This is issue of “Healthy Me, Better We” is packed with helpful tips for anyone looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the next few months. I can’t speak for anyone else but I find it particularly difficult to remain focused on healthy eating and exercising when I’m constantly faced with cookout food and fun!!! Lol. This summer I challenge each of my readers to remain on the path towards healthy eating and exercising- even if you find yourself having a cheat meal or a cheat day! Don’t let that stop you from getting back on track and continuing your journey. Allow yourself a few “cheats” here and there and then seek balance in your eating/exercise regimen. And don’t forget about other parts of you that need your attention too! - Health and wellness is not just about what we eat and how much we exercise. Be sure that you are taking care of yourself in areas of mental health, emotional health and spirituality, too. Take time out each day (preferably several times a day) to meditate on something positive. Take time each day/ week to cleanse emotional clutter and blockages that keep you angry, sad, or in some type of negative holding place. Let’s all commit to being better versions of ourselves so that we can show others how to become better versions of themselves! Share what you’ve learned and become a part of the solution!!!

Are you experiencing Summer Depression aka Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? Summer Depression also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of major depression that comes and goes based on the seasons. Usually symptoms present themselves during the fall and winter months, however, there are also cases where individuals experience depression beginning during the spring/summer months. Symptoms of Summer SAD are: Depression Trouble sleeping (insomnia) Weight loss Poor appetite Agitation or anxiety Common Causes: Longer days and increasing heat and humidity Disrupted schedules in summer Body image issues Financial worries related to vacationing and childcare. It’s important to know that some sadness is normal. But if you find that you feel “down” for several days at a time and you can’t get motivated to do activities you normally enjoy then schedule to meet with your doctor. Meeting with a doctor will become even more important if you your sleep patterns and appetite begin to change or if you feel hopeless, think about suicide or turn to alcohol/drugs for comfort or relaxation. Staying Motivated During the Summer Finally, it’s summer! That exciting time of year for warm weather, trips to the beach, and hopefully lots and lots of barbeque. Summer is also the time of year where staying motivated to maintain healthy habits becomes a little more challenging or even borderline impossible. Most of us have a general desire or drive to set and accomplish our goals, but most of us don’t want to sacrifice the joy, excitement, and experiences of summer to do so. And, we don’t have to. Here are some tips for staying motivated during the summer and maintaining those healthy habits: Tip #1: Re-fuel your tank. One way to stay motivated during the summer is to remind yourself of the initial reason you wanted to accomplish your goals. Perhaps, you wanted to take a dream vacation or start your own business, reminding yourself of what you’re working towards is a great way to re-fuel your motivation tank. Tip #2: Collect inspiration. Whether its music, literature, several Pinterest boards, or this newsletter, finding things that inspire you will help you stay motivated and on track to accomplish your goals. Tip #3: Link up. Meeting and dialoging with people who are also working towards a goal is a great way to stay motivated. If you are still having trouble staying motivated during the summer, don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s common to lose a little bit of “motivation mojo” Sometimes, all we need to stay motivated is to get a little rest and recreation.
