COACHING STAFF Head Coach | Ronda Varnesdeel (3rd Year) Ronda Varnesdeel Ronda Varnesdeel begins her third season at the helm of the softball program at Davenport. In 2009, the first season for the Panthers, Varnesdeel guided DU to a 31-23 overall record and they followed with a 46-16 mark in 2010. Her 46 victories in 2010 is the most ever in Varnesdeel’s coaching career, with her garnering 37 twice before while at Aquinas College. Varnesdeel led her team to a 21-7 conference record last year and a 2nd place finish in the WHAC while also recording her 200th career victory on Feb. 22nd against Concordia College (Minn.). Before starting the Panther program in 2009, Ronda spent six years at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI in which she was at the helm of the program for five of those years. While at Aquinas, Varnesdeel established the program as a small college softball powerhouse. She led them to four Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Championships in 2003 and 2005-2007. She was named WHAC Coach of the Year in each of those years as well as Region VIII Coach of the Year in 2005, a year in which she led her team to the NAIA National Tournament. Varnesdeel was also a stand-out athlete for the Saints in which she was a four-year starter for the basketball and softball programs and led the Saints to a national championship appearance in both sports. Varnesdeel also earned all-conference and all-region selections during her softball career. In her two years of coaching at DU, Ronda has had one 2nd Team All-American, seven All-Conference Selections, three All-Conference Honorable Mention Selections, six NAIA Scholar Athletes, and was honored as a NAIA Scholar Team with a cumulative team GPA of 3.3 in 2010. Varnesdeel, who received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Aquinas College, resides in Grand Rapids, MI with her husband Bernard Jr. and her 5 year old son Bernard III. Varnesdeel also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for the Panthers.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW The Lady Panthers will enter their third season of competition with high hopes after a record setting, 46-16, 2010 season. Head Coach Ronda Varnesdeel and her staff welcome back twelve players from their 2010 roster along with four new faces from the junior college and high school ranks. The 2011 Panthers will be looking to improve on their second place WHAC finish last year and continue to put Davenport softball on the map in only their third year of existence. Pitchers & Catchers The Panthers return their entire pitching staff from a year ago that had a combined ERA of 2.12. Sophomore captain Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) will look to improve on a impressive freshman showing in which she threw the first perfect game in DU history, was

named First Team All-WHAC, earned WHAC Pitcher of the Week honors twice, and finished with a team high 22 wins and 1.89 ERA. Senior Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) and junior Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) will round out the Panther pitching rotation for the Panthers. Carpenter appeared in 28 games for DU last year and finished with an overall record of 13-3, while Despres, who missed the first twenty games of the season due to basketball, came on strong in conference play with a team leading nine WHAC victories. The pitching staff will be dealing with a whole new set of catchers behind the plate due to graduation last year. Freshman Debra Burton (Cassopolis, Mich.) and sophomore Chelsey Dow (Lake Odessa, Mich.) will be pegged to fill the void from last year. Infielders After scoring an average of 6.5 runs and belting 1.01 homeruns per game in 2010, the Panther offense will continue to bring power and consistency from a veteran team. 1st Team All-WHAC shortstop Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) will lead the charge after hitting .405 with 77 hits, 14 homeruns and a .737 slugging percentage. Joining her in the infield will be transfer third baseman Liz Veltman (Grand Rapids, Mich.), ju-

nior second baseman Morgan Greenfield (Wyoming, Mich.), and senior captain first baseman Cirina Jones (Middleton, Mich.). 2011 will be the only year for Jones in a Panther uniform after having to red-shirt last year due to injury. The Panther infield will also be given much needed depth from Dow, Carpenter, and freshman Lindsey Allen (Midland, Mich.). Outfielders The outfield will have much more experience than it has had in the previous years for DU softball. Senior Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) will take the reins in centerfield with junior Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) and sophomore Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) assisting her in the grass. New additions to the outfield will include previous infielders Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.) and Molly Ketelaar (Allegan, Mich.), along with freshman Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.). The Schedule The Panther coaching staff has put together a grueling non-conference schedule including facing off against pre-season NAIA #1 California Baptist in their Ringor So Cal Smash Tournament in Riverside, CA. With six games in California, DU will then head to Florida and face Warner University and Webber International on their home fields before finishing in the sunshine state with three games at the NTC Spring Games.
Bri Carpenter DU will also travel to Tennessee for the Union University Tournament and then south again to Kentucky to participate in the Campbellsville/Lindsey Wilson Classic. The Panthers will then play four games in Ohio before heading back to Michigan to face NCAA DII Ferris State University. DU’s non-conference schedule will see them face eight teams that are currently ranked or receiving votes in the pre-season NAIA Top-25 poll and four teams that reached the national tournament last year. Conference play will kick off the first weekend in April with key match-ups falling against defending WHAC Champion Madonna, April 2nd on the road and then home on April 15th.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEW Strong Start in Sunshine State The Lady Panthers’ season got off to a dominating start in Florida, winning six straight games and defensively posting four shutouts. During their trip to Florida, DU finished with a 9-2 record to start the season. Coach Varnesdeel Earns 200th Career Victory In the Lady Panthers’ first game of the 2010 season, Coach Varnesdeel earned her 200th career victory in an 8-0 DU win over Concordia College (Minn.). Prior to her two years at Davenport, Varnesdeel led Aquinas College for six seasons. Freshman Throws First Perfect Game Freshman hurler Sam Cole threw the first perfect game in Davenport history in a 10-0 victory over St. Catharine (Ky.). Cole tossed six strikeouts in the game, and would finish the 2010 season 22-9 with a 1.89 ERA. Eight in a Row For the second straight year, the Lady Panthers won seven straight games to end the regular season and increased the streak to eight wins in the WHAC Tournament. The eight game win streak was part of a school record 46-win season and a second place finish in the WHAC and conference tournament. First Grand Slam In Softball History Senior Haley Stehouwer knocked out the first grand slam homerun in Lady Panther softball history. For the game, DU would tally four homeruns as the Lady Panthers cruised to an 11-3 domination of # 21 Madonna. Seniors Kristin Miedema and Kristina Krum along with Karlee Despres would all record grand slams in the season following Stehouwer. Despres Throws No-Hitter and Hits Grand Slam in Same Day On senior day, sophomore Karlee Despres stole the show, as she notched her third career no-hitter and followed it up with a grand slam homerun in a twogame sweep over Siena Heights. On the day, DU posted identical 5-0 victories against the Saints.
