Editorial
Happy New Year to all (I’m not sure how far into January we keep saying this but never mind!) New Year’s Eve already seems to be a distant memory as we look forward to all the upcoming events at the Club, the highlight being the Omega Dubai Desert Classic of course. What a treat that will be with so many top ranked players coming for the 30th Anniversary event as well as some players coming for the first time, namely World No 5 Bryson DeChambeau who will be interesting to watch for sure.
Christopher May
Chief Executive Officer cmay@dubaigolf.com
Known as golf’s ‘Mad Scientist’, DeChambeau has a unique one plane swing and uses single-length shafts. His irons and wedges are all 37.5 inches long – the same as a 7 iron – and all have the same lie and bounce angles. Instead of numbers, he stamps the clubs with names; his 60 degree lob wedge is named ‘The King’ after Arnold Palmer and his 6 iron is named ‘Juniper’ after the sixth hole at Augusta. DeChambeau has worn a Ben Hogan cap since he was 13, which only adds to his growing legend. European Ryder Cup star Tommy Fleetwood has confirmed he will play in the 2019 Omega Dubai Desert Classic, reinforcing its status as ‘The Major of the Middle East’.

Fleetwood will be joined by fellow Ryder Cup stars, past and present, including Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, Thorbjørn Olesen, Thomas Bjørn, Lee Westwood, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Colin Montgomerie, in what will be a star-studded field as the world’s best compete for the famous Dallah trophy. All of this makes for an exciting event. Having digressed, I must go back to New Year’s Eve at the Club and what an event that was. Congratulations and thank you to Steen, Mary Ann and the F&B team, Chef Nicholas and his team and also the engineering team, all of whom had a huge part to play in setting up the event which saw 1400 people in attendance. The entertainment, Freddy Mercury tribute act and Abba tribute band were excellent, food was superb, as was the service by our wonderful colleagues. Thanks to all for a very successful evening.

16th Green Chalet - Exclusive for Members and Guests After the popularity of this area in the past few years, we have once again secured the use of the top floor of the hospitality chalet behind the 16th green exclusively for the use of our members and their guests. We hope you can join us there to enjoy the action as it unfolds and take part in some of our member activities. Due to the size limitations of the chalet, access is limited and numbers will be monitored on a one in, one out basis. The chalet will be open from 10am every day from Thursday 24th January to Sunday 27th January. Access to the Clubhouse and the chalet will be with two different wristbands, these can be collected from the members’ wrist banding station located in the refreshment station next to the main putting green, and this will be clearly signposted.
Clubhouse Terrace and Carine Hospitality During the four tournament days (24th–27th January) hospitality packages for the Clubhouse Terrace or Carine are available through https:// www.omegadubaidesertclassic.com/ buy-tickets/
Please note the Members’ Lounge, Spike bar (excluding the dining area) and decked terrace (overlooking the pool) will be available to all members and guests with clubhouse access. Barasti at the 15th Hole The championship organisers, in conjunction with Barasti, will create an amphitheatre arena surrounding the 15th green of the Majlis course. The Barasti public viewing area will provide extensive food and beverage in addition to a large screen so patrons can follow the action throughout the day. Volunteers Thank you to those members who have volunteered their services for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic 2019. If you are interested in being involved, please email Chief Marshal and Assistant Golf Services Manager Cian Hurley on CHurley@dubaigolf.com Bag Storage In order to facilitate bag storage facilities for the tournament players, we would kindly request that members with bags in the Bag Storage remove them by Friday 18th January. If your locker is requested, we would be grateful if you could arrange for it to be cleared by Friday 18th January, you will, however, have access to and use of the locker rooms until Sunday 20th January. Fit Lab The swimming pool, gym, squash, tennis and Padel Tennis courts and SensAsia Urban Spa will be closed from Monday 21st January, reopening on Monday 28th January. Food and Beverage We would request that members settle their food and beverage accounts on the spot rather than running ‘tabs’ due to the large numbers of members at the club, this ensures no mistakes are made with your billing. Members’ signing privileges and discounts will still apply in the Clubhouse and we would again encourage you to use your membership cards for swiping when closing your bills to ensure bills are charged to the correct accounts. Due to the tournament, there will be no theme nights staged at the club including Club Night on Monday 21st January and Jones Jazz night on Thursday 24th January. members and their guests will be required to report to the wrist-banding checkpoint at the main entrance to the championship or the refreshment hut near the main putting green with their tickets to be wrist-banded. By doing this, we are better able to control access to the Clubhouse and ensure that members enjoy the atmosphere in the Club.
Traffic Management Please be advised that during the tournament, traffic leaving Emirates Golf Club will not be permitted to turn left when leaving the main gate. This is a directive from the RTA and Dubai Police to ensure that traffic congestion is kept to a minimum. The above will also affect residents exiting the villa gate past the 10th hole on the Faldo course, who will also be unable to turn left. This will be effective as follows: Thursday 24th January to Sunday 27th January from 5am to 7pm I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your cooperation and assistance in the hosting of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and wish all of you an enjoyable tournament. Warm regards, Barney Coleman Club Manager
PLANET OR PLASTIC CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Thank you to National Geographic and to the 124 members who supported the launch event on 15th December. Please see a time line of events below: • 15th December:The National Geographic Planet or Plastic Championship took place on our Majlis course. • The 124 members who competed received a sponsored flask. REMEMBER - one of the aims of the campaign is to drastically reduce the number of plastic bottles consumed at the Club. In 2017 we went through 200,000 plastic bottles, which were given out to golfers pre-round on the Faldo and Majlis courses • January 2019 we are expecting our main shipment of National Geographic branded flasks. All 2019 golfing members (full and weekday) will receive a personalised bottle from the Golf Reservations team. On receipt of the bottle we ask you to sign the pledge wall. This is a commitment from you to use the flask and the on-course water igloo stations as opposed to using plastic bottles on course. • By quarter one of 2019, Dubai Golf are hopeful of securing a campaign partner to provide refillable bottles for all members and visitors over our three clubs (EGC, DCGYC, JGE) • The vision is to not offer any plastic bottles to golfers prior to teeing off • We have moved away from plastic straws • The plastic cups have been changed to paper versions. • The plastic bag switch in the locker rooms is temporarily stalled until we find a better solution. Thank you

Dear Members, May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year and I hope that 2019 brings you everything you deserve. Where does the time go? 2019 has arrived and, as always, the Club has a busy January. I hope you all enjoyed the festive break and that you rang in the New Year in style. I was lucky to be part of the celebrations for the New Year’s Eve party on the lawn and what a fabulous occasion it was. Around 1400 people were in attendance for the hottest and best priced ticket in town. We were entertained by a Freddy Mercury and ABBA tribute band which got everyone on the dance floor grooving and dancing from the start of the night. A special mention and thanks to Steen who was the organiser of the entertainment which turned out to be a great choice. Thanks also to Chef Nicholas for the superb food - it can’t be easy catering for that number of people and thanks to Jaco and his team who made sure we were served drinks promptly. Congratulations to all and I’m sure
this will become an integral part of the Golf Club celebrations for many years to come. The Majlis is in wonderful condition as we approach the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on 24th January. We are very lucky to be able to play the course up to two weeks before the event in very near perfect conditions and, in doing so, walk off some of the weight we might have gained over the festive period!! The big event this month is the Omega Dubai Desert Classic which promises to be a wonderful tournament. This is the 30th Anniversary of the event and it will have a top class field competing for the Dallah Trophy. It will be great to see so many top ranking players and Ryder Cup stars playing. Best of luck to them all for the event and to Haotong Li on defending his title. He was a very popular winner last year and a gentleman, patiently having the many photos taken on the practice green. It was like another four hour round getting all the official photos done. I’m sure the new hospitality stands will be greatly appreciated and those
of you lucky enough to experience them will be in for a wonderful view. I’m delighted that there is a viewing platform and open area in the hospitality suites which will enhance the atmosphere around the 9th and 18th greens. As a proud Irishman I’m hoping that Paul Dunne or Shane Lowry will be picking up the trophy during my Captain’s year. As always, members need to remember to collect their free access tickets to the event from the downstairs reception. I’m sure the event will be well-supported and busy and my best wishes go to the organisers for a successful week. Best of luck to everyone playing in the Emirates Amateur Open this month. 36 holes over the Faldo and the Majlis courses is the task facing all participants and I look forward to presenting the trophy to a very worthy winner and great golfer. I hope you all have a wonderful golfing month and enjoy the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Paul Byrne Club Captain 2018-2019

Christmas is without doubt ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, and this year it came around particularly quickly. The months and weeks vanished and, before I knew it, December had arrived a little bit by surprise. How did it come by that fast? Perhaps it is because we were too busy having fun and didn’t really notice the time passing. December in the ladies’ section is the shortest month of the season, packed with great fun and a cheerful mood. In under three weeks a Medal, a Christmas Scramble, a Mixed Christmas Scramble supported by National Geographic and a Stableford were played and they all contributed to the memories of our festive season. The turnout for the Ladies’ Christmas Scramble sparked fascinated stares around the Club. Watching the faces of the men playing that morning while the Club was invaded by ladies dressed in all sorts of Christmas gear made the day even more enjoyable! Other highlights on

The 2017 Omega Dubai Desert Champion, Sergio Garcia, triumphed earlier this year as the all-time highest points scorer in Paris, becoming the most successful Ryder Cup player in history. Garcia was the second Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion who then went on to win The Masters, after Danny Willett accomplished the same in 2016. In a twist of fate, both Garcia’s and Willett’s caddies were assigned the no. 89 – the same year the Omega Dubai Desert Classic was born. Will lucky number 89 be victorious again in 2019? The 2018 Champion, Haotong Li, will return to Dubai to defend his title and secure back-to-back wins. The 23 year old from China became the first Asian golfer to win the event in 2018 when he beat four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy by one stroke. European Tour Rookie of the Year 2018, Shubhankar Sharma, is confirmed to join fellow UAE based amateur Rayhan Thomas as well as Jovan Rebula, British amateur champion and nephew of the only three-time Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion Ernie Els. David Spencer, Tournament Director, commented: “We are looking forward to ensuring that our 30th edition continues to enhance Dubai’s growing reputation as a world class golfing destination. The players love our tournament because they get to spend time in our dynamic and vibrant city. No doubt when the winner’s name is etched on our Dallah trophy in 2019, the tradition of Greatness will continue.” His Highness Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi from the Emirates Golf Federation stated: “The Omega Dubai Desert Classic has become one of the most famous golf tournaments in the world. The 2019 event will showcase the last 30 years with many stars past and present. It is a great platform for our sport and will help to encourage the next generation of golfers to our great game.” Spectators will be able to enjoy a range of exciting new additions to the tournament for the special 30th edition, including a brand new viewing platform on the 18th green, new spectator area on the 15th hole and a redesigned tournament village. With so much on offer, fans can take advantage of the event’s special 30th edition offer where they can enjoy a full four-day experience for only AED 250. The 30th edition of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic will be held at Emirates Golf Club from 24 – 27 January, 2019. Since 1989, the tournament has seen 24 different winners, including nine Major champions and 13 different nationalities.

SPOTLIGHT ON
Valdemar August Kofod-Olsen
Hi, My name is Valdemar August Kofod-Olsen. I am 14 years old, I am Danish and I have lived in Dubai for almost ten years. I go to Gems Wellington International School where I participate in the school golf team. I am also a proud member of the Emirates Golf Club Elite team who recently signed a sponsorship deal with Swiss Global. Golf is my passion and I have been playing since I was three years of age when my parents took me to the driving range in Senegal, and I would always ask for more practice balls. Now I am working hard on all aspects of my game My weekly training is as follows...I have Monday biomechanics with Jonathan Craddock, Tuesday supervised training with Stephen Deane, Wednesday gym with Jonathan Craddock and Richard Dunsby, Thursday 9-hole competition, Friday full
swing mechanics with Stephen Deane and finally, on Saturday, I have one hour of short game mechanics with Alastair Brown and one hour of putting with Bryan Smith. Through this tight training programme, my handicap has improved from 20 to now 5.2 which is almost four times lower than when I started the programme. I have also started to participate regularly in many tournaments, like the Global Junior Ranking, EGF Junior Opens and many more. During my ten years in Dubai I have played many different golf courses like The Els Club, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Abu Dhabi Golf Club, Yas links, the Faldo course and many more. However, the Majlis course has, and will
always be, my favourite. The Majlis is a tough but elegant golf course, which I definitely recommend if you would like to test your skills. My favourite hole is the 17th as every month I get closer and closer to my goal of driving the green. It is a short par 4 in which you can go safe or risk a long drive over the rough sandy waste area to the right. It is a hole where you can sometimes
lose a ball or be rewarded with a possible eagle or a gimme birdie. One of my best memories was to carry the board for four different groups during the DP World Tour Championship. This further developed my course management and mental game as I got to experience the thoughts and ideas discussed by eight different golfers and their caddies. While playing golf your mental game is an
important aspect of keeping your head cool during an off day on the golf course. Another golf related memory was the first time I ever won a junior tournament. This was in 2014, when I was 10. I shot 84 on the Els Golf Club during a Junior Troon Series event. I won first net and second gross. I love this game because of the hard work and dedication needed to make it to professional level. This is the driving force that keeps my passion alive, and this is what prevents me from getting bored on the driving range after several hours of hard practice. I have high future ambitions for the sport and I hope one day that I will become a well known European Tour player.

‘Float like a butterfly’ from the greenside bunker! The greenside bunker shot is a specialist shot and therefore we need a special grip...the butterfly grip. Here, the hands turn into each other producing a strong left hand and weak right hand. This puts the grip pressure on the top of the club handle making it easy to set the wrists during the swing and keep the loft and bounce on the club. When
Pro’s Tip
Pro’s Tip of the Month
you deliver the club you can push the pressure of the bounce into the sand without losing the loft and using different wrist speeds to alter the flights. The desired result is a high spinning, soft landing shot that releases like a putt!
Greenside Bunker Practice Station Measure of Success Using the rake handle or the butt end of your grip, draw some lines in the sand for your work station. Draw a target line and a parallel line and then have two more parallel lines that are moved slightly left of this. The lines to the left are for your feet and the swing path for your club. There is also a line for your ball position that should be positioned inside your left heel.
Obviously the ball flight and spin control will give you good feedback here, but also analyse the sand. You want to see an oval divot in the sand to show the correct explosion and the widest part of the oval should be where the ball was.
Open your left foot and left knee towards your line of swing, therefore making it easy to open the body left through impact, turning around the left knee without losing the control of your feet.
Extra Tip 1. Take your time to practise your new grip 2. Feel the difference in setting your wrists 3. Visualise how your loft stays on the club

19 Rules of Golf THE NEW RULES OF GOLF – TOP 20 MUST KNOW CHANGES OFFICIAL AS OF JANUARY 1st 2019
This is a follow-up from last month when we briefly introduced some basic changes to the Rules of Golf. There are 31 MAJOR CHANGES, this article will cover the 20 Must Know Rule changes for 2019, as highlighted by the R&A and the USGA.
Relief Area: The area where you must drop a ball when taking relief under a rule.
Firstly, to help with the understanding of the rule changes, here are some newly defined terms that can be found in the ‘definitions’ section of the rule book. Embedded: When your ball is in its own pitchmark made as a result of your previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground. General Area: The area of the course that covers all of the course except for the other four defined areas: (1) The teeing ground of the hole you are playing, (2) all penalty areas, (3) all bunkers, (4) the putting green of the hole you are playing. *previously defined as ‘Through the Green’. Penalty Area: An area from which relief with a one stroke penalty is allowed if your ball comes to rest there. There are yellow penalty areas = two relief options (previously known as a yellow water hazard) There are red penalty areas = three relief options (previously known as a red lateral water hazard)
20 MUST KNOW RULE CHANGES:
2. Measure the area in which to drop your ball with the longest club in your bag (except a putter) When taking a drop, the size of the relief area will always be measured by the longest club in your bag, except your putter, whether one or two club lengths, depending on the type of relief being taken. However, you don’t need to actually use your longest club for this and then go back to your bag to get a pitching wedge, for example. If the longest club in your bag for the round is 43 inches then a club length is 43 inches for you for that round. 3. You must now drop in and play from the relief area. When taking a drop, you must always have a reference point. From there you will measure the one or two club lengths in which to drop. That radius will be your “relief area” that the ball must stay within; if it rolls out then it should be re-dropped a second time before then being placed.
1. You must now drop your ball from knee height (NOT shoulder height). A simple one to understand and to do. The aim is that dropping from a lower height will result in less re-drops from the ball bouncing and rolling too far away.
4. When dropping back on the line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point. If taking relief by going back in line with the flag (example: penalty area or unplayable ball), you must identify a mark on that line to measure your ‘relief area’; once that mark is identified and the ball is dropped you cannot play if the ball rolls nearer the hole and out in front of your measured “relief area”. *connected to point 3 above. 5. Time to search – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes) Search time reduced from 5 to 3 minutes. As before, your time starts when the player, his/ her caddie, partner or partner’s caddie begins to search for it. The reason for the change is
6. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty. A fair change to this rule that there is now NO PENALTY if you move your ball whilst searching for it. If moved, the ball should be replaced. If the spot is unknown you must estimate it, and when placing the ball try to recreate the lie of the ball as much as possible.
16. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings. Despite the rules in a bunker being relaxed (as 15 above) you STILL CANNOT touch the sand with your club near the ball or make a practice swing.
7. No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke. (Good news for those with the dreaded golfing yips…)
17. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but ‘embedded’ means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground) This rule has been extended to all ‘General Areas’ that include both the fairway and the rough. This has been introduced as an embedded ball lying anywhere is not considered part of the normal challenge of playing golf.
8. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke. If your ball hits you, your bag, your cart (equipment) after making a stroke you must then just play the ball as it lies for your next stroke. 9. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole. You can now choose to have the flagstick left in as well as attended or removed. Your intention must be clearly stated before putting, you cannot change your intentions once the stroke has been made and the ball is in motion.
12. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position – replace ball on original spot. If your ball is moved by an outside agency such as wind or any other natural forces such as a slope then: If you had not marked your ball yet then play from its new position. If you had marked the ball and replaced it then replace the ball back on the same spot.
18. Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for TWO penalty strokes. By going back as far as you want in line with the flag outside of the bunker, but this will cost you two strokes. Previously you could only drop outside of the bunker by going back to where you played your last stroke for only a one stroke penalty, but that could have meant going back 150 yards, for example.
15. In bunkers you can remove loose impediments. The rules have been relaxed to allow you to remove leaves, twigs, stones or any other loose impediments in a bunker. So no longer
Recommendations are: • To be more prompt in preparing for and making each stroke i.e. BE READY • To be more prompt in moving from one stroke to the next i.e. WALK FASTER • To be more prompt in moving to the next teeing ground after completing a hole i.e. CLEAR THE GREEN IMMEDIATELY When it is your turn to play: • 40 seconds is the maximum recommended time per stroke. This time begins when you are free to play without any interference or distractions
I appreciate the above can be a lot to take in all at once, please take some time to digest just a couple of the changes at a time. At each Club event you will be given the list of these 20 key changes as a reminder for you whilst on course; the new rule books, which I’m pleased to say have been simplified, and now include diagrams to make easier to understand are also readily available at the Club. Please don’t worry or stress about the new changes s this is a great opportunity to grasp a better understanding of the modernised rules of golf and we, at the Club, are here to help you to do that.
13. Penalty areas replace water hazards and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough. A big change that now allows us to act the same in a penalty area as we can on the fairway or rough as listed above. No longer do we need to panic about grounding the club or touching or moving anything. 14. You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area. The number 95% has been introduced in line with being ‘known or virtually certain’ that your ball is in a penalty area. If there is still a small doubt, the ball is deemed as lost.
20
Playing out of turn: • Is allowed in stroke play; you are now allowed to play out of turn in a SAFE and responsible way to save time…also known as Ready Golf! • In matchplay, you can play out of turn IF AGREED between both players to save time.
10. Spike marks and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired If your ball lies ON or OFF the putting green you are entitled to repair any damages such as spike marks, shoe marks, animal damage, turf plugs and seams of cut turf. The fixing and repairs must be done promptly and must not improve the line of play beyond the repair of the initial damage. 11. Accidentally move the ball on the putting green? There is no penalty and the ball is replaced. If there is any accidental movement of the ball or ball marker by yourself or anyone else then simply replace the ball or ball marker with NO PENALTY.
20. Pace of Play – it is recommended that you have no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke (and usually you should be able to play quicker than that) and READY GOLF in stroke play is encouraged. The rules now emphasise a prompt pace of play. The rule reminds golfers that their pace of play will affect how long it takes others to play their rounds, both in their group and those in the groups behind.
hys
do you need to check the back of a scorecard for the local rules to see if stones are movable obstructions in bunkers.
Rules By R
obviously to speed up play but, based on the assumption that if a ball is to be found, it will normally be found sooner rather than later.
RULES NIGHT… We look forward to announcing soon a date for a Dubai Golf rules night and we hope to have the expertise of European Tour referees who will be here for the upcoming OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic. More information coming soon. 19. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance. Therefore no assistance can be given with a player’s alignment by anyone. The player must rely on his own skill to get this correct.
If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply Email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

Exercise Tip of the Month by Chris Mallet
The Deadlift
Strengthening the muscles in the legs, glutes, hips, back, core and shoulders are important, no matter what sport you play. With greater strength comes the ability to generate greater power. If you want to increase how far you can drive that golf ball from the tee then the deadlift can certainly be a solution to any ‘sticking point’ regarding your current level of progress.
The quickest way to start feeling better is to give your digestive system a rest and give it a helping hand, and by doing this you will rid your system of the built-up toxins that are making you feel sluggish. Simultaneously, you will improve the function of the digestive tract allowing more nutrients to be absorbed into your system, thus providing you with more energy.
So how do you perform this exercise? Start by standing with feet shoulders width apart and the bar touching your shins. Hold the bar with an overhand grip, just wider than shoulder width. Set the shoulders by trying to ‘break the bar in half’ and brace the core. Keep the arms and back straight as you drive from the legs, starting in a half squat position with the hips above knee level up to a standing position, chest high, shoulders back and squeezing through the glutes. To understand more about how to incorporate this exercise into your programme come and visit me at Fit Lab.
A simple strategy to follow would be the following:

GETTING OVER THE HOLIDAY SEASON BY ALAN WALTERS
This is widely regarded in the fitness industry as the one exercise that recruits the most number of muscles in one movement. The ultimate functional exercise that, when performed correctly, can have extremely positive performance based results for athletes and casual gym users alike.
I am sure that, much like myself, everyone has enjoyed the holiday season and that you capped it off with a big New Year’s Eve celebration leaving you feeling somewhat jaded, to say the least. In the quest to make yourself feel better, more healthy or even lose weight, it may be tempting to jump on board with one of the fad diets that seem to be ever present and far too well advertised around this time of year. They promise fitness model looks and boundless levels of energy when, in reality, this will simply not happen as they are unrealistic, unsustainable and often make people very unhappy. So as a quick tip - give fad diets a wide berth (excuse the pun) The reason you are not quite feeling your spritely self is because, as you well know, you overloaded your body with toxins and poor quality food to levels of excess.
For 5-7 days Have a smoothie for breakfast (Should mainly be fruit based, mixed with either spinach or kale, and coconut water or a nut milk); the main thing is to make sure it tastes good. For lunch or dinner, soups are easy to digest and help to kick start the digestive tract. For lunch or dinner have a main meal of whatever you want, but ideally this should contain plenty of vegetables but no breads, pastas, or red meat. For snacks try to stick to soups, smoothies and/or fruit. Ensure that you aren’t starving yourself and that you enjoy the food you are having. Within the week you should find both your energy levels and healthy feelings returning.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is best known for reducing the effects of lymphoedema, but it is also proven to produce a positive effect on skin rejuvenation such as healing ulcers, eczema, scars and burns, reducing bloating and swelling from different causes (i.e. post surgery), healing ligaments and sprains, and in any situation where abnormal fluid build-up occurs in the body tissues. MLD is an advanced therapy administered by MLD trained & certified massage therapist Louisa Grosvenor in which gentle rhythmic pumping techniques are used to stimulate the lymphatic system to encourage the removal of excess fluid and waste products and increase its

encouraging the drainage of the lymph and, in turn, boosting the body’s immune system. It can assist with swelling, pain, sinus problems and scar tissue. MLD encourages the body to naturally detox, resulting in clearer skin, reduction in puffiness around tired eyes and improved skin tone. MLD is particularly effective in:
rate of absorption from the surrounding tissues. The Vodder method uses a unique technique, by moving the skin in a rhythmic pattern, applying very light pumping movements to stimulate the contractions of the lymph vessel system. This method was discovered in the 1930s by French physician Dr Emil Vodder, who started to practice gentle massage over swollen lymph glands, only to later discover that this treatment helped to reduce lymph oedema through enhancing lymph flow. MLD is a very light and gentle massage, using a range of specialised rhythmic pumping techniques to move the excess fluid and stimulate the lymphatic vessels, helping to drain the excess fluid away from the swollen area. Why have MLD therapy? The primary function of the lymphatic system is to protect our body from infection and disease. So, having regular MLD helps to enhance this, and therefore helps to reduce the number of colds and infections one may contract. Lymphatic massage improves your overall health and can be used to assist with your body’s natural ability to heal itself by
• Reducing primary and secondary lymphoedema, the latter sometimes arising after surgery. • Helping chronic conditions such as sinusitis, arthritis, scleroderma, acne, rosacea and other skin conditions • Relieving migraines. • Relieving fluid congestion: swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes, water retention. • Pre and post operative • Reducing oedema and fluid build up • Detox • Digestive disorders and IBS by calming inflammation and irritation. • Promoting the healing of wounds and burns. Can improve the appearance and texture of old scars. • Stress, anxiety, tension • Swelling associated with pregnancy Manual lymphatic drainage is nothing like a regular massage. After a session of MLD you will feel relaxed and at ease and it will also help to boost the immune system. FROM THE KITCHEN OF CHEF NICHOLAS CUOMO This month we have something different from Chef Nicholas...not recipes, but reading recommendations - books by chefs about chefs and what goes on behind the scenes in their kitchens.
Assembling a crack team of psychiatrists, behavioural economists, food scientists and dietitians, the Angry Chef unravels the mystery of why sensible, intelligent people are so easily taken in by the latest food fads, making brief detours for an expletive-laden rant. At the end of it all you’ll have the tools to spot pseudoscience for yourself and the Angry Chef will be off for a nice cup of tea – and it will have two sugars in it, thank you very much.
After twenty-five years of ‘sex, drugs, bad behaviour and haute cuisine’, chef and novelist Anthony Bourdain decided to tell all. From his first oyster in the Gironde to his lowly position as a dishwasher in a honky-tonk fish restaurant in Provincetown; from the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop the Rockefeller Center to drug dealers in the East Village, from Tokyo to Paris and back to New York again, Bourdain’s tales of the kitchen are as passionate as they are unpredictable, as shocking as they are funny.
When Marco Pierre White’s mother died of a brain haemorrhage when he was just six years old, it transformed his life. Soon, his father was urging him to earn his own keep and by sixteen he was working in his first restaurant. He would then go on to learn from some of the best chefs in the country, such as Albert Roux, Raymond Blanc and Pierre Koffmann. He survived the intense pressure of hundred-hour weeks in the heat of the kitchen, developed his own style, and struck out on his own. At Harveys in Wandsworth, which he opened in 1987, he developed a reputation as a stunning cook and a rock ‘n’ roll sex god of the kitchen. But he was also a man who might throw you out of his restaurant, and his temper was legendary, as younger chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal would find out when they worked for him. He eventually opened several more restaurants, won every honour going and then realised that it still wasn’t enough. This book tells that astonishing story, taking the reader right into the heat of the kitchen with a sharp-edged wit and a sizzling pace that will fascinate anyone brave enough to open the pages of this book and enter his domain.

Another year went out with a bang at the Golf Club lawns; it was indeed a ‘Have the Time of your Life Night’ which was even more successful than the previous year’s ‘Make it a Thriller Night’ so every year we are raising our standards. I am delighted to say that my team and I received amazing feedback after this excellent night when we managed to host 1400 guests and which was sold out by the first week of December 2018 Christmas Day was also one of the busiest we have seen at the Club, hosting 560 guests across three outlets for lunch, in addition to 260 turkey take-aways.
It’s a great pleasure to have you all back for the second half of the golf season at Emirates Golf Club! The weather is getting chilly which is the perfect time for the heaters on the terrace. We are eager to surprise you, and we welcome you to enjoy the sunny afternoons and chilly evenings on our terraces in Jones, Carine and Spike Bar! We recently launched our crazy/tasty promotions in Spike Bar and Jones the Grocer, welcoming more and more guests and members each week! Make sure to pass by and try these amazing themed nights:

Go Organic Me
All juices contain organic ingredients and are certified by the organic governing body. Fruits and vegetables are cold-pressed into each bottle using a hydraulic press to extract a substantial amount of vitamins and minerals with minimal oxidation, then High Pressure Processing (known as HPP) is used to eliminate potentially harmful pathogenic bacteria. This process entails placing a bottle of juice into a chamber of cold water and applying sufficient pressure high enough to eliminate these bacteria.

CONARES GOLF SOCIETY LEAGUE December 2018 Results
On 1st December, S2B took on the Filipino Golfers who are currently leading the Conares Golf Society League which was always going to be a tough match. Neal White and David Pinder lost their first ever match together 2&1 despite shooting 38 points which would win most games! Peter Donaldson and his compatriot Andrew Fullerton sadly also lost in a 5&4 defeat. The next match is on the 12th of January against FIGME Golf Society when two wins are much needed to keep us in the qualifying spot!

In last month’s issue I ran this photo of the Tracey Trophy for the Saturday crowd match against the Dogfight group. I automatically thought this was the Dogfight group at the Creek Golf & Yacht Club as that is what their Saturday crowd is called. However, the Dogfight at our Club is actually the Indian group of Ishu, Vipen, Dilip etc so apologies to all for that and congratulations to the Dogfight group at Emirates Golf Club for securing their victory against the Saturday crowd and winning the Tracey Trophy.
