great music and leave the rest to God.

Tell us more about your family? I am married to a beautiful Nigerian woman from Ondo State and I am blessed with two wonderful children, a boy and a girl. We are one very close and happy family. What’s your wife and kids doing? My wife is an entrepreneur. She runs a group of schools. She is also a co-founder of the Alicemay Hope Foundation which is a NGO devoted to educating women and female children in impoverished areas, alongside my daughter. My children are in school in the United States.

Commenting on his involvement, Ex-Super Eagles Footballer, Taiwo Enegwea who participated for the third time in a HIV-related novelty match, noted that it was his way of contributing his quota as the world moved toward the eradication of the disease as well as the stigma. Enegwea said that, “I am participating out of my goodwill. This is my way of encouraging those living with HIV/AIDS that it is not the end of the world and they are not outcasts in the society. People should also educate themselves on the disease and should not stigmatize any HIV/AIDS victim”. On her part, the Executive Director of YEDI, Anu Ishola, who was represented by Mr. Philip Obialor advised stakeholders to fight the disease together in order to play out this year’s World AIDS Day theme, ‘Getting to Zero.’ While thanking Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and MACAIDS Fund for funding the coalition, Ishola praised the professionalism, sacrifice and dedication brought to bear by members of the coalition.

Brila FM boss, Larry Izamoje set to open Brila Sport TV Larry Izamoje is no doubt a big name in the sport business in Nigeria. He did not only carve a niche for himself in the industry but also broke a new ground by establishing the first ever sport radio in

the country, Brila FM. As if that is not enough, the agile sport entrepreneur we gathered is planning a sport TV which will start running any moment from now. In his words: “We plan to slightly move

again because as you know the telephone is beginning to be everything everyone needs. People talk of video on demand, audio on demand, so we are tinkering the idea of a digital picture based service,

audio visual service which we want to call, Brila Sport TV, it is already being test-run and early next year we should be able to tell Nigerians that we have come on stream with it fully.” Izamoje

The Tanke honeymoon was however short-lived as the babe and Buhari took separate lanes over irreconcilable differences. The gist here is that Buhari is now ever cautious and conscious in his dealings with the public and access to him is restricted even on phone. There are barriers in the way of those who want to interact with him or even invite him for events as strict and rigorous screening is applied while there are ‘boys’ at his Ogidi residence for surveillance 24/7.

The renowned oil and gas merchant whose giant strides in the sector has opened so many business opportunities for the organisation both home and abroad is not leaving any stone unturned. The soft spoken dude is not just a hard worker who believes in teamwork, he has a very humble personality and this reflects in the way and manner with which he relates with people regardless of their social standing. Recently, the amiable gentleman of many parts was wrongfully accused of assaulting one Mr Idowu Salawu at an event held at the Grandeur Event Center, Ikeja, Lagos and he was charged to court. But we learnt that later, the same Mr Idowu Salawu went back to court to withdraw the case claiming it was a mistaken identity. According to Abbey Onas “Yes, I saw the story and I was surprised when I was alleged to have assaulted one Mr. Idowu Salawu

Popular Islamic cleric, Alhaji Buhari Musa is no doubt having it good. The dude better known as ‘entertainment Alfa’ has paid his dues when it comes to producing albums and he has successfully dwarfed the records of a good number of musicians. The babe, a university graduate, then lived in Tanke area and the ‘entertainment Alfa’ practically relocated there while the eldest wife remained at the Ogidi residence.

who happens to be my friend. Though, he has withdrawn the case from court after he realized I wasn’t the one. But I was astonished to see it on social media and blogs that I was arrested for assaulting someone which never happened. The truth is: I’ve never assaulted anybody in my life because I’m a law abiding citizen and I know what law says about fundamental human right. So, to set the record straight, I did not assault anybody, in fact it was the same Mr. Salawu that went to court to withdraw the case and even wrote an apology letter to me through his lawyer. Aside that, I learnt they said I’m a member of one Abe Igi Anu Club. The only club I belong to is International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies”.

Socialite, Otunba Onakoya’s divorce with wife gets messier The end seems not in sight to the controversy that characterized the relationship of Socialite, Otunba Babatunde Onakoya and estranged wife, Mrs Olayinka Onakoya who has since moved out of the businessman’s house after irreconcilable differences some months ago. The crisis has continue unabated as a source said the petition written to the Nigeria Police Inspector General, Solomon Arase by the socialite cum-politician lawyer on how his estranged wife allegedly stormed the Popular Ijebu-Ode Club, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State with acid in a desper-

ate move over her grievances in their marriage but was prevented by security operatives attached to the Club. It will be recalled that Mrs. Onakoya moved out of her matrimonial home after a quarrel over the alleged discovery by Otunba Onakoya that his estranged wife possesses three different names she uses to operate three bank accounts, all contained in the petition. Mrs Onakoya has also allegedly been banned from entering Ijebu-Ode Club, officially by the management of the International Club after several thwarted attempt to forcefully gain entrance.

In a letter signed by Honorable General Secretary of the Club, Barr Gbenga Omilola, the Club condemned the act of Olayinka for hiding under the pretence of wanting to see Mrs Bisi Lawal and Otunba Oduwole both club members, but rather with ulterior motive targeted at Otunba Onakoya, a Club member they have all the right to protect within complex of the Club. Meanwhile, the petition written to the IG on threat to his life as well as the letter from Ijebu Ode-Club have been sent to relevant authorities even as events continue to unfold in the marriage controversy.
