2010-2011 D3 SEASON PREVIEW Davenport opens their third season under head coach Chris Green after making their first appearance at the ACHA D-3 National Tournament a year ago. The Panthers finished third in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) in only their first year as a member and ninth in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) in only their second year. Norm Farr
Head Coach Chris Green has 17 returning players and picked up 11 new players during the off season and plans on playing to a higher level since they have last year’s national champions (Saginaw Valley) and runners- up (Hope) in their conference. The Panthers will continue their annual Tennessee trip again this season however this time they will add University of Arkansas and Loyola University (Ma.) which will increase the variety of teams played compared to the previous two seasons. The Panthers will continue their cross town rivalry with Grand Valley as they play them in December in a home and home series. They have strengthened the schedule in 10-11 adding multiple three game weekends, more travel, and playing tougher opponents to gear up against teams they could Mike Soto face when they get another chance at nationals, which will be played in their backyard as Hope is hosting this year’s tournament from March 9-12 in Holland. Returning as captain to this year’s squad is third year player Chad Ouellette, The forward led the team in scoring a year ago with 42 points (24 goals, 18 assists). Joining him as captains are Jake Williams and Sam Waldhart who will serve as the assistant captains. Wil6 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS
liams and Waldhart combined to post 43 points in 2009-2010. Davenport will play a total of 15 home games at Patterson Ice Center in 2010-2011 with many others around the Grand Rapids area at Hope, Grand Valley and Calvin. Most of the home games this year will be broadcast on the Davenport Athletics Network (DAN) and more information can be found by visiting www.dupanthers.com. The Panthers have trimmed the fat and added some muscle to this year’s team as they have been thinking about the start of this year’s season since they left nationals in Fort Meyers last March. The Panthers look forward to their strongest year so far as they have established themselves in the ACHA over the past two seasons and are looking to carry on the Davenport Hockey tradition – bringing home the Championship!
Coach Chris Green

2009-2010 D3 SEASON IN REVIEW Defending Champion Knockout – The Panthers opened their second season in program history on the losing end of three out of their first five games. The trend was turned around quickly however after a big 2-1 overtime victory over the defending ACHA DIII champions Saginaw Valley at Patterson Ice Center. The win sparked a seven game winning streak that lasted almost a month. Traverse City Sweep – Making their first appearance in the Traverse City tournament, the Panthers came away with three consecutive wins over Delta and Northwood to take home the title. The win was part of a stretch in which DU won 13 out of 14 games with their only loss a 2-3 setback to IPFW on the road. First Win over Grand Valley State – One of the biggest highlights of the year came towards the end of that impressive games streak when DU posted their first ever win over rival GVSU 6-4 at home. Regional Triumph – In their second straight appearance in the D3 Regional Tournament, Davenport entered with their sights set on a trip to Florida for nationals. A nail-biting 4-3 win over IPFW in overtime sent the Panthers into the deciding game against Oakland. DU struggled early, but came on when it counted as they downed the Grizzlies to advance to the ACHA D3 National Tournament for the first time in school history. Learning Experience at Nationals – Making their first appearance at the national tournament did not end as the Panthers had hoped but the young team gained valuable experience. Davenport faced a big challenge with their pool draw and posted a 1-2 record with the lone win coming against Dordt College (Iowa) 5-1. Post-Season Honors – Taylor Keyworth and Chad Ouellette were rewarded for their play throughout the season as both were selected to the MCHC AllStar squad as well as the All-Region teams. Keyworth earned second team honors while Ouellette was named to the third team. Keyworth also was selected to the ACHA D3 Select Team that will travel to Europe over Christmas break in 2010-2011.
