NNPC Chief Executives sign performance bond with Baru OpeOluwani Akintayo

ÏÏÏ The journey

to the transformation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) into a commercially focused and profitable business organization has been taken a notch higher with the signing of a performance bond by the Chief Operating Officers (COO) of the five Autonomous Business Units and two Directorates with the Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru. The performance bond, tagged: ‘Corporate Scorecard Key Performance Indicators (KPIs),’ constitutes the key deliverables for the Upstream, Downstream, Refineries, Gas & Power, and Ventures Autonomous Business Units and the

Finance & Accounts and Corporate Services Directorates for 2017, serving as key business objectives that each of the units would pursue and is expected to achieve. The signing of the performance bond took place at the end of a 2-day Top Management Retreat and Performance Dialogue which ended on Thursday in Abuja. Speaking on the significance of the Corporate Scorecard Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Dr. Baru said it was the corporation’s way of setting up a system for measuring performance with a view to driving every unit and every staff of the corporation towards achieving strategic business goals. According to the GMD, they

form the benchmark against which the performance of each of the Autonomous Business Units (ABUs) will be evaluated at the end of the year. “These key performance indicators will be the basis for evaluating each ABU’s performance. These KPIs are expected to be cascaded down to the individual business units by the COOs and down to individual staff by the respective Managing Directors and Executive Directors of the Strategic Business Units (SBUs). At the end of the day, we are going to add up the various inputs from individual staff, up to the SBU, to arrive at the performance of each ABU by the end of the year”, Dr Baru explained. He said subsequently, the ex-

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased, who was the claimant, was sweating profusely and coughing before he could give his evidence. He was rushed out of the court as started coughing out thick blood, only to be pronounced dead by his lawyer some minutes later. The blood was said

to have choked him as it came out in lumps, staining his shirt and the floor. The deceased, whose names could not be ascertained, died just outside the court and was rushed out of the court premises in an ambulance to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) mortuary. Our reporters gathered that he was so wet with blood that people around were scared to hold him and offer first aid. When contacted for the case file, the court clerk de-

clined to comment on the case adding that it will be to his detriment. He directed reporters to the Chief Registrar of the court. We gathered that the judge rose after the deceased lawyer informed the court that his client has just died outside the court. The strong smell of Izal disinfectant at the corridor and staircase of the court testified to the fact that the court authority had disinfected the place for health reason.

ÏÏÏ Delta governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday, received state-born Big Brother Naija winner, Efe Michael Ejeba and called on youths to remain focused in discovering their talents. According to Governor Okowa, “wherever our youths find themselves they should be focused in achieving their goals, the youths have latent talents deposited in them they must find ways to develop them and apply them, if you have a calling, you must not allow that calling to die, you (Efe) despite your calling, you listened to your parents and went to school which gave you a good foundation. “It was obvious that there was no controversy about your winning, you avoided the vices, and showed that you are focused; our youths should find a way to discover their talents, they should stay committed to their dreams and pray to God to achieve it,” the Governor said, adding, “there was no issue of sentiments or tribalism, it shows that you are truly, a Nigerian.”Governor Okowa, his Deputy, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro and members of the State Executive Council received Efe who was accompanied on the visit by his parents and members of his family. The governor who congratulated Efe on behalf of the government and people of the state, asserted: “there is no doubt that you have made us proud, a lot of Deltans are happy with the way you conducted yourself in the Big Brother Naija House.

APC not a food-is-ready party, Oyegun tells defectors Tom Okpe Abuja

ÏÏÏ The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun, has told defectors to the party that the APC is not a foodis-ready party that has set the table for people to come and eat as it used to be in the politics of the country in the past. Speaking at the party’s secretariat on Thursday when the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Oyegun received two defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Florence ita Giwa and serving Senator John Enoh to the party, Oyegun said: “This is not a food is ready party; that has become very clear. I want to assure the two of you that you won’t suffer any loss of status or recognition and you will occupy your proper place. “We welcome you to the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is an honour that has been bestowed on only very few persons. One thing made your presence significant here. Traditionally, the South-south has been the heart of the unity and

oneness of this nation, whether during the civil war or post-civil war era. “Our party does not have the presence it ought to have in the South-south. So when people of your caliber join us for the struggle, we from the South-south are particularly glad and happy. On that parochial basis, I welcome you”. The APC national chairman reiterated the difficult times and troubling times the country is in, saying “President Buhari is trying strenuously to rebuild the shattered economy, to diversify our economic potential which up till now most unfortunately rested solely and unintelligently on crude oil. “The result of the collapsed economy in addition to the collapse in the crude oil market has disrupted our economy, which has manifested in the individual deprivations of Nigerians all over the country. “In spite of the obvious difficulties that the nation is passing through, people like you voluntarily wanted to assist in this responsibility of helping in nation building”, he said. Oyegun stated that it is often misinterpreted that defectors are

running away thinking that they would have protection from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but not in the case of these two as they are not being harassed by any hand of the law. “I am not aware in your case that anybody is harassing you with the EFCC. In any case, it is obvious and played out today that we do not offer sanctuary to anybody running from the arms of the law. The evidence is all over the place. “I have been severally criticised for saying that the change we stand for is something that can be accomplished and completed in the life of our present four year tenure. It will not be completed even in eight years. “The task is enormous, challenging and worth fighting for. We stand on the threshold of history. God put this nation called Nigeria for a purpose and he does not make mistake. We have a manifest destiny”, Oyegun said. Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Senator Florence Ita Giwa told the NWC that coming to the party is like a home coming to identify with the real people.

The budget premised on an oil benchmark of $44.5 per barrel and an exchange rate of N335 to a dollar, was raised by the legislature against the initial N7.3 trillion which was earlier proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 19, 2016. Commenting on the passage of the 2017 budget which the Presidency tagged “Budget of Recovery and Growth”, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, commended the cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature which culminated to the achievement recorded in the passage of the appropriation bill. Saraki appealed to the executive to work towards ensuring that the 2018 budget is transmitted to the National Assembly by September. He commended the contributions and commitment shown by the public and the civil societies in making the 2017 budget remarkable, adding that it was the first time in the history of the country that the budget was subjected to public hearing. “The budget of the National Assembly was for the first time also made available to the public,” the Senate President stated, adding that the budget was subjected through wide consultation with stakeholders and reflected equity and allocation of adequate resources to relevant sectors.”

Saraki further expressed confidence that the executive will ensure full implementation of the budget so that Nigeria’s can feel the impact on their lives. Senator Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central) also expressed concern that the budget if fully implemented will truly address the problems before Nigeria. He posited that there are economic challenges which the country is facing, stressing that the only way out is careful planning and thorough research. Senate spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, also noted that the budget took seriously the issue of NYSC fund. He said that funds were also allocated for national planning, while deficit issues for MDAs were also captured. He expressed satisfaction with the job done by the entire Senate and the National Assembly Appropriation committees while hoping that the budget will be implemented fully as appropriated. Also, the Senior Special Adviser to the on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, expressed appreciation to the National Assembly for the passage of the budget. He also commended the Executive for their commitment and relationship with the legislature, stressing that it signals the beginning of many good things to come. Meanwhile, a look at the Budget passed by the House of Representatives shows a differential of N143 billion higher than what President Muhammadu Buhari submitted to the National Assembly. Why we’re investigating Emir Sanusi – Kano Assembly Speaker Yakubu Salisu, Kano

ÏÏÏ

The Speaker, Kano State House of Assembly, Alhassan Rirum, has explained that the investigation of the Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi II, is not connected with a similar exercise of the Executive. The Kano Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission had, last week, announced an inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of funds of the Kano Emirate Council, running to N6 billion. But according to Rirum on Thursday, the investigation by the legislators centres on the emir

and was strictly informed by a motion raised by a member representing Nassarawa state constituency, Ibrahim Gama. Gama had on Wednesday leveled eight charges against the monarch and urged the House to immediately carry out an investigation. The allegations include defamation of character, breach of oath of office/oath of allegiance, abuse of office privileges and protocol, political and religious interference, unguided utterances, misappropriation of public funds, misrepresentation at public gatherings and undue criticism of the Buhari led administration.

tension on Thursday enveloped Delta State, particularly Asaba, the state capital, following the impeachment of the State Assembly Speaker, Mr. Monday Igbuya. The impeached speaker has been slapped with three months suspension, just as the Majority Leader, Tim Ohwofere, was also suspended. Although the tension continued to hang in the air even on the face of security agents on Thursday, informed sources

Ï&ƒédƋƄ ƈƄƍ ƉƉƄ Ƅ Rƈ Ƒ ô Ɔ Ɛ ƉƐƄƊƄ Ǝ said Igbuya was removed from office over his alleged disagreement with the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, on what was described as shoddy performances in the last two years of his administration. Besides, the former speaker had also incurred the wrath of his kinsmen who described most of his actions as “barbaric and unorthodox” especially as he became the speaker of the House of Assembly with alleged defaults.

Expectedly, twenty-two members out of the twenty-nine members were said to have signed the impeachment notice after he (Igbuya) was accused of incompetence and high handedness. Insiders said the angry lawmakers convened their meetings outside the Assembly complex at about 3:00am on Thursday with heavy security beefed up around a private hotel of a member (name withheld) where the twenty-two members resolved that the

Igbuya security referred to as “Okpe rascal” must go before they moved into the Assembly Hallowed Chambers where they met and decision reached to elect Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori as the new speaker, replacing Mr. Monday Owhoviogho Igbuya. But the embattled former speaker who refused to surrender, however spoke in Urhobo language said he was vilified and removed from office on the alleged support of the governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

Dasuki: Again, Court to rule on FG’s application on witness protection ÏÏÏ

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday fixed June 15 to rule on a fresh application by the Federal Government seeking to protect witnesses in the ongoing trial of former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd). Similar application for witness protection was brought before Justice Adeniyi Ademola, who was to rule on it but following his arrest by the Department of State Service (DSS), he said he would no longer handle any matter involving the service. The trial was the transferred to Justice Ahmed Mohammed for Dasuki’s re-arraignment. At the hearing of the application, the prosecuting counsel, Oladipo Okpeseyi, informed the court the application for the witness

protection was dated June 3, 2016. According to Okpeseyi, on June 20, 2016, the application was argued before Justice Ademola but before the matter was ruled, it was taken to another court. He said the witnesses are security operatives who carry out convert operations with the defendant as their boss, urging the court to allow the witnesses give evidence behind the box. The prosecution stressed that Section 232 sub1 permits the witness to be screened or masked, adding that his application was predicated on the screening of the witnesses and not masking. “Screening the witnesses will not negate the defence the right to cross examine or the defendant

to see their faces. “I urge the court to grant this application to screen witness in the interest of justice,” Okpeseyi said. Opposing the application, counsel to Dasuki, Ahmed Raji (SAN), said the prosecution have filed similarly application and ruling delivered by Justice Ademola. He said the prosecution bringing the same motion to the same court constituted a gross abuse of court process. “What the prosecution ought to have done if it was not satisfied with the decision of Justice Ademola, was to have gone to the Court of Appeal. “The application now is predicated on the old charge which was withdrawn on April 6,” he added.

Unconfirmed sources said that Igbuya who represents Sapele constituency and a PDP chieftain had allegedly criticised the governor on his tribal sentiments and shoddy performance, a situation the governor allegedly took cognizance of, and resolved that he cannot continue as the speaker under his administration. Overtimes, Igbuya had been embattled and locked in the web of alleged incompetence; a situation his colleagues made three attempts that were aborted by the governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. Sources said plenary session was supposed to have been held at 10.00am on Thursday at Government House where the aggrieved lawmakers held a closed door meeting with the governor. Security agents were seen at every nocks and cranny, particularly within the Government House where the security agents were given list of the Assembly lawmakers that will should be allowed to come into the governor’s office. The governor’s media aides, who did not want their names in the print, dispelled the allegations against the governor as untrue, adding: “Igbuya

is not competent, and his highhanded, it is the governor who had been saving him all the three times they wanted to impeach him”. Igbuya’s media aide, Mr. Henry Ebierere, refused to pick his calls severally our reporter called him. Some Assembly workers who spoke to our reporter on the condition of anonymity described the former speaker as proactive, even though he is hot tempered, alleging that his removal was the handiwork of the governor whom they said had earlier complained that the speaker’s alleged irresponsible utterances might end his speakership. The new speaker, Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori, represents Okpe constituency and a foundation member of the PDP in Delta State. The House at the plenary session was presided over by the deputy speaker, Mr. Friday Osanebi, while the Majority Leader, Mr. Tim Owhofere, was removed and replaced by Mr. Johnson Erifo. Meanwhile, Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, has urged Igbuya not to despair about his removal, saying it is a victory for his person and the genuine democratic forces in Delta State.

Stop politizing Buhari’s health status, cleric admonishes Nigerians Titus Akhigbe, Benin

ÏÏÏ The national president of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Dr. Felix Omobude, has advised Nigerians to desist from politicizing the health status of President Mohammadu Buhari. Dr. Omobude in a press statement endorsed by his media aide, Deacon Ralph Okhiria, on Thursday in Benin City, expressed displeasure over the manner many Nigerians are making derogatory statements about the president’s health

status. The PFN leader said it was “ridiculous, embarrassing and an ungodly act for Nigerians to be making uncomplimentary remarks about the health status of the president of Nigeria. “Nigerians should recognize the fact that President Buhari is human and needs the sincere prayers of all well-meaning Nigerians to steer the ship of the nation. “Instead of playing God and making uncomplimentary remarks about the health status of the president, we should all take the issue up in prayers for

God’s intervention. “It is important that we should show some level of respect to the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, irrespective of the political party, religion or ethnic group we belong to. “Although President Buhari belongs to a particular political party, he is not the President of that party but President of the entire Nigeria as a whole. Therefore, we should all learn to wish our leaders well and not to wish them evil,” Dr. Felix Omobude added. Meanwhile, the PFN presi-

dent has commended the federal government for the recent release of 82 Chibok school girls. Dr. Omobude who described the release of the school girls as heartwarming, called on the government to further intensify efforts to free the remaining school girls still in the captivity of the Boko Haram insurgents. He also urged Nigerians, particularly Christians not to relent in their prayers aimed at releasing the remaining school girls, even as he called for support for the Nigeria armed forces towards winning the war against terrorism in the country.

He said that new initiatives were a demonstration of good faith on the part of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to the people of the Niger Delta.

Moreover, Nigerian Inter-Religious Council, Lagos Chapter (NIREC),whose contributions to the harmonious atmosphere and peaceful co-existence in the state have been quite impressive, would soon have bigger scope, more depth, wider reach

than is presently the case, for brighter performance, when the body is decentralised to the 57 local governments (LGs)/local council development areas (LCDAs), and its activities further extended to all wards in the state. The governor was of the view that through commitment to excellence, greater public involvement and support, perseverance for merit, faith in the possibility of greater Lagos as SMART city of the collective dreams of Lagosians, “which is achievable through constant prayers and supplications to Almighty God, Lagosians will continue to thrive from the prevailing peace, security and state of accelerated socio-economic and infrastructural development.”

Dr. Udeuhele said that the council equally received a report from the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECIDA), which had been on a one-week rescue mission at the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) towards attaining a total clean-up of the Enugu metropolis. The deliberation resulted in the council’s extension of the task force’s intervention at ESWAMA to one month. The council also authorised the Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue to negotiate with major ICT service providers to enable it to select the appropriate firm capable of rendering the required services that would expand the board’s capacity to deliver its mandate. According to the commissioner, the approval was sequel to the recommendations of the ministerial tender board’s report on bids to supply services to the Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue.

Patrick Okohue The event was a stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and it was called for the purpose of sensitizing members of the party on the need to ensure that nothing is left to chance in the forthcoming local government election in the state. The venue of the meeting, the state Secretariat of the party on Acme Road, Ogba, Lagos was filled to capacity. The meeting was not called to pamper any member, but for hard truth and expectations of the leadership to be fully expressed before the members and make clear that failure will not be tolerated. The Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode charged members of the party in the state to work round the clock to ensure that the party wins all available elective positions in the forthcoming July 22 Local Government elections. Governor Ambode, who addressed members of the party at the meeting which attracted thousands of party faithful and top chieftains of the party, said it was important for the party to come out tops in the elections, adding that it would go a long way to ensure that the state continues to make steady progress. While attributing his success in the 2015 gubernatorial elections to the dedication of party members and chieftains of the party, especially the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Ambode charged them to rally round the party yet again to ensure victory for the APC in the polls. “Almost exactly two years after, we have cause to thank God. I am able to look back that the confidence you give me two years ago and all of you working together to make sure I defeated the PDP candidate was no small feat. “I have come here not only to attend this meeting but to say a big thank you to all of you. I want to thank you for being the first set of people that believed in me and thereafter God has been so gracious, He has not allowed me to disappoint you. I want to say a big thank you to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the State APC Chairman and Executive members for supporting that course. “If there is any party remaining in Nigeria today, that party is manifested in all the good things coming out of Lagos State. Why are we here; we are here to count our blessings and renew the course of unity to move forward as one great party. “I want to implore all of us, whatever it is that would have transpired, it is very clear that this coming LG elections is all in your hands; just the same way we have done in the last two years, my call to all members of our great party is that all 57 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas must be won by APC without exception,” the governor said. Noting that there were challenges and issues that had emanated in the run up to the local government elections, Governor Ambode, nonetheless urged members to stand by the decisions of the party leaders, which according to him would bring about the best for all. “This is our first gathering this year, it is very significant, it is instructive and we are meeting on a very happy note. We have begun a new journey into the crusade to make Nige-

ria a progressive nation and it is starting from this process that we would use; our Chairmen, Councilors, SLGS and this is the new chart that we want to follow in this state. “A whole lot of things have happened; it is left in the hands of Asiwaju to proclaim the way forward for all of us. So, whatever direction Asiwaju say we should go, we would go,” he said. On his part, APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended members of the party for supporting Governor Ambode in the 2015 elections, and urged that the candidates of the party for the forthcoming Local Government Election should also be supported. Tinubu, who described the election as the

Gov. Ambode

most challenging, recalled how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former President Goodluck Jonathan moved to take over the state by all means including spending huge cash, but the APC members resolutely stood their ground and ensured the victory of the party. While urging members to accept the decision of the party with respect to the LG election, Tinubu said as agreed earlier, the 18 chairmen who were promised automatic ticket for their efforts in the party and the state would be allowed to return, while the Sole Administrators who took over from Executive Secretaries (ES) of the LGs and LCDAs would not be allowed to contest in the election.

He also directed party leaders in all the 57 councils to give special concession to youths and women, while also urging members of the party in Surulere to give peace a chance and drop all forms of public disorder. Responding to issues raised by party members that the ES should be disallowed from contesting, Tinubu said: “Doing such would amount to denying them their rights having left office more than a year ago. It is just like saying that Governor Ambode or Senators and other party leaders should not be allowed second term.” Besides, Tinubu commended Governor Ambode for his sterling performance so far, saying that the governor had not let the party down. “Governor Ambode you have not let us down. He is doing a fantastic job, in an environment where there is economic recession is a big challenge, they say he might not be able to do it, but he is doing it and doing it perfectly. “He has a very good team of performers, it takes a leader to lead a team to victory and a leader to think and dream. He thinks and performs and he is doing a great job, we are very proud of him,” Tinubu said.

Politics 10 Forgery: Protesters storm INEC Hgtrs, demands prosecution of Sen. Uba Tom Okpe, Abuja Protesters in their hundreds Wednesday stormed the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding that Senator Emmanuel Andy Uba be prosecuted for alleged forgery involving his West African School certificate (WAEC). Recall that another group had earlier petitioned the Inspector General of Police and the Senate President over the same request. The group, under the platform of Coalition of Nigerian Youths for Good Governance (CNYGG), however, submitted another petition addressed to the INEC chairman, asking the commission to immediately withdraw the certificate of return issued to the Anambra Senator. The protesters were seen carrying various placards with inscriptions, “Andy Uba must go, prosecute Andy Uba for forgery, INEC should withdraw Uba’s certificate of return,” among others. The petition read by the leader of the group, Lady Peace N Dimoji said: “we immediately call for an urgent intervention of your office into this criminal act, not only to save the integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria but also to nip in the bud, the new breeding version of falsification and deceit amongst politicians representing their electorate before it grows into a full circle and organised dubious practice and precedent for the younger generation. “It is based on this that we bring to your attention, a case of deceit and falsification of results perpetrated on your esteemed commission by Mr. Emmanuel Nnamdi Uba, Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial zone in the National Assembly, with an aim to mislead the electorate. “The above allegations were disclosed by a private investigator, which correspondence we hereby attach as evidence, specifically one reply by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) dated 12/02/2014 by O.M Adebayo ESQ, deputy registrar examination department confirming that the qualification (result) presented to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the mentioned Senator was never issued by WAEC and that even the signature thereon was absolutely falsified.” While counting on the INEC boss to act on the matter, the group also believes that the electoral empire will recommend to the Inspector General of Police

Future elections will be better than that of 2015 –INEC The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the commission was committed to making future elections in the country better than the 2015 exercise. Yakubu made the pledge when he received the new United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stuart Symington at INEC headquarters on Wednesday in Abuja. He expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for its commendation of the 2015 polls. According to him, “you have noted that the elections were well organised and were of international standard and accepted, contrary to situation in the past where there were protests on the street after elections. “After the 2015 elections, there were jubilations on the streets and this further underscored the achievement of the commission and the steps that Nigeria has taken towards consolidating its democracy. “We appreciate your kind words; 2015 was a defining moment for Nigeria elections, but we want to assure you that the commission is conscious of its responsibility and we are committed to making future elections even better. “It is for that reason we are taking some steps in ensuring that the 2019 general elections are better than 2015 general elections,’’ Yakubu said. He said that one of the steps being taken was proper planning. “We have been planning ahead for 2019 general elections and beyond, and we have done so in many other areas in two ways.’’ He disclosed that the commission would, from next week, commence the process of

Prof. Yakubu implementing its “2017-2021 Strategic Plan.” The chairman said that the commission would also clean up voter register, conclude ongoing continuous voter registration in 774 local governments before the 2019 general elections, and continue the exercise later. He also listed the fixing of specific dates ahead of the 2019 general elections as well as deepening the use of technology as other steps being taken to improve on the country’s electoral system.

Yakubu pledged that the commission would continue to work more closely with the US embassy to strengthen the country’s democracy and electoral process. “There is a lot we share in common with the US in terms of our democratic evolution. America practices presidential system, Nigeria also practices the presidential system. “Many people don’t also realise that the Nigeria presidential democracy is second only to the US in terms of the size of registered voters. “As I speak today, Nigeria has 70 million registered voters, and US is the only country that practices presidential democracy that has more registered voters than Nigeria,’’ he added. Earlier, Symington had said that his visit to INEC was to learn how Nigeria conducted its elections, and commended the commission for the success of 2015 general elections. He said that conducting widely accepted elections had helped Nigeria to play a leading role expected of it in Africa. Symington said that majority views across the globe on the 2015 general elections was that the elections were conducted in the atmosphere of peace imposed by wind of hope and shaped by the certainty of comfort. “So, the combination of peace, hope and comfort seems to me a sort of key that is needed, going forward,” he said. He, however, listed good relationship and confidence between the leaders and the followers as some of the key factors required

C/River postpones LGA elections scheduled for June 17 Edem Edem, Calabar

The Cross River State government has finally postponed local governments elections in the state slated for June 17, 2017. The electoral body, the State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) put the reason for the postponement to subsisting court order by the state High Court, Calabar restraining the commission from continuing the process in view of the on-going INEC continuous voter’s registration exercise which commences on April 21-July 25, 2017. The commission had earlier put forward amongst others reasons for not conducting the elections on lack of resources, and internal party wrangling. The three major parties, People Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressive Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) have not been able to set the ball rolling. There are confusions in virtually all the parties as they have not

been able to conduct primary or produce candidates for the elections. Cross River State governor, Prof Ben Ayade, it was gathered was not keen on conducting the elections as he was comfortable with the present head of administration. Late Justice Okoi Ikpi Itam had thrown out a suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop the governor from appointing caretaker committees. Justice Itam had ruled that the present leadership of the 18 local government areas headed by the Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) were already acting in that capacity. The CROSIEC Chairman, Mike Ushie had issued a statement saying that the suspension of the local government elections was pertinent not only because of the court order but concerns raised during the commission’s stakeholders meeting across the state on the fate of those who attained the voting age and are awaiting registration.

He stated that as a law abiding and listening commission, there is need to accommodate all eligible voters for participatory, free, fair, transparent and credible local government election in the state. While regretting inconveniencies caused by the suspension, the commission said it does not in any way invalidate the electoral process. The commission therefore said a review time table which will commence with the submission of list of candidates and personal particulars of candidates to the date of election will be made available on completion of the exercise or resolution of legal issues associated with the order. Before now, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had cancelled the sale of intent and nomination forms with a prospective contestant complaining that; after turning us around, making us spend money for consultation and other things, we were told the governor has ordered a stop to the selling of intent and nomination forms that elections will not hold at the date announced.

Tinubu commends Lagos Speaker, Obasa, says he’s doing a fantastic job The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinunu has praised the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa for doing an exemplary job in holding the House together. Asiwaju Tinubu gave this commendation on Wednesday at the Stakeholders’ Meeting of the Lagos APC which took place at the party secretariat at ACME road, Ikeja. The APC National Leader who addressed party faithful at the on the coming local government elections in the state specially

praised the Lagos Assembly Speaker for his maturity and purposeful leadership which he said engendered the defection of six lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Asiwaju Tinubu commended Obasa for ensuring peace and tranquility in the House which has engendered smooth relationship with the Executive arm of government which has led to the massive development and growth of the state. “Our Speaker, Obasa is doing a fantastic job. He’s performing really well. He’s doing well and his performance has been fantas-

Why we are promoting bill to make teaching of Yoruba compulsory, by Obasa The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has explained that the need to preserve Yoruba language and culture from going into extinction was the main reason the House is promoting the Bill to make the teaching and learning compulsory of the language in all schools in the state. Rt. Hon. Obasa made this disclosure at the Assembly complex in Ikeja at a public hearing organised by the Assembly’s Education Committee to create awareness on the Bill. The Speaker lamented a situation whereby children these days are being prevented from speaking Yoruba Language not only in their schools but also even at home by their parents. “All over the world, mother tongue is the language of instruction and learning in schools and I continue to wonder why our own should be different. It is here that we prevent our children from speaking Yoruba Language calling it

vernacular,” Rt. Hon. Obasa said. He stated that the inability to teach and encourage children to make use of the language is fast eroding the culture and tradition of the Yoruba people. “It is ironical that while we were discouraging the use of our language, foreigners knowing the importance of the rich Yoruba culture and tradition anchored on the language, have been coming here to learn and make use of the language,” he said. Obasa told the audience at the gathering that the success of the House initiative requires the cooperation and support of all, particularly stakeholders in the education sector, hence the need to organise the public hearing aimed at creating awareness on the Bill and seeking recommendations and support of all for the success of the Bill. Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon Lanre Ogunyemi, decried the situation whereby Yoruba values are being eroded in most homes and schools, “where chil-

dren and students have been deprived the right to communicate in their language due to highhandedness of some teachers and parents who perceive Yoruba Language as vernacular. “The Lagos State House of Assembly at its plenary session of Thursday, 18th June, 2015 passed a resolution that the Yoruba Language shall be a compulsory subject in all public and private schools in Lagos State. “The need for compulsory teaching of Yoruba Language in all schools in the state was further reiterated at the House plenary session of Thursday, 4th February, 2016.” Hon Ogunyemi stated that mother tongue is the language of instruction and learning in other countries of the world. “Ours must not be different because the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education believes that as a state, we must lead by example by adequately and effectively embarking on the campaign that this rich language must

Stop politicising Health status of Buhari, says PFN

Titus Akhigbe,Benin

National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. (Dr.) Felix Omobude, has advised Nigerians to desist from politicising the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari. Dr. Omobude stated this in a press statement endorsed by his Media Aide, Deacon Ralph Okhiria, in Benin City, and expressed displeasure over the manner many Nigerians are making mockery statements about Mr. President’s health status. He said: “It is ridiculous, embarrassing and an ungodly act for Nigerians to be uncomplimentary remarks about the health status of the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari. “Nigerians should recognise the fact that President Buhari is human and needs the sincere prayers of all wellmeaning Nigeria to steer the ship of the nation afloat. “Instead of playing God and making uncomplimentary remarks about the

Dr. Omobude health status of the President, we should all take the issue up in prayers for God’s intervention. “It is important that we should show some level of respect to the office of President of the Federal Republic of Ni-

geria, irrespective of the political party, religion or ethnic group we belong to. “Although President Buhari belongs to a particular political party, he is not the President of that party but President of the entire Nigeria as a whole. Therefore, we should all learn to wish our leaders well and not to wish them evil”. Meanwhile, the National President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Dr. Felix Omobude, has commended the Federal Government for the recent release of 82 Chibok school girls. Dr. Omobude, who described the release of the school girls as heartwarming, called on the government to further intensify efforts to free the remaining Chibok school girls still in the captivity of Boko Haram insurgents. The PFN leader also urged Nigerians, particularly Christians not to relent in their prayers aimed at releasing the remaining school girls, even as he called for support for the Nigerian Armed Forces towards winning the war against terrorism in the country.

PDP chieftain urges INEC to decentralise CVR centres The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Abia State, Chief Johnson Onuigbo, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to decentralise the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration to wards and communities. Onuigbo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia, the state capital. He said that the measure would help the commission to capture population of eligible persons in the hinterland, adding that the registration points should be extended to the rural areas for the exercise to be successful. “The villages and communities are far from the local government headquarters where the registration takes place.

“This is why I advocate that the centres should be decentralised to wards and communities, to make them accessible to all those that are eligible to register.” The PDP chieftain advised all those who had yet to obtain their voter card to take advantage of the opportunity to register. “I want people to know that the voter card is the power they have to vote and elect a candidate of their choice in future elections in the state. “Any person who failed to register and obtain his voter card has disenfranchised himself and should have himself to blame,” Onuigbo said. Meanwhile, Mr. Chuka Achumie, the Electoral Officer in charge of Umuahia

North Local Government Area, has described the turnout of people for registration as impressive. Achumie expressed the hope that the commission might consider using the Registration Area Centres to be able to mop up other eligible people who could not come to Umuahia to register. He said that the centre was registering an average of between 80 and 100 persons daily. He noted that incessant power outage at the centre was the only major challenge. “We spend a minimum of N2,500 to run the generator daily since the exercise commenced due erratic power supply,” Achumie said.

11 Politics Buhari’s quick recovery, not 2019 should be more important to Nigerians – Olulade

Hon. Olulade A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Epe Constituency II, Hon. Segun Olulade has said that those raising issues over President Muhammadu Buhari’s health are doing so because they do not wish him well and calculating towards 2019 political scheming. Olulade in a statement issued on Thursday, explained that Nigerians need to mind things that are more important to the nation than dissipating too much energy over the health of the President which has been described as “not as bad as being portrayed.” The lawmaker, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Health Services, noted that while it is normal to get worried over the health of the President, “our attitude towards the subject goes a long way to define our patriotism to our country. “Everyone should be genuinely concerned about Buhari’s health and part of our patriotic duties as citizens is to pray more for his recovery and talk less in the negative about our President’s health condition,” the statement read in part. Speaking further, the lawmaker maintained that in as much as Buhari still fulfils constitutional provisions around functionality of his office, the nation should not panic, adding that “each time the President goes for medical purpose, we have a very competent vice acting in President’s capacity and as a result, we should bother more on economic progress and unity of our country so we can step-up developments. “Let’s bother more on performance of our Ministers; let’s be concerned more about how many viable bills are passed at the National Assembly in the interest of growth and development. “The passage of 2017 budget, which is still hanging should bother us more as citizens whose lives are affected positively or negatively by these performances, and not debates over Buhari’s health.

Supreme Court verdict: Tension mounts in Abia over gov’ship Sunday Nwakanma, Umuahia

ÏÏÏ It has been anxiety, tension

and apprehension as Abians look forward to the Supreme Court judgment on the case between the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, and another Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant, Dr. Uche Oga, today (Friday) in Abuja. Towards obtaining the desired victory, faithful to both parties in the matter have resorted to fervent prayers to God, asking Him to allow the victory on their side. In Umuahia, most government ministries as well as offices of concerned friends and relations were closed as workers went to one place or the other to pray for victory and for defeat of their opponent. Earlier, numerous socio-cultural organisations have perfected plans and have been sending large number of members to Abuja “to paint the place red”, while many government functionaries travelled to Abuja on Thursday to be part of the event. Many Christian organisations also joined in the prayer sessions, including a powerful one held at the Catholic Mater Dei Cathedral

led by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Abia State branch. Investigations revealed that some lilly-livered government functionaries have secretly organised their tables should the unexpected happen and have even refused to go to Abuja. According to a source, some political appointees have packed their documents and have been taking them home. Talking about the prayer sessions, another source asked the need for the prayer just few days to the judgment day. “What do they want God to do? To re-write the judgment within one day or what?” the source asked. Meanwhile, the state government has announced that it has it on good authority that some people had concluded plans to do demonstration today (Friday), invariably over unfavorable judgment, stating that security agencies have been instructed to “deal decisively” with such protesters. The judgment today (Friday) has been the subject of discussion wherever you see people gathering, and has even provided betting game for idle youths that staked up to N10, 000.00 for a win.

Nigeria requires additional 155,000 police personnel –IGP Continued from page 1 til 2016 when the recruitment of 10,000 applicants was approved by the Federal Government. He said this development had left a huge gap in the manpower need of the force due to retirements, deaths and resignations. The police boss said the proposal had been forwarded to the Federal Government for consideration. He added that inadequate funding, shortfall in power and training and retraining of personnel had been some of the challenges confronting the force. “Over the years, the Nigeria Police Force saddled with the re-

sponsibility of policing the country, has been grappling with fundamental challenges which tend to impede its performance,” he said. The IGP said the issue of funding of police had been critical to all past police panels, adding that it had yet to be critically addressed. He said the Nigeria Police Force Reform Trust Fund bill before the National Assembly since 2008 had yet to be passed. Idris called on members of the National Assembly to expeditiously pass the bill to address the challenge of funding for the police. “We solicit the support and

understanding of the National Assembly to give an accelerated hearing to this bill to adequately position the police for better funding and performance,” he said. He said the bill would further provide a legal framework that would outline the counterpart funding arrangement between the three tiers of government. Idris noted that when passed, the police would be funded through a first line charge on the federation account quarterly. He said that in spite of paucity of fund, the force in collaboration with other security agencies had been able to stabilse the polity.

Buhari treats me like one of his sons -Osinbajo Continued from page 1 and his humble self as he treats him like his son. He said: “In fact, the president has taken me as a son in the way he treats me. I feel very much at home in Katsina. More so because this is the state of the president who has taken me as a brother. “The amount of responsibilities President Buhari has given me shows he seriously believes we can live together as brothers. “I pray the Lord will preserve our president to continue to lead as the nation has voted him to do.

He seriously believes in Nigerian unity,” he added. Osinbajo was further quoted to have restated the Federal Government’s commitment to the ease of doing business in the country. He disclosed that even on Thursday, the Corporate Affairs Commission succeeded in registering three companies within two hours. This, he said, was an evidence of government’s commitment. Akande also quoted the Emir as saying, while welcoming Osinbajo, that unity among people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds was necessary.

Editorial Checking incidence of cultism in tertiary institutions

A

ll evidence in the country today portends a rising culture of barbarism and bloodletting among the student population of Nigeria’s institutions of higher learning. No day passes without the sad news of university or polytechnic students murdering their fellow peers in show of battle for supremacy. Definitely, the frequency of such coldblooded atrocities is not only alarming; it is approaching an epidemic level. It is ,therefore, imperative that the authorities act with dispatch to arrest this embarrassing anomaly. Rather than devout time to academic learning and scholarship, most students have become engrossed in grisly cult rituals on campuses, which have turned these citadels of higher learning into killing fields. There is hardly any academic semester without cult clashes and related activities, often leading to the death of students and at times lecturers. Cultism has continued to be a very embarrassing problem facing Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. Various deadly factions have mushroomed in our campuses, all with their gory rituals and mind-bending initiation rites. As at last count, there are more than 90 different cult groups on campuses, with each perpetrating nefarious acts to cause mayhem among students and lecturers. Unfortunately, academic calendars of our tertiary institutions are constantly disrupted due to cult clashes. A key feature of these confraternities is the fact that they keep their activities secret and they have different forms of attires and symbols or signs which they use in self-branding.

Publisher/Editor in Chief

In addition, cultists carry out their activities at the dead of the night but in recent times, they have become barefaced. These groups try to recruit fellow students into their ranks and those who refuse are always brutally assaulted. Many reasons have been adduced for the increasing rise of cult groups on our campuses. Social commentators posit that it is the microcosm of the Nigerian society, where societal values and norms have since gone to the dogs. They believe that our values are not only confused but also intrinsically defective and counterproductive. Despite all efforts to tackle the menace, secret cults in our institutions of higher learning have defied solutions. Unfortunately, because of their cruel dispositions, the general academic performances of most students have fallen below average signaling a bleak future for the country. It is, therefore, time Nigerians of all persuasions stand up against this monster and menace. We cannot speak of building a justice system that punishes felons when the justices are felons. We cannot reform the university system when the future provosts and vice chancellors are cultists who threatened their professors for good class scores. It is impossible to raise children who respect the law when the dominant parent is a perpetual outlaw. Security should be stepped up within and around our tertiary institutions to checkmate the carrying of arms and illegal weapons into the campuses. The havoc of cultism in our campuses is enormous and if not properly checked, it would transform into a monstrous ‘Gorgon’ and in no distant time make the campuses not conducive to academic learning.

Alleged N1.5bn scam: Appeal Court overturns ex-NIMASA D-G Omatseye’s conviction Peter Fowoyo

ÏÏÏ One year after he was con-

victed over alleged contract splitting, respite, on Thursday, came the way of a former Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Director-General, Temisan Raymond Omatseye, as the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, overturned the fiveyear conviction. Of all the 24 counts upon which he was convicted at the lower court, the appellate court discharged and acquitted Omatseye.

The appellate court set aside the May 20, 2016 judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos which convicted Omatseye on a charge bordering on bid rigging and contract splitting. Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia had found Omatseye culpable in a N1.5 billion contract scam. She ruled that he awarded contracts above the stipulated N2.5million threshold, and accordingly, convicted him in 24 out of the 27 counts but discharged and acquitted him on three others. But the appellate court held yesterday, among others, that the trial court did not properly

evaluate the evidence. Justice Yargata Nimpar, resolved all five grounds of appeal in the appellant’s favour. Other members of the threeman panel were Justice Adejumo Obaseki and Abraham Georgewill. The appellate court considered four issues for determination, including whether under Section 16(1)(A) of the Public Procurement Act 2007, approval for spending over the threshold constitute an offence. Justice Yargata Nimpar, who read the judgment, considered whether the trial court properly evaluated the evidence. “I

found that it did not,” said Justice Nimpar. “The long and short of it is that, the appeal succeeds. The prosecution should not ride roughshod over the Constitution. “The judiciary will do the war on corruption more harm by declaring someone a criminal, where no offence has been committed. “I find merit in the appeal. The conviction is hereby set aside and the appellant is hereby discharged and acquitted”, Justice Nimpar concluded. The former NIMASA boss in the appeal by his lawyer, Edoka

Onyeke, argued, among others, that he was persecuted and not prosecuted. He said although contract splitting existed in law, approval above threshold did not. Omatseye accused Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia of jettisoning an exonerating January 23, 2013 letter from the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, which it admitted as evidence in court. According to him, the letter stated that the 27-count charge brought under sections of the procurement Act that deals with administrative breaches rather than real offences.

Nosa Akenzua, Asaba

ÏÏÏ The Ovie of UmiaghwaAbraka kingdom in Delta state, HRM Lucky Ochuko Ararile, has described the continued killing of his people by Fulani herdsmen as failure on governance on the part of the federal government, saying that the situation currently portends nightmare for his people. The monarch who spoke to

journalists on Thursday, criticized the federal government for keeping silence on the killings especially in the South South, orchestrated by Fulani herdsmen, wondering why the government that is supposed to protect the lives of the people and their properties, would remain indifferent despite the havoc wreaked on Nigerians. He said that there was no reason why the Fulani herdsmen would trespass on the people’s

land and their farm, describing it as taboo and abnormal. “We are in the Nigeria of the 21st century and as such, I see no reason why such barbaric actions should be allowed, my people are under siege of Fulani herdsmen killings, it is sad,”he lamented. The monarch noted with sadness how herdsmen have killed many people in the country and in Delta state in particular, saying that it has become mere statistics to them as they no longer have regard for human lives,

and called on the government to break its silence on the issue. Meanwhile, the Academic State Union of Universities (ASUU) Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, has declared war against the rampaging herdsmen in the areas. Staff of the Ogun state owned radio station; Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, (OGBC), on Wednesday locked up their offices as they began an indefinite strike to press home their agitation for payment of their fourmonth salaries and other entitlement owed by the management of the station. The industrial action began after the expiration of three separate notices which the radio workers’ unions had given the management on non-payment of their entitlements put at about N148,260,000 The workers led by their leaders, Abiodun Ogundipe (Chairman, OGBC Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ), and Ayo Aina (Chairman, Radio Television and Theater Arts Workers Union, RATTAWU) had issued 21,7 and 3 days warning to the management to pay their dues. It was learnt that the workers stormed the premises of the radio station located at Ibara Housing Estate in Abeokuta at about 4.30 a.m. armed with chain and padlock with which they locked up the door leading to the studio and other offices. As at the time of filing this report, the General Manager and other management staff of the station could not access their offices. Redefine journalism practice, don tasks media practitioners Esther Taiwo

ÏÏÏ A former professor of

Political Communication in the Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof Ayo Olukotun, has called on media practitioners to redefine the practice of journalism by ensuring that journalists become owners of media. He said this in his lecture titled ‘Governance and the Media in an Emergent Democracy: A Study of the Role, Record and Changing Profile of the Nigerian Media 199-2017,’ being a maiden an inaugural lecture for Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance, in the Department of Political Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University, delivered at

the Adeola Odutola Hall, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state on Wednesday. According to the don, notwithstanding its limitations, the Nigerian media has creditably discharged its responsibility although it obviously need to do even more in the years ahead considering that there is no enough pleasure in the land. He posited that “looking ahead, the media will have to maintain, even enlarge the crusading and reformist outlooks with which they have been historically associated. To do this, they must increase efforts to rid their ranks of corruption, as well as ensure that employers of media pay their workers, as and at when due. “Journalists should not

be content with merely reflecting society, but must rise above the corrupt polity by demonstrating that they take the values they canvass seriously,” the retired don said. Prof Olukotun suggested that the media would still be stronger and become better instruments of national integration if the organisations that cater to a national audience make conscious efforts to carry along perspectives that are based in regions other than the ones in which they are located. “Of course, there is nothing wrong with regional newspapers or even community ones, but those must be so defined and should avoid being so provincial than they are of little national value,”

he said. In his goodwill message, Founder/Senior Pastor of Trinity House,Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, spoke on the importance of giving, stated that it promotes, protects and makes God to favour man stressing that giving makes the world a better place a well as immortalising people. The Oba (Dr) Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair of Governance, Department of Political Science, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, according to the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Mr Olatunji Ayanlaja (SAN), was approved by the University, last year and has generated about N150 million which has been invested in an enterprise that can never fail.

Science will on Thursday (today) induct the Deputy ViceChancellor, Academics and Research of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe. Ogundipe and eight other professors are to be conferred as fellows at the academy’s public lecture and induction of fellows programme themed ‘Cancer: keeping the monster at bay’ in Abuja. Other professors to be conferred as fellows of the academy are Effiom Anita, Joseph Balogun, Charles Esimone, Kamiyus Gamaniel, Folasade Ogunsola, Emiola OlapadeOlaopa, Martins Olorunfemi, and Mufutau Oyeneyin. Ogundipe is a Professor of Botany in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos. He has a Ph.D. Botany (Ife) and MBA (Unilag). Professor Ogundipe has attended training in the University of Johannesburg, South Africa; University of Reading, U.K., Harvard University, U.S.A. and Kumming Institute of Botany, China. His area of research includes Molecular Plant Taxonomy/ Biosystematics, Cytogenetics, Ethnobotany, Paleobotany and Ecological conservation. His publications show that he has been engaged in the recording of the general anatomy of plant species and assembling anatomical features, which may be used along with other features for enhancing taxonomic knowledge of the plant and establishing an identification system for some of these plant species. He has also been involved in exploration and testing of herbal drugs for their medicinal and antimicrobial properties.

LAGOS @ 50: The secret behind the success story Lookman Seriki, of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Lagos, in this discourse, captures the economic, cultural and multifaceted dynamics that make Lagos tick The Allure of Lagos in its power is awesome… and seductively magnetic! Eko, the nostalgic name of the emerging mega city is fondly called, is the place where it is safe to dream, if you are determined to make it real. In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in their dreams.” The Economic Capital of Nigeria – Lagos, has variously been described, as a “Land of Promise”, “Home for All”, “Land of Commerce”, “Land of Performance”, “Land of Aquatic Splendor and Tourism”, “Centre of Learning”. Some even call it, “Land of peace, of Hope, of Opportunity, of Business, of Legacies, of Freedom,” etc. A mere 0.4% of Nigeria’s territorial land mass, Lagos harbors more than 21 million, or 18% Nigerians of different ethnic, religious and cultural groups and hosts over 62% of industrial and commercial interests. Her Internally Generated Revenue of N287 billion in December 2016, - about 76% of its total revenue - was more than that of 20 states of the Nation’s 36 States put together! The promise of Lagos is alive and well! With over 54% of the country’s manufacturing employment, Lagos is the 2nd largest economy in Nigeria, 3rd in Sub-Saharan Africa and about 7 or 8 in Africa. It is the 7th fastest growing economy in the World, and even when it is already growing in leaps and bound, Lagos will surely experience a real exponential growth, and you may want to know why: With the recent discovery of petroleum in the State, Lagos is poised for special federal revenue allocation that other oil producing states enjoy; what will be the largest refinery in Africa, or probably in the World, is projected for completion soon, Lekki Free Trade Zone, massive infrastructural rehabilitation and construction and integrated

mass transportation system is going on at frenetic pace; and with dynamic, dedicated and visionary leadership, Lagos continues to promote and project best practices and reforms to ease administration, business and financial operations. The fact that IGR has increased so dramatically to N436 billion in 2017, is a pointer to the fact that a sound, sustainable revenue mobilisation measures have firmly taken root. On viability of Lagos, the Governor of the State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said, “... is a land of opportunities, offering all residents the chance

to succeed in their vocations and endeavours…a place where you have a chance to make it if you work hard...Lagos provides the cohesion that keeps Nigeria together.” Acclaimed Africa’s New York City, there is a popular maxim among Lagosians that “if you come to Lagos and you are not smart (not able to make headway), you cannot survive anywhere else on the planet, not even in America!” How true may be debatable, perhaps, but the key word, is “hard work” and of course PRAYER. Thus, the dream of most Nigerians is to experience Lagos first, even if they have to trav-

el abroad in quest for greener pasture. In fact, virtually all Nigerians who have made it to the top in all areas of life have done so, directly or indirectly, with Lagos connections. Lagos as a land of hope and of opportunity, or where else, under the sun, could one be hawking bread in the street in one moment, a nondescript and, the next, a celebrity - the Ajoke Agege bread seller story! “Lagos is a Home for All”, means Nigeria will not break because Lagos is the adhesive holding Nigerians together. Certain significant occurrences testify to this assertion. Have we ever pondered

why, all civilian governors since the First Republic - Lateef Jakande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Raji Fashola and Akin Ambode - except the short three months period of Micheal Otedola in 1983 - have always been progressive, visionary, role models, achievers by far margin among their peers? This is acclaimed even by their adversaries. Have you examined why virtually all these governors went on to assume greater national responsibilities and influence after their respective tenure? Have we explored the reasons why Lagos was never conquered by the ruling political party in 1983 and 2003? Recall, the malevolent “Landslide” (or was it Moonslide) Election of National Party of Nigeria. At the tail end of the Second Republic, Governors Lateef Jakande of Lagos, and Governor Olabisi Onabanjo of Ogun States survived “annexation” of the Unity Party States unscratched. (Of course Chief Obafemi Awolowo was from Ogun State); while Pa Micheal Adekunle Ajasin of Ondo State had to bitterly fight it to the Supreme Court, to reclaim his mandate from Akin Omoboriowo, of the ruling party, after much bloodlettings that culminated into December 1983 coup of General Muhammedu Buhari and Col. Tunde Idiagbon. Fast-track to 2003, when the evil tsunami of 2003 Election, swallowed all progressive States, but was unable to consume Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Lagos, which remained the bulwark and rallying point for the Progressives till date. True, Jakande put Lagos in the sun, but it was Asiwaju Tinubu that really repaired

Mainland Lagos

Vision of Eko Atlantic City

True, Jakande put Lagos in the sun, but it was Asiwaju Tinubu that really repaired and strengthened the foundation. Governor Fashola constructed solid structure on it, while Governor Ambode propelled construction to astronomical height. and strengthened the foundation, deeply eroded since 1983. Governor Fashola constructed solid structure on it, while Governor Ambode propelled construction to astronomical height. IGR was N300 million in 1999; it is N436 billion in 2017 with the year not even half way through! When Southern and Northern Protectorates were amalgamated as Nigeria in 1914, Lagos was chosen over Calabar as Federal Capital. Was it by prayer, predestination, pure chance or divine intervention? Lagos is a centre of Unity and Freedom; maybe the reason that state remains the only one with its boundary intact since 1967. Have we pondered why Lagos have the full mix of variables that cause sustainable development, successions of visionary democratic leaders who continue to transmit models for good governance, proactive civil service, dynamic and egalitarian population, appropriate climatic and environmental condition and peace and harmonious coexistence of diverse groups and interests?! Some would say FAITH, some would say DESTINY. But virtually all would agree that prayer and perseverance for excellence by Lagosians - leaders and the led - is KEY for Lagos Successes. The reason for the establishment of Home Affairs Ministry is primarily to take care of the spiritual yearning of Lagosians, reinforce our faith in the destiny of Lagos, promote this state of concord, care and love, inspire us to work harder without fear and secure our sustainable growth.

Ambode’s wife tasks women on entrepreneurship Benjamin Omoike

ÎÎÎ

Women and young ladies have been urged to be resolute and unrelenting in their pursuit of chosen careers or enterprise. This was the advice of the wife of the Lagos state governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, when she addressed women and young ladies at a career talk programme, organized as part of activities for the quarterly meeting of the Southern Governors Wives’ Forum (SGWF), held at Hubert Ogunde Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun state. Mrs. Ambode noted that the world would not give women the same opportunity as men, to prove their capabilities in any human activity, job, career or business, hence the need for determination. Bolanle disclosed that, male domination of nearly all human activities was real, adding that any woman who wished to succeed or leave her footprints in the sands of time, must break the glass ceiling for her dream to see the light of day. Speaking further, she said as far as the world was concerned, major activities with the most

impact on human society, were exclusively for men, contending that women must fight for social space, recognition and even for deserved acclaim. According to her, “As far as the world is concerned, major activities with the most impact on the human society, are exclusively for men. This is why the woman must always fight for social space, for recognition and even for deserved acclaim. “Over the years and

across countries, women have shown excellence, demonstrating brilliance, bravery, intelligence and expertise in the most complex fields of human endeavour, yet the world is not fully convinced that what men can do, women can do even better,” she argued. Bolanle cited herself as an example of a woman who faced the same stereotype in a male-dominated enterprise, when she started her bakery business 10years ago. Mrs. Ambode disclosed

that despite discouraging comments, she pressed on, taking all emerging challenges as the teething problem that a young business must go through before stabilizing. According to her, rather than allow the negative comments to weaken her, they strengthened and emboldened her, giving her the energy to climb further. The governor’s wife, gave success tips to include: determination to succeed; following

the passion; obeying the heart and taking the leap; making the voice heard; building a support base around like-minded optimistic women; tapping from mentors, and not being afraid to start small. Speaking earlier during a courtesy call to his office by the governors’ wives, the governor of Ogun state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun commended the women for coming together despite different political and religious affiliations.

He thanked them for regarding the governors as partners and not competitors, promising that their reports would be used as guide in policy formulation. Chairperson of SGWF, Mrs. Nkechi Okoroacha, wife of the governor of lmo state, disclosed that the forum was the brain child of the wife of the president, Hajiya Aisha Buhari; geared toward building the bridge of love, friendship and cordial relationship among the federating states.

Okerafor Athanatius,

lawmakers followed a Motion of Public Urgent Importance, jointly sponsored by the Legislators representing the affected areas in the State Assembly (Habila Timothy Anderifun of Ussa Constituency, Mark Useni Bako of Takum II and Hosea Ibi of Takum I.) Speaking during Plenary, held at the Hallow Chambers of the Assembly Complex, Jalingo, Hon. Habila Timothy Anderifun of Ussa Constituency, who described the crisis as unfortunate stressed the need for the state government to beef up security in the

areas to avert future occurrences. He condemned the actions of the suspected Fulani herdsmen who he disclosed, attacked and slaughtered a boy who was peacefully taking his bath in a river in a village in Takum local government adding that the herdsmen also attacked and killed some youths in some parts of Ussa local government area of the state. According to him, the Fulani herdsmen go about in military uniforms destroying not only lives but houses and other properties belonging to their victims,

who are farmers. The lawmaker further noted that the Peace Agenda of Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku for the people of the state has been bastardized by the incessant attacks of the herdsmen saying proactive measures must be taken against the plans of these herdsmen of causing unrest to the people of Southern Taraba and the state in general. Habila Timothy Anderifun, also, prayed for the strengthening of Traditional Institutions in the affected areas with a view to holding them responsible in

events of any breach of peace. Our Correspondent reports that the lawmakers who commended the sponsors of the Motion, unanimously adopted all the prayers calling for the members to set up an Ad-hoc Committee who will investigate the immediate and remote causes of the crisis, ascertain the extent of damage done and to curb further occurrences. They also called on the government to increase security personnel across the state to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

Taraba State Assembly sets up Ad-hoc Committee over Herdsmen/farmers’ clash

Heartland’s unbeaten record wonderful, says Ubido

Moses has ability H to be like Messi —Amokachi C

helsea’s Victor Moses has a comparable ability to Lionel Messi according to his compatriot Daniel Amokachi. Moses has enjoyed a superb season in a new role as a wingback for Chelsea and could end the season as a Premier League and FA Cup winner. But former Nigeria national team assistant coach Amokachi reckons the Blues have only scratched the surface of what Moses is capable of. “If Victor Moses wants to be Lionel Messi, he can be Messi,” Amokachi told reporters. “It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a player who has so many qualities. “We have talked a lot. And what I told him, I told him every time. If you want to be the best that you can, then you have to work harder. “In the past he was a player who can sometimes switch off. “You speak to people who train with Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi and they tell you it is incredible how hard they work. “That seems to have sunk in now thanks to Conte.”

eartland captain and defensive midfielder, Julius Ubido has described as wonderful the side’s seven-match unbeaten record in the on-going Nigeria’s second tier league. The Naze Millionaires defeated Akwa Starlets 2-0 in Wednesday’s Nigeria National League (NNL) matchday 13 clash at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri to consolidate on its summit position as well as extend the on-going season’s unbeaten run to seven. Ubido said his side have no intention to stop winning as that singular act brings more fortune to their individual purse. “Seven-match unbeaten is a wonderful experience for a brand new team like Heartland. “At the time of relegation to the lower league virtually all the first team players left the side to seek greener pastures elsewhere leaving just a handful of us and the rookies to steer the team’s fortune. “So we feel exceedingly great to have gone seven matches unbeaten in the ongoing season. “We want to extend the unbeaten run indefinitely till the main target is achieved – promotion. “We do not want to stop winning as that in a way guarantees a sure and steady income in form of bonus which aside God’s grace has been the inspiration and motivation for us to keep doing well.

The win guaranteed them a place in the semifinal. The Rainoil-sponsored Emmanuel had his serves puzzling the opponent while Hemery, of Nigerian descent, did the damages by consistently hitting the winners. UCL: No divided loyalties for Zidane’s Juve reunion Z

Zidane

inedine Zidane insists he will have no divided loyalties after leading Real Madrid to a second consecutive UEFA Champions League (UCL) final where they will meet his old club Juventus on June 3. Real withstood a first-half onslaught from local rivals Atletico Madrid to progress 4-2 on aggregate despite losing 2-1 in their semifinal, second leg on Wednesday. Italian champions Juventus await, who Zidane left for a then world record fee when he first joined Real as a player in 2001. “For sure it is special because it was a very important club for me as a player. It is a club that also gave me everything,” said Zidane. “Now, though, I am with Real Madrid, the club of my life and it will be a great final.” Zidane admitted ahead of December’s last 16 draw that Juven-

T

he string of groundbreaking feats with regards to global recognition for Nigeria in world football continued on Thursday with the election of immediate past Chief Judge of Lagos State, Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips as a Member of the highly respected FIFA Ethics Committee. In what amounted to another re-

markable accomplishment for Nigerian Football, Justice Phillips’ election was ratified by the congress of FIFA at its 67th Congress in Manama, Bahrain on Thursday. This is further evidence of the rising profile of Nigeria in International Football circles as shown by the recent appointments of the NFF President into important CAF and FIFA roles. The new FIFA Ethics Committee (Adjudicatory Chamber) is headed by Vassilios Skouris (Greece), the longest –serving President of the European Court of Justice. Fiti Sunia (American Samoa), a Judge and former Attorney General of American Samoa, is deputy chairman. Other Members are Mohammad Ali Al Kamali (United Arab Emirates: Asia), Aivar Pohlak

(Estonia: Europe), Margarita Echeverria (Costa Rica: North and Central America and the Caribbeans), Jack Kariko (Papua New Guinea: Oceania) and Flavio Zveiter (Brazil: South America). Justice Phillips is presently the Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC). Only on Monday, NFF President Amaju Pinnick, who was elected as Member of the CAF Executive Committee in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in March, and has also been appointed into the influential Organizing Committee for FIFA Competitions, became the first Nigerian to be appointed President of the Organizing Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations. He was also appointed President of the Media Committee.

tus were the team he wanted to avoid due to his respect for Massimiliano Allegri’s side, who eased past Monaco 4-1 on aggregate in the other semifinal. “I can’t do anything about it now,” added Zidane. “They have got to the final and deserve to be there, as do we.” Ultimately, Cristiano Ronaldo’s first leg hat-trick proved the difference as for the fourth straight season Real eliminated Atletico from the Champions League. Atletico had threatened an incredible comeback, Saul Niguez’s powerful header and Antoine Griezmann’s penalty inside 16 minutes cutting Real’s aggregate lead to a solitary goal. However, Isco’s away goal just before halftime settled Real’s nerves and left Atletico with too much to do to progress. Real can now make history by becoming the first side to retain the trophy in the Champions League era. However, Zidane preferred to highlight the strength of his squad rather than his own role in a remarkably successful run since he took his first senior managerial job 17 months ago. “I am delighted. I am the coach which means I am doing something right, but everyone in this squad is doing a phenomenal job. “The squad should get the credit because it is they who are playing, running, fighting on the field.” Real were without the injured Gareth Bale for both legs of the semifinal. However, Zidane is hopeful the Welshman could be fit for a homecoming final in Cardiff.

Nine power licences may face revocation Simon Ugwu

About nine electricity generation licenses may face revocation by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for lack of renewal after a decade. The nine permits stand to add 1,653 megawatts (MW) to the national grid when they start operating. Daily Times gathered that a good number of the licenses issued have not started operation, but some of them renewed while nine among them will soon expire if not renewed by the owners. The list of power generation permit holders showed that NERC might have revoked two licences which expired in April and were not renewed by their owners. The list also indicated that between May and September 2017, another set of licences would be up for revocation by the regulator if their holders fail to renew them. The permit include a 90MW generation license held by Anita Energy Limited which was to be sited in Agbara area of Lagos, as well as another 90MW licence held by Bresson A.S. Nigeria Ltd for an on-grid generation project in Magboro, Ogun State. On this list are three generation licences held by First Independent Power Co. Ltd for 95MW capacity power plant in Eleme, 150MW capacity plant to be sited in Omoku, and 136MW plant at Trans-Amadi.

Ignore rumours of financial distress in banks – NDIC

Managing Director of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, has urged the public to discountenance rumours of financial distress in some banks. A statement by the NDIC said that rumours were being circulated via text messages and social media to de-market those banks and destabilise depositors’ confidence in the banking system. The statement, signed by its spokesman, Hadi Birchi, said that the NDIC boss made the call when the Alumni Association of the

National Institute (AANI) paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja. He said the NDIC had over the years played critical role in ensuring that Nigerian banks were safe and sound through effective supervision and assistance to deserving financial institutions. Ibrahim said the NDIC had continued to closely monitor the challenges facing the industry in order to further safeguard depositors’ interest in the banking system. He listed challenges affecting the banking industry to include, poor corporate governance,

insider loans and non-performing loans. He said that with NDIC’s strict supervision and regulation of the banking industry in collaboration with CBN, depositors should have full confidence in the safety and security of their funds in licensed banks. Ibrahim said the NDIC in collaboration with other stakeholders were proposing the establishment of a Centre for Financial and Economics Studies at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru. According to the NDIC boss, the

centre would train participants in essential areas of financial and economic management. Earlier, Mr Bola Balogun, Chairman, AANI Abuja Chapter, commended the NDIC for its supervisory role, describing it as an invaluable anchor for the security and stability of the nation’s financial system. Balogun also lauded NDIC’s efforts toward protection of depositors’ funds and consumer protection activities.

Members of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Faculty of Housing have called for the unbundling of the nation’s mortgage system in a manner that allows key players perform specialized roles. This is even as they called for the recapitalization of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to N500 billion to widen the national mortgage space and deepening the housing finance market.

These and more were contained in a communiqué signed by Dr. Victor Akujuru, Oladapo Olaiya and Solomon Mkpese, at the end of its annual housing summit recently. The body recommended that governments should develop a statutory housing strategy towards increasing the supply of homes to address the menace of homelessness, overcrowding and rough sleeping in the cities. Besides, they say, Federal Government and its agencies should develop already acquired land in the states; cities regeneration

should be adopted as one of the options for housing delivery in the country. “Government should intervene in that areas of reducing restrictions or challenges in accessing land for developers, provision of infrastructure to reduce cost of construction, creation of financial instruments to facilitate funding for housing, and practice efficient bureaucracy devoid of unpatriotic political distortions to ensure uninterrupted implementation of housing policies. “In the exercise of is power of eminent domain, government

should initiate, on terms that are not exploitative, compulsory redevelopment lease on properties that are economically and functionally obsolete but with reasonable structural integrity and potential, which can be unleashed with the infusion of public funds as the owners may not be in a position to afford,” the group said. Lastly, the group made case for the appointment of estate surveyors as project manager to the housing project, “as he remains the only neutral professional to any building project and his expertise is required right from conception of the project up to site acquisition through design

Estate Agents Marketing: Earn extra skills, become successful Acquiring estate agents marketing skill is the extra knowledge that will separate you from the bunch of agents in Nigeria. It’s that extra that separates a successful marketer from others. Daily, we network, make contacts, make calls and move from one place to the other. The truth is that all our activities are geared toward selling ourselves, our products, passions, skills, knowledge and our goods. This is the special skill, estate agents marketing needs, or should I say virtues you need to successfully seal a deal, as a real estate marketer. It is the extra estate agents marketing

skill that makes an extra-ordinary person. LEARN THE ROPE When it comes to estate agents marketing, success begins from learning. Therefore, if you want to enter the real estate business as an agent, land surveyor, contractor, developer, consultant, labourer, you must go through either formal learning at schools or be apprenticed to individuals, firms or organizations, that will guide you on the nitty-gritty of the estate agents marketing skill. For instance, you can acquire the skills of real estate marketing from www.schoolofestate. com, the institution is doing a good job on providing informa-

tion to guide person interested in real estate business. HAVE GOOD VIRTUES It is observed that some world class marketers virtually in every field of human endeavor have some peculiar habits, characters, or virtues that stand them out as extraordinary. Yes, 13-letter word again. Some of these attributes are: aggressiveness, go-getter, persuasive, pleasant personalities, social, friendly, ever-smiling. BUILD CREDIBILITY For you to sell real estate products and services effectively you must be credible or else you will soon run out of business.

Having gotten estate agents marketing skill, translate them to attracting clients and customers. How? Tell the world what you know and can do and over time, people will patronize you, regardless of the country you are operating from. There are people abroad, who are interested in getting information on how to go about buying a piece of real estate in Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, Kano, Port Harcourt etc, without going through much stress. It is pretty difficult to trust some persons with money. But, we also know that there are some Nigerians, firms and companies that have the credibility to deliver on their promises.

The Managing Director of Buildcon Global Services Limited, Mrs. Bukunola Gadzama, has affirmed that the real estate company is delighted at the commendations made on the company’s products at this year’s CEMCS exhibition in Lagos and promises to maintain standard that would surpass subscribers’ expectations. She stated that the company is driven by passion to offer subscribers’ value for money and to surpass its competitors in order to have a large market share in the lucrative real estate sector. With this, the company is well prepared and positioned to uphold quality standard with state-of-the-art facilities in the construction of its housing projects in view of the increase in commercial and high-end residential real estate development, particularly in key cities such as Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. This is in line with its mission of executing unique strategies in creating home ownership solutions in a dynamic real estate market, while providing matchless services to customers. Gadzama stated that this would not be restricted to the Pracht Gardens Estate, but also in other projects such as the Pracht Court in Ajah, Pracht Clusters at Chevron and another at Sangotedo in Lagos. The company which made entrant into the real estate sector in 2013 has created a niche for itself through competent engineers with architectural skills and interior designs. The accolades on the company’s products were from subscribers, visitors as well as stakeholders who commended the architectural design and focus, particularly on quality and affordability. Those that have seen Pracht Gardens Estate particularly praised the company for the state-of-art facilities used in its construction and the layout which they agreed “shows what a dream home should be.” “In creating these luxury apartments, we took into consideration the need for affordable housing, security, space optimisation, comfort, childfriendly environment and quality,” Gadzama said.

By Ebere Chibuzor The Federal Government is planning to set up a committee to drive its culture and tourism agenda. Minister of culture and tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed gave the hint during a discussion at the Nigerian Association of Tour Operators, (NATOP) AGM with theme: Positioning Tourism within the Nigerian Economic space, held recently at Renaissance Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. According to him, the ministry hopes of striking relationship with UNWTO and CNN aimed at using film industry to promote tourism, and the best example is Nollywood, which has no doubt makes a huge impact on tourism. ”He noted that Nigeria has been identified as a very rich tourism destination, stressing that” we are laying the strong foundation to make it a viable destination, not just a potentially viable destination. He stated that the current administration has the political will to promote and grow tourism, emphasizing that tourism is the only oil that never dries up, just he also noted that a number of policy changes are being implemented to achieve positive result. The minister observed that the efforts of NAPTOP around the country has been of enormous benefit in trying to improve the tourism outlook, equally noted that added value is when the tour operators combined with the ministry, gargantuan problem may not seem so daunting. He pointed out the Cross River Tourism success story and challenges in building the Carnival to its present level, including government policies like Customs, Immigration, roads and other things, urging, the state has gotten the Carnival to the level that no governor can reverse it. reiterate our mandate of promoting domestic tourism which is what propels inbound tourism. Speaking also on a more tourism viable chain between the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies, NANTA, NTDC and other tourism and travel bodies, the President of NANTA Mr. Bankole Bernard said: “For us in NANTA, we have had a meeting with the DG and one of the things we have done is to breakdown the wall between NTDC and the trade associations like NANTA. To us we recognise NTDC as a corporate member of NANTA just to make sure there is seamless relationship and engagements, so every event of NANTA or these trade associations, we have informed the DG that he has to partake in them because all the trade associations belongs to him and he belongs to us and what has been happening in the past is the distance we have created or the wall that has separated us is what has created the vacuum and has made tourism to suffer all this while, but all that has been eliminated now and with the great support we are getting from the minister, I think we are all in for a good time.” Other side attractions at the event were inauguration of committee of experts on culture and tourism, youth session and admission of new members, presentation of certificate to some practitioners amongst others.

NCAC, ANJET seek closer culture ties

Otunba Runsewe

The National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), has said that it would continue to seek ways to further deepen the relationship with Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Tourism (ANJET). This was disclosed by the Director General NCAC, Otunba Segun Runsewe during ANJET courtesy visit to the Corporation secretariat at Abuja, recently. Runsew expressed the interest of the Federal Government into the agency to repositioned culture and tourism as the lever of Nigeria’s economic growth. According to Runsewe, government’s policy towards leveraging

on the culture sector in its quest to diversify the economy and empower its stakeholders also informs the new mantra at the agency which is ‘culture is the new oil.’ Receiving a delegation from the Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Tourism (ANJET), the umbrella body of travel and tourism writers, in his office in Abuja, henceforth said NCAC under his stewardship will be refocused to ‘take control of the culture sector in the country.’ “My appointment was intended by the Federal Government as a move to reposition the culture

sector of which the NCAC is the biggest agency and make the people not just here but also the private operators see it as the new oil. And as we say here, crude oil will eventually dry, up but our culture will always be there. Culture will soon be our new cash cow for the Nigerian economy,” said Runsewe who had previously served as Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC). Runsewe, who used the platform provided by the visit of the ANJET delegation, said his agency will be retooled and effectively equipped to ‘take charge of the culture sector of the country’ so

as to better the lives and businesses of the practitioners in terms of exploiting the sector’s business potential. Speaking further, he applauded the visiting journalists for their support. “Thank you for finding time to visit my agency. You are part of my success story at my various duty posts in the course of my national call to service. I will always carry you along even in my new assignment because of my belief in the importance of the media. Earlier, head of the five-man ANJET delegation, Andrew Okungbowa, had presented a fivepoint agenda to the NCAC boss.
