Our Construction Craft programmes benefit from new, fully-equipped workshops within the purpose built construction area, giving you access to a wide range of resources covering Construction Crafts and Technical/ Professional programmes.

Sport Facilities
Engineering
Sport and exercise students will have full use of the fitness suite, a full sized sports hall, changing facilities and modern fitness testing.
Up-to-date engineering workshops and science laboratories are available within the new college to support full time programmes, including a state-ofthe-art fabrication welding and machinery facility.
Students will also be offered the opportunity to take part in a variety of sporting activities over lunch, or after college, with a view to improving their fitness level, muscle tone and exercise technique. Activities include body tone, circuit training and five-a-side football. Students who demonstrate a keen interest in football may wish to join the College football team.

Learning Resource Centre Our experienced staff are available to assist you in finding the materials you need. With quiet study booths, as well as small tables for group discussion, the resources include PCs with the latest software to help you with your study, including specialist software packages for your course.
All students attend an induction that is tailored to their learning needs and the studying/ research they will be undertaking. Daily newspapers and journals are available, plus photocopying, scanning and printing facilities.
All PCs have internet, email and Microsoft packages, plus electronic resources allowing you to access relevant and up-to-date information, online databases, e-books and online reference material.

Student Services is open all year round and will provide you with a wide range of information and support services. Make this your first port of call for course information, careers advice, welfare advice, financial support and childcare support.

Clear & simple
The College has student mentors who are available to support students just when they need it most. The mentor team can help students work through a variety of problems which may be preventing them from achieving at college, including personal, financial, social or learning related issues. Support and encouragement is given to help every student to succeed.
Advice and guidance is available from Student Services and Connexions. They are able to give impartial advice and guidance about further and higher education, work-based learning and employment, including help with job searches and university applications. In addition, you will also get on-going advice and support from your tutor.
Redcar & Cleveland College was one of the first in the North East to be accredited across the entire organisation with the nationally recognised quality mark for organisations which provide support to individuals to make learning and work more accessible – the Matrix Standard. The Standard was awarded for the excellent information, advice and guidance service given by the College, so if you need pointing in the right direction, you can be assured that we are a nationally recognised and approved centre.

Extra support We’re about more than just learning – we’re here to help you in any way we can The College offers a wide range of support to help students succeed on their main course. All full-time students take an assessment of their literacy and numeracy skills – so any problems can be highlighted and an extra tutor can be put into class for one-to-one sessions or for individual help. The Learning Support staff have experience in working with students

with dyslexia, dyscalculia and other specific learning needs. As well as providing extra tutor support within vocational areas, the College also has a team of Learning Support Assistants who can assist in classes with note-taking, task focus, concentration and mobility issues. Also available is a fully-equipped care room with a tracking hoist and a changing bed.

The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) is a means tested grant of up to ÂŁ30 per week for eligible students who are not in receipt of EMA and are studying full time for a first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification.
The College has a Learner Support Fund which is means tested and can provide financial support towards the cost of fees, books, equipment, travel and childcare.
Redcar & Cleveland College has links with childcare providers in the area. Students under 20 years old may receive help with childcare costs through the Care to Learn scheme.

The College offers a range of enrichment opportunities which allow students to get involved in what really matters to them. This could be a group, team, society, trip or event. It can involve as few or as many students as you like; it just needs to be something you think can improve the student experience. Activities over the previous year have included a Freshers’ Fair, road safety awareness, sexual health awareness, a football tournament, street dance, drama performances, bowling, basketball, fencing and The Duke of Edinburgh Award.

A new route to university At Redcar & Cleveland College there is a clearer route to a place at university and a successful career with our exciting Expressway programme.
Students have a choice of six Expressway routes; each one will allow you to focus on a broad range of careers and contains nationally recognised National Diploma qualifications used for entry to university degree programmes. The Expressways are designed to take you on to a wide range of degree courses, either locally or nationally, but it has a special link with Teesside University.

A university entrance qualification equivalent to three A Levels What are they? Level 3 programmes equivalent to three A levels accepted for entry to university.
What do the diplomas lead on to? A university degree programme and employment.

How do they differ from A levels?
Generally four GSCEs grade C and above or BTEC First Diploma or NVQ Level 2 in a relevant area.
The diplomas have a strong vocational focus which draws on experiences related to the specific subject area.
Assessment is formative with assignment and portfolios along the way rather than a big exam at the end. These are unique courses suited to learners who already have an idea of the kind of employment or higher education study they want to go on to. You will be given the opportunity to study a Level 4 Teesside University module, which you can take with you and have accredited towards the first year of your degree progamme.

For parents we are able to offer information, advice and guidance regarding their son/daughter’s progress and the opportunity to discuss these matters directly at parents’ evenings and through students’ reports. All students have a personal tutor and are supported by Student Services with access to individual advice and support, welfare advice, learning support and careers guidance. All fulltime students will have regular group and individual tutorials with their personal tutor. Each student will have their own individual learning plans with targets
for their learning. The College recognises the transition from school to college isn’t always easy and that the individual care and attention given to support student progress is vital if they are to succeed. The College also has Transition Mentors who work in schools with Year 10 and 11 students. Our Student Mentors work across the College with students who may, for whatever reason, be struggling with college work or life in general. They are able to work with students to help overcome any problems which may be preventing them from achieving their full potential.

How to find us The campus is based on Corporation Road, Redcar. It is a five minute walk from the town centre and Redcar Central Station. It is situated on a green-field site with easy access from Middlesbrough and East Cleveland either via road, rail or bus. The campus is open 8.30am to 9.00pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.30pm Friday.

City & Guilds
The Diploma is a new qualification that combines theoretical study with practical experience. It is designed to equip young people for the fast changing world they are growing up in. The Diploma requires students to achieve a minimum standard in English, Maths and ICT, complete a project, do a minimum of 10 days’ work experience as well as study a principal subject area. Diplomas are at three levels; Foundation (level 1), Higher (level 2) or Advanced (level 3).
City & Guilds offer work related qualifications which give the skills to actually do a job. There is a large focus on learning practical skills. Assessment can take the form of online multiple choice tests, assignments or written exams.
Qualifications Explained
CACHE CACHE offers qualifications in the care and education of young people. They are a starting point for those looking for a career as a nanny, childminder, nursery nurse or nursing assistant, teaching assistant, playleader or playworker.

BTEC Entry Level
BTEC Introduction Level
BTEC Entry qualifications develop the initial skills for either a broad work sector or everyday life where confidence is needed by students. BTEC Entry Certificates are designed for students with learning difficulties or those who struggle with traditional learning.
BTEC Introductory qualifications are at Level 1 and offer an entry point to an industry sector and encourage the development of personal and workrelated skills. The BTEC Introductory qualifications are designed for those who are not able to achieve A*-C grade GCSEs, but who are motivated by a work related course.
BTEC National Diploma
BTEC First qualifications are Level 2 qualifications which are the equivalent of traditional GCSEs grade A*-C. The BTEC First is designed for those who are capable of achieving A*- C grade GCSEs, but wish to focus on a work related vocational qualification or work area.
BTEC National Diplomas are two-year Level 3 qualifications that are focused on both practical and theoretical study and are equivalent to three A levels. They are available in a wide range of subjects and can be used to gain access to university.

NVQs are job specific qualifications that can be taken at a number of levels. NVQs show employers that you have received training and have reached a certain level of skill in your chosen area.

GCSEs
Functional Skills
These courses last for one year. The College offers the opportunity to take GCSE courses in Maths and English, which are essential qualifications for some careers. These courses might help you to improve your existing GCSE grades. GCSEs in Biology and Chemistry are also available.
From September 2010, all full-time students will take the new Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths and/or IT. These are also available on a stand-alone basis. Functional Skills range from Entry Level through to Level 2. The level you are entered for will be determined by past achievements and initial/diagnostic assessment.
Apprenticeships are designed to provide young people with relevant, practical training, which will enable them to progress within their chosen industry. Apprentices are recruited just as any other employee of the company and paid a wage or a training allowance. An apprenticeship is a work-based programme with a strong emphasis on practical training and assessment leading to NVQs at Level 2.

Provide a high-quality route into work for school leavers. They are intended to offer an alternative to A levels. Each Advanced Apprenticeship offers a young person the chance to take a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 3 and specific key skills. Additionally, the apprenticeship may include other requirements based on what the individual employer regards as important for the young person and for their business.

The Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment has been designed to provide a programme of applied and practical learning, which introduces learners to the fabric of the world in which we live and its impact on the individual and communities. It progressively builds an understanding of the physical extent and significance of the built environment and of the activities which shape and influence it. What do I need? Construction BTEC National Diploma Level 3 What’s it all about? This course is for students who wish to study architecture, quantity surveying, building surveying and construction. Students will study environmental science, building surveying and design procedures, maths, surveying and levelling and many more modules. What do I need? Four GCSEs at grade C or above to include Maths and preferably English, or equivalent such as a BTEC First Diploma or an Intermediate NVQ Level 2 course. How long will it take? Two years. What successful students may go on to do: • Higher education courses in subjects such as: quantity surveying, civil engineering and technical architecture

Brickwork Diploma Level 1 What’s it all about? Students will complete a number of modules including handling and storing resources, preparing materials for use and many more to build their knowledge of brickwork technology. What do I need? No formal requirements are necessary, although GCSE results are important for exemption. How long will it take? One year. Apprenticeships: Hairdressing Level 2/Level 3 What’s it all about? The Hairdressing Apprenticeship Level 2 consists of an NVQ and Key Skills Application of Number and Communication at Level 1. The Level 3 Apprenticeship includes an NVQ and Key Skills Communication and Application of Number at Level 2. What do I need? There are no formal qualifications needed to commence the Hairdressing Apprenticeship, although we prefer that you have a good standard of education with GCSEs at grade C. You will be required to sit an aptitude test for English and Maths to support your application. How long will it take? Each level takes 12 – 18 months.
