HEALTHY ME, BETTER WE
September 2015 Issue
A Letter from Your Virtual Assistant New Years Eve is not the only time of year when we can take a moment to reflect on how far we've come and how far we intend to grow. A New Season also triggers a certain kind of newness in the air which is sure to trigger anxiety that comes with change. This Fall 2015, as the temperature begins to drop and as the leaves begin to turn colors its important that each of us take time to look inward. This season marks the start of the final quarter of the year- the last stretch- which means its a great time to assess how far we've come and how far we still need to go to become better versions of ourselves. Take a moment each day to remember what goals you're working towards and what steps you need to take - today- to move towards those goals. Pay attention to the fear and anxiety and even discouragement that might attempt to throw you off the path and embrace those feelings. Don't run from them or try to ignore them. They'll just resurface again and again as you move down the path. Instead, become familiar with your negative feelings- undertand why they exist, where they originated from and how to defeat them, each time they show up in your life. Then move towards your goal in the midst of your negative feelings! As we each approach the upcoming months, lets do it with a positive mindset, a positive attitude and positive habits. We are not always going to be pleased with the way situations work out and that applies to relationships, work, church, presidential elections, interaction with customer service, driving on the road, etc. But this season, I challenge each you (self included) to approach the unpleasantness of each day in a positive and productive way and watch how it improves your overall health and well being! ...because healthy individuals create healthy families and healthy families build healthy communities! New Season, New Mindset The giant, blue gym mat that had always felt like a spring board, now felt like wet cement that was quickly drying under my feet. I stood there frozen, unable to perform an acrobatic skill that I had performed for years: a backflip. After five minutes of pantomiming the movements of a backflip and another five minutes being a living statue, my coach ushered me to her office to talk to me about mental blocks. On that day a few years ago, I learned that a mental block is an inability to execute or think of something you normally can do. Mental blocks are not uncommon and can be caused by a number of things including stress or even mental clutter. They can last for a few minutes, a few months, or longer if left unaddressed. The good news is that most mental blocks are temporary and most can be resolved by applying these tips: 1. Figure out the problem. Determine the source of the mental block. 2. Address the problem. Identify a practical solution. If you're stressed, consider practicing coping skills like deep breathing or take a break from the task that you're trying to accomplish. 3. Push Through! Sometimes, the best way to move forward through a mental block is to use any momentum you can muster to push yourself forward. Remember, a new season is a new opportunity to develop a new you, don't let mental blocks stop you! Be encouraged!

Hearty Holiday Helpings Recipe: Spicy Chili & Cornbread Ingredients: 2 cups of Red Kidney Beans 1 cup of Black Beans Part Red, Green, Yellow Peppers (minced) 1 Shallot (clove) or 1/2 of Onion (chopped) 1 Tomato (chopped) 1 Clove of Garlic 1/2 Teaspoon of Tumeric Chili Powder to taste Sea Salt to taste
1/3 Cup of Fresh Cilantro (chopped) 1 Teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper or, 1/2 Fresh Chili Pepper 1 Small bottle of mild Picante Sauce (optional) Cornbread mix of your choosing (Recommendation: Fleischmann's Simply Homemade Cornbread Baking Mix) *Suggestion: Soak the beans overnight to help reduce gassiness or add a quarter cup of Anise to the chili mixture. Instructions: 1. Boil the beans (in spring water / water should be at least 2 inches above beans to start) on medium heat until water turns "dark red/brownish" color. This may take about an hour & will be your base. 2. Reduce heat and add all other ingredients into the pot with the cooked beans. All ingredients should be submerged in water (may need to add just a little more water at this point) 3. Allow it to simmer until beans are completely soft & your base is of a thicker consistency. 4. Adjust seasonings to taste; taste will slightly change if you have to add water at any point. 5. If you prefer to bake the cornbread with the chili; place chili in a casserole dish & in oven on "Hi Broil" for 5 minutes to harden the top just a bit. Remove & pour completed cornbread mix unto the chili. 6.Place on bottom rack of oven (so heat can penetrate the cornbread mix) & bake according to cornbread specs or until mix is complete baked! *The middle can be tricky! Definitely broil for those few minutes.

An Attitude of Gratitude
As the fall season begins and 2015 nears its end, we are greeted with holidays that prompt us to take inventory and give thanks. However, for many, this time of year is a reminder of the things that haven't necessarily worked out in their favor. Life has a way of pruning us and growing us. My motto is "Sometimes you win-sometimes you learn", and when you take on that mentality it's so much easier to be grateful for absolutely everything. That's not to say that we wont have bad days and experience tough situations, but your response is what really makes a difference in your overall demeanor. Take a deep breath, stop stressing and think about the fact that things could actually be a lot worse than they are. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV) says to "give thanks in all circumstances...". Did you know that stress is the basic cause of 60% of all human illness and disease? When we adopt an attitude of gratitude and learn to see the good in bad situations, it relieves unnecessary stress, depression, tension and anxiety, which ultimately leads to a healthier living. Be grateful, relax and believe that things will work out... They always do!
