ASSISTANT Coach | Amber Bloem Alma Mater: Grand Valley State University Chris Allen Chris is entering his third season at the helm of the women’s soccer program. Since taking over in 2009, Coach Allen has helped transform the Lady Panthers into a well respected program that has high aspirations for the future. In back to back years, Allen has helped the Panthers to two record breaking third place finishes in the WHAC. In 2009 and 2010, Allen’s teams have broken the previous year’s record for wins in a season as well as other significant records. Throughout his career Chris has coached at high levels specifically with Halifax Town Football Club and Vardar West Soccer Club. While coaching for Vardar West, Chris guided his team to three straight Michigan State Cup Championship games, winning the prestigious honor in 2008 and 2009, granting them two births to the Region 2 National Championship series. Chris also won the Midwest Regional League D1 Championship in 2008. In the summer of 2010 he guided Chicago Fire Juniors - Michigan to the Super Y National Championships in Tampa, FL. Chris spent time in the summer of 2010 learning from Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen, who has coached stars such as Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez. Chris currently holds both FA Level 2 and USSF D coaching licenses. Allen is no stranger when it comes to Davenport Athletics as he played a stellar four-year career for the Panthers men’s team in which he helped DU become one of the elite forces in not only the WHAC but also the Region. While sporting a red and black uniform, Chris helped the Panthers to an overall record of 36-26-4 while claiming the 2005 WHAC Tournament Championship and reaching the Regional Championship that same year. Chris currently resides in Kentwood, MI while the rest of his family lives in Huddersfield, England.

MELISSA TROMBLEY Melissa begins her third year as one of two assistant coaches under Chris Allen. 2011 SEASON PREVIEW The Lady Panthers and Head Coach Chris Allen are eager to start another season after finishing a school best 9-4-4 last year. In just his third year at the helm of the program, Allen returns 11 players while bringing in 11 newcomers who hail from various areas of Michigan along with his native country of England. This year’s team contains just one senior and also will include previous All-WHAC selections Catherine Howard and Karitas Elvarsdottir who sat out all last year due to injuries. Thelma Gylfadottir

Goalkeeping Catherine Howard (Lowell, Mich.), who missed last season due to injury, will once again take over the reins for the Panthers in net. In 2009 she started all 17 games and recorded eight wins in net with six of those being shutouts. “Having Cat back is very uplifting and a massive boost for our defense along with an additional leader on the field,” states Allen. Rounding out goalkeepers for DU will be freshman Lexi Kruse (Otsego, Mich.) whose athleticism will bring depth in the net for the Panthers. Defense The defensive side of the field returns the most players of any position to the 2011 roster. Ashley Roth (Wyoming, Mich.), Rickilyn Brummell (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Kirsten Hass (Flint, Mich.), and Laken DucharClark (England) will look to build on the 2010 season in which they only allowed 13 goals in 17 games. Lindsey Klein (Cedar Springs, Mich.) and Mackenzie Maat (Holland, Mich.) and will be the lone newcomers to the back field. Midfielders DU will return four midfielders this season including lone senior Britteny Willis (Hudsonville, Mich.). Karitas Elvarsdottir (Akranes, Iceland) will return after missing last season due to an ACL injury and joining her will be Thelma Gylfadottir (Akranes, Iceland) who received 1st Team All-WHAC honors as a freshman. Alyssa Malone (Hudsonville, Mich.) gives more depth and experience to the Panthers as she continues to improve and disturb defenders on the field. Newcomers to the position will be freshman Mari Vander-

Jagt (Coopersville, Mich.), Stephanie Hofman (Byron Center, Mich.) and England national champion Natalie McHale (Doncaster, England). Forwards Lizzi Paul (England) returns to the DU lineup after leading all scorers with 14 goals and two assists last season. Kasey Eberlein (Hudsonville, Mich.) will begin her third year in a Panther uniform and will be joined by a sea of young talent. Paige Eli (Huddersfield, England) will join the Panther squad after being part of the U19 England International team and she will be joined in the states by Leeds, England native Letesha Cannonier. Tam Grzybowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Abbie Prince (Zeeland, Mich.) and Mackenzie VanDerWarf (Lowell, Mich.) will also be keys to providing a powerful offensive attack in 2011. Coach Allen states: “We are very excited for the upcoming season with the addition of all our newcomers combined with the experience of our returners. Our focus, passion, and commitment to playing to our potential is at a point that we are extremely happy and excited about. Leadership will play a key role in our success this season and we will lean on our three returning captains to provide that for us.” Schedule The Panthers will open up play on August 16th and 17th in North Carolina against Warren Wilson and Montreat College with their home opener coming two weeks later against a very tough Trinity Christian College team. This year’s schedule includes eight home games for DU with one of their longest road trips being to Jackson, Tennessee for a two day Union University tournament. DU will face off against eighteen opponents and compete in six states along the way. Allen has set up a very competitive non-conference schedule to prepare for the start of conference season on October 1st when they host Madonna University.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEW

Karitas Elvarsdottir

Best Start in Program History – In their fifth season as a program, third year head coach Chris Allen led his team to not only their first ever victory in a season opener but also collected wins against Cardinal Stritch University, Malone University and Holy Cross. With a tie against the University of Saint Francis, DU started the season a program best 3-0-1. Lizzie Paul’s Record Day – On September 11th, Lizzie Paul put her name on the DU record books after recording nine goals and tailing two assists in a 16-0 victory over Holy Cross. Paul received WHAC and NAIA Player of the Week honors for her efforts. Overtime Foes – Davenport entered into extra play on four different occasions during the season. The Panthers were unable to record a win in any of the extra sessions finishing with ties against Illinois Tech, Madonna and Cornerstone while dropping the game against Siena Heights. Home Field Advantage – The Panthers hosted seven home games on the year recording a 6-1 record with their only loss coming in overtime against WHAC foe Siena Heights. In those seven games DU recorded 28 goals and posted four shut-outs on their home turf. Senior Day – On October 30, DU hosted their final regular season home game against cross-town rivals Aquinas College. Alyssa Malone and Daniella Bugli both recorded goals in the 2-1 victory in which seniors Bugli, Megan Powers, Ashley Phillips, Jordan Sinclair and Ashley DeRuiter were recognized for their efforts over the last four years. Semifinal Loss to Siena Heights – For the second straight year DU advanced to the conference tournament picking up a home quarterfinal victory over Indiana Tech. Davenport would then face off against the only team that beat them in conference play, Siena Heights, and would come up short on the road 1-2. The Panthers would end their season with a program best 9-4-4 record.
