COACHING STAFF Head Coach | Ronda Varnesdeel (4th Year) Ronda Varnesdeel Ronda Varnesdeel begins her fourth season at the helm of the Softball program at Davenport. In 2010, Varnesdeel guided DU to a 46-16 overall record and they followed with a 38-18 mark in 2011. Last season, Varnesdeel led DU to their first WHAC Tournament and regular season championships and DU's first bid to the NAIA National Tournament. Her 46 victories in 2010 is the most ever in Varnesdeel’s coaching career, with her garnering 37 twice before while at Aquinas College and 38 last season for DU. Varnesdeel led her team to a 21-3 conference record in 2011 and a 1st place finish in the WHAC. Varnesdeel recorded her 200th career victory on Feb. 22nd against Concordia College (Minn.). Before starting the Panther program in 2009, Ronda spent six years at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich in which she was at the helm of the program for five of those years. While at Aquinas, Varnesdeel established the program as a small college softball powerhouse. She led them to four Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships in 2003 and 2005-2007. She was named WHAC Coach of the Year in each of those years as well as Region VIII Coach of the Year in 2005, a year in which she led her team to the NAIA National Tournament. Ronda was also a stand-out athlete for the Saints in which she was a four-year starter for the basketball and softball programs and led the Saints to a national championship appearance in both sports. Varnesdeel also earned all-conference and all-region selections during her softball career. In her three years of coaching at DU, Ronda has had one 2nd Team All-American, one All-American Honorable Mention Selection, 1one Conference Player of the Year, 10 All-Conference Selections, five All-Conference Honorable Mention Selections, 10 NAIA Scholar Athletes, and was honored as a NAIA Scholar Team with a cumulative team GPA of 3.3 in 2010. Varnesdeel, who received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Aquinas College, resides in Grand Rapids, Mich with her husband Bernard Jr. and their son Bernard III. Varnesdeel also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for the Panthers.

2012 SOFTBALL | 7
2012 SEASON PREVIEW The 2012 Davenport softball team is fresh off its most successful season in school history as they claimed their first ever WHAC Championship in the regular season and post-season tournament which helped them clinch the school’s first berth ever in the NAIA National Tournament. Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel returns a core of student-athletes that hope to keep the Lady Panthers on top in league play.
Liz Veltman
Infield The infield will be a veteran group led by returners Ali Dawson at first base, Morgan Greenfield at second and Liz Veltman at third. The two newcomers to the group are shortstop Paige Sant’Angelo and utility infielder Karli Myers. Senior Morgan Greenfield has been a part of the Panthers softball program since its inaugural year in 2009. This will be the fourth season that she will man the second base position after compiling a .950 fielding percentage in her previous three seasons. Liz Veltman returns to third base after starting all 56 games there last year. She set a single season record with 35 walks in the season and hit seven homeruns for DU last year. Liz will be looked at to provide a consistent bat in the DU lineup as well as some added power that was lost to graduation. After spending most of her time in the outfield last season senior Ali Dawson will return to the first base position after playing there in 2009 and 2010. In her previous two seasons at the position she compiled a .985 fielding percentage with 393 putouts in 2010. Outfield In 2012 Davenport will showcase one of their deepest and most athletic group of outfielders. Returning to the grass this year will be senior Katie Cornman and sophomore Amber Getty, they will be joined by newcomers Ashleigh Blovsky, Melissa Covert and Kayla Gonyea.
8 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS
Katie Cornman has been a consistent image in the DU outfield since the beginning of the program in 2009. Cornman appeared in 53 of DU’s 56 games last year posting a .312 batting average with 44 hits and 13 doubles. The centerfield position will be a lefty based position occupied by either Amber Getty or Ashleigh Blovsky. Getty returns after a fantastic freshman campaign in which she appeared in 51 games posting a .366 batting average with 45 hits and was second on the team with a .435 on base percentage. Her two homeruns last year came in back to back innings during the 2011 WHAC Tournament Championship game that sent the Panthers to their first ever NAIA National Tournament. Ashleigh Blovsky is a true freshman that comes from a very small but successful high school in Brown City. She is a three time All-State, All-Region, AllDistrict, and All-League player with an above average arm and great power from the left side of the plate.
Deb Burton Pitchers and Catchers Returning to the mound this season are two veteran pitchers in senior Karlee Despres and junior Sam Cole. Joining them will be sophomore Arlie DeYoung. Junior Sam Cole returns after a very successful sophomore campaigned that earned her 1st Team All-WHAC honors and saw her pitch her first complete game no-hitter. Cole finished the 2011 season with a 2.28 ERA in 197.2 innings, striking out 160 batters and holding opponents to a .220 batting average. Also buying for much time on mound once she joins the team after basketball season is senior Karlee Despres. Despres appeared in 20 games for DU last season posting a 11-3 record and setting the Davenport’s single game strikeout record with 17 against Siena Heights in the WHAC Tournament. The veteran has been a consistent force defensively and will also be looked upon to provide extra power for DU’s offense. Behind the plate will be sophomore Debra Burton who started 51 of DU’s 53 games behind the dish last season as a true freshman. She boasted a .989 fielding percentage hitting .296 with 40 hits and 29 RBI’s. Competing for time behind the plate with Burton will be freshman utility player Tami Weber, who will also see time at the designated hitter spot throughout the season.

2011 SEASON IN REVIEW Rough California Start – DU headed west for five games in California, including three games with No. 1-ranked California Baptist. The Lady Panthers struggled, dropping all five games for a 0-5 start to the season. DU fell to Simpson University 4-2 to open the season and lost to Southern Oregon 8-2. In their other three games the Lady Panthers fell to Cal Baptist, 8-2, 3-0 and 9-1. First Wins in Florida – In their first game in Florida, DU picked up their first win of the season defeating Webber International 6-4. Florida provided much better results than California as the Lady Panthers went 5-2 during their Florida trip. Undefeated in Ohio – In their short three years, the Lady Panthers are 8-0 in the state of Ohio. This season DU defeated Rio Grande twice, 8-2 and 11-8, then won twice against Shawnee State, 9-0 and 9-2. Sam Cole Throws No-Hitter – Sophomore Sam Cole threw her first career no-hitter in a 7-0 win over host Siena Heights. The hurler from Belleville, Mich. allowed only three baserunners on three walks, while striking out seven in the seven inning game. Cole also posted a perfect game last season against St. Catharine. Win Streak Hits 17 games – The Lady Panthers knocked off Martin Methodist on March 19 and won the next 16 games until the streak was snapped on April 13, a period of 27 days without a loss. The streak included a 12-0 start in WHAC play. Aquinas snapped the streak with a close 1-0 win over the Lady Panthers. Karlee Despres Tosses No-Hitter – Karlee Despres threw a no-hitter, 11 days after Sam Cole’s no-hitter, in a 7-0 win over visiting Concordia. The junior hurler struck out eight batters in seven innings and walked only one batter. Despres was two errors and a walk away from a perfect game. The no-hitter was the fourth of her career. WHAC Champions! – The Lady Panthers clinched their first ever WHAC Championship with a 7-0 victory over UM-Dearborn. DU finished the WHAC regular season 21-3 in the WHAC, four games ahead of second place, Indiana Tech. Getty’s Walk-Off Grand Slam Lifts DU to WHAC Tourney Title – Amber Getty hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh giving the Lady Panthers a 7-4 victory over Madonna in the WHAC Tournament Championship game.
Brusokas Named Player of the Year – Senior shortstop Heather Brusokas was named the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Player of the Year. The Glendale, Calif. native hit .431, drove in 44 runs and led the conference with 13 homeruns. Joining Brusokas on the first team All-WHAC was senior designated player Brianna Carpenter and sophomore pitcher Sam Cole. Named to the honorable mention team were redshirt sophomore Ashlee Olsen and redshirt senior Cirina Jones. Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel was named WHAC Coach of the Year, her fifth career WHAC Coach of the Year award. 2011 RESULTS 02/17/2011 #RV Simpson (Calif.)
