2011-12 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | 7

SEASON PREVIEW The Lady Panthers are coming off the most successful season in school history as they posted a 37-1 overall record with their only defeat coming in the NAIA D2 National Championship game to No. 2 Northwestern (Iowa). Davenport will have to quickly regroup under the direction of new head coach Mike Williams all while replacing two of the all-time greats in small college women’s basketball. Davenport, which averaged 91.1 points per game in 2010-11, will have to overcome the loss of three starters that included NAIA 1st Team All-Americans Kallie Benike and Kristi Boehm as well as Honorable Mention All-American Jeannie Closson. Head coach Mike Williams has a great group of returners that all are looking for their moment to shine.

Karli Harris Seniors The senior class will be relied on heavily to provide leadership and experience to a young Panther lineup. Leading the way is captain and All-WHAC performer Carrie Grubius (Kalamazoo, Mich.). The shooting guard was named 3rd Team All-WHAC last season while averaging 8.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per night. Joining her in their final year at Davenport are guards Abby Neff (LaGrange, Ind.), and Julie Janish (Whittemore, Mich.) as well as forwards Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) and Riana Hensley (Toledo, Ohio). The five have helped the women’s basketball program post a 99-7 overall record since they stepped foot on campus in 2008-09. Juniors The junior class is made up of three returners with one coming at the point guard in Karli Harris (Fishers, Ind.), shooting guard Kayla Gross (New Lothrup, Mich.) and forward Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis.). Harris will most likely step into the starting point guard role after coming off the bench last season 8 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

behind the All-American Boehm. Harris posted 5.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists in only 16 minutes of action each night. Gross will hope to use an off-season of workouts to contribute more to the team while Sevcik will be looked at as a main threat inside and out for 2011-12. Sophomores The smallest class at Davenport features only two student-athletes in Monica Confer (New Lothrup, Mich.) and transfer Alison Bouman (Grandville, Mich.) who comes to Davenport from NCAA D2 Wayne State University. Confer saw limited action as the lone true freshman on the roster last season but posted a 33% (11/33) shooting percentage from behind the arc. Bouman appeared in 25 games for Wayne State in 2010-11 and averaged 3.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per night. Freshman In what may be one of the best incoming classes in DU women’s basketball history, the seven new additions will be looked at to come in right away and add to an already strong lineup that is looking for their sixth consecutive WHAC regular season championship and third straight tournament title. Sara Clancy (Port Austin, Mich.), Abbey Hengesbach (Westphalia, Mich.), Hannah Payne (Clinton, Mich.), Kayleigh VanKeulen (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Kia Frazier (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Linnea Brandholm (Orebro, Sweden) and Alexis Burbul (Oakdale, Mich.) will all look to gain valuable experience on the varsity and or junior varsity squad throughout the 2011-12 campaign.

2010-2011 SEASON IN REVIEW Sweep of NAIA D1 – Davenport followed up their GPAC tour with NAIA D1 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.). Olivet hung tough for a while before the Panthers pulled away 97-69. Then after winning Davenport’s own Panther Invitational, Davenport traveled to Georgetown, Ky. to compete in the Georgetown College – Jim Reid Classic. The Panthers won their first game over NAIA D1 No. 12 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 86-70 and then defeated another NAIA D1 school in Georgetown College (Ky.) 76-68. The Panthers followed that trip up with a sweep of two more NAIA D1 schools in Carroll College (Mont.) and Montana Tech. Davenport finished the season 5-0 against NAIA D1 opponents. No. 1 vs. No. 2 Showdown – Both teams entered the game without a loss, No. 1 Northwestern (Neb.) 13-0 and No. 2 Davenport (15-0). The teams exchanged leads for most of the opening half with five ties and four lead changes in the opening 14 minutes. Davenport used two 7-0 runs to take a 49-38 lead into the half. Northwestern got within 8 but another 7-0 run by Davenport pushed the lead back to 15 and Northwestern would be able to recover. This was the second win over a NAIA D2 No. 1 team in Davenport’s history with the other coming last season against Morningside (Neb.) Perfect Regular Season – Davenport wrapped up a perfect regular season, 30-0 overall and 16-0 in the WHAC, with a win at No. 15 Cornerstone. With Cornerstone leading for a majority of the opening half, the Panthers fast pace started to wear down the Eagles in the second as Davenport rallied. Cornerstone tied the game with a couple minutes remaining but Davenport hit their free throws to preserve a 61-56 win. Davenport joined the 1993-94 Aquinas (10-0) to go unbeaten in conference play. Back-to-Back WHAC Tournament Champions – Going into the WHAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, Davenport cruised to an 87-47 opening round win over Aquinas College. The Panthers got off to a blistering start against Madonna in the Semifinals, taking an early 25-5 advantage on their way to a 91-74 win to advance to their third Championship game in a row. Concordia hung tough in the opening minutes of the Championship game but Davenport was too much for the Cardinals as the Panthers won their second straight WHAC Championship 84-68. One Game Short at National Tourney – After making the Final Four and eventually the National Championship game for the first time in school history, the outcome was short of exciting for the Lady Panthers. Davenport, ranked No. 1 and 37-0 took on No. 2 Northwestern for the second time this season but fell 88-83 to finish as the National Runner-up.

End of Era for DU women’s hoops – The end of the 201011 season meant the end of two of the most decorated careers in small college basketball. Kallie Benike and Kristi Boehm posted a 128-13 record over the past four years and leave the school on top of the record books in many different categories. The two guards helped DU win four straight WHAC championships, two conference tournament titles and a national runner-up finish at the National Tournament.
