We believe this is an exciting opportunity to change lives, aspirations and prospects in a broad, balanced and truly inspirational educational environment. Our aim is to enable each student to develop confidence, understanding, experience and skills that can be used throughout their lives. We also want to ensure that the Academy for Thornaby not only benefits the students who will be attending it, but also the wider community. We believe that the Academy can, and should, make a difference to young people and adults alike, and that parents, carers and the wider community can make a big difference to the experience of young people at school.
Each Sponsor has strong local links and we are committed to using our expertise and knowledge to create an Academy we can all be proud of. We will be working with local partners including the Stockton-on-Tees family of schools, ‘Campus Stockton’. Our goal is that the proposed Academy for Thornaby becomes a centre of excellence in learning for everyone in the Thornaby area, which is why we want to hear your views as we shape the activities, facilities and services the Academy will offer. The Proposed Academy for Thornaby Inspiring success and enterprise Academies offer young people a unique opportunity to benefit from 21st-century learning facilities, instilling a passion and commitment that will inspire them, their parents and carers, businesses and the local community.
Academies offer a distinctive approach to education, drawing upon the skills and expertise of the Academy Sponsors and community partners to deliver an inspiring education that motivates every student, raises standards and opens up opportunities for moving on to higher education, training or future employment. They offer a broad and balanced curriculum enhanced by one or more subject specialisms; at the proposed Academy for Thornaby we will specialise in Business and Enterprise with an emphasis on Digital Media.

Type of Academy
The Academy will be co-educational, open to boys and girls of all abilities, backgrounds and faiths.
Student places
There will be 750 places for 11 to 16 year-olds, plus 40 spaces for post16 learners on roll at Stockton Riverside College or Stockton Sixth Form College, but based on Academy premises. The Academy will admit 150 children into Year 7.
Admissions
The Academy intends to operate within the priority catchment area of the current school, and will comply with the Schools Admissions Code. The Academy will not select students by ability or aptitude for any subjects.
Current students
Students of Thornaby Community School will automatically transfer to the new Academy.
Lead Sponsor
The lead Sponsor is Teesside University.
Co-Sponsors
The co-Sponsors are Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council and a consortium of Stockton Riverside College and Stockton Sixth Form College.
Location and opening date
The Academy will initially open in the existing buildings of Thornaby Community School in September 2010, prior to a move into exciting new premises, on the existing school site, in September 2013.
Curriculum
The Academy will deliver a broad curriculum enhanced by the specialism of Business and Enterprise with an emphasis on Digital Media.

The Proposed Academy for Thornaby The Academy’s specialism The proposed Academy will deliver the national curriculum, enhanced and supported by the specialism of Business and Enterprise with an emphasis on Digital Media. The development of this specialism will be reflected throughout the curriculum and will provide our students with the skills, experience and vocational qualifications that will take them into the world of work, training or higher education.
Building upon the Sponsors’ excellent business partnerships, the Academy will extend and develop these strong links as part of the new Business and Enterprise specialism. Business has been chosen because of the importance of understanding key concepts of the business world. These include business skills for enterprise, communication, teamwork, self-responsibility, reliability and punctuality, as well as an understanding of how small, medium and large businesses operate.
The Academy will bring in specialists to apply their world class skills and knowledge of Digital Media.
The Academy will take full advantage of the University’s business networks and the Stockton Colleges’ extensive links with employers. The Academy will bring in specialists in digital innovation from Teesside University to apply their world class skills and knowledge of Digital Media, providing structured learning programmes for students to develop their skills in this area.
The Proposed Academy for Thornaby The Academy in the community The proposed Academy will develop strong partnerships with the local community and offer learning opportunities to people of all ages at the heart of the community. The Academy will: • Encourage parents and carers to become more involved with the Academy to support their child’s learning.
• Contribute to the regeneration of the community it serves by attracting regeneration to the local area. • Work closely with parents and carers, encouraging them to access the range of learning opportunities that the Academy will deliver beyond the school day. • Seek to work with its partners to enhance and build capacity and skills within the local community through a range of resources such as improved access to ICT and sports facilities.
• Work with the local business community to support the transformation process and ongoing improvement of the Academy.
The Academy will encourage parents and carers to become more involved with the Academy to support their child’s learning.
