t was a very sad start to this year’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic with the death of our past Captain Ashok Bakshi who was warming up on the driving range for the afternoon Pro-Am when he suffered a cardiac arrest. The Chief Medical Officer for the European Tour attended to him immediately and shortly afterwards he was taken to hospital by helicopter but sadly, he did not survive.

I have very fond memories of Ashok…I will never forget his mischievous smile, his constant banter, his funny anecdotes and, during Desert Classic week he was one of the real characters who would always be in the Gulf News hospitality chalet; he represented Gulf News in the Pro-Ams for many years, this year being no exception. It was strange being in the chalet this year and not seeing him. We had many a chat and, of course, there was always a story, one of my favourite being the one he told me of when, in 2006, he teamed up with Tony Johnston, Madhu Sharma and Michael Connor and won the Dubai Desert Classic Pro-Am; they received a refrigerator each as a prize! When he told Shashi, his wife, what he had won she told him not to bring it home to which he replied, “I am bringing it home and I will sleep with it in the bed if required!”

Our sincere condolences to Ashok’s family, to his wife Shashi, his son Manish, daughter-in-law Sonia, daughter Meghna, son-in-law Rahul and his four grandchildren. A number of past Captains (as well as the current Captains) attended the condolence meeting wearing their Captains’ jackets to represent the Club. It was indeed a sad week. Another year, another Desert Classic and once again we were treated to a fantastic four days of superb golf with a great field of players. Congratulations to the 2015 champion Rory McIlroy who played so well to clinch the title and to win for the second time here.

Congratulations to ‘golf in DUBAi’ for organising another successful event and to Emirates Golf Club - great members’ chalet on the 16th green and what a pleasure it was to be able to have that bird’s eye view of the 16th hole and to be able to watch the action up close and in comfort. There was excellent viewing out on the course too - where else in the world would one be able to see so many top players without standing ten deep and craning to see any action. Craig Haldane and his team at Golf Course Maintenance received so many accolades from the players and officials for the immaculate condition of the course. It looked stunning, so well done to everyone at GCM. Welcome back to all past members who visited for the Desert Classic….. Chef Francois, Stacey Walton, Paul Thornberry, Bob and Angela Connor, Barbara Fotheringham and anyone else I missed.

Thank you to all EGC staff who always work tirelessly through Desert Classic week, putting in long hours each day, especially on the final day and evening and all the while, it’s service with a smile. Well done to each and every one of you and thank you. Now it’s back to our own Club events and a time when we have our ‘majors’ on the calendar with the Men’s and Ladies’ Amateur Opens as well as the Men’s and Ladies’ Club Championships. Good luck to all participants for these events. On the social side of things, the next big date for us is Valentine’s Day so for all you romantics out there, it’s time to book something for that special evening…is there any better place than Le Classique? Congratulations to our Omega Dubai Desert Classic Champion Rory McIroy who is a second time winner of this event. What a great tournament...it was so enjoyable and we are all so proud of having this fantastic tournament at our home Club. Our magnificent Majlis course looked unbelievable. I cannot wait to play it but somehow I don’t think it will be as easy to get out of the rough as the pros made it look. I think we might be seeing some higher scores than usual in our own Club tournaments. Thank you to our friends at Omega for being the main sponsor of the Dubai Desert Classic and for their wonderful hospitality. Congratulations to ‘golf in Dubai’ for organising the event which was another resounding success for them. When I first started played golf, I knew nothing about the game at all, nor the terminologies. I was

at my first Desert Classic, not so interested in it but I did know of some of the more well-known players at that time. The final day’s play came and someone told me that Seve Ballesteros was in a sudden death (play off). I couldn’t believe it, I was so shocked, I started ringing my friends to tell them, “ You won’t believe this but Seve Ballesteros is dead.” I was so upset...and then one of my friends kindly explained to me what a sudden death play off actually was!! Mmm...I think I have learned a lot since then!

y sincere condolences go to the family of our past Captain, Ashok Bakshi who sadly passed away last week. He was a real gentleman in every sense of the word and he will be missed by so many of his friends.

Past Captain and friend, Paul Thornberry, was also here during Classic week and being with him was as if no time had passed at all since he left five years ago. Isn’t that just what this place is all about? So many of us have fantastic friends who we have met in Dubai at our Club and these are rock solid friendships.

Mashreq Medal Championship 2015 Gets Underway

s the New Year got underway, competitors took to the fairways of the Majlis course to try and gain an early advantage in the season opener of the Mashreq Medal Championship. This year’s event will continue to be in association with BMW and Ruth’s Chris Steak House. In A Division (handicap 0-10) Tony Azoulay claimed third place for his efforts in signing for a net 72. Also with a net 72 with six pars and a birdie over the final nine holes was good enough for Humayun Shahryar to secure the runners-up place on a card count-back. The winner of A Division was Salem Dasmal who scored a one under par 71, Having started on hole 10, he birdied the 14th and 18th holes to set up a winning round. Azoulay also took the honours for the lowest gross of the day for his 75 which included

birdies at the 2nd, 10th and the 15th. B Division (handicap 1120) was closely contested and in third place with a net 70 was Sammy Eldin. Also with a net 70, but again a better back nine, was Ishu Rupani who posted his score early on in the 7.30am shotgun. The winner, claiming back

to back medal wins, was Imran Qayyum who signed for the only sub-seventy round of the day with a net 69. In C Division (handicap 21-28) Suresh Shewakramani secured first place with a net 80. Congratulations to all of the above who will now enjoy an evening of fine dining, courtesy of Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

The Gold Cup itself was a clean sweep for Dubai Creek members claiming the top three places. In third place with a net 72 after a card count back was Ishwar Jodha. A further shot ahead of the pack was Praveen Kalia with a one under par net 71. Ashok Ahuja was crowned the winner of the Mashreq Gold Cup Grand Final with a fantastic score of a net 67. Thank you to Mr. Farhad Irani, Executive Vice president and Head of Retail Banking Group for Mashreq for attending and presenting the winners’ prizes.

he Mashreq Gold Cup Grand Final was contested by members from both Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club. The top 36 players from each respective Order of Merit were invited to the Mashreq Gold Cup Grand Final in association with BMW to be played over the Majlis course. Each club staged eleven events throughout 2014 and points were allocated accordingly, based on performance, with the aim to find the most consistent golfer over the season. Claiming these honours were Ashok Sindhu from Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club and Jignesh Sangani from Emirates Golf Club. Congratulations to both on a fantastic achievement.

Turlik Trio Take the Titleist New Year’s Day Scramble

mirates Golf Club celebrated the opening day of 2015 with the annual New Year’s Day Scramble with eighty competitors taking part in this fun event over the Faldo Course.

The family trio of Chris, Alex and Rosemary Turlik played some great golf on their way to a fantastic score of 57.1 recording 11 birdies and no dropped shots on their way to victory. Runners-up were the team of elite juniors represented by Zubin Chandra, Rayhan Thomas, Bradley Mogire and Vaughn Reed. They also had a bogey free round with 11 birdies and an eagle on hole 13. The youngsters posted a gross 59 but due to their low handicaps only deducted 0.7 strokes to sign for a net 58.3. The team of Naresh Bhambhaney, Komal Sharma, Sameer Joshi and Bhupesh Sharma also played a fantastic game enjoying seven birdies to post a net 60.1 to claim third place. With thanks to the support of Titleist there were four on-course prizes for nearest the pins. Winning a Titleist glove and a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 balls in the men’s event were Rayhan Thomas on the 2nd hole and Achal Gai on the 12th hole. Winning the same for the ladies were Fran Cole on the 12th hole and Katerine Lemay on the 17th hole. To conclude the New Year’s Day prize-giving, the members’ Christmas and New Year’s raffle took place. One hundred tickets went up for sale for the chance to win a set of Ping i25 irons and a Ping cart bag. The winning ticket was drawn by Lady Captain Mitsuko Emmerson and the fantastic prize was won by Vera Woolnough.

did bake an apple pie myself last month and it wasn’t bad… actually it was good! I have also been thinking of starting Karate which is very good for the brain and helps to make us focus. In our lives there are many choices every year, every month, every day, every hour and we have three choices - to do or not to do, or just to think about it. I prefer “to do”. If I make a mistake I will learn from it, but if I choose not to do or just think about it I will never learn. Last month on 20th January we had a first-time event which was a New Year’s Ladies’ Dinner in Le Classique. The company was good, the food was excellent and all the ladies looked

so beautiful and were dancing, laughing and enjoying their time together. It was a great evening. Many thanks to the ladies who participated and those who planned the evening and made it happen.

t’s 2015 and the year of the sheep which somehow seems special to me. If you still haven’t made a New Year’s resolution, it may still not be too late. We can try to do the things we wanted to do last year or something completely different. Time is moving on and the world is moving and doesn’t stop. We don’t have time to think too long. If you are thinking of starting to play golf you can start now; if you would like to make some new friends you can speak to them anytime; if you would like to bake an apple pie and you never did it before why not try it today? Caley Aces Her Way to Victory

he ladies took to the fairways of the Majlis course in good spirit after the festive break, competing in the January Medal supported by JW Marriot Marquis, Dubai. The headlines belonged to Viv Caley who had a Hole-in-One with her very first stroke of the day at the 140 yard fourth hole. This form continued as she went on to win Silver A Division (handicap 0-14) by five strokes signing for a superb net 67. Monica Palao was runner-up with a score of net 72. In the Bronze Division (handicap 24-42) Ninu Smith claimed first place by signing for a net 76. Runner-up in the Silver B Division (handicap 15-23) was Martha Wong with a net 72. The winner was young Natali Gupta with a two under par net 70. The lowest gross of the day outside of any of the above winners was won by Mimi Hosking who scored a gross 80. The monthly raffle was drawn by Lady Captain Mitsuko Emerson, and the lucky winner was Maria Petre. The above ladies will now enjoy some fine cuisine and treats at the JW Marriot Marquis, Dubai.

Silver Division (handicap 0-23) was played from the red tees and the winner, with a consistent round of 36 points, was Rekha Bandopadhyay. Runner-up was Janine Dols with 34 points and a better back six over Natali Gupta who also scored 34 points to finish in third place. The winner of Bronze Division (handicap 24-42) with 37 points and the best score of the day was Christine Hutchinson.

shok started playing golf in 1964 when he joined the Kolkata Club in India, his motivation for joining being that the club was exclusive, inexpensive and access to it was only by boat across the River Hooghly; not only that, but the drinks were more than reasonably priced. In 1969, Ashok moved to Delhi with Cadbury India Limited and he continued to play golf as a member of the Air Force Golf Club, Army Golf Cub and subsequently the Delhi Golf Club He joined Jumbo Electronics in Dubai in 1981 and Dubai became home for him and his family with his children Ashok joined Emirates Golf Club when it first opened and was very proud to have been Club Captain of our great Club 2001–2002 Dubai Country Club was the most sought after club for golfers in those days and it was to be Ashok’s first sight of a sand course. Transferring to Abu Dhabi though, he became member of his first sand golf course, there and learned the method of playing on sand carrying his own clubs – unheard of where he had played earlier. The caddies in his home club thought that one could not play golf without them – it was like playing without a set of clubs From Abu Dhabi, Ashok was transferred to Oman in 1983 where he joined Gallah

Wentworth Club and two years later was transferred to London…and the luxury of grass courses until coming back to Dubai in 1988 to Sharjah Wanderers Club. As Vice President of Business Development for Jumbo, Ashok had the opportunity of visiting almost 40 countries, and playing golf wherever he got an opportunity. In 1989 life in Dubai changed with membership of Emirates Golf Club – the Club gave him great enjoyment, great friends and a golfing business. Through Ashok’s suggestion, Jumbo Electronics became the sponsor of the Dubai Amateur Open at EGC and also the Desert Classic Pro-Am and remained so for many years. Ashok was involved with the popular Indian Invitational Event at EGC with Surender Kandhari, Suresh Subberwal, Russi Patel, Rajkumar, Rekha Bandopadhyay, and many others for 21 years of its current 25 years standing. This tournament is for members of Emirates Golf Club and it is dedicated to raising funds for the junior staff Ashok enjoyed every minute with his grandson Aayush, taking him to play and practice golf whenever possible - it became a highlight of his week to spend that special time with his grandson.

Bob Wilkinson former Dubai Desert Classic Tournament Director: So sad to hear about the sudden death yesterday of Mr Ashok Bakshi. My memories of him go back to the very start of the Dubai Desert Classic when his company agreed to help us out by supplying TVs and A/Cs for the hospitality units. As I recall he believed very much in Dubai and the direction it was heading. He stuck with us for years (maybe was still doing so?) and he was always very enthusiastic about seeing the tournament and Dubai go from strength to strength. I am sure he was just as enthusiastic about Emirates Golf Club and when I met him at the 25th Anniversary last year he told me how much he enjoyed being involved and how proud he was to have been the Club’s Captain. He always loved to joke and we sat and remembered the old days, the things that went wrong and the things that went right. I am proud to have known him. Past Lady Captain Lynne Hood:

avita Sehmi was a member of the Elite Squad at EGC until last September and is now studying and playing team golf at the University of Maryland, USA. Coming towards the end of an amazing Christmas break with the family, the time has come for me to head back to the States and resume the 2014-2015 golfing season. So far, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been nearly five months since I started playing golf for Maryland and I can easily say that it has been one of the most memorable moments in my golfing career! Being a Freshman (first year), I qualified to play all five events of which I played number two or three for the team which I was really excited about. In addition, my team made it so easy for me to fit in at the University of Maryland and they helped me ease into the copious practice and workout schedules! I have gained plenty of experience and so far, playing at this level, I have learned so many things. I can easily say the most important thing I have learned is being ready to play at all times regardless of how you are hitting the ball...if you are hooking the ball, adjust and be ready to play...if you are slicing the ball, adjust and be ready to play! I struggled towards the end of the first season as I was playing so much golf but I was not keeping an eye on my swing so I started drifting back into old habits that myself and my coach, Stephen Deane, worked so hard to change! However, now I have experienced the lows of playing golf at such a high level so I know how to handle myself better. Going back into the season, I can easily say that there are things I will do better and there are goals I hope to achieve, with the help of the coaches and the team, I have matured as a person as well as a golfer! Apart from that, I miss the sunny weather in Dubai and I look forward to it again in the summer time! Have a great season everyone!!

Master Cooper extends his lead at the top of the order of merit with a solid score of 30 17th January 2015 Emirates Golf Academy Par 3 course played host to the latest round of the Dubai Golf Junior series. Perfect weather conditions were enjoyed by the competitors and all involved. The outstanding score of the day was returned by Dubai Creek member Sean Cooper. Master Cooper carded a three over par round off the back tee with four bogeys and one birdie. His round was made all the more special as Sean also won the nearest the pin prize on the tough 9th hole. The other nearest the pin prize went to Pragun Khanna. write this as we have just completed the ODDC event. What a great week it has been for the Club, our members and guests and for Dubai. The feedback has been fantastic, but I really want to take this opportunity to thank my entire team in GCM, who have all done something seriously special. I honestly can’t put into words how hard they all worked with some immense challenges in front of them, one of them being related to one of our organisation’s core values, Innovation! To say we pushed the boundaries this year is an understatement. Over the years of hosting events, you learn! You learn what went well, what didn’t. You learn to listen to constructive criticism and act wisely. You learn to ignore certain comments and to not let them phase you. You learn from your mistakes and you learn how to fix them very quickly. You learn what teamwork is all about and how motivation can positively influence individuals within your team. You learn that if you give individuals the opportunity to grow, they will surprise you every day and finally you learn how important it is to have great people around you, be it colleagues, friends and of course your family. At Emirates Golf Club we have 64 full time colleagues maintaining our property on a daily basis, obviously not always on site at once due to either having a day off, or being on deserved leave. So that number is usually closer to 45 or 50 a day. For the week of the tournament we had all our colleagues working on one golf course and event that was not enough to achieve certain tasks. We therefore needed to bring in additional colleagues from the Creek Golf and Yacht Club and were further supported by colleagues from Al Badia and The Els Club as well as relying on our outsourced provider, Desert Turfcare, for equipment maintenance as well as additional colleagues from our service providers Al Fajer. We were fortunate enough therefore to have a team of 97 working on the Majlis for the build up to and week of the tournament. With the help of the European Tour Agronomy Section supported by Graeme MacNiven for the past seven years, we are

able to really create a great history. We have a fresh set of eyes on the property and together we can make some very informed decisions as to how we as a team, can improve or enhance on things in previous years. This year, we put less seed down during the overseeding process than ever before on fairways. We did so as we felt that over the years the course has played too soft and by addressing the seeding rates, we may be able to have a better blend of Rye and Bermuda whilst not losing the visual impact. The decision to stop overseeding greens back in 2010 was for the same reason. The run offs that were created around greens complexes two years ago, really came into their own this year. Again, we felt the need to put out a different type of grass on approaches to give us a better opportunity to create tighter playing surfaces that were firmer and faster than in the past. All these points are still a work in progress and year on year we are getting closer to what we feel will be the best set up for the event. It is great being able to have the opportunity to review changes that have been made or indeed start looking at additional changes that could further enhance the golf course and event. Nothing however goes ahead without the consideration of what the impact of any changes would have on our membership and guests. So many people made comments this week about how we must have ‘shaved’ the greens down. To the contrary, we maintained our greens and a higher height of cut that we typically do for day to day play. Green speed is a number, that is all it is. Firmness and ball roll far outweighs pace. Pace will come once everything else is in place first. Maintaining greens on a tournament regime schedule for any length of time will take its toll. So I dare say the greens will be enjoying a little rest over the coming weeks as well. I guess the biggest talking point if one could call it that, was the pattern on the fairways. In our industry anyhow, it certainly caused a lot of debate from questions like “How did you do that?” to others asking “Why would you do that!”.

We had an opportunity to do something different, to be innovative and think outside the box and to create something quite unique, that’s why. It was immensely challenging for the crew to implement day in and day out, and if it wasn’t going to be perfect, then it would not have been worth doing in the first place. Of course it is not something that one would do throughout the year, but when you get an opportunity to try something different, then I suppose you give it a good crack!

To Peter, Marinus, Matthew and Raydon the team leaders this week, a job well done. To our Majlis Course Foreman Mario, what an unbelievable week you have had. Mario is the man under the most pressure in the week as he is the ‘go to’ guy on all fronts and has to deal with our indecisions or changes of mind at the last minute, which is often the case. The entire team deserve all the credit for presenting the course as they did this year. No single individual was more important that the other and for that reason WE all enjoyed a successful week. CRAIG HALDANE You won’t find Craig Haldane’s name on the leaderboard but it was up in lights after the first day’s play of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Golf’s biggest names were positively gushing in their praise of Emirates Golf Club’s course superintendent after taking full advantage of the Majlis’ pristine fairways and receptive Tiff Eagle Bernuda greens that rolled at a slippery 13 on the stimpmeter. “It’s absolutely immaculate, I mean, it’s flawless”, said defending champion, Stephen Gallacher after draining five birdie putts and holing out of a bunker for eagle on the 13th for his impressive opening round of 66. “The greens are perfect and the fairways are beautiful”, said Rory McIlroy. “It’s the best I have ever seen it”, the World Number One said of the Majlis which gets better with every edition of the Desert Swing’s unofficial Major. “The greens are pure, they really are. You have no excuses, if you hit a putt on line it will definitely go in. It’s a pleasure to play a course like this when it’s in this condition”.

record number of fans turned up on Sunday to watch world number one Rory McIlroy deliver a tactical masterclass as he secured his second Omega Dubai Desert Classic title in six years at Emirates Golf Club. With the 26th edition of the ‘Major of the Middle East’ boasting truly a ‘Classic field’ that comprised nine Major champions with a total of 17 Major victories, six of the seven topranked European Tour players and 83 European Tour winners with 358 titles between them, it was no surprise to see attendance touch a new peak. The tournament week recorded a healthy attendance of 38,165, which was well over last year’s figure. 11,077 fans were on hand on Sunday, beating the previous best figure of 9,508 recorded in 2011 when Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods, the top three players in the world at the time, featured in the tournament which was won eventually by Spain’s Alvaro Quiros. The crowd couldn’t have asked for more as McIlroy,

whether in conservative or aggressive mode, showed them how to win big in big tournaments. Conscious of recent turnarounds on the European Tour when Martin Kaymer and Charl Schwartzel relinquished substantial final round leads, McIlroy stuck to his game plan to get the job done in style, his 22-under 266 matching the lowest winning total by Thomas Bjørn (2001) and Stephen Gallacher (2013) in the 26-year history of the tournament. “It is always great coming back here, it is nice to put my name on the trophy once again,” said the 25-year-old Northern Irishman after reclaiming a title he last won in 2009, which was then his maiden professional title. He has statistics to back his love affair with the Majlis course where he is now 81 under par for his last six appearances that have yielded a first in 2009, sixth in 2010, tenth in 2011, fifth in 2012, ninth in 2014 and first in 2015. En route to his emphatic three-shot win -- his 10th in his 145th European Tour events -- McIlroy produced 24 birdies against just two bogeys - the first on the ninth in

the first round and the second, after 51 holes, on the seventh on the final day. He birdied the par-5, third on all four days and played the par-5, 10th in three-under par. The world number one is now 118 under par for his last seven European Tour events which have seen him secure four wins -- including The Open Championship and the US PGA Championship -- and three runners-up spots. With this success, he has also joined Ernie Els (1994, 2002, 2005), Tiger Woods (2006, 2008) and Stephen Gallacher (2013, 2014), as only players to record multiple victories in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. ndrew Whitelaw has watched Dubai grow into one of the world’s top golf destinations since he left Longniddry behind 17 years ago to carve out an impressive career in the United Arab Emirates. And he takes immense pride to see the Emirates Golf Club, where he is general manager, welcoming world No.1s and major winners year after year for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Whitelaw cut his golfing teeth in East Lothian along with the likes of Raymond Russell, who went on to become a European Tour winner, and Paul Wardell when they were junior clubmates at Longniddry. He still has fond memories of those days but his life now is just as exciting as he looks after a membership that is similar in size to that at Gullane, the biggest in the Lothians and comparable in another way due to the fact it is also holding a European Tour event this year in the shape of the Scottish Open. “When I came here in 1998, golf was still in the early stages of development,” said Whitelaw, who arrived in the UAE armed with a sound golfing background as well as a marketing degree at Stirling University. “There were only a handful of clubs, it was a relatively small local market and investment was minimal. “Fast forward 17 years and Dubai is now firmly on the map as an international golfing destination. Like the city itself, the golf market has undergone a transformation in which Emirates Golf Club has played a key role. We have welcomed a lot of competition in the market locally, other clubs that have the facilities, golf academies and restaurants to compete with ours. “To give you a feel for the pace of development at our club alone, in the last decade we redesigned one course into what is now the 18 hole Faldo, later installing floodlighting on this course; we introduced a nine hole Par-3 course, we upgraded to the most technologically

Jonathan and Stephen are Titleist Performance Institute Level 2 power coach professionals. Jonathan is also a Level 2 golf mechanics qualified professional. This week they have been utilising their expertise with the junior elite team. The bridge with leg extension test is a great test for stability in the pelvis/ lumbar spine/core and especially the gluteal muscles. The gluteal muscles play an extremely important role in the swing as they generate power from the ground up. Being able to activate these muscles is paramount when conducting the signature Peter Cowen Spiral Staircase move. The test will highlight any inhibition or weakness in the gluteal muscles due to over recruitment of synergistic muscles, such as the hamstrings and lower back. The reach, roll and lift test is great for the lower trapezius strength and mobility of the shoulder girdle. Weakness in the lower trap is an indicator for poor scapular control during the swing and faulty upper body postures. Lower trapezius limitations can lead to limited width in the golf swing and loss of shoulder range of motion in golf posture.

At Emirates Golf Club, these birds take refuge on trees alongside water hazards on the Faldo and Majilis course. The best time to see them are early in the morning when they are busy feeding for the day. Winter months from October to February is an ideal time to spot them during your regular round of golf at the course.

Grey Herons are wading birds of the heron family and native throughout temperate Europe, Africa and Asia. They are migratory and many reach Dubai during the winter months. These birds are large and can be as tall as 40 inches with even larger wingspan ranging from 60-80 inches. The birds are largely grey on their upper body region and off white, on the lower parts. Their long S-shaped necks are retractable and they have a slow flight action and it is this long S-shaped neck that distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbils. The bird calls are a loud croaking “fraaaank”. They feed in shallow water on fish, frogs and insects. They can be often found standing motionless by the shoreline stalking their prey. However, with occasional sudden strikes using their necks, the birds catch their prey. Herons breed in colonies in trees close to lakes or seashore.

Complete Physical Preparation for Golfers BY Jason Grange

believe, one of the factors that has, unequivocally, helped the best golfers reach their full potential is their commitment to complete physical preparation. When I’m talking about complete physical ‘prep’ I’m talking specifically about the following six physical qualities. • Posture • Core Stability • Flexibility • Balance • Strength / Power • Cardiovascular Fitness All of these qualities, of course, are supported by health, general athleticism and an excellent nutritional base. As a result of specific attention to each of these qualities, the new breed of player is leaner, more muscular, and more flexible than players in previous years. Over the coming weeks I will discuss each quality, how it relates to performance on the golf course, and how you can train /improve each aspect. Firstly we will look at Posture. Posture has been defined by Paul Chek (Golf Biomechanics Manual,1999) as “the position from which movement begins and ends.” Proper posture is important for a number of reasons, including that it places your body in an alignment where the stress on supporting ligaments, tendons and muscles is limited. Poor posture can lead to discomfort and injury. Good posture is crucial for the proper execution of the golf swing. Strong postural muscles will prevent/ reduce any unwanted movements from occurring. Correct posture has also been shown to improve the ability to strike the ball more consistently, improve power, stability and eliminate chronic golfing injuries. Exercises Firstly, your posture would need to be assessed, depending on your individual body alignment, then a variety of exercises would be prescribed to stretch (loosen) tight muscles and strengthen (tighten) weak muscles to help bring the body back into alignment. This would be discussed on an individual basis as every person would need a slightly different approach. As well as the many exercises designed to improve posture a simple push – pull exercise using a pulley system (shown below) is a great way to practice holding good posture during rotational movements like the golf swing. The other benefit of this exercise is that it stretches your hip flexors and trains your core, Start in a lunge position with the hand holding the pulley then rotate the body forward as if you are punching: Next we will discuss the second physical quality core stability, what it is, why it is crucial, how it will help performance on the golf course and how to train/improve core stabilisation in the gym. Dear Members, On writing this latest update it is the eve of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic so I hope you all enjoyed the championship and thank you to all members for supporting the event. Please remember golf carts are allowed back on the Majlis course from 12th February but I would still encourage you to walk the Majlis as much as possible. As I’m sure you will agree it is a fantastic walking course with the greens and tees so close together and only the occasional incline such as the eighth fairway! The January tournament calendar was fairly quiet and the highlights of February are the Ladies’ Camel Trophy on Monday 23rd February, the Men’s Chairman’s Cup on Friday 20th February, as well as one of the most popular events on the calendar; the Kohlman Nations Cup on Friday 27th February.

Please also note entry for the Omega Emirates Amateur Open is now on-line and the dates of this 36-hole championship are 5th and 6th March. With the tournament professionals in town during the Desert Swing I’m sure many of you watched in person, or from the comfort of your armchair and may have noticed some of the routines the tour pros go through that negatively impact pace of play. From obtaining the exact yardage to the pin position and looking at the putt from all angles, to lining up one’s ball with a specific mark. All these actions are time consuming especially when done at the WRONG time! For example don’t wait until it is your turn to play before calculating a yardage and look at your own line of putt while your fellow competitors look at theirs (within the bounds of normal etiquette). Pace of play is often commented upon in these pages but it does have such an impact on the enjoyment of the game for all concerned. Often newcomers to the game follow the professionals’ examples and therefore feel it is acceptable to look at a 10-foot putt from three different angles on a Friday morning social game. Therefore I thought the recent statements by World Number One Rory McIlroy, and by Stephen Gallacher and Giles Morgan (head of sponsorship for HSBC) were worth sharing for those who hadn’t seen them:

“I think time and format are the sort of things that can be looked at relatively easily, that could preserve all of the greatness of the game but make it a bit more rapid for people’s consumption.”

So you maybe try some way of speeding the game up.” Rory McIlroy “Certain forms of slow play is cheating. Guys who are slow, who know they’re slow and get fined all the time but don’t do anything about it are putting people off. They’re certainly putting viewers off. The bit that’s cheating is players with two paces [when they speed up once they’ve been put on the clock]. Also, guys are never ready. The guy who plays third in a group can slow everything up. By the time he gets to play he’s not even got his glove on yet. Look at putting? Everybody looks at the putt from one side but the third guy hasn’t looked and he ends up looking at it from four different sides. Stephen Gallacher

RULES BY RHYS When are you an Outside Agency?

ith the Club just hosting the 26th edition of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, many of you surrounded the fairways and greens to watch the top professionals take on the Majlis course. However, you may not have realised that you could easily have found yourself in the heart of a rules incident broadcasted around the world at any given time. Please let me explain how... Under the rules of golf a spectator is an outside agency. Rule 19-1 clarifies that if a players ball in motion is accidentally deflected or stopped by an outside agency, it is the rub of the green, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies, except: If a player’s ball in motion after a stroke other than on the putting green comes to rest in or on any moving or animate outside agency, (i.e. anyone who was out on the course during the tournament) the ball must, through the green or in a hazard, be

dropped, or on the putting green be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the outside agency, but not nearer the hole. If the ball is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted. Definition In match play, an “outside agency” is an agency other than either the player’s or opponent’s side, any caddie of either side, any ball played by either side at the hole being played or any equipment of either side. In stroke play, an outside agency is any agency other than the competitor’s side, any caddie of the side, any ball played by the side at the hole being played or any equipment of the side.

The referee clarified with the spectator where he had been standing when the ball came to rest in his pocket and Rory was required to drop the ball as near as possible to the spot under the point where the ball lay in his pocket, no nearer the hole. As previously mentioned, Rory’s ball was immediately recoverable and therefore required to continue with the same ball.

An outside agency includes a referee, a marker, an observer and a forecaddie. Neither wind nor water is an outside agency.

The above example is very rare but demonstrates how anything is possible in the game that we all love playing so much.

Example During the second round of the Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy’s drive at the 14th hole somehow bounced off a tree and landed in the pocket of a spectator!

FROM THE KITCHEN OF CHEF JEFFREY BROTHERS Dear Members, As Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, I thought, ‘What better recipe to share with you this month than Salt Crust Baked Fish for Two.” Baking fish in a salt crust has been done for generations and can really bring the ‘wow’ effect to your special dinner. Two great aspects about baking fish in a salt crust are that it keeps the fish moist by protecting it, and the crust itself can be flavoured with an endless combination of aromatics. I would also like to invite you to our members’ monthly cooking class that happens the first Tuesday of each month. You can try recipes like this and many great others that myself and our culinary team prepare.

Salt Crust Baked Fish Serves 2 - 4 1 whole 4 2 cups 1 1pc 4 tbsp 1 lemon

3-pound fish such as snapper, bream, or sea bass Egg whites Rock or coarse salt Bunch fresh thyme Lemon zest extra virgin olive oil cut into wedges

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. (230 degrees Celsius) 2. Clean and gut fish, remove top and bottom fins, scale and remove gills. 3. Whisk egg whites to soft peaks and fold in salt. Place thyme in body cavity and set aside. 4. Place 4 tablespoons of egg white mixture on a large platter, suitable for oven to table use. 5. Place fish on top of mixture and evenly spread remaining mixture over top of fish. Place fish and platter in oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. 6. When fish is cooked, remove from oven and strike crust to crack. 7. Carefully remove salt crust from top of fish and divide it between two plates. 8. Serve with good olive oil and lemons

Book Celebrating 25 Years Of Dubai Desert Classic Launched

The lavishly illustrated coffee table book by world renowned photo journalist, David Cannon, and Rodney Bogg, who has served on the tournament committee for many years, traces the history of the European Tour event from the day the idea was conceived to the final putt made by Stephen Gallacher marking the climax of the 25 years of the ‘Classic celebrations’ in 2014. Produced by Tournament Publisher Motivate Publishing, the book features spectacular photography by Cannon, the only journalist to have covered all 25 editions of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in addition to photographing his 100th men’s Major at the US PGA Championship in 2014.
