We are very excited to enter the second year of our partnership with the Dublin International Film Festival. This year’s lineup is one of the most packed and diverse to date, with nearly 40% of the films directed by women, a strong representation from the LGBTQ+ community, a wide range of world cinema and of course, the very best of Irish Film. This rich and exciting programme is a reminder of the power of film to showcase the different ways stories can inspire, entertain and empower. At Virgin Media we are invested in helping Ireland discover great entertainment– whether it’s discovering a hidden gem, being the first to see a new release or perking up a commute with a box set on the go. We know that Irish people love film, and through this partnership we want to help Irish audiences discover the best of Irish and international cinema while connecting even more people to Ireland’s premier film festival. We are thrilled that Innocent Boy, the winning entry of Virgin Media Discovers, a short film competition launched by Virgin Media in 2019, will have its world premiere at this year’s film festival. Whether you are a regular film festival-goer or a first-timer, get ready to discover different at the 2020 Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival.
The Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival exists to delight and challenge Irish audiences with a unique festival experience. This is no ordinary trip to the movies. In this programme, you will find a diverse selection of cinematic gems and filmmaker events designed to be shared with your fellow film-lovers. 2020 is the second year of our title sponsorship with Virgin Media. Building on last year’s success, this partnership allows us to expand the scope and depth of experience of the festival – enabling a broader audience to truly “Discover Different”. I would like to acknowledge the support of our partners and sponsors as well as our long-term funding partners, the Arts Council and Screen Ireland. The Festival cannot happen without their ongoing encouragement. The passion you’ll see on screen is replicated in the extraordinary festival team, backed by a committed band of volunteers whose sole aim is to ensure that you have an exceptional experience. My fellow board members are a group of people representing a diversity of thought, experience and talent united by a love of cinema and a commitment to give Irish audiences a world-class festival. As always, the most important thanks go to you, the audience. Simply put, we are here because of you. Whether you’re dipping your toe or diving in, we promise you’ll discover something special.

Director’s Introduction —
Welcome to the 2020 Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival – a 12 day extravaganza of cinema and an opportunity to see the very best of world cinema and film talent in Dublin. Our Irish film programme is one of the strongest in years, with a wonderful line up of features, documentaries and shorts. I must highlight both our Opening Night film, Lorcan Finnegan’s superb Vivarium, and our Closing Night film, Phyllida Lloyd and Clare Dunne’s heartbreaking Herself – plus a special mention of Tom O’Sullivan’s Arracht, which will tour to venues around the country during the festival. This year marks the second year of our Documentary Competition, and we have a wonderful line-up this year which includes a mini focus on portraits of artists – a subject at the heart of both Reel Arts films this year. Contemporary cinema is celebrated with a stellar lineup of world cinema accompanied by some of the most dazzling film talents, including Charlie Kaufman, Trine Dyrholm, Pawel Pawilowski, Marjane Satrapi and Alice Winocour. Our panoramic sweep of contemporary world cinema includes a surprising number of superb British debut features which belies the fears that the political discord of recent years would impede rather than inspire creativity. This year’s festival was inspired by 2020 – the opportunity to review the past with fresh eyes – as well as by the monumental documentary, Women Make Film. We are excited to present a curated retrospective of rare female-directed features from around the world, starting with two spectacular silent films from 1922.
Looking forward, the festival is keenly aware of the need to support and nurture the future of filmmakers. Our new initiative First Frame spearheads this effort by targeting third level film students across Ireland. Produced with the input of all the relevant institutions, this year’s programme will include workshops and a film student competition. We will celebrate Federico Fellini’s centenary with a series of musical tributes across the city, and we will bring filmmakers and audiences together in seminars, debates and screenings across the 12 day festival. Through industry events and public discussions, film quiz and pop up concerts, we hope that there is something for everyone and that you can find some time to join us. As ever this festival has an array of partners – we would like to recognize our title sponsor Virgin Media for their dynamic and vital support for this important arts event; The Arts Council, our core funder, who has supported us since the very start; the Merrion Hotel, which is the reason our guests never want to leave Dublin; Screen Ireland; Screen Skills Ireland; Creative Europe; all our partners and of course the embassies and organisations who help us bring the event to screens. A huge thanks to all our venues, our distributors and of course the festival team and board of directors. Gráinne Humphreys Festival Director

Picture House The Festival’s outreach programme Picture House brings the film festival experience to those in health care facilities who can’t easily access the big screen. Donating to Picture House supports the ongoing costs of the programme and allows us to bring the magic of film to more people around the country. For more info see www.diff.ie/giving
Picture House is one of the brightest things about this festival. I’ve seen it make people laugh, cry, remember. It engages them in a get together otherwise beyond their reach. I’m proud to be part of something so vital. Brenda Fricker, Picture House Patron

Thursday 27th Feb / 10:00 – 18:00 / Light House Cinema Each year, Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival takes place in venues across the capital city while a film tour criss-crosses the entire country. Alongside its industry and general public audiences, the festival targets the 17 third-level institutions across Ireland that offer film-related courses in order to encourage students to attend the films and events that comprise our programme and encourage film appreciation. In 2020, the Festival forays into the student film world in a brand new way with First Frame, an expanded student film initiative and competition. First Frame is built upon a carefully curated selection of short films made by thirdlevel students in Ireland and begins with a morning of talks and workshops, followed by afternoon screening sessions. The day caps off with an awards reception where the winning student short film is announced. The festival would like to acknowledge the support of The Walt Disney Company, Ireland and are excited to present our First Frame event in association with Disney.Pixar ONWARD. — “We are delighted to partner with Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival on their 1st First Frame event. What an innovative concept. Disney.Pixar’s ONWARD is a perfect fit given it is the tale of two teenage elf brothers, who embark on a quest to find if there’s still some magic left in the world so they can spend one day with their father, who had died when they were too young to remember him. We wish all those entering the First Frame competition luck.” Trish Long, Vice President of The Walt Disney Company, Ireland

The film goes to dark and dramatic places in its story of sexual politics and betrayal.
In her director’s statement for the film, el-Toukhy describes Queen of Hearts as the story of a tragic fall from grace and says how the burden of making mistakes that hurt others was a theme she wanted to explore. “That’s how it is for most people: our flaws and insufficiencies define us. They help us grow if we have the capacity to admit our errors, but if we are not capable of doing so they can taint and shatter us, and eventually create great inner loneliness.” Trine Dyrholm in attendance Followed by Volta Ceremony

Les Misérables Festival Highlight — Info: Sat 29 Feb / Cineworld 17 / 11:00 / 1hr 42m Director: Ladj Ly / 2019 Country: France Writer: Alexis Manenti, Giordano Gederlini, Ladj Ly Cast: Alexis Manenti, Damien Bonnard, Djibril Zonga
A thrilling drama set in Montfermeil, a working-class district on the outskirts of Paris, Les Misérables was selected as France’s Best International Feature Film entry for the Oscars. That is, of course, the same district that features in Victor Hugo’s classic tale, and which director Ladj Ly references in his contemporary feature. Set around a small group of policemen who routinely patrol one of the toughest estates in the district, it unfolds through the eyes of a new recruit, Stéphane (Damien Bonnard), who is shaken
by the unpredictable and volatile nature of day-to-day life at his new posting. Even more shocking to him is the routine corruption of the two senior officers he’s been tasked with learning from. It’s a tale of power structures and struggles in an environment which is tested to its very limit. The Los Angeles Times’ Kenneth Turan wrote: “What makes Les Misérables such an immersive experience is the crackling sense of authenticity that is the film’s birthright”.

Tilda Swinton, Jane Fonda and Thandie Newton are among the narrators of Women Make Film, Mark Cousins’ epic, 14-hour opus on female filmmakers. It is split into segments that can be viewed as stand-alone films. Shot and edited by Cousins, the meticulously researched documentary is told over 40 chapters and emerges as a lovingly-made, shrewdly alternative take on the history of cinema. It’s a story that spans thirteen decades and five continents, featuring over 700 film clips from hundreds of female directors. Four years in the making, the documentary stands as an epic exploration of the history of cinema. It all unfolds through the lens of – and the perspective of – some of the world’s greatest female filmmakers. Other well-known contributors to the documentary include Debra Winger, Kerry Fox, Adjoa Andoh and Sharmila Tagore. The film is executive produced by Tilda Swinton.
Documentary
For its screening in Dublin, Cousins has divided the 14-hour documentary into five separate screenings, which can be viewed together or as standalone films.
Programme 4: Explores how directors handle melodrama, sci-fi, depictions of hell, tension, stasis, what is left out, story reveals, memory, and time.
Programme 1: Discovers how directors achieve tone, believability, introduce characters, capture conversations, and handle framing and tracking shots.
Programme 5: Shows how directors depict interiors, the existential, love, death, endings, and song and dance.
Programme 2: Looks at how directors stage scenes, capture journeys, discoveries, depict the adult child, exercise economy, editing, point of view, and close-ups. Programme 3: Examines how directors portray bodies, sexuality, home, religion, work, politics, changing gears, and comedy.
At a time when there are growing calls for gender equality and diversity in film and other mediums, Women Make Film shows in rich detail the lengths female filmmakers have gone to and the obstacles they’ve overcome, historically and throughout the world, to tell great stories. A decade following the writer, director and actor’s last film, he again shows his knack for physical comedy in a drama that explores not only the ongoing struggle in Palestine, but also of the emigrant Palestinian and where they see their place in the world.
It Must Be Heaven expands from its opening scenes set in Palestine and Nazareth before moving its story to the great cities of Paris and New York, where the migrant explores cultural differences, the thrill of being a stranger in a new environment, and the charms and realities each city has to offer. Trouble is, the siblings are not very good at magic – and struggle to conjure up the rest of their dad following a trick that goes badly wrong. The studio has a reputation for creating funny and emotionally resonant stories, and the film is partly inspired by Onward director Dan Scanlon’s own relationship 124
with his brother. Scanlon’s previous films include the hit prequel Monster’s University. Onward’s story is set in a suburban fantasy world meticulously created by Disney Pixar animators, bringing visually to life a story about two siblings setting out to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world. Charlie Chaplin Shorts Special Event — Info: Sun 01 Mar / Light House 1 / 13:00 / 1hr 23m / Cert TBC Director: Charlie Chaplin / 1916, 1917 Country: United States
Writer: Charlie Chaplin Cast: Charlie Chaplin With live musical accompaniment from Serge Bromberg
As one of the most loved and well known comedians of cinema, Charlie Chaplin may be a character that needs no introduction — but in inventing the character known as The Little Tramp, Chaplin conquered early Hollywood and even built his own studios where he could be in complete control over his universe. Here he made legendary films such as The Dictator, Modern Times, and City Lights. He also created shorts, and we’re delighted to present these three newly restored gems.
The Immigrant Spending weeks at sea with the tides going high, Chaplin wobbles back and forth on ship trying to stave off the sea sickness and spend his time as well as he can. Upon reaching the shore of New York, he visits a fancy restaurant and meets a lady in distress. Being broke in the city of dreams makes it a lot less inviting than he had hoped for, but Chaplin always finds a way.
The Adventurer As in so many of his films, Chaplin wrestles with authority and police officers — here as a convict on the run who ends up in a very rich family after saving the mother from drowning. The husband of the daughter is not impressed by the new hero’s presence and does everything in his power to get rid of him when he finds out he’s a convict.
The Floorwalker Trying to make his way through a department store, our main character causes all the mayhem that we can expect from him as he partially or completely demolishes the store while getting entangled in a vicious scheme by the company owners. Filmmakers in attendance

Trolls World Tour Festival Highlight — Info: Sun 08 Mar / Light House 1 / 11:00 / 1hr 30m / Cert TBC Director: David P. Smith, Walt Dohrn / 2020 Country: United States Writer: Glenn Berger, Jonathan Aibel Cast: Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Rachel Bloom, Ozzy Osbourne
Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake lead a big-name voice cast in the latest adventure featuring the popular DreamWorks Animation characters. A follow-up to the studio’s 2016 hit, Trolls World Tour sees the much-loved children’s characters hitting new musical heights. When Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) make the remarkable discovery that they are just one of six different Troll tribes scattered throughout various lands, it sets them on a thrilling
musical adventure. The tribes, they learn, are devotees of many different types of music – including funk, country, techno, classical, pop and rock. Variety is the spice of life – but then the Trolls learn that hardrockers Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) and her dad, King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne) want to mute all other types of music and let rock reign supreme. They all join forces in a bid to prove to the rock queen that contrasting styles brings musical harmony.
