Nordhavn • City & Port Development is developing the new urban areas of Copenhagen - among them Nordhavnen and Ørestad. The vision is to create urban districts of international class, attractive to live and work in and also exciting to visit. CPH City & Port Development is one of Denmark’s largest urban development corporations and is owned by the City of Copenhagen 55% and the Danish State 45% • Nordhavnen is Scandinavia’s largest metropolitan development project. The area is to be transformed from a dense industry and harbour area into an attractive urban city district in Copenhagen.

Metro Soil Deposit Cruise Harbour • There is nothing compared to the satisfaction of real time interaction with dirt, and the metro soil deposit provides plenty. The deposit is an efficient combination of the practical with the necessary, as superfluous soil from the new metro’s tunnel excavation provides the material necessary for the expansion of ‘Stubben’ the current industrial harbor of Nordhavn. • For 5 years Copenhagen has been nominated ’Europes Leading Cruise Port’, because of good infrastructure, and because fewer ports are able to take in big ships. For that reason a new harbour is under construction; 1.1 kilometers long and 70 meters deep. Address: Nordsøvej - Orientkaj

Nordhavnstunnel

• The North Harbour tunnel is a fast political realization of a link from the northern highway, Lyngbyvejen, to Amager through Nordhavn, enabling car traffic, approximately 45.000 of them each 24 hours, to go around the inner city – instead of right through it. • Still, financing the tunnel depends on a toll system, and currently it will not cost anything for a driver to choose to drive through the inner city instead. Obviously the project is an integral part of the Nordhavn development. • The project is a proposed PPP project, called the eastern ring road, and is estimated to cost around 30.3 billion DKK, the tunnel alone 1.3 billion DKK. Nørrebroparken Metro • The first plans for a Copenhagen metro took its origin in a need for a connection between the two stations Nørrebro and Nørreport, below Nørrebrogade. The decision to carry out the current plan, which began by connecting Frederiksberg and Nørreport, was decided by the Danish Parliament in 1992 as part of the law on Ørestad city. • The Metro city ring, stage two of the Copenhagen Metro to be completed in 2018, makes up for Nørrebro’s needs. Nørrebroparken is not a station, it is currently a main metro construction site, and it will, in the future, contain escape routes and ventilation outlets. Address: Nørrebroparken - Hillerødgade

Kvæsthusmolen & The Playhouse

• The project for the Kvæsthusmolen pier is part of a competition won by Lundgaard and Tranbjerg architects in 2002 along with the new playhouse, Skuespilhuset. The construction of the house was completed in 2007. COWI engineers received DKK 5 million to develop, demonstrate and test the energy concepts applied in the Playhouse as part of a large-scale EU-funded project called ECO-Culture. • The rest of the project for Kvæsthusmolen is currently under construction, starting with a large parking basement, the destination for our visit, but will, in time, become an important square in the inner harbor. Inderhavnsbroen - and 2 new channel bridges
• Studio Bednarski and Flint & Neill (bridge engineers, in collaboration with Hardesty & Hanover (mechanical engineers) and Speirs and Major (lighting designers) have won a competition to design a new opening pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the copenhagen inner harbour (inderhavnen). • Along with the connecting bridges, Trangravsbroen and Proviantbroen, the bridge is expected to open for the public in October 2013. Together these bridges expands pedestrian and bicycle traffic to Christianshavn and particularly Holmen, historically location for the military defense, now hosting offices, housing, education and recreational facilities. Frederiksberg Center • The decision to put the Metro line underground in Frederiksberg Municipality made it possible to create new urban spaces on top of the former railroad yard. The vision was to create a unified plan for the area to promote urban life and also ensure that recreational activities and outdoor life harmonized with the residents’ everyday occupations. • Frederiksberg Center is, in a way, the entrance to this part of Frederiksberg. The center was build from 1994 to 1999, and is now being refurbished – or, rather, redesigned. Address: Falkoner Allé 21

Nørreport

• ’Ny Nørreport’ – New Nørreport - is the collective name of the three projects which will be completed at Nørreport Station from 2011 to 2014. The long-distance platform is to be renovated, air quality will be improved, underground concrete structures are to be renovated and finally, a new station concourse is to be created. Nørreport has around 250.000 passengers daily. • ’Ny Nørreport’ – is also a new square in a modern interpretation of the old refurbished station from 1932. Fisketorvet - Cykelslangen • 4–5 meters above ground (and pedestrians) a new bicycle bridge will make it easy to get from Vesterbro to Havneholmen on the Amager side of the Copenhagen Harbor, as it connects with the Bryggebroen bridge. The current problem is that the level of connecting roads are several metres above the harbour. • The steel construction is supported by pillars, some placed in the water. The foundation is made on site as the prefabricated steel elements are being produced and afterwards sailed to the construction site. Steel elements and pillars are to be welded together. Ørestad • Ørestad consists of four quarters each featuring its own characteristics. Ørestad Nord, the area from Copenhagen University to DR byen, has been almost fully developed and in use, the Amager Fælled quarter has been partly urban developed, Ørestad City is already in use, and in Ørestad Syd the first dwellers have moved in. • BIG House (8Tallet) At the tip of Ørestad South, an area with direct views of Kalvebod Common, is a large figure-eight-shaped building called 8TALLET - formerly known as BIG House. It is the largest residential building in Denmark. The shape of BIG House is based on traditional blocks of buildings, but it is turned and twisted so that the building looks like a large infinity sign from above. A 1.5-kilometre-long path runs around the entire perimeter of the building. The ‘bow’ of the building creates two inner courtyards separated at the point where the two loops meet. This intersection contains the communal facilities, with a floor area of 500 m2. A ninemetre wide passage connects the urban spaces on either side of the building: the park to the west and the canal area to the east.

Amager Strand Beach

• Lapping waves, beach volleyball and life on the esplanade—just minutes from Kongens Nytorv by Metro. With the inauguration of the new Amager Strand Beach, this is now a reality for Copenhagen residents. The Amager Strand Beach complex consists of the beach along the coastal road, Amager Strandvej, a lagoon, an island, and the two parks, 10-øren and 5-øren (the Danish 10 Øre and 5 Øre coins). The island is 2 km long and the lagoon is 400 m at its widest point. Concrete beach stations in the middle of the island provide toilets, refreshment kiosks and other amenities. These beach stations also act as vantage points, providing a fantastic view of the large vessels plying the Øresund Sound, Øresund Bridge, and the planes preparing to land in Kastrup. The north of the new island is landscape of sand dunes, and the south consists of more park-like grounds. Beautifully designed pedestrian and bicycle bridges lead across to the new island’s north and centre. In the south, it is also possible to drive to the island without missing the natural scenery, the sky and the sea.

Nordvest Cultural Centre - Rentemestervej
• A bright and beautiful building on top of Bispebjerg in the northwest part of Copenhagen, shaped like a staggered stack of books, has become the first integrated arts centre and library of its kind in Denmark. The building includes a traditional library, spacious meeting rooms, café and lounge areas, and a computer workshop. ‘This new library and cultural centre will be a gathering spot in Bispebjerg,’ said the City of Copenhagen in the competition announcement. ‘The ambition is to create a unique framework for cultural reflection and development that can generate energy and strengthen community life.’

• The sculptor Bjørn Nørgaard used music as his point of departure when he modelled the first version of the building in clay, noting, “If it cannot be modelled, it should not be built.” Art was all-important and gave the project an organic and original design that makes the completed complex look like a sculpture. The complex comprises two buildings that wind like a serpent through the grounds. The buildings have three or four stories, with a tower-like expansion in places that rises to eight stories. The goal was to demonstrate that good artisanship could compete with today’s industrialized building. Windows are made of wood and aluminium, roofs of zinc or copper. The both red and yellow bricks refer to the classical blocks of apartments in the Nørrebro quarter, where red was used on the street side and yellow on the backyard side.

Bremerholm

• Cyclists from the area around Christiansborg or Holmen’s Church towards the City centre are currently having trouble due to directional constraints. Therefore, the city creates a counter-flow cycle lane on the link from the junction at Holmens Kanal / Bremerholm to the junction at Gothersgade / Kronprinsessegade. A parallel-flow cycle lane throughout the link makes cycling in the direction of the car traffic safer. At the Holmens Kanal junction, it will be possible to cycle down Bremerholm, then alongside Magasin and to the junction of Kronprinsessegade. From Havnegade you will be able to make a right turn at a red signal – what many cyclist do illegally today.

Bryggebroen • Brygge Bridge. In the fall of 2006, the Brygge Bridge became the first bridge built across the Copenhagen harbour in 50 years. This 190-metre-long swing bridge connects Fisketorvet Shopping Centre to the residential complex housed in the old seed silo of the Soya Bean Cake Factory. The bridge is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians, giving them a much-needed short cut between Vesterbro and Islands Brygge. For example, students from the west part of the city use it to reach the lecture rooms at the Amager-based part of the University of Copenhagen and the IT University in Ørestad more quickly.

Carlsberg • The Carlsberg Brewery production plant in Valby closed in 2008, with plans to re-emerge as a new sustainable city district with 3,000 housing units, industry and commerce. The conversion of the historical buildings on the old industrial site will follow a plan developed by the firm of architects Entasis. The kind of urban environment Entasis wants for the Carlsberg site is a dense city structure with attractive urban spaces, public transport, sustainable solutions for new buildings, and restorations of the existing ones, that adds up to create a sustainable city district. The project for the new Carlsberg city district, with its wide views, plentiful light, air and straight streets, points back to classic urban space and away from modernist suburban construction. In addition to a dynamic city life, dense urban structure makes for minimal strain on the environment. • The Danish Broadcasting Company (DR) has collected all its activities in the capital in a single complex. The media center is divided into four segments designed by 4 different architects and was built in different stages. The project was at the same time experimental carrying out new methods of digital design and communication. • The roof of DR Byen features a 1,060 m2 array of solar cells, making it one of the largest solar heating installations in Denmark. The solar cells produce in the neighborhood of 80-100 MWh per annum. This energy is used for instance for groundwater cooling of the buildings. Flintholm • The idea of a rail road ring around Copenhagen was conceived as early as 1885 by a danish engineer called Hammerich. The idea partly came to life in 1934, connecting Hellerup with Vanløse, but not until 2005 was it carried out to its full extend. • Trains depart every 5 minutes, and the station connects not only 6 stations from Hellerup to Ny Ellebjerg, open to the public in 2007, but also all 6 DSB train lines. • Successfull treatment of an urban arterial road. The about 5 km long Frederikssundsvej was reconstructed in 1998, in order to reduce accident risk, and to improve the sense of security for the numerous elderly inhabitants and road users, in particular pedestrians. Clearness, good crossing opportunities and a calm traffic were the keywords in the project. Questionnaires, talks and information leaflets for the users were important ingredients. The project was awarded the Traffic Life Award 2001.

• While Amager’s Holmbladsgade quarter came across as being rather dilapidated ten years ago, it is now on its way to becoming a new Vesterbro, with cafés, swish little boutiques and rapidly rising property prices. The metro stations of Amagerbro, Lergravsparken and the new Amager Strand have made the area attractive and brought about a transformation of the old working-class neighbourhood. • One architect with a significant impact on this part of town is Dorthe Mandrup. Two projects of particular interest are Holmbladsgade Meeting Place and ‘The Prism’ – a sports centre with a facade made of mainly polycarbonate. • In order to reduce car traffic and thus promote the use of bicycles and public transportation, Copenhagen decided in 2008 to close Nørrebrogade for passage at Fælledvej, Nørrebros Runddel and Nørrebrohallen in a three-month trial period. At that time, the daily bicycle flow was around 30.000. A traffic study demonstrates that the closures were effective. The figures show that vehicle traffic on Nørrebrogade generally dropped by 40 percent during peak hours. The decrease varies from 30 percent at Nørrebro Station to 80 percent on the stretch between Fælledvej and Elmegade. On the other hand, traffic increased up to 10 percent on Tagensvej and Åboulevarden. In 2009, a majority of Technical and Environmental Committee in Copenhagen decided to make tithe changes permanent. However, a number of amendments were adopted. Today which among only one bus gate at Fælledvej exists, while the closure on the outer Nørrebro at Nørrebrohallen was removed. The closure of Nørrebrogade has been very controversial. For example, half of Nørrebrogade‘s shop owners claim, according to a poll, that their sales have gone down because of the traffic changes.

Nørrebroruten • Nørrebro cycle route. The Nørrebro route is nearing completion as a pilot project. The route runs primarily along the former railroad yard from Hellerup through Nørrebro and Frederiksberg to Valby. The Nørrebro route includes a recent cycle and pedestrian bridge over Ågade that opened in 2008. These tranquil cycle ways are not intended to be a substitute for existing cycle ways, but a supplement where bikers can ride free of automobile traffic. Since about a third of all employees in Copenhagen bicycle to and from work, the cycle paths along the main access roads are sorely pressed. Both fast and cautious cyclists compete for space and constantly have to stop at traffic lights and at bus stops while passengers get off. Safety and comfort suffer as a result.

Operaen • Copenhagen’s opera house, known simply as the Opera, is built on a direct line across from Amalienborg Palace and emphatically terminates the axis that runs from the Marble Church, through Amalienborg Palace and the Amaliehaven gardens, across the Fairway, and in through the glass facade, stopping in the centre of the main auditorium. The entire Fairway, from Knippelsbro Bridge to the Citadel, has a view of the monumental building with its distinctive overhang. The Opera has 14 floors, five of them underground, and a total floor space of 41,000 sq. m. The building has over 1,000 rooms, including numerous rehearsal rooms for opera and ballet and a large rehearsal hall for the orchestra located five storeys underground. The main auditorium can hold an audience of between 1,492 and 1,703, depending on the size of the adjustable orchestra pit. Everything in the auditorium, from seat upholstery to the shape and size of the openings in the back wall, contributes to optimal acoustics. Olafur Elisasson designed the chandeliers in the foyer. The Red Corner Daycare Center • A primary goal is to integrate Sundholm with the surrounding neighborhoods in order to create a sense of regional cohesiveness. Attractive new connections will help bring Sundholm closer to Vesterbro, the Brygge Bridge, Ørestad North and Amager Strand. • Every component of The Red Corner was constructed at Scandibyg’s factory in Jutland, before being transported to Sundholm. This facilitated a quicker construction process and fewer disturbances for the surrounding area. The corner stone in the project is a container sized module with a wooden structural frame. Superkilen • In outer Nørrebro, between Nørrebrogade and Tagensvej, a new public space has come into existence. Under the name of Superkilen (The Super Wedge) a team headed by BIG Architects is about to create a three-coloured multicultural space meant to provide even better opportunities for city life in Nørrebro. If you begin your visit in Nørrebrogade, you will step into a big red landscape. Continuing through Superkilen, you will then pass through a hilly grass-green landscape to end in the jet-black bazaar. The three colours mark the different functions of the spaces - and the aim of creating a place with something to suit every taste. It opened in 2012.

Sønder Boulevard

• Landscaping of Sønder Boulevard in Vesterbro to make an active urban space with green areas and facilities for sports and games. From a worn down thoroughfare dominated by traffic, Sønder Boulevard has been transformed into a proper city space. It was completed in 2007.

• The Lake Cycle Route. The lake bike route following the Western border of the lakes from Østerbrogade to Gammel Kongevej was subject of public discussion for many years. It finally opened in 2008, and became successful. In March 2013, a number of further improvements were implemented.

Sluseholmen og Metropolis • The idea for a canal district on Sluseholmen originated with the Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters, who used his experiences from Java Island, a residential district built on an artificial island in Amsterdam. And the Dutch inspiration is obvious. Newly dug canals form the basic structure. The new canal district was built on eight artificial islands with a pattern of continuous blocks with sheltered courtyards. • The unified plan’s dogmas comprised a unifying principle for Sluseholmen, but at the same time they ensured that it will be a quarter with great variety, where each building will have its individual distinctive features. In order to create this diversity, 25 architecture firms were asked to design the buildings. As a rule of thumb, at least five firms had to be involved in each block. Address: Sluseholmen

Teglværksbroen

• The Teglværksbroen Bridge provides the 1,800 residents on Sluseholmen with a solid connection to the neighbours on Teglholmen and a more humane route to the rest of Copenhagen. Sluseholmen in the South Harbour of Copenhagen has been more or less finished for a couple of years. Nevertheless, access to the area has always presented a challenge, but from 2011, the Teglværksbroen Bridge will provide the 1,800 residents on Sluseholmen with a solid connection to the neighbours on Teglholmen and a more humane route to the rest of Copenhagen. Teglværksbroen is a combined car, cycle and pedestrian bridge. Part of the bridge deck can be raised to allow ships to sail to the far end of the Teglværkshavnen harbour.

Tietgen Kollegiet - student’s residence • Round buildings are rare, though for a multitude of reasons quite rational. One of the sources of inspiration for the Tietgen student residence was the traditional Tulou construction of southeast China. • The round building has seven storeys. Five vertical lines divide the building both visually and functionally into sections and also serve as continuous passages that provide access from outside to the central courtyard and to the different storeys. Transmission of sound was a major problem in the construction. • The façade material is tombak, an alloy of copper & zink, the content of zink is only around 10% making the material quite unsustainable! … But it is durable and pretty. Utterslev Mose • Utterslev Mose is Copenhagen’s main park area and a paradise for nature lovers. The marsh is located close to the city, yet you can quickly get far away from the vibrant surroundings. Here are large lakes and islets with a rich bird life, surrounded by elongate, green expanses. From the bog highest point, you can see all the way to the capital. The marsh includes of four areas of water - West, Central, East and Church marsh, and many birds breed here. It is also a valued area for the exercise of several kinds - walking, cycling and especially football at the many football fields.

• Copenhagen has got 3 new squares in the city, each with its function as beads on a string tied together by Vester Voldgade’s new green tree structure, a new wire suspended lighting and new wide footpaths and open spaces in the sunny east side. Vester Voldgade, formerly medieval city edge against the green ramparts, experienced today as a mere “traffic street”, mainly “along” while the adjacent large squares Vartov and Dantes Plads today is used only for parking and not stand out particularly in line with the street. • In some places, the last asphalt and markings are still missing, including bicycle symbols that will be created when the weather permits. The parts where there is still work, or where there has been no change yet, will be finalized by other actors such as Copenhagen Energy and the Metro Company who have own construction projects on the line.

• Vestvold Cycle way. Cycle way on former fortification line. In 1936 the report Green Spaces of the Copenhagen District” laid out a plan for a comprehensive cycle way network. An act from 1940 enable the government to acquire land for construction of walking and cycling paths. During World War II, a number of these routes were realized as an employment project.
