hat an amazing, busy month we had during April;.my camera was certainly working overtime… Captain’s Day, followed byTalker Cup, Lady Captain’s Day, 25th anniversary of the Curtisy Cup, BMW Seniors Open and Ladies’ Open!

Captain’s Day was a great day and evening thank you Walid for including the ladies too The Talker Cup followed the next day…Europe versus North America and this is always hotly contested (in more ways than one with the high temperatures!). It was a good win for North America and the full report is in this issue. The food in Le Classique in the evening was superb thanks to Chef Nicholas and his team. A presentation was made to Charlie Stricklin who has been a member at Emirates Golf Club for many years. Charlie assured us that this was his last working period in the Middle East and that he was finally retiring. Lady Captain’s Day was a super day as always, followed by delicious lunch in the Media Centre to accommodate the 140 ladies…and a good time was had by all. The 25th Anniversary of the Curtisy Cup was on 27th April. This again was an amazing day of team support, friendly, good spirited rivalry and banter, and great camaraderie. The teams even had pre-Curtisy Cup social get-togethers hosted by Rekha Bandopadhyay of Europe and Naima Maya of Rest of the World. I was most impressed to see the photo of the Rest of the World social when they were all dressed in their team colours of red and white and even the tablecloths were red…impressive! For me it’s great to see how this has developed as I started the Curtisy Cup in 1991 (which was the first casual one and then in 1992 it was included in the calendar as an official event) and it has gone from strength to strength since. In this month’s issue, we have some impressions of the US Masters by first time visitors and by someone who was revisiting after an absence of ten years. I think if there is one tournament that you should go to in your lifetime, it’s the US Masters…it is so different from any other event, viewing is easy, people are so courteous and it’s an experience never to be forgotten. However, when you go once, you will want to go again, it’s that special…we have been three times in the space of seven years!!

What about our Omega Dubai Desert Classic Champion Danny Willett, winning the 2016 US Masters…amazing and he nearly didn’t go because his wife was expecting their first child but fortunately she gave birth two weeks early! Fantastic! Well, we are nearing the end of our season; it’s incredible how quickly the time has flown and we are now getting into the very hot summer months and members will soon will start heading out to cooler climates but there’s still plenty happening at our fantastic club to keep you all busy if you are here, both on the golfing and on the social front so check the notice boards and emails and try to support the events.

Thank you all for turning out for my Captain’s Day last month which was certainly one of the highlights of my tenure. I included an invitation to the ladies on this day also as I wanted it to be a full Club event which resulted in maximum numbers on the Majlis course. Now, on to my Captain’s Day drive…I had an ace card up my sleeve when I invited Head Professional, Stephen Deane, to take my drive for me. He was totally taken aback, not having had prior notice of this, but he launched a huge drive down the middle of the fairway. Not to disappoint my fellow members, you were all witness to my own drive which unfortunately was not my best…anyway it all added to the fun on the day.

I would like to thank our Emirates Academy Junior Vlademar for taking part and offering his tee shot to teams on the par 3 11th hole – you did a great job! Thank you also to all colleagues for setting up the course, the beverage and food stations and to Andrew, Barney, Rhys and Nishanthi for all their ‘behind the scenes’ work. The evening function was excellent, thanks to Chef Nicholas and his team…what superb food - you really did a great job. Thank you to Jacqui Barry for all the photos as usual. Congratulations to all winners and thank you to the numerous sponsors… EGA, AGMC-BMW Rivoli Group Hellibron I very much appreciate all your contributions to this event. Thanks to all of you who, together, managed to donate

the sum of AED 13,000 to Dubai Autism Centre during the event. All in all, I could not have wished for a better day! It has been my absolute pleasure and privilege to have been Captain at this wonderful Club this season which I consider to be the best Club in the region. Having had such a wonderful winter period with many months of cool weather, winds and rain, we seem to be skipping the interim period of rising temperatures and it has gone from cool to very hot almost overnight. With this in mind, I urge you to take care in the heat, keep yourselves hydrated and slap on the sunscreen. Happy golfing and please don’t forget to repair pitch marks, fill in divots and rake those bunkers! Walid Al Attar Club Captain 2015-2016

Amr Salem and Fady Iskandar Clinch Barclays Hickory Opener

T

he Barclays Hickory Series got under way last month on the Faldo course in a 9-hole, 4.00pm shotgun start.

The stars of the opening fixture and the victors were Amr Salem and Fady Iskandar. During the six qualifying rounds, each competitor MUST use the Hickory clubs provided for every stroke including on the putting green. For all players the use of Hickory clubs was a new experience and Salem and Iskandar combined perfectly to produce a 2-under par 20 points over the 9-hole competition. With the course set-up slightly shorter due to the unique equipment 20 points was a superb effort and gave them

victory by a 4-stroke margin. The pair each received a voucher for AED500 from sponsors Barclays. Swati Singh and Anish Bhatia claimed runners-up place on 16 points with Josie Tracey and Elvira Smith taking third place on 13 points. The top three pairs qualified for the regional final on Saturday 10th September and the winners from that will represent the region and Barclays in the World Hickory Open Championship Final which takes place at Panmure Golf Course in Carnoustie, Scotland on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th October 2016. Also in the prizes on the night for their accuracy on the nearest the pin prize holes were Raj Janardhan and Fady Iskandar.

It’s getting Hickory Hot on the Majlis course as EGC Professional Bryan Smyth entertains members with the Hickory Nearest the Pin challenge. Prize voucher for the lucky winner courtesy of Dubai Islamic Bank

The tournament entry fees per fixture are: Member: AED 75 Member’s Guest: AED 250 Guest: AED 275 Entry fee includes nine holes of golf on the Faldo, cart hire, Hickory club hire, snack platters in Spikes and prize presentation after play including AED1000 for the top pair. We were honoured to host the Rotana Ladies’ Inter-Club Final on the Faldo Course on 19th April, with 12 teams from around the Emirates taking part. Thanks to Mark McCarthy and Rotana for sponsoring this event, Sandy Meyer for organising the Inter-Club league and also to all colleagues at the Club for their hard work in organising a great day. Congratulations to EGC ladies on becoming champions - not just for those who played on the day, but to all the ladies who have played in the league matches throughout the season I am so proud of you all. April also saw the 25th

anniversary of the Curtisy Cup - one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the golfing calendar. The European team, captained by Lynne Dickinson, retained the trophy with a victory of 10.5 to 5.5 over Sulafa Hamdan’s Rest of the World team, a final score which does not reflect how close the competition really was, with many matches only being settled on the last few holes. Well played to both teams and long may the spirit and camaraderie of this competition continue - here’s to the next 25 years! Then there were the Captains’ Days. Walid had organised a great mixed tournament to celebrate his year as Captain - thanks so much for all your efforts and hard work Walid. As for my Lady Captain’s Day, I hope

that you all enjoyed it as much as I did. I was thrilled that so many of you were able to be there, and relieved also that the heat held off a bit longer and gave us a lovely day. Chefs Nicholas and Sri and their team pulled out all the stops to give us a truly delicious lunch, and such stunning presentations on the plates too…and what can I say about the entertainment except ‘Goodness gracious me!’ I had no idea that there was so much singing and acting talent in the group! Thank you all so much for a memorable day.

T

he Rotana Ladies Inter-Club final was held this year at Emirates Golf Club. Over a hundred ladies from twelve clubs in the region teed off on the Faldo course for the 2016 season finale and the event again very generously sponsored by Rotana who played a huge part once again in the success of the day. The championship was decided from the best eight stableford scores of each team of ten ladies. Three clubs were playing for the championship after winning their respective leagues throughout the season. However, it was our team from Emirates Golf Club who made full use of their home advantage to become the Inter-Club champions with their winning score of 243 points, having been lead to victory by Lady Captain Helen Srivastava and a big team effort from all of the EGC ladies throughout the

season. The team from Abu Dhabi Golf Club were runners-up with a team score of 230 points followed by Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club in third place with 215 points. aima Maya and Haide Wright are the new 2016 Champions of the Hankook Greensomes Championship. It was a close competitive contest with three pairs tied on a 36 hole net score of 136. Naima represented Emirates Golf Club and Haide Wright represented Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. Also tied on a net score of 136 over the Faldo and Majlis courses was the Emirates Golf Club pairing of Anand Lakhiani and Nelly Armanani, the duo enjoying some consistent golf with net scores on each day of 68 to finish in second place. Also with a net score of 136 were Christian Klynge (EGC) and Soren Dam (EGF) who were the overnight leaders after an opening net 65 on the Faldo. However, a second round net 71 saw them finish in third place. A

RULES

Pro’s Tip of the Month

BY RHYS Know your ‘DEFINITIONS’ to help know the ‘RULES’

In the latest 2016 rule book, between pages 30-45 you will find all of the definitions that form the basis of the rules of golf. It is well believed that golfers who are well aware of the definitions will stand a better chance of knowing and playing by the rules. To give you an insight here are a few that I have selected.

Abnormal Ground Condition

An “abnormal ground condition” is any casual water, ground under repair or hole, cast or runway on the course made by a burrowing animal, a reptile or a bird.

Mark Bruce

The Chicken Wing

Academy

Rules of Golf

by ACADEMY Professional,

11

When looking closely at many amateurs you will see backswings that can match those of many top Professionals but the ball flight they produce can be somewhat different, Why? Simple, the trust to allow the club to pass the body during impact. Many golfers will try to hold the club through impact trying to control the shot, this can lead to the ball heading right and slicing, limited speed and topping the ball. On the through swing you will see the elbows separate and the left wrist will bow leading to the left elbow moving high and left (the chicken wing theory). See pictures (1) and (2)

Holed

A ball is “holed” when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole and all of it is below the lip of the hole.

Pic 1

NOTE: The ball pictured is NOT holed.

Provisional Ball

A “provisional ball” is a ball played under rule 27-2 for a ball that may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds.

Pic 2

Below is a very simple drill that can really help set off some triggers in the mind and enhance the feeling to get extension out of the hands and release the club naturally without manipulation of the wrists. This exercise will help create better positions for the wrists and the left elbow during the through swing. Try to feel your elbows stay close together during contact. Start by placing the right foot close but almost directly behind you which will help use the left side of the body as a resistance to help extend the arms, speed up the club head and close the face through impact. As the left wrist will now be in a cupped position the elbow will sit down and in below the left hand, as per pictures below.

NOTE: Explains why a provisional ball cannot be hit for a ball that may be in a water hazard.

Rub of the Green

A “rub of the green occurs” when a ball in motion is accidentally deflected or stopped by an outside agency NOTE: Refers to the Faldo course flood lights. If a ball strikes the floodlights then it is deemed “rub of the green” and the ball must be played as it lies.

Through the Green

Through the green is the whole area of the course except: a. The teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and b. All hazards on the course If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply Email your query to rjames@dubaigolf.com

Stance for the drill

Arm extension

Left elbow below the grip

This simple drill will help those who are looking to straighten out a slice and create extra power. Give it a try and watch your shots improve.

12 UPDATE FROM DIRECTOR OF GOLF, BARNEY COLEMAN

Dear Members, Congratulations this month go to Eddie Hesson for winning the Men’s Club Championship! The Junior Club Champion Matthew Baxter took Eddie to two extra holes but a birdie four on the 18th hole sealed victory for Eddie. Naema Maya and Haide Wright combined brilliantly last month to win the Hankook Greensomes Championship, and the tournament yet again showed its popularity with 120 players taking part. A busy month on the golfing calendar saw our members Carolyn Thompson and Stuart Thompson winning their respective BMW Seniors Championship titles. Last but not least huge congratulations to the Ladies’ Section for clinching the Inter-Club League, with the team winning the grand final over our Faldo course.

Thank you for all your support of Walid’s Captain’s day on 15th April and of Helen’s on 25th April; both events produced superb turnouts of over 120 players! The level of entries reflects the time, effort and commitment given by Walid and Helen this year - thank you both for a fabulous season! We wish Maura and Vipen the best of luck next season as they are joined by Ivan Fornazaric and Najla Bartette as Vice-Captains from 1st September. The OMA Emirates Monthly Medal Championship welcomes on board Porsche Centre Dubai as support sponsor from April onwards. During the remaining eight Monthly Medals of the calendar year there will be a nearest the pin competition each week. The winners from the eight nearest the pin challenges will qualify for the ‘Porsche Centre Dubai Hole-in-One Shoot Out’ at the Medal

Championship Grand Final in early 2017. During this shoot out on the Majlis course 18th hole, the lucky eight players will have a chance to win a Porsche. Please be informed of the below closures over the summer period and into the overseeding season: Majlis 19th – 23rd June 26th – 28th June 31st July – 4th August 30th October – 3rd November (overseeding closure) Faldo 22nd-26th May 10th – 14th July 6th -10th November (overseeding) Regards, Barney Coleman Director of Golf, Emirates Golf Club

BIRDS OF THE EMIRATES by Akhil Menon IT Manager

Common Sandpiper Scientific Name: Actitis hypoleucos Shot: Faldo Course Date shot: April 2016 Wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_ sandpiper Description: Yet another wading bird features as this month’s bird of the month. The Common Sandpiper is a small widespread winter visitor whose call is an anxious weewee- wee when flushed or alarmed. It characteristically rocks the rear end of its body and bobs its head constantly when feeding. It also runs along the water’s edge and picks prey from ground or vegetation. It is generally seen flying low over the water, with rapid, shallow wing-beats alternating with brief glides on stiff down-curved wings. These birds are invariably solitary in non-breeding seasons. At Emirates Golf Club, the bird can be seen around the water features especially on the Faldo course. They are generally shy so will lift off and fly low over the water. This is an easy way to identify the bird although other variants of the family are also seen here.

ongratulations to Danny Willett, Omega Dubai Desert Classic Champion 2016 and honorary member of Emirates Golf Club on winning the 2016 US Masters Champion,

Who is Danny Willett? The 28-year-old Englishman was born in Sheffield; his father, Steve, was a Church of England vicar and his mother, Elisabet, a maths teacher. Steve Willett would drop his son off at the local golf course as a child “with a fiver for lunch”. Danny Willett said, “When I came home, a good day wasn’t about whether I’d shot 65 but whether I was all right. I’ve been to a few sports psychologists but the best one I know is my dad.” Willett used to practice in a sheep pasture. “We used to go to Anglesey to play a par three course in the middle of a sheep field,” he said. “You skip it forward 17 years and you’ve got an invite to the Masters. It’s just a bit crazy really.”

2016

Danny Willett shot to global attention with his incredible Masters victory at Augusta last month after a stunning final round of 67 picking up three birdies in his final six holes to win his first major victory and his fifth professional win; this was just days after his wife Nicole gave birth to their first child Zachariah who was born the Tuesday before Masters week which was fortunately earlier than the due date of Masters weekend! He said, “It’s been crazy. You can’t describe the emotions. It was my day. It was a surreal day with the ebb and flow. We hit the correct shots and holed the putts when we needed to. It’s my wife’s birthday, my son was due today. You talk about fate and everything else that goes with it, it’s crazy.” The Englishman had enjoyed steady progress up the world rankings with three European Tour wins over the previous 18 months and this major win moved Danny into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career.

His success at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in December 2014 was the platform for an outstanding 2015 that also saw him win the Omega European Masters, as well as coming third in the WGC Cadillac Match Play, taking a share of sixth at The Open Championship and finishing second in The Race to Dubai. Another victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February 2016 took him to a world ranking of 13. The former world amateur No.1 from Sheffield played Walker Cup in 2007, the same year he won the English Amateur. The Jacksonville State University graduate also won national amateur titles in Australia and Spain after becoming the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. Danny claimed his first European Tour title at the 2012 BMW International, beating Marcus Fraser in a play-off in Germany and has gone on to enjoy sustained success at the top end of golf.

My first Masters Visit by Vice-Captain, Vipen Sethi

I

t all began in May 2015 when Kish Bandopadhyay announced that he and Rekha were planning to go to watch the US Masters in Augusta in April 2016. Lionel and Ninu Smith and Rena and I jumped on the band wagon expecting to get onto a plane with all the bookings made, itinerary in hand for a great ten day experience. That is exactly how it turned out to be. So the six of us decided to spend four days in New York from 1st to 4th April and then go on to Augusta from 5th

to 10th April to watch the US Masters. We had made plans to play a round of golf at Winged Foot Country Club in New York but the rain gods kept us away. On 5th April we took a flight out to Atlanta and were transported by limo from the airport for the two hour drive to Augusta, Georgia. Right from the time of our arrival in Georgia, the experience was ‘exceptional’ and ‘grand’. On arrival at the house which we had rented for the one week stay, we were welcomed as

2016

“Guests of the Masters”. We all felt elated as you can see from the pictures below as the welcome was quite unique. On the Wednesday, we proceeded to watch the par 3 tournament and be part of the ‘Family Fun Day’ at Augusta and it really was that way. With more than 100,000 visitors to Augusta on this day, the discipline, the decorum and etiquette was something I have not seen before. There was excitement whereever you looked, whether it was Jack (Nicklaus) riding the cart around the course, Gary (Player) having a hole-in-one or Arnie (Palmer) just watching like any other spectator – albeit in beautiful green jackets. The four days of golf starting on the Thursday were a different experience. When I say different, really different.

US MASTERS by Chris May, CEO, Dubai Golf

Craig Haldane, our Director - Golf Course Maintenance and I had the opportunity to attend the US Masters this year, which for golfers is a ‘must do’ at some point in your life! I had been once before in 2006 when Phil Mickelson won his second green jacket, and it was amazing to see the changes and developments made at Augusta, in what must be regarded as the best sporting event on the planet! The tournament is the first major of the year, and it really generates global attention on the game of golf; the world’s top golfers all work hard from the beginning of the season to ‘peak’ in that week, and it is evident from Danny Willett’s first major win that his preparation in Dubai and his win in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club in February, certainly did him no harm! Perhaps more of the top pros will go on to win at Augusta after winning at Emirates Golf Club in future……. On the first day of the tournament Craig and I teed it up at Sage Valley Golf Club, which is as close to playing Augusta National that you will get, without actually getting to go down Magnolia Lane. The course is located just 15 minutes from Augusta on a stunning piece of undulating land covered with mature trees. The experience was incredible with golf course conditions and college level golfers as caddies! The course is a great test of golf with so many of the

1. 40,000 plus spectators on each day. 2. No rules or announcements for tee offs. 3. No boards saying “Stand Still”, “Quiet Please”. 4. No cameras and mobile phones (Rena felt she had left half of herself back home). 5. No hospitality tents for the ‘Rich & Famous’. 6. Only ‘Masters’ branded merchandise. 7. No advertisements for a single brand or product. 8. Not a single blade of grass which was not consistently green. 9. Long queues for food/toilets but all moving so quickly. 10. More importantly, cheap food and beverage. We were also told to do our shopping early in the week as all merchandise sell

We attended as patrons on Friday and Saturday, and made the most of the first day by walking the full course, after placing our Masters chairs on hole #16 so that we could return in the afternoon, take our seats and watch the best players in the world play one of the most recognisable par 3’s in golf. We also visited the practice facility which has been transformed since my visit a decade ago; it is now huge and easily the best practice facility I have ever seen, providing everything the players want to warm up and prepare for the challenge ahead. The retail operation has grown and developed out of all recognition and the service is very slick and efficient……it is the only place you can buy Masters merchandise anywhere, so it is very easy to spend a lot of money!!! The food and beverage operation for patrons has improved from temporary facilities years ago and they offer great service in permanent facilities with well organised fast moving queues (or lines for our American friends!). Perhaps one of the most surprising aspects of the catering operation are the prices which are all extremely reasonable, which makes for a pleasant experience for all attending. Many airports in the world do not have a security check procedure, on entry as efficient as Augusta, it is

s

he history and reputation of Augusta National and the US Masters in the game of golf is difficult to appreciate fully without visiting the tournament. Expectations are high, with so many of us familiar with all the holes on the course from watching the event in Dubai very late into the night for so many years……..all I can say is Augusta in Masters week, delivers in every area and exceeds every expectation!

holes being instantly memorable, always the test of a great course in my opinion. Sage Valley is a high end member club and since our visit it has just hosted the Junior Invitational which is one of the premier Junior events in the world. Tiger Woods gave an eagerly anticipated clinic at the event using all the clubs in his bag, so perhaps it will not be long before he makes a return to competitive golf.

almost an enjoyable experience, which says a lot about the welcome that patrons are given at this point. Even the restrooms at Augusta are an experience to be remembered, making the wait pass by in no time. Augusta is one of the few sporting venues where mobile phones are not permitted and, although it is a shame perhaps to have no photographs of the amazing course, it does allow you simply to enjoy the surroundings and the experience of actually being there. Saturday was a very special experience as we had access to Berckmans Place, which is ‘the ultimate hospitality experience in global sport’. It is the only hospitality facility on the golf course, and is well hidden with no views of the course, located behind the 5th hole. Berckman’s is an amazing permanent hospitality venue, built four years ago and features six stunning restaurants and bars, a pro shop and a museum…….service here is on a different level, and it is only used for one week a year! The highlight has to be the outside garden area which features three putting greens which are exact replicas of the 7th, 14th and 16th greens on the course! The greens are maintained and prepared to the exact same level as those on the course and you can queue up for 15-20 minutes and be taken round by an Augusta caddie and putt to the weekend pin positions……..wow what an experience!! It just gives you some idea how challenging the greens are at Augusta……….needless to say, not one of our fourball managed to single putt any of the three greens! On Sunday we headed back to the airport, via the Charlotte Country Club to have a look around at what is one of that part of the worlds’ great Members’ Clubs. We managed to find a TV at the airport, to watch the final afternoon of the Masters, as the drama of the back nine unfolded…….and took off just as our own Desert Classic Champion Danny Willett holed out on #18…………..what a finish!

Hole #2, Sage Valley 3! what a Par

achievement and superb golf for Danny who I am sure was himself surprised at how Jordan Spieth faltered. However, we all know what happened on the course but I must say the experience made Jordan Spieth look great. The way he handled the hours after the Masters loss was remarkable and I am sure most difficult for him.

out fast. They sure did. We believe on the Wednesday the Pro Shop did a sale of US$1.2 million alone. On the golf course however, Danny Willett took home the green jacket and prize money of US$1.8 million. What a great

I not only enjoyed the visit to the Masters but I learned that the game of golf is a great leveller and all of us who play the game are humans – and can make blunders sometimes. I hope Jordan comes back after this with determination to win two consecutive green jackets to equal the record of some of the other greats in golf. The Masters is a lifetime experience and if any of you have the chance to visit – grab it.

CURTISY CUP

T

he Curtisy Cup is an annual match played over 36 holes between Europe and the Rest of the World, this year captained by Lynne Dickinson and Sulafa Hamdan respectively. and this was also the 25th event It was a keenly contested event and after the morning greensomes, Europe and Rest of the World were level with four points each.. The afternoon betterball matchplays saw the tables turn in favour of Europe who won 10 ½ – 5 ½ overall. Eligibility for the teams is through Order of Merit points gained from Medal competitions. Without a doubt the Curtisy Cup has grown into an event

2016

in which everyone wants to play and qualification is still through points earned in Medal competitions (so if you did not qualify this year, make sure you play the Monthly Medals next season as this is one of the highlights of the ladies’ calendar The morning rounds are always greensomes and the afternoon rounds are four-ball betterball matches - a format which has not changed since the very beginning. Whether you are a player, a Vice-Captain or Captain, it is always such a pleasure to be able to participate in this exciting and closely contested event; without a doubt Emirates Golf Club colleagues always do their utmost to make it a great day…flags

on carts, scoring, tee time allocation, F&B etc…and the rest is entirely up to the players What is it that makes it such an eagerly awaited event? …the build up to the event with team meetings and team socials, the unique atmosphere on the day and the support from friends and team-mates. Win or lose, I don’t think there has ever been an occasion when players have not not joined in with the fun and celebrations afterwards. The camaraderie is second to none, the celebrations, the singing, the laughter and the fun! Congratulations Team Europe on beating the Rest of the World in the Curtisy Cup 2016! Well done to all of the players!

TALKER CUP Congratulations to North America for beating Europe 11.5 - 8.5 in the 2016 Talker Cup.

From Captain, PeteR McKenzie

The Talker Cup was started in May 1988 by Richard Chiarantona and since, then, it has gone from strength to strength. There were two events in 1988 so this year was the 30th one. Well done to both teams for what was a great event played in true Talker Cup spirit with North America ultimately winning back the trophy this year.

It was an honour to captain the European team this year and although unsuccessful, I am sure everyone would agree that this was another example of great sportsmanship and friendship at Emirates Golf Club.

Captains this year were Peter McKenzie for Europe and Eric Koeman for North America.

We are privileged indeed to be able to participate in great competitions like the Talker Cup and the Tri Nations Many thanks to Rhys and Barney for all their help in the background and special thanks to Jacqui Barry for the pictures and to Tom for his Irish Seve role in the buggy, making the excellent point on more than one occasion that “we had better get our fingers out.” (Tom was injured so unable to take part) Congratulations to Eric and his North American team. Eric you were a great and honourable captain in the best traditions of the Talker Cup.

From Captain, Eric Koeman As co-Captain of the North Americans with Bo Crawley, I would like to first salute all 20 members of our team for elevating their performance at the right time and under some very tough pressure. The fact that the cup was won with a long eagle putt on the 18th by our third to last group is a great testimony to that ideal and how close it really was to that point but I would also like to salute Peter and the European squad for demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship and dedication in support of the cause. It was a joy to take part once again and the event is the big winner when 40 players come together like this in the spirit of good competition and fair play. I’m looking forward to supporting our new Captain Mark Thomson as we try to retain the cup next year.

We are starting to see some encouraging signs of Bermuda coming through in rough. We know however, that some areas will take longer and may need sprig planting of Bermuda to ensure it recovers more quickly

We do various things to encourage this to happen sooner than later. Slicing is a practice whereby we slice lines into the turf. This breaks up compaction, improves oxygenation of the soil, enhances the uptake of nutrition and also divides the Bermuda plants to encourage lateral growth. Where we have larger shaded areas, the Bermuda will be very weak and we will certainly have to go in and plant additional sprig to grow things back. We also apply additional sand which encourages growth of Bermuda in weaker areas. The plus side this year, is that fairways were not overseeded so we have a full stand of Bermuda on our fairways. We have not overseeded greens since 2012 so again, we have no transition to worry about on our short mown playing surfaces. We strongly encourage you all to please keep to cart paths where possible, and to also rather keep the carts on the fairways and off the rough areas. The less traffic we have in rough the sooner we will be able to get the Bermuda to return. Summer time is officially here. Hold on tight! Good golfing

By lowing the height of cut in the Rye grass rough, we ensure more direct sunlight is penetrating the surface to warm up the soil and encourage the Bermuda to start actively growing again

WHAT WE DO!

the mind and emotions. Regular Reiki treatments can bring about a calmer and more peaceful state of being in which a person is better able to cope with everyday stress. This mental balance also enhances learning, memory and mental clarity. Reiki can heal mental/emotional wounds, work through dysfunction and, in more severe situations, it can help alleviate mood swings, fear, frustration and even anger. Reiki can also strengthen and heal personal relationships. Because it enhances your capability to love, it can open you up to the people around you and help your relationships grow. By improving your capacity for empathy, Reiki allows you to connect with people on a deeper level. Reiki offers relief during emotional distress and sorrow and it helps in the grieving process. It cleans and clears the emotions, preventing them from being so draining and offers perspective.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy can help anyone who is starting to see the effects of life’s wear and tear on their bodies. It can also treat or prevent physical problems that might be brewing as a result of years of poor posture or sitting badly. It is also invaluable for anyone with a specific health problem such as back and/or neck pain, arthritis, heart disease breathing problems, repetitive strain injury and many other conditions including osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and incontinence.

On the physical level, Reiki helps to relieve pain from migraine, arthritis, sciatica ~ just to name a few. It also helps with symptoms of asthma, chronic fatigue, menopausal symptoms, and insomnia.

Reiki

One of the greatest Reiki healing health benefits is stress reduction and relaxation, which triggers the body’s natural healing abilities (immune system), aids in better sleep and improves and maintains health. Reiki helps bring about inner peace and harmony. It can be a valuable tool in the quest for spiritual growth. It also balances

The benefits of Pilates include improved muscle tone and balanced musculature. It also supports correct posture, and teaches how to move with ease and grace. Other benefits include improved balance, lumbar stabilisation and flexibility, easing lower back pain, and pelvic floor strength

Food intolerance test

It is known that food can cause many different types of reactions in the body. These may be evident in the skin (such as hives, rashes, itchiness, or swellings), the gut (such as reflux, vomiting, tummy pains, wind, diarrhoea, and constipation), when breathing (such as shortness of breath or a tight chest) or through generally feeling unwell. Some people put up with symptoms for years, which could get better if the foods causing these symptoms were cut out of the diet.

Nutrition

Lifecoaching

Benefits of Life Coaching will enable you to….. - take control of and responsibility for your life, health and well-being - get in touch with your authentic self and start an exciting journey towards creating a truly fulfilled life - expand awareness of your thoughts, feelings, actions and begin to align them to what you truly desire - develop a new, healthy wholesome relationship with eating by changing the emotions you may have around food. - find the life/work balance that suits your needs - unravel the root cause of ANY unwanted habits or behaviours - discover your core values, and the impact that they may have in your life - clear obstacles from your past and focus on living in the present - recognise and unlock your potential with a renewed sense of optimism and motivation. - create strategies and action plans to help you maintain the future of your dreams

stabilising muscle groups to give greater support to joints and muscles.

Reiki speeds up recovery from surgery or long-term illness as it helps in adjusting to medicine/treatment and it also tends to reduce side-effects. For example, chemotherapy patients who received Reiki noticed a marked decrease in side effects from treatment. Reiki can be an effective way to treat immediate problems, such as physical or mental illness and recovery from surgery, but regular treatments can also improve overall health. By helping to maintain a state of physical and emotional balance, Reiki can not only treat problems, but perhaps even prevent them from ever developing. Reiki is for everyone: it heals adults, babies, toddlers, children, the elderly and pets.

Pilates Therapy

Pilates is a body conditioning routine that is used in helping to build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominal area, arms and hips as well as the back. The system involves a range of exercises, which can be modified in range of difficulty from beginners to advanced. The focus of Pilates is on slow, controlled movements, stretching tight overworked muscles and strengthening the smaller

Each person is a unique individual, there is not one nutrition plan that will work for everyone. Age, height, weight and gender are just a few factors that determine your nutrient needs. Other personal aspects such as physical activity, special needs, family health history and present health conditions require further specialisation. Dieticians take all of these things into consideration and are able to create a personalised plan that aligns with your specific health needs and goals.

Oxygen therapy

Your body’s tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function. When tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. An increase in blood oxygen temporarily restores normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and fight infection. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat several medical conditions and medical institutions use it in different ways. Your doctor may suggest hyperbaric oxygen therapy if you have one of the following conditions: • Anemia, severe • Brain abscess • Bubbles of air in your blood vessels (arterial gas embolism) • Burn • Decompression sickness • Carbon monoxide poisoning

The blood tests carried out at Bespoke Wellness can be used as a means of getting a general overview of the client’s general health, or they can be tailored for more specific ends. Our comprehensive blood testing includes a full blood profile with lipid profile, glucose level, renal function profile, liver function profile or more specific tests like hormone profiles, sexual health testing, thyroid function tests, vitamin and mineral screens as well as health risk profiles and testing for allergies or other health/physical issues. The aim of our service is to identify potential health risks as well as alert the client to existing ones so the correct medical steps can be taken. The facilities we use for conducting tests are certified by the Clinical Pathology Association (UK) Limited (CPA) which are in turn affiliated to Guys and St. Thomas’ (NHS) Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom to ensure the service we provide is of the highest quality.

Acupuncture

The beauty of acupuncture is that it is a way to promote natural healing in the body as well as improve its natural functioning. It works by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at acupuncture points on the body. What is known as medical acupuncture serves to prevent illness, can treat various medical conditions and also promote general health and well-being. This form of treatment can also relieve tension, stress and emotional conditions which can affect the client’s physical well-being. Acupuncture has also received the highest accolade with the World Health Organization recognising its benefits.

Osteopathy

We include osteopathy in our range of treatments because it provides a unique holistic approach to health care. Our osteopaths do not merely concentrate on the area of the body where the problem has occurred; they use manual techniques to balance all the systems in the body in order to provide good overall health and wellbeing. Osteopathy is drug-free and non-invasive. The treatment works by focusing on total body health. It includes the joints, muscles and spine which in turn affect the body’s nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

The Bespoke Wellness Sports Massage therapists were trained in the UK and bring years of experience treating both athletes and non-sports sports men and woman. As well as providing clients with rehabilitation following injury, our Bespoke Sports Massage service helps prevent our clients suffering injury in the first place as well as assist with improvements in posture. Focusing on soft tissue dysfunction, sports massage is different from ‘spa massage; as it is targeted to specific conditions and tailored to the individual’s needs. The service includes an extensive range of treatments for those who engage in sport or otherwise enjoy a more sedentary lifestyle. Common injuries treated include whiplash, frozen shoulder, muscle strains and pulls, joint sprain and torticollis. The unique treatment approach to the soft tissues allows the muscles and fascia to relax, restoring full range of motion and reducing pain.

IV Vitamin therapy

IV nutritional therapy can provide enormous health benefits depending on the condition(s) being treated, the specific protocol(s) used, the number of treatments and the overall health of the patient being treated. In many respects, IV nutritional therapy is a preventive aging measure since it improves the nutritional content inside of the cells. Some of the specific benefits that patients may experience include: (1) increased energy, (2) an overall sense of well being, (3)improved sports performance, (4) improved healing and recovery from sports ‘wear and tear’ or even surgical procedures (5) enhanced immune support, and (6) stress relief. IV therapy is so powerful that many patients report many of these benefits within hours of receiving the treatment. Some conditions including chronic diseases like Fibromyalgia require periodic treatments in order to maintain the benefits.

Shiatsu Massage

This consists of a finger-pressure Japanese technique that utilises the traditional acupuncture points of oriental healing. Similar to acupressure, shiatsu concentrates on unblocking the flow of life energy (or chi) and restoring the balance in the various meridians on the body.

Deep Tissue Massage

Over time, deep-tissue massage therapy can help break up and eventually erase scar tissue in the body. It does this by improving lymphatic circulation and drainage to improve flexibility and range of motion in the affected area. Scar tissue is often associated with ongoing pain and stiffness, so deep-tissue massage can improve these symptoms. Massage therapy is often recommended for people who are recovering from surgery.

Swedish Massage

Calming pressure that improves blood circulation, decrease muscle tension, and improves flexibility.

Back pain treatment/ Pain management

If any ‘unbalanced’ areas are found, possible underlying misalignment are treated with

gentle pressure using the thumb or hand to release the pain.

Reflexology

This is a method of applying pressure to various zones or reflexes on feet and hands. Reflex is thought to represent a corresponding area of the body.

Fit Lab

t is that time of year when we now start to think about summer holidays and getting into shape for the season ahead. What better place to do this than at your very own Fit Lab. We have plenty going on to keep you all occupied, from children to adults, there is something for you all. The important aspect of getting fit is to have fun; we all look at getting into shape as a chore but you can do this by not only going to the gym but also by playing squash, tennis, Padel tennis, going swimming and much more at Fit Lab.

Member of the Month

Just like a regular side plank on the floor, this exercise engages your abdominal muscles, especially the obliques. The challenge is that your feet are in the TRX — they aren’t on the floor - to help you stabilize your body, You can perform the side plank on your elbow (easier) or on your hand (harder). How to: With the TRX straps at mid-calf, place both feet in the TRX loops and come into a suspended plank position, shoulders over hands, body in a straight line from head to toe (a). Slowly, roll onto your left side so that your left elbow is directly under your left shoulder, top leg will be in front of your bottom leg, core is engaged (b). [The heel of the front foot can touch the toe of the bottom foot.] Keeping your bottom hip lifted to help stabilize your body, reach your top arm towards the ceiling (c). Hold the side plank for 15 seconds (easier) or 30 seconds (harder). Switch sides

Congratulations to Victoria Strand who is our Member of the Month. Victoria who trains with Fit Lab’s personal trainer Michael Lancaster, is consistently in the gym getting great results and pushing herself to achieve awesome fitness levels. Well done Victoria!!!

Employee of the month

Alan Walters is our employee of the month. Alan has been with the Fit Lab for six years and has gone from strength to strength. Alan finds himself consistently busy with a great client base.

Lifeguard Training

David’s Exercise of the month The TRX Side Plank is an incredibly effective and demanding exercise that requires complete core coordination and tremendous strength from the quadratus lumborum and obliques.

Well done Alan!

Our lifeguards are keeping in top condition by putting themselves through a weekly training routine. They are here at your service and they are keeping in great shape to help provide the best possible service. Great work guys keep it going!

Healthy Regards Andy Meech Head of Sports & Leisure

W

ith bikini season already in full swing and summer holidays so close we can smell the coconut oil and it’s time to make sure that your beach body is at its absolute best. Combining almost 12 years of pampering experience, SensAsia Urban Spa is launching its best-ever body tightening treatment package. The Full Monty is an intense, 90-minute treatment combination using celebrity favourite, UK-born product line, Mio Skincare. SensAsia has selected the completely organic range that Khloé Kardashian recently said she “used every day for a year”, to effectively target, tone and inject a new, overall ‘fit feeling’ into cellulite-prone areas including the hips, upper arms, chest, bust and stomach.

The Full Monty begins with triplestrength exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, before powerful SensAsia Urban Spa massage techniques and a beautiful, arganrich and age-defying blend of 10 essential oils – including Safflower Seed, Jojoba Seed and Sweet Almond – is used to radically activate circulation. A mineral-rich rubberised algae mask is then applied to the body – including active ingredients such as fat-melting Laminara Digitata, energising Guarana Caffeine and circulation-boosting Horsetail Extract – to firm and tighten the skin matrix, before an indulgent deep tissue massage completes the treatment.
