for a great season and although they keep the muchcoveted parking spaces until the end of August their golfing season is complete.
It has been fantastic to see colleagues looking forward to their well-deserved breaks and for some reacquainting with family members for the first time since the Covid pandemic.
The annual captain’s dinner took place on 29th May, an annual tradition when past, present and future captains get together.

Emirates Golf Club Indoor Tent Many of you will have been familiar with the Media Centre tent that was positioned to the left of the bag drop area, close to the event lawn. This was owned by Falcon Golf (organizers and promoters of the SDDC). The club used the venue for functions including tournament
prizegiving dinners and large sporting events. The old structure was removed last summer due to age and condition. The club doesn’t have an indoor event space including a back up plan for the occasional rainy day, so we are currently constructing a new indoor space.
FIFA World Cup Fan Zone As we look forward to the remainder of 2022 one of the standout events is the FIFA World Cup in Qatar from 21st November to 18th December. We have a long tradition of hosting fan experiences during global sporting events so during the tournament we will be hosting a fan zone on the event lawn and inside our new indoor arena.

Faldo Hole 7 & 13 Nick Faldo design team has been consulting specifically on holes 7 and 13 during visits dating back to pre-Covid. During the summer we will make some changes to these holes as below:
Hole 7 The Fairway will be extended to the left, so players have an enlarged landing area. The start of the fairway will be dropped so players can see the landing area from the tee, and mounding to the left of the tee boxes to improve
high handicapped players, plus facilitate new tee boxes. Build new tee boxes, back and to the right, enabling us to lengthen the hole for Blue and Black tee boxes. The landing area short right of the green will be increased in size by reducing the size of the bunker.

Finally, Congratulations to Amarjeet and all EGC members who represented the club in the annual Quaich competition. The event is an interclub fixture against Montgomerie and delighted to say EGC retained the trophy.

Driving Range The Driving range will be closed for an extended period in the summer to build new target greens, accessible from both ends of the range, plus the desert look and feel will be replaced with approximately 80% grass. Below I have included some background on the driving range to explain the changes since January 2022. • Lack of opportunity for upkeep resulted in the range outfield being in poor condition at the start of the year, including potholes damaging ball pickers and January storms resulting in poor condition with SDDC approaching. • It was decided to copy a driving range the team saw in Arizona with sand outfield and defined targets. • The work was conducted in January including the leveling and the target greens were overseeded with Rye grass to create well defined targets for the SDDC Pros then subsequent golfers and got great reviews initially. • In addition, the sand outfield approach was a sustainability benefit and helped reduce irrigation expenses. You won’t know that all grassed and landscaped areas in Dubai last Summer struggled for irrigation (TSE) supply. Therefore, consequently we considered areas to reduce our water demand including the driving range.
• Another disadvantage to the sand outfield has been accelerated deterioration of the driving range balls. • Green targets - During the summer changes we will ensure the targets are positioned so that golfers practicing from either end of the range will have plenty of targets to hit balls to. • Following the work in the summer the below will be achieved: • Main Grass tee top (near side) - completely levelled eliminating the irregularities in the surface. Note this is overseeded with Rye grass every December. • The outfield will be approx. 80% grass due to challenges mentioned above. • Target greens designed for practice from both ends (i.e., some will be back-to-back slightly inclined so golfers can see the ball land). • Some greens will be joined with grass aprons.

Amarjeet Radia EMIRATES GOLF CLUB LADY CAPTAIN
C A P TA I N ’ S MESSAGE I hope everyone is coping well with onset of summer and for those brave enough to still play, staying well hydrated!
While it is hard to pick just one highlight from the season, our memorable Lady’s trip to Kenya in May, is still fresh in my mind! It was a seven day adventure! The beautifully challenging courses we played, Karen Country Club, Sigona Golf Club and Muthaiga Golf club. Each course was different and provided the challenge the ladies were looking for.
Emirates Golf Club ladies also had a match play against Muthaiga Golf Club and we are hoping to reciprocate with them on our home course. The treatment we received from the clubs and their respective Lady Captains was astonishing, reflecting the true Kenyan hospitality!
12
Off the course, we had great nights of socializing, a few features on local new channels. We were celebrities! and an unforgettable trip to the Masai Mara, a safari, that introduced Kenya in its true form. This was a real high light– All in all, it was a trip we will cherish for years to come!

I hope that you are keeping well and enjoying your time at the Club. The first half of 2022 has been extremely positive here at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Significant investment has gone in to upgrading the food & beverage offering and improving the golf courses and other leisure facilities. Our wonderful team of colleagues are fully committed to enhancing the member experience here at the Club and below is a brief update on what is currently being done to achieve this.
Restaurants It has been an incredibly busy period for our F&B Manager, Gabriel, and Executive Sous Chef, Jobin. They have done an outstanding job opening the new Crafty Fox Gastropub & Sports Bar and our Italian offering, Bussola. Both outlets are proving to be extremely popular, and we are collecting lots of member feedback to ensure we tweak things quickly to your liking. Over at the Tennis Academy, Tap & Grill has received an upgrade to the interior so that you can enjoy dining there through the summer. At the Country Club, Al Botanica has been refurbished, expanded, and has a wonderful new menu. The addition of the new pool bar has also been well received by the membership.

C A P TA I N ’ S MESSAGE May and June were very busy considering the increase in humidity & temperatures. With Earth course undergoing a substantial amount of work the majority of our events were played on the Fire course. Once again, we are very grateful to Stuart Horwood and his dedicated Agronomy Team for providing us with the excellent conditions that we have all become accustomed to. Our Lounge Spa winner was Willlemijn Roter Dink followed very closely taking 2nd place was our Vice Captain Evelyn Downham. So that we could beat the heat we played our Park Hyatt event in 3 balls and the winners making the most of good playing conditions on Fire were Sheila McIlroy, Sara Chadwick and Jacqui De Vries. Our June Lounge Spa event was well supported with 18 ladies playing. 1st prize going to Bettina Schrockenfuchs, 2nd was Willlemijn Roeter Dink and 3rd was Juliette Castell. We also played Bingo, Bango, Bungo with myself taking the most points. The name may be a little confusing but believe me a great fun competition for all levels. In June we welcomed our new Lady Professional Ginger Delacrétaz. We are all looking forward to playing & learning from Ginger when we restart our ladies group later in September. Unfortunately we had a few goodbyes which is common this time of the year. Our ladies group wish Steffan Jones and his lovely new wife Ffion all the best on their move back to Wales. Also departing for the cooler Welsh weather is Gareth Roberts. We are going to miss both of these patient, hardworking guys and appreciate all they have done in developing & growing our ladies group and making it the success that it is today.

Despite the hot and humid conditions, summer is our favourite time of the year. It is when we get to lay the foundations for next high season. This winter, we made the decision not to overseed and with no transition we have been able to jump straight into our improvement projects. Our focus in the early part of the summer will be to rebuild all the ladies tees, complete our first summer maintenance and make sure our collars are healthy ahead of next winter. Our collars suffered in the coldest part of the winter so we are undertaking significant reshaping to spread wear and improve drainage.
Ladies Tees Like the Men’s Tees last year, these are being both expanded and levelled so that we can spread wear and remove weeds. We are about 75% of the way through and all tees will be open before the end of September.
Collars Last year when we hosted the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, we were proud of the course conditions that we presented. However, the intense maintenance did create extra wear on our collars and they never recovered throughout the winter. This summer we will significantly reshape collars to help them drain better, spread wear and promote fresh strong growth that will last throughout high season. This process is called ‘fraze mowing’ and is becoming an ever more popular way of refreshing tees, approaches and fairways on golf courses. 5 8

A G RO N O M Y U P D AT E Summer Maintenance Throughout summer in the UAE, all golf courses conduct what is known as ‘renovations’. The goal of our maintenance on the golf course summer is to present the best golf course possible throughout high season. We want the golf course to play firmer and stay greener, despite there being no overseed, throughout the winter. We conduct processes such as verticutting, scalp mowing, topdressing and tining will improve the condition of the grass and its roots. We physically remove old dead material and replace it with fresh clean sand. We’re already looking forward to how the golf course will perform this year.

Tree Planting We continue to plant as many trees as we can in suitable areas. The focus is on native trees that naturally withstand this environment and use less water. We are using a blend of Moringa, Sidr, Neem and Gaff Trees. Some will grow faster than others to give a more instant impact, whereas the Gaff trees will take much longer to establish. Our efforts to plant Gaff trees are being supplemented by the charity Goumbook who encourage companies to plant the saplings and raise awareness about the UAE’s national tree.

Bee Hive Project We have also partnered with Rolls Royce to install bee hives on property. This is part of their worldwide CSR initiative. Not only is protecting bees a worthy cause but their presence will significantly enhance the pollination of flowers on site as well as produce some delicious Honey! Bees are far more common in landscaping than you might think and if you go looking you will find colonies in bushes all over the golf course already. Similar to the awareness sessions with Goumbook, the hives will afford us the opportunity to engage with the local community and collaborate with schools through the Beekeepers Association.

We are now slowing down into the summer months and reflecting on what has been another excellent season of golf at Dubai Creek.
GOLF & TO U R N A M E N T S Course Rules I want to make a quick point about rulings on the golf course. We have had a number of issues across the season with incorrect rulings and golfers retrospectively raising issues with rulings. I feel it is important to remind us that golf is a self-regulated game with no referees or rules officials at the club level. The onus for the correct implementation of the Rules of Golf lands first and foremost on you the golfer, next, on your player partners and finally the management of the club at an advisory level.
62
Here are a few pointers to help you out: • If you realise you have broken a rule during play, inform your playing partners straight away. • If you feel confident you understand the rule and how to correct it, do so immediately, involving your playing partners in the process. • If you are unsure on the rule and how to proceed, play two balls, each with a different version of the rule, inform club management after the round and we will advise you on the correct option. • If you witness a golfer in your group breaking a rule, inform them immediately and then ask them to proceed under point 2) or 3).

Lincoln Dubai Creek Pro-Am At the end of April, we were delighted to once again host the Lincoln Open alongside our partners and friends from Lincoln. The event was well attended with 70 players joining us for this fun team stableford. As always Lincoln put up some great prizes with the winners taking home a Lincoln car for the weekend. A gripping battle took place out on the course and our triumphant fourball, with a total 91 points and winning by 4 was the team of Christian Klynge, Celeste Cordova, Michael Nielsen & Kim Gade.
OMA Emirates Dubai Creek Monthly Medal In Association With Christies International Real Estate Winning the May edition of the OMA Emirates Monthly Medal in association with Christies International Real Estate Dubai was our Lady Captain, Beatrice Galeppini with a fantastic, -7, 64. Congratulations Bea! Taking the gross prize was Miki Mirza, Division A went to Craig Kirkpatrick, Division B to Phil McArthur and finally, Shiba Wahid took the Ladies Division.
Ladies Monthly Medal By Park Hyatt Dubai Continuing a strong patch of form, Beatrice Galeppini also took May’s Ladies Monthly Medal by Park Hyatt Dubai with a -3, 68. Glory Xavier claimed Division A and Mego Han won Division B. Congratulations Ladies!
Dubai Creek Mixed Open By Park Hyatt Dubai Finally, we once again had a brilliant time at the Dubai Creek Mixed Open by Park Hyatt Dubai 2022 – an event that is quickly become a favourite amongst the membership and the wider region. The Park Hyatt were incredibly generous in their prizes as always giving everything from cooking classes to nights in the Presidential Suite! Our Gross winners on the day, with a tremendous +2, 73 (confirming my theory that this is a Galeppini’s world and we’re all spectators) was Beatrice & Edoardo Galeppini!. But our overall winners of this years Mixed Open was the last-minute pairing of Kevin Savage & Dan Tong scoring an amazing -8, 63.
