Editorial Much ado about tenure of INEC boss Continued from page 1

Jega is legally bound to proceed on terminal leave from March 24. As expected, the din and staccato of noises are getting subsumed in partisan politics, rather than the urbane discuss of the legality or otherwise of Jega observing the rules and traditions guiding public service. According to public service regulations, Jega’s tenure is expected to end on June 24. By tradition, he is expected to proceed on terminal leave, three months before the expiration of his tenure. It is a fact that Jega was nominated by President Goodluck Jonathan on June 8, 2010 and his confirmation by the Senate took place on June 24, 2010. Under the INEC Act, he is supposed to serve for five years beginning from the day of confirmation. It is therefore surprising that a lot of furore is being raised on this simple issue. Such brickbats are uncalled for. It is trite for anyone or group to bring politics into what, to all intents, is a purely civil service procedure. It is pertinent to restate the Public Service Rules (PSR) 100238,which mandates “that officers are required to give three months notice of their retirement from service terminating on the effective date of their retirement”. In context, the term retirement equally applies to all those on fixed appointment like the INEC boss. For avoidance of doubt, this is not the first time that a precedent has been set. Jega’s predecessor, Prof. Maurice Iwu proceeded on terminal leave on April

28, 2010 while his tenure was to expire on June 13,2010. Incidentally, it was the then acting President Jonathan who ordered that Iwu proceed on terminal leave. Other constitutionally tenured public servants had done the same in the past. For example, the tenure of former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar was to end on July 30, 2014 but he proceeded on terminal leave on May 12, 2014. The same was for former Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Dahiru Musdapher. Those making a case for Jega to proceed on terminal leave are doing so on the ground of existing convention and not necessarily due to any personal interest regarding his tenure. Not many observers of Jega’s tenure in the last five years would say that the former activist and Political Science professor has been a failure. He did his best given the circumstances and tools at his disposal. He will go down in history as conducting the 2011 elections that was adjudged free and fair by local and international observers alike. That is why we have always argued that the state should endeavour to build strong institutions rather than strongmen. Posers: God forbid, what if Jega drops dead now, what becomes of the institution he is heading? Do we then stop all activities at INEC just because the country cannot find a credible replacement? Modern societies have over time weaned themselves of the StoneAge mentality that ascribes indispensability to any individual. It should not be different in the case of Jega.

Before the Police need policing... Sam Nzeh

ÏÏÏThough

not a few Nigerians are happy at the plight of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, the insistence of some them to proceed on strike come March 28, 2015, is not only worrisome, but also has has the potential of putting spanner in the works of the presidential elections billed for that day. On Tuesday, February 17, over 15,000 police officers who were in December 2013 promoted from the rank

of sergeant to Inspector and from that rank to Assistant Superintendent of Police, threatened proceed on strike on March 28 if the police authorities failed to pay them their salary arrears and allowances. But despite the assurances given by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Suleiman Abba, that the police authority was doing its best to effect the payment of the promotion arrears of all the officers, the aggrieved police officers on Monday this week insisted that the strike would go on come March 28. While the situation in which these aggrieved po-

lice officers have found themselves is regrettable and should be remedied as soon as possible, they must be reminded that police regulations do not give room for strike and that such has consequences. Again, the aggrieved officers must realise that the mood of the nation does not, at present, favour their proposed action. This is particularly so in view of the critical role the Police play in safeguarding lives and property in the country, including ensuring that the March 28 and April 11, 2015 general election passes off smoothly and peacefully.

Nigeria loses N1.18bn daily to oil theft - Navy Celestine Okafor & Sunday Isuwa Abuja

ÏÏÏ The Nigerian Navy said on

Tuesday that the country loses N1.18 billion daily to oil theft. This is coming just as the Navy said the sum of N4,065,182,763.00 should be released to it, as a balance of its 2014 Capital Appropriation, to enable it execute its budget fully. Speaking at the budget defence, the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin, said that the N4, 065,182,763.00 figure translated to N433.62 billion annually. Jibrin, who was represented

by the Chief of Logistics, Rear Admiral Peter Akomaye Agba, said the loss of N1.18 billion daily to oil theft is due to poor law enforcement. ”The Nigerian Navy is constitutionally tasked with the protection of our maritime assets and, recently, the Chatham House revealed that Nigerian crude oil is being stolen on an industrial scale. It is conservatively estimated that about 100,000 barrels per day (bpd), valued at N1.18 billion is stolen daily due to poor law enforcement presence, which translated to N433.62 billion annually. ”This figure does not include those suspected (to have) stolen

from the export pipelines, cost of oil spillage clean up, loss of income to the fishing communities and environmental degradation,” he said. Jibrin observed that the Nigerian Navy would have gone a long way in curbing the menace, as well as make the operations of the international oil companies more profitable, were it that 20 percent of the loss was made available to the Nigerian Navy annually, as both capital and overhead budgets. On the challenges faced by the Navy from the 2014 budget, Jibrin disclosed that the amount of capital funds that were released,

Its chairman, Comrade Folu Ogunseyin, and Secretary, Comrade Folu Oni, said in Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday, that the EFCC should probe the source of the money to confirm whether it was credible or not. They affirmed that the alleged donation was not in the interest of the state, but the parochial interest of Fayemi. “We hereby call on the wellmeaning indigenes of the state to condemn the so called donation. We equally call on the anti-graft agencies – the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related

Offences Commission (ICPC) and the EFCC – to investigate the source of this huge amount donated by Fayemi, and if found culpable, he should be dealt with according to the law. “We are of the opinion that if drastic action could be taken against the former governor, it would serve as deterrent to other callous and anti-workers leaders.” The group also said that such amount should have been spent to empower thousands of jobless youths, who were roaming the streets of Ado Ekiti and other towns and constituting a threat to the polity, having become willing tools in the hands of the politicians.

ty (PDP) has congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan over Tuesday’s ruling by the Court of Appeal, which upheld his eligibility to contest the 2015 Presidential election. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said the court ruling represents a positive step towards Jonathan’s impending, overwhelming victory at the polls, come March 28. The party described the verdict as “victory for democracy and the rule of law, especially in protecting the inalienable rights of eligible citizens to freely participate in the electoral process without any form of hindrance”. The Party added that the development had helped to enrich the Judiciary and further aided the nation’s democratic evolution. The PDP also applauded Jonathan for always remaining focused and upholding democratic principles, which enable Nigerians to operate in an environment that allows for full expression of fundamental rights. Commending the Judiciary for its stabilising role in the polity, the PDP urged its members and supporters across the country to close ranks and stand on the platform of this judicial victory to intensify efforts for eventual electoral victory.

He said this, while addressing reporters Monday at his Ake Palace, Abeokuta, to announce the activities marking the celebration of this year’s Lisabi Festival. The monarch attributed the giant strides recorded by Globacom in the 11 years of its operation to the dynamism, commitment, exposure and business acumen of the company’s Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. (GCON), adding that they were both old boys of Ibadan Grammar School, which had produced personalities committed to attaining the peak in all endeavours. He congratulated Globacom on sponsoring the Festival again and declared that the telecommunication company would always be the preferred telecommunication partner of Egba sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora.

No plan to sack Jega, Jonathan assures Henry Omunu & Augustine Aminu, Abuja

ÏÏÏPresident

Goodluck Jonathan has once again refuted allegations that he plans to remove the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega. The rumour of such a plot took the centre stage at the House of Representatives on Tuesday where a resolution rejecting it was passed by the members. Also on Tuesday, the Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, opposed any plan to remove the INEC chair-

man as well as a rumoured plot to impose a Interim National Government of the country. Speaking with Aljazeera Television on Monday, President Jonathan said there was no truth to the speculations. He had made a similar declaration during his recent Presidential Media Chat. Dr Jonathan noted that INEC is a sensitive and important institution and that removing its chairman arbitrarily would spark public outcry. “Except somebody is insinuating that the Chairman has done something wrong. You cannot change an officer, except the per-

son has done something wrong,” the president said in response to a question on the INEC boss. He continued: “Government, whether at the federal or state level, president or governor, does not wake up and change somebody, especially somebody like the INEC Chairman, except that person has done something wrong. “INEC is a very sensitive body. For me to change INEC Chairman Nigerians will ask questions. So, you cannot wake up and change INEC Chairman.” He added that he had never discussed with “any human being on earth about changing INEC

Chairman”. The House of Representatives opposed any attempt to relieve Jega of his post and any plan to further postpone the general elections from March 28, 2015. The members unanimously passed the resolution, following the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved by Hon. Ali Ahmad (APC/ Kwara). Attempts by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Leo Ogor (PDP/ Delta) to prevent the House from considering the motion, by raising Order 62 failed as Speaker Tambuwal ruled him out of order.

didate got 25 million. In brief, the Governor is being accused of plundering the state to feather the nests of his immediate family and in-laws. In his reply to the allegations, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Onyekachi Eni told the Daily Times that the allegations were a figment of the imagination of detractors. Eni traced the setting up of the private companies to the desire of Elechi’s predecessor, Chief Sam Egwu, to boost the state’s

Hon. Ogor had observed that the motion by Hon. Ahmad was speculative and contained no facts to support his claims that Prof. Jega would be removed from office or that the Federal Government was considering shifting the general elections to a new date. In passing its resolution, the House advised the government, the political class and security agencies to heed the warning of imminent and present danger in the event the elections are shifted further. Furthermore, the House resolved to hold accountable anyone or individual that foists on INEC any decision or action whatsoever that will make it impracticable to conduct the elections on March 28, and April 11 respectively, including the unconstitutional attempt to remove Prof. Jega from office. Moving his motion, Hon. Ahmad said the postponement of the general elections by six weeks because of the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, has heightened the likelihood for preelection violence in the country. He expressed alarm over the possibility to further alter the time-table for the elections as well as the planned illegal sack of the INEC chairman by certain forces. “There is already documented evidence from several sources that any change in status quo arrangements, especially removal of the INEC chairman, presents a possibility of violence and would occasion the sowing of seeds of a major crisis”, the lawmaker said. He added that he was apprehensive that such deliberately induced violence might snowball into post-election violence, widespread and systematic attacks, arson, murder and persecution as happened in the aftermath of the 2011 general elections. Hon. Ahmad averred that the planned sack of Jega will be unconstitutional pursuant to Se3ction 157 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates two conditions under which the INEC boss can be removed from office. Also on Tuesday, the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, branded those allegedly mooting the constitution of an Interim National Government (ING) as enemies of Nigeria. The speaker who, on Tuesday, received a delegation from the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCS-SR), in Abuja, expressed fears that dark days could return to Nigeria following the ominous signs beclouding the nation’s political landscape. He declared: “There is no inter-

investigations into allegations of “gross misconduct” against the Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Martins Elechi, begin, one of the puzzles that will have to be resolved is how he allegedly handed over of one of the state’s choice potential cash cows to his son and in-law. Documents from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) made available to Daily Times indicate that Elechi incorporated a cement company on behalf of the state, but made his son and in-law shareholders. APC denies role in fuel scarcity Augustine Aminu Abuja

ÏÏÏThe All Progressives Con-

gress Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) has distanced the party from the current petrol scarcity in the country, describing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s allegation against it as fallacious. In a statement signed by Malam Garba Shehu, APCPCO’s director, Media and Publicity, in Abuja on Tuesday, the organisation said that the Federal Government should take responsibility for the fuel supply situation in parts of the country. The document said that it was wrong for the PDP to accuse APC

of responsibility for the scarcity, adding that the accusation was misdirected. It wondered why APC and its presidential candidate had to be blamed for every problem currently bedeviling the country. “What else are they going to accuse the APC and its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, of ?’’ it queried. It advised the PDP and the Federal Government to dissipate energy in ensuring that Nigerians get credible, free and fair elections on March 28 and April 11. According to Shehu, any ruling party that could lie through its teeth in order to mislead Nigerians, automatically lacks the credibility to seek re-election.

in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, was stunned when a counsel to a plaintiff, Mr. Chike Onyali, told the court that his client, one Chief Benjamin Nwizu, was being trailed and harassed by policemen attached to the Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Mr. Onyali, who was addressing the court on a case of contempt filed against a Federal Government agency, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) revealed how some policemen and soldiers from an un-

disclosed military formation were being used by SON to patrol in front of the residence of his client, Nwizu, managing director of D&K Golden City Investment Ltd., at the Onitsha GRA, in a bid to silence him, sequel to a case he had brought against the defendant. It would be recalled that a Federal High Court in Awka had, in February 2011, restrained the defendant, SON, a Federal Government regulatory body on fake and counterfeit products, including the Inspector-General of Police or his agents, from invading the premises or factory belonging to the plaintiff, or carting away Dorco disposable shaving stick razors.

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, confirmed on Tuesday that close to 650,000 Nigerians have been internally displaced in the North Eastern part of Nigeria since the Boko Haram insurgency began in the region. Adoke also said that there are also one million Nigerians who are now refugees in neighboring countries of Cameroun, Chad and Niger. “This situation has posed grave humanitarian problems in the affected areas, including the neighboring countries.” The AGF disclosed this in a speech at the high level segment of the 28th session of the United

Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Switzerland. He noted with regrets that the situation has caused grave humanitarian situations in the affected areas. According to him: “Nigeria’s experience in combating terrorism and insurgency perpetrated by the Boko Haram sect in NorthEastern Nigeria, and our common borders with Chad, Niger and Cameroun, clearly demonstrates the relevance and potency of international cooperation and solidarity in tackling this scourge.” Adoke, however, pointed out that the federal government has noted with satisfaction the recent successes achieved by security forces and the increased level of cooperation at regional

But on February 8, this year, one Monday Oguni Agbor and Ani Ibor Ngwele, reverend and usher of the Assemblies of God Church, respectively, were allegedly murdered at Faratong Junction in Ediba. Enyieko raised the alarm on Tuesday in Calabar during a press conference, which he said was held “to save the people of Usumutong from possible annihi-

The AGF explained that Nigeria chose to return to the Human Rights Council because of her strong belief that she can contribute her quota to ongoing efforts to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights across the globe.

Tom Maiyashi, a Kaduna based educationist turned politician, is a chieftain of the major opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with VICTOR JIBRIN, he takes a look at the past and present political developments in Nigeria and warned that Nigerians may no longer cooperate with the government if the forth coming election at all levels is not free and fair. Excerpts: Nigeria is once again at a cross road with the 2015

general elections threatening the country’s corporate existence. Are you worried about this development? Naturally, any student of history who is concerned about Nigeria should be worried. In fact to say worry is an understatement because with the benefit of insight, Nigeria has gone through a lot of crisis. From 1966 to date, the polity has been unstable. This year, when Nigerians are looking forward to another transition through the democratic

processes, there seems to be a lot of concerns, giving the way the process is being run. The presidential election would have held on the 14th of this month but it has to be postponed by another six weeks. Nobody expected, at the time of postponement, that that was going to be the case. There are many Nigerians who genuinely felt that that postponement is unjustified and it raises a lot of questions about the credibility of this process. That raised the CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

To say that Adamawa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been enmeshed in a spate of crisis in recent times, is an understatement. Indeed, the sunshine state has been in or out of one crisis or the other in the last few months. And there have been divergent views on what could have been responsible for the constant crisis rocking the party in the state. The crisis started since the advent of the former Governor Murtala Nyako’s regime especially in the later part of his second term. While trying to unravel the reasons for the continued polarisation of the party, it was discovered that the

concentration of a wide range of cultures and tribes of about 76 in all with different languages might have been one of the factors responsible for this. Quite often, the state has been referred to as a mini-Nigeria because of its ethnic and multireligious diversity. Available statistics indicate that there are about 72 ethnic groups with different religious groups made up of Christians, Muslims and Traditional religions faithful. It is also a state with numerous potentials. Since the return to civil rule in 1999, Adamawa PDP has been in one crisis or the other with various contending forces at daggers drawn in an attempt to take control of the seat of governance. Governor Boni Haruna, quite a lot of big battles took place to scuttle his administration and discredit him as a non performer. The grouse of the party members then had to do with lopsidedness in political appointments. Most of the power brokers believed they were short changed and so went for their own pound of flesh when the opportunity presented itself. Before the end of the Haruna administration, the party barely remained one entity as the political rivalry between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar had further polarised the party. To be precise, PDP was so bedeviled with crisis that some CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives and Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has alleged that the state Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, cannot account for over N175 billion fund of the local governments in the state. According to him, Okorocha who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2011 but later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) misappropriated the fund belonging

to the local governments in the state and as such Imo people have rejected him for a second term in office ahead of the forthcoming polls. Speaking to Imo indigenes in Onitsha, Anambra State, Ihedioha pointed out that intensive investigation has revealed that the outgoing governor of Imo State had allegedly collected from the Federation Account over N175 billion council funds from May 2011 to December 2014 which the APC administration cannot account for. He said there has not been any

clear explanation from the state government on how the funds were expended, adding that the governor has a case to answer over the misappropriated funds. “We have asked them what they used the money to do, they told us that they have used the money of the local government system collected between May 2011 and December 2014 to build 305 schools in Imo State, they told us that they used the money to build 27 hospitals in Imo State. We know that these projects have not been completed.

political temperature of the country and people are in fact, in the situation whereby questions are being asked as to whether the elections are going to hold at all. Talking about the postponement, many reasons were advanced and that included the inability of the security agency to provide security at that period. Some felt that that postponement has doused tension but from the look of things, do you believe that the tension which was generated earlier will still not come up in the March 28 election? Definitely there is already greater tension as we move towards the rescheduled date of 28th March. The tension will continue to mount until the elections are actually held and results are announced as expected. The reasons given for the postponement of the election, as I have said earlier, have raised a lot of questions. In the preparation for this election, we had clear four years to prepare for this election. So, if there was anything that was going to threaten this election to the extent that security agencies will have a duty to ensure that that does not in any way affect the elections, appropriate step should have been taken. But it is clear to all Nigerians that security situation which we have been in for the past five years, particularly in the north eastern states of Yobe, Adamawa and Borno and to some extent, Gombe, the manner in which this security situation was handled has been anything but effective. There has been a lackadaisical attitude towards this issue and many Nigerians believe that the lack of seriousness to tackle this insurgency was largely to create a situation in which we

have finally found ourselves when elections would be postponed. But the same security agencies have now told the nation that the situation will change in six weeks while we have lived with it for five years, several thousands of lives have been lost, property have been destroyed, children have been orphaned, women have been widowed, the basic live of ordinary Nigerians has completely been destroyed and shattered; people are in refugee camps and this has been going on for five years. So, the question that one would ask is that if it were possible that we will solve this problem in six weeks, did Nigerians have to go these harrowing experiences for five years? What explanation will government give now that we have realised that we can solve this problem in six weeks and yet we allow the problem fester five long harrowing years. Somebody must give explanations to Nigerians to these grandstanding agencies of the federal government including security that are shouting on top of their chests that they are on top of the situation. Take for example the issue of the leader of this insurgency, Shekau, security agencies themselves have told Nigerians that this fellow has been killed three times but now have an authoritative directive that those at the war front should capture Shekau alive so that he will come and explain to Nigerians what has happened that led to this crisis. That raises a lot of fundamental questions. Is the military, a Nigerian institution established by Nigeria and run for Nigeria to protect Nigerians? Is there sincerity in this thing? These are questions that will continue to hang on until someone proffers the answers. What is your assessment of the military in combating the

Our expectation now is for the federal government to ensure that this situation is dealt with decisively to win back the confidence of Nigerians with the elections conducted freely and fairly to generate confidence and acceptability of Nigerians so that Nigeria can move on as one country united and indivisible. If the issue is for us to jump to the street and celebrate that now there is conquest on insurgency, where did they get the energy from and they couldn’t get this energy for five years. So, to me this is just mere grandstanding and Nigerians should not be deceived. Let us wait and see until this thing is dealt with conclusively. We have less than a month to the rescheduled general elections, what is your expectation? My expectation is the expectation

Credible and acceptable election is relative, depending on how one is affected. Are we likely to have an election that will be acceptable to all parties in view of the fact that your party, APC and the kinsmen of Mr. President have taken positions over what will be the outcome of the forthcoming election? I don’t want us to behave as if all Nigerians are unreasonable or that all Nigerians do not know what is good or what is bad. Whatever conclusions Nigerians deduce from a situation are informed by history. Nigerians have been betrayed several times. Elections have been rigged. People have been maimed. People have lost their lives in the process of elections just for simply coming out to perform their civic duties. It is the responsibility of political elites, particularly those in government, to ensure that confidence is generated between the government and the governed, between the government and the electorate so that this process can sail through without any further deterioration. party members moved to the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) with their principal, Atiku Abubakar. This could be best described as the beginning of the PDP crisis in Adamawa. However, shortly after 2011 elections, Abubakar jettisoned the ACN and re-united with his former party (PDP) and since then, the PDP can be said to be enmeshed in varying degrees of political crisis. Indeed, since 2014, the PDP has been swimming in fresh crisis. The first attempt to impeach former Governor Nyako hit the rocks. Though a moment of respite came for the former Naval Chief, it was albeit short lived as a full blown impeachment saga soon engulfed him and of course, it finally consumed him when he was impeached by members of the State House of Assembly on July 15, 2014. From that day, it could be literarily say that the PDP has ‘murdered’ sleep and has since then been having sleepless nights. Indeed, political uncertainty has enveloped Adamawa since the impeachment saga consumed the administration of Nyako. With the vicious cycle of political confusion still simmering, the party was again embroiled in another round of political uprising during its primaries. The selection of candidates was conducted in Abuja in what appeared a show of might by prominent members of the party based in Abuja. That had initially appeared to be the last straw to break the camel’s back. However, like the cat with the proverbial nine lives, the party wriggled out of its daunting challenge to forge ahead with its political programmes and campaigns. What actually appeared as a saving grace for the party was the change in the dates of the election by INEC. Before then, political observers had presumed a monumental doom for the party in Adamawa State in particular and Nigeria in general. The party rather than been deterred and overwhelmed, shrugged aside all these

challenges and promptly swung into action after a stakeholders meeting convened at the banquet hall of the Government House in Yola. Here it was unanimously agreed that their differences must be buried and that all hands must be on deck to achieve maximum victory at the 2015 polls. Many far reaching decisions were taken in order for the party to move forward and forge a new cause. It was at the reconciliatory meeting which was chaired by the leader of the party in the state, Governor Bala James Nggilari who also used the occasion to

inaugurate a new campaign team for the party with Chief Felix Tangwami as its Director General. Since the pronouncement of Chief Felix Tangwami as Director General of the Jonathan/Ribadu Campaign Organisation, it has been jubilation galore as party faithfully and political watchers have agreed in unison that he is the right man for the job. Pronto, he swung into action shortly after the stakeholders meeting with the neighbor-to-neighbor campaign programme of the party. He is seen as a round peg in a round hole in the aspiration of

Even where they are intimidating or blackmailing Nigerians, they want Nigerians to cooperate. It is not humane. If cooperation is required from Nigerians, the leadership must show decisively that it is on the part of justice, on the part of fairness and it is going to conduct an election that is free, fair and whoever wins at whatever level, is given his victory and whoever loses should take his

loss. This is the only thing that can generate confidence in the minds of Nigerians to those who are leading them and those who want to lead them are really serious and patriotic. Anything short of this, people should stop calling for Nigerians just from very dubious philosophy that Nigerians should cooperate. Nigerians have been cooperating, yet the situation of their lives is deteriorating

the party to achieve success in the 2015 elections. Many political watchers in the state are of the view that Ribadu has what it takes to confront other candidates in the elections headlong as the three major candidates, Engr. Gundiri, of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr. Ahmad Modibbo of Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) and Senator Muhammed Jibrilla (Bindow) All Progressives Congress (APC) were all prominent members of the PDP before they swayed their party allegiance. In grassroots politics of Adamawa State, one name that first comes to mind is Tangwami, the Garkuwan Mbula whose political empire cuts across the state and his views greatly respected. A founding member of PDP in the state since the return to civil rule in 1999, the former state Commissioner for Health is a man of many possibilities in Adamawa politics. A former Chairman of Demsa Local Government, an astute mobiliser and a grassroots politician, Tangwami possess the credentials to market a candidate positively due to his very wide contacts in the state. A former ALGON Chairman of the state, he was the Director General for the Campaign of former Governor Murtala Nyako in the 2011 elections. He however, parted ways with the former governor when he resigned from his cabinet as a commissioner as the relationship went sour. Political watchers in the state are of the view that Tangwami would have his cup full in his onerous task of leading the party to victory this time around. They hinged their reasons on the issue of the three other candidates who were all prominent members of the PDP before switching camps.

They want to see a credible Nigeria; they want a Nigeria that is strong, united and play its role in the committee of nations. So, it is not Nigerians that are not cooperating, it is the leaders that are reckless and irresponsible. If they change their attitude, this will cease to be what it is now.

Unified exams for public, primary schools laudable - NAPPS president

Pupils doing a class work

Dr. Abayomi Oluwatobi Jiboku is the president, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, NAPPS, Ogun State Branch. During a chat with TUNDE ATOBATELE, he lists the benefits of a privatesector led initiative to end the nation’s educational challenges. Excerpts:

curriculum development in Nigeria? It is the statutory function of the government, coordinated by NERDC, a federal government agency. The procedures are, some experts shall be invited for the curriculum development to be supported also by ministry officials both at the state and federal levels. Afterwards, the team will come up with the blue prints, of certain number of subjects to be taken in respect to levels etc. For instance, the basic class (Primary) is now limited to 10 subjects, inclusive, languages All these efforts are geared towards producing future leaders, just like what we have in the contents of Civic Education, religious studies etc. the issue of patriotism nowadays is very crucial to nations building, particularly, now that our children develop faster than our imagination. The more reason, the curriculum development is geared towards other salient areas that teach moral and self-sufficiency.

How would you react to the general opinion that Private Schools are only established for financial gains and not for qualitative education? I strongly disagree with that

notion. Private schools are not only established on the premise of financial gains, though the opinion is common, but I differ. I make bold to say that any private school proprietor worth his salt should be focused to standardise his school in a bid to redeeming the already battered system. Since public schools have been found wanting in several areas like infrastructural development, provision of conducive learning environment, learning equipment, counseling etc. It must then become necessary to note that the money or financial gains would go for the provisions of all this, thereby eroding all the

ment and education, the would be proprietor will not only add the needed values to the sector, but also, shall in no time begin to see his visions realized. You would believe with me that education itself is a business in social sciences, meaning that, as much as the proprietor would desire to record some certain financial gains at the end of the venture, he must see himself as a vermicular tool to adding and moulding the future of the nation through a well standardized educational system. Closely linked to this, is the need for the private school proprietor to be conscious of the fact that, his time, quality time is spared to stay, oversee, direct and orientate the focus of the school children. The proprietor should assume the duties of being the parents and teachers immediately the children are dropped for him in the morning till the parents or guardians come back for them after closing. Also, the teaching of morals should be paramount in the policy of a school proprietor. Academic without moral takes a child no where. For instance, at our school, we combine academic with moral teaching, even inclusive of counseling, which re focuses the mind and future aspirations of the students for a better tomorrow.

What attributes would you recommended for an aspiring school p roprietor? Above all attributes, that would be proprietor must have is passion for education. He must be very passionate about education, which should be his bedrock. Some of us that are referred to as successes today, because we followed our passion, which is education, when this is ascertained, all other qualities will fall into line. Total commitment and strong dedication to the system too are very essential. Through commit-

Albinos hunted for body parts in Malawi

lucrative black market exists for the body parts of albinos, who are believed by some to possess magical powers that can bring good luck. But as police in Tanzania crack down on the grisly trade, activists in neighbouring Malawi say attacks have spiked. Albinos are living in fear of being killed in Malawi, where their body parts are increasingly being sold for use in traditional rituals that promise to deliver wealth and power. Three albinos - people born without pigmentation - have been killed and mutilated in the southern African country in the first two months of the year, the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) reported. There were two albino killings in all of 2014 and one in 2013. One woman was found in January with her head, arms and legs cut off, the government said. Police are also searching for several individuals reported missing. “We are hunted like animals,” said APAM president Boniface Massah, who campaigns for the rights of Malawi’s 10 000 albinos. The body parts are often believed to be sold in neighbouring Tanzania, where more than 70 albinos have been killed since 2000. Tanzanian authorities announced in January that they

would crack down on the gruesome trade. They banned the activities of witch doctors who promise to bring clients good luck and fortune to prevent them from making ritual use of albino body parts. While the practice is condemned by the overwhelming majority of traditional healers, a lucrative black market exists for the body parts said to possess magical powers. A set of albino body parts - including hands and feet, genitals, ears, tongue and nose - sold for $75 000 in Dar es Salaam recently, according to Tanzanian police. But after Tanzania began its efforts to curb the practice, activists say the criminals moved to Malawi. “Those who are in the business of selling body parts of albinos ... have established a market in Malawi, because it has become tougher to do business in Tanzania,” Massah said. Police have not commented on the matter. Several people have been arrested in connection with the recent killings of albinos but they do not include any foreigners. The spike in the number of slayings has scared many parents of albino children to such an extent that they have taken them out of school, the activist said.

Nearly 10,000 people have died in the outbreak, the vast majority in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. On Monday the UN said that the struggle to contain the epidemic was reaching a “second phase”. UN experts say the spread of the disease in West Africa has dropped to almost 10% of what it was six months ago. Liberia in particular continues to have a low level of transmission, with only one new confirmed case in the week leading to 22 February. This compares to 34 in Guinea and 63 in Sierra Leone. But the UN special envoy on Ebola, David Nabarro, told AP that the international community should not become complacent as getting to zero cases was “the hardest part”.

As Area Commander, he received an award as the best Area commander in Delta State with a cash reward of N500,000 from then Governor, Chief James Ibori. As Director, Directorate of Police Education, he gave a face lift to all police school facilities in the country, which engendered high academic standards. He also got books worth over N20million from the United States of America for police schools and colleges in Nigeria. He instilled discipline in the

Police Mobile Force as Commissioner and gave face lift to dilapidated infrastructure. The Oyo State House of Assembly honoured him with a valedictory session for stamping out criminals from the state in the six month he served as Commisioner. In terms of crime control, infrastructural development, personnel motivation and repair of vehicles, his records in Oyo State remain unmatched. As Rivers State CP, Mbu refurbished six Armoured Personnel Carriers, 26 patrol vehicles and completely renovated the CP’s quarters. The Rivers State command headquarters at Moscow Road, wear a new look, thanks to him. Mbu is a recipient of the IGP’s Medal of Courage Award. Besides several others, he was also honoured as the BEST CRIME BURSTING POLICE CHIEF IN AFRICA by Security Watch Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2013. The Rivers State Police Command under him was given award as the Most Innovative Police Command in Nigeria. In October 2014 he was a recipient of the Accra-based Be-Great Security and Intelligence Academy for Ethical Policing and Professionalism. It is so unfortunate that the police hardly defend themselves against the tyranny of the public. People make comments and engage in acts that build a wall between them and the public despite desperate attempts by the police to promote police relations community. And it is rather appalling that a section of Lagos press will publish jaundiced and fabricated tales of people who only want to protect their personal interests. If Mbu keeps quiet in the face of accusations, it is because he is a gentleman and a thoroughbred professional officer. If you add the facts that Governor Ajumobi of Oyo State holds him in very high regards, and the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomole wrote a personal letter of commendation to him after supervising elections in Edo State, then the APC is crying wolf where it doesn’t exist. Both Governors are of the APC. Hon. Austen Yong is a publisher and National organising secretary of the Police Community Relations Committee, Nigeria.

Staving off diabetes the delicious way

Diabetics leg 1 Mrs. Bright with caregivers at a workshop

Representatives of diabetes professionals nationwide held an enlightenment workshop tagged ‘Diabetes Self-Management Workshop’ in Lagos recently. GBUBEMI GOD’S COVENANT SNR reports that with the eating of salmon fish, herring and sardines and other fruits, patients may just eat their way to good and stable health. Diabetes patients all over the world would be glad to learn that steady consumption of salmon, herring, and sardines and others fishes ensure the supply of omega-3 fatty acids that reduce the risk of Type-2 diabetes. This was the first of many dis-

Family seeks assistance over missing corpse

The gruesome murder of the Vice Chairman of Oteri Town in Ughelli, Delta State, Mr. Blessing Unuesefe early in February is still shrouded in mystery and disbelief, more so that his family is still denied access his corpse. JOE OGBODU reports from Warri.

It was a very bright morning when the Vice Chairman of Oteri Town in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr. Blessing Unuesefe, left his village for Warri. The day, however, turned dark on his return home, where he met some unknown people being entertained with the local gin by his neighbour, identified as Oriza,. Upon inquiry for the purpose of their visit, the visitors, who turned out to be agents of death,

coveries discussed at a workshop held at the Freedom Park in Lagos recently with over 300 persons living with the condition in attendance. The workshop, organised by Diabetes Alert, a Nigerian coordinating Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO), affiliated with international diabetes professionals worldwide, presented papers on diabetes care and practice, managing complications, education and support, prevention strategies and in different age groups. The programme coordinator, diabetes nurse specialist, Mrs. Vicky Bob-Manuel, announced that the workshop marked the beginning of counseling and

said they were looking for his boys, but Unuesefe denied knowledge of such boys. The visitors were not satisfied with his answer, and with the atmosphere already tense, one of them angrily asked him to sit on the floor, a directive Unuesefe declined to obey, insisting that he had done nothing wrong. In one swift move, one of them brought out a gun and fired a warning shot in the air and, on sensing danger, Unuesefe atCONTINUED ON PAGE 19

From 1980 through 2002 to 2014, the number of Americans with diabetes doubled and increased in all age groups. In USA, more than 23 million people have diabetes. 1/3 of these are undiagnosed. increased by about 1 million people per year (C.D.C and prevention 2008). By 2030, the number of cases is expected to exceed 30million. “Fifteen years ago, worldwide estimation of the prevalence of diabetes was 171 million people; by 2030, it is expected to increase to more than 360 million according to a World Health Organisation (W.H.O) 2008 report.” A representative from Delta State,Mrs. Onome Obaro, listed some challenges in dealing with diabetes: “One of the most challenging parts of diabetes management is the fact that patients have to make so many decisions every day on their own. Like what kind of meal is right for the moment, how much carbohydrate is in the meal? How much insulin should I take? What adjustments do I need to make?’ etc. And the situation is worse for patients who are not literate living in the rural and grassroots areas.” Vicky Bob-Manuel introduced the major topic of the day, and five speakers took time to explain research findings and ways to manage it among other topics. What is pancreas? It’s a gland near the stomach which secretes a fluid into the duodenum to help with food digestion. The pancreas has three major cells classified as beta, alphaand delta cells. Beta cell secretes insulin

which lowers the glucose level in the blood. When a person eats a meal, insulin secretion increases and moves glucose from the blood into the muscle, liver and fat cells. Alpha cell secrete glucagon which increases the sugar level in the blood during fasting or when the blood glucose level decreases and stimulates the liver to release stored glucose. When pancreas and the liver is sick, the ability to perform this function reduces drastically, and a condition called diabetes mellitus is diagnosed. Participants listened with rapt attention as speaker after speaker demystified the areas of diabetes in their categories. “One of the useful tips researchers have gladdened our hearts with,” Vicky said, “is that apart from the consumption of salmon, herring fish and sardines, a steady

intake of legumes, such as peanuts and soybeans, has been shown to markedly reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes; so it’s not all about

drugs.” A joint Vanderbilt University (Tennessee, USA) and Shanghai Cancer Institute (China) study observed 64,227 Chinese women for nearly five years. In that study, diabetes risk was reduced by 38% in women with high intake of a variety of legumes, but in particular, a high intake of soybeans was associated with a 47% risk reduction. There is diabetes, and there is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic non-communicable disease associated with disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, which has become an area of concern to all due to its increasing rate all over the world, especially in Nigeria. DM is a disorder in which blood sugar level are abnormally high because the body does not produce enough insulin to meet its needs. It is a metabolic disease, characterized by increase level of glucose in the blood (hypergly-

cemia) resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Predisposing factors The predisposing factors include Genetic Tendency, Autoimmune Response and Environmental Factors (e.g. viruses, toxins, tumor, inflammation) etc, Risk factors *Heredity, obesity, age (above 45), previously identified impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance, hypertension (higher than 140/90mmHg), history of gestaCONTINUED ON PAGE 20

tempted to run to safety, a move that enraged another of the assailants, who blocked his path, while another, with a gun, shot him point blank and he fell in a pool of his own blood. Like casts acting out a bad movie script, the assailants picked up his body and drove off, but returned a few minutes later, accompanied by men from the Ughelli Police Station, to search Unuesefe’s house. When they were done, they took him to the Central Hospital, Ughelli, where

he was confirmed dead and his corpse deposited at the mortuary, just like that. But the drama was not over: the assailants later went back to the hospital and took his corpse away, which is yet to be released to his family, as of the time of filing this report. Worried by the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder, the bereaved family petitioned the Inspector General of Police. The petition titled, ‘Petition against the callous and extra-judicial murder of Mr. Blessing Unuesefe, popularly known as Erhio, by the

Chairman and members of the Ughelli Vigilance Group and the disappearance of his corpse till date’ was dated February 25, 2015 and signed by D.O. Forae for Barr. Oghenejabor Ikimi, the family lawyer, who was briefed by Madam Edith Unuesefe, eldest sister to the deceased. According to the petition, “On the 3rd day of February, 2015, two Toyota Hilux vans, occupied by men of the Ughelli Vigilance Group, stormed the premises of Mr. Blessing Unuesefe at Oteri Town and demanded to see him

for a peace mission. “When the said vigilance group could not find Mr. Unuesefe in his house, chairman of the group, one Mr. Monday Ohwesiri, inquired from one Mr. Oriza, a neighbour to the late Unuesefe, about his whereabouts, stressing again that they were on a peace mission and not for trouble. “The said Mr. Oriza informed the said vigilance group that Mr. Blessing Unuesefe might have travelled to Warri the previous day. The chairman of the said vigilance group, thereafter, requested Mr. Oriza to entertain them,

which Mr. Oriza did, by providing them with some local gin. “While the chairman and his vigilance group members were enjoying themselves with the local gin, provided by their host, Mr. Blessing Unuesefe came and announced his presence, whereupon, the vigilance chairman asked Mr. Blessing Unuesefe of the whereabouts of his ‘boys’ and he replied that he had no ‘boys’. “The vigilance group chairman, thereafter, ordered Mr. Blessing Unuesefe to sit on the CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

‘boys’. “The vigilance group chairman, thereafter, ordered Mr. Blessing Unuesefe to sit on the bare floor, an order Unuesefe vehemently, refused to obey, thus, the said vigilance group chairman fired a gun shot at Mr. Blessing Unuesefe, who, thereafter, ran for dear life. He was however double-crossed and shot again by one Mr. Emmanuel Aruoture, a member of the said group, on the order of the vigilance group chairman. “The vigilance group chairman, thereafter, took Mr. Blessing Unuesefe into their Toyota Hilux and drove away, but, later returned with some men of the Ughelli Police Station to search the house of the victim, after which the victim was taken by them to the Ughelli Central Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by one of the doctors on duty and the body deposited at the said hospital morgue. “The corpse was later taken away by the said vigilance group to an undisclosed location, thus, making the whereabouts of the corpse unknown to family members of the deceased till date”, the petition stated. Ikimi, who is also the Executive Director of Centre for the Vulnerable and the Underprivileged (CENTREP), while condemning the circumstances surrounding the alleged murder by the said vigilance group chairman and his members, called on the IGP to investigate the alleged crime and bring the

perpetrators to book. According to him, men of the Nigeria Police Station, “A” Division, Ughelli, despite the complaint by the bereaved family and an eyewitness, have refused and/or failed to investigate the alleged crime, alleging that the police might have taken sides with the culprits. Ikimi, in a press release made available to the Daily Times, called on the Inspector General of Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the death of Unuesefe, with a view to prosecuting the alleged killers “as the said persons do not have the constitutional responsibilities to bear arms.”

include sweetish smell of ketones in the breath, and ketones in the urine, Kassmaul respiration (could be air hunger or deep sighing respiration due to acidosis-depressed respiration). Prevention A person at high risk for type 2 diabetes must live a healthy life, maintain normal weight or reduce weight by 7% client BMI, and must be involved in a moderate physical activities. Medical management The main goal of diabetes treatment is to normalise insulin activity and blood glucose level without hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) while maintaining a high quality of life, and reducing the development of vascular and neuropathic complication. Diabetes mellitus management has five components: Nutritional therapy, exercise, self-monitoring, pharmacology therapy and education Healthy diet: Diets that reduce the risk of complications include: Grains, e.g. wheat, corn-flour, millets, beans, brown rice, etc. Wheat bread, unripe plan-

tain, oatmeal/cereals, nuts/ Seeds, lean meat/ fish/chicken, garden egg, crackers, cucumber vegetables and two small carrots, fats from plants, etc. A-Z of foot care tips In ruling over your diabetes, you must: Inspect your feet everyday for cut, blisters, red spots and swelling. Use mirror to check the bottom of your feet or ask a family member for help if you have trouble seeing it, check for changes in temperature. Wash your feet everyday in warm (not hot) water, dry your feet well, be sure to dry in between the toes, do not soak your feet, do not check water temperature with your feet, use your elbow or thermometer. Keep the skin soft and smooth: rub a thin coat of skin lotion over the tops and bottoms of your feet, but not in-between your toes. Smooth corns and calluses gently: use a purnice stone to smooth corns and calluses. Trim your toe nails, file the edges with a nail file each week or when needed. Wear shoes/slippers and socks at all times: never walk bare-foot-

ed, wear comfortable shoes that fit well and protect your feet, feel inside your shoes before putting them on each time to make sure the lining is smooth and there is no object inside. Protect your feet from hot and cold: wear shoes at the beach or on hot pavement, wear socks at night if your feet get cold. Keep the blood flowing to your feet: put your feet up when sitting, wiggle your toes and move your ankles up and down for five minutes, two or three times a day; do not cross your legs for long periods and, especially, do not smoke. Check with your healthcare provider: patient may not feel pain of an injury, but must check his or her feet with the caregiver. Inform your caregiver right away if there is a cut, blister, or bruise that fails to improve within few days. ABC of personal health management A - Alone at least 30 minutes per day B- Be aware of your stress meter: Know when to step back and cool down. 1941 Britain launches Operation Claymore The British navy raided a German position off the coast of Norway and inside the Arctic Circle—the Lofoten Islands. The raid, code name Operation Claymore, proved highly destructive of its target—an armed German trawler—but ultimately a failure in achieving its objective, the capture of an Enigma decoding machine. The Brits severely damaged the trawler, called the Krebs, and killed 14 German sailors, took another 25 prisoner, and

Daily Times March 4, 1961 1936 Scottish racing legend Jim Clark born On this day in 1936, Jim Clark, who later dominate Formula One (F1) racing in the mid1960s and win two F1 world championships, was born in Scotland. Clark grew up on a farm and as a teenager began competing in local car races. Initially, Clark’s family was less-than-enthusiastic about his involvement in racing and Clark himself was shy and disliked being in the spotlight when he won. However, according to his biography at Formula1.com: “Goaded on by his friends, the reluctant racer began to take it more seriously, demonstrating an outstanding natural talent that amazed everyone, and certainly surprised the man himself.” In 1960, the Scotsman began his F1 racing career, competing for the British-based Team Lotus. (The team, which was established in the early 1950s, was dominant on the F1 circuit in the 1960s and 1970s, collecting seven F1 constructors’ championships and six drivers’ titles before it was disbanded in the mid-1990s.) Clark had some harrowing experiences early on. While competing in just his second Grand Prix, at Spa in Belgium, he narrowly missed hitting the body of a fellow competitor, who had been killed in a crash, on the track. Several laps later, Clark’s

teammate and friend Alan Stacey lost control of his car after being smacked in the face by a bird and died. The following year, at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Clark was involved in a collision with German driver Wolfgang von Trips of the Ferrari team. The accident, which was not considered Clark’s fault, killed the German driver and more than a dozen onlookers. Starting in 1962, things improved for Clark and for the next four seasons, he typically only ever lost a race due to mechanical problems. An oil leak prevented Clark from collecting the championship title in 1962; however, in 1963 he won seven out of 10 Grand Prix races and took home the championship. Another oil leak caused him to miss out on the championship crown in 1964, but the following year he won six out of 10 races and claimed his second world championship. Also in 1965, he gained fame in America when he won that year’s Indianapolis 500 after leading the race for 190 out of 200 laps. Clark collected his 25th Grand Prix victory in South Africa in 1968, passing the iconic Argentine driver Juan-Manuel Fangio’s (1911–1995) record of 24 Grand Prix wins. However, later that year, on April 7, 1968, Clark’s life was cut short at a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim in West Germany, when his car experienced

a tire failure and crashed. The 32-year-old Scotsman died with a record of 25 wins in 72 starts and 33 pole positions 1933 FDR inaugurated On March 4, 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States. In his famous inaugural address, delivered outside the east wing of the U.S. Capitol, Roosevelt outlined his “New Deal”--an expansion of the federal government as an instrument of employment opportunity and welfare--and told Americans that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Although it was a rainy day in Washington, and gusts of rain blew over Roosevelt as he spoke, he delivered a speech that radiated optimism and competence, and a broad majority of Americans united behind their new president and his radical economic proposals to lead the nation out of the Great Depression. Born into an upper-class family in Hyde Park, New York, in 1882, Roosevelt was the fifth cousin of Theodore Roosevelt, who served as the 26th U.S. president from 1901 to 1909. In 1905, Franklin Roosevelt, who was at the time a student at Columbia University Law School, married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, the niece of Theodore Roosevelt.

1944 The head of Murder, Inc. is executed Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, the head of Murder, Inc., was executed at Sing Prison in New York. Lepke was the leader of the country’s largest crime syndicate throughout the 1930s and was making nearly $50 million a year from his various enterprises. His downfall came when several members of his notorious killing squad turned into witnesses for the government. Lepke began his criminal career robbing pushcarts as a teenager. When he met Jacob “Gurrah” Shapiro while trying to rob the same pushcart, the two quickly became a formidable team. With Shapiro’s brute strength, the two established an extortion business, forcing pushcart owners to pay for protection. Lepke and Shapiro then joined Jacob “Little Augie” Orgen’s Lower East Side gang and turned their attention to bigger game. One by one, Lepke and the gang terrorized the local garment workers unions. They took over control of the unions and forced kickback payments from both the members and the employers. Soon, they had taken over the entire New York garment industry. In the 1920s, they added liquor bootlegging

Britain launches Operation Claymore destroyed the Germans’ local stockpile of oil. While the attack boosted British public morale temporarily, the Enigma machine still eluded the British military. The commander of the Krebs, Lieutenant Hans Kupfinger, threw it overboard before he was killed in the raid, but the Brits were able to recover documents that gave clues to the Enigma’s workings. British intelligence was able to piece together enough of the German coding system to track German naval activity for about five weeks.

The head of Murder, Inc. is executed and gambling and later began importing heroin and other narcotics. Lepke assembled a large team of hired killers to enforce his control. At one time, this team may have included as many as 250 hit men. Lepke also began to coordinate operations with the other big crime kingpins around the nation. With Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Dutch Schultz, Lepke virtually controlled organized crime throughout the country. In 1935, Schultz wanted to kill New York District Attorney Thomas Dewey, but Lepke, fearing that it would bring even more intense scrutiny and pressure from law enforcement, had Schultz killed instead. In order to generate more income and keep his hit men occupied, Lepke started Murder, Inc. in 1933. Murder, Inc. was authorized to kill anyone (approved by the syndicate) for a profit. With his hit squad protecting him from rivals and paid-off judges and officers keeping him out of jail, Lepke was America’s premier criminal until he was betrayed by his own men. Reportedly, he was able to order final hits on his betrayers from jail before his execution.

Wanted! More innovative clusters ÏÏÏTo move Nigeria from the present level to

a level where she will be able to compete with other nations successfully, clustering as a development strategy is the key. Clustering is a phenomenon whereby competing businesses gather together to generate competitive advantages. There are thousands of clusters around the world, including in Nigeria. Some of the famous Nigerian clusters are the Ikeja Computer Village, Lagos; Nnewi Industrial Cluster; Abakaliki Rice Cluster; Awka Blacksmithing Cluster; Lagos Cain Furniture Cluster; Oshogbo Tie and Dye Fabrics Cluster; Kano and Zaria Leather Clusters ; Bida Glass Cluster; Benin Sculpture Cluster; Aba Textile Garments Shoes & Plastics; etc. Over the years, a lot of work has been done in studying the various clusters and their contributions to industrialisation in Nigeria. A pioneer scholar, Prof Banji OyeyinkaOyelaran wrote Nnewi: an emergent industrial cluster in 1997, following an expedition led by him to Nnewi. (We remember, the late Dr Pius Okigbo who wrote the foreword to the book, saying that on reading the book he was so overwhelmed with emotion that he found it difficult to sleep throughout the night). Most clusters develop naturally either as a result of craftsmanship or culture e.g the Awka Blacksmithing Cluster or Oyo Calabash Carving Cluster. Others develop from the conglomeration of traders as it happened in Nnewi but there is nothing wrong in governments deliberately inducing cluster development. Experts in this area of industrialization gathered recently at National Summit on Raw Materials-based SME Clusters in Nigeria held at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. One of the resource persons, Prof Olufemi Bamiro, suggested the adoption of cluster initiative which he defined as organised efforts to increase the growth and competitiveness of clusters within an area ---involving cluster firms, research community and/or government. He noted that the main thrust of the initiative was not to create cluster from the scratch but to help existing ones to develop. The initiative is apt under the present circumstances that Nigeria finds herself because it will encourage pooling of resources, the exchange of insights, knowledge, and technology and in offering a structure that offers the incentives and flexibility to innovate among the various firms.

What’s NOUN all about? ÏÏÏThis letter is my second attempt

Minister of Science and Technology, Abdu Bulama

We believe that there is a need to deliberately employ the clustering alternative as one of the strategies to achieve industrialisation within a short period. And from the look of things it is a cheaper way of creating employment and generating wealth. However, there are clusters and there are clusters. Ikeja Computer Village and Nnewi Industrial Cluster, the two leading clusters in Nigeria are described as innovative and production clusters respectively, meaning that Ikeja Computer Village is the only innovative cluster in Nigeria. An innovative cluster is one that is able to churn out new products by improving on old ones; there are chances of inventions also. Why is it that Ikeja Computer Village is innovative while others are not? The answer is in the number of educated proprietors of businesses in the Ikeja enclave. A survey showed that 80 per cent of the business owners are graduates of either universities or polytechnics and all have adequate knowledge and skills on the computer. Also there are training institutions in and around the area, helping to improve the skills of the workers. The innovativeness of the Ikeja cluster should be replicated in all the clusters across Nigeria. Also, the clusters should be talking to one another such that they can supply raw materials to one another and equally buy finished goods from one another. The Kano and Kaduna states governments should find a way of improving the quality of leather produced by the Kano and Zaria leather clusters to make it acceptable to the Aba shoe and bag makers. By now, either Project Development Institute (PRODA) or the Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO) should be working with the Abakaliki Rice Cluster and other rice clusters to produce paper from discarded rice husks or cement from its ashes. Ikeja Computer Village is not the only cluster in Lagos; there is also the Process Equipment Fabricating Cluster in Ikotun axis pioneered by TechoQuip Limited in the early 1990s. The founders of most of the other fabricator companies in this area are graduates of TechoQuip Engineering School located in the same area. The Lagos state government should help these clusters to grow through various interventions so that it will in turn reap bountiful harvest of wealth, job creation and the attendant lower crime rate.

at contacting TIMESEARCH to please help throw more light on the issue of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and how I can benefit from it because I am still eager to study. My enquiries border on how to receive lectures from the university, when was its last convocation? I would also want to know more about the university generally before applying. Christopher Uvoribe P.O. Box 33218 Effurun Delta State At the National Open University of Nigeria Office, Victoria Island, Lagos, Uvoribe’s enquiries were tabled before one of the top officials who craved anonymity. The official had this to say, “January this year, made it the third convocation of the university. “In the open university system, you do not need lecturers for every course. All you need is to get people to write the course material.” According to the official, the former Vice Chancellor of NOUN and Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Professor Olugbemiro Jegede, brought the best lecturers from universities in Nigeria to write the course materials, which the university started on. “When you have that, what you need is your satellite system. We had already started using the satellite when NICOMSAT was launched and was working. The Obasanjo

government decided that we were going to use two areas to test if our communication satellite was working. They used tele-medicine and tele-education.” “In tele-medicine, they connected several hospitals, while for tele-education, they gave , NOUN to us and we connected 15 of our study centres.” According to the official, 2008 was the first time NOUN had e-examination all over Nigeria. People said it could not be done, and we insisted it could be done. The Vice Chancellor at that time made it possible, by challenging himself and Nigeria, and today, it is on record that we “NOUN” were the first in Africa to conduct e-examination in 40 study centres all over Nigeria for all our students.

What’s the fate of almajiri education? Please, TIMESEARCH, help contact the appropriate authorities in the Ministry of Education on what is going on with the almajiri schools in the country. The Universal Basic Education Commission is mute on this issue and that gives cause for concern for the beneficiaries of the school. What is the UBE commission doing to keep the almajiri schools alive? Alhaji Danladi Umoru P.O. Box 663 Rabah Sokoto The issue raised by Alhaji Umoru was tabled before one of the top officials of the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters Abuja, who disclosed that it was not true that the issue of almajiri schools in the country is forgotten: “Not even with the Universal Basic Education Commission. Early this year, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Dikko Suleiman, said that every Nigerian child is entitled to good and sound education.”

Okorie challenges Jonathan, Buhari to debate Akor Ejumene Abuja

ÏÏÏ

The presidential candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has challenged the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) to a debate organised by the Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG). “I invite General (Muhammadu) Buhari and President (Goodluck) Jonathan to join me at the newly rescheduled presidential debate on March 22, 2015, which is more important than their appearances at the Chatham House in London”, he added.

Okorie, who threw the challenge through a statement made available to Daily Times in Abuja and signed by the Director General of his campaign organisation, Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji, said that Nigerians were eager to watch the three leading presidential candidates’ debate on all important issues facing Nigeria and the people. He faulted the appearance of Buhari at the Chatham House, last week and the reported interest of Jonathan to participate in a debate with his APC counterpart on Nigeria in a foreign land, noting that the “2015 general election is about Nigeria and the people alone, the sover-

eignty of the country and the supremacy of Nigerian people on their affairs must be projected and defended at all times”. According to Okorie, “Now that General Buhari had spoken overseas and expressed himself in a progressive language, that resembles the UPP’s agenda, I ask him to reconsider his earlier decision not to participate in debates at home. And given the unexpected extension of time for the elections, I invite President Jonathan to join me in more debates than the one scheduled by the NEDG.” In previous statements, in the course of the 2015 presidential campaign, the UPP candidate had ex-

pressed disappointment at the decision of Buhari not to participate in debates, and had also accepted Jonathan’s invitation to Buhari to participate in any debate, at a place and time of his choice.

Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has described as ‘sadistic and unfortunate’, the All Progressives Congress’ relentless attacks on President

Goodluck Jonathan’s strategic policies to transform Nigeria to a better place. It also advised APC to stop deluding itself with the countless lies and deceitful promises to Nigerians. The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, enjoined the APC to be bold enough to accept that it has no positive agenda and lacked the capacity to ensure the unity, stability and prosperity of the nation. According to Metuh, “it is appalling that the APC has

become so anti-people that it would attempt to smear populist programmes of government, in a bid to score cheap political points. “We ask: why is APC uncomfortable with policies that promote transparency and accountability in the nation’s revenue system? He said, “Our advice to the APC is that they should stop deluding themselves with their countless lies and deceitful promises to Nigerians. “They should be bold enough to accept that they have no positive

agenda and lack the capacity to ensure the unity, stability and prosperity of the nation”, the statement said.

Experts predict slow economic pace until Q3

Adesola Akindele Some financial experts on Monday expressed concern that the 2015 general election would stall economic activities until the third quarter of 2015, adding that uncertainties in the nation’s economy would normalise by July 2015. Mr. Harrison Owoh, Managing

Director, H J Trust & Investment Ltd., said that economic activities would be determined by the outcome of the elections scheduled for March 28 and April 11. Owoh said that activities in the economy would not have normalised by second quarter if not for postponement of the elections.

s He said that the outcome of the general election would determine the direction of the economy, noting that investors would continue with their ‘wait and see’ attitude until July. Owoh said that the general election was strategic to economic growth and development for both local and foreign investors. He said there was a need for

the country to diversify in its economy and not to focus attention on only oil production to avoid repeat of its current experience. Mr. Emeka Madubuike, Managing Director, Compass Securities Ltd., said that market and economic stability would be determined by developments in the global oil market.

Cargo operators to raise tariff Mr. Basil Agboarumi, said he is not aware of any plans by ground handling companies to raise cargo tariff. The General Manager, Corporate Communications, SAHCOL said: “I am not aware of any plans to increase cargo tariff.” A source close to one of the firms said: “The plan to increase cargo tariff has reached advanced stage. This will become clearer this week. That may have informed plans to convoke a cargo summit to achieve stakeholders’ engagement, where issues concerning the need for operators to make sacrifices for the growth of the industry will be unveiled.” The Chief Commercial Officer of Nahco Aviance in a statement by the company earlier this week as said: “Air cargo is a major driver of the Nigeria’s economy and is in fact, also a potential high earner of foreign income for the nation as oil export earnings have been downward. There are sacrifices to be made in the days ahead from our estimation and we could all agree to the sacrifices that must be made to assure safety, security, efficiency.”

ÏÏÏRƒƆƏ Ƈ ƋƋ ƈ M ƈƏ ƒ ƋƑƆ Chukwuemeka Iwelunmo With fall in the value of the nation’s currency, Naira, there are indications that ground handling companies may be forced to increase cargo tariff for both in-bound and out-bound goods at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, investigations have revealed. The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Aviance Plc., Skyways Aviation Handling Company Limited (SAHCOL), and Precision Aviation Handling Company Limited (PAHCOL) are the leading ground handling companies in Nigeria. The decision to hike cargo tariff by the ground handling firms, it was learnt, is hinged on the rising value of the dollar, which is exchanging for over N210 at the parallel market. A source close to one of the firms said the resolve to increase cargo tariff is sequel to the increasing costs of operations, as the firms now spend more to procure spare parts, acquire operational equipment, as well as send staff for recurrent training overseas. They said that new equipment would be bought at the new exchange rate, which is heavily tilted against the naira. Investigations also revealed that the ground handling companies now pay more for apron passes, which was recently increased by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) from N50,000 to N150,000 at the Lagos Airport. The source hinted that ground

handling companies are groaning under huge charge regime, as FAAN in Port Harcourt now charge over N250,000 per vehicle as apron pass. “Concessionaires are also groaning under the yoke of exorbitant charges at the toll gates around the airport, while ground handling companies increased cargo tariff about three years ago and, since then, the naira had been devalued by more than 150 percent. “Since then, operators have experienced serious increment in operating costs, in some instances rising between 150 and 250 percent,” the source added. But, in a telephone interview, spokesman for NAHCO Aviance, Mr. Tayo Ajakaiye, could not confirm plans to increase cargo tariff. According to him, any plan to increase tariff would be done after wide consultations with all stakeholders. Ajakaiye said any information about increase in tariff now should be likened to mere conjectures until all stakeholders had been actively engaged in processes that would lead to price increases. He said NAHCO Aviance is operating within industry approved charges but, however, noted that ground handling companies are incurring rising operating costs, which has become obvious in the face of the rising exchange rate. He said if there are plans to increase such charges, NAHCO Aviance will carry out constructive industry engagement with relevant stakeholders before implementing any such plans. But, spokesman of SAHCOL,

Outstanding subsidy payments incapacitated fuel import– MOMAN Tony Nwakaegho

Obafemi

The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) says its members are handicapped to import refined petro products following the Federal Government’s non-payment of outstanding subsidy claims. Mr. Olawore Obafemi, Execu-

tive Secretary, MOMAN, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos. Obafemi said that the lingering fuel scarcity was caused by the inability of marketers to import petrol into the country since February. He said that the federal government had failed to pay the marketers the outstanding on the current foreign exchange rate with interest.

Olusola Adewumi, who spoke on converting your online communities to customers, compared social media to real estate saying, “You are the Landlord of any platform you own, and like the landlord, you have to find ways to build your tenants/attract visitors to your site’’. Social Media Marketer, Tosin Ajibade of Olorisupergal added, “Try as much as possible to engage your followers and then you can convert them to clients”. She went on to state that social media does not occur in a vacuum; you need to go with the trends. The Community Manager of Kaymu Nigeria, Abiola Fabio, who spoke on social media sales funnel, wrapped up the session, stating that each social media platform should be approached differently. Osagie assumes office as SPDC new helmsman

Okunbor

Sodiq Adekunle The new Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company, Mr. Osagie Okunbor, has assumed office, succeeding Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, who retired last Saturday after 36 years of meritorious service. Okunbor’s appointment had been announced in January

while he was serving as a Senior Advisor in Shell’s Upstream International Operated business in The Hague, Netherlands. The new Shell helmsman, who is also assuming the role of the Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, brings over 28 years of industry experience and expertise to his new role. “I’m delighted at the opportu-

nity to build on the progress we have made over the years. Shell continues to be a highly valued partner for progress in Nigeria and I’m looking forward to exploring more channels for fruitful collaboration with our stakeholders,” Osagie said as he took over from his predecessor weekend. Okunbor, is the third Nigerian MD of SPDC and Country Chair Shell Companies in Nigeria in a row. Mr. Basil Omiyi, assumed office as the Managing Director of SPDC in 2004, and also became Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria in 2008, the first Nigerian to hold both positions. In a farewell note, the outgoing Managing Director, thanked staff of Shell Nigeria and key external stakeholders for their dedication and support which enabled the company to collectively achieve the successes recorded during his tenure. “I am indeed proud to have made this remarkable journey with you and tremendously grateful to God for the privilege to have done so.” A graduate of Business Administration from the Univer-

sity of Benin, Okunbor, is an accomplished professional who has worked in Nigeria, the UK, Brunei and until now, the Netherlands. His previous assignments included Vice President, Human Resources for Shell’s Upstream Business in Sub-Saharan Africa and Vice President, Infrastructure and Logistics, Shell Nigeria. He is currently Senior Advisor in Shell’s Upstream International Operated business, based in The Hague, The Netherlands, from where he returns to Port Harcourt to take up his new role. Commenting on the appointment, Vice President Nigeria and Gabon, Shell Upstream, Mr. Markus Droll, said: “We are delighted to see another Nigerian at the helm of affairs in Shell Nigeria. Mr. Sunmonu worked very hard over these years – managing production and setting a new agenda in dealing with communities, government and other key stakeholders. We’re confident that Osagie will consolidate and build on the progress we have made in the past years.”

BlackBerry’s Chief Executive Officer, John Chen, has said that the company anticipates about 10 million units will be shipped in 2015, thereby returning the company to profitability and marking a 72 per cent increase over the 5.8 million units shipped in 2014. Chen statement is coming on the heels of the data released last Wednesday by research body-IDC, which revealed that BlackBerry was only to post year-over-year decline among the leading operating systems, falling -69.8 per cent from 2013 levels. The company expressed optimism of returning to its winning ways as BlackBerry shipped 2.1 million units in the past year, more than expected. Shipments saw no benefit from the Passport, Classic or other upcoming devices. Only partial benefit was seen from the Z3. In the question and answer portion of BlackBerry’s Q1 2015 earnings conference call, Chen expressed thus, “If we ship 10 million phones, we’ll be profitable on phones. That’s the model we’re going after.” Many analysts and other commentators have since cited the 10 million figure as an important benchmark and milestone that the company needs to achieve to continue its turnaround, not just in terms of company profitability, but also because Chen would be delivering on a stated business objective, continuing to live up to his reputation of setting reasonable goals and achieving them in stride. Also, 2014 marked a year of rationalization for the beleaguered platform, and by the end of the year, the company had revealed multiple enhancements to its platform and new device additions with the BlackBerry Passport and BlackBerry Classic.

African Independent Television (AIT) on 1st March at 11PM aired a documentary entitled: ‘Unmasking the Real Tinubu.’ The one-hour documentary was aimed at showcasing the various properties and companies across Lagos and other parts of the country owned by Tinubu whom it described as “Nigeria’s biggest landlord.” It also said that Tinubu was “charged with narcotics” in 1993 in the United States. Tinubu is a former governor of Lagos State and the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Tinubu is seriously angry with the documentary. His lawyer, Tunji Abayomi in a letter dated March 2, 2015 and addressed to the management of Daar Communications Limited, owners of AIT, gave the organization 24 hours to apologize and retract the publication or face a N20 billion litigation. The letter stated in part that “We are surprised that your media house – and we hold you responsible for the documentary – lacks simple ability to know what is justifiable for publication or understand that freedom of expression does not include deliberate defamation of character.” Abayomi went on to say that since Tinubu was not running for po-

litical office, he found the publication about his life “utterly absurd, disrespectful of media responsibility, ethically abusive, malicious and unbecoming of a public institution raised into prominence by shareholders’ funds.” Although AIT indicated that the documentary on Tinubu was sponsored without saying who the sponsor is, most pundits are speculating that it originated from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation., just as was the earlier documentary on Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential candidate of the APC where he was depicted as an unrepentant military tyrant unfit to govern a modern democracy. At no time in the history of Nigeria have hatemessage and mudslinging taken prominence in electioneering campaigns than in the current 2015 general elections. The two leading parties, the PDP and the APC, have been making efforts to tear each other apart with some of the most biting and deeply

penetrating tar-pouring both on each other as well as on their candidates at all levels but mostly on the presidential candidates. Globally, a political campaign is a deliberate and organized effort by political parties aimed at influencing the decision-making process of individuals and interest groups for the purpose of gaining their votes. This is done through information on what and how the parties and candidates would positively affect the lives of the people if elected into public office. Unfortunately however, some party officials tend to deviate from canvassing support based on issues to assassinating the character of their rivals through mud- pouring. And this is not unique to Nigeria. Without taking us far too back in history, in the 2008 American presidential election, some extremists from the Republican Party highlighted the ‘Hussein’ and ‘Obama’ aspects of Barack’s name and tried to portray him as being related to Osama Bin Laden and therefore linking him to terrorism. They distrib-

uted 28 million copies of fear-mongering video to see how they could swing states. Here in Nigeria, hate messages have been the hallmark of the leading opposition since 1999. From the time of Action Congress to when they merged with Action Congress of Democrats (ACD) to form Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) down to the current APC, the opposition has done everything to instigate Nigerians against President Goodluck Jonathan as well as belittle the dignity of his office. While APC officials try to portray their party and its leaders as saints, they have invested so much resources and time, especially using the media both conventional and the social media, to portray Jonathan and the PDP as demons. There is no derogatory name the APC and its promoters have not called the PDP and its leaders, the worst insulted and most criticised being President Jonathan. Moon died in September 2012, aged 92, of complications from pneumonia, and his 72-year-old widow Hak Ja Han presided over Tuesday’s ceremony. The church’s mass weddings began in the early 1960s. At first, they involved just a few dozen couples but the numbers mushroomed over the years.

in the build-up to the 2015 general election. For the past twelve months, the APC has taken PDP and President Jonathan to the cleaners. They have called Jonathan clueless president, kindergarten leader, treasury looter, sponsor of book haram and so much more. The problem the APC is facing currently is that the party wasted its bullets before the real war began. While the APC was busy insulting the PDP and its leaders and candidates, especially Jonathan, the PDP kept quiet while assembling its arsenals and waiting for the last battle. Now that the final whistle is blown, the APC has exhausted its weapons and the PDP has therefore moved in and taken the APC captive. A few weeks before the election, a combination of Gov. Ayo Fayose and Fani Kayode have unleashed unprecedented attacks on the image of Buhari, Tinubu and other APC leaders making hundreds of disclosures that have shocked even the most ardent supporters of APC. Sierra Leone is to receive more than $80m (£52m) immediately to help the country end the Ebola outbreak and recover from its effects. The IMF has pledged a $187m financial aid package for Sierra Leone to support the country’s struggling economy. World leaders are meeting in Brussels on Tuesday to talk about Ebola and long-term plans to fight the disease. But the UN special envoy on Ebola, David Nabarro, told AP that the international community should not become complacent as getting to zero cases was “the hardest part”.

would crack down on the gruesome trade.

India, Pakistan renew talks ÏÏÏ

India’s foreign secretary has met with his Pakistani counterpart on Tuesday in Islamabad for the first high-level talks between the rival neighbours since relations broke down late last year. Cameras captured India’s Subrahmanyan Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Aizaz Chaudhry smiling as they shook hands and spoke along with delegations from each country. Jaishankar was also expected to meet with Sartaj Aziz, the foreign affairs and national security adviser for Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. India and Pakistan were due to hold talks last August, but India canceled the meeting citing a meeting between Pakistan’s ambassador to New Delhi and Kashmiri separatists. Tensions further escalated with several clashes between soldiers the two countries in Kashmir, an area that has been the subject of two wars between India and Pakistan.

Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP who has continued to insist on issues-based campaigns last week called APC a party of one week one lie. Metuh said APC and its leaders are churning out lies in promises and figures deliberately aimed at misleading Nigerians, even when they know they cannot achieve what they are promising. Now get the teeth of the matter. While Jonathan’s re-election campaign is based on his performance in the past four years, the APC is propelling Buhari on the basis of his integrity since there is not much to refer to in terms of Buhari’s past achievements. L3 Interview

My husband is a very generous man Shade Okoya

Isaac Oguntoye

going home after the day’s job is another kind of fun for me. So, I’m always looking forward to either being in the office or at home. It is just about me being happy with what I do.

The Union between billionaire business man and chairman of Eleganza Group of companies, Rasaq Akanni Okoya, the Otun Aare of Lagos and his wife Shade Okoya who runs some of his prime businesses is without a doubt, a study on enduring marriages. And why not? Not many people gave them a chance. Some wondered at their age difference while others questioned the motive behind the union. While Chief Razaq who is also the chairman of RAO investment property company limited is 75, Shade who holds a honorary doctorate degree in Business Management and Corporate Leadership from the European American University is 37. But 16 years after, they have both proved pundits wrong, showing that theirs is a match made in heaven. They both open up about their marriage, business and lifestyle How do you feel celebrating your husband at 75? I’m very happy. Actually the birthday was in January but we went to Saudi Arabia for prayers. On our return, the Pat Utomi Foundation which is the Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL) said they wanted to give him an award, which is why we’re here today to celebrate him. How do you feel seeing him honoured for his works as a businessman? It is a well-deserved honour. As you can see from what people are saying, he’s a hardworking man and he has contributed to the growth and the development of the country. No doubt you are the closest person to him, and so many people have said so many things about him, tell us one thing you think people do not know about him? He’s a very simple man. And I don’t think there is anything that people do not know about him He’s a cheerful person as well who always wants his friends around him. Also he is generous to a fault. He is kind, a good father and a good husband. If you have the opportunity to marry him again, would you? Of course I will choose him all over again. I’m happy to be with him and I will do this all over again without hesitation. In your 16 years of marriage to him, what are some of the things you learnt from him that has rubbed off on you? My husband is my mentor and I think I have learnt a lot from him in terms of hard work. I know that when you work it pays off because you get to enjoy the fruit of your labour. So, I think I learnt that from him. Again, he is a very humble man. Irrespective of your age or who

What does fashion means to you and how would you describe your fashion sense? Fashion means comfort to me. But I guess people who see will be in a better position to determine if I have any fashion sense. That is not for me to say. Would you describe yourself as a fashionable person? I don’t know but my children tell me that often. So, I think I’m fashionable. And I love to look good. What determines what you wear? The occasion, my mood and I make sure I dress to fit where I’m going to. How do you keep fit? I’m always working. I think that’s part of the things that helps me. And I love to cook. So eating and working, everything just work hand-in-hand.

Chief and Mrs Okoya

you are, he respects you even if you are younger than him. He’s a hardworking man, trustworthy, loyal and always there for people. He’s a friend for all season. How would you described him as a businessman? Chief Rasaq Okoya is a very good and shrewd businessman. He started with little or nothing that he got from his mother who loaned him the 70 pounds he started business with. A 70pound loan in those days is what has turned into the business empire you see today. So you can imagine all the hard work he has put in. Would you agree that you are the good business woman you are

today by association with your husband? I suppose so. My husband instilled good work ethics and business skills in me. He’s hardworking. I met him doing business, so I had no choice but to try and fit in. He’s my mentor and I have no doubt learnt a lot from him. So, I think I’m happy doing what I do.

Obviously Chief Razaq is a very businessman judging by the number of businesses he runs. How did you both make time for each other? We travel a lot together and we have fun whenever we travel. And when we are here, we work together as well.

What has been the secret of your marriage? 16 years down the line, I think I can talk about marriage now. My husband is a happy man, so I have no choice but to allow joy and happiness to always take centre stage in my home. Also I believe the secret has been the love that we share and the fact that we are very fond of each other and I respect him a lot.

How do you cope with the challenges of being a mother, wife and also a businesswoman? I think everything is working together because my children too come to the factory once in a while when they come back from school or anytime they are on holidays or during the weekends. And like I said before, I love what I do, so I don’t see it as work. I enjoy what I do and

We need more technical schools – Razaq Okoya

Sir how do you feel today being hosted by CVL in celebration of your 75th birthday? I feel great and I’m very happy about the honour.

As a successful businessman, what advice would you give to those looking up to you? Work hard, be determined in whatever you’re doing and by the grace of God with good health, one will get there. When you started out in business, did you envisage that you will be this successful? When you’re a determined man, definitely you should expect success. When I went to those countries and saw how they produce shoes and other things and here in Nigeria, nobody was doing such a thing, I became more determined to venture into it and be big

one day.

What would you say is the secret of your youthfulness? If you take good care of your health and you work hard, think straight, not wrongly, you will be happy and that tells on your physical being At 75, there is obviously no slowing down for you. You still go to your factories. How are you able to cope with the stress and rigours of factory work? Well, it has been part of me since I started out and it is still a part of me. I enjoy production. By the grace of God, Nigeria will soon realize that production is the root of a robust economic boost. The youths have no jobs, why not teach them the technical aspect. Give them more technical schools and by

so doing, they will end up as employers of labour themselves. Insisting on only University education alone will not help. A lot have their destinies in attending technical schools. There are no more good mechanics, we have no trained personnel work in factories. If you advertise for an electrician, you cannot get a good one. Even in building, to lay ties, you have to rely on artisans from the neighboring countries. All these will not help the economy. We have to change our orientation as a people.

What is your progression for Eleganza? We have 32 hectares of factory coming up and over 2000 employed already. I’ve been to China several times and I’m impressed with what I saw. And we are determined to do as much as they do here.

What do you wish your husband at 75? I wish him all the very best. He’s a hard worker, he’s a generous man, happy man and he loves people, so what else will you wish such a man. I wish him long life and that God should give him the good health he wants. I want every other thing to fall in place and work out for good for him.

Be irresistible with smokey eyes Smoky eye make up tutorial

Makeup for smoky eyes

Oyinkansola Olufowora Like the little black dress, the smokey eye is a timeless sexy make up trend unfortunately, too many women skip it altogether, because it seems too hard to create! But with the right tools and a little know how, you can be on your way to being a professional. A smokey eye design varies from sultry to dramatic to classic and a host of others.

Steps to a perfect smokey eye Step 1 A smokey eye is done with one color of eye shadow. Brown, grey, or black are good choices. Dark plum or navy eyeliners should match,

Step 2 Apply a thin layer of foundation across your lids. Better still use a primer or concealer. This will help the makeup stay on longer and appear bolder and more vibrant. Then, sweep on a fleshcolored shadow or powder. Step 3 Using your pencil, trace your lash line. Always work from the inside and get thicker towards the end, flicking for a fancy and cat-eye fashion. If you want your smoky eyes to look especially frisky, draw on your inner rims as well, this will give your eyes more wow factor and definition. Remember to blend with a Q tip or cotton bud, heaviness can make it look clumsy and unfeminine.

Mascara

Step 4 Start by sweeping on a layer of shadow close to the lash line with your eye Smoky eyes shadow brush, diffusing the eyeliner. Use your lightest color here, a touch of your brow bone. By accentuating the white or pearl shimmer is great. With a highest point on your face you are bringlight hand, and a slightly darker color, ing out your facial features and really cover the middle of your lid fanning out complimenting your eyes towards the crease. Step 5 Trace along your crease and socket then flick out towards the corner of your brow bone with a much darker color, this is a sexy, shouldering look and gives your eyes heaps of definition and appeal Step 6 Apply a nude shimmering color to

Step 7 With a soft brush, blend away any harsh lines to make it a more soft ‘smoky’ effect. Step 8 With a fan brush, sweep just under your eye to catch any fallout or powder that may have collected here

Step 9 Take a white eye pencil and line your waterline up to the tear-duct, this will make your eyes appear wider, brighter and fresher and make you look more awake and healthy, also whiter eyes look more beautiful as well as bring out the color of your iris. Step 10 Apply two coats of mascara on curled lashes to polish the smoky eye look and you are done

Back to your roots Nkarenyi Ukonu You might think that wearing natural hair is impossible and unachievable especially in a world where the craze for weaves and extensions has eaten deep into the beauty world. Deciding to go natural is a big decision for many women these days but when you do make the decision, the journey to natural hair can be a liberating experience. Five reasons to go for the big chop Ï It is an affordable way to change your look. Ï It is inexpensive to maintain Ï It is low maintenance. Once you find your look you can just wake up, ruffle it up a bit and you are good to go. Ï You can give your hair and scalp a break from all the chemi cals. Ï Breakages will be minimised, only if you treat your hair right. The key to natural hair is patience. You have to be willing to give your hair a

chance to grow. Here are some safe tips to maintain healthy, natural hair. The first thing to do is what is often referred to as the big chop, when all of the chemically treated portions of your hair is cut off. This is the best way to grow your hair in the style that you desire. As your hair grows, maintain a hair routine. Wash your hair at least twice a week with a shampoo that contains no alcohol and follow with a protein based conditioner to help restore the proper balance in your hair and promote growth. Trim your hair periodically, say, every six months. Keep in mind that during your growth stage, you may experience more hair shedding than normal. This is common and will subside as your hair continues to grow. Stay away from heat as much as possible. In the event that heat must be used on your hair, you should always use a heat protectant. Use hair serum to maintain shine, gloss

and keep hair hydrated. If you must use hair cream, stay away from products that will weigh down the hair, making it look limp. Alternatively, use shea butter. As much as possible, avoid using a comb to detangle especially after washing your hair as it tears right through all of your knots. Fingerdetangling by finger combing the section, starting from the ends and slowly working up toward the root. You may choose to wear protective styles such as twists, braids, weaves, updos or any style that helps to protect the ends of the hair. Protect your hair at night with a satin bonnet and sleep on a satin pillowcase. This will ensure that the moisture you’ve applied on your hair is retained. Silk or satin, however, have a natural sheen that allows strands to gently glide over the fibers. Cotton fibers are absorbent and will literally suck your hair dry of all its moisture. Nse Sule

most expensive shoes ever made 8 10 9

Iconic shoe designer, Stuart Weitzman is known for his sumptuous style and sophisticated designs using rare and unique materials. Having designed shoes for celebrities and Oscar red carpet runways, he is also known for creating some of the world’s most expensive shoes. Packed full of diamonds and rare gemstones, these shoes will not only dazzle your eyes, it is sure to drain your wallet. 10. Stuart Weitzman diamond dream stilettos at $500,000 No doubt diamonds are really a girl’s best friend, and these shoes are simply an epitome of what it means to be dripping of diamonds. Created for the feet of Dream girls actress, Anika Noni Rose for the 2007 Oscars, the Diamond Dream stilettos are delicate but scream glamour. Valued to be the least expensive of the famous designer’s Oscar sparkly creations, they are studded with 1,420 diamonds. 9. Original Ruby Slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” at $612,000 The last pair of Judy Garland’s famous ruby slippers from “The Wizard of Oz” was sold at an auction house to a private owner for a whopping $612,000. Another pair was set for sale in late 2011. With a starting bid of $2 million, they failed to receive any bids. The third pair is on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of History in Washington, D.C., where you can drool over the fancy footwear free-of-charge. A fourth pair was part of the collection at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minn., but was stolen in a smash-and-grab heist in 2005, and is yet to be recovered. 8. Stuart Weitzman “Marilyn Monroe” Shoes at $1 million These elegant, nude evening shoes are adorned with a satin rose, which surrounds a cluster of shimmering Swarovski crystals. But these aren’t just any Swarovski crystals, they’re a pair of earrings once owned and treasured by late actress, Marylin Monroe. Actress Regina King wore the shoes to the 2005 Oscars, when she was nominated for her role in the movie “Ray.” After the red carpet event, Weitzman replaced Marilyn’s earrings with replicas and auctioned off the shoes in a Celebrity Rags 4 Charity Riches auction, where the shoes sold for $1 million. 7. Stuart Weitzman Retro Rose Pumps at $1 million These retro heels Weitzman designed in a 1940s style with a signature t-strap of that era are valued at $1 million with 500 carats of 1,800 Kwiat diamonds. 6. Stuart Weitzman Platinum Guild Stilettos at $1.09 million These gorgeous strappy stilettos were styled from platinum fabric and adorned with a whopping 464 diamonds supplied by jeweler, Kwiat. The round and pear-shaped diamonds were designed to be removable so they could also be worn as jewelry. These were the first million dollar shoes to be created for an Oscar nominee to wear on the big night.

3. Stuart Weitzman Cinderella Slippers at $1million Inspired by the peasant-turned-princess, Cinderella, these sparkly shoes were made of Italian leather. The ankle and toe straps were crafted into an intricate lacelike design created from 565 Kwiat diamonds in platinum settings. The right slipper hosts a rare 5 carat amaretto diamond that is valued at more than a million dollars and provides the only sliver of color in the shoes. The 4-inch clear stiletto heels were designed to disappear, leaving the masses of glittering diamonds in the limelight. 2. Stuart Weitzman Rita Hayworth Heels at $3 million The aptly named Rita Hayworth heels were inspired by a favorite pair of earrings worn by the late actress. These beauties are worth a staggering $3 million, but they’re not for sale, they’re owned by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, Rita Hayworth’s daughter 1. Harry Winston Ruby Slipper at $3 million In 1989 Ronald Winston, son of the famous jewelry designer, Harry Winston, wanted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” in the most opulent way. After two months of tediously placing 4,600 rubies, the House of Harry Winston unveiled its own version of the famous ruby slippers from the classic film. The over-the-top shoes not only boast 1,350 carats of rubies, but also 50 carats of diamonds to really put them in a category of their own. With a price tag of $3 million, they are far more lavish than the original shoes, which were adorned only with simple red sequins.

5. Stuart Weitzman Ruby Slippers at $1.6 million The sophisticated stilettos were designed with a cherry red insole, replete with a delicate upper of red satin and encrusted with an impressive 642 Burma rubies and inspired by the movie, Wizard of Oz. The settings alone contain half a pound of platinum and boast a total carat count of 123.33. 4. Stuart Weitzman Tanzanite Heels at $2 million These stunning shoes were a design collaboration between Weitzman and high-end jewelry designer, Eddie Le Vian. The evening sandals were crafted from silver leather and topped with an ankle strap that more closely resembles a necklace worn by royalty than an ankle holster. Encrusted with 185 carats of gorgeous bright blue tanzanite gemstones and embellished with 28 carats of diamonds, the ankle strap is crowned with a dangling 16 carat tanzanite drop, more like a pendant on a necklace. A delicate toe strap trimmed with tiny diamonds rounds out the design.

1 ...And the most expensive male shoes ever made That would be a pair of Tom Ford sparkly evening pumps made of expensive mesh. The diamond encrusted shoes was made for the host of America’s got Talent show and now soon to be ex-husband of Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon who wore it to the two episode season finale of the show in 2014. Never one to shy away from putting diamonds on things, Jason of Beverly heels, a noted gemologist covered the pair of shoes created by Tom Ford with over 14,000 round white diamonds, roughly 340 carats and set into white gold. The entire process took nearly a year to complete. At $2 million, it makes them the most expensive pair of shoes a man has ever worn. Nick Cannon’s diamond encrusted Tom Ford shoes

BUSQUETS eyes ‘decisive’ Clasico

S

ergio Busquets says he hopes the upcoming Clasico against Real Madrid proves to be a vital encounter for his Barcelona side. The Catalans are now just two points behind La Liga leaders Madrid after Carlo Ancelotti’s men dropped

two vital points in the 1-1 home draw with Villarreal at the weekend, while Busquets is hopeful the clash between the Spanish giants in three weeks will be decisive. “Let’s hope the Clasico is crucial for us because we are currently at a disadvantage in that we have to win ev-

ery game, so when Madrid slip up we must make the most of it,” he said. Busquets also looked forward to today’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg clash with Villarreal at El Madrigal and feels that Barca are in the driving seat following their 3-1 victory in the first leg.

st Vice President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi has reflected that the not-too-impressive outing of the U-17 National Team, Golden Eaglets, at the 11th African U-17 Championship in Niger Republic is a definitive wake-up call for other National Teams. The Eaglets, 2013 runners-up and reigning champions of the world, plummeted to a fourth –place finish and the continental tourney. Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Akinwunmi told officials of the U-20

National Team, Flying Eagles, to work together and assiduously to achieve glory at the 19th African Youth Championship kicking off on Sunday. “No man knows it all. That is why team-work is important in every project like this. Football is also a team game, so the effort of everyone in the mix is important for victory. “I know everyone is saying that you have a strong team, but the other seven teams coming to Senegal are also strong. We must take it one match at a time and give each match our very best,” he said.

ETIM CAUTIONS KESHI OVER EAGLES’ JOB Ojieva Ehiosun

F

ollowing comments from Stephen Keshi’s agent on the issue of his contract, former Super Eagles midfielder, Etim Esin, has called on the out-of-contract Eagles manager, Keshi, to save his coaching career from shame by deciding on what to do at this critical time. The erstwhile Calabar Rovers utility player said that some people are out to sabotage Keshi’s efforts, and faults the idea of a national team coach reporting to a foreign Technical Director.

Etim added that with such a scenario, a conflict of interest has taken center stage in the contract deal. “Why is the NFF treating Keshi like that, why is it taking the NFF so long to renew his contract. Which indigenous coach has achieved as much as Keshi has achieved for Nigeria, tell me? There are too many interests in this contract issue. “I think it is left for Keshi to decide what he wants for himself. He has his destiny in his hands and he should either save his career from doom or leave NFF to their fate.

are in for a tough time, as there are serious indication of mass exodus of athletes and coaches to other states as a result of better welfare packages. The popular Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City which is known for its daily sporting activities now looks like a graveyard as there was no sign of National Sports Festival preparations insight. Most of the athletes and coaches who spoke on strict condition of anonymity said Governor Adams Oshiomhole administration has finally killed sports in the state. They said angrily that some of them are already on their way out to other states that knows their worth.

“You can see that nothing is happening here, Edo State has lost that crown of glory they use to have in sports. Since the exit of former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, sports in the state went into extinction. We have less than two months to the National Sports Festival, and yet there is no sign of preparation here. What is happening here now is political campaign and politicking and only God will rescue us from the hands of these politicians. “Over here, some of us are not accorded our respect, and the director in the sports ministry is not helping issues. They are only interested in what will line their pockets.”

Ikhana said his side will work very hard to take full advantage of the first fixture at home to earn a decent result before the decisive leg in Alexandria, Egypt. “The Egyptian side, Smouha SC are certain to be a hard nut for us to crack with the little I know of the side. igeria international and Super Falcons’ Ifeanyi Chiejine has stated that she’s ready to make a comeback to the national team after confirming she is fit again. Experienced Chiejine has previously played for SSVSM-Kairat Almaty in the Kazakhstani Championship, FC Indiana in USA’s W-League, PK-35 Vantaa in Finland and Zvezda Perm of Russia. She was part of the Super Falcons at the 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Cups and also played an important role in the national team at the 2000 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

“I got injured playing for Nigeria and the nation has helped me throughout the injury phase, but right now I’m fit again. I’ve been training with the Lagos State male football team preparing for the 19th National Sports Festival,” she said. “I’ve been training since late 2014 and I’ve played series of friendly games with the male team which has really helped me a lot. I’m fit and ready to go.” Chiejine expressed her desire to wear the ‘Green and White’ shirt of Nigeria any time she’s called up. Some local clubs have shown interest to sign the experienced Super Falcons player and top among them is Confluence Queens of Lokoja.

KANU:

!

NIGERIA’S most decorated footballer

N

wankwo Kanu (OON), born August 1, 1976, is a retired Nigerian footballer who played as a striker. He was a member of and later captained the Nigerian national team for 16 years from 1994 until 2010. Born in Owerri, Nigeria, Kanu began his career at Nigerian league club Federal Works FC, before moving to Iwuanyanwu Nationale. After a notable performance at the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 1993 at Japan he was signed by Dutch Eredivisie AFC Ajax in 1993 for 207,047 euros. He made his Ajax debut the following year and went on to score 25 goals in 54 appearances. Kanu also came on as a sub in Ajax’s 1995 Champions League final win over AC Milan. In 1996, Ajax sold Kanu to Serie A side Internazionale for around $4.7 million that summer and he captained the Nigerian team that won gold at the Olympics. He scored two late goals in the semi-finals against powerhouses Brazil to overturn a 2–3 scoreline into a 4–3 win in extra time. Kanu was also named African Footballer of the Year for that year. However, soon after returning from the Olympics, Kanu underwent a medical examination at Inter, which revealed a serious heart defect; he underwent surgery in November 1996 to replace an aortic valve and did not return to his club

until April 1997. In interviews, Kanu frequently cites his faith as a Christian, and has often mentioned this trying time of his career as an occasion when he prayed to God. Kanu’s experience also led to his founding the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young African children who suffer heart defects and whose work was expanded to provide aid for homeless children in 2008. Kanu is known throughout Africa for his philanthropic work. Senior career In February 1999, after just twelve games and one goal for Inter, Kanu was signed by Arsenal for approximately £4.15 million. His debut for Arsenal, against Sheffield United in the FA Cup, was a highly unusual match. With the score 1–1 and ten minutes to go, the United goalkeeper, Alan Kelly, kicked the ball out of touch so that treatment could be given to an injured player. When the ball was thrown back into play by Ray Parlour, although it was intended for Kelly, Kanu was unaware of the circumstances. Thinking it to be an attacking move, he chased the throw-in down the right wing unchallenged, and centred the ball for Marc Overmars, who promptly scored to make the match 2–1. Immediately after the match Arsenal manager Arsène

Wenger offered to right the error and replay the match; in the end, Arsenal won that match 2–1 as well. Despite the events overshadowing his debut, Kanu’s career was quickly revived at Arsenal. He scored his first goal for the club in the next round of the cup against Derby County, coming off the bench to net the only goal of the game. He quickly became known for his goalscoring prowess from the bench, scoring important goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa as a substitute. He became very popular among the fans for his two-fingered salute – something that he later explained was based on the team’s nickname, The Gunners – which started in 1999 against Middlesbrough. Kanu was named African Footballer of the Year for the second time in 1999, and in 1999–2000 he scored 17 times in 50 matches for the Gunners, including a hatrick in fifteen minutes against Chelsea to turn a 2–0 deficit to a 3–2 victory. In August 2001, Arsenal rejected a bid from Fulham of “around £7m” for Kanu. However, Kanu’s appearances for Arsenal gradually became less frequent, particularly after the emergence of Thierry Henry as Arsenal’s first choice striker, when Kanu was mainly used as a substitute. Despite this, Kanu won the Double with Arsenal in 2002, an

FA Cup in 2003 (as an unused sub) and the Premier League title in 2004. His final season brought 10 league appearances – the minimum to qualify for a title winner’s medal. In all he played 197 games for Arsenal (nearly half of them as a substitute), scoring 44 goals. In the summer of 2004, after his contract with Arsenal ended, he moved to West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer. In 2008, Kanu was voted 13th in the “Gunners’ Greatest 50 Players” poll. In his two years at The Hawthorns he made a total of 58 appearances – 16 of them as a substitute – and scored nine goals. In the summer of 2006, Kanu played as a guest for Arsenal in Dennis Bergkamp’s testimonial game, the first match to be played in Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium. The game was tied 1–1 when Kanu scored the winning goal, making him the third person to score in the stadium. At the end of the match, Kanu joined the rest of the Arsenal side in hoisting the retired Dutchman on their shoulders as fans gave him a standing ovation. He remains a popular figure at Arsenal, being applauded when he appears at the Emirates Stadium. Kanu was a free agent following his departure from West Brom, and he signed for Portsmouth on a one-year deal shortly before the start of the 2006–07 season.

Nwankwo Kanu displays his Lifetime Achievement Award. In his second season at Portsmouth, Kanu scored in both the FA Cup 1–0 semi-final win against West Bromwich Albion and the 1–0 win in the final against Cardiff City, earning him a third FA Cup winner’s medal. International career Kanu was a member of the Nigerian national team from 1994 to 2010, making his debut in friendly against Sweden. Earlier on at the start of his career, Kanu was instrumental in Nigeria’s overall success at the 1993 FIFA U-17 tournament in Japan and their subsequent 2–1 victory over Ghana in the final. With five goals, he was second jointscorer in the tournament with Peter Anosike and Manuel Neira, behind compatriot and Captain Wilson Oruma. As well as winning the Olympic gold in the football event at 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Kanu participated in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups. On June 24, 2010, Kanu ended his international career following Nigeria’s exit from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Nigeria lost their group matches against Argentina and Greece, before a 2–2 draw with South Korea ended their stay in the tournament. He won 86 caps and scored 13 goals for the country and was the joint most capped Nigerian player of all-time alongside Muda Lawal, until Joseph Yobo surpassed both players in 2012, winning his 87th cap.

which begins tomorrow and ends on Saturday. Clarke said: “I’ve worked so hard for so many years to be a part of the team and to be honoured in this way is a great privilege. “Hopefully it will be a very successful

NADAL WINS IN BUENOS AIRES TO EQUAL RECORD

S

pain’s Rafael Nadal won a record-equalling 46th career clay-court title with a 6-4 6-1 victory over home favourite Juan Monaco in the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. Nadal moved on to the same number of titles as Monaco’s compatriot Guillermo Vilas. The start of the match was delayed because of rain and there was a further hold-up at 1-1 in the opening set. But once play got started, the 28-year-old swept to an easy victory. “I had the hope of winning here and I prepared very well for this so it’s objective achieved,” the nine-time

French Open champion said. It was his first final since winning at Roland Garros last June, having been hampered by a wrist injury and appendicitis in the second half of 2014, and was his 65th career title. Nadal got the first break in the seventh game when the Argentine netted a service return. He went on to break serve three more times for a comfortable victory in one hour and 26 minutes. Nadal moved up to third in the world rankings after the victory, overtaking Britain’s Andy Murray, who is now fifth, with Japan’s Kei Nishikori fourth.

SAYS RETURN TO ROADS WAS SCARY

O

lympic champion Dani King says it was “scary” to ride on roads again, after suffering five broken ribs and a collapsed lung in a training crash. King, 24, has completed a training camp in Belgium with her team Wiggle-Honda, just three months after her accident. “I was cycling on the cobbles in the rain so it doesn’t get much worse than that,” said King, who won gold in the team pursuit at London 2012. “I am in good shape, I just need to get my confidence back.” She added: “It was scary but I am getting there. “Everyone in the team was so nice and encouraged me to get back on the road.”

King was on a regular training route in south Wales in November with a group of fellow cyclists when what she describes as “a freak accident” occurred. “Someone riding to my left hit a pothole covered in water and came into the group. I had nowhere to go and went over,” said King. “I thought I’d got off lightly. Then I felt excruciating pain as someone rode straight into my back and that’s when all the damage was done.” She was in hospital for 10 days - at one point fearing the crash might end her career - and admitted her preparations for next year’s Rio Olympics have been affected. “It has made quite a big dent because I had a plan of doing a full winter’s training,” King said.

evin Pietersen says he is going to work on a possible return to the England side. The batsman, 34, was sacked in February 2014 but was given encouragement that he might be able to return to the team in future by incoming England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves. Graves said the first step back for Pietersen would be to play county cricket. Pietersen said: “I’m going to try to work this out for sure.” Pietersen played for Surrey last season but is without a county at the moment and his current commitments could make it difficult for him to play in English cricket’s

domestic competition. The 2015 county season starts on April 12, but Pietersen is scheduled to play in the Indian Premier League, which takes place between April 8 and May 24. He also has commitments to the Caribbean Premier League, which is being held in June and July, and there is the possibility of him working in the media during the summer. ECB managing director Paul Downton appeared to end speculation over a possible Pietersen return as recently as December, saying “more bridges have been burnt” after the South African-born batsman released an inflammatory autobiography in October, critical of many key ECB figures.

rsene Wenger has his sights set on chasing down second-placed Manchester City and believes Arsenal can leapfrog the champions if they improve their consistency. The Gunners moved up to third place in the Premier League table after beating Everton 2-0 on Saturday and now lie just four points behind Manuel Pellegrini’s men after City lost to Liverpool. With 11 matches left to play this season, Wenger has not given up hope of finishing as runners-up – a feat the north Londoners have not managed since the 2004-05 season - though he admits they are “nowhere near” to winning the title. “Of course it is possible,” said Wenger when asked if the Gunners could overhaul the champions ahead of today’s showdown with QPR. “If you ask a team four points behind us if they could catch us and they would say certainly, yes.” He continued: “It’s very tight. Man City are four points ahead and there are plenty of people chasing us in the top four. It’s down to consistency. “We have seen things change quickly in the last two or three months of the season. We have to focus on finishing as well as we can.”

appearance against Leicester City last month. He was initially ruled out for up to a month, but a return to action at Loftus Road this evening would mean he will only have missed three weeks. Speaking at his press conference ahead of the QPR game, Wenger

Park Rangers, Wenger indicated that Bielik would not be involved at Loftus Road. He said: “He’ll play for the under18s. “I don’t think he will make his firstteam debut this season.” Bielik is a 6ft 2in defensive midfielder and was being touted as a possible starter at QPR if Francis Coquelin fails to recover from the broken nose he suffered against Everton at the weekend. But a debut for the Poland U-17 international does not appear to be on the cards.

GUNNERS’ HOPE DASHED OVER ICARDI’S SALE

I

nter Milan have dealt Arsenal and Chelsea’s transfer plans a hammer blow by saying they have “no intention” of selling star striker Mauro Icardi in the summer. The Argentine striker has been prolific for the underachieving Nerazzuri this season, with 14 goals in 25 league appearances. The 22-year-old was expected to be a target for many of the world’s top clubs at the end of the season. But Inter’s sporting direction Piero Ausilio has revealed that even a bid of £30m would not tempt them to sell, and he says he is committed to signing Icardi to a new contract. “What if someone bids £30m for him in the summer?” Ausilio said. “Well we’ve got no intention of doing business, we’re thinking of the present and future of this football club with Icardi. “We know we have to recognise the good work Icardi had done and that will be done. “He has made his requests and we are working towards that. What matters is that we will soon reach an agreement, I’m convinced.’’ Inter have struggled in Serie A this season. They currently sit ninth in the table, 13 points off a Champions League place and 23 points behind league leaders Juve.
