International Project Week 2013

Welcome Welcome to the 7th International Project Week, IPW. We are very happy to welcome IPW in Copenhagen for the second time, because we have extra ordinary memories from our first hosting of IPW in 2007. Remembering the purpose with IPW – getting international friends, learn about other countries civil engineering – we have made a program for the next four days. Lectures and biking around in Copenhagen give insight in more of the big Civil- and Building projects in Copenhagen and good opportunities to empathize with the atmosphere in the city and learn to know your group members. It is springtime and everything can happen. We have put up the frames for an academic achievement and social relationships; it is your task to fill it out.

Assignment for the Group Work Both the assignment for Monday and Thursday is based on Monday’s lecture and the coming visits on Tuesday and Wednesday. You therefore need the program for your group’s excursions to work with the assignment. Monday’s assignment 13:15–16:00 Ask you self in the group, what is interesting about the coming visits depending on which theme, view or impression the group wishes to work with, compared to Thursday’s assignment*. Answer your own questions based on Monday’s lectures and by searching for information about the visits. Discuss which expectations the group members have concerning the visits. Make a work plan for the week, by delegating assignment in the group. For example filming, diary/ journal for the visits, ideas for the layout of the presentation. Write the result of the group work on an A0 poster. * Theme or view could for example be based on the themes for the week, digitalization, infrastructure, and urban development or biking. Or the view of the assignment could be based on static, users, environment, but it is also okay just to select four visits for the assignment.

Bike Excursions 14 and 15 May 2013 Experience the City of Cyclists as a cyclist, experience traffic and many interesting places on two whole day cycle tours in small groups with local guides. Cycling is a natural part of life in Denmark, and so it is in the IPW. For two days, you will travel to and from your site visits by bike. Groups and Hosts 28 student groups are formed for the IPW (and some staff groups as well). The groups consist of 6-7 persons. Each group has one, and some groups two, Danish students who will act as your hosts during the week. The idea is that each group sticks together during the two days of cycling, and that you decide for yourself how fast you want to proceed, where you want to stop, and what you want to look at. Routes Four 35-40 kilometres long routes are planned. See the routes, including descriptions, on Google Maps and on the separate route maps. Groups and Routes Cluster

Day

Schedule and Time Frames The tours begin and end at the Danhostel. Basically, you have the whole day at your disposal, and only a few fixed times are set: the starting time where you get your bike and helmet, the finish time where you have to hand in your bike, and the starting times for your visits at the construction sites. The scheduled fixed times are in the time tables on the route maps Scheduled fixed times

Info The time tables on the route maps include distances and approximate travel times. They were calculated with a low speed – allowing for stops, breaks, or alternative routes. The route maps include the timetable, and a number of points of interest. The figures refer to the descriptions in the programme booklet. The texts are mainly taken from various official websites and from the online architecture guide . You may access the maps by scanning the codes in this section at page 16. www.dac.dk/en/dac-life/copenhagen-x-gallery/

Cycling Cycling is a beautiful way of getting to know Copenhagen. However, I would like to make a few points: • Locks - keep your bike locked whenever you leave it. Unfortunately, many bikes disappear every day in Copenhagen. • Helmets - together with your bike, we have rented a helmet for you. Use it. We do not want any of you to be seriously injured if an accident should occur. • Rain - from time to time, it may be raining in Denmark in May. Please consider that when you pack. • Food and drink - Yes. There is time for it, and many places to buy something. However, it may be cheaper and easier to carry a lunch pack from the hostel. • Traffic rules - cycling in Denmark is relatively straightforward. We have right-hand driving. And left turns are taken in two steps: First, you proceed at the right hand side of the road to the

18

opposite corner, and second, you turn left when the traffic allows it (at signalized intersections many people wait for the traffic lights to change to green in their ‘new’ direction, but you don’t have to do that). • Punctures - we will ensure that your Danish hosts are able to help you out in case you should get a flat tyre. • Accidents - be careful and take your time. However, if something happens, make sure that you get help (call 112) and inform us. Finally • Safety Gear - do not forget to bring your construction site safety gear with you both days. Safety shoes, vest and helmet.
