Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial Nigeria: Time to develop renewable energy

T

he recent fuel crisis in Nigeria has not exposed the abysmal state of the country’s oil infrastructure, it is also an indictment on its capability to explore and develop other alternative energy sources. While other countries are frantically seeking out more ways of generating power for their industries and citizens, Nigeria has been stuck in a primeval age of relying mostly on oil for bulk of its energy needs. Such over-reliance on this source had always been detrimental to the country’s energy needs, especially when threatened by some powerful interests as the present fuel crisis has shown. Even at that, Nigeria is still one of the few nations that exports its crude oil to other countries for refining and later re-imports it for sale locally, despite having four refineries, which are either moribund or woefully functioning below installed capacity. The consequence is that Nigeria has become a constant victim of the shenanigans by fraudulent oil marketers and other corrupt government functionaries who continue to enrich themselves at the nation’s expense. Incidentally, the state of the country’s thermal and hydropower plants are not faring any better, as the gas and other infrastructures on which they rely are constantly vandalised by criminals. Curiously, Nigeria, which is Africa’s biggest oil producer and its largest economy ironically, generates one of the least power output in comparison with its peers on the continent. Incredibly, more than half the country’s population has no access to

electricity; while the other half linked to power grids continually suffer from perennial power outage. That is why the government should change its energy policy if the country is to become attractive to outside investors. For this to come true, it must embrace “The Sustainable Energy for All”(SE4ALL), initiative instituted by the World Bank. Report shows that 15 years into the deadline for universal access to sustainable energy, many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are making gain to meet the deadline with exception of Nigeria. In its latest findings, the institution revealed that from 2010 to 2012, the number of people without access to electricity declined from 1.2 billion to 1.1 billion. Happily, most of these gains were concentrated in SubSaharan Africa and South Asia. The findings also revealed that the share of renewable energy from hydro, solar and wind have been growing at a rapid clip and making up 8.8 percent of total global energy consumption. It therefore advised most of the developing countries, including Nigeria to invest more on renewable energy in order to fasten economic development and improve the living standard of its people. There is no gainsaying the fact that developed countries of Europe and America, including such rapidly developing economies of China and Asia are investing more on energy sources such as solar and wind which are non-polluting technologies, but also have the infinite capacities of generating limitless energy for their citizens without polluting the environment like crude oil.

Boko Haram: What good will amnesty serve? Sam Nzeh

ÏÏÏAt the weekend, some

top northern leaders called on the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) to declare amnesty for Boko Haram insurgents when he takes over power on May 29, 2015, making many to wonder what good the call if heeded will serve. The call was the high point of a communique issued after a two-day conference held in Abuja with the theme: “Security and Governance Challenges in Africa’s largest Democracy,” by the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development as part of its “Nige-

ria Beyond 2015 Project”. No doubt, this is not the first time some top northern leaders and groups will be calling for amnesty for Boko Haram members who have since 2009 caused nothing but tears and blood to flow in most parts of the north including Abuja, the nation’s seat of power. This call for amnesty for a sect whose stated mission is the complete Islamisation of Nigeria and rejection of Western education is not only preposterous but also unpatriotic and insensitive. Are those calling on Buhari to grant amnesty to Boko Haram members justifying the heinous crimes perpetrated by them? If the call is heeded, then what happens to those they have killed, maimed, orphaned

or widowed? If the Boko Haram members are granted amnesty, how sure are we that sooner than later other groups will not rise up to kill, maim and set Nigeria ablaze and thereafter some of their sympathisers will ask that they be given amnesty? Granted that many of the individuals and groups who over time have been calling for amnesty for Boko Haram members try to equate it to the amnesty granted to Niger Delta militants, the fact is that there is no nexus between the two. So, enough of this call for amnesty for a sect which to date remains faceless; has never come out to repudiate their stated goals but continues to wreak havoc on Nigeria and Nigerians.

We won’t vacate Kashamu’s house – NDLEA Titilope Joseph

ÏÏÏA test of

wills emerged on Tuesday as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) pooh-poohed reports that a court had ordered it to vacate the premises of a Senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu, who is wanted in the United States over alleged drug offence. The Agency declared, flatly, that it would do no such thing. The NDLEA also expressed surprise that a court could order it not to do its statutory job.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos gave the order against the agency whose officials have laid siege to Kashamu’s Lagos house since last Saturday. Kashamu’s lawyer, Alex Iziyon (SAN) had filed an oral application urging the court to give the order. In his response to an adjournment of the matter by a lawyer from the Attorney General’s office, A. C. Akwiwu, Iziyon urged the court to direct the NDLEA officers to vacate his client’s house, arguing that the action of the agency was against the order of Justice

Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Lagos, in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by his client against his planned extradition. Justice Abang had directed that the status quo be maintained pending the final determination of the suit. Judgement in the matter has been fixed for today (27th of May.) At Tuesday’s hearing, Iziyon sought an order of the court that any warrant or application by anyone be brought to the court and that the court should also direct other law enforcement agencies

to ensure that any order made by the court were obeyed since the NDLEA officers laying siege to Kashamu’s residence are armed. Lawyer representing the AGF, A. C. Akwiwu, had sought an adjournment of the matter on the ground that the case is quasi criminal in nature. According to her, all the orders being sought by the applicant should await the response of the AGF to the processes filed. After listening to the arguments of both parties, Justice Buba, in a bench ruling, described the case as unique in the sense that the ap-

Pharmacist claims major successes in herbal drugs Augustine Aminu & Mathew Dadiya, Abuja

ÏÏÏA leading researcher in plant

extracts and natural medicine and Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Dr. Ben Amodu, has charged the federal government to revolutionise the nation’s health system by incorporating natural medicine into orthodox medicine. Amodu, whose research work has been published in the American and India journals of Medicine and Medical Sciences frowned at the excessive use of chemicals in orthodox drugs. He cited a chemical known as AZT with so many side-effects which was initially being used for the treatment of HIV/ AIDs without success. He advised people with medical challenges to go on herbal treatment, disclosing that the World Health Organisation, (WHO) has accepted the use of herbs in all its ramifications by all nations for the management and treatment of

HIV/AIDS and other related diseases. The breakthroughs in his research work on the cure of lung cancer, dysfunctional erection and treatment of other major ailments has shown the direction Nigeria go in future, he said. “I am happy that the research work that started with Turbid liquid which was analysed in Lagos to have effect on HIV/Aides, today, has turned out to be a massive success in the area of communicable and non-communicable diseases”, Amadu stated. In an exclusive interview with Daily Times he noted that communicable and non-communicable diseases are the major issues in the world. “I can say without any form of boasting that I hold the key to the treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases responsible for the death of over 57 million people in 2008. According to WHO, 36 million was due to non-communicable diseases such

as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, stroke, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and asthma.” “If you take the percentage of the above figure, the non-communicable disease takes 63 % of the cause of death in the entire world. For my herbal products to have answer to that, it means, my products and other similar products would play a great role in diversifying the Nigerian economy”, he said. He admitted that though, there are many herbal researchers in Nigeria, his products have proved efficacious beyond reasonable. He cited one of his new product, SAABMAL, an anti-malaria as the first of its kind in the world. “We wrote about a poly-herbal anti-malaria combination and it was adopted by ANDI (African Network for Drugs and Diagnostics Innovation) - a division of WHO, which took my product without my knowledge, reviewed it and sponsored me and my four other Continued on page 6

plicant has been in and out of the court. “The order of Justice Abang, whether rightly or wrongly must be binding on parties and must be obeyed. The position clearly is that the person against whose an order is made is bound to obey it or go on appeal”, Justice Buba ruled. The judge added that even if it is in the interest of justice to grant the AGF’s application for adjournment, justice would be done on the case if the oral application made by Kashamu’s lawyer was granted. “The men of the NDLEA are hereby ordered to vacate the residence of the applicant in line with the order of Justice Abang “, the judge ordered. He thereafter adjourned the matter till June 4, for the hearing of the contempt proceedings against the Attorney General Federation. A statement by the Agency in response to the ruling was entitled: NDLEA yet to receive court order.” It also described the development as diversionary and reaffirmed its commitment to ensure that the due process is followed in the planned extradition of the Senator-elect. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the extradition process succeeds. The statement, signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the comContinued on page 6

The agency quoted the military as saying that it was analysing the footage to identify the fighters and study the group’s internal dynamics. “They (foreigners) carry arms and fight alongside the other terrorists,” Reuters quoted a senior military source, who declined to be identified, as saying, adding: “They are also experts and trainers.” Reuters said it was not able to establish how many other foreigners were at the filmed event or what percentage of the militants’ fighting force they account for overall. In 2012, Boko Haram was reported to be receiving training from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

(AQIM), although there has been little to back up claims of foreigners at the core of the group beyond anecdotal evidence from civilians who escaped or soldiers who fought them. The footage shows Boko Haram administering sharia judgments in front of a big crowd in a field stained with blood with a man speaking in Sudanese Arabic. “God ordered all believers to enforce his punishments,” the man, whose face is completely covered by a white turban, says to camera. “God ordered us to cut off the hand of the thief and flog the adulterer and adulteress.” Standing in the middle of a circle formed by the crowd and near a preacher shouting into a loudspeaker in Hausa, the man appeared to be overseeing at the gathering called to implement sharia Continued on page 6

Bayelsa Police arrest 27 over cult killings Akam Jame Yenagoa

ÏÏÏAuthorities of

the Bayelsa State Police Command, on Tuesday, confirmed the arrest of 27 persons, including two secondary school drop outs over alleged involvement in recent cult attacks and killings in different parts of the state. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mr. Butswat Astimin, said the suspected cultists arrested, were between the ages of 18 years and 21years. “The suspected cultists were made up of members of the Islanders and Greenlanders groups” he said. Astimin said the command has forwarded the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice and diligent prosecution. Meanwhile, the state governor, Hon Seriake Dickson, has expressed concern over the rising incidents of kidnapping and cult killings in some parts of the state, attributing the development to recent political activities. “From the last elections and

now, cultism is on the increase in the state and we know those patronising and fraternising with them, but what we are saying is that the state is not a safe haven for them anymore. Parents shouldn’t encourage their children to involve in such act, and under my government, criminality will not be encouraged, they should reform and change or leave the state to somewhere else. “Desperate politicians in the state are deceiving our youths, I will not condole such criminal acts, I will flush them out rootlessly, and all those characters that has been demonstrating such act should know that there is a new order” Dickson said. Governor Dickson, while speaking in Yenagoa during the state monthly transparency briefing, said though, the incident of kidnapping had been predominant in the Bayelsa East Senatorial district, the security personnel have intensified patrols and raid of red spots in the state. Governor Dickson assured residents of the state of their safety and warned parents to prevail on their wards not to allow them to be used by politicians.

Buhari should appreciate our contributions - Jonathan Egena Egena Abuja

ÏÏÏFor the incoming adminis-

The out-going President, Goodluck Jonathan, made this assertion on Tuesday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he received members of Universal Peace Federation on

courtesy visit. The delegation, led by a constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), was at the presidential villa to bid Jonathan goodbye and confer him with awards as he bows out of power on friday. The group conferred the outgoing President with Peace Loving Global Citizen award and appointed him as Nigeria’s Representative at Global Peace Council, to replace Nigeria’s for-

mer head of Interim National Government (ING), Chief Earnest Shonekan. Ozekhome, who spoke earlier, poured eulogies of Jonathan, stating that he merited the awards in view of his commitment to peace and stability as demonstrated in his quick acceptance of defeat in the March 28 presidential election. Idiarhi said NDLEA has lived up to the aims of its establishment by helping to curb the unlawful trading of illicit drugs, among youths. He lauded the efforts of the anti-graft agency in the state in

its fight against illicit cultivation and sales of cannabis, adding that government would continue to support the agency head on, in its fight. Foreigners among Boko Haram fighters Continued from page 4 law. A man wearing a black turban stands next to him as he speaks in Arabic and occasionally nods in agreement while another waves the group’s black flag behind them. Turbans in this style are not typical in Nigeria’s northeast. In other parts of the film, men and women are flogged and several have hands amputated while the crowd cheers. A man is also stoned to death after being buried up to his head in a pit. The military says it believes the events took place in Borno State in or near the town of Gwoza, Boko Haram’s former headquarters. The distinctive Mandara mountain range can be seen in the background. There was no time stamp

to indicate when the half hour of video was filmed but a shorter, edited version of the film was released after the group took over Gwoza last year. The discovery of the footage was reported by an unnamed Nigerian media organization but Reuters made a request to view the footage, which it said was granted by the military. The military has not publicly released the footage while its analysts worked on identification and the workings of the group. “It (footage) helps document their atrocities as evidence in the event of any trial,” a senior military source said, adding: “To understand their pattern or mode of operation ... and equipment in their possession with other information, is vital for intelligence.” Reuters was unable to independently authenticate the footage and

Boko Haram could not be reached for comment. Reuters viewed four separate videos. Reuters also saw raw footage of a video titled “Harvest of Spies”, released in edited form in March, which copied Islamic State videos and showed the beheading of two men accused of being undercover government agents. Boko Haram militants have killed at least 43 people in a fivehour assault on the town of Gubio in Borno, witnesses said on Tuesday. The latest attack, which a military source said involved a convoy of around 50 Boko Haram members storming Gubio, lasted for around five hours on Saturday afternoon and ended about 9.30 p.m., local resident Malam Yusuf Mohammed said. responsibilities in a lawful manner. The Agency has therefore refused to be distracted and will continue to maintain presence at the residence. It is advisable that Kashamu respects the law by submitting himself to the due process of the law. “The NDLEA wishes to reiterate that his rights like that of other citizens shall be respected and the due process of law followed in this case. The Agency is prepared to further increase her public rating and goodwill in the areas of suspect handling, respect for human rights and the rule of law. “We are prepared to explore all legal means in handling this case

to a logical conclusion. The Nigerian Government has received a formal request from the United States Government for the extradition of Prince Buriji Kashamu. It also has a provisional Warrant of Arrest on him contrary to claims by his attorneys. “According to official record, Kashamu has been a target of both the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for over 20 years and was further indicted by the Grand Jury in the Northern District of Illinois, United States on heroin trafficking charges.”

Not only that … the product is a one-day treatment for the cure of typhoid and malaria fever and by extension, ebola-related diseases.” On side-effects, he said, “All my products are made from the food we eat. So, I assure others that there is nothing wrong in going through tests and certification of your products. And if you go through these, your products will be accepted throughout the world and it will get a stamp which the whole world will respect.” His products, he said, were in major leading medical journals of the world like the Antipliferetive and Cytotoxic Evaluation of Herbal Supplement SAABFAT6 on HT29 Colorectal Adenocarcinoma Cells, April 2015 (and) The FASEB Journal vol. 29 no. 1 Supplement LB541 Standardization of herbal medicines, he said, should be a major goal of the Nigerian government. A major aspect of this process, he said, includes the assessment of the efficacy and safety of such herbal medicines as well as development of suitable dosage. He urged the incoming government in its efforts to diversify the economy, to see his breakthrough in herbal cure for lung cancer, kidney problems among other noncommunicable diseases as a major source of revenue generation for the country.

Federal Government has flagged off the distribution of clean cooking stoves for women in rural areas across the country. Vice-President Namadi Sambo who launched the stoves, which were purchased for N9 billion, in the State House Banquet Hall, on Tuesday, said that they would go a long way to reduce desertification in the country. The stoves, he said, would also boost job-creation and reduce smoke-related diseases among the rural women.

“One of the global issues today is environmental problem. And desertification in Nigeria is one of our major environmental challenges. One of the major causes is the felling of trees and using their wood as a source of energy for cooking. “The stoves would add value of saving women from inhaling the smoke, which is responsible for the yearly death of about 90,000 women. “We believe this is a very important contribution towards arresting desertification in Nigeria,” Sambo said. She said: “We have only paid 15 percent to the contractor and he has supplied. There is no controversy about the cost of the contract. The truth is that Mr. President and the Federal Executive Council approved N9 billion for 750,000 pieces of the clean stove. “Meanwhile N5 billion was released to the Ministry and

the Ministry following due process gave him 15 percent, which is N1.3 billion and he has supplied,” she said. The Commissioner for Information in Plateau State, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Badu, in this interview with CHIJIOKE KINGSLEY x-rays the escalating crisis on the Plateau since the loss of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 28 General Election. Excerpts: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be exiting from the government both at the national level and Plateau State, What’s Your Take On

This? Naturally, we have raining season and dry season. To me, the end of PDP at the national level and on the Plateau is the end of raining season and the beginning of dry season. PDP In their widest imagination did not anticipate exiting from Government House. How did it happen? It is all about the people; human beings are the most difficult of God’s creatures to manage. If

you continue to put food in the mouth of people, one day they will tell you they want to get the food themselves. Also, no matter the dividends of democracy provided by a particular government, a natural human being will one day wants to test another thing. So it is not because PDP has failed or has performed below standard, but because they people want to test something else and you see, this will bring about good competition

$63.7bn Debt: The blame game begins Bulk incurred by APC states – PDP In what amounts to buck passing, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has picked holes in the allegation by the Vice President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo that the Federal government incurred the debt of $63.7 billion saying it was a misrepresentation of true facts regarding the nation’s economy. Describing it as another attempt by the All Progressives Congress, (APC) incoming administration to further discredit the PDP, PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, alleged that the bulk of the $63.7 billion debt was incurred by APC states. He criticized the Vice President-elect for failing to be bold and honest enough. His words:“It is indeed unfortunate that the Vice President-elect who

has the details of the debt stock chose to be economical with the truth and to mislead Nigerians just to discredit the current PDP-led administration and rationalize APC’s unpreparedness for governance. “Prof. Osinbajo is aware that the $63.7 billion is made up of external and domestic debts belonging not only to the Federal Government but to federal and state governments and accumulating since the 1960s, yet he deliberately misrepresented the facts to give the unsuspecting public the impression that the amount was exclusively incurred by the current Federal Government. “Perhaps the Vice Presidentelect avoided the details so as not to expose the fact that the APC controlled Lagos State has both

believing that the total federal debt component was accumulated under the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, when it is on record that a greater chunk of the amount was inherited”, the statement said. Berating the in-coming administration for dwelling on excuses and reneging on campaign promises, the PDP wondered if the APC and the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari did not know about the economic challenges caused by the dwindling oil revenues before making their bogus promises to Nigerians. “The APC must fulfill its promises for which Nigerians voted for them. Were they not aware of the debt stock and the dwindling oil revenues before

making their huge promises to the people? Were the promises only intended as carrots to mislead the people and deceitfully win their votes after which they are dumped?” the PDP queried. The party said the in-coming administration should stop contriving excuses and understand that Nigerians expect nothing short of the fulfillment of its campaign promises in its four years rule, especially given that the solid foundation for wealth creation has already been laid by the PDP, which also remained truthful and honest in making promises to the people during the campaigns. Unpaid salaries: Osun, Oyo no longer at ease The Osun State Chapter of Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on Governor Rauf Aregbesola to immediately vacate the state governor’s seat over what it called the present pitiable situation of the state. This is coming as the workers in the state have begun and indefinite strike action over nonpayment of salaries running into seven months. In the same vein, workers in neighboring Oyo State have similarly commenced a strike action over unpaid salaries and allowances. The party stated that Aregbesola’s resignation becomes imperative based on the current dismal position of the state economy, education, health and public infrastructures and the inability of his administration to meet several financial obligations of government. The state Chairman of SDP, Mr. Ademola Ishola who spoke after the party’s general meeting held at the weekend in Osogbo expressed shock at the way and manner the governor had been running the state affairs since his re-election last year, accusing him of impoverishing the state indigenes. Ishola disclosed that the ma-

jor item on the meeting’s agenda was the current appalling condition of the state. “We need to show serious concern as one of the major opposition parties in the state and with what we have seen so far, our resolve is that Aregbesola should quit immediately togive a chance for Osun people to select another leader who can fix this state”, he stated. Ishola explained that for the first time in the history of the state, public servants were being owed seven months salaries while retirees have not been paid in the past nine months. He stated that failure of Aregbesola to pay seven months salaries to workers has brought untold hardship to the state while many retirees have lost their lives waiting for their pensions. He said, “As a party, we raised the alarm during the governorship election campaign that with the way Aregbesola was spending and borrowing money, it would be difficult for him to meet several financial obligations of government, now, we have been proved right. “Today, the state education sector is in jeopardy, the economy is in shamble, the health sector is in comatose, public taps

“Ishola explained that for the first time in the history of the state, public servants were being owed seven months salaries while retirees have not been paid in the past nine months” are dry and several government offices are in total darkness as government cannot pay electricity bills. “LAUTECH Teaching Hospital workers have been on strike for months, and we had it on good authority that UNIOSUN staff may down tools anytime from now.

“All the major road projects of his government such as Gbongan- Akoda dual carriageway, Osogbo-Kwara boundary road and East Bye-Pass Road have been abandoned by the contractors. His International Airport site has become a jungle and nothing appears to be working again”, he said. The state SDP chairman added: “Reports showed that Osun received its monthly allocations as at when due including other statutory allocations such as SURE-P funds, ecological funds and excess crude oil revenue. Where is Osun money? Or is our state’s money diverted?” “We are told that the incoming Muhammadu Buhari’s government will bail the state out. Will Buhari who promised to fight corruption just dip his hands in our collective wealth for distribution to a governor who cannot give the account of his stewardship in about five years in office”?, he asked. The workers’ unions announced their strike action in Osogbo, the state capital after a meeting following the expiration of the two-week deadline given to the state government to pay up. Over a dozen states in Nigeria

are facing similar circumstances. The Chairman of the Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Jacob Adekomi, who read a communiqué on behalf of all the workers’ unions in the state, said: “That an indefinite strike action be commenced by all the workers in the State of Osun as from Tuesday, May 26, 2015 due to the failure of the government to accede to our legitimate demands, as contained in our letter to the government dated May 12, 2015. “The indefinite strike action will be total and by this billeting, workers are advised to stay at home while pressing home our demands. That no worker should resume work until announcement is made by the labour bodies to that effect,” the communiqué said. In a related development, the NLC in Oyo State, a state under the control of the APC, has also called an indefinite strike to press the state government to pay workers in the state. The resolution of the State Executive Council of the NLC in Ibadan, Oyo State, was announced by Chairman, Alhaji Waheed Olojede.

monthly N5,000 to 25 million poor Nigerians from across the country, monthly allowances for discharged but yet to be employed youth corps members as well as commence delivery of free meals to school children among other promises”. Meanwhile, Vice President Namadi Sambo has said officials of the outgoing administration were ready to answer questions from the incoming administration over its hand over notes. Presenting copies of the handover notes to the Ahmed Joda’s APC transition committee which comprises the activities of the Federal Government between 2011 and 2015, he said: “ all of us are always available, after this report between now and May 29, anytime you need to meet with us we are ready to come and sit and clarify. “All the (Ministries, Departments and Agencies) MDAs will also be ready to meet with you, give you any additional or clarification that you would want to have on this report that we are presenting,” the Vice President said. Speaking earlier, Joda described the hand over notes as comprehensive, saying his committee would examine the report before final submission to the incoming Buhari’s administration.

It appears that nothing has been left out. It is now our challenge to give careful study and examination of what is contained in these volumes.’’ He said it was the duty bound on the part of his committee to ensure continuity in government and governance, for the general progress of the nation. However, the payment of $32 billion to oil marketers as subsidy by the Jonathan administration has been described as the biggest fraud ever in the history of Nigeria, Senator Bukola Saraki, has said. According to him, the subsidy regime has become a conduit pipe through which top government and party officials siphon the nation’s common wealth every year, accusing the Jonathan administration of legalizing the huge fraud in the oil sector through issuance of import licenses to no fewer than 82 companies. He noted that each of the companies collect average of $2billion annually for products largely not supplied. Saraki who is aspiring to be the next Senate President therefore, called on the incoming government to remove the fuel subsidy. His words, “No matter what is happening now, If you go back to look at it, the major issue that dwindled us was the subsidy management. We are talking of

about minimum of over $32billion wasted on it over the last five to six years. “That is the difference between where we are now and that time. It has impacted on our exchange rate, it is going to impact on our infrastructure, there is no money for capital budget.” On why he’s aspiring to lead the Upper Chamber, he had this to say, “We need to review the way we have been doing things and start doing things right. “I will ensure that the Senate makes impact on the lives of the people. The people are not feeling the impact of the Parliament and they are asking what their elected representatives are doing there. “I will provide quality direction on how to run the affairs of the country. We have to give Nigerians value for their money. The Senate must have a national agenda that will effectively address the multifarious problems confronting this country at the moment. “Nigerians voted for APC for change so that things can be done differently. We need to allow internal democracy to take place in electing the leadership of the next Assembly so that people can elect their choice candidates without interference. Let us not base choice of leadership on sentiment. The PDP lost because Nigerians were tired of the failure in the system”.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 in the future. I am sure the national chairman of the PDP also resigned because PDP failed at the General Election? Well, he has told Nigerians that his resignation is based on personal decision and health issues. But you know naturally when someone is a leader and unfortunately something happened to the group, he is leading, he will want to bow out for some else to lead. But that does not mean his is leaving the PDP, he has said he will

It is said that if Governor Jang had not brought Senator GNS Pwajok who is from his own village to run for governorship PDP would have won the election in Plateau? Those who are saying that are not telling the truth. GNS Pwajok is a Plateau man and if you look at the gap in terms of the voting pattern, people did not vote according to where GNS comes from. Like I told you earlier, is all about the people, no matter how good you are, one day people will say they want someone else. So it is not about the personality of GNS or Governor Jang, it is about the people of Plateau. The newly elected APC gov-

ernment on the Plateau has alleged that the out-going Governor Jang-led government will be leaving most projects uncompleted, how true is this? In governance and in life generally, no man can achieve all he has planned to achieve before he leaves government or before he dies. Every man will die with a wish or a project he wants to accomplish. Every administration has a life span and within that life span, it is always not visible to complete all projects. This administration has completed a lot of projects which have been commissioned. We have achieved greatly and just because our tenure will be coming to an end on Friday; the incoming administration is alleging this and that. They should also know that we inherited a lot of uncompleted

projects when we took over in 2007 and we completed them and even initiated other ones. Some of these uncompleted projects they are talking about are 80 to 90 percent completed, so I don’t understand all these propaganda by the incoming administration. By and large the PDP is ready to give the incoming administration all the necessary support to succeed. The labour on the Plateau embarked on an indefinite strike for almost four weeks now irrespective of the fact that the issue of salaries are not peculiar to Plateau State civil servants alone. Do you think that the timing of the strike is appropriate now that this administration is bowing

Why Governor Jang didn’t congratulate Governor-elect CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 out? I don’t know why they have decided to do that and like you said, the problem is not peculiar to Plateau as it is a national issue, but as far as Plateau is concerned, Labour has become partisan. When we inherited the government in 2007 from Joshua Dariye, the economy was a bit stable and yet we met the Civil Servants on strike. It was when we took over that they resume work. Well maybe its a unique way of doing things by the Civil Servants on the Plateau to embark on strike at the end of every administration. What is the debt profile of Plateau State? It is not for me to say. Labour is not talking about the massive con-

struction of road networks now visible in the state; they are not talking about the renovated Civil Servant secretariat and other massive projects that this administration has accomplished. The debt collected was used to build all these infrastructure and no government can exonerate itself from debt. You are a member of the transition committee that will be handing over to the APC elected government. Would you say, you are having a hitch free transition relationship with the APC team? if we are as some people from some quarters have alleged, then the entire committee would have been in crisis and the activities that will usher in the new government which started few days back wouldn’t have been possible. In the spirit of sportsmanship, why has Governor Jang not congratulated the governor-elect? As the Commissioner for Information, on behalf of the Plateau State Government, I issued a congratulatory message to all that won in the elections irrespective of position including the Governor-elect and the President-elect. So Governor Jang cannot remove himself from the government of Plateau State. In this light, he has congratulated the Governor-Elect.

The Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), has cautioned the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop apportioning blame on the outgoing Federal Government led by President Goodluck Jonathan, but should think on how to fulfill the party’s electioneering campaign promises. In a statement by its chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, it said good governance should be the priority of the party at the centre stressing that Nigerians are expecting the party to surpass the achievements of the PDP from the period of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s government in 1999 to date in the governance of this country. The group insisted that by now, good governance for the common good of Nigerians should be the utmost concern of the APC, rather than turning the ruling party to opposition political party as a way to cover their possible non-performance in government. According to the group, all hands must be on deck within the party hierarchy in tackling the present economic problem facing the nation and how to call various States ruled by the party owing workers between

four to eight months’ salary to ensure the payment of the outstanding salaries without further delay. According to Sulaiman,” It seems APC is not ready to govern the country through their recent outburst, instead of coming out with their good governance blue print, they have now turned themselves to opposition leaders and they should know that people of the country would not accept any excuse for non-performance from them. By now, APC leaders should think on how to fulfill their electioneering campaign promises to the Nigerian masses, instead of apportioning blame on President Jonathan’s government. “President Jonathan has done his best and posterity will judge him accordingly. Blaming of President Jonathan should not be their priority now. People thought that APC as a political party has the political will to reengineering the country from Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s foundation in 1999 and people will not accept less from them. Every Nigeria knows that Chief Obasanjo laid a bad foundation for our democracy between 1999 to 2007 and that is why people believe in the change ideology of APC and to whom much is given, the much is expected”, the stressed.

“The party said it was also on record that part of the contemporary borrowing from the domestic bond market was occasioned by the global economic and financial crisis as well as the downturn in crude oil revenue, which adversely affected other economies of the world”

Nwachukwu noted that his organisation shared the governor’s vision of upholding and enhancing the integrity of traditional and cultural institutions, especially in Igbo land. “It is our belief that Governor Okorocha would continue to embrace accountability, transparency and good governance, while bringing development to the entire state, he said.” He therefore called on people of the state to support the administration, even as he urged those aggrieved to join hands with the governor in making the state the pride of the nation.

Bayelsa politicians disagree over 2011 stoning of Buhari Akam James Yenagoa

ÏÏÏThere seems to be some con-

troversy in the camp of ex-aides of the former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, on Tuedsay, over who was responsible for the planning and execution of the 2011 stoning attack on the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, when he was in the state during a political campaign as the standard-bearer of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). A pro-democracy group, the Niger Delta Youth Forum, led by the former Special Assistant to Sylva on Scholarship Matters, Hon. Mike Olomu, described the outburst of the former security

adviser to Sylva, Chief Richard Kpodo, as a show of ingratitude and complicity in the incident, describing as “untrue” and “blame shifting.” The Former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, during the Sylva admionistartion, said the silence of the former security adviser and the decision to open up on the incident showed that he was being sponsored by some persons in the present administration in the state. The Niger Delta Youth Forum, in a statement signed by Olomu, said the outburst on the 2011 attack on Buhari showed that he knew more than he had revealed. Said he: “I can recall that the former governor, Mr. Timipre Sylva,

was not in town during the incident. And the man in charge of security was the same Richard Kpodo, so how can he claim it was the governor?” “Kpodo was part of the administration and he is accusing the governor for the failure of the security office to protect the President-elect when he visited. He is engaged in shifting of blames. We as a group, have prepared a strongly-worded petition to be forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police for a detail investigation into the incident. And to unravel the mysterious use of the State Security team known as Famou Tamgbe to intimidate political office holders. Kpodo is culpable and must be prosecuted.”

incoming Buhari administration was on Tuesday, given an opportunity by the Supreme Court to resolve the Excess Crude Oil Account’s suit through an out-of-court settlement. Five states – Bauchi, Taraba, Abia, Niger and Oyo – had, through their attorneys-general, filed a similar suit on the matter, and for which the Supreme Court decided to hear Bauchi’s and to make its decision binding on the other four. At the hearing of the matter, be-

fore a full panel of the apex court, counsel to the Federal Government (defendant), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), pleaded with the court to grant an adjournment to enable the parties reach an amicable out-of-court settlement, in the light of the fact that a new administration would be inaugurated on May 29, at the centre and in Bauchi State. He said that government was a continued process and it was desirable to allow the new governments to settle down and to give its views on the matter. Yusuf Ali (SAN), who represented the Attorney-General of

Bauchi State, did not object to the motion for adjournment, as he nodded at an out-of-court settlement, if the federal government was interested. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, advised both parties to work diligently and ensure that the matter was resolve. He adjourned the matter to December 8, 2015 and warned that failure to resolve their differences would mean the matter would start afresh, because a member of the panel would have retired from the bench before that date.

Inaugurating the NSDC suites, Aliyu urged the people of the state to establish hospitality and recreation businesses irrespective of their religious inclination. He said the measure would attract investors thereby boosting economic activities, create jobs, wealth and increase the revenue base of the state. “Many communities may remain poor because of their religious injunctions. ISIS claims credit for Tunis barracks shooting

A Tunisian army officer stands guard outside the Bouchoucha Military Base after shooting in Tunis, Tunisia, May 25, 2015.

ÏÏÏ The Islamic State group has

claimed responsibility for a shooting rampage by a Tunisian soldier that left seven of his comrades dead and 10 others wounded Monday at a Tunis army barracks. The shooting spree, by a sergeant named by officials as Mehdi Jaami, at a flag-raising ceremony at the Bouchoucha barracks came just two months after jihadists launched a terror attack on a land-

mark Tunis museum that left 22 dead. According to eyewitness accounts, Jaami stabbed a fellow solider and grabbed his weapon, turning the gun on fellow soldiers before being shot dead himself. A colonel was among those killed. This latest incident has Tunisians nervous and fearful of the impact it may have on already flagging tourism.

ÏÏÏResidents of Beni, a town in

the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, are on a tax strike following a series of massacres in the area. Local activists have called for the strike to go on until security is restored. Civil society groups in Beni territory say the death toll from killings and massacres in the area since last October is now well more than 300. The United Nations believes Ugandan Islamist ADF rebels are mainly responsible for these atrocities. Government troops and U.N.

Following the shooting, Tunisian officials were quick to insist the bloody rampage had no links with terrorism, saying that 36-year-old Jaami had been suffering from a mental illness. He had family and psychological issues and had been, “banned from carrying weapons,” said defense ministry spokesman Belhassen Oueslati. He had been moved to a “non-sensitive unit” weeks before

the assault. “He had been high strung for weeks and had become undisciplined," said the spokesman, who described the incident as an "isolated act, not a terrorist act.” International media outlets have questioned the defense ministry claims while local newspapers have been readier to accept the official line. Doubts about defense officials’ explanation will be fueled by a statement posted Tuesday on a jihadist website in which North African extremists affiliated with the so-called Islamic State claim responsibility for the shooting. In the statement Jaami is praised as a “lone lion.” The details of the attack posted on Afriqiyah Media matched those provided by Tunisian authorities. In several recent terrorist attacks carried out by so-called “lone wolves” in France, America and Saudi Arabia, the Islamic State has claimed credit. Sometimes the links have been thin with the attackers swearing allegiance to the Islamic State just before carrying out an attack, allowing the extremist group to later brag of its involvement, despite the fact it hadn’t been involved in selecting the target or planning the attack, and was merely an inspiration from afar for the assailant.

Social Democratic Front communicator Denis Kemlemo said his party was celebrating the liberty and freedom of speech it has brought to Cameroon since its creation in 1990. "When the SDF was launched, it was a taboo to criticize the regime. It was taboo to say anything that was contrary to all the abuses that Cameroonians were facing. So many newspapers were seized, journalists arrested, some killed, in fact we were living under marshal law and so that was a big success that we break through that barrier, that obstacle, that barricade," he said.

peacekeepers have been engaged in heavy fighting against the ADF, suffering casualties, but inflicting heavy losses on the rebels. The slaughter of 20 people in a suburb of Beni two weeks ago was the signal for another wave of protests. Citizens held demonstrations and stayed away from work for a week. The president of civil society groups in Beni town, Gilbert Kambale, then announced a change of tactics. He said for humanitarian reasons people should go back to work, as they could not afford not to, and instead they

should show their discontent by refusing to pay taxes. A spokesman for civil society in North Kivu province, Djento Maundu, told VOA the tax strike is nearly a week old and is continuing. He said the taxes that are not being paid are stallholder fees, and he said some larger taxes paid by businesses to the DGI - the general tax office. He said some better off individuals in Beni, who are more dependent on the government are still paying taxes to the DGI, but many other business people are not.

Cholera outbreak drops among Burundi refugees in Tanzania ÏÏÏA cholera outbreak raging

Last week, the agency reported an average of 300-400 cases daily. "The reduction in cases is largely due to the concerted approach to contain the spread of the outbreak through intensified measures to promote hygiene," he said. "For now the situation is improving, but clearly resolving it fully may take several weeks," he added. The number of deaths had been revised down from 31 to 30 after one of the deaths reported last

week was reclassified, Edwards said. The World Health Organisation, which is also working to contain the outbreak, confirmed the drop in cases, but urged continued vigilance. "Despite the downward trend we have seen in the last few days the situation is still dire," Rufaro Chatora, WHO representative in the region, told reporters in a conference call.He pointed out that cholera was endemic to the region, and also existed on the Burundi side of the border.

The world's poorest nations, the bulk of which are in sub-Saharan Africa, are receiving less than a third of development aid, and this support is waning, a non-governmental organisation founded by U2 frontman Bono said on Tuesday. World leaders should target the most disadvantaged nations when they adopt a new set of goals to eradicate extreme poverty this September, the advocacy group ONE said in a statement. "We won't see an end to extreme poverty unless leaders shift focus to the poorest countries and poorest people, especially girls and women," said ONE's global policy director Eloise Todd in a statement on the publication of the report entitled: "Putting the Poorest First." "Despite multiple summits to debate these issues there's a shocking lack of global commitment to deliver genuine, life-changing commitments for the world's poorest and hardest to reach," she added. Ahead of a meeting of the G7 group of major industrialised countries in Germany next week, the report said that the majority of the European Union nations had not lived up to their decadeold commitment to raise development assistance to 0.7% of their gross national income (GNI).

Russia conducts huge Air Force drill in Siberia ÏÏÏRussia's

Defense Ministry said it has kicked off air force exercises in the Ural mountains and western Siberia involving 12,000 soldiers and 250 aircraft. The manoeuvres, which began on May 25 and are to last until May 28, are meant to help the military prepare for a larger drill in September, called Tsentr-2015. After Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in March 2014, Russia has held numerous large-scale military drills checking combat readiness. In a statement on its website, the ministry described the drill as a "massive surprise inspection," to check combat readiness and develop a command system in field conditions. The statement added that the drills in the Central Military District have been reinforced by units from the Western and Southern military districts as well as longrange aircraft.

people were killed in a fire at a home for senior citizens in China's central Henan province, state media said, the latest disaster in a country with a poor record on work safety. The fire broke out late on Monday at the "privately-owned Kangleyuan rest home in Lushan county", the official Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday, citing local authorities. The cause of the fire, which injured another six people, was unclear, Xinhua said. Rescue efforts were still underway. China has a history of similar disasters. Workers are often poorly trained or ill-equipped to protect themselves from accidents. A fire at a warehouse in Guangdong province killed at least 17 people in February, and a blaze at a poultry slaughterhouse in the northeastern province of Jilin in June 2013 killed 120 people. The average age is rising in China, the world's most populated country, and demographers have said government limits on family size threaten the future of the economy as fewer people are left to pay and care for a greying population. One in four Chinese will be older than 60 by 2030, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

13 killed in Mexico tornado

ÏÏÏAt least 13 people have been

killed by a tornado that hit the northern Mexico border city of Ciudad Acuna. Hundreds of homes have also been damaged or destroyed in the city, in Coahuila state, just across the border from Del Rio, Texas. Coahuila Governor Ruben Moreira, on a visit to the stricken area, said 10 adults and three children had died and a baby was missing. Another 150 people had been taken to hospital, he said. Media caption footage showed cars being washed away and the aftermath of flooding in the US The authorities said that more than 1,000 homes have been damaged by the storm. At one point the tornado reached a speed of 270-300km/h

Multiple Taliban raids kill 26 Afghan police ÏÏÏAt least 26 Afghan police or

soldiers have been killed in multiple Taliban attacks in the volatile south, including a 16-hour siege of a college dormitory, officials said on Tuesday. The violence over a 24-hour period comes as the insurgents step ped up attacks on government

(168-186mph). Most of those who died were walking on the street when it struck, officials said. The missing baby's child carrier was ripped from its mother's hands by a sudden gust of wind, Coahuila state Interior Secretary Victor Zamora told the AP news agency. Ciudad Acuna Mayor Evaristo Lenin Perez said that it was the first tornado to hit Acuna since the city's foundation, more than 100 years ago. Rescuers were searching the 750 damaged properties for more casualties. A passenger bus was flipped over and twisted by the force of the storm. "There are cars on top of houses, there are dead people lying in the street, it is total chaos," said local resident Maria del

Rosario Ramirez, quoted by Mexican newspaper La Jornada. The tornado only lasted a short moment but that was enough to devastate a community. It struck at a busy time in the morning - people were driving or taking public transport to work. Cars were catapulted towards buildings, roofs ripped off and many vehicles left upended. Residents of Ciudad Acuna are used to hearing about this sort of thing north of the border in Texas, not experiencing this firsthand. The infrastructure clearly wasn't strong enough to stand up to the impact - the army is helping to search for missing people and neighbouring states have also said they will lend a hand in the rescue effort.

and foreign targets despite Kabul's repeated overtures to the Taliban to reopen peace talks. Taliban militants raided several police outposts in Naw Zad district in the restive opium-rich province of Helmand late on Monday. "Around 16 security forces have been killed in Taliban attacks in Naw Zad district," provincial council chief Karim Atal told AFP. In neighbouring Kandahar insurgents stormed the dormitory of a teacher training school late Monday, triggering a 16-hour gunbattle with Afghan forces.

"The police were able to evacuate the residence and in the fighting one woman was killed and six police were wounded," said provincial police spokesperson Zai Durani. Another militant attack in Waza Khwa district in the southeastern province of Paktika left at least eight police dead and ten wounded late on Monday. "A large group of Taliban attacked a police post. The police fought bravely but they were overpowered by the militants," said deputy provincial governor Attaullah Fazly.

Arabia on Tuesday carried out its 88th execution so far this year, surpassing the total for all of 2014 despite activists' concerns that trials are not conducted fairly. The interior ministry identified the latest to be put to death as Saudi nationals Awad al-Rowaili and Lafi al-Shammary, who were convicted of smuggling amphetamines. They were executed in the northern region of Jawf, the ministry said in statements carried by the official Saudi Press Agency. Another Saudi, Mohammed al-Shihri, was separately put to death in the southwestern region of Asir for murder. The conservative Islamic kingdom executed 87 people in 2014, according to an AFP tally. Those beheaded this year include Siti Zainab, an Indonesian domestic worker convicted of murder despite concerns about her mental health, according to the Indonesian newspaper Kompas. Jakarta summoned Riyadh's ambassador over her case, a rare diplomatic incident linked to Saudi Arabia's executions, around half of which involve foreigners. Also among this year's dead are at least eight Yemenis, 10 Pakistanis, Syrians, Jordanians, and individuals from Myanmar, the Philippines, India, Chad, Eritrea and Sudan. Saudi Arabia ranked among the world's top five executioners in 2014, according to Amnesty. Under the kingdom's strict version of Islamic sharia law, drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death. Executions are carried out in public, mostly by chopping off the condemned person's head with a sword. A surge in executions began towards the end of the reign of King Abdullah, who died on 23 January, but accelerated this year under his successor King Salman, in what Amnesty International has called an unprecedented "macabre spike".

Is Nigeria Police Force beyond redemption?

I

Emmanuel Onwubiko

n what may signal an appreciable state of trust in the capacity of Mr. Solomon Arase to steer the decadent and near-moribund Nigeria Police Force out of dysfuntionality and operational paralysis, the President and Commander-in-Chief made a historic confirmation of the appointment to the substantive post of the Inspector General of Police. For the first time in many decades, the new Inspector General of Police got the shortest probation before confirmation. Observers have remarkably affirmed that the decision of President Jonathan to so rapidly confirm the appointment of this detective is also an affirmation of confidence that may be for the first time in many years this rotten Nigeria Police Force may witness surgical overhaul. It is the general expectation of those genuinely seeking to see an effective and professionally sound policing force that the incoming Muhammadu Buhari administration will allow this newly picked police chief to settle down. Arase has already hit the ground running with many groundbreaking policy decisions one of which is the operational directive that all roadblocks should immedi-

ately be dismantled across Nigeria. Roadblocks as is so well notoriously known are the centres for extortion of road users. Many innocent lives have been lost at many of these road blocks and in the recent past commercial drivers unwilling to part with N50 to bribe these satanically corrupt police operatives have had to pay with their lives. The satanic phenomenon of illegal police road blocks for illicit extortion of drivers is almost as old as Nigeria to such an extent that more than thirty years ago, the irrepressible Fela Anikulapo Kuti released a song in which he sang about the evils of police road blocks. So defeating this evil of illegal roadblock is as tough as trashing the Islamic State rebels (ISIS) in Iraq. However, it is still possible if the resolve is strong and the footsoldiers to be deployed by the new police boss made to operate professionally and ethically. Those who would enforce this new sets of rules must themselves like Ceaser’s wife live above board. To demonstrate his determination to bring to an end this disturbing menace of criminal roadblocks, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has reportedly deployed 16 teams across the geo-political zones in the country to enforce the ban. The police Chief

made the disclosure at the State Police Command in Ikeja, Lagos State during his maiden visit. Also, he took time to address the media on a number of thematic areas that will constitute the hallmarks of his polic, amongst which is his determination to promote and protect the human rights of all citizens. On the issue of road blocks one of which necessitated the dismissal of the immediate past IGP (Mr Suleiman Abba), Arase, who described the road blocks as point of corruption and nuisance to the public, threatened to deal with his subordinates in whose domains road blocks are found. He specifically stressed that commissioners of police will henceforth be held accountable should their areas of operational jurisdiction be continuously used as illegal roadblocks’ friendly zones. This approach for once has reinforced the clarion call that public officers must be held responsible and sanctioned appropriately for apparent breach of ethical codes even by their subordinates. Erstwhile military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida pejoratively stated: “leaders can only delegate functions but can’t delegate responsibility “. To assuage apprehension in some quarters that his directive that road blocks be dismantled could be

misread to mean that police anti – crime patrols are delegitimised IGP Arase however assured Nigerians that motorised patrols will be introduced in places where road blocks have been removed, without inconveniences to the public. Another aspect of gross indiscipline that ought to be confronted frontally is the deployment of armed police guards to protect persons some of whom are even people of questionable sources of livelihood. It’s a notorious fact that police divisional heads now have standardised service charges for renting out police escorts to all manner of persons including foreigners some of who are not legally resident in the country. For instance those who travel yearly to the South East of Nigeria for the yuletide are usually bombarded by all kinds of sirens blaring indiscriminately by all manner of police escorts teams who have returned alongside many ordinary persons but who somehow managed to amass wealth either legitimately or otherwise. Road accidents are caused and many innocent persons are maimed and made to lose their basic human dignity just because someone is passing by with a large retinue of armed police operatives who in the first instance are serviced by the taxpayers.

to slaughter the perceived criminals living among them. People welcomed the peace and security, not minding how it came about. Bakassi Boys and their counterparts have been outlawed by Nigerian government. Nevertheless, cases of burning, butchering, and lynching of perceived criminals still abound. Being predominantly Christians and Muslims, we profess religions that preach and value peace, justice, and humanity. Setting a human being on fire and gleefully watching him burn is very different from the values our religions claim to uphold. Our consciences ought to rebel against this lack of humanity. The proclivity to violence, which has become rife in Nigeria, should be a cause for concern to every decent person. Nigerians drive violently, move violently, communicate violently, and even pray violently. One is at a loss as to when this attitude of violence crept into the Nigerian consciousness. Was it because of the long years of military rule? In Nigeria, the problem is not that violence exists, the problem is that it is exulted, acclaimed, and extolled as a virtue. That is why a person would come out and threaten to make the country ungovernable for

the president and some people from some quarters would hail him as a hero. Soldiers are respected in Nigeria, not because they defend the people, but because they can shoot them at the slightest provocation. This attitude of violence gave rise to Boko Haram. In Nigeria, politeness is taken as weakness, kindness is taken as stupidity, and leniency is mistaken for naivety. You have to be rude and brash to show you are in charge. You have to speak and act violently to make people respect you. Our sense of violence seems to have affected our spirituality as well. Many a Christian prays to God the “consuming fire”; if you do not shout “Holy Ghost, Fire!” you have not gotten to the root of prayer. We scream “back to sender” and “God punish you” at the least provocation, while we overlook the “Lamb of God”, the “Prince of Peace”, the Christ who prayed for sinners, the still small voice who visited Elijah in the desert cave, and the Holy Spirit who came in the form of a dove. Mystics who call us back to this form of Christianity are derided as heretics. With the notion of a violent God, many Nigerians exhibit violence in all their dealings.

Why are we so violent?

N Fr. George Okoro

igerians claim to be the most religious people on earth. As well, we take pride in our cultures and traditions and always refer to them especially when faced with what we term Western immoral influences and impositions. The latest was the issue of gay rights, which we accused David Cameron of Britain and Barack Obama of the United States of trying to import into Africa. Nigerians did not try to hide their aversions and indignations towards both homosexual unions and their advocates. Granted, gay union is not part of us; how about violence? How about burning perceived criminals? How about the recurring incidents of manhandling of fellow citizens by law enforcement agents? Are these parts of our cultures? When and why did Nigerians descend to the animalistic level of burning their fellow human beings alive? In November 2012, four students of the University of Port Harcourt were badly beaten and burnt alive by the residents of Aluu. On Sunday July 28 2013, two final year students of the University of Benin were beat-

en to death and their bodies burnt in a Badagry Lagos neighbourhood. Many of the people who engaged in this dastardly act went to Church on that day, while many others were observing the Ramadan fast. One argument in favour of jungle justice is that the Nigerian justice system has failed the masses. Many a time, people catch thieves, turn them over to the police, only to see the thieves released or ‘break jail’ and return to haunt those who apprehended them. As a result, the people resort to meting out instant justice. This gave rise to the popular (or notorious depending on your point of view) Bakassi Vigilante Group in the South East. For years, people of the South East had looked up to the Nigeria Police to protect them from the so-called Mafia, but the police looked the other way. A day came when the people felt they could no longer take it from these miscreants: they rose as one body and descended hard on them. They did not bother turning them over to the police or charging them to court; it was a case of identifies the criminal, catch and kills him. This method proved effective, given that many of these criminals left Aba and the city knew peace for a while. Many cities took the cue and began

ACI reviews Lagos airport infrastructure, operational procedures Chukwuemeke Iwelunmo As part of efforts to enhance safety at airports in the country, Airport Council International (ACI’s) Airport Excellence (APEX) in safety programme has reviewed the gap analysis of airport’ infrastructure and operational procedures at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos. The programme, according to the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Saleh Dunoma is an initiative of ACI and that it was aimed at enhancing the level of safety at airports across the world. “The APEX in safety programme is essentially a safety review – gap analysis of airports’ infrastructure and operational procedures benchmarked against International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standard and recommended practices.” Dunoma said The managing director listed some of the activities during the programme to include an on-site assessment of the air-

port’s safety programmes in order to ascertain the compliance level with international best practices, identification of gaps as well as drawing up an action and implementation plan for the airport to address all vulnerabilities. He added that the team’s safety search light was beamed on some aspects of MMA such as its aerodrome physical characteristics, safety management system, emergency wild life hazard management, night and day operations amongst others. Dunoma stated that in addition to better service delivery, safer and improved passenger experience, the programme would go a long way towards enthroning a safety culture among the airport work force and stakeholders. The APEX in safety programme, the FAAN boss said was launched in September 2011 with a pilot safety review conducted in Lome, Togo and that since then, five other safety reviews have been conducted covering four regions, which include Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America.

Retiree advises civil servants to embrace farming Civil servants across the country, especially those working in the rural areas, have been advised to embrace farming to augment their monthly income. Mr Ogundoro Ajayi, a retiree, gave the advice in an interview he granted newsmen in Omuo, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti. Ajayi, who said that the monthly-meagre salaries earned by civil servants could ``hardly be sufficient for their needs’’, added that their involvement in farming would improve their living standards. ``Civil servants should come to terms with the reality because of the dwindling economy, which makes it difficult for some state governments to pay salaries regularly. ``We are blessed with fertile lands all over the country and we should thrive to liberate our-

selves from the bondage of hunger and poverty through cultivation of crops at subsistence level,’’ he said. Ajayi said that many civil servants in Ekiti were currently facing various hardships due to their over-dependent on salaries now that the state government had begun to owe them some months’ salaries. He advised both civil servants and pensioners to invest in farming, however little, during the current planting season. The retiree also appealed to the incoming administration to formulate agricultural policies that would encourage civil servants to go into farming. He cautioned some pensioners, who spend their monthly allowances on pool-betting and other gambling, to desist from them to avoid hunger, ill-health and untimely death development.’’

Fuel Scarcity may force stay at home, NLC leader warns

The Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union of Nigeria, RATTAWU, has advised the incoming administration of Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to ensure strict compliance with its campaign promises. Mr Dare Durosimi, the Chairman of Lagos State Council of RATTAWU, gave the advice in an interview with journalists in Lagos. He said that that Nigerians would support the new dispensation if it would listen to the voice of the people. According to him, the Buhari-

led government cannot afford to live below board as expectations of the electorate are high. ``The incoming government will be expected to live up to expectations of Nigerians as any attempt to derail from the expectations will not augur well with the masses. ``By electing the new government, the Nigerian public has entered into a social contract with the state the tenet of which must be adhered to. ``The assurances we are giving to the president-elect is that so far he listens to the voice of the people, we will work with him,’’ the unionist said. According to him, the princi-

ple of the common good should be the cardinal objective of the incoming administration because without the people, there will be no government. Durosimi advised that the new government should shun all steps that could dash the optimism Nigerians reposed on the `progressive’ administration. On salary increment, he said: ``as a union in Lagos, we are talking about reviewing our salary because ordinarily in Lagos State, the salary was due to be reviewed as at last year. ``We are looking up to the new administration to look into this as part of its human capital.

The candidate, accompanied on the tour by the candidate for Financial Secretary, Mr Adeleye Ajayi, said: ``unless we do this, the profession will suffer and would be relegated. ``There is need to have people

How to build a wall-shelf Building a shelf into a wall creates a temporary version of the niche. Built-ins have been used for centuries to create display vignettes, as well as for storage. One of the more modern examples of shelving built into walls is seen in the arts and craft style of architecture. You can create a modern, urban take on this architecture feature by building a shelf between the studs in a wall. Determine the location of the shelf. Choose location that is approximately eye level, just as you would pieces of artwork or other wall decoration. Find the two studs in an area in which you want to build the shelf. Use a stud finder. Studs are generally speaking, 16-24 inches parts. Mark the location of the studs. Outline the shape of the shelf in the wall. Use a drywall saw to

make a small hole in the centre of the outline. Look inside the holes to check electrical wirings or gas lines. If wiring or gas line are present decide if you want to hire a professional to move them or choose another location for your shelf. Use the drywall to carefully cut along the outline of the shelf. Cut the drywall between the two studs, leaving the drywall that cover the studs in place. Cut slowly to avoid cracking the surrounding drywall. Install crossbeams at the top and bottom of the opening, anchoring each crossbeam to opposing studs. The crossbeams should be the same materials as your studs. Use sheet metal screws for aluminum crossbeams. For wood, use 12D 3- ½ inch nails. Drive the screws or nails at a 45 degree angle, commonly referred to as toenail-

ing. The studs and crossbeams should be flush with the interior drywall; that is, the backside of the adjourning room makes the back of the shelf. The crossbeams make the top and bottom of your shelf. Cover the framework created by the studs and crossbeams with the drywall. Apply drywall to the exposed sides of the studs and cross beams. Finish your drywall using mud and tape to ensure no rough edges or gap show. Apply the drywall, then the mud and the tape angled edges of your opening, making sure to cover any gaps between existing drywalls and your new drywall. This creates the niche with the continuous flow from the wall into the shelf. Sand as needed. Paint the interior of your shelf with the quality primer. Add a coat of paint in the colour of your choice.

Nigeria’s urban green space unimpressive – Experts

Okechuku Okani Eminent Nigerian, Chief Kingsley Osakwe, German-chartered civil engineer, and commandant- General, Crisis Control Foundation (CRICOF); a registered Zero- Crisis- Tolerance leverage organisation based in Lagos with functional branches and chapters across the country, has picked holes in the current level of Nigeria’s urban green space development, which he described as unimpressive and non – eudemonic. He told Daily Times that he cannot conjecture why Nigerian cities and even minor urban areas exist in exclusion of enough trees and lawns, despite the lavish pump with which the United

Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has been clamoring for mass – planting of trees and lawns; total reforestation of the urban green … to checkmate the menace of the intensifying Global Warning and Climate Change. He reminisced that Port -Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital, once showered delights and celebrated as the Garden -city was dotted richly with shade, fruit and ornamental trees, lawns and flowers; but today, according to him, people welcome the habit of not planting trees in their premises, and instead they find joy in setting concretes and interlocking stones - a brokerage with class. Portharcort at the moment is short in position as a green city.

Osakwe also named Jos, the Plateau State capital, whose urban green space he said is commendable as a green city; but could not approve any other northern city. He said it is easy to find huge stretches of trees along the roads, while the interiors are bare of trees; and such places cannot qualify for green cities, he said. Mr. Lawrence Omiunu has been opportune to find himself in all the 36 state capitals of Nigeria and the FCT (Abuja) and ticked Calabar as the only city with impressive urban green space in the country. Omiunu is a quantity surveyor and managing partner of Bancost Associates (a quantity surveyor, project management

firm, based in Jibowu Yaba, Lagos), wonders why most cities in Nigeria lack greens in the heat of the world sweeping clarion-calls for global warming and climate change mitigation action. He thus questions the Nigerian masses on this matter, saying, “Are we ignorant about the on-going enlightenment programme by world-acclaimed environment- friendly organisations and concerned civil society, such as Tree-CARE, Green Revolution, Green Evolution, and Climate for Justice, The Hammarskjold Foundation, Nigerian Conservation Council, and Green Belt Action? Omiunu reasoned that if every house-owner in Nigeria planted a shade tree in his premises, or if every company had planted a tree within its premises, the

whole country will effortlessly transform into the unified green Nation, not just a green city. We should be talking of national green space unification rather. He enjoins every Nigerian to borrow a leaf from leafy cities like Calabar- the facile princeps of Nigeria’s commendable urban green space perfection. Daily Times recall that recently, UNEP`s Environment for Justice listed names of world green cities and no Nigerian city was included. The public also ought to be reminded of the imperativeness of mass tree-planting with words of Dr. Freeman Dyson (a world renowned physicist and environmentalist) which says “large scale planting of trees…could be a cheap means of soaking up excess carbon (iv) oxide from the atmosophere”.

LCCI expands sectorial trade promotion with ICT expo Charles Okonji

L-R: Deputy President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr.(Mrs) Nike Akande, representative of the Executive ViceChairman/CEO of Nigerian Communications Commission, Ms Funlola Akiode, President, Lagos Chamber, Alhaji Remi Bello and Council Member of the Chamber, Princess Sarah Sosan at the opening ceremony of the 2015 ICTEL Expo organised by the Chamber on Monday.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has expanded its scope in trade promotion with the hosting of the maiden Information Communication Technology Expo (ICTEL) 2015, to showcase ICT based business solutions and strengthen linkages between providers and consumers in the country. Nigeria has witnessed an ICT revolution in the business sector over the last one and a half decade with the granting of operating licenses to private sector investors to launch the digital mobile telephone networks. In the assessment of Alhaji Remi Bello, president, LCCI, the Nigerian internet services is currently experiencing a boom, which places the country as the fastest growing ICT country in Africa and one of the fastest growing ICT countries of the world. Bello who stated this at the opening ceremony of the 25th ICT EXPO, on Monday in La-

gos with the theme; Connecting Businesses, Creating Opportunities, noted that the size and potential of the technology market in Nigeria was phenomenal. He said; “Today, virtually all sectors rely on the ICT for all aspects of their operations. From the financial sector, where government now sells fertilizer through mobile phones to the consumer goods sector where online stores are now all over, ICT and telecommunications have become the backbone of businesses,” he said. Bello explained that as the foremost private sector body in Nigeria, the Lagos Chamber cannot but provide a credible platform such as the ICTEL Expo to advance the opportunities and linkages in the world of ICT. “We hope to make this event an annual one in order to build economic and commercial bridges across all subsectors and players in the ICT sector. We plan to continuously broaden the horizon and scope of the Expo over the coming years.

The Kaymu’s mobile app is meant to make online shopping accessible to even more people, with great features that allows sellers to list products and buyers to select from a wide variety of products at a glance. The app will also offer a wider

product assortment, fast and intuitive navigation, and easier buyer and seller account management. Kaymu’s Managing Director, Evangeline Wiles, said the app is adapted to fit the needs of the marketplace and provide an improved shopping experience for buyers and sellers via their mobile devices. According to her, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC’s) records has shown that the total number of active mo-

bile internet subscribers as at April 2014 was 65,813,890, while a 2013 report by McKinsey Global Institute indicated that 58 per cent of Nigerians living in cities have access to an internet-capable mobile phone, and urban Nigerians are more than twice as likely as the average African internet user to conduct transactions online. Wiles explained that “this boost has led to an m-commerce explosion in Africa, as the number of users who access the

internet via their phones is growing rapidly and leapfrogging traditional desktop use in Africa. “In addition to the growing market penetration of smartphone devices in Africa, Nigeria is said to be among the 10 fastest growing economies in the world, according to The Economist in 2013, The World Bank predicted that sub-Saharan marketplaces will expand by 5.1 per cent in 2014 and by 5.2 per cent in 2015”. Why food prices remain stable

Adeshina

ÏÏÏMany Nigerians have not stopped

to ask themselves why food prices have remained stable despite the devaluation of the naira. The naira now exchanges for about N200+ to a dollar, yet the price of rice, which used to be an imported Nigerian staple has remained stable, ditto for wheat and other imported food items. How come? The Agric minister, Dr Akinwunmi Adeshina, told the story in a lucid, poetic and romantic manner at the recently held Raw Materials Clusters Summit in Abuja. He said despite the changes in the value of the naira, food prices have remained relatively stable due to increased food production and the substantially reduced import bill. “Government launched the Growth Enhancement Support scheme to provide targeted support for seeds and fertilizers to 20 million farmers within four years…The production from these supports exceeded 21million metric tons of additional food,” he explained. The minister added that in rice, 24 large integrated private sector rice mills have sprung up with a total capacity of 800,000 metric tons. Said he: “The quality challenges of local rice have been overcome by these modern mills with products comparable to imported milled rice, Aliko Dangote

is investing $1billion in 450,000 ha of rice fields and five rice mills with combined capacity of 1million metric tons.” Another glad tiding was that of the successes recorded in the bid to reduce the huge wheat import bill of N654 billion ($4 billion) a year by partially replacing wheat in bread and confectionaries with High Quality Cassava Flour with the launch of 20% cassava bread by four large industrial bakeries and four master bakers in 2012; and which increased to eight industrial bakers and 40 master bakers in 2014. Nigeria’s two largest wheat millers, Honeywell and Flour Mills of Nigeria who together account for 70% of total flour milling capacity in Nigeria have launched commercial 10% HQCF composite flour. Need we say more? That is the good part of the story. The sad part is that no single Nigerian process equipment fabricator was involved in the installation of the 24 large scale rice mills. And the fabricators are not happy with the (turnkey?) arrangement the government had with the manufacturers. One of them swore that the initial arrangement was for the government to import only a few units for the fabricators to study and partake in their installations so that eventually there would be no need to import more units, rather the remaining units would be made locally. The minister probably didn’t really see the need for the involvement of the local fabricators and regarded it as a waste of time, something which could rob the Jonathan Administration of the well-deserved honour of being the government that took Nigeria from being a food importer to food exporter. But did the minister think of after-sales maintenance? Was there any solid arrangement to ensure that Nigerians would be able to handle the maintenance and repairs, just in case the mills break down? Or are we going to keep on importing expertise to do the repairs each time there is a need for such? Is there any arrangement at technology transfer from the manufacturers to Nigeria, such that Nigerians could manufacture the mills wholly in the nearest future? These questions earnestly beg for answers!

ÏÏÏPlease

TIMESSEARCH, what happened to the candidates who applied for the 2014/2015 Commonwealth Scholarship? What was the stand of the Ministry of Education in this regard? What steps did the federal government take to make sure the scheme was successful? Please I would want to know everything concerning this issue because it is of paramount interest to candidates like me who want to study abroad. Mr. Okegbemisola Okelola P.O. Box 4421, Aruwajoye, Abeokuta, Ogun State. At the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters Abuja, the enquiry of Mr. Okelola was taken up with one of the top officials of the ministry, who preferred anonymity. He told the TIMESSEARCH that 1,600 candidates applied for the 2014/2015 Commonwealth Scholarship. It was revealed that the Supervising Minister of Education at that time was Nyesom Wike, who made it known that the objective of the scholarship “is for returnees to make differences in a variety of fields, including the academia, government, private sector and international organisation.”

Can I still travel with old yellow card? Please help find out from the Federal Ministry of Health if one could still travel with the old yellow card since efforts to get the new one failed. I was terribly embarrassed by some health officials contacted over the issue that I was supposed to have obtained the new yellow card by now since, according to them, the Minister of Health, had since 2013 made the pronouncement of replacement of old yellow cards for travelers who intend to travel but yet to obtain the new yellow card. At this point therefore, I would be happy if the TIMESSEARCH could help find out more about the yellow card from the appropriate authority. Lastly, I would want to know when the Minister of Health actually made the pronouncement because I was not aware of the development until recently when I was to travel out of the country. Please educate me more on this issue to avoid further embarrassment. Mr. Hezekiah Molokwu P.O. Box 4410 Obulu-Ukwu, Delta State

Sarah ODEDE How far with the Commonwealth Scholarship? Wealth Scholarship as one of the largest and most prestigious, noting that the criteria set by the commission for that year (2013) include academic merit, quality of proposals, like impacts of candidate’s work on the development of their home country and good knowledge of national and international affairs. The official added that, “ The scheme has benefited about 27,500 candidates from Nigeria and other Commonwealth countries, although the Minster made a pronouncement that a CSFP alumni and evaluation of the programme will be put in place as the “annual report of this evaluation allows the commission to determine whether the objectives of the scheme are being met.” Over 1,600 Nigerians have applied for the 2014/2015 Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan, according to the Director of Federal Scholarship Board, during the opening ceremony of the selection interviews for the prospective awardees in Abuja

A top official at the Federal Ministry of Health Abuja was taken up on the enquiry of Mr. Hezekiah Molokwu. The official, who did not hesitate to comment on the enquiry, had this to say: “Am surprised at Mr. Molokwu’s enquiry because as far back as August 2013, the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, urged travelers who were still using the old yellow card to replace them with the new encoded ones. “In fact, the Minister made this pronouncement while addressing newsmen in Abuja that foreign countries had been informed not to recognise the old card by October 1 2013. We are now in 2015; so where has this enquirer been since then that he is now asking for such an enquiry”, the official queried. However, she said: “As at that time that the new cards were given, our jingle that time was “we are giving new cards now, please don’t accept any old card as a fresh person, if you get immunized today. “If you are vaccinated against yellow fever, demand for the yellow card, the new one. Now the question that time was what about those people who are vaccinated for whom their immunization is still current? According to the official, if the enquirer had brought the old card to the Ministry of Health, all he had to do was to go to the Department of Public Health, and it would be replaced for him. So, who embarrassed him as stated in his letter to the Press? she queried.

1937 Golden Gate Bridge opens San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, a stunning technological and artistic achievement, opened to the public after five years of construction. On opening day-”Pedestrian Day”--some 200,000 bridge walkers marvelled at the 4,200-foot-long suspension bridge, which spans the Golden Gate Strait at the entrance to San Francisco Bay and connects San Francisco and Marin County. On May 28, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to vehicular traffic. The concept of bridging the nearly mile-wide Golden Gate Strait was proposed as early as 1872, but it was not until the early 1920s that public opinion in San Francisco began to favour such an undertaking. In 1921, Cincinnati-born bridge engineer Joseph Strauss submitted a preliminary proposal: a combination suspension-cantilever that could be built for $27 million. Although unsightly compared with the final result, his design was affordable, and Strauss became the recognized

1943

leader of the effort to bridge the Golden Gate Strait. During the next few years, Strauss’ design evolved rapidly, thanks to the contributions of consulting engineer Leon S. Moisseiff, architect Irving F. Morrow, and others. Moisseiff ’s concept of a simple suspension bridge was accepted by Strauss, and Morrow, along with his wife, Gertrude, developed the Golden Gate Bridge’s elegant Art Deco design. Morrow would later help choose the bridge’s trademark colour: “international orange,” a brilliant vermilion color that resists rust and fading and suits the natural beauty of San Francisco and its picturesque sunsets. In 1929, Strauss was selected as chief engineer. To finance the bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District was formed in 1928, consisting of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Del Norte, and parts of Mendocino and Napa counties. These counties agreed to collectively take out a large bond, which would then be paid back through bridge tolls.

U.S. Olympian Louie Zamperiniâ; s plane goes down in the Pacific

On this day in 1943, a B-24 carrying U.S. airman and former Olympic runner Louis “Louie” Zamperini crashes into the Pacific Ocean. After surviving the crash, Zamperini floated on a raft in shark-infested waters for more than a month before being picked up by the Japanese and spending the next two years in a series of brutal prison camps. His story of survival was featured in the 2010 best-selling book “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand. Born in 1917 to Italian immigrants, Zamperini grew up in Torrance, California, where he was frequently in trouble with the law. As a teen, he channelled his energy into athletics and became a champion distance runner. At age 19, Zamperini competed for the United States at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. He ran the 5,000-meter race and finished in eighth place; however, his fast final lap caught the attention of Adolf Hitler, who

later asked to shake Zamperini’s hand. After the Olympics, he was a record-setting standout on the University of Southern California’s track team. In the fall of 1941, Zamperini enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was eventually stationed in Hawaii. In May 1943, he was serving as the bombardier on a B-24 that was searching for a missing plane when his own aircraft developed mechanical problems and went down in the Pacific. Of the 11 people onboard, only the 26-year-old Zamperini, along with the pilot and the tail gunner survived the initial crash. The three men stayed alive in their small raft by drinking rainwater and eating the occasional seabirds and fish they were able to catch, all while facing strafing from Japanese bombers and the ever-present threat of shark attacks. After a month at sea, Francis McNamara, the tail gunner, perished. On their 47th day in the raft, Zamperini and fellow

survivor Russell Allen Phillips, having drifted some 2,000 miles since the crash, were picked up by Japanese sailors. For more than two years, the two men were held in a series of prison camps, where they were repeatedly beaten and starved. As an ex-Olympian, Zamperini was considered a propaganda tool by the Japanese and saved from execution; at the same time, however, he was singled out for particularly vicious forms of torture. The defiant American managed to survive and was released after the war ended in 1945. Back home in California, Zamperini drank heavily and was haunted by his experiences in captivity. Then, after being inspired by evangelist Billy Graham to convert to Christianity in 1949, Zamperini went on to become an inspirational speaker, forgive his captors and publish an autobiography, “Devil at my Heels.”

British evacuation of Dunkirk turns savage as Germans commit atrocity

On this day in 1940, units from Germany’s SS Death’s Head division battled British troops just 50 miles from the port at Dunkirk, in northern France, as Britain’s Expeditionary Force continues to fight to evacuate France. After holding off an SS company until their ammo was spent, 99 Royal Norfolk Regiment soldiers retreated to a farmhouse in the village of Paradis, just 50 miles from the Dunkirk port. Ships waited there to carry home the British Expeditionary Force, which had been fighting alongside the French in its defensive war against the German invaders. Agreeing to surrender, the trapped regiment started to file out of the farmhouse, waving a white flag tied to a bayonet. They were met by German machinegun fire. They tried again and the British regiment was ordered by an English-speaking German officer to an open field where they were searched and divested of every-

thing from gas masks to cigarettes. They were then marched into a pit where machine guns had been placed in fixed positions. The German order came: “Fire!” Those Brits who survived the machine-gun fire were either stabbed to death with bayonets or shot dead with pistols. Of the 99 members of the regiment, only two survived, both privates: Albert Pooley and William O’Callaghan. They lay among the dead until dark, then, in the middle of a rainstorm, they crawled to a farmhouse, where their wounds were tended. With nowhere else to go, they surrendered again to the Germans, who made them POWs. Pooley’s leg was so badly wounded he was repatriated to England in April 1943 in exchange for some wounded German soldiers. Upon his return to Britain, his story was not believed. Only when O’Callaghan returned home and verified the story was a formal investigation made.

Briefing newsmen, in Abakaliki, after the State Executive Council meeting, a top member of the party, Mr. Nwo Basi, condemned the recent crisis in the party, which, he said, led to the solidarity rally in support of the President –elect, Muhammadu Buhari by some “disgruntled elements” in the party with the Labour Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance and that it was a plot to create parallel state working committees. He noted with dismay that Onu did not do anything to add value to the progress or the electoral

Ă?Ă?Ă? Eight witnesses are to

testify in the ongoing N150 billion libel suit, filed by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, against Daar Communications, owners of African Independent Television (AIT). Prominent among the witnesses is the Chairman of the company, High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi and seven others. Others are Namure Joy Edoimioya, Chief Medan Tenke, Ajibola Adewusi, Olumide Idowu, Chief Stanley Odidi, Engr. Nwabueze

Buhari campaigner apologises to Jonathan over role in poll Tom Garba Yola

Ă?Ă?Ă?The

Media Director for Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation in Adamawa State, Alhaji Uba Dan Arewa, has apologised to President Goodluck Jonathan for the role played by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, in the just concluded presidential election won by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). Uba revealed that the failure of President Goodluck Jonathan was as a result of selfish and ill advices given him by some Adamawa elites milling around him in the villa. Dan Arewa, in an apology letter written to President Jonathan and made available to newsmen in Yola, said that Jonathan would not have lost woefully if he had not yielded to the ill advice given to him by some senior citizens from Adamawa, who have wrong motives and kicked against anyone who might have good advises for him. He said that ousted Governor Murtala Nyako, had earlier warned President Goodluck Jonathan to be mindful of those people during the PDP crisis.

and Dr. Stanley Bassey. Tinubu instituted the suit against AIT before an Ikeja High Court for peddling false accusations about his personality in the documentary titled "Lion of Bourdilion". He claimed that the documentary was politically sponsored to tarnish his reputation in the eyes of the populace. An interlocutory injunction had earlier been granted on April 1 by Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe, restraining AIT from further airing the documentary, pending the determination of the suit. AIT had filed a counterclaim on Thursday denying

each and every allegation of facts as contained in the claimant's amended statement of claim. It stated that Tinubu (defendant) founded his entire claims on a non-existent ground or cause of action because contrary to his (Tinubu) claim, the documentary aired by its media outfit is not titled "The Lion of Bourdilon", but "Unmasking the Real Tinubu. AIT also claimed that the documentary, in its honest opinion, was not false and neither was aired out of malice to the person of the claimant, adding that as the fourth estate of the realm, it is empowered by Section

22 of the Constitution to at all times, hold those in government accountable and responsible to the people of Nigeria. AIT also averred it did not author the documentary but only aired it for a short period of time, the last being March 6, 2015, when it got wind that the defendant had filed a libel suit.

As a way to safeguard lives and property of the citizenry, the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has been urged, as a matter of urgent public importance, to overhaul the nation’s security apparatus and intensify effort in the fight against insurgency in the country when he take over mantle of leadership.

Hon. A.A. Jugulde (Gembu constituency), moved a motion while Hon. Rashida Ibrahim of Nguroje constituency seconded. The Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Joseph Albasu Kunini (Lau), in another development, moved a motion for the report to be considered at the plenary while Hon. A.A. Jugulde (Gembu), supported him. Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, Hon. Istifanus Haruna Gbana, who read only the recommendations accrued from their findings and observations, described the short title of the bill as, “The Taraba State Governor and Deputy Governor Pension’s Bill, 2015, while its long title was, “A Bill for a law to provide for pensions to former holders of the office of the Governor or Deputy Governor of Taraba State and for other matters connected therewith. Addressing a world press conference at the press centre, in Abakaliki, a former council chairman in Ebonyi State, Chief Marcellinus Nwokporo, described security as paramount to the development of the nation and expressed optimism that the incoming President will bring his experience to bare. He advised Buhari to avoid those that may mislead him so as to perform well in office, adding that Nigerians will not accept any excuse from him as all hope is on him to deliver the much needed change to the people. Nwokporo explained that PDP government was enmeshed into terrible corruption which caused the party woeful defeat.

Stakeholders laud upgrade of 4 colleges of education Entrance to one of the recently upgraded collleges of education

Sam Nzeh Stakeholders in the Education sector have lauded the upgrading of four colleges of Education in the country into universities of education by Federal Government, saying the action was long overdue. Recall that the Federal Executive Council last week approved the conversion of four Federal Colleges of Education to universities. The affected colleges of education include Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo State; Federal College of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State; Federal College of Education, Kano, Kano State and the Alvan Ikoku College of Education Owerri, Imo State. Commenting, former President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, on Monday commended the action but said the purpose for converting the colleges at this period might not be realised with a few days to the end of the current administration. ``I think the upgrading of these colleges of education into universities is in order, as we indeed need more access. ``But I think it is coming a bit

late for an administration that has just a few days to go. ``Such due cushion ought to have come earlier than now, so that the same government will be able to make budgetary allocations for its effective implementation. ``I do not want to believe that this development is to score some political point. ``Because we are all aware that this country had challenges of teacher production, and we do not seem to do anything about it so far. ``I would have thought that rather than keep establishing more universities at this point in time, all we need to do is seek means of improving on existing ones,’’ Awuzie said. The don said, however, that the conversion of the colleges to universities was in order, as it was going to remove pressure from other universities. He advised the government to seek means of making the teaching profession more glamorous. The university lecturer said that the public had poor perception of the profession because of the poor attention being given to teaching and the teachers. Awuzie said that for government to attract and encourage the youth to take to the teaching

profession, it must ensure that the right environment for teaching and learning was created in such universities. He said that the remuneration of the trainers of these teachers should also be reviewed upwardly, with up-to- date facilities put in place, to bring out the best in them. According to him, this will serve as a model to young Nigerians who aspire to become teachers, rather than allowing them to see it as avenue of obtaining certificates to seek for jobs. He said that converting more colleges to university status was not the ultimate. “Rather, attention should be paid to the challenges that come with the proliferation and the unwarranted bureaucracies”, he said. A former Minister of Education, Prof. Chinwe Obaji, also said that the development was in the right direction, adding that government must strive to match word with action. According to her, for such universities to match its status, government must ensure that the right tools were in place. ``Government must ensure that qualified and adequate management members of staff are on ground, to manage such

universities. ``We must also ensure that the Vice-Chancellors of the universities are also well qualified and are chosen on merit. ``There is also the need for us to also pay attention to the technology sector, by ensuring that technical education is taken seriously from the basic level, and encourage the children to be innovative,’’ she said. Mr. Samuel Akindele, a Lecturer at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, Lagos, said that the upgrading of the colleges to universities was laudable. Akindele said that the upgrade was understandable because the four colleges of education had been producing degree students while affiliated to other universities since the 90s. According to him, the pronouncement will further strengthen the dichotomy between the university, polytechnics and colleges of education. ``Unfortunately in Nigeria, we do not treasure the products of colleges of education like their university counterparts. ``And that is the dilemma we have in our education system today,’’ he said. Akindele, who was the National President, Colleges of Edu-

cation Academic Staff Union (COEASU) from 1996 to 2000, said that the union had laid bare this proposal. According to him, the colleges of education were demanding that they be licenced to award degree certificates. ``What we need is not the name; colleges of education should be treated as colleges of education and still produce degree students. ``But unfortunately, it is the name that is required in our country. ``If you go to Ghana, colleges of education produce degree students, likewise Western countries,’’ he said. Akindele said that colleges of education in the states had the wherewithal to produce degree students. ``In 1999, I was opportune to be at the Senate to present the statistics of the lecturers with PhD in the universities and in colleges of education. ``I got over 14 universities with lesser PhD holders than colleges of education. ``As at that time, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, had 62 PhD holders, Alvan Ikoku, Owerri, had 57 and Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, had 47 PhD holders.

Bogoro’s footprints at TETFUND Olumide Afolabi Education, without mincing words, is a major instrument for national development. It is a tool for eradicating illiteracy, preparing the youths, who are the future leaders of any nation, for future challenges as well as a potent means of broadening their horizon. The Federal Government of Nigeria, no doubt, must have taken these into serious consideration in basing the nation’s education policy, essentially, on the development of the individuals into a sound and effective citizens and the provision of equal educational opportunities for all citizens of the nation at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. The administration of former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, mindful of the reality of the situation, took proactive measures aimed at arresting the educational system upon assumption of office. In December 1990 the Federal Government constituted the Commission on the Review of Higher Education in Nigeria (the Gray Longe Commission) to review the post independence Nigerian Higher Education after Lord Ashby’s Commission of 1959. The Longe Commission recommended among others, the funding of higher education through earmarked tax to be borne by companies operating in Nigeria. An implementation committee, under the chairmanship of Professor Olu Akinkugbe, was constituted to implementation Gray Longe’s Commission report recommendations. An Agreement was signed between the Federal Government and ASUU on the 3rd September, 1992 on funding of universities. In January 1993, the Education Tax Act No7 of 1993 was promulgated alongside other education related Decrees. The Decree imposed a 2percent tax on the assessable profits of all companies in Nigeria. This was a home grown solution aimed at addressing issues of funding, rehabilitating decaying infrastructure, restoring the lost glory of education and confidence in the system as well as consolidating the gains thereto; building capacity of teachers and lecturers; teacher development; development of prototype designs and so on. The Education Tax Act of No7 of 1993 mandated the Fund to operate as an Intervention Fund

to all levels of public education (Federal, State and Local). This mandate was faithfully discharged between 1999 to May 2011 when the ET Act was repealed and replaced by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act, due to lapses and challenges in operating the Education Trust Fund. The ETF was overburdened and overstretched and could only render palliative support to all levels of public educational institutions in Nigeria with duplication of functions and mandate of other Agencies set up after the ETF, such as Universal Basic Education (UBE) and Millennium Development Goal (MDG) The decay, rot and dilapidation of facility issues in the tertiary education continued to be irritating as Funds were only thinly spread. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) was originally established as Education Trust Fund (ETF) by the Act No 7 of 1993 as amended by Act No 40 of 1998 (now repealed and replaced with Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act 2011). It is an intervention agency set up to provide supplementary support to all level of public tertiary institutions with the main objective of using funding alongside project management for the rehabilitation, restoration and consolidation of Tertiary Education in Nigeria. The main source of income available to the Fund is the two percent education tax paid from the assessable profit of companies registered in Nigeria. The Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) assesses collects the tax on behalf of the Fund. The funds are disbursed for the general improvement of education in federal and state tertiary educations specifically for the provision or maintenance of essential physical infrastructure for teaching and learning, institutional material and equipment, research and publications, academic staff training and development and any other need which, in the opinion of the Board of Trustees, is critical and essential for the improvement and maintenance of standards in the higher educational institutions The Fund is managed by an eleven (11) member Board of Trustees with members drawn from the six geo-political zones of the country as well as representative of the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Min-

Bogoro

istry of Finance and the Federal Inland Revenue Services. The Board of Trustees has the following responsibilities as stated in the Act: Monitoring and ensure collection of Tax by the Federal Inland Revenue Services and ensure transfer to the Fund Manage and disburse the Tax Liaise with appropriate ministries and bodies responsible for collection or safe keeping of the Tax Receive request and approve admit table projects after due consideration Endure disbursement to various public tertiary education institutions in Nigeria Monitor and evaluate execution of projects Invest funds in appropriate and safe securities. Update the Federal Government on its activities and progress through annual audited reports among the states of the Federation in case of regular intervention Review progress and suggest improvement within the provisions of the Act Do such other things that are necessary or incidental to the objective of the Fund under these Acts or as may be assigned by the Federal Government Make any issue guidelines, from time to time, to all beneficiaries on disbursement of monies from the Fund on the use of monies received from the Fund Therefore, when President Goodluck Jonathan came into power in 2011, his pledged transformation agenda was aimed and directed consciously by con-

scientious leadership at repositioning our great country on the path of enduring, sustained economic posterity, built on an independent but dependable self reliant economy. It was in the light of this that the appointment of Professor Suleiman Elias Saidu Bogoro as Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND was wholesomely seen as another bold step in the right direction. Indeed, it was a case of a round peg in a round hole. Bogoro, a renowned Professor of Animal Science, no doubt, is known universally as an intellectual giant. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, under Bogoro, has become an international brand with a number of African countries now visiting Nigeria to come study this organization and replicated same in their respective countries. TETFund has now been re-focused and given a new direction by its new helmsman, Professor Suleiman Bogoro. TETFund, under the Prof Bogoro, has now been given the required lease of life necessary to address the multiple challenges facing the nation’s tertiary education sector. For instance, since April 2014, when President Jonathan approved his appointment, Professor Bogoro has proved to be the tonic needed to lift the bars of performance in this strategic agency. TETFund Board of Trustees (TETFund-BOT) had approved

(Pics: Tonto Dike at the 5th edition of the summit)

a five-year vision for the fund to improve academic content and quality to achieve excellence. This was revealed by Professor Bogoro at a one-day Joint TETFund/Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) interactive forum at the University of Lagos, in 2014. Indeed, the leadership at TETFUND is initiating new developmental concepts and strengthening existing ones. The fulcrum of the new direction is the comprehensive transformation of the public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education with a view to making them more transparent in project and programme initiation and execution, for the purpose of achieving the transformation that President Jonathan dreamt of at the beginning of his administration. Bogoro, in one of his earliest interviews upon assumption of office as the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, indicated that he intends to capitalise on the political will of the President to change the face of tertiary education while positively developing a sub-sector that was hitherto neglected. He was of the view that the fact that President Jonathan reformed TETFUND from an organization that dwelt solely on infrastructural development between 1993 and 2011, to one that has a broader focus on development of key aspects of tertiary education speaks volumes, his administration will not hesitate to concentrate on the new concepts and programmes that would enhance quality teaching and learning in public tertiary institutions across the country. This, he reasoned, would ultimately help the Federal Government to achieve its goal of improving access to quality tertiary education amongst the Nigerian populace. In the words of the Bauchi State-born Bogoro, “TETFUND has effectively re-focused to revive tertiary education in Nigeria. We have innovated programmes and projects targeted at improving facilities and academic staff for the growth desired by all Nigerians. “We do not want to expand our frontiers beyond what our law says and we do not want to encroach on the functions of the regulatory agencies. Nigerians should expect improved service from TETFUND, hinged on transparency and accountability”, he said.

Govt. should upgrade all Colleges of Education to degree awarding status — Prof. Bamgbose Professor Olufemi Bamgbose is a renowned educationist, who being a teacher that produces teachers, has not only carved niche for himself in the sector but also known as a politician of repute, having contested the last gubernatorial election in Ogun State. The Professor of Education Management and also Provost, Yewa Central College of Education, YCCE, in this interview with Tunde Atobatele in Abeokuta, bares his mind on sundry issues that relate to the Education sector in the country. Excerpts: What would you refer to as the major challenges in the nation’s Education sector? First, as an educationist, I view the problems in the education sector as mainly man-made, which can be traced to leadership apathy. The challenges are in two fold, namely, quality and access. The quality of teachers is majorly lagging in the sector and the resultant effect of this menace is what we are experiencing nowadays. Look, even during the days that students were gathered under the tree but provided with highly trained teachers, the students were largely better-off and highly productive in the society. The roles of teachers in the learning environment are enormous that a responsible government will not

trivialize. That’s the more reason we often clamour for teachers improved remuneration so as to further crave for their commitment to the job. If the governments would priotise teachers’ remuneration, I am most confident that it will bring a lot of growth to the education sector. In addition to this is the need for the government to pay great attention to the institutes that mould the teachers, the Colleges of Education. Colleges of Education across the country must be made thorough by regular government supervisions lest the vision become derailed. A pointer about this is the regular calls on the government to give the Colleges of Education the authority to be awarding degrees. Since teachers are

Prof. Bamgbose

expected to possess an all-round knowledge in all subjects while in class, it will not be out of tune, if the colleges can be empowered and upgraded to degree awarding colleges of Education. At this juncture, let me make this as my humble submission as a means of agenda setting for the incoming administration in the education sector. Given the fact that a few number of the Colleges of Education was recently upgraded, I strongly feel that the authorisation must be given to all, both the private and government owned, which must be streamlined by a government

Educationists advocate use of music in teaching subjects Some educationists in Lagos have advocated for the use of music in teaching to enhance the students understanding of subjects they perceived to be difficult. They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday that music was relevant in the educational development of children as they things learnt through music were hardly forgotten. The educationists held that music was a necessity that couldn’t be circumvented in teaching children other subjects and music itself. The teachers spoke against the backdrop of the dearth of music teachers and the non-teaching of music as a core subject in most schools in the country.

Mr. Sunday Babalola, a lecturer at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin, Lagos State, told NAN that music helped children to relax their brain and nerves and prepared them to learn. Babalola said that music was embedded into all the subjects in primary schools in ways that make children to understand the topics easily. ``Take for instance, in mathematics, days of the week are turned into music, in Geography, rivers in Africa are turned into music and it is so in many other subjects. ``By so doing, children will definitely remember when asked during exams about such things,’’ he

said. According to the lecturer, music started from cradle to death; the first sound made by a child in terms of cry could be regarded as music. ``This is so because the cry of a new born child is a welcome sound to the ear and enriches the soul,’’ he said. Babalola said that as the child grew, the communication with him or her is mostly done through music. Contributing, the Head Teacher of Oakwood Montessori School, Surulere, Mrs Ifeyinwa Oguadinma, said that music helped children having issues with learning to learn gradually. Oguadinma told NAN that mu-

body, to verify those that so qualified, in terms of personnel and infrastructure. After all, the world over practices this hence there are very many colleges of education abroad that award first and second degrees and yet, they are referred to as colleges. Your clamour for the upgrade of colleges of Education seems to give credence to the government position that degree must be made the least teaching qualification in Nigeria; then should NCE be abrogated? No, never. The NCE must not be abolished the way the govern-

sic helped a child to learn better and unfolded the child’s potential. She said that music was a necessity in the education of a child because whatever a child was taught through music could never be forgotten. ``We have discovered that children who had issues in their learning unfolded gradually due to regular use of music in the class. ``That is why we stress the need to teach music in schools,’’ she said. Also speaking, the school’s Administrator, Mr Mark Ahamefune, said that a child was not balanced if he was not able to do what other kids could do. ``Aside academic excellence, we are looking at building an allround child. ``Music helps children to have fun as they learn, every child should be able to play an instrument whatever it is,’’ he said.

ment did to the Teachers Training Colleges, TTC. Let the NCE be the foundation for the teachers institute and then, for the desiring ones, be given the privilege to further their education to degree level at the same college. And about the degree awarding status, particularly for the government -approved private colleges of education, I can authoritatively say that the bill is lying on the floor of the National Assembly now. If that is done, we shall both live to see the positive changes in the sector, most especially, in the quality of the teachers that will be produced. Sir, you talked about access to education… Cuts in…. Yes, the government must as a matter of duty, provide an un-obstructed access to qualitative education in Nigeria. There must be a fine-tuning in the bureaucracy of getting admitted for higher studies. That’s why at our college of Education, the Yewa Central College of Education, YCCE, being a private college; we ensure unfettered information assess to the members of the public that desire to know about studying at our place. As I speak, YCCE remains the only private college that collaborates with the Nigeria Prison Service, Ogun State in the area of taking basic education to the inmates. In the last five years, we routinely assign teachers to visit and teach the inmates. Part of our vision is to raise teachers that will be upright and independent to become employers of labour in their own right. In addition to the fact that we develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills in our students, we also place emphasis on the character of these would-be teachers, which is very key.

Students organise mock PR campaign Hammed Opeyemi Unilorin As part of the criteria in understanding the Public Relation course outline, 300 level students of the Department of Mass Communication, Library and Information Science of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, staged a hypothetical public relation programme to exhibit their understanding of the practical aspect of PR. The students were grouped into two, with each group expected to implement a planned action that is meant to solve a hypothetical problem using a named company as a case study. The identified

problem is to be solved using PR strategies. The directive and order followed a Motion on Notice brought by counsel to APC, with the National Assembly since 2002, with its conception from a nationwide workshop in 2001. Speaking at a joint media parley in Abuja, the coalition, including Society for Women Advocate (WRAPA) and LACVAW working group and others, said that the victory is for Nigerians, who in the past suffered marriage torture, genital mutilation, forceful marriage, denial of marital rights, which has become a reality with the assent of the bill by the outgoing President. According to Hajia Saidatu Mahdi, of WRAPA, the new law, seek to eliminate all kinds of violence both private and public life.

Chief Charles UwensuyiEdosomwan (SAN). According to Edosomwan, the motion, dated May 19, 2015, was brought pursuant to Section 285 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), Section 151 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2010, paragraph 47 (1) (2) and (3) of the first schedule to the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) and under the inherent powers of the tribunal. In the motion, the APC is praying the tribunal to grant the application. Jimi Agbaje, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had petitioned the tribunal, challenging the declaration of Akinwunmi

Ambode of the APC as the winner of the April 11, 2015 gubernatorial election, alleging that he observed some irregularities during the election, which is in contravention of the provisions of the INEC's approved guidelines. Respondents in the suit include Ambode, APC, and the Lagos State INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner. Justice Sirajo had on May 5, 2015 granted Agbaje leave to inspect all polling documents and devices used in the conduct of the election. He also ordered INEC to provide Certified True Copies of all polling documents, including printed data in each polling unit, from the card reader machines.

UNN students sack electricity company Moses Oyediran Enugu

ÏÏÏFew days after the Al-

lied Business Community in Nsukka, Enugu State, accused Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) of imposing overbloated bill on them, students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), on Tuesday, took over the premises of the electricity company. Daily Times learnt that the angry students were protesting the several days of power black-out, which has also made water supply difficult.

The hundreds of students, residing off-campus, at the Odenigwe area of Nsukka, accused the EEDC of forcing them to buy a transformer, only to use same in giving power to some prominent and business outfits in the town. The spokesman of the students, Mr. Hope Vikki, disclosed that in 2010, they contributed N750 per room to buy new transformer, lamenting that few months later, corrupt EEDC officials, connected a baking factory and some other influential people living at the University

Market road with light, without making any contribution to the transformer. “EEDC forced us to contribute money for the transformer, yet without our permission, they connected Ankis bread factory and people living in University market road. “As if that was not enough, EEDC now gives us light for one day and gives Ankis and University Market Road for four days”, he said. Vikki further stated that the students decided to carry out the protest because they could no longer

bear the injustice. “EDDC is treating us like this because we are students; the corrupt EEDC officials should disconnect Ankis and University Market from that transformer they forced us to buy, or else, we will not allow them gain access into the transformer”, he vowed. The spokesman also lamented the outrageous monthly bill they receive from the EEDC, saying that, “the highest we have light is twice in a week but at the end of the month, EEDC will give us outrageous bills”

Aremu stirs up hornet’s nest

Yinka Olujimi

ÎÎÎ Repeat after me, last

eight years Yes grandpa, last eight years. Nigeria has been mismanaged in the last eight years Yes sir, Nigeria has been badly mismanaged by the PDP since 1999 Who told you that? I said in the last eight years. Say it again, last eight years Okay granny, last eight years, last eight years, last eight… Good. Now, say Nigeria has been mismanaged in the last eight years. Okay gran. Nigeria has been mismanaged by the PDP in the last 16 years. Ha! What kind of education are they giving to our

kids these days? You mean you can’t understand a simple sentence? I am not talking about the last 16 years. Nigerians must be told to overlook my eight years and concentrate on the succeeding eight years. I am the navigator, remember? I am now squeaky clean. It is only that Otuoke mistake of the last six years that we have to focus on. Thankfully, the one who was in charge for the first two years after me is no more, so he cannot fault me. The mistake man of six years is too dazed and can also not respond. So, all we need to focus on now is to make Nigerians stop talking about my own eight years. Did you hear that? Focus on the last eight years. Okay grandpa. It is now understood. Fully. So, say it: Nigeria has been badly managed in the last eight years. Hmmmm. I can’t understand o, granny. Can you point at one of the areas of the last eight years where mismanagement took place. Just one. Olodo lomode yi o (this boy is a dullard). You are just like your mother. So, you mean I need to point

at the areas where the foolish boy failed Nigerians? The boy whom the Almighty gave me the grace to elevate to the post of President, but chose to disrespect me? I am sorry, granny, but I need you to give me specifics. Now, tell me, since you and your mother arrived in the country, have you had fuel to move around the town? Has fuel scarcity not been a big problem in Nigeria, the world’s sixth largest producer! Grandpa, you have always encouraged us to tell the truth, no matter what. So, I must tell you why I have difficulty separating eight from 16. Yees, I have always asked you to tell the truth at all times. Truth elevates a nation. We must say things as they are. If don’t do that, you will not be a true born of the Aremu family. So, I must say the truth? Yes, say it. Tell me the truth. Grandpa, don’t let me talk o. Very soon now, you will be calling me idiot and you will be abusing my mummy. By the way, it is idiot, not eediot. Hehehehe! See this

small boy. Aye ma ti dorikodo o (the world has turned upside down). You mean I shouldn’t call you eediot, even when you are one? Okay, speak on. Tell me your mind. Grandpa, you were in office for eight years. How come the world’s sixth largest producer of crude oil is still importing petroleum? Why should anybody body blame the last eight years and leave out the preceding eight years? How come your party did not add one refinery, just one refinery whether as private of as public, in the last 16 years? Is that the truth you want to tell me? Eediot. Granpa! I asked a simple question. How can I separate eight from 16 years if you were in office in eight of the 16 years, somebody spent two, and another six. Who should be held responsible for the massive importation of fuel? Orisirisi! It is me you are talking to like that, right? Grandpa, should I go back to sleep? You know I don’t like discussing Nigeria with you. I would not be debating this if you had not asked me to be repeating a statement.

Well, that is why I like you. You are a trueborn Aremu. You will always tell the truth. You are my boy, my very good boy. Although you always behave like an eediot. It is idiot grandpa, not eediot, I have always told you. And, I am not an idiot. Okay o. Call it what you like. All I know is that you are one. I am surprised, grandpa that you didn’t talk about the grand failure of your combined administrations to end Nigeria’s power woes. You see yourself ? Ehn? I say, you see your life outside ( o ri aye e lode?) You want to say that you are not aware of all the giant steps I took in the power sector and that it is because my successors, who are not worthy of that title, elected not to see my power projects to completion? Grandpa! Your power projects? Like that first phase project in Papalanto which gulped billions of Naira but could not be used until the second phase comes on stream? The project that could not continue because it was sited in Ogun State but

the gas that would power it is in the Niger Delta? Don’t make me laugh o, grandpa. I will not respond to your foolishness again. It is not your fault. You would not be opening your stinking mouth to say those things to me if I had not tried to you use you as test for my next public address. I knew you would say this grandpa, but I must tell you the truth. Nigerians are asking questions to our hearing. If people can’t tell you the truth, we owe it a duty to you to tell you. They ask about the record of your performance on road. They point at the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. In fact, they talk about the road that leads to Ota Farm and the Sango bridge. They say that that bridge was completed by your immediate successor who spent only two years. They wonder why the road that leads to your own farm was in such a deplorable state after your eight years in office. I have told you, you are an eediot. Grandpa! It is idiot, not eediot. And I am not an idiot…

How did you come up with the name, Ibile Vogue? It used to be Culture Vogue but I felt it would be better if I translate it to my mother tongue. Ibile means culture. I deal with arts that speak volumes of our afro-cultural heritage and I wanted a name that would connect us to our roots.

Life&

T E A M

Was there anything about your growing up years that suggested that you would end up as a fashion designer? Yes, but somehow, parental influence affected me but I eventually found my way back. My mother wanted me to be a doctor, she forced me into it but I ended up with poor grades. When she saw my result, she had to change her mind

despite all the books she bought for me. I liked Fine Arts and was the best student in my set in secondary school. Thereafter, I went to Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo State and studied English History. I was just age 16. I later got a degree in English from Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy. I love to teach but I didn’t realize it in time. I am also a stylist who loves fashion. I went into banking, not because I loved the profession but because I loved the way bankers dress. I lost the job because I was always having shortages. I have always tell people that I goofed as a banker but excelled as an artist. During the June 1993, MKO crisis, while at home, I learnt a lot of things in fashion. I went to a fashion training school and got trained. I started making clothes at home and borrowed a machine from a friend who had one. I am naturally a good marketer, a good speaker and a good dresser so it was easy for me to get clients. I would make something good for myself and purposely wear it to occasions. People would see it and admire it and would ask that I make it for them. I have always charged high from the onset. I know I must give them value for their money and ever since I started, I have won several awards. What were some of the challenges you faced since you started out? Funding. I started this business not having anybody to fund it for me. I won’t even say that was the major

challenge because I was able to pull through with passion. A lot of people would tell you funding is usually the issue for them but I would say that my major challenge has been trying to get good hands that would work with me. You get people and train them and when they see they have become very good in their own eyes, they leave and you and you start to hire people and train them all over again. Another challenge is electricity which is killing our business. I have to buy fuel even during scarcity because I am not used to giving excuses to my customers and also because I must deliver on the date that I promised them, even if it means losing my profit, I like to meet up with deadlines. Another challenge is the fact that government and banks are not financing us and so, we are just loners. If you see any successful fashion label today, just know that the owner has fought several battles to be successful. Despite all, that I do my work very well. I still cut and I love doing that because I believe that is the most sensitive part of the construction process. Can you recall how you mobilized finance when you were to start up? I would say I got most things for free. My home and a borrowed machine. The thing I spent money on was just the threads and a big cutting table. I can remember I did thrift savings and collected N3, 000. That was how I started. Were you not bothered with Movie Correspondent Mutiat Alli m.alli@dailytimes.com.ng 08115557378

competition especially with a lot of established brands? I was not bothered but only mindful of them. I identified the fact that they were in existence and I needed to fight to take my place. I wanted to stand out in the industry and that was how I decided that I needed to carve a niche for myself with the Afropolitan concept. I have this natural thing in me as a sanguine, to always push for the best. I knew that a causal stroll won’t take me there. That is why I always like to get the best out of my students and staff. To what extent have you been able to sell your Afropolitan idea to Nigerians? You can see it already, it is everywhere. Everybody is now putting on Ankara. Thanks to former President Olusegun Obasanjo who always wears natives. He never wore suits. For me, that is the best thing to do because the whites won’t come here and wear agbada. I have never travelled out and worn complete English wears, even here in Nigeria. The last time I was in Europe, I found myself having to give out an adire bangle to a white woman. She is Dutch and she just kept admiring me and the compliment she payed me felt like I gave her more than a bangle. She came to visit me in Nigeria and bought a whole lot when she was going back. At another show we had in Malta, we sold all we took along and they are asking us to come again in October. For me, I can never wear anything 100 per cent English.

Really? You can ask people that know me in the industry. You cannot find me dead putting on 100 per cent western wears. I have been consistent with this for 10 years now. I do Asooke, Ankara, adire, anything cultural and African. How do we identify the brand of Ibile Vogue in a competitive market filled with almost everyone designing in local fabrics? I really don’t know how to differentiate it because true, a lot of people are using Ankara. I just know that mine is unique and people like it so much. Most of my designs are not so heavy and appear very comfortable. I know that people cannot catch me in complete native so I try to present myself as such. I repeat, you can never catch me dead in 100 per cent western wear. How profitable is this business? It is very profitable. Some designers would say it is very rough but if it is not profitable, we would have stopped doing it. Most people in the business are very educated now and they know that designers are intellectual properties. You are paying for their intellect. Fashion is very lucrative. It includes several accessories. You can even do belt alone and be a millionaire. Our culture is even encouraging us to make more money. Imagine the aso-ebi culture. You are sure that they will always bring it to you to sew. When you Continue on L7 Graphics Austine Agbovi a.agbovi@dailytimes.com.ng 07060402397

INTERVIEW

Why I cannot wear 100 per cent English wear Temitope Alade

Continues from L2 bring it to me, I will always buy even if I won’t attend your event. But I’m sure that one day, I will sew it and put it on to an event. As the National Secretary of FADAN, what role is the body playing to uplift the standards of fashion? FADAN is the only fashion body recognized by government. If the government is thinking anything fashion, it is FADAN. Also, FADAN is like an umbrella of protection for the rights of fashion designers in the country. The current president has done a whole lot; representing and negotiating with the government on our behalf. We are looking at having some of the things we have been pushing for from the new administration. What we really need now is a production hub. We also organize competitions for young designers to showcase their works. What is worth knowing about fashion that most don’t know? As a layman, you must understand your body and adorn it accordingly.

Just identify your signature style and stick to it. Don’t say because something is trendy then you put it on at all cost and at the end of the day, it might not suit you but rather make you vulnerable to the fashion police. Style is key and knowing what to wear, how to wear and when to wear it is important. If you are going to the beach, for instance, you do not say because you just bought a beautiful and expensive skirt-suit, you now put it on to the beach. When you dress appropriately for an event that is when I can say you are fashionable.

As a wife, mother, designer and teacher, how are you able to strike a balance without one side suffering? I will say it is the grace of God but I cannot but thank my husband who supports me immensely. I have been married to Engineer Alade for the past 16 years now and he is my best friend. He is so helpful and has always been there for me even though he has his own business. He runs a flexible work schedule and has the time to help me. He likes cooking and likes to do that at

times. Even when I am doing the cooking myself, he likes to stay with me. He has been very supportive, only that he didn’t take me serious initially because he thought I was just joking. It was when I got my first award that he declared his total support for me. Does he also help to sell your products to his friends and colleagues? Yes! Most of his colleagues are whites, mostly from South Africa and they wear my designs. Will you support any of your children who decides to tow the same path as yours? I already have one of my kids who has shown passion for it. He cuts and sews by himself and may likely be showcasing some of our products when next we go to Malta. He is 14 and he does the work very well. As a successful professional in the world of fashion, what message do you have for people who see you as a role model? I will say they should ensure they

go to school, even if they are very talented. I told you I was talented but I still went to school. That way, you can beat your chest and say that you are a qualified and licensed designer. You should also give it time. Fashion is not a lazy man’s job but it is not a difficult profession either. You have to just make it your life. What legacy would you like to leave behind? Well, I want to be remembered for grooming the youth in financial emancipation. I am an empowerment and professional coach too. I consult for NGOs too. I am still into fashion because of my passion for it. Also, a lot of my customers have been with me for over 10 years now and they have decided that they cannot let go. If I don’t want to do it, it would look as if one is felling too big. So, I still work for them and they pay well. What fond childhood memories can you readily recall? Growing up was fun for me because I grew in a university environment as my parents were staff of the university. As a child, I loved

arts and culture. Anytime, I went to the museum, I would get home and start sketching endlessly and that was how the flair for connecting back to my roots came from. My parents have friends abroad who would come back and are unable to speak their native languages again. Our culture is dying and imagine me in my mid forties not being able to speak my native language again, fluently. I am a Pan-Africanist and an unapologetic one at that.

OPINION

Buharinism and

alternatives to sports funding Olajide Fashikun

W

ith the quality of knowledge, expert analysis done by the Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc (NSDFI) led by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu (MFR), this country is not supposed to be in the wilderness of sports where we are presently sitting with no concerns as to how we can make a headway. Heavy media attention has always been wrongly focused on the suggestion that more government funding will be re-distributed to grassroots sport to make a difference. Many pro-government funds people had always called on the organised private sector to come and support sports development, but each time they make these musical calls, I only sit down and have a jolly good laugh. As a kicker, with a new government in place come May 29, they did not for one second mention sports during their campaigns, thus sports may be one of the key sectors to suffer. Therefore, it has become necessary to provide deeper analysis as to why increased government funding

will not solve many of the issues affecting sports development. The present situation raises the fundamental question: is grassroots funding the solution? It depends on how one defines ‘grassroots’, and what we are trying to solve and to whom the funding is distributed. It is worthy to note that every corporate planner is calculating the number of eyes that will follow their events. Thus, club systems in most nations that do well in sports thrive. This informs the concept that sponsorship is local and that we have more sponsors in the local communities than in the ‘nation’. I absolutely believe in more funding and resources to support grassroots sports development, however, the question is whether the current system is the best vehicle through which to achieve equitable outcomes for all parts of the communities? Facing a frugal Buhari government: Let us all admit that our nation today is in a massive mess. Corruption, stealing, thieving, pilfering, indiscipline, economic waste, social decadence and infrastructural decay are some of the major problems affecting sports

development in the country. If I were in Buhari’s shoes, will sports be a priority in such a setting? Certainly no. Must sports take a back seat as a result? Certainly no. What is sure is less government spending will undo sports development. Hence as a people I believe that more detailed questions need to be considered especially from the perspective of those responsible for the funding, namely, the National Sports Commission (NSC), the 36 State governments (that had already for decades cut down so drastically on sports funding) and Sporting Federations. The simple analysis will be, assuming we have all the monies needed, which organisations should get the money and the resources? Clubs, governing bodies, or others? Are clubs capable of using more money to change their processes to improve outcomes and if so what outcomes need to be changed? Are national (Federations) and state governing bodies (Associations), being so removed from, and often in conflict with the “grassroots”, best placed to use the funding wisely, and again, for

what outcome? Will their own financial pressures not continually influence their priorities away from grassroots? Are alternative organisations like NSDFI and Team Nigeria, successfully operating outside the sport system better placed to achieve outcomes? Again what outcomes? These organisations include, private sport providers operating in schools and communities, especially in mid to upper income areas and charitable and non-profit organisations bankrolling sporting events free in lower socio-economic areas. This is where our boost comes in! I have a good idea of the outcomes the Nigerian society wants from grassroots funding. This is given my years as a national team athlete (1979 to 1999), a sport journalist (1985 to date) and a sports development practitioner (2001 to date). These would include: More talented athletes moving into professional and semi- professional sporting ranks – this is basically how the Nigerian sport system is supposed to be set up to deliver. Improving the quality and level of participation in physical activity for all children and youths with the highest quality of coaching and equipment.

Improved personal, health and social development of the individual – outcomes that sport is espoused to achieve, though is not always the case. Improving community outcomes associated with inclusion, cohesion and building capacity of the children, youth and families. So we know what we want, but can the incoming government’s sports funding system achieve these goals? Can a frugal government of reconstruction that the Buhari’s is nursing have such funding for us? What relationship will the alternative sport system have with school sports development programmes that will enable all kids irrespective if their social status enjoy sport the same way other kids whose families have the financial and logistical means to engage with clubs? Will our communities, hungry and famished, ordinarily start forming clubs? What kinetic energy do we need to put in place to activate these yawning needs? Frankly, with Nigeria’s current archaic structure, government funding almost entirely distributed to Federations and its affiliate state bodies and ever-increasing funding needed to prop up the professional/elite part of sport; I believe the sport system in Nigeria is not equipped to achieve real outcomes for ‘grassroots’ considering the fact that ‘grassroots’ sports development are inclusive of all people in communities who do not and cannot access the club system.

INTERVIEW

Future Olympians will be discovered at Rojenny – Ezeonwuka Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka remember him? He is a member of Board of Trustees (BOT), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Proprietor of Rojenny Tourist Village Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. In this exclusive interview with ANDREW EKEJIUBA, the Ogirisi Igbo (Cleanser of Igbo race) as he is fondly called, opened up on the new-look Rojenny Stadium, his vision for sports development in Nigeria and the need for public spirited individuals and Corporate Nigeria to bankroll sporting activities following the laying of tartan tracks at the venue for athletic events. He also affirmed that future Olympians would be discovered at Rojenny within four years of utilization of the worldclass facilities by our upcoming athletes. Excerpts: The Rojenny Stadium is having a new facelift with the laying of tartan tracks; how soon is the stadium going to be ready for use for athletic events? As you can see, the laying of the tartan tracks at Rojenny Stadium is now a reality. The materials for the laying of the tartan tracks are here, but what is remaining is the completion of this project, so that our athletes can have a place they can race on. From what is on ground, we can comfortably say that in no distant time we have a place Nigerian athletes can call their home, because the venue is of international standard. Initially it was like a dream, I mean nursing the idea of having this project completed; therefore, from the depth of your heart, how do you feel about this latest development of having a standard venue almost ready for athletics through your partnership with the Anambra State Government in this regard? My feeling is like that of a dreamer, a dreamer dreams of not himself alone, but dreams on a selfless platform. A dreamer dreams not for what will benefit himself, but for what will benefit the entire human race. My reason for speaking in parables is simple; if one dreams for his own selfish interest that’s not visionary, but if that dream can affect the entire people positively who inhabit the earth you are on the right path! What we are doing here is enough to transform the entire society. I’m happy that in Rojenny, the dream of partnering the Anambra State Government is beginning to bear positive fruits. The state government has come forward to embrace our dream by putting standard sporting facilities in place here which are of international standard. The project commenced during Gov. Peter Obi’s administration before he handed the baton of leadership to the incumbent governor, Chief Willie Obiano. The whole process has been a continuous experience because Governor Obiano has vowed that they will do everything possible to achieve that dream of making Rojenny Games Village the hub of sports revolution in

Nigeria. Now the tartan track materials have arrived and I want to beckon on Nigerians to give the venue four years and Olympic champions will be produced from this project at Rojenny. How soon is the laying of the tartan track going to be completed because many athletes are itching and anxiously waiting to run on these tracks? Everything is the hands of the state government to finalise. The laying of the track will soon commence from my understanding because we have been waiting for years and months for these materials to be made available. Today, the materials are here and what is remaining is for the job to be completed, therefore we just need to be patient to see all these our aspirations become a reality.

Ezeonwuka

New look Rojenny Stadium undergoing reconstruction.

Also, you can see that the company handling the project has already scrubbed the hard floor to enable the turf to be smooth enough for tartan track materials to adhere to the glue that will be applied to the surface. So, the contractors are on course and ready to complete the project.

With this massive sporting project going on here, do you have a vision of owning sporting clubs at Rojenny so that these facilities will not be lying fallow and also leave a good legacy for future Nigerians to emulate? My take on your question is very simple; we have Nigerians who have

the money to own sports clubs, but they are wasting their money on politics instead of investing it on talented individuals whom God can use to make the country proud in international sporting events. We want to encourage these money bags to come forth and bankroll sporting activities at Rojenny. They can equally own clubs if they wish, so we are using the facilities here to create avenues whereby they can be encouraged to contribute their quota for sports development in Nigeria. Nothing stops individuals and Corporate Nigeria from coming here to sponsor age grade competitions because these competitions are what we need now in order to discover our future Olympians at their real ages and groom them to stardom. It might also interest you to know that Rojenny Games Village is a multi-

sporting arena which houses many sporting facilities like standard swimming pools, basketball, chess, scrabble, tennis, table tennis, handball, rugby, badminton, football, athletics or track and field events. We also have an amusement park and a mini zoo for our guests to visit. Rojenny is home away from home! Looking at the Rojenny Stadium and some sporting facilities here, it seems sporting actions have been going in the place; what’s your reaction in this regard? I cannot be able to count the number of sporting activities going on here now because they are many. For the past years or even before the renovation of the sporting facilities, we have organized many sporting competitions at Rojenny like FA Cup competitions, Traders Cup competitions, school sports events and even using the venue for hosting continental and league matches. Now the renovations of these facilities are going on, we are still hosting sporting events which means churning out future Olympians at Rojenny is a project that is dear to our heart! We are not interested in the resources accruing from using these sporting facilities, but we are interested in people using Rojenny to produce future champions. Individuals who have the financial muscle can come here and bankroll sporting events free of charge because we need to discover more athletes from the grassroots. We need these people to come home and contribute their quota to sports development in Nigeria! Finally, what does the future hold for Nigeria in sports with such world-class sporting facilities in place at Rojenny Games Village? I want to be emphatic here in answering your question. The future of sports development begins here at Rojenny Stadium because with the completion of the laying of the tartan tracks, we must begin to expect a boom in our sports development policies. It is my dream that we must take over athletics from the hands of Jamaicans and Americans. You can see that in the past, this region of the country has produced world-class short distance runners. From Mary Onyealis to Innocent Egbunikes, the list is countless. Our neighbours from Delta State are also doing wonderfully well in athletics with the discovery of athletes like Blessing Okagbare and co. So, we must not be tired in giving future Nigerian Olympians a place to train and hit stardom.

He began his youth career with Bournemouth before transferring to Southampton in 2000, where he became a professional in 2006. After a brief loan back to Bournemouth he broke into Southampton’s first team as they earned two promotions from League One to the Premier League, becoming captain in 2012. After two seasons in the top flight and an international breakthrough, he joined Liverpool in July 2014. Lallana was given his senior international debut for England in 2013 and was selected for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. And prior to the World Cup, Lallana was subject to interest from Premier League runners-up Liverpool. After long periods of negotiation Liverpool placed a reported £25 million bid which was later accepted by Southampton. Following England’s return from the World Cup, Lallana signed for Liverpool, and was handed the number 20 shirt, the number he wore during his time at Southampton. Still on his international career, Lallana has played for England Under-18s, scoring on his debut against Slovenia, 18 months after undergoing an operation to correct an irregular heartbeat. He has also played once each for England Under-19s and England Under-21s. On September 10, 2012, Lallana was called up to the senior England squad for the first time for the 2014 World Cup qualifying match against Ukraine although he was not selected for the match itself. However, on May 12, 2014, Lallana was named in the 23-man England squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He made his competitive debut on June 14 in the first group game against Italy, coming on for the last 10 minutes in place of Sturridge who had scored England’s goal in the 1–2 defeat.

McIlroy ready for Irish Open workload

Dylan Hartley:

England hooker charged over ‘headbutt’ N orthampton and England hooker Dylan Hartley will face a disciplinary panel on Wednesday after being charged with headbutting an opponent. Hartley, 29, was cited after an incident involving Jamie George during Saracens’ 29-24 victory in Saturday’s Premiership semi-final. England coach Stuart Lancaster has previously warned Hartley,

who has been banned five times, over his discipline. England will play two World Cup warm-up matches in August and one in September. Lancaster’s side will face France at Twickenham on 15 August, a week before meeting the same opposition at Stade de France. Their final match before the World Cup - which begins on 18 September and is being hosted

by England and Wales - will be against Ireland at Twickenham on 5 September. Hartley missed the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia after he was banned for 11 weeks for being sent off during the Premiership final. The Northampton captain was shown a red card for swearing at referee Wayne Barnes and calling him a “cheat”.

Rory McIlroy is confident that his off-course commitments at this week’s Irish Open will not hinder his challenge at Royal County Down. McIlroy’s charitable foundation is the official tournament host and he is certain to have a busy week. “There are a lot of obligations but that shouldn’t get in the way of me going out there and playing good golf,” McIlroy told BBC Sport. The world number one’s best Irish Open finish was a seventh spot in 2008. That was his first Irish Open appearance as a professional and since then his best was a 34th spot in 2011 with him missing the cut at Carton House and Fota Island over the last two years. McIlroy, 26, is determined to produce a better showing this year despite his off-course obligations.

And sixth seed Nadal, 28, won 6-3 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 50 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. The Spaniard is in the same half of the draw as top seed Novak Djokovic, who beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-2 7-5 6-2. Djokovic, 28, has now won 23 matches in a row as he bids to claim his first title at Roland Garros and become the eighth man to complete the career Grand Slam.

England name Australian, Bayliss as new head coach

T

revor Bayliss has been appointed as the first Australian to coach England. The 52-year-old New South Wales coach succeeds Peter Moores, whose second spell ended in a sacking in early May. Bayliss led Sri Lanka from 20072011, took temporary charge of Australia for their Twenty20 series in South Africa in 2014 and has coached Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. “It’s an honour to be appointed

England coach,” said Bayliss. “I firmly believe that the team has a bright future.” “He has a wealth of experience in coaching and has got a real know how in terms of Twenty20 and 50 over cricket. I think the Test format we have always been pretty good at but the one day format has been a shemozzle for a while and he is the man to try and bring a new energy and direction for the team. I haven’t heard anybody say anything bad about Trevor Bayliss.”

Bayliss will take up his new role in June, in time for the start of the Ashes series against Australia which begins in July. Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie had been one of several candidates for the job. The Yorkshire coach had indicated he would take the role if offered it and met twice with England director of cricket Andrew Strauss. Paul Farbrace, who led England to victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, will stay on

as Bayliss’s assistant coach, and remain in temporary charge for the second Test against the Kiwis which starts at Headingley on Friday. Bayliss played in 58 first-class matches as a batsman for his native New South Wales but never represented Australia. “What particularly excites me about the role is the chance to work with a very talented group of players, “ he added.

Real Madrid set to unveil Benitez

R

afa Benitez is already “99 percent” Real Madrid’s new coach, according to the agent of departing Blancos boss Carlo

Ancelotti. Ancelotti was fired by Madrid president Florentino Perez on Monday evening, with the Italian having paid for a 2014-15 campaign which brought no major trophies despite winning the

Champions League and Copa del Rey titles in his first season in charge the year before. Current Napoli and former Valencia, Liverpool and Chelsea manager Benitez is widely seen as the frontrunner with his agent saying the Spaniard would be “delighted” to take the job, especially with Perez having intimated that he wanted a Spanish speaker in the role. Reporters have been told that no

confirmation would be given until next week, perhaps because Benitez still has his final Serie A game as Napoli coach on Sunday evening. This chain of events seems even more likely after Ancelotti’s agent Ernesto Bronzetti told RAI that he had heard that Madrid-born Benitez a previous youth and assistant coach at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, was returning to the club as first team boss.

Asisat Oshoala wins BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award

N

igeria and Liverpool forward Asisat Oshoala has been named as the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year. The 20-year-old forward is the first player to win the new award from the BBC World Service, voted for by football fans around the world. She beat Spain’s Veronica Boquete, German Nadine Kessler, Scot Kim Little and Brazilian Marta to the honour. “I would like to say thank you to the BBC, to my fans around the world and to everyone who voted,” she said. The award is the first of its kind hosted by a global broadcaster. Oshoala, who was the youngest player

to be shortlisted, was the leading scorer at the Under-20s World Cup in Canada last summer and was voted the tournament’s best player. Her performances led Nigeria to the final, where they were narrowly beaten by Germany, and she was also a major influence in the senior Nigeria team who won the African Women’s Championship in October. That ensured their qualification for this summer’s World Cup in Canada, which

“Rafa Benitez is 99 percent Real Madrid coach,” Bronzetti said. Ancelotti had been linked with an immediate return to his former club Milan, although the 55-year-old said he will undergo a minor back operation and then take some time off -- a plan which his representative appeared to confirm. “At the moment, Ancelotti wants to take a years’ rest,” Bronzetti said. “That is his intention.”

begins on 6 June with full coverage on the BBC. Oshoala said the honour was a big lift for Nigeria before the World Cup and would help inspire young players in her homeland. “It’s a really good thing for us as a team because we now know that we have something great and now we want to go at the trophy,” she said. “We can do it, we did it in 2014 we can also do it this year as well.

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger marked his 500th appearance for the Bundesliga champions and Jurgen Klopp said goodbye to Borussia Dortmund. Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos have all been left out of Joachim Low’s Germany squad for a friendly against the USA on June 10 and a Euro 2016 qualifier at Gibraltar three days later. Thirteen World Cup winners have been called up to the squad for Germany’s final two games of the post-World Cup season, but Bayern duo Muller and Neuer -- along with Real Madrid midfielder Kroos and injury-prone Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus -- will not take part in the friendly against Jurgen Klinsmann’s U.S. side in Cologne. “I could bank on Thomas and Toni in the past, and both have them have abundant merits for DFB and the Nationalmannschaft,” Low told the official DFB website. “They have deserved a break.

BRIEFS Blatter shrugs off Figo ‘dictatorship’ claims Fifa president Sepp Blatter has brushed aside claims from Luis Figo that he runs football’s governing body as a “dictatorship” and is confident of winning a fifth term in office. Last week Figo joined Michael Praag in pulling out of the upcoming presidential elections, leaving Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein as Blatter’s sole challenger. Figo, a former Real Madrid, Inter and Barcelona star, stated in a lengthy statement that he would not put himself forward for consideration until “it is proven to me that we are not living under a dictatorship”. The Portugal legend also claimed the upcoming vote was about the “delivery of power to one man”. Responding to Figo, Blatter told Sky Sports: “Luis Figo is free to say what he wants to say. You can ask him why he called me a dictator. “I have received so many titles, but I am still the president until Friday.

Man Utd eye Karim Benzema

K

arim Benzema is being monitored by Louis van Gaal, with the Real Madrid player viewed by the Manchester United manager as an answer to their goalscoring problems. If he does decide to make a move for the striker, who would cost in the region of £40m, they may have to fight off interest from Arsenal. The United goalkeeper David De Gea, who is valued at up to £30m, could well be used as a makeweight in any deal. Although Benzema signed a five-year contract last summer there is widespread uncertainty at Real now that Carlo Ancelotti has been sacked as head coach. Rafael Benítez, who is leaving Napoli at the end of the season, is expected to replace the Italian at the Bernabéu and several Real players’ futures are in doubt, which may make it easier for Van Gaal to land Benzema should he firm up his interest.
