COACHING STAFF Head Coach | Wes Cummings (3rd Year) ASSISTANT CoachES | Kevin Tidey, Eric Lawrence, Sam Flamont WES CUMMINGS Cummings begins his third season on the sidelines for Davenport Baseball. He led the Panthers to a very respectable 32-23 record in their inaugural year of 2009 and followed it with a 21-28 performance in 2010. Over the past two seasons, Cummings has coached five 1st Team All-WHAC performers and four Gold Glove Award winners. Wes is no stranger to the West Michigan athletic scene as he came to Davenport from Belding Area Schools where he served as the athletic director. It was his second stint as AD for Belding Area Schools as he also served the same position from 1991-2002. In between his time at Belding, Cummings served as the Athletic Director for Hillsdale Community Schools where he helped the athletic programs along by creating new aspects that were more current to today's athletics. He also coached high school baseball at Cedar Springs High School before coming back to Belding and revived the Red Hawks struggling baseball program. Cummings has held numerous other positions around the area including the Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Comstock Park High School and White Cloud Public Schools. In all, Wes has had 26 years of experience as an Athletic Director, 23 years in coaching (12 of them as a head coach) and 31 years overall in education. Cummings is a 1974 graduate of Central Michigan University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Education. He majored in Physical Education and received a minor in Geography. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.87 on a 4.0 scale. Wes currently lives in Belding, MI with his wife Terri. Together they have four children, Brian, Brent, Paul, Toni and Shelly.
KEVIN TIDEY – Assistant Coach Kevin begins his third year as head assistant coach for the Panthers Baseball Program. He comes to DU from Sparta High School where he helped build the Spartans program into one of the elite baseball powerhouses in the state of Michigan. At Sparta, his teams won four District Titles, one Regional Championship and made one appearance in the Quarterfinals. Tidey compiled a record of 66-11 in his last two seasons with the Spartans as they were ranked in the Top 5 in Division II each season. Kevin's playing experience goes back to Grand Rapids JC and Aquinas College where he received all-conference and all-region honors at JC. Tidey and his wife Sunny reside in Sparta, MI and four kids: Cade and triplets Brock, Jaeger and Presley
Eric Lawrence – Assistant Coach Eric begins his first year as an assistant coach at Davenport University and will work directly with the pitching staff. A graduate of Central Michigan University, Lawrence was also a standout at CMU as well as Grand Rapids CC. As a Chippewa, Eric was a two-year varsity letter winner and was named the MAC Player of the Week on two different occasions. As a Raider at GRCC, Lawrence was an All-American and helped the team to the NJCAA National Championship in 2005. Lawrence served as a Volunteer Assistant Pitching Coach for Central Michigan in 2008-09 and helped out GRCC in the summer of 2010. Eric is currently working on his MBA here at Davenport and resides in Grand Rapids, MI.
Sam Flamont – Assistant Coach Sam Flamont comes to Davenport directly from Central Michigan University where he served as a volunteer assistant for the 2010 MAC Champion Chippewas. Flamont spent the four years prior to CMU as the co-owner and operator of "In The Zone", a baseball and softball training center located in Traverse City, Mich. Sam graduated from Western Michigan, where he earned All-MAC and all-region honors as a senior after hitting .401 with nine home runs and 56 RBI. He headed to WMU after spending two years at Grand Rapids Community College, where he hit .421 as a freshman with seven homers and helping the Raiders to a 28-2 conference record. After his collegiate playing days, Flamont signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers and spent 2002 with the Gulf Coast League Tigers and Lakeland Tigers. He spent the next three seasons in the Frontier League, first with Kalamazoo in 2003 and then with Windy City and Kalamazoo in 2004, before wrapping up his professional career with Joliet of the Northern League in 2005. Flamont hit .323 with seven home runs during the first half of the 2004 season, earning him an All-Star selection at second base in the Frotnier League All-Star Game.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW After a back and forth 2010 season, the Davenport baseball team returns to the field this spring with a sense of optimism. Head coach Wes Cummings returns 18 players from a year ago and welcomes in 15 new faces to the program. The 2011 Panthers are looking at taking that next step forward as they continue to build their program in only its third year. After finishing in a tie for 3rd place in the league a year ago, the Panthers are hoping to use a deeper pitching staff and a more balanced offensive attack to go along with a solid defensive core to move up in the standings. Davenport unfortunately was on the outside looking in at the WHAC tournament due to various tiebreakers after finishing 9-11 during the conference slate and 21-28 overall. The pitching staff will be very deep and balanced for coach Cummings as Tucker Gernhard returns from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss almost all of the 2010 campaign. In his inaugural year for DU in 2009, Tucker led the Panthers with a perfect 6-0 record while striking out 68 batters in 62.1 innings in route to being named 1st team All-WHAC. Seniors Zak Gonzalez, Greg Bartlett and Gordon Powers will hope to make an impact in the rotation as well as the bullpen in 2011. Also returning for DU are juniors Andy Westerburg and Jarrett Luyk who earned honorable mention All-WHAC honors last season. They are joined by newcomers Matt Loomis, a transfer from Central Michigan University and Drew Kennedy who hails from Muskegon CC. Matt’s brother Colton, a freshman from Shepherd HS will also see significant playing time this season. Rounding out the pitching staff is sophomore Cody VanKoevering who posted a strong debut to his college career in 2010.
Andy Westerburg The offense and field positions have some familiar faces and some fresh new additions led by the five infield positions. Derrick Gentile returns for his junior campaign after a breakout sophomore season that was highlighted by a Gold Glove award from the con-

ference. He will again man the third base position and will play opposite of senior Dan Brown who posted seven homeruns in his Davenport debut last season. The middle of the infield will feature returner Travis Laver who also won a Gold Glove in the WHAC last season as well as newcomers Chris VanGessel and Jordan Bigger. The two are junior college transfers and spent time here at Davenport last spring but did not compete during the season. Transfer Drew Kennedy will also see time as a utility infielder and pitcher. The outfield will see four players fill the three spots with Brandon Bongard leading the way in center field. Captain Rob Bolster will again play in left while Matt McNeil will play mostly right field. Junior Brian Spykerman, who has seen action behind the plate and in the outfield during his first two years will rotate through the outfield depending on certain pitching matchups. After graduating Jake Loomans who caught the past two years behind the plate, DU turns to newcomer Mike Allen, a sophomore transfer from Grand Rapids CC. The schedule in 2010 was as tough as Davenport has seen in their short three year history but the coaching staff has kept up with that same mind-set as DU faces a stiff test from some of the best NAIA schools as well as many NCAA foes. Highlighting the non-conference slate is the Panthers trip to Florida where they will face Webber International, Warner University and Southeastern all on the road before taking part in the Russ Matt Challenge at various sites. The Panthers will open up the WHAC slate with a doubleheader against Concordia at home as the conference takes a new approach to the schedule with all four games against each opponent at one site. DU will also host newcomer Northwestern Ohio as well as rival Aquinas College while hitting the road against defending WHAC champion Madonna as well as Indiana Tech and Siena Heights.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEW Golden State Start The Davenport 2010 Baseball season started with a four-game trip to the West Coast where the Panthers would take on #3 California Baptist State University. In the opener, DU got off to a hot start with four quick first-inning runs en route to the 10-6 upset of the #3 Lancers. A Cal. Baptist walk-off HR in the 10th inning would be the difference in the second game and the Lancers carried the momentum into the next two games dropping DU’s record to 1-3.
Gordon Powers Jarrett Luyk College (Ind.) 11-0. The hurler recorded a school record 12 strikeouts and struck out the side twice. Only three base-runners made it to first: two on walks and one via an error. Romero finished the season with a dominating 7-2 record and 3.52 ERA.
A Return to Florida For the second straight year, the DU Baseball team traveled to the Sunshine State for a week-long trip. The Panthers started the week fast with three straight exciting wins before falling in back-to-back games; however, the Panthers would respond with a dominating 11-0 victory and DU finished with a 4-3 record in Florida. Matchup with #2 Team On the season, the Panthers played two of the top three teams in the NAIA. Besides Cal. Baptist, DU traveled to Lebanon, Tenn. for a two-game matchup with #2 Cumberland University. The Panthers did not end up on the winning end of either game, but gained valuable experience for years to come.
Wins Come in Threes The season saw the longest winning streak reach three games on four different occasions. The first streak started in Florida with wins over Warner University, Southeastern University and Webber International followed by a second streak over Western Michigan, Goshen College and conference foe Siena Heights. DU then put streaks on Indiana Tech, Concordia and Calvin College to go along with the last three wins against rival Aquinas. Post-Season Honors Brandon Romero was named 1st Team All-WHAC and the WHAC Pitcher of the Year after recording a 7-2 record on the mound. Joining him on the 1st Team All-WHAC were Matt Collins and Austin Licon, while Jarrett Luyk and Joe Hill earned Honorable Mention All-WHAC honors. James Folske, Travis Laver and Derrick Gentile grabbed Gold Glove Awards and Gentile also received the Champions of Character Award.
DU Wins Over NCAA D1 WMU The Panthers notched their first win in program history over a NCAA D1 program as they took down the Western Michigan Broncos 6-5. In the game, DU fell behind early, but scored four straight runs to build a 6-3 lead and the Panthers held on for an incredible 6-5 road win over the D1 program. Brandon Romero Throws No-Hitter Brandon Romero, a senior pitcher, threw Davenport's first ever no-hitter as the Panthers topped Goshen
