Dear Members

Welcome to the 2021-2022 season and great to see the Club busy over the past week as we look forward to the season ahead. The below update includes a number of topics, so please spend time to absorb the information, specifically our golfing members in relation to the opening weekend of the Majlis Course.

Majlis Course Re-opening Weekend (Thursday 30th September to Sunday 3rd October) It has been fabulous to see the excitement building around the Club for the pending re-opening of the Majlis course. The grow-in of the Majlis greens is going smoothly and thanks to the exceptional team effort of our Golf Course Maintenance department their condition is ahead of schedule. Preparation is now stepping up for Thursday 30th September. Please see pictures below of greens progress, in addition, all the bunker drainage work is complete. Following the five-month closure, along with high member demand to try out the new greens, it has been decided to allocate tee times over the first four days of opening, Thursday 30th September to Sunday 3rd October. It is our intention to ensure all members get the opportunity to play the Majlis during this long awaited reopening. Please see the guidelines below for these opening 4-days: •

Majlis Project As highlighted below, the project has gone very well and the preparation and detailed works are now stepping up for the grand re-opening on 30th September.

Course Care for 2021/2022 Season

As stated previously in the Club Update on 28th July, it is the management’s intention to consistently improve playing conditions all year round. Following a survey across other clubs in the region, it was noticeable that the Majlis and Faldo courses have no closure periods outside major maintenance. A number of clubs have half day or full day closures, post the busy weekend, in order for the Golf Course to recover and for the maintenance crew to have more access for essential work. In order for us to adopt this ‘best practice’ for next season the below will be implemented: •

From September 2021, the weekly ‘Ladies Morning’ will be moved from its traditional Monday morning, to a Tuesday morning.

From October 10th, morning closures will rotate between the Majlis and Faldo course alternating between a Sunday and Monday five-hour closure. For example if the Majlis course is scheduled for rest/maintenance the first tee time will be 11:40am off front and back nine (as opposed to 6:40am) and the Faldo will operate a 2-tee start to accommodate the demand for member play.

The Majlis course can experience 440 rounds over a weekend and the Faldo over 550 so post weekend care and attention will have long lasting positive consequences, specifically on the Majlis where the greens will be in their infancy (their fourth month of growth). The rest after a long weekend’s play is one advantage and secondly the GCM team will be empowered with undisturbed time to carry out essential maintenance. CLUB MANAGER’S REPORT

Member Car Parking

We are delighted to announce the Club will be operating a ‘Member-only’ car park effective from Sunday 12th September. You may recall my last update mentioned 100 reserved member spaces will be available and barrier activated by number plate recognition. An additional 86 spaces are available to members and guests in the first four rows closest to Bag Drop. Members arriving for early morning tee times and shot gun starts are also encouraged to park here to maximize member parking. Members can now register their car registration plate (maximum 2 per member) by visiting the Dubai Golf Member Zone or through the Viya App. In the Member Zone, please visit ‘Edit Profile’ section and complete the number plate details. In addition, the Club would like to update our records with an emergency contact number, for many members (especially single golfers) we do not have this information so please be encouraged to complete this section also.

Captains for the 2021-2022 Season This past week, on 1st September, witnessed a changing of the guard in terms of Club Captains. On behalf of all the members and EGC colleagues, a big thank you to Boyd and Naema for representing the club so admirably during the season. On 1st September, Abdulfattah Sharaf and Amarjeet Radia commenced their season as Club Captains. The season ahead, including a Golden Jubilee for the UAE and a transformed Dubai Desert Classic (see update below) promises to be full of excitement. Please give our incoming captains your full support! Campbell Steedman and Marivi Arias will support them as Vice Captains. 6

Winter Tournament Calendar Your support of the captains officially ‘tees off’ on Friday 8th October with our traditional season opening event. This is always a special occasion so please enter on-line or through Viya. Depending on entries, the tournament may include 9-holes on each course to maximize participation. Club Tournaments from 1st September Club Tournaments are popular amongst the membership throughout the season and the below changes will be introduced from 1st September: •

The majority of events will accept entries as a pair or on individual basis

Draws will be random

No draw will be sent out in advance of the tournament, just confirmation of participation

Handicap Committee actions last season

Sadly, last season, I witnessed first-hand the amount of time and effort the handicap committee had to give up making sure the tournaments at Emirates Golf Club are staged with the utmost integrity.

The committee consists of EGC members and Golf Operations management and I would like to thank them for their time and effort to make sure EGC tournaments are managed so professionally. The EGC Handicap Committee is the most active in the region.

Since July 2020, fourteen EGC members have had handicap reductions/freezes (based on tournament play) or suspensions for handicap manipulation and rules breaches. Two members are currently serving a 6-month handicap suspension so rest assured the committee are consistently acting in the best interest of its members to maintain the integrity of events for competitors and sponsors alike.

Emirates Golf Club Matchplay Championships Entries are also open on-line or through Viya for the annual Emirates Golf Club Matchplay championships. 2022 Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic You will no doubt have seen in the press last week the exciting news regarding the Dubai Desert Classic. The European Tour has announced Slync.io as the new title sponsor of the Dubai Desert Classic, with the iconic event becoming part of the Rolex Series for the first time in 2022. From 2022, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic will be part of the Rolex Series, the European Tour’s premium category of events, with a prize fund of $8 million. It will take place from January 27th - 30th 2022 2021 Dubai Moonlight Classic The 2021 Dubai Moonlight Classic is confirmed to take place at Emirates Golf Club from Wednesday 27 - Friday 29 October 2021 on the Faldo course. We look forward to welcoming you back on the Majlis Course and thank you for your continued support of the club.

Best Regards, Barney Coleman Club Manager Emirates Golf Club

Dear Members, It is with great pleasure I am writing my first letter to all of you and it is my privilege to be ladies captain of EGC during the 50th anniversary of the UAE. Having been a member of this prestigious club for over 20 years, I am thrilled to be taking an active part in developing a conducive and positive relationship. With all the members slowly returning, we are looking forward to an extremely busy season and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new members who have joined. I look forward to working with, Abdulfattah Sharaf and congratulate the incoming vice captains Marivi Arias and Campell Steedman. As all the lady members are aware, the club management has decided to move the ladies weekly tournament to Tuesday from Monday. The reason being, that this will give the courses a chance to recover after the hectic weekend traffic. As we, look forward to the re-opening of the Majlis course on the 1st of October, the club has arranged 4 days of special tee times to enable all members to get onto the course to enjoy the wonderful greens and fairways which have been worked upon over the last few four months. Thanks to all the teams at the club who were involved in recreating and restoring the Majlis back to its once pristine condition. October will certainly be a busy season with the EXPO opening , the IPL cricket and World cup for cricket being held in Dubai and we expect a lot more guest players at the club, as the weather improves. Last but not least, we are excited about all the forthcoming tournaments in October starting with the ladies season opener on the 5th of October, the mixed season opener on the 8th of October, followed by the Pink Ball Charity event on the 19th of October and finally the Ladies Dubai Moonlight Classic from the 24th to the 29th of October, which will now be sponsored by Rolex. The Pink Ball Tournament in particular is a charity event, whereby funds are raised for Breast Cancer and all the funds are donated to the Aljalila Foundation and hence I would appeal to one and all to generously contribute to this worthy cause. I look forward to the captaincy and the season ahead. Enjoy the Majlis Course. Amarjeet Radia Club Lady Captain 2021-22

Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The R&A announced that the 12th Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) is set to be held 3-6 November 2021 at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. Created in 2009, the AAC was established to further develop amateur golf in the Asia-Pacific region. The champion receives an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament and The Open, while the runners-up gain a place in Final Qualifying for The Open. The 2021 championship will mark the first edition held in the UAE, one of the APGC’s 42 member countries, and will join the numerous professional and amateur events Dubai hosts annually, including the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic and DP World Tour Championship. Taimur Hassan Amin, Chairman of the APGC, Fred Ridley, Chairman of the Masters Tournament, and Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said in a joint statement: “This year’s historic win at the Masters Tournament by Hideki Matsuyama, a two-time Asia-Pacific Amateur champion, underscored the importance of this event as a platform for the game’s development and rising talent in the region. We are grateful for the support of the Emirates Golf Federation and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, and we are committed to working closely with all involved to stage this year’s championship with responsible protocols in place so we can provide this life-changing opportunity safely to these deserving players. Dubai Creek’s Championship Course will enhance the tradition of world-class venues that have hosted this championship, and we look forward to showcasing the Asia-Pacific’s top-ranked amateurs this fall.” “After being part of the AAC for many years as a member of the APGC, we are excited to welcome this prestigious championship to the UAE for the first time,” said His Excellency Shaikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation. “This opportunity means a great deal to the Asia-Pacific’s many talented amateurs. We are honored to support the APGC, the Masters Tournament and The R&A in their efforts to conduct a safe event and advance our shared mission of spurring golf’s growth and development.” “The AAC annually brings together the leading amateurs from across the region, and the world, and we are proud to be selected by the Founding Partners as the host of this year’s event,” said Christopher May, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Golf. “Our Championship Course will present both a challenging and inspiring test for the players, and we look forward to highlighting their talent and contributing to the AAC’s impact on the game.” Over the AAC’s 12-year history, the championship has served as a springboard to some of the world’s top players today, including Matsuyama, a two-time AAC winner and 2021 Masters champion. Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic joins the European Tour’s Rolex Series in 2022 • 2022 prize fund will be $8 million • Event will take place from January 27-30 at Emirates Golf Club Thursday September 2, 2021; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; The European Tour today announced Slync.io as the new title sponsor of the Dubai Desert Classic, with the iconic event becoming part of the Rolex Series for the first time in 2022. Slync.io, the technology provider that is revolutionising the way global logistics works, becomes the title sponsor of the historic European Tour event played annually at the prestigious Emirates Golf Club, marking a pivotal moment in the 32-year history of the tournament. From 2022, the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic will be part of the Rolex Series, the European Tour’s premium category of events, with a prize fund of $8million. It will take place from January 27-30. This means the European Tour will now have back-to-back Rolex Series events in the Middle East in January with the tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Dubai part of the traditional ‘Desert Swing’ which attracts golf’s leading players. The Dubai Desert Classic was the European Tour’s first event in the Middle East region in 1989, cementing the Tour’s relationship with Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. That association has developed significantly in the intervening years, including through the introduction in 2009 of the European Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai, which from 2022 will now feature three out of five Rolex Series events in the Middle East, with the back-to-back tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Dubai at the start of the calendar year joined by the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai in November. The Dubai Desert Classic, which celebrated its 32nd edition earlier this year, has been won by some of golf’s great names, including Major Champions Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Jose Maria Olazábal, Mark O’Meara, Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau. Also in the winners’ circle over the past 32 years have been Ryder Cup stars Mark James, the inaugural champion in 1989, Eamonn Darcy, Colin Montgomerie, David Howell, Thomas Bjørn, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Stephen Gallacher and Paul Casey, the reigning champion. The tournament is now set for an even brighter future

with the support of Slync.io, which already has a strong foothold in professional golf through its support of its #TeamSlync Brand Ambassadors. They include: Justin Rose, Viktor Hovland, Erik van Rooyen, Jennifer Kupcho, Bernd Wiesberger, Sepp Straka, Albane Valenzuela, and Xinjin Zhang. Chris Kirchner, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Slync.io, said: “We are excited to partner with the European Tour and Rolex on the Dubai Desert Classic. Dubai is one of the great cities and a key player in global logistics. This event will be a great place for us to kick off our year with our customers and enjoy some world-class golf.” Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director – Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, said: “This is a very exciting time for the Desert Classic as we welcome Slync.io as title partner. Slync’s status as a leading global logistics technology provider will help to bring innovative ideas to the tournament and ensure it continues to evolve and grow.” “These changes will bring a host of benefits to Dubai and the tournament, in addition to offering our international fans enhanced coverage of the venue and players.” “We look forward to working with Slync.io and the rest of our sponsors to deliver a world-class event during a pivotal year for Dubai, when all eyes will descend on the city during the UAE’s 50th anniversary celebrations and the landmark hosting of Expo 2020 Dubai.” Keith Pelley, the European Tour’s Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome Slync.io as the new title sponsor of the Dubai Desert Classic, elevating the tournament to a new level.” “It is a real statement of intent that Slync’s first title sponsorship in golf will be as part of the Rolex Series, and we look forward to working together to build on the incredible history of the Dubai Desert Classic and to continue to showcase Dubai as a global sporting and trade hub. “Alongside the Genesis Scottish Open and the BMW PGA Championship, the three Rolex Series events in the Middle East mean our five premium tournaments in 2022 will be played at key times in the golfing calendar when the eyes of the world are on the European Tour.” “They will be incredible highlights in what promises to be a momentous 50th anniversary season for the European Tour.”

Dear Members, Well what a summer it has been for the Golf Course Maintenance department. The work that has been carried out on the Majlis Course is something we are very proud of and we cannot wait for members and guests to get out and play this iconic course again. I am going to explain a bit about the work that was carried out throughout the summer and what we can expect going forward into the golfing season. Matthew Perry

Greens Renovation I have talked about the process of the greens renovation in previous communications and now want to just show you how far we have come since we closed. As you know the old greens were dug out and extensions and shaping on the greens took place. The drainage and the gravel layer was added and then the root zone put on top and shaped to the plans that our designer Terry Baller had done. The first day of Sprigging was the 13th June, this is the day the sprigs flew in from Georgia, USA. They were put out on to the greens the same day, which

was a great achievement. The process of growing in then begins with us making sure the greens are watered every hour. The main aim is to keep them moist at this early stage so they don’t dry and possibly die. Over the coming months we start introduce fertilizing and then cutting as the plant gets stronger and starts to creep across the surface. This in combination with heavy topdressing to help levels and vertical mowing to help encourage more growth. As a result of all this we have seen the greens grow in very well and so happy with what has been achieved in the tight time frame we had.

The things to expect over the coming months is that the greens will get quite hard as we want them to develop and build organic matter. We won’t be needle tining as it will loosen the surface too much. The ball roll will be good, there may be the odd jump here and there, which would simply be down to some areas of the greens that is still settling. It is very important to make sure we repair pitch marks as it is young grass it needs to be given a good amount of time to recover and not fixing these pitch marks straight away will prevent that.

Bunker Drainage The bunkers have never had drainage which has caused issues in that irrigation water sits on the surface of the bunker. It also effects the sand and the playability throughout the day. We did this project in house and hired a small excavator to do the drainage lines in the bunkers. We then put the drainage pipe and added gravel to protect it from being contaminated by the sand. We managed to get the bunkers done in 2 weeks which was a great achievement by the team and we look forward to presenting bunkers for the season.

Tee Project Over time the tees have changed in regards to levels due to the divoting that happens. It is like a bow affect where the middle is a lot higher than the sides. This summer we went around the whole course and re levelled these tees. During this process we extended a lot of them so we can spread wear throughout the year and keep them in better condition.

First Day clearing 7th Tee

7th Tee being Sprigged

Other Projects This summer there has been quite a lot of things going on as well. We hired a cherry picker lift for 4 months so we could trim some very big trees that have not been done for over 10 years. The reason for doing this was that these trees actually prevented grass areas getting good sunlight and air circulation. This effected the grass areas and lack of growth was evident all the year round. Since we have cleaned and thinned these trees we have seen a great improvement in grass growth which is great.

GREEN KEEPER’S UPDATE

The members tee has had a lot of work done to it, so we can enhance the experience up there and spread wear a lot better. The tee is now only two tiered and we have added a small bunker to practice those long bunker shots. The grass is currently growing in but we hope to have you on the grass during the early part of October.

Well I hope you have enjoyed a little snap shot of our summer and what we have been doing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members for the support they have shown to me and the team through this project, it means a lot. We look forward to presenting the Majlis course to you avll and hope you enjoy the new aspects of the greens and the course. Happy Golfing. MAJLIS GREENS PROJECT

Let’s get you connected… Hi this is Dong Lee, PGA professional at EGC I have seen many poor and inconsistent ball strikers from pictures below.

Peter Cowen Academy Dubai

Couple of noticeable things are right elbow is flying (aka Flying Elbow) which causes overhead swinging. The longer the club moves away from the ball, the more time there is for an error to happen on the way back to the ball. When arms are disconnected from your upper body, it can create lots of drag and reduce speed and will not return back to the ball correctly. This can lead to missing the ball and also an uncontrolled club face at impact. So here is a simple way for you to get connected again:

• Place a towel below your arms and upper chest (Pic left) • Take a back swing which you will not able to go further because you feel the towel • You will feel much shorter but well connected back swing, therefore less error will happen when swinging. (This can lead to shortage in distance initially, but if you practice and hit it well enough in sweet spots it will compensate) • I highly recommend do this when you are beginning your warm up and start with chip shots and pitch shots (20~30 balls). • If you feel connected, then you can try without towel for full swing and feel more compression. • Good luck and enjoy better striking in the middle of your club face! Dear Members, I hope this finds you all well and healthy, and that you are looking forward to some cooler weather (who isn’t?!?!). As is the case throughout the whole club, this is a very busy time with the start of the new ‘season’ and the return of summer travelers, and we are all again looking forward to seeing some familiar faces back at the club. We at Fit Lab are excited to launch our new fitness class timetable which can be found on the this page. Yoga, Zumba, Pilates and Funkeynastix all remain, as well as some new additions including Aquafit, LBT (Legs, bums & tums) and Karate! We look forward to seeing you come and try these out! We are delighted to announce our new Squash Provider, The Squash Society, who will begin providing lessons and sessions for members very soon! The best news about this is that your first session is free! We are also very excited to now be the proud owners of 10 Padel Tennis Courts. The boom in the region for this sport has been incredible over the last year and we look forward to creating memorable experiences for you all in the upcoming months. If you haven’t tried it yet, please do so soon. We will also be adding a brand

new clubhouse area to house both Padel and the Par 3, creating a unique Leisure Hub! Completion of this is due early 2022. As always, please come to myself with any questions or queries and I will be happy to assist. Many thanks Dougie

Shoulder press

The shoulder press is a multi-joint, compound movement which can be done with a barbell or dumbbells. Some of the benefits to including this movement in your programming is to increase size and strength of the shoulders, as well as improved core strength. The core needs to be locked throughout the entire movement to avoid excessive arch in the lower back. Also, the press has real life carryover, as we find ourselves in many situations needing to lift or throw objects overhead. Some tips for the next time you carry out this exercise: Grip the bar with both hands just outside shoulder width, and take a full grip with thumbs wrapped around the bar (not always necessary but this is the safer option) The bar should be under the chin with the elbows directly underneath. Begin by moving the chin back

and pressing the bar in a straight line overhead. As the bar passes the head, the head can return to its original position. The bar then returns down in the same way. Ensure a full range of motion for each rep Maintain lower back arch and chest high throughout the movement Foot position is individual, but most will find a shoulder width position optimal Ensure the legs are not used to help in the movement, keep them tight and locked which will help brace the whole body during the push Michael Lancaster

He says the S2B regular cut and thrust Monday competition has helped him overcome his previous tournament nervousness. Gulati Golfing Greatness in September 2021

Plus his father, Rohit Gulati recently shot a career best 35 gross on the Front 9 of the Faldo on September 6th to prove that golfing talent is simply in the family genes and it obviously inspired Raghav to his Amateur Open victory the following weekend!
