President Goodluck Jonathan has praised the efforts of the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in the war against Boko Haram insurgents,

Ï Says PDP leadership crisis expected, party will bounce back but noted that the equipment being used were bought during his tenure. Jonathan’s remarks on

Thursday, in an interview with Paris-based France 24 station, came in the light of the on-going probe of

alleged mismanagement and diversion of $2.1billion said to be meant for purchase of arms during

Editorial Making Nigeria ICT savvy

R

ecently, the Minister of Communications, Mr. Adebayo Shittu, announced a new road map to drive the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) from 2016 to 2020. According to Shittu, the initiative involves five steps towards making Nigeria a smart and digital-oriented country. To achieve this, he said the government would build on ICT sector growth by improving infrastructure and quality of service, while migrating Nigeria to a digitally native country through continuous capacity and ICT skills building. We are in harmony with the minister’s objective and call for the speedy implementation of the initiative. It is a fact that ICT is the world’s fastest growing industry and thus is expected to grow even further in the future. Moreover, ICT employs millions of people that are taking advantage of its innovations to revolutionise how we live and work. Definitely, ICT is increasingly bringing market information, financial services and health services to remote areas, and is helping to change people’s lives in unprecedented ways. Experts posit that with 10 percent increase in high speed Internet connections, economic growth increases by 1.3 percent. The fact that virtually all-new mobile customers in the coming years will be in developing countries, and more specifically in rural areas, means that the ICT platform is reaching population with low levels of income and literacy. As a result, ICT is becoming the largest distribution platform of providing public and private services to millions of people in rural and poor areas. According to a recent World Bank report, mobile technology has increasingly become a tool for a va-

riety of activities in the developing world and particularly in Africa. Even at that, the financial institution said that it is collaborating with the Nigeria government to develop incubation programmes aimed at honing young entrepreneurial skills particularly in software development and other innovative applications. Before now, the lack of ICT has been known to be a major factor contributing to the widening of the gap between ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ countries. Therefore, Nigeria should embrace the wonders of ICT to pull out millions of her citizens from poverty. In addition, the country has Singapore and Kenya as good examples to emulate. It is imperative to observe that Singapore’s remarkable success in economic development has been strongly associated with the country’s vigorous efforts to embrace ICT revolution in promoting economic growth. In addition, ICT has been the main driver of Kenya’s economic growth over the past decade. Since 2000, Kenya’s economy grew at an average of 3.7 percent and without it; growth would have been a lack-lustre 2.8 percent, similar to the population growth rate. Put another way, ICT was responsible for one-quarter of Kenya’s GDP growth during the first decade of the 21st century. With these, we can safely adduce that the power of economic competitiveness of a country depends on the productivity of its ICT sector. There is no gainsaying that Nigeria is far behind the level of industrialisation and technological development in this information age due to lack of welldefined ICT policies to guide development plans. We are therefore calling on the authorities to put in place adequate infrastructure that will take advantage of ICT revolution.

gladdened many hearts when former President Goodluck Jonathan finally broke his silence on the arms deal probe currently ongoing where some of his aides and associates have been linked and are being tried. When quizzed by journalists at the Geneva Press Club on Security and Development in Africa on Wednesday on the issue, the former president declared that at some point he would have to say all he knew about the series of ‘gates’ (call it probes) that are ongoing. An amiable man that he is, Jonathan, however, disappointed

the journalists itching to hear who he gave what. He said: “I would not like to comment now because the matter is in court. I cannot comment. Definitely, I will speak. My Comment now may affect witnesses and the judicial process.” That was really the right path to take since it could be prejudicial to comment on matters before the court especially from the person of the former president. But, prejudice or not, some Nigerians may not agree with the former president’s position to keep mum over the matter. Already, the EFCC is said to be weighing options whether to invite him for questioning since a large chunk of the

misappropriated fund was said to have gone into his campaign during the 2015 general election. The ‘appropriate time’ Jonathan wishes to speak is still not understood, because by the time the court cases against his aides are concluded and the courts formed opinions on the matter, it might be too late for the ex-President to give his own side. The news in public domain is to the effect that he gave verbal approvals to certain people to collect in the ‘stolen’ funds, while there were those that claimed to have gotten written approvals. This illustrious Ijaw son has left a legacy that needs to be protected and guarded. So, coming out early to clear his name from some of these reports would do more good than harm.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, arrested and detained the immediate past Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd). Amosu, alongside other military chiefs, source said, is being detained over allegation of corruption in arms procurement during his tenure. An official of the EFCC confirmed the development. The official said Amosu was arrested on Wednesday. Attempts to get spokesman of the anti-graft agency, Wilson Uwujaren, to confirm the arrest of the former air chief was abortive as he did not

respond to messages to his mobile telephone line and his e-mail. President Muhammadu Buhari had recently directed the EFCC to investigate the former air chief and other serving and retired military officers over alleged misconduct established against them. Among those to be investigated include the embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, former Chief of Defence Staff, Marshal Alex Badeh and another former Chief of Air Staff, Mohammed Umar. Dasuki is currently facing charges over alleged $2.1 billion arms procurement deal.

A panel investigating arms procurement during the administration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan, had submitted an interim report to Buhari alleging that equipment procurement in the air force during Amosu’s tenure was characterised by fraud. “The procurement processes were arbitrarily carried out and generally characterized by irregularities and fraud,” the panel said, adding, “in many cases, the procured items failed to meet the purposes they were procured for, especially the counter insurgency efforts in the North East.” In details made public by

presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on January 15, the panel said, “A major procurement activity undertaken by ONSA for NAF was that concerning the contracts awarded to Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd. “Between January 2014 and February 2015, NAF awarded 10 contracts totalling Nine Hundred and Thirty Million, Five Hundred Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety US Dollars ($930,500,690.00) to SEI Nig Ltd. “Letters of award and End User Certificates for all the contracts issued by NAF and ONSA respectively did not reflect the contract sums.

Mrs. Olafunmiloye Bolanle, the Chairman of the State Wealth Creation Agency (WECA) gave the warning on Thursday in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state. Bolanle, who said this during a meeting with the

leaders of the herdsmen at the farm town hall also bemoaned cattle rearers` invasion of farms with attendant large scale destructions to crops and other recreational facilities, despite several meetings held with them on the same issue. According to her, the Ore Agro Business City is one of the largest among other farm cities established across the state by the Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led administration. The chairman said the centre would serve as incubation centre for training and exposing youths to the entire agricultural value chain that would propel them into wealth creation ventures. She said the present administration would give priority to agricultural development as an alternative source of revenue and employment generation for the unemployed youths.

Senate, on Thursday, set machinery in motion to investigate the sale of 10 National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) by the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) for the sum of $ 5billion, less than their actual worth. This was sequel to a motion raised by Senator Mohammed Hassan (PDP Yobe South), calling the attention of the Senate to look into the

issue. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki had expressed displeasure on how a government agency could wave the sum of $3billion, and sell the projects for $5 billion after an over $8 billion investment. The federal government had invested the sum of $8.2 billion to set up the 10 power projects, whereas the structures were sold off for $5.8 billion, while waving the sum of $3 billion for no reason.

Kogi stakeholders explain choice of Egbunu as Bello’s Dep Gov Shun cultism, FEDPOLY Offa Rector Lateef Ibrahim, Abuja

ÎÎÎThe campaign coordinators of the Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello in the Eastern senatorial district of the state, on Thursday, explained that their decision to nominate an Abuja based publisher and politician, Mr. Gowon Usman Egbunu as their preferred deputy governorship candidate, was primarily to douse the tension generated by the sudden death of Prince Abubakar Audu before the final result of the election was announced.

The campaign coordinators of the newly sworn-in Governor Bello announced the nomination of Egbunu in a-six-page letter addressed to the governor, and signed by Dr. Yakubu Ugwalawo, the Leader and Senatorial Coordinator, as well as Hon. Hassan Haruna, Hon. Yahaya Menyaga and Prince Isah Abdullahi, all zonal coordinators and nine other local government coordinators. The Leader and Senatorial Coordinator of the campaign, Dr. Yakubu Ugwalawo said Thursday in Abuja that Mr. Enema Paul, who

alleged that the signatures of the coordinators were forged and that Egbunu was never nominated for the deputy governorship slot of the Kogi state, was not even a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, the said Enema was the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the last gubernatorial election in the state and that he polled 940 votes in the whole of the state, wondering why he has suddenly become a meddlesome interloper in a matter that did not concern

him. In his words: “Enema Paul has never been a member of the Campaign Coordinators of Governor Yahaya Bello in the East Senatorial District of Kogi state. He is also not a member of our party, APC. Am so surprise that he is commenting on an issue that does not concern him? “If he (Enema) claims he is a member of the campaign coordinators of Governor Yahaya Bello in the East Senatorial District of Kogi state, let him tell the whole world the position he held there”.

on Thursday in Abuja, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Abdulrazaq Namdas said the letter was intended and written for the 4th and 5th National Assembly when the former president was in office. Namdas stated this just as Senator Dino Melaye said the former president was mistaking the current 8th National Assembly as the same Assembly that allegedly defrauded him in 2007, with members collecting his money and refusing to implement his bid for a third term in office. Namdas said “I know it is a parliamentary practice for letters to be read on the floor of the House by the Speaker. We have absolute respect for Olusegun Obasanjo, but I want to state that his letter was meant for the 4th and 5th Assembly. We are the 8th Assembly and I can confirm that we are working in tandem with the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari. “We are upright and would not want to be distracted on the very important issue at hand which is the budget”. Daily Times recalls that Obasanjo had in a letter dated January 13, 2016, accused members of the National Assembly of fixing and earning salaries and allowances not approved by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). The lawmaker also used the briefing to debunk the allegation made by a House member, that each member of the House was given N10million and motorcycles by the leadership of the House. “We don’t know where the lawmaker got his information from. No member was given the alleged money and motorcycle. When a lawmaker makes such an allegation, it gives us cause for concern. If the lawmaker is making the allegation to tarnish our image, that is

too bad. “I can assure you that we are not going to allow the matter to die”, he added. He said the House has adjourned plenary till February 16 to enable the House concentrate on legislative work on the 2016 budget at the committee level. Meanwhile, the senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Dino Melaye on Thursday, said that the letter sent by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo was borne out of misplacement of anger. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the content of the letterm stating that Nigerians must work to support the anti-corruption stand of the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration. Melaye further expressed the hope that the letter was not an attempt to distract the country from the Halliburton and Siemens corruption allegations. “I have tremendous respect for president Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo, elder statesman, respected pan-Africanist and committed patriot. I went through the letter written to all Senators and members of the House of Representatives and the letter i can see is a misplacement of anger. “Our leader is mistaking the 8th National Assembly as the same Senate Assembly that defrauded him in 2007, those who collected his money and refused to implement the 3rd term agenda. I appeal to Baba that we are not the ones, please. “After 9 years of that bribery saga, the first of its kind, I expect forgiveness to have taken place. There was the case of bribery introduced by the Obasanjo regime in the desperate attempt to remove Speaker Ghali Umar Na’abba from office then. In fact there was open display of that bribery money on the floor of the house. That government exposed the National Assembly to corruption and easy money.

against Boko Haram are those equipment we procured.” The former president stated that the terrorism caught the country unprepared, but added that his administration laid a solid foundation for insurgency to be defeated. “When Boko Haram started in Nigeria, we had no terror experience. Yes, we had armed robbery and other common crimes, but terrorism was different because the people involved were not afraid to die. “So, you need a different mechanism to confront terrorism, you need superior technology, so that you will be able to stop them even before the attack. We never had the equipment, but when we were confronted,

we started acquiring and before I left office we built reasonable capacity and I believe with what we left behind and also with what the new government will acquire, they will be able to prosecute this terror war to a reasonable conclusion.” Jonathan also noted that the crisis rocking his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was because of the loss of the 2015 poll. However, he expressed optimism that PDP will soon recover its stability. “The PDP definitely will have some minor issues, it is expected… We lost the presidency and definitely we will have some kind of leadership problems. When you have a president, everybody looks up to the

president. But when you no longer have the president, it becomes difficult for the party to have strong leadership,” the former president added. “I believe whatever you observe will be sorted out. Leaders of the party, elders of the party have been meeting and all this perceived disagreement will soon be sorted out. “Every political party has misunderstanding, it is not new, it is always there. From the beginning of PDP, even before I got to Abuja as a vice-president and president, there were instances when the chairman of the party will be asked to step down. And some officers leave from time to time when there are issues. So what is hap-

pening is not new, but I promise you that PDP will stabilize. “In fact, by March this year, we are going in to elect officers at the lowest levels of the wards to the local government, to the states, to the zones, then of course the national officers will be elected; that is just in March. So the party will bounce back, whatever you are perceiving, it always happen and we will get over it.” The former President also said that he will speak on the controversy surrounding the appropriation of the funds meant for the procurement of arms under his government by the then National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki at the right time.

Again, Buhari rejects devaluation, says ‘I won’t kill Naira’ Egena Egena, Abuja

ÎÎÎPresident

Muhammadu Buhari declared late Wednesday in Nairobi, Kenya that he was yet to be convinced that Nigeria and its people will derive any tangible benefits from an official devaluation of the Naira. Speaking at an interactive meeting with Nigerians living in Kenya, President Buhari maintained that while export-driven economies could benefit from devaluation of their currencies, devaluation would only result in further inflation and hardship for the

poor and middle classes in Nigeria’s import-dependent economy. A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, which announced the decision, quoted Buhari as saying that he had no intention of bringing further hardship on the country’s poor who, he said, had suffered enough already. The President, who stated that Naira devaluation was akin to having it “killed”, said proponents of devaluation of the nation’s currency would have to work much harder to convince him that ordinary Nigeri-

ans will gain anything from it. The President also rejected suggestions that the Central Bank of Nigeria should resume the sale of foreign exchange to Bureaux de Change (BDCs), saying that the Bureau de Change business had become a scam and a drain on the economy. “We had just 74 of the bureaux in 2005, now they have grown to about 2, 800,” President Buhari noted in the statement. He alleged, according to the statement, that some bank and government officials used surrogates to run the BDCs and prosper at public expense by obtaining foreign exchange from

government at official rates and selling it at much higher rates. “We will use our foreign exchange for industry, spare parts and the development of needed infrastructure. “We don’t have the Dollars to give to the BDCs. Let them go and get it from wherever they can, other than the Central Bank,” Buhari was said to have told the gathering. It said the President reaffirmed his conviction that about a third of petroleum subsidy payments under the previous administration was bogus. “They just stamped papers and collected our foreign exchange,” he said.

PDP hails S’ Court rulings on Rivers, Ebonyi

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated the governments and people of Rivers and Ebonyi states on the affirmation, by the Supreme Court, of the elections of Governors Nyesom Wike and Dave Umahi of the two states respectively. In a statement, on Thursday, it said that the landmark rulings of the apex court had not only rekindled hope in democracy but, also, underscored the strategic importance of an impartial judiciary for the survival of

democracy in our country. The PDP commended what it called “the maturity, responsiveness and patriotism” displayed by the Supreme Court in its rulings. The two judgements, the PDP pointed out, had resounded among the people not only for being in consonant with their wishes and aspiration as expressed at the elections, but also for reviving their already dwindling confidence in the democratic process and the Nigerian project. The party said, “Furthermore, the rulings have affirmed not only the popularity of the

two governors but, also, that of the PDP in the two states and other states of the South South and South-East geo-political zones, and, of course, in most states across the country, where

it still maintain very strong grassroots support and structures, the turnout of events in the 2015 general elections notwithstanding. “We note that despite the temporary setback of the 2015 Presidential Elections, the PDP remains the only party with genuine national interest and capacity to deliver a stable and united country with clearcut economic direction, which Nigerians earnestly crave at this point in time, and for which we are rebuilding to regain power at the centre in 2019, in spite of our challenges and continued persecution of our leaders.

Saraki seeks stronger Nigeria – Ukraine ties

ÏÏÏSenate

President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Thursday, canvassed a stronger bilateral and economic ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Ukraine. Saraki, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, stated this while playing host the Ukrainian ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Valerii Aleksandruk, who visited him in Abuja. He thanked the Ukrainian authorities for their support to Nigeria, especially in the fight against terrorism, while commiserating with Ukrainian government over the recent loss of lives in the eastern part of the country.

Saraki said: “I want to use this opportunity to show our appreciation for the friendly relationship that exists between the two countries. Particularly, I want to also acknowledge the support that Ukraine has given us in the fight against terrorism, the military co-operations, and supply of arms and ammunition which has gone a long way to help us in the fight.” He also said that the Senate would support the creation of a friendship group between the National Assembly and Ukrainian legislature for the exchange of ideas on parliamentary best practices. While responding to the call for

the establishment of a friendship group between both parliaments, Saraki said: “There’s need to have exchange of ideas between our two parliaments. We are very open for that kind of interaction, either for our members to visit the parliament of Ukraine and for yours to come here, and I truly support the idea of the setting up of friendship groups within the two parliaments. “I think that, if we can do that, that will begin to open doors for more interactions between your country and Nigeria. Confusion in PDP as governors tackle Gulak There is confusion in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Governors’ Forum has tackled Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, a former Political Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, for declaring himself as the National Chairman of PDP. Gulak, a chieftain of the party, had earlier on Wednesday at the PDP secretariat, claimed he has assumed office as PDP national Chairman following a court ruling. However, the Governors’ Forum in a communiqué issued after its meeting held late Wednesday in Abuja and signed by the Director General of the forum, Earl Osaro said: “The invasion of the party headquarters on Wednesday by Ahmed Gulak, who reportedly assumed the Chairmanship of the PDP, is regrettable and condemnable. “We take cognisance of the judgment by the court in Abuja which ordered the acting chairman to vacate office for any other person from the North-East zone of Nigeria. “Our party’s constitution has enough provisions for that and the necessary process has been put in motion,” the communiqué stated. It stated that the appropriate organs of the party would meet soonest to elect a national chairman of the party from the appropriate zone. The forum also congratulated Chief Nyesom Wike and Mr. Dave Umahi, the governors of Rivers and Ebonyi states respectively, over the affirmation of their victory at the poll by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Alhaji Gulak, had on Wednesday pronounced himself chairman of the Party. He made the pronouncement inside the National Working Committee Hall at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. He spoke in company of some of his loyalists, including former Special Assistant to ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe and a former Commissioner in Bayelsa State, Chief Ayakeme Whisky. Gulak announced that his decision to take over the leadership of the party was backed by the court order of December 16, 2015, which asked the party to name someone from the North-East to replace the former chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, who had been asked to step aside following the party’s disastrous outing in the 2015 general election. He called on the NWC of the party to work with him in order to move the party forward in order to strengthen the opposition.

controlled the states of the Western Region in the Second Republic described the late Chief as a true progressive. The traditional ruler who was speaking recently in Oyo as part of activities marking his 45th coronation anniversary affirmed his support for the ruling APC, urging those yet to embrace the broom revolution in his kingdom, particularly citizens of Oyo West, to have a rethink and team up with the Ajimobi-led administration. “What are we even talking about? If (Chief Obafemi) Awolowo reincarnates today, he will join the APC, because he was a progressive and APC is a progressive and peopleoriented party. So I have no apologies for supporting them”, he stressed. His words: “I’m saying this with every sense of responsibility and I want to be quoted, we are fully supportive of Ajimobi’s drive to give Oyo State a new lease of life. He is doing well and I want my people to continue to support him. “I want to, once again, call on the people of Oyo West to embrace the APC. We can’t gain anything from the opposition. If Ajimobi is not doing well, I won’t support or ask you to queue behind him. Some people sometimes accused me of taking sides with

the governor. But the man is doing very well”, he added. The state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, attributed his almost six-year cordial relationship with the Alaafin, to the monarch’s altruism, understanding and sense of balancing in all matters since he became governor. Describing the monarch in glowing terms, the governor said that their intimacy had continued to surprise many people; especially those he said had predicted that the monarch’s support for him would not last beyond one year. He urged Yoruba sons and daughters to accord more respect to the stool of Alaafin, whom he described as a repertoire of Yoruba history and culture, savvy and intellectually deep. Ajimobi said: “I make bold to say that the Alaafin stands out among traditional rulers in this country. He is deep intellectually. He is bold and courageous. He does not suffer fools gladly. Baba has a sense of balancing and appropriateness. “He is a very considerate man that has been so supportive of our administration and I’m yet to see his equal. Many have insinuated that our cordial relationship will not last beyond one year. But it’s now almost six years and counting. This has been

possible because Baba is savvy and very considerate. “Alaafin is a monarch we have to continue to revere because of his panache, finesse, boldness, courage and accommodation. I have no doubt that you will reign for long and we will always be here to celebrate you.” The governor said that Yoruba were unarguably the most learned and exposed today, having contributed hugely to the body of knowledge in all spheres of human endeavour at home and in the Diaspora. He advised the Yoruba to love one another and abstain from the pull-him-down syndrome, which, he said, was responsible for the deluge of petitions before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) authored by Yoruba against their kinsfolk. He was equally worried that the race was now lagging behind in development indices because of lack of cooperation and political leadership tussle. The governor said: “Go to EFCC today. Yoruba have more petitions written against Yoruba, which are mostly frivolous. I don’t know why we should hate ourselves. We are lagging behind today because of conspiracies. Let us have a rethink and move our region forward.”

Mixed reactions as Governor Bello is sworn-in without deputy It went down in the history books last Wednesday when the 4th democratically elected Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello was sworn in without a Deputy Governor. The development left many wondering and asking the question, ‘what is the position of the Law about this unprecedented happening’? Did the Constitution of the land not adequately take care of this eventuality? The first drama was enacted when the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and former governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu dropped dead shortly before the election was concluded. This caused an uproar in the state and the country as the Constitution did not make any provision for such development. This provided an opportunity for Yahaya Bello to come in instead of Audu’s running mate, whom many had felt would step into Audu’s shoes in the event of his death. Of course, the supposedly deputy governorship candidate, James Faleke who ran on a joint ticket with late Audu had declined to be a deputy to Bello. Despite of his refusal, and his

Faleke recourse to the courts, the APC did not appoint another person to replace him as the deputy until the inauguration on Wednesday, thus opening the door for a possible constitutional crisis. Expectedly, a lot of Nigerians, especially senior lawyers have been expressing divergent views about the implication of swearing in Yahaya Bello as governor of Kogi State without a deputy taking the oath of office alongside with him. Reacting to the situation,

Bello Mr. Adetunji Fadairo (SAN) described the situation as precarious. According to him, the constitution did not favour the swearing-in of governor without a deputy. His words: “If there is no deputy governorship candidate, I think there is a constitutional provision for somebody to act, probably the Speaker. I don’t think the governor is allowed to be sworn in without a deputy. Constitutionally, it is untidy.”

A human rights and constitutional lawyer, Adetokunbo Mumini said the constitution did not give any specific role to the deputy governor who is more or less like an appointee of the governor, adding, however, that there will be judicial intervention in the Kogi matter. “It has never happened before that a governor would be sworn in without a deputy. I think that what should have happened is that the APC should have appointed another deputy governor-elect immediately Faleke declined, so he would be sworn in together with the governor. That is what the law provides for”, he added. Chief Albert Akpomudje (SAN) believes the governor represents the substance, saying it is only when the governorship candidate is not in place that there will be an issue. “The main man is there. It is only when he is not there that there can be serious issues. The governor can be sworn in while the issue of his deputy can be regularised subsequently”, he said. Lagos-based lawyer, Ebun Olu Adegboruwa said it was shocking that Bello was sworn in without a deputy.

“It is against the constitution and electoral act that a candidate is being sworn in without a deputy. And apart from that, Bello is not qualified because he did not participate in the election. The votes that were cast in Kogi State were in favour of the late Audu and Faleke as such Bello, cannot claim another person’s votes”, he said. Dignitaries in attendance at the inauguration included the National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun as well as the governors of Nasarawa and Benue states, Tanko Almakura and Samuel Ortom and the Minister of Communication Technology, Adebayo Shittu. President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, was represented by Kabir Gaya, a senator and former governor of Kano. The Senator representing Kogi East, Dino Melaye, who gave the welcome address, said Wednesday’s inauguration was historic because “a minority is now the governor of Kogi state”. He pledged that Mr. Bello would not disappoint the people of the state and called on all aggrieved people to unite and cooperate with the new governor for the sake of Kogi State.

Bayelsa Govt: It’s wrong for civil servants to be partisan Amidst speculations that the Bayelsa State government is complying names of workers who allegedly supported the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last governorship election in the state, the state governor, Seriake Dickson said it was wrong for civil servants to be partisan. Though, the governor, who spoke through his deputy, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (Retired) refuted any plan to sack the workers as being rumoured over the development, he however said that if it was true that some workers did that, it was wrong. His words: “There is no such decision by government to punish people because they have supported a political party or not. But if I must add that, if it was done, it was not proper for

civil servants to openly canvass for votes for anybody. “That is not the proper practice. If it was done, I am not aware but I read it on Facebook. In my discussion with His Excellency, he asked me to emphasize it that there is no government decision to retrench people that they are supporting or they are not supporting government’, he declared. He added in Yenagoa while briefing Journalists on the income and expenditure profile of the state for the month of November that there was no plans to retrench some civil servants for allegedly expressing support for a major political party during the Governorship election in the state. This was in apparent reaction to reports in some section of the media that there were indica-

tions that the State Government had allegedly identified and shortlisted over 500 civil servants in the state’s civil service for sanction and punishment following their alleged support for the opposition APC against the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just-concluded governorship election in the state. The reports had alleged that the affected civil servants would not receive their salaries for the months of December and January while others have been penciled down for sack as part of their punishment for being pro-APC in the poll. At the Transparency Briefing for the month under review the state government declared a deficit of over N1.7 billion deficit for the month. The stated that while the state

When will the circus show in Kogi end? Stories by Akinjide Akintola and Femi Fasipe Forty-year old businessman-turnedpolitician, Alhaji Yahaya Bello,of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday made history by being inaugurated in Kogi State as the youngest governor in the country. He also made history as the first governor to be sworn-in in the country without having a deputy. This was because the Deputy Governorelect, Mr. James Faleke, failed to present himself for the occasion making good his earlier threat not to attend. Faleke was running mate the late Abubakar Audu, the party’s candidate who dropped only hours after his the election in which he was leading was declared inconclusive. Faleke had expected to step into his late boss’ shoes, but his party thought otherwise and presented Bello in his stead. Thus, Faleke had earlier on Wednesday described the inauguration of Bello as “a rape of democracy,” alleging that there were plans to “announce my name for oath taking at least three times after which they would declare that the deputy governorelect has absconded”. Before taking the oath, Bello had said he would not force Faleke to be his deputy since there were other options. “It’s not compulsory and I cannot force anyone to deputise me, if he doesn’t deputise me, there are options,” he had told Channels Television. But Faleke said he was not invited to Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony and that he had no reason to attend the event. He explained that this was because he was challenging the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare the November 21 governorship election inconclusive in court. In an interview with Channels TV Faleke, who has also challenged the decision of the APC to choose Bello over him as replace-

Bello

Oyegun

Faleke

ment for the late Prince Audu, described the choice of Bello as a coup against the people of Kogi. The APC chieftain stressed that he would not accept the position of deputy governor of the state. He said contrary to reports that the party was making efforts to reconcile aggrieved parties in the election, nobody had reached out to him. He slammed the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun, for failing to do what he considered the right thing following Audu’s death. “I am speaking before Nigerians and I am making it very clear that nobody reached out to me. Nobody from our party’s national secretariat or the state secretariat of our party ever reached out to me on this issue,” Faleke said. “The only time they ever reached out to me was on December 31… when the chair-

man of our party announced the decision of the National Working Committee to all of us to say the NWC had adopted Alhaji Yahaya Bello as the governorship candidate for the December 5 election.” Faleke said he and some other members had made it clear that they felt that the party should have called them earlier to discuss the issue. “Thereafter, there was no consultation until today. I want to make it clear that the party chairman, Chief John Oyegun, that we saw as a father has decided to champion a cause that is anti-people. That is why we were not invited (for the inauguration),” he added. He stressed that he would only settle the problem out of court only on the condition that Bello agrees to resign as governor. He argued that his actions did not amount to anti-party activities, adding that the party could only be supreme when its activities are based on equity and justice. “For me I see what has happened in the party as a civilian coup d’état. It is a civilian coup d’état because if such a situation happens in the military, those behind it will face the firing squad,” he said, adding that the best way forward was to head to the court. He added that Bello, rather than him should be accused of anti-party activities as all of his actions have been aimed at protecting the party and ensuring that the Peoples Democratic Party does not snatch victory from it. He said, “It was Alhaji Yahaya Bello that worked against the party. He took the party to court before the election, took our late leader, Audu to court before the election and he lost his polling unit to PDP, lost his ward to PDP and lost his local government area to PDP. And I made it clear that day (during the meeting) that if 50 per cent of us seated in that hall had lost our polling units, lost our wards and our local governments, there would have been nothing for us to celebrate.” He said he had requested Oyegun to get

the party to sue INEC to declare the results instead of declaring the November 21 election inconclusive, but the chairman declined, saying the party could not be seen to be taking its own government to court. In the days leading to the inauguration of Bello, there were comical reports that the Kogi East Senatorial District had nominated one Gowon Egbunu as replacement for Faleke who they believed would not attend the swearing-in-ceremony But the Kogi East Coordinators of the Yahaya Bello Campaign Organisation denied nominating Egbunu as replacement for Faleke as the Deputy Governor of the state ahead of the inauguration. Speaking at a news conference in Lokoja, the campaign coordinators declared that their purported endorsement of Egbunu as reported by a section of the media was a fraud, stressing that their signatures were forged. Their spokesman, Paul Enema asserted that he and his colleagues did not hold any meeting to nominate Egbunu, let alone issuing a communiqué to the media to that effect. “Gowon Egbunu is strange to us. We don’t know him, we did not hold any meeting, talk less of issuing a statement to the press,” Enema asserted. While noting that the issue of who becomes Bello’s deputy is beyond the coordinators, he stressed that “It is only the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress that can handle it”. But it appears the national leadership of the party is incapable of handling that for now as all eyes are now on the courts and tribunal over the election. The issues to be determined are now legion ranging from pre-election to post swearing in. and it does appears that since the party was unable to resolve the issue running mate between Faleke and Bello, the final arbiter has to be the Supreme Court which hopefully will be able to stop the circus shows. Meanwhile, the show will continue and as usual, the people will suffer for it.

over N6.5billion. Out of the expenditure made, N4.6 billion went for salary of civil servants while that for political appointees was over N624.2 million. Earlier, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Esueme Dan-Kikile had given thumbs up for ournalists for their professional reportage during the recently concluded Governorship election in the state. He however urged media outfits to refrain from sensationalism, appealing to professionals to seek clarifications from the relevant authorities to ensure balance before publishing their reports.

Mr. Kikile reiterated that the monthly transparency briefing was the hallmark of the current administration in the state, geared towards enthroning a culture of accountability in governance. Dickson was re-elected on the platform of the PDP, defeating former Governor of the state, Timipre Sylva of the APC and Moses Siasia of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted the governorship election on 5 and 6 December 2015, and the supplementary poll on 9 January 2016.It was characterized by violence, especially in Southern Ijaw and other Local Government Areas of the state.

Secondus still PDP’s Acting National chairman -NWC Lateef Ibrahim, Abuja and Babajide Okeowo, Lagos

ÎÎÎThe

National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday said the Prince Uche Secondus remains the Acting National Chairman of the party, assuring all members of the party nationwide that there has not been any change whatsoever in the leadership composition of the party at the national level. However, Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, on Thursday, insisted that he remains the authentic chairman of the party. The PDP’s NWC position was disclosed in a statement issued by its National Legal Adviser, Barrister Victor Kwon, in Abuja. The declaration came in the wake of report that governors elected on the party’s platform at the end of their meeting on Wednesday asked Secondus, to quit office as the Acting National Chairman of the PDP. The governors were said to have directed Secondus to handover the running of the party’s secretariat to the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and return to his position as the deputy national chairman. However, the party’s NWC in its statement on Thursday, insisted that there was no change in the leadership composition at the national level. The NWC statement reads: “For the avoidance of doubt,

Ï No, I’m the authentic chairman, says Gulak Ï Party’s NEC, other organs meet next week the statutory organs of the party, the NWC, National Caucus, BoT and NEC will be meeting next week to deliberate on some developments including the replacement, from the North East of Alhaji Adamu Muazu, who resigned as the National Chairman of the party. “The replacement will be in strict adherence to the provisions of the constitution of our great party as specified in section 47(6). Until then, the status quo remains, which means the Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, remains as the Acting National Chairman. “Furthermore, it must be reiterated that all relevant stakeholders of our party, including the PDP Governor’s Forum, National Caucus and the Board of Trustees (BoT) as well as our leadership structures at all levels are united behind the current National Working Committee in the efforts to rebuild, reposition and strengthen our party for the challenges ahead. “The leadership of our party has resolved to remain focused and not be distracted by the unpatriotic actions of the former Political Adviser to the former President because we are privy to his agenda of being an agent of destabilisation in the party. “While urging all members, especially those with various aspirations to dedicate to actions that unite rather than divide our ranks, the NWC wishes to assure of its unflinching commitment

to the wider interest of the party, especially at this challenging time”, it said. Meanwhile, Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, on Thursday, insisted that he remains the national chairman of PDP, urging aggrieved members to respect the rule of law. Speaking during an interview with a television station monitored in Lagos, Gulak declared that he is chairman of the party by the instrument of law. “By the instrument of the

law, I am the national chairman of the PDP. I am the competent person that can preside over the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party. “We should begin to imbibe the culture of complying with the rule of law, respecting court orders and doing the right thing. We must subject ourselves to the law of the land. If we are to go by the rule of the law that is valid and subsisting, I am the chairman of the party, and we are not fighting anybody. We are all members of the same family,” he said.

Furthermore, Gulak said: “The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) are claiming that their tenure will only end in 2018, but can these people lead us to victory in forthcoming elections? Do they still command the respect and trust of Nigerians? In saner climes, they should have thrown in the towel after their performance at the last elections.” He also debunked allegations that he is seeking attention, saying that he has been able to gather all the attention he needs. “I have been in this game

FG allays fears over tax increase Egena Egena, Abuja

ÎÎÎThe

Federal Government said on Thursday said that it was not contemplating any increase in taxes in order to fund the 2016 budget despite the slump in the price of crude oil. It insisted, however, that there would be an expansion of Value Added Tax (VAT) collection with a projected increase of 20 percent in the 2016 fiscal year. According to the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, while the Federal Government was not tin-

kering with the idea of raising taxes, it would ensure that those who are making money promptly pay their taxes without exception. “We have agreed not to raise taxes but those who are making money should pay their taxes,” the Minister insisted. Udoma disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the monthly meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Aso Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He was joined at the briefing by the governors

for so long a time. I have been involved in politics for over 26 years now. I did not get into politics by accident, it was by design. I have gotten all the attention I need in the world. I was the first speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly,” he said Gulak and his supporters had stormed the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja on Wednesday where he told a news conference that he was assuming office as the National Chairman of PDP. He claimed that he had a court judgment in his favour.

of Lagos, Anambra and Jigawa. The Minister stated that come what may, the capital component of the 2016 budget would not be reduced because the projects target would be of immense benefit to the nation, especially the teeming unemployed and underemployed youth population. He also pointed out that the 2016 budget was geared towards energising the economy, especially as it relates to inclusive growth and job creation While urging the states to partner with the Federal Government in the implementation of the

safety nets programmes contained in the budget, Udoma disclosed that the executive arm would work with the National Assembly to reduce cash call through innovative financing. His message to the states: “Decline in oil price may persist – will affect distributable revenues for all tiers of government. States are encouraged to explore innovative financing options and increase their IGRs to compliment their revenue share from the Federation Account.∙ He said the Federal Government expects combination of efforts by all tiers of government to deliver

the necessary stimulus required to revive the economy. “At this time, the Federal Government will not increase VAT rate but will improve upon VAT collection which is currently only about 20%. States were encouraged to help FIRS in VAT collection and remittance.” Also speaking, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano who led his Lagos and Jigawa counterparts at the briefing said NEC had directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and other revenue generating agencies to forward their budgets for approval by the

Finance Ministry before they would be entitled to spend any money. He said: “The Vice President reiterated FG’s policy that NNPC and other agencies must present budget for approval before spending in line with TSA.” On the probe of federal revenue generating agencies approved by NEC, Governor Ambode of Lagos State said the Ad-hoc Committee submitted a memo to the Council for approval on its findings. NEC also received report from the Accountant General of the Federal that the Excess Crude Account as at December 2015 had about 2.2 million dollars.

council has challenged the Delta state government to put necessary security measures in place in order to track down the killers of the monarch of Ubulu-uku Kingdom, Obi Edward Akaeze Ofulue. Late Obi Ofulue was kid-

napped on January 5th along Obior/Igbodo road, close to his domain by gunmen, but his corpse was recovered by the police last week Thursday, January 21st, in the forest around Umunede, within the state. In a three point communiqué issued at the end of the emergency meeting in Asaba on Thursday, the traditional rulers condemned in strong term the

brutal murder of the monarch, saying it was the duty of government to fish out the killers The communiqué, which was signed by the acting chairman of the council, HRM Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor of Owa kingdom, also called on the government to put necessary machinery in motion to guarantee the security of traditional rulers in the state.

They made it clear that a situation where criminal elements harass monarchs in the state was unacceptable to them. They also appealed to their subjects at home and in diaspora to collaborate with government in terms of providing adequate security for traditional institutions. The meeting was attended by high ranking traditional rulers, including the Orodje of Okpe, Orhue I, Major General Felix Mujekparoum, Pere of Akugbene Mein, Kalanama 8th, Ovie of Uvwie Emmanuel Abbey I, the Ovie of Agbon and his Ughelli counterpart, amongst others.

Niger to reposition media outfits - Commissioner Pita Chikwem Minna

ÏÏÏThe

Niger state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, on Thursday, expressed the state government’s readiness to reposition its media outfits to make them more effective and serve the people better. Vatsa said the decision to reorganise the media organisations followed their near comatose position over the last couple of years as a result of lack of government attention to the organisations.

He made this known when he received the chairman and members of the Niger state chapter of the veterans committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) that paid him a courtesy visit in his office. Vatsa said it was sad that all the media outfits owned by the state government are not in a position to perform their constitutional roles properly making the state to depend mostly on foreign media for dissemination of information to the people at the grassroots.

Nigerians almost called for return of military under PDP – Ajakaiye

Idu Jude Abuja

ÏÏÏPermanent

Secretary, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Babatope Ajakaiye, has said that impunity within the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last 16 years, almost made Nigerians opt for military intervention to rescue the country from total collapse. Mr. Ajakaiye stated this while playing host to the participants of the senior course 38 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Thursday in Abuja, on the theme of research, repositioning the non-oil sector for revenue and economic empowerment. He said that the country and indeed the Federal Capital Territory, has enormous resources that if well harnessed, can generate funds to measure that of the oil revenue.

According to him, “corruption and impunity had led Nigeria astray. Nigeria have had bad leadership since the advent of civilian rule. Thank God for Buhari’s change mantra, but are we really ready for the change? Enough is enough. Among the politicians, the military and traditional rulers, not until we said we are ready to change then we should be deceiving ourselves.” The Permanent Secretary was concerned about the way the calamity and horrendous Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise was handled, noting that people who perpetrated the evil that led to the demise of thousands of people walk freely on Nigerian roads without any action taken by the authority. He said, “that is the level we have degenerated and at that point Nigerians were ready to go for the worst option to save the country after all what are we

leaving for our children.” Speaking further, he stressed the need for authorities to hold responsible those that had looted public funds if democracy must survive in Nigeria “just go around Abuja and see where mansions are built, kept for lizards and other reptiles, and these are built with government stolen money. The value are tied down because the properties are untaxed with huge revenue denied.” Unhappy Ajakaiye, reminded that sectors capable of creating employment and revenue generation in the country also have been killed with emphasis to the textile industries. Also for the enforcement of land rent payment, he noted that residents of the FCT and specifically land owners, possibly have refused to pay land owners rent, another source of huge revenue loss from the Abuja geographic information system (AGIS).

NIGERIA: Which way from here?

urrently in the Nigerian polity especially on the socio-political platform, several unthinkable scenes have transpired in different occasions since the present administration assumed office. They range from the #DasukiGate to fall of crude oil price, hiking of the petrol pump price, reemergence of Biafran agitation and NigerDelta militancy, the governors’ protest over continued payment of the #18000 minimum wage, the alleged abrupt disappearance of original copy of the 2016 appropriation bill from the National Assembly. The aforementioned anomalies had made many of the country’s citizens at home and in the Diaspora to insinuate that Nigeria has encroached her doomed state. Every sane being as well as anyone who thinks good of this country ought to be concerned with the way forward from this vertex of quagmire. While searching for the most viable way of settling a crisis or putting a holistic end to any menace, it is imperative to firstly ascertain the origin. Thus, before seeking for the way

out, the paramount question is, how did we get here? Some people are of the view that these predicaments are attributable to the 16-year misrule of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP); some others in their understanding are preoccupied with a belief that these plights are attributed to so much promises made by the APC; on another axis, people believe that most of the ongoing crises were occasioned by Nigeria’s unending sole dependence on the oil sector. If I must say wholly, in a concise term I would say there are two major factors responsible for all these brouhahas ravaging all facets of our economy. One is that those who are negatively affected by the ongoing antigraft war or whom have perceived a ‘witch-hunt’ vow to make the country ungovernable. The second is that Nigerians are still sceptical over the established notion that President Buhari was the awaited Messiah. The electorate are sceptical over the anticipated actualisation of the 2016 proposed budget. Therefore, the two factors are: the wrong use of opposition in a democratic dispensation as well as scepticism on the part of the electorate. Undoubtedly, in a situation like this, it is the prerogative of everyone to nurture or be entitled to his/her own opinion. But for the interest of Nigeria, we

are not meant to be concerned or bothered over people’s personal opinions. For the administration to be thoroughly described and recognised as a responsible and responsive administration, it must be willing and ready to absorb constructive criticism, which is an inevitable veritable tool in nationbuilding. In the same vein, the administration must be willing to adhere to the rule of law. If anyone detained by the EFCC or the DSS has reached or tendered all the required conditions for bail, he should be released without much ado prior to when next he would needed for further scrutiny or interrogation; it is only the military that does not understand the language of bail. In addition, anyone still in detention that pleads to be allowed to see his doctor abroad or claims to be passing through a severe medical condition, should be allowed to travel but in custody of the DSS, EFCC or ICPC. We must note that the person’s health is very crucial in such situation. More so, the government ought to be prepared to charge accused persons to court because Nigerians cannot wait to witness such scenario. Everyone yearns for pragmatic and tangible approach towards tackling corruption. Corrupt people should not just return the stolen monies and be allowed to

go scourge free; if such tradition is to be upheld, subsequently public office holders would attempt to steal more public funds in their custodies. Regarding the renewed Biafran agitation, I urge the government to handle the matter with extreme diplomacy. It ought to unravel what actually prompted the reemergence of a protest believed to have faded off long ago, after all the aggrieved group in question have a constitutional right to ask for freedom if they feel marginalized; hence they deserve a fair hearing. Thus, the treasonable felony against leader of the IPOB, Mr Nnamdi Kanu should be reviewed in earnest for the interest of Nigeria in its entirety. Above all, the 2016 proposed budget was estimated on the targeted oil benchmark of $38 per barrel but right now, the oil benchmark is already $27 per barrel and it is liable to fall further. This implies that for the budget to be feasible, the government must not compromise every effort targeted towards diversification of the economy. Against this backdrop, I enjoin the government to take the education, health, tourism and agricultural sectors as priorities. The electorate on their part must use civil language while tendering lamentations, criticisms, and commentaries if they truly seek for a salvaged Nigeria.

Can ‘Buharisation’ cause genuine change? (1)

anuary 24, 2015, an idea was born out of the burning desire to contribute to political discussion. The idea was shared, expanded, discussed, modified and eventually metamorphosed into ‘LIGHTHOUSE PATHFINDER NIGERIA’- a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The vision is “To promote good governance through Accountable Leadership for Social Justice”. It was conceived by Mr. Tunde Madehin, a versatile branding professional and the platform administrator. On behalf of the entire members, I congratulate our administrator whose passion for a better Nigeria has brought all of us together. I am also aware that most of us are meeting face to face for the first time even though we have engaged in intense interaction since inception because of the shared passion that brought us together. Perhaps to set the tone for the direction of the Platform agenda, I have been asked to deliver a talk. I came up with the topic of my discussion. I will use ‘Buharisation’ as a concept to explain my observation and perspectives of the President/ APC leadership and the party’s social contract with the electorate. Seven months into the regime, how is the Buhari government translating the political mantra –CHANGE- to tan-

gible/intangible deliverables? What are the expectations of the electorate? How could change be entrenched in the polity? What is Buharisation? Muhammadu Buhari contested for the Presidency in 2003 as candidate of ANPP, and in 2007 and 2011 as that of CPC, but failed on the three occasions. The AC/ACN at the corresponding years also fielded Mamman, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Nuhu Ribadu respectively but also lost. Between the periods, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu started celebrating his birthday anniversaries with the hosting of a colloquium series on provocative political issues, all focused on sensitising the electorate on the efficacy of ‘one man one vote’ concept. The supposed progressives soon realised that without a united front, it might be difficult to dislodge the PDP government. I believe the communiqué of the annual colloquium and the subsequent press analyses unconsciously but effectively had effect on the electorate to the extent that the people became fed up with the PDP and wished for change. Interestingly leaders of the opposition got serious and eventually produced APC in spite of the skepticisms. I believe the intellectual discussions produced the APC mantra ‘CHANGE’ which was widely accepted by the electorate and reinforced with the nomination of Buhari as the party’s presidential candidate in 2014. The APC intelligentsia produced the party’s manifesto, emblem

and mantra that I conceptualise as ‘Buharisation’. At the APC presidential primaries in Onikan stadium on 24th December 2014, Muhammadu Buhari emerged winner and presented his ‘vision and manifesto’ as: 1. Securing our Nation, 2. Prospering our people, 3. Changing Politics and Governance, 4. Security and Conflict Resolution, 5. Economy and Infrastructure Base, 6. Society and Human Capital Development, 7. The Environment. “I, Muhammadu Buhari, have resolved that the task ahead of me is that of Securing our Nation and prospering our people – not looking backward to the failed policies and promises of the past. As I noted before, it is no longer a question of choice but that of the will and courage…I will however warn you all: I cannot do this alone. Each one of you and I must work together to get our economy on the right track; mend our broken lives, infrastructure, institutions, and the overall society…You must help me to reform our rotten political system, by getting involved, taking responsibility, and working together as a team”. I think the birth of the platform is responsive and appropriate to the clarion call of Mr. President for Nigerians to get involved, to take responsibility and work together as a team with the

presidency. At the beginning, By October 1, 2016, Nigeria will be 56 years in existence as a nation. I have read much literature and heard many comments blaming the woes of Nigeria’s frustrated development efforts on the amalgamation of diverse ethnic groups into one multicultural state called Nigeria. That Nigeria is a complex multicultural state made of about 250 different languages or dialects, and divided along religious beliefs with population of 170 million people representing the highest concentration of black people, indicates one of the strengths of the nation. The natural resources, cultural diversity and huge population will no doubt throw up challenges and opportunities. India, America, Egypt, Singapore, and South Africa were also multicultural colonies which had jettisoned pains of servitude to transform to world superpowers, first world economies or emerging economies. As at 2014 the electricity consumption per capita in these counties were 744, 12,954, 1,700, 8,690, 4,405 and for Nigeria 156. Unfortunately, Nigeria is not blessed with visionary men of integrity save for the sacrifice and competitive astuteness of the first generation leaders. Every nation that had a break from the vicious cycle of poverty had national heroes and are blessed with visionary leaders. 70-yr-old bags First Class in Mathematics Since the 5th convocation ceremony of the National Open University (NOUN) in Abuja, recently, men and women of the Nigerian Navy have been beating their chests and walking tall…and they have a worthy reason to so do: Out of the 10,653 graduates churned out by the now famous distance learning institution, one of their own, 70-year-old Rear Admiral Orishamolade Stephen (rtd) was the only one that bagged First Class Degree in Mathematics. Two times (military and civilian) head of state, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo also made an MA in Theology. The surprise didn’t stop there: amongst the grandaunts is 52-yearold grandmother of eight, Alhaja Abdullahi Amina who made first class in Islamic studies and the best graduating student, Udo Effiong from the department of Environmental Science and Resource Management who massed cumulative grade points of 4.71. A breakdown of the list of graduating students showed that 15 students scored first class honours while other class of degrees included 34 from school of agriculture, 1,728 from school of arts, 1,375 from school of education, 2183 from school of health sciences, 283 from law, 3,790 from management sciences, another 1242 from science and technology and 20 from school of lifelong learning. Congratulating Obasanjo and all grandaunts including three traditional rulers, President Muhammadu Buhari directed all universities to make significant contributions towards ensuring the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focuses on Education. Represented by the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission Prof. Julius Okojie, the President added that NOUN has a crucial role to play in actualising the SDG project bothering on quality education. Commending the efforts of NOUN despite the challenges confronting the institution, President Buhari further reiterated government’s support in strengthening the National Open University of Nigeria to fully achieve

THE NIGERIAN THEATRE: Practitioners seek improved infrastructure, govt funding There is no doubt that the theatre, stage performance and plays are reflections of our daily existence and a celebration of who we are as a people. Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva noted recently that theatre plays an ambassadorial and intellectual role in the society either as entertainment or culture.

Another Friday is here, the 4th weekend in the new calendar year. There can be no better time to visit the aged infrastructure and gross inadequate funding of the all important Entertainment industry. Our features desk brings you words from practitioners with agency report. “Theatre encourages more understanding and interaction between the actor and the audience, unlike the screen movies.

The thespian therefore appealed to governments at all levels to put in place policies that would rejuvenate stage and theatre shows. “Our government must put up policies that would make theatres accessible to the art lovers and the people generally,’’ she said. The FCT secretary of the National Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), Jerry Adesewo in his opinion, said stage performance had suffered neglect in recent times. He observed that lack of funding for theatres had made operation of the industry difficult, resulting in the decline in the number of theatres across the country. “The National Theatre

The President specially recognised and congratulated former president of this country and the grand patron of Noun, his Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who has graduated with a master degree in distant learning. The president however enjoined Nigerians to play their individual and collective roles in upholding their common principles of unity, faith, peace and progress in accommodating one another irrespective of tribal, religious, social or economic differences. The Vice Chancellor NOUN, Professor Vincent Tenebe in his remarks, commended President Buhari’s

efforts through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to fast track the infrastructural development of the institution’s permanent site in Abuja. He however raised an alarm over the perceived discrimination against NOUN graduates from gaining access to other relevant forms of education and national services. In this vein, the VC appealed to the Council of Legal Education to emulate other countries of the world and grant NOUN Law graduates an opportunity to proceed to Law School and also be called to bar. “If other countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Tanzania, to mention a few allow their Open Universities’ Law graduates to attend Law school and are called to bar, Nigeria has no justifiable reason to hold her Open University graduates down. We must move forward in all areas as a progressive country,” Professor Tenebe counseled.

In his contribution, another Nollywood actor and stage performer, Patrick Otoro, explained that quality theatrical performances would rekindle the interest in theatre among Nigerians. Otoro further expressed concern about the dilapidated nature of the existing theatres across the country, observing that some of them had been turned to commercial ventures. Calling on the appropriate authority to address some of the challenges in the industry, Mr Isaiah Ilo, a senior lecturer at the University of Abuja, solicited adequate funding from government and donors to promote stage plays and theatre performances. “For stage play to be revived, theatre which produced it should get the revival first,’’ he insisted. Continued from page 19 advised. In his view, Mike Ekunno, a member of NANTAP, said that theatre practitioners had a lot of work to do to revive, develop and sustain the industry across the country. He urged actors and actresses to participate actively in the movie industry as a way of marrying both theatre performance and movies. He said that they could use the opportunity of their roles in Nollywood movies to popularise the theatre plays, soliciting support and funding for the theatre and theatrical performances. Chairman of NANTAP, Chukwuemeka Okereafor said actors and actresses should place more emphasis on dance drama. “Dance drama should be inculcated in school curriculums to explore the creative minds and talents of students. “Most people shy away from dance drama because it is more difficult than drama. Dance requires a maximum intensity of professionalism, both in teaching and delivering. “I believe that people are not interested in it as they ought to be due to the introduction of many dance studios in the society. “However, the introduction of aerobic exercises for fitness purposes has inspired most people to engage in dance drama in some ways,’’ Okereafor said. He advised government and educational bodies to encourage the teaching of dance drama in schools curriculum just like any subjects. In all, theatre professionals insist that given the required funds and logistics, the theatre industry in Nigeria can improve revenue generation and boost the country’s image.

Pam Stenzel, telling her story

My story began fifty years ago, and the beginning of my life was a devastating and horrible experience for a 15 year old teenager. This young girl was living in a foster home for reasons I do not know. Already going through a difficult experience with no family, this teen girl was raped and conceived a child. Abortion was not legal in 1965 and nine months later she delivered a baby girl. That baby girl was me. I was placed for adoption and went to live with my forever family at 5 and a half months old. I am so grateful for the gift of my wonderful family. I am the oldest of eight children, seven of us adopted. We are a colorful family of all ethnicities and I am a richer person for the beautiful blend. I always knew I was adopted. It was never a shameful thing, but a joyous thing for me. I was “adopted”, chosen, special. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I learned from my caseworker that my biological mother was raped and was in foster care at the time of the rape. I struggled with my existence, with God’s plan for my life. I wondered if my mother had received the help and care she needed to get through such a painful and horrible assault on her person. I began to pray daily for her, for her healing and for her soul. I knew in my heart that I wanted to help young women who had to go through such difficult and painful experiences. During my college years I began volunteering for a Crisis Pregnancy Center in downtown Chicago, Illinois. I fell in love with counseling young women and walking with them through their unplanned pregnancy, whether it was a choice they

made or as a result of rape or incest. These women needed help, love, a listening ear, support, a shoulder to weep on and someone to remind them that they could make it through, that this experience would not destroy them. I have since spent over 30 years counseling, and listening to young women in crisis. This experience, as well as empirical evidence from numerous studies, has taught me that what a woman who is raped and becomes pregnant as a result of that rape needs is NOT the further violence of abortion, the death of HER child. What she needs is love, compassion and someone to help her through the pain. She needs someone to help her see the long term con-

It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I learned from my caseworker that my biological mother was raped and was in foster care at the time of the rape. sequences, not the short-sighted immediate gratification. When we are in pain or crisis, our immediate desire is for the pain to end. We do not naturally think about what will be the best for us years down the road, we just want to feel better quickly. The lie of abortion is that killing the child will end the suffering we are experiencing, and although it might alleviate some immediate suffering, the pain it causes months and years down the road is many times worse than the initial pain we were trying to fix. Many of the women I counseled who aborted their babies after rape, either of their own choice or because of pressure from family and others around them, were driven into deep depression and usually ended up self-destructing with drugs and alcohol, promiscuity and self injury. One particular woman I spoke to recently shared her immense pain after her abortion and after years of self destruction now finds herself infertile, unable to ever have children. She shared with me the deep sadness she experiences knowing that the only child she ever conceived, was ripped from her by an abortion. The exact opposite of this pain and self destruction is experienced by women who conceived through rape and incest who chose LIFE for their babies and either placed them with adoptive families or parented these children. I have NEVER met a woman who was raped and gave birth who told me she regrets giving life to her child… not ONE! (And I speak to over 500,000 people every year internationally). Women who give birth to their children who were conceived in rape speak over and over again about how this child “redeemed” their

pain and brought healing to their lives. They speak of how they were able to do something GOOD with the EVIL that was done to them. They did not repay violence with violence, but with great courage met that violence with a tremendous act of love. These women are the most brave and honorable women I have ever met, they are true examples of heroism, of standing up to evil with righteousness and strength. It is often said that we do not know our true character until we are faced with persecution and trial. How we make it through that trial will determine the trajectory of our life. We will either be made stronger or it will destroy us. I have seen both paths, and nothing sets a rape victim onto the path of destruction faster than the death of her child by abortion. Let me be clear, Abortion destroys and kills the child, yes, but it also destroys the life of the mother. The only person who is helped by abortion in the case of rape is the RAPIST. Period. If you want to help a woman who has been raped, then lover her, offer her assistance for her body and her soul, walk with her through the difficult time ahead and be there as she eventually holds redemption in her arms. If you want to further destroy a woman who has been brutally raped, than rip open her cervix and violently cut apart the life growing in her womb and leave her alone and bleeding on a cold surgical table. As for me, I choose redemption, I choose life and I am so grateful that my birthmother chose life for me 50 years ago. Redeemed, Pam Stenzel, M.A.

Armsgate: Olisa Metuh regains freedom Andrew Orolua Abuja

ÎÎÎEmbattled National Pub-

licity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, has regained his freedom. Metuh is facing trial over alleged N400 million fraud. A picture of the Metuh taken after his release which was sent to social media by the PDP director of new media, Deji Adeyanju, showed the PDP spokesman felicitating with friends after his release. Earlier in the day, the case of money laundering proffered against Metuh and his company, Destra Investment Limited, continued on Thursday before Justice Okon Abang of

…Two witnesses explain how they laundered money for him

the Federal High Court with two more witnesses testifying. At the resumed hearing on Thursday, being led in evidence by lawyer to the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC), Sylvanus Tahir, one Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, who is the Managing Director of CMC Connect Ltd, a Public Relations consultant testified that he was awarded the consultancy job for the PDP after an exhibition he held before former president, Goodluck Jonathan in December, 2014. Badejo-Okusanya told the court that he received the sums of N7.5 million and N70 million on December 1,2014 and December 15,2014 respectively.

Also testifying, one Ibrahim Kabiru, a Bureau De Change operator told the court that he received the sum of $1 million from one Nneka Ararume, who is the Assets and Resource Management’s (ARM) portfolio manager for Metuh’s company, Destra Investments Limited. Being cross examined by Metuh’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), Kabiru told the court that he was not aware of the foreign exchange limit by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). At the last sitting, January 27, 2016, Eno Mfon Efiong, a staff of Diamond Bank Plc and an account officer of the

defendant, who testified as the 4th prosecution witness confirmed to the court, a credit transaction from the Office of the National Security Adviser into Destra Investment Limited account. Metuh is being tried for allegedly receiving N400 million (four hundred million naira) from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), who is also being tried for laundering $2.1 billion meant for arms procurement. Documents in support of his claim including documents containing evidence of payments for different placements of advertorials of PDP in vari-

ous media were tendered and admitted as exhibits. Testifying, Ibrahim (Prosecution Witness 6) also told the court that, he was given the sum of $1 million to change and pay into the account of Destra Investment Limited, a sum whose naira equivalent amounted to N103m (one hundred and three million naira). The prosecution has so far produced four witnesses who had given their various testimonies against the embattled PDP spokesmen, detailing how huge sums of money were received and transferred to Destra Investment Limited, a company allegedly belonging to Metuh.

Appeal Lagos Division, on Thursday, reserved judgement in an appeal filed by a former beauty queen, Ibinabo Fiberesima, challenging the judgement of a Lagos High Court which sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment for the death of one Dr. Giwa Suraj. Fiberesima was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by a Lagos High Court for reckless driving which caused the death of one Dr. Giwa Suraj in an auto accident on the LekkiEpe Expressway, Lagos. The deceased was a staff of one of Lagos State’s hospitals. The appellate court presided over by Justice U.I. Ndukwe-Anyanwu (Mrs.), reserved judgement in the appeal after counsel adopted their written addresses. The court also directed that the appellant (Fiberesima) who was not in court to appear in court when judgement is to be delivered, adding that the date would be communicated to the parties. Fiberesima had earlier been awarded a N100, 000 fine by an Igbosere Magistrate Court, but the then Lagos State AttorneyGeneral and Commissioner of justice, Supo Sasore (SAN), felt unsatisfied with the judgement. This prompted the state government to take its case to the Lagos High Court. At the Lagos High Court, Justice Oluwayemi set aside the option of fine imposed by the Magistrate Court and sentenced Fiberesima to five years imprisonment for dangerous and reckless driving.

Anambra earmarks N2bn to restrict trucks’ movement Nkiru Nwagbo, Awka

ÎÎÎThe Anambra State Gov-

ernment has reaffirmed its determination to restrict articulated vehicles from plying its roads between the hours of 6a.m. and 7 p.m. to prevent road accidents. The Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Ejikeme, who disclosed this to the Daily Times, on Thursday, in his office, in Awka, said that the state had earmarked N2 billion to build truck parks at four sites in the state to enable it enforce the order in no distance time. He said the parks would be constructed in Onitsha, Amoka- Ihiala Local Government

Area, Ogbunka in Orumba South Local Government Area, and Amansea in Awka North local Government Area. Ejikeme said that Governor Willie Obiano had wanted the order to be enforced this month but for logistics challenges. He explained that the Attorney- General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Anali Chude, had perfected a bill in that direction to the state House of Assembly to give the restriction legal teeth. It would be recalled that the decision was prompted by the fatal accident involving articulated vehicles in the state . On one occasion, no fewer

than 65 persons were burnt to death in a fell swoop in Onitsha in such a circumstance. Ejikeme said that upon perfection of the arrangements, the state would go tough on any truck that contravened the law. He said such vehicles would be impounded and made to pay a stipulated fine, or the driver sent to prison as the case might be. On the controversy trailing the state mass transit scheme, he said that only dishonest persons were complaining about it. He restated that the scheme was meant to empower the youth and not for jamboree as certain individuals had thought.

Some beneficiaries of the state mass transport scheme had recently expressed dissatisfaction with the way the scheme was being run, accusing government’s agents managing in a manner that was far from clean.

Corporate Racism

… a real threat to South Africa and Southern African Development Community’s security

Udo W.

Froese ÏÏÏ South Africa’s senior government circles seem seriously worried of social and political attrition after the recent collapse of the Rand currency. Investigative writer, Barry Sergeant documented in his book, “The Assault on the Rand – Kevin Wakeford and the battle to save a Currency”, that the collapse of the Rand in 2001/2 was described then as “a financial crisis of epic proportions”.” A senior and reliable source from within the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) points out: “The 2002 story of the collapse of the Rand currency is being repeated all over again in 2015 and 2016.” “The very same corporate interests and Rand hedged stocks are in the process of implementing a strategy that will cause a collapse in the value of the Rand. In doing so, those treasonous collusions will boost the myopic and opportunistically narrow business interests, while the rest of the region’s citizenry witness their little wealth and dispos-

able income erode beyond recognition,” a senior stockbroker and economic advisor explained under the condition of anonymity. It directly affects the currencies of Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland. British ‘Barclays Bank Africa Plc’ and its South African banking subsidiary, ‘Amalgamated Banks of South Africa’ (ABSA) with Maria Ramos at the helm, wife of former Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel, and the US banker, ‘Goldman Sachs’ headed by Colin Coleman, stand accused of undermining South Africa’s currency value, having contributed to the sharp fall of the Rand. Meanwhile, banks, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), certain ANC members, the media and academics blame President Jacob Zuma for the fall of the Rand. The ANC Youth League countered, accusing the British Barclays Bank Africa Plc and the US Goldman Sachs of collusion to collapse South Africa’s sovereign currency. ANC Youth League spokesperson, Mlondi Mkhize stated at a media conference, “South Africa has become a target of the anti-BRICS countries. British Barclays Bank Plc is shrewd in keeping attention from itself.” The massive outflow of capital assisted the fall of the Rand. This is not always determined by normal trade developments, but caused by conscious decisions made by influential financiers, driven by a racist approach to the economy, also known as

Afropessimism. It finally resulted in grand apartheid’s structured poverty. Young Caucasian males have a racist, anti-Africa view in the world of finance. With the slightest ripple from Africa, they hedge against the Rand, meaning, selling the Rand. US-Goldman Sachs and British Barclays Bank Africa Plc instigated a “herd mentality” against the Rand, hedging and selling the currency. The same globalist bankers reasoned in 2001 that it was Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe and his ruling party ZANU-PF’s “land grab”, which caused the Rand to fall. But, even before Zimbabwe’s land issue had taken off, the Rand was knocked. Interestingly, the ‘Rand Commission of Inquiry’ into the fall of the Rand caused the currency to bounce back from R13.85 per US$1 to R5.50 per US$1 and that before Zimbabwe’s land issue was in full swing. In a globalist new economic world order context, South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma, sacked his former minister of finance, Nene, and appointed the unknown Van Rooyen. But, that appointment lasted only four days. Former finance minister Pravin Gordhan was re-appointed as minister of finance. This incident showed that the president listens to his senior party officials and makes the necessary changes. It should be viewed as “democracy-atwork”. However, rightwing Afropessimistic elements intensified the war-of-attrition against Zuma. This could have seri-

ous implications not only for South Africa, but also for sub-Saharan Africa. A scenario of a so-called “perfect storm” is being created. Food rights are being undermined. The ‘Rand Commission’ of 2002 should be reinstituted to give its former members, Gunshaw and Myburgh, the opportunity to rebuild their tarnished reputation, as they suffered much embarrassment by simply not doing their investigative work decently. Not a single arrest was made. It is Gunshaw and Myburgh’s shoddy work that stands to be blamed for the continuation of the delinquent behavior within the market with impunity. South Africa desperately needs to institute market scrutiny through its regulators such as the Reserve Bank as regulator of the country’s currency; the Financial Services Board, commonly known as FSB, which works on a voluntary basis with laws that give it teeth. Then there are the Commercial Crimes Unit

and the Intelligence Unit of SARS. All of them have the powers to assist monitoring and correcting the current devaluation of the Rand. In 2002 a rightwing element mobilized for a coup against the ANC-led government. They were caught in time. Many of them still serve their jail sentence for treason. Senior economic observers and a retired general of the SANDF, who spoke under the condition of anonymity explain, “This time around, South Africans are made to suffer again from a dangerous deception. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are led by a “commander-in-chief”, Julius Malema, wearing red berets, military attire, masquerading as “freedom fighters”, fighting a “revolution”, mobilising against government and its structures. “Fees must fall”, “Zuma must fall” and other such calls are advertised nationwide. The EFF did not organise the uprisings. It arrived opportunistically when those mass marches started and recruited students and youth also outside these organisations. South Africa can’t afford lawlessness.” The above would seem like the “preparations for a perfect storm, where ordinary people out of sheer hardship rise up against the scapegoat, the ANC. Certain forces use Zuma’s bad sentiment against him and harness the angry and poor in a drive to unleash national destabilisation. It seems that conditions would be rife for a counterrevolution.” The above development

is similar to the uprisings in Nicaragua in the early mid-1980s. The US-CIA had backed the Contras, trained them as counter-revolutionaries, having destroyed the real revolution. The Contras then took over power. One of South Africa’s leading economists explained: “At the moment, the Rand has lost a third of its value within a few weeks. The end-result depends on what happens to the Rand. Every single citizen is affected. It is like HIV and Aids. All goods in South Africa are US Dollar denominated. Thirty percent of the Rand value is taken off the top of the medical aid funds, insurance funds and pension funds. Everyone’s wealth is measured in US Dollars. The mentioned developments will materialize in national unrests leading to the local government elections this year in 2016. It could affect the entire continent.” South Africa should seek help from its BRICS partners for protection against the attacks on its economy. BRICS know what is happening and they know what is going to happen. A friend in need is a friend indeed. The imperialist West has repeatedly and reliably shown its brutal hand of exploitation and plunder of South Africa and Africa’s resources. It is not South Africa’s friend. Udo W. Village demolition: Soyinka asks government to compensate artists Agozino Agozino Few weeks after the demolition of the National Council for Arts and Culture Artists’ Village, located in a section of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos the affected artists are still in shock to see what they laboured for over the years go down the drain. You could can see the pain, anguish, sadness written on their faces when Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka played the role of saving grace at a press conference which had in attendance artists affected by the demolition at Freedom Park, Lagos Island. Prof. Soyinka disclosed that he also extended invitation to the General Manager of National Theatre, Mallam Kabiru Yusuf Yar’ Adua, but he did not show up neither a representative. During the event the concerned artists through the Coordinator, NCAC Artists’ Village Mr. Aremo Tope Babayemi called for the immediate removal of Yusuf Yar’ Adua. “ That the Honourable Minister of Information should as a matter of urgency, remove Kabiru Yusuf Yar’ Adua from office as he has become an embarrassment to the current Administration,” he said. “The Nigerian Culture Sector is already in deep crisis as a result of a lack of leadership and direction from the Public Sector. Yusuf Yar’ Adua must be prevented from further demonstrating vestiges of misrule which characterised the last Administration.” The affected artists also prayed that the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture makes good on his promise regarding injuries to affected residents and damages to property, “that temporary accommodation be provided for artists whose structures have been demolished pending compensation and rebuilding of such structures. The offices of the National Film Corporation (NFC) and the Centre for Black Arts and Africa Civilization (CBAAC) at the National Theatre are vacant. We implore the Honourable Minister to use his good offices to relocate the displaced artists and their materials and works to these offices; that the Honourable Minister takes active steps to stop Kabiru Yusuf Yar Adua from further preventing the National Council for Arts and Culture from carrying out her statutory obligations to artists and the arts community.” Soyinka also declared that it is not because artists were involved that human right had to intervene, but because, “we are taking about human being and respect for what the people has laboured for; their means of livelihood,” he said. Nobel laureate reiterated that the ac-

I have my own inside knowledge on a number of things. l was visited by some of the inhabitants. I promised that l will contact the Minister and encourage him to convene a stakeholder meeting with the occupants of the National Theatre including the public sector, government officials so that we all know what is happening in that place,”he said. “ Mr. Babayemi further disclosed that the demolition is used by Yusuf Yar’ Adua in settling old scores. “It is important to inform at this point that Kabiru hide behind the orders of the Honourable Minister to settle old scores with a community of artists that stood staunchly against the plans of the last administration to privatise or concession off the management of the National Theatre of Nigeria,” he said. It was gathered that later that day after the demolition, the Honorable Minister for Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed came to the National Theatre and reassure the resident artists of the NCAC Artists Village that the injured will get

support for their treatment in hospital, while the legitimate residents will be duly compensated for damage done to their structures. “The Minister confirmed that he asked Kabiru to demolish shanties at the back of the Artists’ Village along the canal that has been a route for miscreants and not arts studios and structures in the NCAC Artists’ Village,” Babayemi said. Recalling the invasion exercise, Babayemi noted that the padlock and chain used to lock the gate were broken and Kabiru entered the premises with his demolition squad. “The noise generated by the forceful entry attracted the attention of the residents who watched as Kabiru and his team which included ‘thespians’ such as Steph Ogundele and Biodun Abe, ordered the demolition of arts and dance studios, galleries and restaurants servicing the community. Some of the demolished structures belonged to the NCAC whilst others built by artists had approval of the NCAC,” he said. Continuing Babayemi said the resident arts, practitioners who represent some of the best in practice in the Nigerian

culture scene had no prior notice of the exercise and, “our landlord, the NCAC was not informed. Kabiru carried out his vindictive demolition without allowing the artistes and business owners the opportunity to salvage artworks and belongings and as a result caused extensive damage to property and valuables. It was truly tragic to see Government officials who have been statutory responsibility to promote and develop the arts and culture brutalizing artists and destroying government property with impunity. It was indeed a clear manifestation of the misrule that Nigerians have been subjected to in recent years.”

New book links Yoruba ancestry to Israel A new book by Dr Olapade Agoro retraces the ancestry of Yoruba race to Israel. Public intellectual Adewale Oshodi offers a review Many researches have been done on the real origin of the Yoruba people of South West Nigeria, as well as those in other West African states, but this discourse is just about to get more interesting as Dr Olapade Agoro, a religious leader, traditional ruler, educationist and frontline politician, has delved into the fray with the publication of his book, Yoruba (Yehhuba): Factual of a People’s Anthropogenesis. In Dr Agoro’s submission, the claims that Yoruba people fell from heaven, or migrated from Saudi Arabia are all false, but in actual fact, this tribe descended from Jewish ancestry, and the tribe’s name in Hebrew, the language of the Jews is “Yehhuba” which has changed over the generations into Yoruba. “It hurts for one to mention that the most twisted and inconsistent history of mankind is that of the Yoruba people. There are lots of misplaced facts spread about Yoruba history and historical background, making fallacy ground for mischief makers to fool around with. “A careful study based on pure conviction for facts establishment and for posterity to benefit from reveals that almost all of the existing Yoruba history on the book shelves globally is bound on maladaptive.” (P3) In starting the research, Dr Agoro explains the interconnectivity of the Atapami people --- Atakpame in Togo, Atapami people of Igbo ‘Tapa (Igbo Atapami) in Ile-Ife, Omoowa ‘Tapa in Itapa-Ekiti, Atapami in Itapa-Ijesa, Atakpa people of Ibibio, Atakpa people in Benin Republic, ‘Tapa people in Nupeland, among others, saying that all these people must have relativity connection beyond ordinary geographical placement. The author believes that the Atapami, Atakpame, Atakpa, Itapa or ‘Tapa people all have connections to Israel, and that they had moved from the land of the

Agoro

In linking the Yoruba and the Jews, the book further highlights the traditional correlative values of eight-day child naming, while also giving Biblical examples of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, who were both named on the eighth day Jews to Ethiopia, down to Nigeria, Benin, Togo, before spreading across the world to Cuba and the Latin America, particularly Brasil. Apart from his own research, Dr Agoro also identifies a very important research finding by Jide Uwechia (The Yorubas and other Canaanite/ Isrealites of Nigeria), Which states that: “Yoruba and the neighbouring nationalities have this oral tradition of an origin extraneous to West Africa.”

He also cites the research, Hugh Clapperton’s 1820 work, which claims Sultan Ahmadu Bello, Caliph of the Sokoto Empire, admitting that “the Yorubas were descended from Canaanite tribe from Palestine.” This claim is also made by Samuel Johnson around 1880 that the Yoruba descended from Lamurudu, the father of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race. Lamurudu, according to Dr Agoro’s research, is Nimrod in Hebrew, and

World’s richest man turns to art with Mexico museum The world’s richest man Carlos Slim inaugurated a massive museum in Mexico City recently to house his eclectic collection of art ranging from preHispanic pieces to sculptures by French masters. The museum opened recently saw some 1,500 guests ranging toured the asymmetrical building that has been opened to the public. Located in the heart of one of the capital’s poshest residential areas, the Soumaya museum named after Slim’s late wife host some 60,000 pieces in six exhibit rooms, making it one of the biggest in Latin America.

Slim, worth $53.5 billion according to Forbes magazine, made his fortune in telecommunications and now controls retail stores, mining and oil drilling firms. He credits his wife Soumaya, who died in 1999, for giving him his interest in art. The museum will be home to one of the world’s most important collections of Auguste Rodin’s sculptures and also prominently displays works by Mexican muralists Rufino Tamayo and Diego Rivera. Designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero, Slim’s son-in-law, the building is covered with of thousands of hexagonal aluminum panels that reflect sunlight.

Slim

he was the first king of Mesopotamia. Johnson’s book, The History of the Yoruba, was not published until 1923. The book also explores the story of the Iberian Jews of Yoruba nationality. These people, Bnai Ephraim, or children of Ephraim, came from Morocco after the Jews were banished from the Iberian peninsula around 1492. These people speak a dialect that is a mixture of Moroccan Arabic, Yoruba and Aramaic, and were known as Emo YoQuaim, or strange people. Thousands of these black refugee Jews of Iberia resettled in the environs of Lagos, Porto Novo, as well as Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome, either as slaves or outlaws. Some groups eventually made it deeper inland. “In actual fact, Yoruba is an age long Hebrew word, Yehhuba, which has been bastardised and mispronounced for generations after generations.” The author, however, didn’t stop at that, he uses Biblical references to back up his claims that Yoruba people are Jews who had to leave Israel because they could not deviate from their worship of their own god, Ifa, which is Ivah in Hebrew. In the book of 1 Chronicles 7 verse 34, the Bible records the Yoruba people as Jehubbah, but the letter ‘J’ is pronounced as ‘Y’ in Hebrew, and in order to further convince the people about this, the author draws out a list of common Yoruba and Hebrew words which have the same meaning. Dr Agoro is also able to link the Yoruba Oduduwa with the Hebrew Hodaviah using Biblical references. The research states that the Yoruba god of Ivah (Ifa) was among the gods of the tribe of Manasseh, which the family of Hodaviah (Oduduwa) went worshipping instead of the God of Isreal. This was the reason the Yehhuba people were expelled from Israel. In linking the Yoruba and the Jews, the book further highlights the traditional correlative values of eight-day child naming, while also giving Biblical examples of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, who were both named on the eighth day. The culture of paying obeisance to elders/ superiors also links the Yoruba and Jews. This research, therefore, debunks the claims of some commentators that “Yoruba has no meaning in language that is known to man, and as well as where Yoruba indeed came from.” This 31-chapter book also focuses on other aspects of Yoruba culture and traditions, with special focus on religious and traditional rulers. With this work, Dr Agoro has contributed in no small measure to the raging debate about the true origin of the Yoruba people. The book, Yoruba Hebrew Translatable “Yehhuba” Factual of A peoples’ Anthropogenesis is therefore, a must read for scholars, researchers, students of History and language, and all Yoruba people who had been living in a state of confusion as to how the Yoruba tribe came to be.

Frustrated Sahle set to quit Ibex

E

thiopia Walia Ibex coach Yohannes Sahle has hinted of stepping down from his position as Head coach of the national team after what he referred to as “frustrations”. Speaking in Rwanda where his team participated in the ongoing African Nations Championship and were knocked out in the first round, Sahle said he felt tired and that

his position was no longer tenable from things he had experienced back at home and in the tournament. “I feel my position as coach of Ethiopia is not tenable and I will have to go back home to Ethiopia to make an informed decision as I feel I am done after so many frustrations as the helm of the team with no one acknowledging our efforts.

“It has not been easy at all. Imagine qualifying for CHAN within three months of taking over the team and yet giants like Algeria, Egypt and even defending champions Libya never qualified. This means we gave our best to be among the last 16 to qualify for the tournament. “Our preparations ahead of CHAN were not the best.”

There is no doubt that sports has graduated from sheer determination and skill to science. Nigeria’s sports cannot remain stagnant and expect to cope with the dynamics of modern sports. This is the area we will wish the University of Port Harcourt to be a key partner,” Dalung stated. Dalung pledged government’s continuous support to the University of Port Harcourt in ensuring that all necessary facilities that will lead to the attainment of a modern

and functional High Performance Center is realized despite the paucity of funds. “For a High Performance Center to be effective, it must be housed in an academic environment, because it is not only for training but there are also curricula that are associated with it. After my visit, you may guide in taking a proper decision as to what should be the status of a national High Performance Center in Nigeria,” he said. In his response, the Vice Chancellor Prof Lale extolled the University as a citadel of sports excellence in the country adding that they were grateful to have the High Performance Center cited in the institution. Dalung visited the High Performance Center, students’ hostel, dinning area and held a private meeting with the athletes.

eorge Lwandamina says Zambia’s lackluster performance in their final Group D match against Mali on Wednesday was down to lack of motivation. Zambia came into the match with their quarterfinal qualification already secured with a game in hand on maximum six points from their opening two Group D matches. Mali pummeled Zambia for 90 minutes but Chipolopolo kept their shape to finish 0-0 en-route to this weekend’s quarterfinals. The result also saw Zambia maintain their Group D superiority at the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) to finish unbeaten on 7 points heading into the knockout round. “It was a psychological game even a coach can only do as much for his players,” Lwandamina said. “The players themselves got affected psychologically

in their minds with qualification ready secured. It was the most difficult game.” Zambia struggled to get a decent shot on goal throughout the 90 minutes. Furthermore, Zambia goalkeeper Jacob Banda was the busier of the men between the posts. Banda parried Aliou Dieng’s fiery volley in the 27th minute on the near post and he was back in action in the 34th minute when he struggled to collect a rasping shot from Lassana Samake. There was very little goalmouth action after the break although Mali gave Zambia a fright in the 78th minute when Sekou Koita cut past two defenders but sent his rocketing shot across Banda’s posts’.

ambia Chipolopolo forward Christopher Katongo is definitely proving his critics wrong with inspirational performances which have seen Zambia storm to the quarterfinals at the ongoing African Nations Championship in Rwanda. Katongo’s lone strike against the Cranes of Uganda in Rubavu earlier was enough to earn Zambia a well deserved victory as he helped his team to a deserved 0-0 draw in the last group game against Mali at the Regional Stadium in Nyamirambo. His inclusion in the CHAN squad together with his fellow veteran counterpart Isaac Chansa raised a lot of eyebrows from footballing experts and analysts on various sports programs aired on Zambia’s Television and radio stations but after his performance at the CHAN 2016 his critics have become his praise masters suddenly changing tune. “I am happy with the team’s performance at the CHAN 2016 we have played as a unit and we have been hard to beat at all levels. igeria coach Sunday Oliseh has claimed he has had to spend his own money to keep the Super Eagles going at the CHAN. Oliseh squarely blamed the non-payment of allowances and bonuses for his team’s shock exit from CHAN 2016, arguing team morale hit an all-time low. He claimed he spent $4,000 to improve the team’s food in their pre-tournament training camp in Pretoria, South Africa. “I spent $4,000 to feed the team because the food in camp was not good enough. I used my personal funds to get the team going for the interest of the nation,” he said on Thursday in an interview on radio. “We are family men who have been working hard for 50 days, but who couldn’t afford to buy a Coca-Cola. It was unbearable! “And now they are going back home with nothing to give to their families.” Oliseh disclosed he will head back to his base in Belgium to continue his medication after he picked up a virus in Port Harcourt last year. frican football legend and Camerounian ex-international, Roger Milla, has heaped praise on the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) saying the standards and level of football had gone up since the last edition hosted by South Africa in 2014. Speaking at Huye in Butare the legend spoke highly of the organisers describing Rwanda as having done an exemplary job to organise the tournament. He praised the infrastructure as the group stages came to an end. “I am really delighted at the level of organisation and the high standards of football at CHAN 2016 as they have improved tremendously since the last edition in 2014. Teams have been in high spirits and we have seen beautiful football being played with urgency making the tournament more interesting and unpredictable.

“The level of attendance has also been very encouraging as most matches have seen fully packed stadiums and that is why football becomes even better and more enjoyable,” Milla said. Prodded to give his sentiments on his thoughts about the tournament vis-a-vis the main African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Milla was very positive and optimistic. “When CAF started the tournament not everybody embraced it but now its grown in stature and you will accept that the interest from all the competing countries is a notch higher together with many clubs and scouts coming in search of new players, its amazing place for the locallybased players to showcase their skills” On who he thought would win the competition Milla was lost for words as he said with the level of competition seen in the 2016 tournament it would be difficult to predict the winner

wanda’s Amavubi will look to bag a win as they clash against DRC in a 2016 CAF African Nations Championships (CHAN) quarterfinal match on Saturday. The hosts, Rwanda, will hope to keep their good record intact in the tournament as they finished as Group A winners with six points having lost one and won two. Under the guidance of Coach Johnny McKintsry, the Rwandans seem to have turned the corner and are heading in the right direction to becoming a force to be reckoned with in continental football. They managed to beat Michel Dussuyer’s Cote d’Ivoire and Gabon before losing to Morocco. However, going to the knockout stages, they will hope to get a win over the Leopards. “This is probably the most difficult opponent we could have faced. DR Congo have started the tournament in scintillating form; and despite our 1-0 win in a preCHAN friendly,” said McKinstry. “It was clear from that game in Rubavu that DRC would be one of the favourites for the tournament from the way they played.”

latan Ibrahimovic’s agent Mino Raio la has dismissed suggestions that the Paris Saint-Ge rmain striker has been handed a hefty pay rise. A report claimed the Ligue 1 champion s had rewarded the 34-year-old with a €700,000 salary increase last month to take his monthly wage to €1.5 milli on before taxes. However, Ibrahimovic’s representativ e has made it clear the Sweden international’s contract has not been improved, stressing there has not been a mee ting with the club to negotiate a raise. “I have never given any figures in the press, but I can tell you that what’s been mentioned is entirely wrong,” Raiola told reporters. “We have not touched Zlatan’s cont ract. I did not go to Qatar this winter and Zlatan has never discussed his contracts with his clubs directly duri ng the 12 years we have worked together. “We met with the PSG hierarchy in Doha last summer and Zlatan did not ask for anything beca use he is happy with his existing deal.” Ibrahimovic’s existing contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but he has yet to mak e a final decision on his future. “All I can say is that Zlatan is very happ y at PSG, but only Zlatan knows what will happen,” Raio la added. “We have a great relationship with PSG and they know we will make a decision on his future toge ther. “We will discuss everything with PSG . We will not cause a war for no reason. They have alwa ys behaved very well toward Zlatan.”

est Ham are closing on a loan deal to sign striker Emmanuel Emenike from Fenerbahce by the weekend, says manager Slaven Bilic. Bilic wants the Nigeria international, who has scored seven goals in 11 games for UAE side Al Ain this season, to boost his attacking options for the Premier League run-in. Emenike is currently on loan from Fenerbahce, however, and the deal is being held up due to negotiations with the Turkish club. “We are still waiting for that, it’s a complicated situation,” said Bilic. “Al Ain called me and basically we thought we could do a straight swap with them, but now we are talking to Fenerbahce, and we will see what happens. “At the beginning it looked easy, between two clubs, but then when we had to deal with Fenerbahce, who are a third party. helsea ar e on the verge of completing the signing of New York Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga, according to sources. The 20-year-old centre-back is highly rated in Major League Soccer and he will fly to London before Saturday to wrap up a £3.5m move. Any transfer should be made easier with Miazga not requiring a work permit because he owns a Polish passport.

Miazga

He has grabbed the headlines in the United States having already played under Jurgen Klinsmann for the national team and during the last MLS season scored against cross-city rivals New York City FC. Miazga is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in American football having made his mark on the international stage at last summer’s U20 World Cup. He has also represented the United States at the U18 and U23 levels. It seems Chelsea have beaten off competition in the Premier League with Leicester and Stoke being reported in the United States at the end of last year to have been interested in the 6ft 4in defender. The news may be of concern to defender Gary Cahill, who has struggled to cement his first-team spot under new manager Guus Hiddink.

aheem Sterling insists it will be “strictly business” when Manchester City take on his former club Liverpool in the Capital One Cup final. Sterling, who completed a protracted £49m move from Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium last summer, helped City overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg to run out 4-3 winners on aggregate and seal their place at Wembley. When asked whether he will be exchanging messages with some of his former colleagues ahead of the Wembley showdown on February 28 - Sterling said he will be fully focused on picking up his first piece of silverware in a City shirt. “I might get one or two text messages but it’s strictly business when it comes to Wembley,” Sterling told reporters. “This is what I’ve wanted to do. I’ve come here and I’m lucky enough to be in a final. “Well done to Liverpool as well. They’ve got into a final. We’ll meet in the final and may the best team win on the day.” Sterling was involved in a controversial moment when the ball appeared to be over the dead-ball line before his cut-back allowed Kevin De Bruyne to score City’s second goal. While the England international admitted his side may have been fortunate, he thought they deserved their luck after being denied a late penalty in the first leg. “I was only interested in the ball hitting the back of the net,” he added. “I wasn’t looking if it was out or not. “The most important thing is we got the luck this time. “Last time we didn’t get a penalty, this time it might have been out or not, but the most important thing is we scored and won the game.”

The 23-year-old has scored 10 goals in 29 games this season, and 11 in 56 international appearances for Nigeria. Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri is keen to beef up his team’s firepower as they prepare for the possibility of Champions League football next season. But it is understood that Leicester, who sit three points clear at the top of the Premier League with 15 matches remaining, are not prepared to meet CSKA’s £18m valuation. Meanwhile, reports have revealed that Leicester have ended their interest in Sampdoria forward Eder. The fee of around £10m was not thought to be an issue between the clubs, but the player has revealed he wants to stay in Italy to further his Euro 2016 chances, favouring instead a move to Inter Milan.

reluctance to sign EPAs Ambassador of European Union (EU) to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mitchel Arrion, on Wednesday in Abuja questioned Nigeria’s decision not to sign the Economic Partnership Agreements long after the initiative was formally launched in February 2014 after over ten years of negotiations. Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) are trade and development agreements negotiated between the EU and African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) partners engaged in regional economic integration processes, aimed at promoting trade and investment, sustainable development and poverty reduction. Nigeria, at various stages in the EPA negotiation process, had voiced strong opposition to the agreement and raised concerns that the Agreement could only lead to de-industrialization in West Africa, with serious economic and employment consequences for Nigeria because of her 60 percent share of the CONTINUED ON PAGE B2

Ambiguity in CBN’s N50 stamp duties circular may delay compliance-BCAN Motolani Oseni Following the recent directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that banks operating in the country should begin to charge N50 as Stamp Duties on some transactions, Bank Customers Association of Nigeria (BCAN) has said that ambiguity in the apex bank’s circular might delay compliance. The apex bank recently directed all deposits money banks (DMBs) and other financial institutions to commence the charging of N50 per eligible transaction in accordance with the provisions of the Stamp Duties Act and Federal Government Financial Regulations 2009, that is, all receipts by any bank or other financial institutions in acknowledgement of services rendered in respect of electronic transfer and teller deposits from N1,000 and above. According the CBN’s circular, for the avoidance of doubt, the following receipts are however exempted from imposition of Stamp Duties: Payments deposits or transfer by self to whether inter or intra bank, and any form of withdrawal/transfer from savings accounts. “It should be noted that these charges are only payable by receiving accounts,” the circular CONTINUED ON PAGE B2

Kankarofi

APCON needs N350m to monitor advertising — APCON boss Godwin Anyebe Registrar of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Alhaji Bello Kankarofi has said the body saddled with the responsibility of vetting advertising in Nigeria would need the sum of three hundred and fifty million naira to monitor advertising effectively in Lagos and Ibadan. Kankarofi who disclosed this yesterday while addressing the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in Lagos said APCON has about six thousand channels to monitor in Nigeria which could not be done manually. He therefore appealed to the minister to come to the aid of the regulating agency for the interest of Nigeria at large. While highlighting the challenges facing the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), he stated that, “a lot of people don’t understand what we do, more often than not some people misunderstood us for Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), or the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN). Meanwhile, what we do he continued, is controlling advertis-

ing so that the larger society will not be misled, and also the accreditation of advertising curriculum in Nigeria tertiary institutions.” According to him, APCON also has issues with accommodation, technical equipment and funding, adding that, “At a time, we were thrown out of national budget, but when we were later accommodated, what was meant for us was only to pay salaries, he noted. Reacting to development, Mohammed said that, “APCON is not only a key parastatal to the Federal Ministry of Information, but a catalyst of growth to national economy. The body is a regulatory agency and also an institution, he added.” According to him, the task on them to be able to execute their mandate is enormous, they need both personnel and resources, because you don’t expect them to continue to do things manually at this era of technology if they are to enhance interpersonal relationship, ensure there is unity in Nigeria, among others. The Minister however promised that government would do everything possible to ensure that APCON was taken to the next level.

regional market and 77 percent contribution to the sub-region’s GDP. In the same vein, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) opposition is also premised on the fact that from all parameters, West African states, including Nigeria are not at the same level of economic development with any European country to warrant the conclusion of a reciprocal trade relationship espoused in the trade agreement with EU. MAN therefore advised that notwithstanding the status of EPA and ECOWAS Common External Tariff CET, Nigeria should continue to insist on the incorporation of the 196 tariff lines which the country had earlier recommended for reclassification in the CET regime in addition to the urgent need to design appropriate instruments that will take care of the 24 tariff lines that currently enjoy various levels of levies as protective measures in Nigeria. The EPAs intend to support trade diversification by shifting ACP countries’ reliance on commodities to higher-value products and services, especially at a time that Nigeria is desperately finding ways to move away from over-reliance on oil in spite of its falling prices and lower revenues for the country. For agricultural products or finished consumer goods that are currently produced in the region or for which the region plans to develop production capacity, West Africa will not need to reduce its import duties. The market access offer for West Africa liberalizes 75 percent of tariff lines only at the end of the transition period, meaning that 20 years after the entry into force of the EPA, 25 percent of tariff lines will remain the same as for all third world countries. According to data from the European Commission, West Africa accounts for more than 38 percent of total trade between the EU and all the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions. Trade with ACP countries represents more than five percent of EU imports and exports, with Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria accounting for 80 percent of West Africa’s exports to the EU.

said. Commenting on the development, president of BCAN, Dr. Uju Ogunbunka, said bank customers still need to understand clearly what the circular of the CBN is all about because some people have stressed that there is a bit of ambiguity in it and there was need for them to understand clearly what they expected to do, such that if there is misinterpretation of the law, they will be able to know and find way to address such misinterpretation. He explained that customers of banks that are members of BCAN were willing to obey the law, provided they are guided where the law actually specifies the amount to be paid, in such a way that will not curse confusion, and people will be able to comply. Where there is confusion or ambiguity, it will delay people from complying. According to him, the first thing for us to do is to explain to bank customers and the general public what exactly the law is saying and what they are expected to do, while some people have already expressed their opinions that the circular by the CBN has some issues that need to be resolved.

“Although, BCAN executive will be meeting soon to look at the circular and perhaps get copy of the law and the outcome of the meeting will be send to the authority. He however explained that the Stamp Duties charges had been in existence all this while, because when one go to the post office and buy N20, N30 stamp or whatever amount you buy, invariably you are fulfilling stamp duty obligation.

Speaking with Daily Times yesterday in Lagos, Managing Director/CEO, Finance &Investment Limited, Mr. Omokehinde Joshua noted that the current state of the economy called for swift seriousness from the fiscal authority. Joshua explained that the federal government must complement efforts of the CBN with serious fiscal policies to direct the economy. The economist urged the government to boost its revenue generation by improving on data gathering and monitoring in the country. He said: “In the course of taking records either at the national identity cards level, communications companies; banks or the likes, they should go beyond data collection alone but let people declare what they have, so as to enable the government to charge appropriate taxes and

acquisition, the Group Managing Director, Letshego, Chris Low said: “This opportunity to enter the Nigerian market coincides with the expansion of our range of financially inclusive products and services. We believe Nigeria’s growth prospects in our targeted low-and-middle income, and Micro, Small Enterprises (MSE), customer segments have significant upside potential, and that, by bringing our skills to this market we can further financial inclusion and improve lives across Nigeria. We look forward to being able to further improve lives across the continent through this development.” With over 80,000 depositors and over 10,000 MSE borrowing customers, he said the bank’s operations were directly aligned to Letshego’s financial inclusion agenda. Letshego, he pointed out, brings its expertise in payroll deduction lending in the public and private sector, as well as lending to micro and small enterprises, with a focus on agriculture, education and health sectors. In a related development, First Bank of Nigeria Limited has said that it is committed to driv-

ing financial literacy among the youth and unbanked segment of the economy, so as to enhance financial inclusion in the country. As part of the activities to empower the Nigerian child with a sound financial education, the bank has established the FutureFirst initiative aimed at empowering secondary school students between the ages of 12 and 17years old with the tools and knowledge for long-term financial independence. FirstBank’s Financial Literacy Programme aims to provide an experiential supplement to the business education of high school students in Nigeria and empower them with financial knowledge through training on running a business and the basics of money to promote a savings culture amongst them. To this end, the bank would visit Meadow Hall School, Oba Elegushi road, Ajah on Friday, January 29, 2016 to take the students through the concepts of financial literacy while letting them know that their capacity to imbibe this principles will enable them build a prosperous future. The FutureFirst Initiative has two platforms of expression – Career Counseling and Finan-

cial Literacy Programmes – both aimed at ensuring the youth of our nation are financially independent through fulfilling careers and the right financial knowledge. The Financial Literacy programme is run in partnership with Junior Achievement of Nigeria, who has been at the forefront of championing financial literacy in Nigeria for over 15 years. So far, over 40,000 students from 60 secondary schools have benefitted from this programme. According to Folake Ani-Mumuney, FirstBank’s Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications, the bank would constantly create avenues to put its stakeholders at the heart of its business. This is why the FutureFirst programme is designed to empower secondary school students to build fulfilling careers and be better equipped with tools and knowledge for financial independence. She said that to further secure the financial future of young students, First Bank has in place the MeFirst Account targeted at secondary school students, between 12 to 17 years to make them financially savvy, whilst saving up funds for their education and other future endeavours.

Also commenting on the decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the CBN not to adjust the nation’s currency, naira, Joshua said: “The CBN is still doing try by error, fine-tuning the policy that has already initiated, so that it can be stable. They want to exploit and see whether it will work or not.” “However there is pressure from the chamber of commerce to allow the 41 items delisted from accessing the CBN’s forex official window. So that those people who are buying or importing those items will no longer go to the black market and look for forex, because of the demand for forex to import those goods or material into the country. “Moreover, the stoppage of sales of dollars to Bureau De Change (BDC) operators may have contributed to the recent scarcity and high demand of dollar at the unofficial market. According to a statement from the LCCI, Mr John Tudy Kachikwu, the Managing Director/CEO of Jon Tudy Interbiz Nigeria Limited, who was described as an energetic and highly resourceful entrepreneur, attended St. Joseph Primary School, Onicha Ugbo; and had his tertiary education at Federal Technical College Yaba, where he obtained City and Guilds Certification in Building Technology. He also has a B.A (Hons.) In Philosophy from the University of Lagos. It added that Mr Kachikwu

antee them jobs anywhere in the world. Moreover, trainees and graduates will also be provided with adequate support, networks and contacts which will guarantee that the trainings they have acquired from the agency will be put to use in terms of job creation, entrepreneurship and sus-

had contributed immensely to the reversal of importation of agricultural products and had assisted in local content drive and sustainability. In his response, the LCCI SMEG Chairman expressed optimism on the role of Small and Medium Scale Enterprise in reviving the increasingly plummeting state of the Nigerian Economy. He pointed out factors such as unfavourable loan interest rate, unrealistic collateral requirements, onerous application procedure for loans, insufficient loan size and maturity date, poor infrastructure, multiple taxation and charges, amongst others, as issues that should be mitigated if the diversification goal of the government was to be achieved. Speaking earlier, Director General, LCCI, Mr. Muda Yusuf, expressed the pleasure of the Chamber as Mr. John Kachikwu assumes the role of Chairman, LCCI Small and Medium Enterprise Group. “His election will ensure and enhance the Chamber’s role as leading advocate of best business policy and practice, with the view to promoting and protecting Small and Medium Enterprises, which in turn will impact positively on the economy,” he added.

tainable growers of the nation’s economy. In her speech, Dr. Mrs. Juliet Onaeko, Director -General/Chief Executive of the agency stated that the decision by the agency to send trainees home after the successful completion of their examinations was to give room for more students/trainees to be ad-

mitted and trained in technical/ vocational skills when the centre reopened next week. She said trainees sponsored by the organization in collaboration with the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) and other organisations would soon get international certifications, stressing that ITF is already working on getting an international certification programme for its trainees to be able to work anywhere in the world. Onaeko refuted the rumour that the trainees were evacuated from the centre due to lack of equipment for their training, stating that the decision is in line with the centre’s committee recommendations as it is done in every school or place of learning, that students were expected to go home when they are through with their examinations, or when the schools were on holidays. She said, “the brief period during which the students will be on break will allow the agency to put the centre in optimal condition before their resumption. It was public knowledge that some of the trainees usually vandalize the centre whenever they are through with their examinations.” The ITF boss noted that the

fund has also being working with various established players in various industries like agriculture, oil and gas, construction and automobile maintenance in order to train and empower more youth. She maintained that the ITF’s continuous training through these collaborations and the MSTC were moves to support the Federal Government in reducing the rate of unemployment, by placing technical and vocational education in the front burner in the nation developmental plans. The ITF Director-General urged the trainees to take their training more seriously, noting that what the fund is doing by training them in various skills and trade areas is a major move to support the government in reducing the rate of unemployment among the youth. She said, ITF’s training programme has been helping players and operators in the various economic sectors and industries to raise new breeds of excellently skilled youth to work for them instead of relying on expatriates. “The ITF has been working on certifications for our trainees so that they can work anywhere in the world.

N50 stamp duties will affect Nigerians – MAN Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) on Wednesday said that the recently introduced stamp duty of N50.00 on any transaction above N1000.00 by the Federal Government would rub-off on Nigerians. Dr. Frank Jacobs Udemba, President, MAN, who said this in an interview with the press in Lagos, noted that it would further impoverish Nigerians, explaining that the act was to help the FG raise funds to finance its projects. He said, this may have come up as an additional source of revenue generation to the country as the global oil price continues to fall, adding that the final consumers will be the ones paying since the cost of the stamp duty will finally be paid by consumers which would be included as cost of production. Udemba stated that the organisations in the non-oil export sector such as Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) was working in collaboration with

Udemba

MAN to come-up with policies that would encourage non-oil exports. He noted, “We pay the list Value Added Tax (VAT) when compared to other ECOWAS countries, but we also face more enormous challenges that are greater than any other country. It is our hope that the government should not think of increasing VAT.” Commenting on foreign

grants, the MAN President said; “What is more important is to develop our industry and it requires closing our borders. No matter how much grant the West may offer us, it is not beneficial to us because it would still get finished. But if they are giving us grants to improve on our infrastructure, this would lead to development and it will be of great benefit to us.” “We still insist that the federal government should not sign the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) until our infrastructural level equals that of the Europe and the rest of the world; otherwise, our industries would continue to suffer under development and dwindle.” Udemba expressed dissatisfaction on how many Nigerians react to the purchase of made in Nigerian goods, explaining that before any product is certified by NAFDAC and SON, MAN must have tested it to ascertain that the product meets MAN specifications and standards.

African cassava agronomy initiative to change fortunes of cassava farmers The African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) project kicked-off yesterday with plans to improve the livelihoods and incomes of cassava farmers in Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, and DR Congo by researching, and tapping into and implementing best-bet agronomic practices. The project, which is led by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) with funding support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will specifically improve cassava yields, cassava root quality, cassava supply to the processing sector, and fertilizer sales, thereby engaging over 100,000 households in Nigeria and Tanzania, and facilitating the engagement of at least 30% women farmers. “The value of benefits from this project in Nigeria and Tanzania is projected to be over 27 million USD. Furthermore, through engagement of households in Ghana, Uganda, and DR Congo and through extra interest generated in the products developed by the project, these figures are expected to increase for at least 150,000 households and a value created of at least 40 million USD within the 5-year time frame of the project,” explained Dr Bernard Vanlauwe, IITA Director for Central Africa on Wednesday in Ibadan Nigeria.

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), cassava productivity has marginally increased to around 10–11 tons per hectare, well below attainable yields of over 30 tons per hectare. With the need for intensifying cassava production in areas where population densities have reduced access to fallow land and with cassava roots becoming important raw material for the processing sector, this yield gap needs to be reduced. Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Audu Ogbe, said the current yield of less than 15 tons per hectare makes Nigerian farmers uncompetitive in the cassava sector. “This initiative should find a solution to the issue of low productivity,” Ogbe who was represented by Mrs. Comfort Awe said. The ACAI initiative is placed within the context of intensification of cassava-based systems with a focus on the development of cassava agronomy recommendations to improve the productivity and quality of cassava roots in Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana, and Uganda, major cassava-producing countries in West and East Africa, and some spillover into East DR Congo. The project will be phased, starting in Nigeria and Tanzania in years 1 and 2 and will expand to

the other countries from year 3 onwards. Dr Nteranya Sanginga, IITA Director General said agronomy would provide the key to unlocking the potential of cassava in Africa. “If we want to increase the productivity of cassava, we must breed new varieties, improve the agronomy and value addition. I think we have done a lot in the area of breeding, what we need to do now is to capitalize on the agronomy,” Dr. Sanginga said. The ACAI project will harness African and international expertise, and follows a demanddriven approach whereby its interventions are responding to specific agronomy-related needs by partners already actively engaged in cassava dissemination and value chain activities in the target countries. The vision of success of ACAI is to deliver the necessary knowledge base and tools for accessing this knowledge to cassava scaling partners and ultimately farmers in the target countries while instituting the necessary capacity and skills for national system scientists to engage in transformative cassava agronomy. “The ultimate goal is to improve the productivity per unit area,” Dr. Abdulai Jalloh, Project Coordinator for ACAI said.

‘Agriculture prices are projected to decline 1.4 percent, with decreases in almost all main commodities groups, reflecting adequate production prospects despite fears of El Niño disruptions, comfortable levels of stocks, lower energy costs, and plateauing demand for biofuel.’ It is unfortunate; just too unfortunate that we have to go through this. For a long time, we shut our ears to the call, the call to put a stop to the rent economy that we clung to with passion. For us it was big, fast and sweet. Some even tagged it ‘sweet crude’; that was the christening done by one of our colleagues whose birthplace, interestingly, is the Niger Delta, the nation’s region that lays the golden egg; the ‘sweet crude’ which agreeably, like it is acclaimed across the globe, has patently been a curse. We stuck to it, romanced it and neglected other sectors that could post us high, that could take us home and dry. Now, we are in for it. Oil price has crashed and it dropping day in day out. The latest, according to the World Bank: The World Bank is lowering its 2016 forecast for crude oil prices to $37 per barrel in its latest Commodity Markets Outlook report from $51 per barrel in its October projections. The lower forecast reflects a number of supply and demand factors. These include soonerthan-anticipated resumption of exports by the Islamic Republic of Iran, greater resilience in US production due to cost cuts and efficiency gains, a mild winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and weak growth prospects in major emerging market economies, according to the World Bank’s latest quarterly report. Oil prices fell by 47 percent in 2015 and are expected to decline, on an annual average, by another 27 percent in 2016. However, from their current lows, a gradual recovery in oil prices is expected over the course of the year, for several reasons. First, the sharp oil price drop in early 2016 does not appear fully warranted by fundamental drivers of oil demand and supply, and is likely to partly reverse. Second, high-cost oil producers are expected to sustain persistent losses and increasingly

make production cuts that are likely to outweigh any additional capacity coming to the market. Third, demand is expected to strengthen somewhat with a modest pickup in global growth. The anticipated oil price recovery is forecast to be smaller than the rebounds that followed sharp drops in 2008, 1998, and 1986. The price outlook remains subject to considerable downside risks. “Low prices for oil and commodities are likely to be with us for some time,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist and lead author of the Commodities Markets Outlook. “While we see some prospect for commodity prices to rise slightly over the next two years, significant downside risks remain.” Beyond oil markets, all main commodity price indices are expected to fall in 2016 due to persistently large supplies, and in the case of industrial commodities, slowing demand in emerging market economies. In all, prices for 37 of the 46 commodities the World Bank monitors were revised lower for the year. ( Can you see our problem?) Emerging market economies have been the main sources of commodity demand growth since 2000. As a result, weakening growth prospects in these economies are weighing on commodity prices. “Low commodity prices are a double-edged sword, where consumers in importing countries stand to benefit while producers in net exporting countries suffer,” said Ayhan Kose, Director of the World Bank’s Development Prospects Group. “It takes time for the benefits of lower commodity prices to be transformed into stronger economic growth among importers, but commodity exporters are feeling the pain right away.” (There you are again). Non-energy prices are expected to slip 3.7 percent in 2016, with metals dropping 10 percent after a 21 percent fall in 2015, due to softer demand in emerging market economies and gains in new capacity. Agriculture prices are projected to decline 1.4 percent, with decreases in almost all main commodities groups, reflecting adequate production prospects despite fears of El Niño disruptions, comfortable levels of stocks, lower energy costs, and plateauing demand for biofuel.(Can you see that?)

FCMB tasks compliance officers on sustainable banking Stories by Azubike Nnadozie Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited, Mr. Ladi Balogun, has urged banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria to constantly adhere to compliance principles in line with global best practices. This, according to him, will enable the banking industry to remain sustainable and overcome the continued threats posed by money laundering, terrorists/ terrorism financing and other challenges in the society. Balogun stated this while declaring open the January 2016 general meeting of the Committee of Chief Compliance Officers of Banks in Nigeria (CCCOBIN) held yesterday in Lagos and was hosted by the Bank. He pointed out that maintaining a sound culture of compliance remains the primary foundation

upon which any sustainable compliance effort and programme rests, adding that, ‘’we must all build and sustain an organisational culture that promotes and supports compliance in the daily operations of our financial institutions.’’ The FCMB CEO further noted that actions within the regulatory and law enforcement agencies have made it abundantly clear that Boards of Directors and officers of financial institutions need to take governance, risk and compliance responsibilities more seriously in order to avoid serious compliance and reputational issues from crystallizing. Mr. Balogun therefore urged CCCOBIN to focus more on critical corporate governance issues that are of immense importance to the banking industry. The bank chief listed some of these areas to include; customer due diligence, suspicious transactions, excellent record keeping as

well as whistle blowing. He added, “to ensure that the business of banking is conducted in a responsible and transparent manner, it is imperative that we operate under full and complete compliance within all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and best practices.’ While commending financial institutions for adopting and implementing the sanctions screening services, as advised by the Central Bank of Nigeria, he stressed that, “we must however remain vigilant and ensure that we do not violate sanctions directives as issued by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and other relevant international bodies. It is important to avoid dealing with individuals and entities that are subject to local and international sanctions, especially in our cross-border transactions (transfers and trade).’’ He also commended CCCOBIN for all its efforts towards building

a transparent, strong and viable banking industry, particularly the establishment of the Compliance Institute, to advance professionalism and deepening of knowledge in compliance standards. “In FCMB, we will continue to support your Committee to ensure that it makes proportionate investments in capacity development initiatives, information sharing and collaborative efforts to combat the threats posed to our businesses in these areas,’’ Balogun assured. First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited is a member of FCMB Group Plc, which is one of the leading financial services institutions in Nigeria with subsidiaries that are market leaders in their respective segments. Having successfully transformed to a retail and commercial banking-led group, FCMB expects to continue to distinguish itself by delivering exceptional services, while enhancing the growth and achieve-

ment of the personal and business aspirations of its customers.

Red Star Express Plc has recorded 18.67 percent decrease in profit after tax (PAT) for the third quarter ended December 31, 2015. The company in a filing with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Tuesday said its profit after tax dropped from N309.091 million the previous year to N251.353 million during the period under review representing a drop in 18.67 percent. However, the company’s turnover also dropped marginally by 0.02 per cent to N4.999 billion

from N5 billion the previous year. Speaking recently at the company’s 22nd yearly general meeting, the Chairman of the company, Dr. Mohammed Koguna noted that the operating environment during the year under review had been quite challenging, not for Red Star Express Plc alone but for most companies operating in the country. Koguna said the slides in crude oil prices from an all high of $110 per barrel in April 2014 to $56.6 per barrel in March

2015, representing a 49 per cent drop which to a large extent reduced government’s revenue, impacted negatively on funds available to finance infrastructural projects needed to unlock growth. He noted that significant drop in government revenue and distortion in foreign exchange market led to the depreciation of the Naira in the period under review. This according to him resulted in higher cost for all the company’s international operations.

Essentials of effective business operation ‘‘Structuring and setting up processes in a business organisation therefore would require that you pay attention to the following: Respecting the separate entity status of your business - by separating your business from your person, in terms of the finances, facilities (real estate, vehicles, operational equipment, like the ICT equipment and tools, etc), human resources, goodwill, and so on.’’ Nwaodu Chukwuemeka Small businesses in Nigeria are popularly known with a clichéé (one man business) which funny enough are the peculiarity of most of these small and medium scale enterprises in this part of the world. Being a one man business has its own advantages, like prompt decisions making, personalization of dealings and fast responses to queries and complaints. All these though cannot be compared to the lapses of running and controlling an organisation by just one individual; like they say a tree cannot make a forest. But this is a syndrome that runs across most of the small and medium enterprises in Nigeria, where one individual would be the chief executive, the financial director, head of human resources, as well as the facilities manager and much more. What this does is that the quality of decisions in the company would be shallow, due to the lack of a peer review mechanism. Another disadvantage would be the inability to run the day to day activities of the outlets or branches independent of the owner. Especially in his absence, nothing serious would go on in the absence of the business owner, even with the aid of technology. He has to be around for agreements and contracts to be negotiated and signed, for issuing and signing of cheques, for decisions on salary payments, for

Chukwuemeka

Enelamah, Minister of Trade and Industry

people to be hired, and for spare parts / huge consignments of raw materials to be procured. Nothing serious happens without the owner being around to see to it or at least to supervise. The implication is that the business cannot grow or expand beyond the geographic scope the owner can cover at a time. And since human beings are not omnipresent, the growth and expansion of the business will be limited and therefore the opportunities and wealth that it can generate. Sustainability and quality of management are all threatened with this arrangement; under such a centralized decision making process and most times without any strategic sessions, the decisions and quality of management coming from here surely will be poor. And should anything happen to the business owner, in terms of disabilities, death or loss of freedom, the business goes with it, in that there hasn’t been a preparation for independent operation of the business. It is therefore important that businesses formalize their operations for both efficiency and sustainability. Structuring and setting up processes in a business organisation therefore would require that you pay attention to the following:

Respecting the separate entity status of your business - by separating your business from your person, in terms of the finances, facilities (real estate, vehicles, operational equipment, like the ICT equipment and tools, etc), human resources, goodwill, and so on. Some people think that because they founded and funded the business, they and the business are now one and the same. Which is not true, the lawyers would say businesses are an independent entity, which can sue and be sued. The public relations practitioners say they assume personalities of their own, which is called brands. Accountants would say it’s an ongoing concern; how then would any one combine the resources of a business with his, simply because he is the owner. These people would dip their hands in the business coffers for personal use and claim like they would say in Nigeria ‘’me and my business are one, that if you have seen me, you have seen my business’’, no wonder therefore you can hardly see any successful indigenous business organisation of over fifty years in Nigeria or a trans-generational one of any age. Also organisations where all the critical decisions are concentrated on one person, does not allow for the crystallization

of the best of ideas, strategies and implementations. It does not also allow for effective monitoring and control protocol to be adopted. This affects the quality control in management, products and organisation’s value and ethics. Building structures to diversity the operational base, the strategic and management line of the business is a must, if sustainability and efficiency is the entrepreneur’s goal. Many businesses die with the owner because the business has been running only on his promptings and when he isn’t there any longer, the business ceases to exist. The business is the activity that generates the money, but organisation is what sustains it. It is therefore important for the entrepreneur to understand the development process of an organisation and to know that it’s the organisation that is transferable to the next generation and not just the money. One of the major reasons inheritance in form of money don’t last, is that it’s not earned and therefore it’s so difficult to endure, due to the beneficiaries lack of sustainability capacity. Establishing processes and procedures - which are the operating standards or set standards of operation in an organisation. This is a defined way and

method of doing things and carrying out operations and activities in a specified place. This makes replication easier for operations, thereby making it easier for branching out, as well as franchising. It also makes delegation easier and monitorable, so with benchmarking of performance, operational audits and compliance monitoring. Developing Growth plans must be factored-in in the entrepreneur’s business model, in order to know which strategy and combinations to adopt in the business growth plans, whether it will be linear or organic, or even a combination of the two. He will have to choose its target market and determine the approach of reaching them and optimising the opportunity. Would he go for the niche or the mass market, is he going to serve luxury or convenience items, how about targeting margin by turnover (volume driven margins) or unit sale (profit on unit sale). These will all determine the marketing and sales strategy, as well as the business model / architecture, the business location, pricing and the ambiance of the shops / Offices. Establishing market strategy is very important, in that it defines the concept of reaching out to the target market, the market penetration model, pricing and cost outlay and ultimately achieving your market share. Establishing sound leadership selection procedures for the recruitment of the line managers is a very important process of establishing effectiveness in business operations. The entrepreneur must have to develop a sound method of picking leaders for his organisation, he will either develop them organically in house, or he head hunts, whichever way, for effectiveness and efficiency in management; sound, trained and tested drivers must be hired to stir the ship of the business to the desired goal. In all synergy, command and control structures, must be well in place and oiled for effective business operations though it’s said that vision cannot be delegated, it has to be sold to loyal associates for synergy and fulfillment of dreams.

Daily Times Nigeria Friday, January 29, 2016

Nollywood should be restructured Clarion Chukwurah Top Nollywood ageless beauty and veteran actress, Clarion Chukwurah, noted for doing her best when it comes to roles in the movie industry is set to delve into a reality documentary series titled ‘FOOTSTEPS’. This she indicated recently during a media chat at her house at Omole Phase one, where she disclosed what the reality documentary series is all about and other sundry issues. Excerpts: Isaac Oguntoye Looking this radiant despite your age, what’s your beauty routine? I don’t follow any beauty routine. Most times, if I’m not going out, I just brush my teeth. I don’t even take my bath until about 8pm at night. At times, I do a full bathtub or a shower depending on the weather. I also use scent oil and candles to relax myself. I go for fruit base moisturizers like pawpaw, orange, vitamin C base moisturizers.

can be wired to a positive mindset. Footsteps also talks about women and how they are being treated. I didn’t limit this to Nigerian women alone, instead we reached out to women in South America, Carabbeans and Africa. In the course of this, we found out that the same issues that women are facing domestically in Africa are the same issues that women in America are facing.

You started a project recently called ‘FOOTSTEP’, can you tell us more about it? My new project, Footsteps is a reality documentary series that follows my journey from America to the United Kingdom and to East Africa; looking at the issues that are upper-most in the minds of Nigerians. What these issues entail and what the solutions are. The documentary also looks into where we as Nigerians, government leadership, and where the values of the people lie.

You started with entertainment; won’t you be looking at issues in the entertainment industry? With Footsteps, we try to touch every aspect of human lives. We have episodes with a former female Nigerian footballer who is now a coach in America. We have episodes with Miss Nigeria who also lives outside the country. So, Footsteps is about the totality of Nigerians.

What ‘s the duration of the project? Well, I started work on Footsteps in 2013 and it’s still an ongoing process but Footsteps will be aired on television any moment from now. How many episodes do we have in the documentary? It’s a 26-episode reality documentary series but presently we have 11 episodes on ground.

Being among top celebrities who advocate women equality, will the project only be based on women and our leadership problem? The project is not only about women but it’s about Nigerians and issues surrounding our leadership. It’s also about how Nigerians

How will Nigerians access this documentary? Well, we are looking at Africa Magic showcase, Television Continental, TVC and a couple of others. I enjoin Nigerians to watch out for FOOTSTEPS any moment from now and they should learn from each episode. You’ve been off the screen for some time now; would you say the new project is the reason? I don’t know what you mean by that, maybe because you’ve not been watching me on Africa magic for free. I have six movies in the market last year and year before last year, I had about seven movies in the market. What were the challenges you encountered in the cause of

shooting the documentary? One of the challenges was when we were prevented from entering the Royal Oak with our recording materials. The Royal Oak is a place where top Nigerian politicians have multi-million dollars homes in Houston Texas and they do know that some of us know about it. It’s a place where you have not just the regular security but the Police cops. And the fact that I could even take pictures was because I have con-

Imagine how Nigerian government officials who were on salary could afford to own two or three homes in Royal Oak. A house ranges from six million dollars upward at Royal Oak. ‘My work in Nollywood is the brain behind

Footstep’

Continued from L2

The Clarion Chukwurah’s initiative is one that I financed from my purse. I am the executive producer. Any plan of dumping acting for the reality documentary series project? I am an actress, so, it is not possible for me to dump Nollywood because that is what I do best. My work in Nollywood is the brain behind Footstep. It is about me taking leverage on my brand equity. Since 1999 when I started with the Clarion Chukwurah’s initiatiave, it was all about leveraging on my equity. It is my passion and will always be my passion to look beyond the entertainment aspect, to look at issues that affect people in my society. I am not just an entertainer but I am a multi- talented person. I am not dumping Nollywood because being in Nollywood doesn’t mean you can’t delve into other things. How would you advice Nigerian women to strike a balance between their marriage, motherhood and their careers? It is about time management which is very important in this context. However, I don’t support both parents working the same hours. This is affecting our society. It is highly responsible for how society is moving and imbibing a lot of negativity from the Western world. When children are left with little or no attention, they engage with online activities, entertainment that’s not properly censored and a host of other things that may corrupt their mindset. I suggest both parents should work on their time management to strike the balance. How do you perceive Nollywood? Nollywood needs to be structured. The whole thing is not just about improving the quality of movies or improving the quality of equipment rather it involves the right funding, it involves how actors are paid. Nollywood is still in a zigzag which means anybody can do anything. Nollywood has to be structured in a way that one arm of the organization will feed on the next arm. We have to make things work in Nollywood where you have the Guild of Producers feeding on the Director’s Guild and also

the Director’s Guild feeding on the Actor’s Guild. When you have a situation whereby anybody can produce, direct or act a movie, what do you think the result will be? Some of us seem to be selfish, we also lack unity. We need to see Nollywood as one corporate entity. We have to change our mindsets as actors, producers, and directors to see Nollywood working. Is there any difference between Clarion Chukwurah on stage and at home? I’m two different persons; the person on the screen is the image, the brand. Let me say, the person on the screen is Clarion while the person in the house is called Nneka. What’s the news about you beind a member of the Church of Scientology? I am not a member of the Church of Scientology. Church of Scientology is one body that supported the episodes of Footsteps. Footsteps was shot in Hollywood at the celebrity centers of the Church of Scientology. It is the Church of Scientology that owns this center in Hollywood. Again, the center and the crew members that worked on FOOTSTEPS in Hollywood came from Church of Scientology. What do you think made the Church of Scientology support Footsteps? They considered the objective of what I was doing and how it will add value to people’s life. What exactly inspired you to take up acting as a profession? That dates way back to when I was five; I used to be taken to the cinemas with a friend we used to call the bourgeoisie kid. We watched Michael Jackson, Cleopatra and it became a natural thing to think it was what I wanted to do. So I trained for it, starting as a trainee actor, later to become a semi-professional actor before I went to school. In my first year as an undergraduate, I appeared in my first film, ‘Money Power‘, and my first Soap Opera: ‘Mirror in the Sun’ was when I was leaving the university.
