The UEFA EUROS Football Championship runs from 11th June - 11th July with games taking place at 5pm, 8pm and 11pm. Majlis Course Progress The re-build of the Majlis greens is well under way. As of 1st June, all greens have been cored out, drainage inserted and the 10cm gravel level applied. The root zone mix is the next stage followed by the shaping process. The new grass, from Georgia in the USA, will arrive in two batches, firstly on the 13th June followed by the second delivery on 20th June. The team then plant the sprigs and grow-in will commence. Hole 1 – 68% increase in surface area

The Omega Dubai Desert Classic Championship Tees on holes 13 and 14 have also found a new home. These new positions have shallowed the angle of the dogleg and added length to the holes for the world’s best to try out at the next tournament.

Member parking As mentioned in my detailed response to the members’ survey we are planning to segregate an area of the main car park and reserve for members only. In the near future, we will send instructions on how to register your number plate through the member zone or the Viya App. Golf Operations Thank you to those members who played in the Member/ Colleague Scramble on Wednesday 26th May. Twice a year we host this scramble tournament seeing 4-ball teams comprised of two members and two EGC colleagues. This past month saw a record turnout of 120 players, resulting in a fabulous day enjoyed by all. Due to continued Covid challenges many colleagues haven’t seen families in person for over 2 years, so days like this are very important as helps boost team moral so thank you to the 60 members who participated. I would also like to congratulate the Golf Operations team headed by Cian Hurley who recently won Golf Operations Team of the Year in the 59-club awards. This is a mystery shopper program across golf clubs within the region. Further to my note on 11th May, it appears that EGC members are finding good availability across the four Dubai Golf courses. Since closing on 2nd May, we have had 12 weekend or public holidays and the average rounds recorded by EGC members across DCGYC and JGE is 146 per day. Appreciate you may not always be able to find your preferred tee time but please make use of the waitlists at each club.

Swimming Pool Closure Please be informed the Swimming Pool will close from 10th – 26th July for annual maintenance and extended works to tiles and flooring. During the closure EGC members can benefit from your reciprocal access to JGE and Dubai Creek.

Dear Members, It was an absolute honour for our Lady Captain, Naima and me to celebrate our Captains Dinner at Carine this past month. It is special to spend time with past Captains along with those that will be shortly moving into “office” It is a beautiful tradition that has been well established within the Emirates Golf Club since its early years. With the “sands of time” running short for Naima and me, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Abdullfattah Sharaf and Amarjeet Radia every success in their year of Captaincy and congratulate Campbell Steedman and Marivi Arias on their appointment as Captains for the 2022 and 2023 season. There is no doubt that the club and its membership are in safe hands for the future. It has always been somewhat “mandatory” to offer some advice for those coming into office. In my Captain Speech at the dinner, I offered only one piece of advice - embrace the Captaincy as a position of “service” rather than a position of “privilege” - I hope that I have been faithful to my advice. My sincere thanks to all that have served on The Members Consultative Committee and Handicap Committee this season. It certainly has been a “full” year in respect of the work done over the season. Thank you to all for your support.

CAPTAIN’S MESSAGE

With work fully underway now on the Majlis, we are all awaiting the end product with much anticipation. It is going to restore the Majlis to the very pinnacle of world golf venues. I look forward to, in a couple of months, heading out onto the 1st tee again. I would encourage all members to share in the occasional tours being taken out on the course to keep members up to date on the developments and progress of the rebuild. In conclusion, the season-ending members/ colleagues scramble was held on the 26th of May 2021. We, as members, are very blessed to have all the colleagues that we have within our club. To all our colleagues, thank you so much for all you do. You are all an exceptional group of people. Congratulations to all winner on the day, and shall any one of us ever forget the almost “hole in one” from the lovely Tess Gaona. Tess, I have no idea how that did not go in!

Dear Members, I remember the Oscars as if it were yesterday. All the ladies of the EGC making looking glamorous in their dresses. The photobooth at the entrance was packed as if Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt were standing there – actually it was my sons Nasser and Hamdan. The champagne flowed all evening and the food so well prepared by our F&B team. Soon after my speech, Amarjeet, Jayshree and Christiane conducted the cutest, funniest and most thoughtful interview between Oprah (Jayshree) and Frankie my Frenchie (Amarjeet). I’ll always remember that, and I hope someone caught it all on video. Speaking of video, a round of applause to my belly dancers Martha, Najla, Maura, Sulafa and Yanna whom I will hire for my next party. It was kind of a lovely coincidence that since the Members Party did not happen, the Oscars was sort of a replacement. The Club was super generous doing 3 events on their account without charging us ladies (my Monday, member day and majlis closer) We hosted the last monthly medal on May 3rd, congrats to

irrigation water going into the bunkers at night and causing the compaction. The bunkers, like the greens, have no drainage so the water just stays there and can solidify, which causes the hardness. Over the years, we have tillered the bunkers weekly to relieve this compaction but now is the time to add some drainage so that we can keep them to a better standard throughout the season. First, we will remove the sand and mark out in the sub base the best place for the drainage pipe. It’s so important to make sure there is an exit strategy for the water to go out from the bunker. This is done with functional drainage pipe so the bunker can maintain excellent playability. The drainage pipe will more than likely link to the greens drainage outlet so it drains to the low point or lake if available. After the drainage pipe is installed, we then add a layer of gravel so that it does not get contaminated, very similar practice we do for the greens drainage. The sand is then returned to the bunker and tested to make sure all is working well. Al Naboodah Contracting and Golf East Matthew Perry Dear Members, The Majlis greens rebuild is now underway and the contractors have been on site since Sunday 2nd May. Please find below a few early photographs of the work completed so far. In addition, in order to keep you up to date with the project the Majlis starter hut will be open daily and the latest information and updates will be displayed. I would also like to give you some information on the bunker project that we are undertaking during the closure. Bunker Project We are all aware that we have had issues with the bunkers over the years, the main being compaction and how hard they can get during times of the day. This is mainly down to the

The contractor for the project, as previously announced, is Al Naboodah Contracting, which has great experience in building golf courses within the region. The company was also our contractor when the Faldo course and Dubai Creek was built in the past. The contractor has also brought in Golf East to assist in this project. Golf East, headed up by Gary Ashfield, has been part of many golf course projects throughout the world, some of which are mentioned below. Golf East’s knowledge of golf course construction is vast and Gary even worked on the Majlis course shaping back in 1987! •

Terry Baller Design It was important for Emirates Golf Club to make sure we did not lose the original design of the Majlis course and change too much to the greens. There are some issues with certain greens, such as 4 and 9, where the green slopes too much to the water and these will need to be adjusted. The decision was made to find a designer who had great experience in greens reconstruction and being able to maintain the original design. The projects that Terry has completed include the Faldo design at Emirates Golf Club along with signature courses in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mauritius, Fiji, Australia, Canada and the United States. While on site, Terry was able to get a great look at the greens and the complexes to see what would work best for them. The factors that he needed to take into account was where the drainage of the greens could be improved and how the tie in to the existing bunkers could be enhanced without affecting the original design.

Terry has since come back with the adjustments of sizes to enlarge the existing greens. This will help with more pin positions and being able to spread wear throughout the year. The design of the greens will be displayed in the Majlis starter hut so you can understand the increases from the current layout. Polyclean and Atlas Turf International The grass we are getting for the greens will again be Tif Eagle Bermuda. This grass is widely used in the region and around the world and will come from the state of Georgia, USA where it was developed. This is being purchased through the local distributor Polyclean, which subsequently sources it from Atlas Turf International. These two companies have supplied grass to a whole host of courses in the region and around the world including The Trump International, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Hills, JA The Resort, Al Zorah Golf Club, Arabian Ranches The grass sprigs will be delivered in June when the greens construction is completed. It will be air freighted from Georgia and then planted on the greens. Kind Regards, Matthew Perry Director of Agronomy Dubai Golf

Dear Members, In this month’s article, I would like to take a step back and look at a broader perspective regarding the Rules of Golf. Rule 1 is often overlooked in the R&A Rules of Golf Manual, however it is actually the starting point from which the game of golf itself should be played, both competitively and casually. Rule 1 falls under Part 1 of the R&A Rules of Golf Manual, titled ‘Fundamentals of the Game’. Rule 1, in many ways, simply outlines the basics of the sport of golf, however its most important value is the precedent it sets for the overall approach to the game and mindset a golfer should adopt, when learning and playing the game.

These drops can be broken down into three main categories as follows: 1. Yellow Penalty Areas These are defined by yellow painted lines or yellow stakes. In this scenario you have two options; A) Play again or B) Drop back behind and on line with the pin 2. Red Penalty Areas These are defined by red painted lines or red stakes. In this scenario you have three options; A) Play again or B) Drop back behind and on line with the pin or C) Take relief of two clublengths (no nearer the hole) 3. Unplayable Ball This occurs when the golfer’s ball is deemed not possible to play and a penalty drop must be taken. In this scenario you have three options; A) Play again or B) Drop back behind and on line with the pin or C) Take relief of two clublengths (no nearer the hole) A useful memory aid is as follows: Yellow = AB - A (Again) & B (Behind) Red = ABC - A (Again) & B (Behind) & C (Clublengths) Unplayable = ABC – A (Again) & B (Behind) & C (Clublengths)

SCHOOL OF RULES

*Interesting Facts: • As stated in the rules, “your ball is in a penalty area when any part of it lies on or touches the ground or anything else inside the edge of the penalty area, or is above the edge or any other part of the penalty area”. • A player may always choose to play their ball when it is in a penalty area. They may also now ground their club in a penalty area, as long as they do not improve their lie in doing so. • The player may stand inside a penalty area when playing a ball that lies outside that penalty area, including, where relevant, when just after taking relief from that penalty area. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to me at churley@dubaigolf.com. If you enjoyed the article and found it helpful, feel free to drop me an email at the above address, quote the code SORACH, and be entered into a prize draw! Thanks Cian Hurley

Cardio over summer

It’s starting to heat up outside and depending on your working hours or daily commitments, it may be difficult to get outside for a run in some of the cooler (or less hot) hours of the day. At FitLab we have the Cardio Zone equipped with treadmills, bikes, rowers, ellipticals, ski ergs, air bikes and steppers, so you can keep up your cardio fitness training over the summer. Sometimes training on the machines can feel boring and a bit like a hamster on a wheel. Here are some things to keep in mind to make things a bit more interesting: 1. Monitor your heart rate. This gives you something to keep an eye on throughout the duration of your training. Whether you are doing low intensity continuous training or interval training, its good to track heart rate to ensure you are working at the right intensity. 2. Music/Netflix/Podcast. Especially if you are doing low intensity long duration workouts, there’s nothing wrong with watching or listening to something to help pass the time. Just ensure the workout is being done at the appropriate intensity.

Here are some ideas for your goals which can be achieved inside the cardio zone. •

Improving 12 minute run distance, how far can you get?

3 sets of 500m row, 2min rest between sets. Keep the slowest time as low as possible. How low can you keep the slowest time?

20 minute stepper. How high can you keep the resistance throughout the full 20 minutes?

15 minutes bike, 30s fast, 30s slow. How high can you keep the RPM (revolutions per minute) for 30s at a certain resistance level?

For many more ideas for your goals and how to keep fit over the summer, please get in touch with the team at FitLab. Michael Lancaster

Michael Lancaster

3. Have a goal. This is the most important part of any training. If you know what you are training for, you know why you are doing each particular workout, and that it will eventually lead to you accomplishing your goals. RECREATION
