2010-2011 D1 SEASON PREVIEW For the past five years the Panthers dominated the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) at the Division II level with five consecutive Final Four appearances, four straight national championship games, topped off with three consecutive National Championships. Now the Panthers will have to shift their focus on a new obKyle jective. In the upcoming seaMcDowell son the Panthers will have to step up their game as they move into the top division, Division 1, in the ACHA. Over the past few years the Panthers have faced off numerous times against Division 1 opponents, and have faired very well. This season DU faces off against the best of the best in the ACHA. After opening with in-state rival Central Michigan, the Panthers travel down to Lindenwood University to play against the reigning Division 1 champions. Last season DU split with Lindenwood down in Arizona when they played two neutral site games. It was a very good series and will set the stage for a classic first weekend matchup. Lindenwood will drop their championship banner the opening night, as the Panthers will look to spoil the festivities. After Lindenwood, the Panthers have a buzz saw of a start as they are on the road versus perennial powerhouses, Liberty University who made it to the final eight teams last season, Ohio University who played in the final four, Iowa State who played in the national championship game and Central Oklahoma whom also made it to the final four. Davenport will host the University of MichiganDearborn for homecoming night on October 22nd. The Panthers will be dropping their third consecutive banner for homecoming, which is a tradition that they expect to continue in the future. The Panthers will honor all of last year’s team by inviting them to homecoming to collect their National Championship rings. The game will mark the first time that the Panthers will play an opponent in the newly formed Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League (GLCHL), which features five other Michigan teams: Adrian, Eastern Michigan, Michigan Dearborn, Oakland, and Western Michigan. Some old rivalries will also be in tact even though the Panthers have made the jump to the next level. DU will still play cross town rival Grand 6 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

Valley State University in the “Cross Town Clash” and will also continue the “Good Luck Duck Series” series with cross state rivals Oakland University. Davenport has a good mix of returning players as well as a very talented freshman class. In the off season, the Panthers added some size and grittiness to the team to help with the potent offensive attack that they have featured for the past few years. The returning players will be led by a solid group of seniors up front and on defense. Brit Ouellette, Bobby Collar, Sean McWhorter and Matt Morang will all help lead the returners on what looks like the most talented group of forwards ever at DU. Juniors Ben Dykstra and last year’s National tournament MVP Jeff Slusser will also be a force up front and it will be tough for opponents to stop those six forwards. Along with the scoring, the Panthers will look to Josh Andres to use his speed on key defensive and PK opportunities.

Joe D’Elia On defense, coach Bradford has a very familiar bunch with seven of the eight players returning from the previous year. Kevin Brojek turned into a shut down defenseman last season as he had a very impressive national tournament. Jared Mailloux, Brandon Davis, Phil Tesoriero, Jonathon Frank, Adam Gillikin, and Aaron Warsen will look to add solid defense as well. Rookie Phil Wendecker brings size, skill and leadership to the Panthers blue line and will be asked to shut down some of the best players in the ACHA. Coming into the season, the Panthers knew they had to add goaltending depth as their only returner from the previous season was Cam Thomas who finished his first year in a Panther uniform with a perfect 5-0 mark in seven appearances. This upcoming season the Panthers also added Phil Graveline and Joe D’elia, which gives the Panthers one of the best goaltending trio’s in the ACHA.

2009-2010 D2 SEASON IN REVIEW Defense of the Cup – For the second straight year the Panthers entered their schedule with a huge target on their back while having to defend the ACHA D-II National Championship. The Panthers again hosted their annual “Cross Town Clash” against GVSU where they raised the banner and handed out championship rings. DU won the game over the Lakers 3-0 extending their win streak over their rivals to eight games.

National Player of the Year – At the conclusion of the season, Davenport’s Bobby Collar was honored as the ACHA D-II National Player of the Year. Collar, a fourth year player out of Brighton, posted 85 points on 32 goals and 53 assists.

Undefeated ACHA Showcase – Early in October, the Panthers traveled to St. Louis to take part in the ACHA D Showcase and they came away with a perfect 3-0 mark against Missouri State, Colorado State and Kentucky. DU outscored their opponents by a combined 20-10 margin.

Uncharacteristic Losing Streak – For only the second time in program history, Davenport suffered through a four game losing streak midway through the first semester. DU dropped their conference home opener to Michigan State before falling in the Siena Showcase to William Paterson, Siena College and Florida Gulf Coast. The Panthers ended the streak with a convincing sweep of GMHL rival Miami (OH) at Patterson Ice Center. Florida/Arizona Trip – In mid-January, the Panthers hit the road for two consecutive weeks as they traveled to Florida and Arizona for games against the top teams in the nation. The trip was highlighted by a dramatic shootout win over defending ACHA D1 champion Lindenwood University as it marked only the second loss of the season for the Lions. DU ended the seven game stretch with a 4-3 overall mark. Quack, Quack Quack – The Good Luck Duck series between Davenport and Oakland came down to the final game of the year between the two teams. After dropping the first game to the Grizzlies, DU rallied to defeat their rival 4-1 on home ice before heading back to Rochester. The Panthers then won in a thrilling shootout when Marc Thompson scored the game winner to allow DU to retain the cup for yet another year. Three in a Row!!! – The 2009-10 Panthers entered the National Tournament with some question marks surrounding the team after an early exit in the GMHL Tourney. But a convincing 8-2 win over Bowling Green in the opening game gave the team the confidence they needed to secure their third straight national crown. DU defeated the home town team Central Connecticut State in the championship game 12-4 in a tournament they outscored their opponents 38-10.
