Emirates Golf Club Senior Management

I

t’s Desert Classic time!! Welcome to all players - it’s great to see you all back at Emirates Golf Club. It will be a great week for all concerned, players, members and spectators as we watch the professionals play the course…as it should be played!

Welcome back also to all past members who will be here for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic week, including Past Captains, Joan and Rai Legnar, Paul Thornberry, Mick Brett, Dick Purchase and Angela and Bob Connor (who is here in his official capacity as starter for the event). The Abu Dhabi Championship was exciting to the end; Rickie Fowler produced two moments of magic to hold off late charges from Thomas Pieters, Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson to win his second European Tour title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. “This was a big one. Last year having a multiple-win season, to come back and work on getting back in the winner’s circle after a successful season and keep moving forward. This is a great start.“ Rickie Fowler “You don’t need me to tell you what an incredibly talented young player Rickie Fowler is and he’s one of a bunch of young guys who are great role models for our game...” Ernie Els Our course is looking superb thanks to all the hard work of the Golf Course Maintenance team. Well done to you all.

I

t is that time of the year when the golfing world descends on Dubai and more importantly our beloved Emirates Golf Club.

Regardless of who wins the Omega Dubai Desert Classic this year, we already have a winner in Emirates Golf Club, Dubai and the UAE. This month we are including a new tournament “The Midnight Madness” in our calendar which is a 27-hole

event. It will be played on our floodlit Faldo course from midnight until sunrise which is a novelty that not many other golf courses can offer. It will be fun and different so come and join in. Let me finish by wishing everyone a great Omega Dubai Desert Classic and I look forward to seeing all of you during the event.

3 Captain’s Message

As I write this message the initial feedback from the professional golfers has been extremely positive. They have said that the Majlis is in the best shape they have ever seen before and they have been rating it as one of the best if not the best condition of play anywhere in the world.

Obviously I would like to thank Craig Haldane our Director of Golf Course Maintenance and his dedicated team for making us proud.

in’s Lady Capta Message

e are now just over half way through the golfing season (I know it’s a cliche but really, where does the time go?). I hope that you are all making the most of the fabulous cooler weather and getting out onto the course as much as possible. I was out playing on the Par 3 course last night, something I don’t do often enough really, and it got me thinking about how lucky we are to have so many great opportunities to play such varied golf at the Club, with choices between the Majlis, the Faldo (day and night) and the Par 3 course too. Besides being great practice for the short game, it is also very quick to play a round on the Par 3 and a lovely way to spend an evening midweek. It was wonderful to see a great turnout of 47 ladies for the Monthly Medal in January. It seems that everyone is very keen to collect points to qualify for the

Curtisy Cup which takes place in April. For those of you who don’t know, this is a 36-hole Ryder Cup style tournament between the ladies representing teams for Europe and Rest of the World, and it is one of the most popular events on the calendar. Qualifying points are awarded according to net scores posted when playing a Medal event. If you haven’t yet played in any it’s not too late to start accumulating points with the next Medal scheduled for Monday 15th February. Thanks to all the ladies who took part in the Nations Cup last week - 25 teams in total representing a wide selection of countries. It always looks so impressive seeing all the different colourful national flags streaming out behind the golf buggies around the course. This has to be one of my favourite tournaments celebrating the diversity and friendship of our ladies’ section. Well done to

Sweden (represented by Ingrid & Cecilia) for claiming the trophy. February is the shortest month of the year, made even shorter with course closures for the Desert Classic, but there are plenty of events packed into the month. Besides the Medal we have the Camel Trophy, the Ladies’ Club Championship, the next round of the Inter Club Competition and the ladies’ golfing trip to Oman to look forward to. Of course we have the Omega Desert Classic too - with the Majlis in top condition this is sure to be a great event. I look forward to seeing you, whether you are watching the golf, playing, or just enjoying time in the Clubhouse. Happy golfing, Helen Srivastava Lady Captain 2015-2016

6 SPOTLIGHT ON

OWEN CLARKE

H

i, my name is Owen Clarke. I am 14 years old and I am in Year 10 at JESS Arabian Ranches. I was born in Dubai and picked up my first golf club at the age of two; it was only a plastic set but I loved trying to hit the ball with them. My dad, who is a keen golfer, took me to Nad Al Sheba driving range with a couple of training clubs when I was four years of age and I have loved playing golf since then. I joined Emirates Golf Club Academy and had my first lesson when I was eight, moving up through the different levels until I finally reached the Elite Juniors in September last year. I became an EGF member in January 2013 with a starting handicap of 28; my current handicap is 7 and by the end of the year my personal target is to get down to 3. I practice my long and short game and play either 9 or 18 holes most days after school. The Elite group with Steve is a great experience which teaches me techniques and drills to improve my game and gives me the chance to

compete against other kids with lower handicaps than me. This year I have been competing in the Junior Opens around the UAE, playing against amazing local talent, which I am really enjoying. In 2014 I was invited to join the school golf team; it was an opportunity to play against kids from lots of schools in Dubai and JESS went on to win the Order of Merit. I have been made ViceCaptain for the team this year and we hope to continue our successful winning streak. According to Steve, my strengths in golf are my ability to hit the ball a long way and roll the ball purely on the green. I also have a good work ethic and the desire to keep improving. My weakness is to neutralise my ball flight and try to develop the ability to shape the ball left to right alongside my natural draw.

I dream of becoming a golf professional as there can’t be anything better than getting paid to do something you love but I know that I have to work extremely hard and commit a lot of time to practising to reach this.

Pro’s Tip of the Month

Wedge to Win We are all aware that from 100 yards is crucial in golf to help lower our scores. Try out these three simple steps to improve your strike, control and spin.

Weight Distribution

- all good wedge players will use the front leg to position 60/70% of their body weight on during the swing try to keep your weight on the leading leg to ensure that your body is not swaying from side to side. This will help with overall stability and the down strike on the ball for good contact and spin.

Hands In Close

Dubai Golf Par 3 Series 19TH JANUARY 2016

E

mirates Golf Club hosted the fourth event of this season’s Dubai Golf Par 3 Series on Thursday 14th January, played over the Par 3 course. This year the Par 3 events are open events to all juniors in the UAE. This was the first event at the Emirates Golf Academy to have a representation from Emirati participants and there are exciting times ahead for all involved in the series. With a quite magnificent 21, 6 under par young Rauiri Cooper claimed top honours on the day. It was fantastic to see not one, but two holes-in-one from Arianna Agarwal and Tristan Thorpe!

– this shot is all about feel and control so get your hands nice and close to your legs as this will encourage the shaft to work on the vertical plane and improve your connection with your hands working in time with your body for better results. Many players I see stand with the club and ball at full reach and this is the cause of poor striking and feel.

Finish In Style

– a 3/4 swing, both on the back swing and follow through will help you with your distance control and the over contact. Try to finish with a shortened follow through with the hands sitting in line with the left shoulder this will help ensure that your chest is the operator turning through and not just throwing your hands at the ball. Keep these in mind the next time you have a wedge into the green and watch it go close!!

Incorrect - hands too far away from body

Dubai-based Rayhan Thomas claims 2016 Qatar Open Article courtesy of Joy Chakravarty, Sport 360

D

ubai-based Rayhan Thomas showcased the remarkable strides his game has made in recent times when he won the 2016 Qatar Open on Saturday and clinched a dream spot in this year’s Commercialbank Qatar Masters. Keep on winning: Rayhan Thomas. Dubai-based Rayhan Thomas showcased the remarkable strides his game has made in recent times when he won the 2016 Qatar Open on Saturday and clinched a dream spot in this year’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. The 16-year-old, who is the number one amateur in the UAE having won the Emirates Golf Federation Order of Merit last season, defeated Dutchman Pierre Verlaar Jr in sensational fashion at Doha Golf Club yesterday. Thomas first forced a play-off with a birdie on the par-5 closing hole of the Peter Harradine-designed golf course, which is the host venue of the Qatar Masters, and then birdied it again in the first extra hole. Earlier both players could not be separated after three rounds and were

tied at the top on three-over par 219, having started the day tied for the lead at one-over par. Both shot rounds of two-over par 74 each to be one better than England’s Charlie Strickland (220), and two better than proven amateurs of the region – Doha-based Slovakian Jakub Hrinda and Saudi Arabian Othman Al Mulla. A delighted Thomas told Sport360: “I am over the moon. It has not sunk in yet, but this is definitely the best win of my career, especially considering the prize that was on the offer. “I am going to earn a lot of WAGR (World Amateur Golf Ranking) points, but that is beside the point. This gives me my first chance to play with the established stars of the game in a big European Tour event. I am really excited about that,” added the Indian who is ranked 1,468th among the amateurs in the world. Thomas showed a lot of character to extricate himself from a sticky situation towards the end of the final round. Verlaar Jnr had taken a three-shot lead with two holes to play and looked set to claim the 30th edition of the Qatar Open.

That was after Thomas three-putted for a double bogey on the par-4 15th hole, and then failed to reduce the gap on the driveable par-4 16th hole, where he found the green with his tee shot and yet finished with a par after a second successive three-putt. But the pressure got to Verlaar Jnr on the 17th and he made a double bogey on the testing par-3 hole, before Thomas smashed a three-wood second shot from 260 yards on the 18th to 25 feet and calmly two-putted for a birdie to tie with his rival. Greenkeeper’s Cuttings

I

am often stopped by members at this time of year, just prior to the tournament with the comment “You must be really busy now”. I always have a wry smile as I so appreciate the gesture. It’s the maintenance that we do back in July, August and September that sets us up for the season. As many golfers are away during this time, it would be hard to appreciate the amount of work that the team endures to ensure healthy growing conditions for the times that matter. We have an Organic Matter Dilution Programme that has proven very successful over the years. It includes activities such as Core Aeration, Verticutting, Grooming, Topdressing, Dusting and Needle Tining. Each activity is aimed at helping us achieve certain targets within our soil to help improve percolation and infiltration of water and effective use of nutrition throughout the season. If the above ‘exercises’ were related to the health of a Our brilliant golf course maintenance human body, it would be the team out with the mowers, mowing the conditioning phase, i.e. making rough for the final cut ahead of Omega sure your body is functional to Dubai Desert Classic! achieve a certain target which may be strength related or endurance based. None of that matters however if the nutrition is not taken care of and the exact same principles apply to the turf! We have a very balanced ‘diet’ in place for our surfaces and we monitor exactly how much nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micro nutrients are applied per 1000 square feet, per month. It is that detailed and that important. the information above. This, combined Preparing for the actual tournament, with keeping our colleagues well trained, although not easy, is certainly enjoyed motivated and inspired, make the job if you have had a successful build up throughout the year incorporating all of that much easier. Few may know this

fact, but we have a turnover of less than 4% in the GCM department, which is a credit to the team who have grown in experience over the years and without whom, we would not be here enjoying our fabulous facilities. We know how important this Club is to our membership and how much you enjoy playing the golf courses. At times we may get in your way through lack of concentration or an error in judgment. It is never with intent, that much we assure you. Next time you see one of the maintenance crew out there, tip your cap and say thanks for the hard work they do. They really are an asset to the team at EGC and I thank them daily for the commitment, dedication and passion they bring to the job every day. Thanks for your patience and understanding during the 2015 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and during the final stages of preparations for the 2016 Omega Dubai Desert Classic - it is greatly appreciated and without you, our members, we wouldn’t succeed. RULES BY RHYS

A

Rules

Anchoring Putter Techniques

fter much debate in the golfing world over this new rule, the time has come when the anchored putting technique has been removed from the game. Mid and long putters are still allowed but the method in which they are allowed to be used has changed as of January 1st 2016.

What’s Changed???

The new entry of Rule 14-1b prohibits strokes made with the club or a hand gripping the club held directly against the player’s body or with a forearm held against the body to establish an anchor point that indirectly anchors the club.

What the Rule Says...

In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point.”

NOTE 1: The club is anchored “directly” when the

player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm.

NOTE 2: An “anchor point” exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club. Penalty for breach of Rule 14-1: Match Play Loss of hole Stroke Play Two Strokes If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the Club or simply email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com.

Bird of the emirates

Glossy Ibis

Scientific Name: Plegadis falcinellus Shot: Faldo Course, Dubai Emirates Golf Club Date shot: October 2015 Wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Glossy_ibis Description: The bird for the month is a migratory winter visitor, the Glossy Ibis. It is a shorebird or wading bird in the Ibis family of birds. They are scattered over regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the Atlantic. There are reports of a large breeding colony of these birds established in Spain but they make their way to the Middle East from Europe over winter. After breeding, they undertake dispersal movements and are very nomadic in nature. These birds are usually seen feeding in shallow water and they generally nest in freshwater or brackish wetlands. Their diet consists of adult and larval insects such as

aquatic beetles, dragonflies, damselflies, grasshoppers, crickets, flies, leeches, crabs, crayfish and occasionally fish, nesting birds, snakes, amphibians and lizards. They are quite large birds and hard to miss with the distinctive beak and the glossy plumage that shines in the sun. They make croaks and grunting noises. Presently these birds are protected under the AEWA (African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds) agreement and threatened by wetland habitat degradation through drainage, increased salinity, groundwater extraction and invasions by exotics plants. At Emirates Golf Club, the bird was spotted and photographed near the water holes on the Faldo Course. There were only a few spotted that were feeding far from each other along the golf course. A good time to see these birds is early morning or late afternoon around October to December; however, occasionally the birds can be spotted up to February as well. True to its name, the glossy feathers of this bird are hard to miss.

UPDATE FROM THE GOLF OFFICE Dear Members,

C

ongratulations this month to Michael Harradine on winning the Omega Emirates Amateur Open. He repeated his success of 2014 with rounds of 71 over the Faldo course followed by an incredible 66 over the Majlis which was a superb effort three weeks prior to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic with dense rough and fast greens! Well done Michael! It is great to see such fabulous support of the Member Pro-Am. The Academy team started the concept in the summer and I’m delighted to say we had 33 teams sign up for the January edition. For those who missed out you will be given first refusal in the February event. The dates of these popular Pro-Ams are below: Friday 12th February – 1pm Faldo course Friday 18th March – 1m Faldo Course Friday 22nd April – 1pm Majlis Course Friday 13th May – 1pm Faldo course Events come thick and fast after the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The first event is the launch of Midnight Madness, an event previously staged at Nad Al Sheba course. It is back by popular demand and will be staged on Thursday 11th February, a 27 hole 4-man team event from midnight. A tournament of dedication and stamina for sure! One of the most popular events on the schedule is on Friday 26th February, the

Kohlman Nations Cup. Please remember the sign-up sheet opens on-line two weeks beforehand. We then have the Ladies’ Club Championship at the end of February. During the walking period on the Majlis course we are currently losing a huge amount of face towels. They either end up in the trash bins or in golfers’ bags so please be encouraged to hand them in following your round so they can be washed and recycled. We are currently losing up to 200 on some weekends! For those members who use a long putter please be reminded that as of 1st January 2016 the below new rule applies: Rule 14-1b – Anchoring the Club – A new rule is introduced to prohibit anchoring the club, either ‘directly’ or by use of an ‘anchor point’ during the making of a stroke. Note: long putters are still allowed but it is the specific act of anchoring that is not. If you have any questions please consult Rhys James or myself. Omega Dubai Desert Classic Reminder:

A Unraked bunker on the Faldo

RAKING BUNKERS

T

he Golden Rules when playing a golf course is to remember to RAKE THE BUNKERS, FILL IN DIVOTS WITH THE SAND PROVIDED AND REPAIR PITCH MARKS

As we all know it’s very annoying to find your ball in the middle of a deep footprint in an unraked bunker or even in deep grooves caused by not raking correctly so please make the effort to clean up after playing bunker shots. On a recent round on The Faldo I photographed eight bunkers in succession on the front nine, none of which had been raked…at all. By raking a bunker correctly, you not only help someone behind you, but you set a proper example for someone else to do the same.

A pitch mark only takes a few seconds to fix correctly however, a pitch mark repaired incorrectly takes over three weeks to heal

P

lease help us to maintain the quality of our golf courses by repairing all pitch marks and divots.

Repairing those little depressions is very important. Equally important is doing it the right way. While many golfers fail to repair ball marks there are also many well-meaning golfers who do “repair” the pitch marks, only to do so incorrectly. A ball mark can cause the grass in the depression to die, leaving not just a scar but also a pit in the putting surface that can knock well-struck putts offline. Repairing a ball mark restores a smooth surface and helps keep the grass healthy.

Where Are They Now?

WHERE are they now?

17

t the very moment of writing, we are in our home in Windlesham, Surrey in England, which is a commuter village on the Surrey/Berkshire border just south of Ascot and due west of Heathrow Airport. The village is well served with six pubs, one just an 8-iron from our front door, and well connected with the M4 motorway north, the M3 south and the M25 car park to the east; we are an easy 20 minutes drive from Heathrow Terminal 5 and 47 minutes on the train to central London. We are surrounded by some of the best, but largely inaccessible golf courses in the country, Wentworth, Sunningdale, Swinley Forest and The Berkshire which all benefit from being built on the Bagshot sand belt. Unfortunately the accessible golf courses are mostly built on clay, rendering them very soft and muddy in the wet winter months; the 8-iron to the pub turns into a 4-iron in winter! We have some neighbours with Dubai history; Lorraine and Alan Main aren’t far, Jenni Hoskins is close, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid is very close and Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid is virtually next door; some we see, some we don’t. Ascot is famous for it’s horse racing circuit and Royal Ascot week is a big event in the summer months; imagine the Dubai World Cup multiplied by five; that’ll give you some idea of the mess some people get into! We are members of Mill Ride Golf Course just outside Ascot, a great and challenging layout, a rural feel with deer, horses, rabbits around, but excessive rain renders the course unenjoyable in winter months. Since Peter finished up consulting at the end of March last year we have divided our time between Windlesham and our other home near Marbella on the Costa Del Sol (Golf) where we do not suffer too much from muddy golf courses; we are planning three month stints in each home for the rest of 2016. In Spain we are closer to a few more Dubai friends; Lynne and Pete Hood, Eileen and Dave Smith, Alwyn and Dave Nesbitt, Ann and John Harrington, Kate and Peter Gaskin, Paula and Frank Johnstone, Carol and David Sealy, Gabby and Khaled Daghestani, Bernadette and Paul Thornberry, to name just a few. We left Dubai in October 2011 to tick a few boxes, Janice to be nearer her elderly parents, her Dad is still going strong at 92 but her Mum died a little over a year ago and Peter to live and work in the UK again after 34 years - two years spent in London, one in Aberdeen; we both wanted to start visiting places in Europe that we had studiously avoided while in Dubai so holidays in Iceland, France and Dorset have punctuated periods at both homes. We have ticked all those boxes and added a few more; we really like living both here and in Spain and are pretty happy with our choices. We got lucky! There are, of course, some drawbacks; the stupidity of politicians, the decline of workmanship, the tax man, people who don’t return calls, etc. etc. but, on balance, we do not regret our move back home one bit. If we are honest, we do miss the golf in Dubai, especially the competition, the Saturday group and the year-round condition of the golf courses but, as for the rest, not so much. However, we are likely to be back in Dubai for a few days in February and hope that we might see some of you at least. We look forward to that. Peter & Janice

So, let us all start fixing our ball marks, and doing it the right way. If you have a moment – if there isn’t another group of golfers behind you waiting for you to clear the green – fix one or two other ball marks, too, if you find more of them on the green.
