CHRIS GREEN Chris enters his fourth season leading the ACHA Division III team here at Davenport University. Green steps into the coaching role after a very successful playing career at Davenport. In 2007-2008, Green helped DU to its first ever ACHA DII National Championship and was part of a team that made four straight appearances in the National Tournament including three straight Final Four’s. During his three years on the Davenport bench, Green has led the Panthers to back to back appearances at the ACHA Division III national tournament and claimed the program’s first ever MCHC Tournament title in 2010-11. Green also brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Panthers as this will be his eighth year of coaching hockey. Most recently, Chris has spent time working with the youth teams headlined by GRAHA. He also has spent time coaching Peewee AAA hockey as well helping with Caledonia/Lowell’s high school team. Chris lives in Grand Rapids, MI.
SCOTT KNIGHT Scott begins his second year as the goalie coach for the Division III hockey team after completing his playing career at Davenport in 2010. Knight helped lead the Panthers to their third straight ACHA Division II National Championship during his final season and was a member of all three teams to bring home the top prize. Knight also has good experience on the sidelines as he has been a Bandits Goalie School instructor since 2006 and has served as an assistant coach for the Forest Hills Central JV squad as well as the Grandville HS varsity team.

2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW Davenport University ACHA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Team has a bittersweet taste in their mouth from last year’s early exit from the national tournament. Head coach Chris Green and his staff look to start the well anticipated 2011-2012 season by shifting their tactics from a heavily offensive minded team to a steady defense first mentality. The coaching staff worked extremely hard after last season to find out what the nucleus of the team needed in order to progress successfully while staying consistent throughout the season and deep into Nationals. Goaltending Coach Green’s dedicated focus this season is to build a structurally sound foundation from the goalie out. With standout netminder John Cruse (Shelby Twp., Mich.) coming off a solid season, the team expects a lot from their starting goalie in only his second year with the Panthers. This season, Coach Green brings in one of his most prized recruits in Andrew Habasevich (Oldsmar, Fla.). His size, speed and eagerness to compete for the starting position has quickly proven to many that he’s the future of this program and will help Davenport stay competitive between the pipes over the next five years. Cam Thomas (Kentwood, Mich.) and Tim Davis (Grand Rapids, Mich.) are both talented and experienced goaltenders that bring a great blend of experience and dedication to the team. Defense The defensive unit will be led by the newly appointed Assistant Captain Aaron Warsen (Kentwood, Mich.) and two pivotal sophomore leaders in John Brooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.), and Garret Garber (Cadillac, Mich.). With the departure of former Assistant Coach Rick Gadwa, the defensive core will have something to prove this season. The newly hired defensive coach for the Panthers is former Division II Captain and two-time National Champion Jeremy Bultema. Offense The offense, which will drive this well oiled machine, will have a great core of returning players such as Zack Feher (Livonia, Mich.), Ben Duthler (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Sam Waldhart (Walker, Mich.), Bryon Guerin (Jackson, Mich.), Mike Soto (Muskegon, Mich.), and Garrett Russell (Midland, Mich.). The coaching staff expects to see great chemistry and leadership with these individu-
als and each line will be packed with a powerful punch. Fourth year player Chad Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) returns as Captain this season. Coach Green will look to Chad’s leadership on and off the ice to maneuver this team through the long grueling season and expects big things. This season will be a first for two new players from outside the country and they hail from Montreal, Canada. Second year player Tommy Barabe is joined by 6’8 freshman Cody Mathieu who will create a presence on the blue line while Leo Donovan will fill in nicely as a crafty second line center.
Chad Ouellette The other new players to this year’s line-up are Zachary Bodziak (Hartland, Mich.), Daniel Hume (Springboro, Ohio), Drake Chittenden (Lowell, Mich.), Evan Conn (Seattle, Wa.), and Tyler Bitterman (Lowell, Mich.). The coaching staff is expecting these young freshmen to get acclimated quickly while giving their best each day while creating a higher level of competition for those around them. The team’s core is a tight knit group of players that don’t allow any distractions to get in their way of success. Coach Green has put together another tough schedule in 2011-12 as they hope it ends with a third straight trip to the ACHA D3 national tournament. DU will again play in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) and will look to defend their tournament crown won last season and hopefully contend for a regular season championship as well. Davenport hosts 16 contests throughout the year culminating in a home and home with rivals Hope College and Michigan State in early February.

2010-2011 Season in review High Optimism Starting Season – After qualifying for their first ever ACHA D3 National Tournament, Davenport returned 18 guys from the season before in hopes of taking the next step for a program that is in only its third year. Head coach Chris Green surrounded himself with a new goalie coach in Scott Knight and new offensive coach in Rick Gadwa. 4-0 Start out of the Gates – Davenport opened the season in late September with a big win over Adrian (9-6) and followed it up with convincing wins over Delta and a pair of victories against Detroit Mercy. After a tough setback to Saginaw, DU got a win over Muskegon CC before heading to the prestigious Tennessee Tourney. Another Long Winning Streak – DU suffered a 1-2 weekend in Knoxville but recovered quickly to post six straight wins after leaving the Volunteer state. Included in the streak were conference wins over Northwood, Lansing CC and Oakland. Pink Game v. Calvin – For the second straight year, the Panthers got together with a local team to help raise funds for Breast Cancer. Davenport took on rival Calvin in a home and home series, where each team won on their opponent’s ice, but it was the pink game that brought out most fans for the annual event. Split with Defending National Champions – Davenport entered their conference matchups with the two-time defending national champion Saginaw Valley State on a two game skid and although they dropped the home game, the Panthers recovered for a 4-3 win on the road. The win vaulted DU to seven straight wins which included a second victory over the Cardinals before heading to Connecticut to take on national powers Farmingdale and Southern Connecticut. East Coast Trip – Davenport made their furthest trip of the short three year history shortly after returning from Christmas break. Although they dropped both games against Farmingdale and Southern Conn., the Panthers gained valuable experience for the remainder of the season against top competition. Regional and MCHC Tournament Triumphs – Davenport entered the regional tournament on a two game skid after losing back to back games vs. Hope, but the team found its groove and captured a National Tournament berth by defeating UM-Flint and Adrian. Davenport followed it up with three straight wins in the MCHC Tourney to claim their first ever conference championship. DU defeated GVSU, Hope and Saginaw Valley for the tourney title. 16 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS
National Tournament Tie Breaker – After going 2-1 in their second ever appearance at the national tourney, the Panthers were on the down-side of a three way tie-breaker which disallowed them to advance to the Semifinal round. The finish though was the best in school history after Davenport defeated Cal University in OT and McKendree in Pool Play. 2010-2011 RESULTS Date
