Dear Members The month of October was extremely busy at the club on and off the golf course with many highlights including the triumph of Bronte Law in the Dubai Moonlight Classic presented by EGA over our Faldo course.

Dubai Moonlight Classic presented by EGA Congratulations to Bronte Law for triumphing in the third edition of the Dubai Moonlight Classic over the Faldo course with a 54-hole tally of 15-under par. The tournament was also supported by Truckers Dubai on the Thursday and Friday with an estimated 2000 plus guests each day. It was great to see so many members in attendance and I hope you enjoyed the experience with your family if you ventured down.

Majlis Course As mentioned in my last update the opening weekend was a great success with 775 members playing over the four days. The Mixed Season opener, on the 8th of October, was also a great success with 152 members playing across the two courses. Congratulations to captains Abdulfattah and Amarjeet for successful nervy drive-ins! The Majlis greens, now 4.5 months old, are progressing nicely and settling into the demands of regular cutting, rolling and golfing traffic! The greens, initially after opening were hurt from the wear of play and struggled a little to adapt to the amount of cutting and rolling. The first morning closures have now taken place, on 10th October some much needed sand was added which is always difficult to do with no gaps or closures. The greens responded excellently after this care and maintenance and now at the end of October are very healthy which is a great position to be in going into the cooler months. Note, when the temperatures do drop the plant naturally slows in growth which means speeds will also increase. Please keep repairing your pitch marks!

Pink Ball Golf Day The Ladies Pink Ball Competition sponsored by HSBC in Association with Al Jalila Foundation with Brest Friends was a great success. Congratulations to the ladies’ section led by Amarjeet and Marivi. A big thank you to all the sponsors and to all members who bought raffle tickets and made donations. Once again, an incredible amount was raised for such a worthy cause, more than Aed 94,000.

Al Dobowi Emirates Mixed Amateur Open The 28th staging of the Al Dobowi Emirates Mixed Amateur Open was a very close contest with Alex Rodriguez and Nicsha Russouw clinching the title after a sudden death playoff. A big thank you to Surender Kandhari and the team from Al Dobowi for their tremendous support of Emirates Golf Club over such a long period. Be sure to enter the Hankook Greensomes in April 2022, one of the most popular open events in the region. Can Alex and Nicsha make it a double!? CLUB MANAGER’S REPORT

Member Parking The Members parking seems to have been a success so far so thank you for your feedback on this area over the past season. This was one of the ‘big wins’ following the last members survey where the parking challenge was a frequent complaint. In addition, the members driving range, at the far end, is now fully operational so hopefully you are enjoying this improved offering. We also have installed 170 new GPS units on the cart fleet, note new carts will also arrive at the end of December.

Tee time Bookings & Tournaments in November Following the closure to the Faldo course between 24th – 29th October for the Ladies European Tour event, further closures to Dubai Golf courses will follow in November. Dubai Creek is closed from 31st October to 6th November for the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship. Fire Course is closed from 31st October to 21st November for the Aviv Dubai Championship and DPWTC. Earth Course is closed from 7th – 22nd November for the DP World Tour Championship. During these closures Dubai Creek and JGE members will have a 7-day booking window to play at Emirates Golf Club so please, when possible, look to book between 8-11 days in advance. Please also ensure you add your name to our waitlists if you are unsuccessful in securing your preferred tee time, as our Reservations Team continue to manage the countless changes and amendments to the tee sheets on a daily basis. Note during the 15-day Majlis closure in January for the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic (SDDC), the reciprocal benefits of EGC members will be enhanced also.

2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic You may have seen that recently the first players confirmed to play in the SDDC have been announced and include defending champion Paul Casey, the Open Champion Collin Morikawa and fan favorite Sergio Garcia. The iconic event on the European Tour schedule has become part of the Rolex Series for the first time. From 2022, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic will be part of the Rolex Series, the European Tour’s premium category of events, with a prize fund of $8million and it will take place from January 27-30 2022 over the Majlis course.

Festive Period and New Year The festive brochure including all Christmas and New Years Eve events was released on 27th October to the membership. We expect the club to be popular with bookings throughout the holiday period so if you wish to join any of the events or order your Turkey then please make the necessary booking/s with the team as soon as possible Thank you for your support and enjoy the cooler winter climate!

Golf Course Etiquette We need your help! “As of 5th November, 64 members and 15 visitors have breached one of the below and received a written warning” As the Golf Course Maintenance Team strive to provide the best playing conditions for members and guests, we urgently need your help from a golfing etiquette perspective. Over the opening weekend with almost 100% member play the standard of golfing etiquette has been woeful to say the least On Saturday 2nd October I was fortunate to play the Majlis course as a last-minute replacement. The below episode and the need to look after our courses will result in a much stronger stance against etiquette breaches. On Saturday I was on the 9th tee and witnessed a member of the club play a bunker shot from in front of the first green. He then proceeded to leave the bunker with no intention of raking crossing his mind. He proceeded to the green. Sadly his 3 fellow golfing members also thought this was perfectly acceptable behavior and said nothing. I had to walk over to the group and request they raked. A sad experience from 4 long time members. So, the time has come. For a breach of the below etiquette, witnessed by EGC staff and management, a member will be given one written warning. A second offence will result in a temporary suspension of playing privileges at the club. For example, the above incident would result in a 7-day suspension. Subsequent breaches will result in further action. Thank you for your support. Etiquette Areas to be Monitored: •

Filling in Divots on the fairway and in the rough. Sand refill stations located by green 7 and tee 12 on the Majlis and drinks stations on the Faldo course

Raking bunkers

Repairing Pitch marks

Slow play. Basic disregard for an instruction given by a marshal or Golf Operations management. E.g., refusal to call a group through having been instructed by an EGC team member

Cart Etiquette – Please do not drive in sand areas or close to greens. Please keep carts outside areas identified by ropes and small stakes, these restrictions are to manage the wear of the golf courses.

Thank you for your support and for caring for your golf courses. CLUB MANAGER’S REPORT

CAPTAINS DAY

The 2021/2022 season has started with super enthusiasm and it was great to see such a large turnout for all the tournaments we hosted in October. The Season openers for both the Ladies and the Mixed Open had a fantastic turnout. The Mixed Open was actually played over the two courses. Another success was the pink ball charity event where we managed to get sponsors such as HSBC, MMI , Marati etc who contribute to this worth cause and raised over AED 90,000 for the Al Jalila Foundation! Kudos to all the lady members for participating and making this event a memorable one. Thank you to the Carine restaurant who always allow us to host the lunch. This annual event has gained tremendous support over the years and one hopes will continue to do so. The Moonlight Classic was a huge success and congratulations to the winner, Bronte Law who shot a magnificent round to win on the final day. The impressive finish was all under the floodlights of the Faldo course. The setting of the hospitality stand organized by the club was superb and the overall ambiance and views of the 18th fairway and greens was as sight for sore eyes. We now look forward to the November tournaments ! Amarjeet Radia Club Lady Captain LADY CAPTAINS MESSAGE

Manoj Kapur I am a Chartered Accountant and have had a Banking Career for over 35 Years. Presently I am a Managing Director with Bank J Safra Sarasin Asset Management (Middle East) in the DIFC and previously worked with Lloyds Bank and HSBC. Interests are sports and in particular Golf and Yoga Married with 2 grown up children and both play Golf.

Noboru Sekiguchi Noboru Sekiguchi is the Consul-General of Japan in Dubai & the Northern Emirates. In 2020, he was assigned to the post in July and started his duty at Dubai in August, and subsequently became a member of the Emirates Golf Club in September. He was born in the US (Philadelphia) and moved to Japan at the age of two. Since then, he had been raised in Japan. He joined the Japanese foreign service in 1991, and took various posts including the Private Secretary to Foreign Minister at the headquarters and stationed in New York (twice), London, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok, besides Dubai, - all of them are golfer’s paradises luckily - for the overseas posting as a career diplomat. He started playing golf in New York in 1994 and soon fell in love with golf. Now, golf is the most favourite pastime for him. He thinks he is good at hitting with a driver but needs to improve short games including putting. He is married to Hiromi with a son. ” Sabine Choudry I’m originally from Germany. My studies took me to the Scotland where I was introduced to the game golf through Strathclyde University beautiful 9-hole golf course overlooking Loch Lomond. The fresh air, breathtaking scenery and beautiful hilly fairways got me hooked to the sport immediately. After finishing my studies, I moved to London but with a hectic career in advertising, unfortunately I didn’t get much time to play golf but that’s where I met my loving husband and we got married. His work brought us to Dubai in 2008 and my only condition to move to Dubai was that we take up a membership at Emirates Golf Club. We started off as leisure members in 2009 due to the waitlist and since 2010 have been weekday members. I joined the beginner’s group under the helm of vice-captain Jenny Ayres and since then have been regularly playing in the ladies’ tournaments. Our two children both born in Dubai, now aged 12 and 8 have also grown up with ECG as part of their life and are both part of the junior golf program. I am honoured to be given the opportunity to be part of the MCC and look forward to collaborating with fellow members and hope to contribute in a positive way. 12

Greens Renovation It’s been quite the first month of the Majlis course reopening. The greens have developed very well after the initial shock of opening and having people on them. As I mentioned in previous communications this grass is still very young and is going through its development stage and starting to mature as the weeks go by. The first 2 weeks the greens were very off colour and still getting use to the cuts, rolls, and traffic from players. I am very happy to say that they have matured and got use to all these aspects of what happens on golf courses day to day and starting to really grow well and showcase what great greens they will be for years to come. We still very much need to be mindful and keep close eye on them as they are a living thing and things do happen but being in a position now where they are looking much better playing better is a good place to be. The rest of the Majlis course as also had to get use to having carts and people on it as with it being closed for 5 months. The grass takes times to adapt and happy with progress as the weeks have passed. We have started to rope areas that have been worn a little too much to help the recovery and will re-open when things look better.

GREEN KEEPER’S UPDATE

The Faldo course has improved quite a lot over the month due temperatures improving and water supply getting back to normal. We had a big push before the Moonlight Classic which sets us up for the golf season and a good presenting golf course. We do have some ongoing work repairing any bare areas on the Faldo and will work on this throughout November.

The recent code of conduct drive has been a welcome addition and implore you to follow this code of conduct as this only benefits the golf course on a day-to-day basis. Repairing of pitch marks is vital for recovery on greens and filling divots with sand helps these areas become more even and recover quicker. Wishing you a the very best on the courses over the next month. Happy Golfing! Matthew Perry Golf Course Superintendent 28

Welcome to the Team Olivia Cooke Emirates golf club would like to welcome our new PGA professional Olivia Cooke. Olivia has dedicated her life to playing and learning the game of golf since the age of 4 when her dad introduced her to the game. Growing up in the UK and Dubai, she played many junior competitions, played for her county and won the ladies club championships at her home course in 2017. For the past few years has also played in numerous PGA events around the world, along with making a few appearances in the Rose Ladies Series in 2020-2021. Within her coaching, Olivia has gained a reputation for being able to plan and execute highly successful; junior lessons, school sessions, lessons for people with disabilities and individual adult lessons. Her coaching technique has been described as fun, interactive and simplistic. Tailoring each of her lessons to the individuals personality. As well as helping golfers of all skill levels and abilities achieve their golfing targets, she is also highly driven to grow the game and branch out to people who wouldn’t necessarily give the game a go. Along side Olivia’s day job as a golf coach, she is also a social media influencer with over 40,000 followers on instagram. With her following ever growing, she hopes to positively impact the game of golf by creating exciting and unique content for all of her followers. Ollie Ravenscroft I would just like to say a massive thank you for the warm welcoming I have felt from all members and staff. Instantly I can see the immense pedigree of this Golf Club and the lovely atmosphere that is created between members and staff. Brought up on Englands Golf Coast, I have been surrounded by Golf practice and culture from an early age. I became a member of Hillside Golf Club at age 11 and quickly found a strong passion for the game, helping me become a well respected amateur golfer. In 2020 I graduated from University in England receiving a BSc in Business Management. I have managed to gain a good amount of work experience in Golf so far with my previous employer being The Royal Birkdale Golf Club. I strongly look forward to my internship at this club hoping to develop my skills day by day and offer my best assistance, knowledge and previous experience to the Golf Operations team. I wish everyone the best of luck this season and I look forward to seeing you around. 30

School of Rules Dear Members,

I hope you have enjoyed being back on the Majlis Course since reopening! Please see below information regarding clarification on the Penalty Areas out on course: RULE 17 - PENALTY AREAS: Rule 17 is a specific Rule for penalty areas, which are bodies of water or other areas defined by the Committee where a ball is often lost or unable to be played. For one penalty stroke, players may use specific relief options to play a ball from outside the penalty area. We must first consider the rule, in order to understand it. Remember, water hazards are now called Penalty Areas, and we may have a Red Penalty Area or a Yellow Penalty Area. 17.1 Options for Ball in Penalty Area Penalty areas are defined as either red or yellow. This affects the player’s relief options (see Rule 17.1d). A player may stand in a penalty area to play a ball outside the penalty area, including after taking relief from the penalty area. When Ball Is in Penalty Area A ball is in a penalty area when any part of the ball: • Lies on or touches the ground or anything else (such as any natural or artificial object) inside the edge of the penalty area, or • Is above the edge or any other part of the penalty area.

If part of the ball is both in a penalty area and in another area of the course, see Rule 2.2c. Relief for Ball Not Found but in Penalty Area If a player’s ball has not been found and it is known or virtually certain that the ball came to rest in a penalty area: • The player may take penalty relief under Rule 17.1d or 17.2. • Once the player puts another ball in play to take relief in this way: • The original ball is no longer in play and must not be played. • This is true even if it is then found on the course before the end of the three-minute search time (see Rule 6.3b). But if it is not known or virtually certain that the ball came to rest in a penalty area and the ball is lost, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief under Rule 18.2.

DIAGRAM #1 RELIEF FOR BALL IN YELLOW PENALTY AREA 32

SCHOOL OF RULES

DIAGRAM #2 RELIEF FOR BALL IN RED PENALTY AREA 17.2 Options After Playing Ball from Penalty Area This part of the rule does not concern us as such, as it deals with the aftermath of playing from a penalty area. 17.3 No Relief under Other Rules for Ball in Penalty Area When a player’s ball is in a penalty area, there is no relief for: • Interference by an abnormal course condition (Rule 16.1), • An embedded ball (Rule 16.3), or • An unplayable ball (Rule 19). The player’s only relief option is to take penalty relief under Rule 17. But when a dangerous animal condition interferes with the play of a ball in a penalty area, the player may take either free relief in the penalty area or penalty relief outside the penalty area (see Rule 16.2b(2)). If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to me at churley@dubaigolf.com. If you enjoyed the article and found it helpful, feel free to drop me an email at the above address, quote the code SORACH, and be entered into a prize draw!

Recreation Dear Members, Dear Members, I hope this finds you all well and healthy. As the cooler weather has arrived, our outdoor Leisure areas are beginning to see an increase in activity. In line with this, we have re-introduced our popular Pool Pass offer for members and their guests. This is already proving a big hit and I hope to see many of you here enjoying the relaxing Pool atmosphere over the coming month. This time of year brings many questions regarding the temperature of the pool. During the heat of the Summer, we lower the temperature to around 28c, and for winter we maintain at around 29-30c. During this change, the temperature will seem different as factors such as outside temperature, humidity and time of day can affect it. This will level out as the cooler weather takes over. As I’m sure you will have noticed, Padel Tennis is growing across the city, non-more so than here at the club. The sport is moving at a fast pace and we would love as many members as possible to take it up and try it out. For this, we will be announcing a few member days very soon where you will be able to come and partake for free. We look forward to welcoming you! It was great to see the return of our Full Moon Yoga classes as well last month. On Wednesday 20th October, we hosted a fantastic Flow class on the front lawn of

the club where 65 ‘yogi’s’ attended. The backdrop, the feel of the club and the appearance of the moon (thank goodness) made it a lovely evening and we will running these regularly in conjunction with the Full Moon calendar. Please see some pictures of the event on this page. For the social media fans out there, please follow @fitlabdubai on Instagram to stay up to date on all things Leisure & Recreation across the clubs! As always, please come to myself with any questions or queries and I will be happy to assist. Many thanks, Dougie

Drop sets Drop sets are a technique where you can perform multiple sets of the same exercise, descending the weight each time to achieve greater fatigue and muscle growth potential, as well as overall training volume and time under tension. This is a very high intensity method of training, as you will reach failure multiple times (usually 2-5 times), so I would recommend using this technique on only your last set of the exercise, and depending on your level, only on 2 to 3 exercises per workout. On exercises such as barbell squats and bench press, this is very dangerous to do by yourself as you need to reach absolute failure, so ensure you have a spotter. On exercises such as dumbbell bicep curls or cable tricep push downs, its much easier to do by yourself as you simply pick up the lighter dumbbell or drop the pin in the cable machine. For example,

Dumbbell bicep curls 4 sets of 10@12kg (last set dropset) Last set (must reach failure) 10+@12kg, (drop weight to 10kg), max reps (drop weight to 8kg), max reps. Try it out for your next session, and if you need any extra information please stop by FitLab to speak with a trainer. Michael Lancaster RECREATION
