URBAN POLICY PROPOSAL Diversification of the project investment sources and housing units to achieve income and age diversity EXISTING
NEW
UN-Habitat ‘‘Student design competition for Kenya’s towns’’ (Runner-up) It was the outstanding experience of the international, cross-sectoral and self-organized teamwork. None of us ever worked together before. We strongly believed that our mission was to find alternative social, environmental and economic solutions for the Thika expansion. Also, we tried to avoid shiny visions and to be as much close to Kenya’s reality as it was possible. This project gave me the chance to express myself and test my abilities in several areas: - In the beginning, I focused on setting up the overall project vision. Later I moved to the urban policy part. This gave me the first opportunity to use findings from master thesis research and came up with alternative financial tools, which we tested with our economist team mate. - Due to our team diversity, from time to time, I naturally became a mediator between hyperactive and shy team members. - During the last design phase, I developed an extensive part of project graphics. As a result of our work, our proposal became first for Thika. In the final among 7 proposals for different Kenia’s cities, we came second. The jury noticed that our project is the most suitable for implementation. This result gave me and 2 other team members the opportunity to represent IHS at Habitat III conference in Quito in 2016. URBAN POLICY PROPOSAL
Current situation
This project grew from our (I and Juliana Giraldo) competition proposal for “Prijsuitreiking Schalkwijk Midden where we again became second. Later we cooperated with Atelier Dutch to adapt our initial idea to the circumstances of De Stiger (the neighbourhood in Almere, Netherlands). For me, it was again a chance to use findings and observations from my master thesis. Initially, I was responsible for the urban policy and finance part. Later on, all together we developed the basic ideas further.
Issue new rights & responsibilities
All research and graphic parts of the submission we distributed equally. As well as others, I took part in presentations and speech preparations and was co-presenter of the project several times. Team Oleksandra Tkachenko Juliana Giraldo Sanabria Atelier Dutch (David de Kool)

RESEARCH
FREELAND OF OOSTERWOLD Oosterwold, Almere, NL
This was my master thesis research (at IHS). I started it with an aim to explore the core of the combination of the bottom-up and top-down large-scale development. Among that, I wanted to use this chance of studying in the Netherlands to observe the core of local development process, to be able to adapt this experience to other circumstances. For this aim, the MVRDV’s project “Almere Oosterwold” was a perfect case study. I had a chance to explore the development process after urban planners left the project. Diverse stakeholders shared with me their positive and negative development experience. My research showed that Organic Urban Expansion influences Community Building through Diffusion of innovative strategy; furthermore, the outcome of Community Building influences the outcome of Organic Urban Expansion. This can be used to find the channels of influence on the future of organic development through stakeholders. Supervisor Alexandra Tsatsou

RESEARCH
CITY ANALYSIS
REGION LEVEL Central, disconnected city. The city is in the middle of a gap of transregional centre’s influence.
Kirovohrad, UA My first master research (at KNUBA) was a little bit personal. I decided to dedicate it to my home-city Kropyvnytskyi (back then Kirovohrad), which is somewhat forgotten by the rest of Ukraine’s residents. Furthermore, during this research, I studied the international experience of shrinking cities. And I need to mention, this theory is still neglected in Ukraine. It was important for me to make the city profile, analyse the current situation and try to detect the reasons behind local issues as well as identify the city’s potential on various geographical levels. It was my first complex research. I tried to understand local socio-geographic, spatial, economic, cultural, transport, policy and environmental circumstances.

DETACHED HOUSE Berries garden
Kiev region, UA This house is my very first real and independent project. I must admit that at some point I was even a little bit nervous, especially when the construction works started. First of all, I wanted to understand the life flows in the family, their habits, hobbies and their vision of new life in the new home. It was a nice experience to admit that not everything depends on an architect. I had to face a lot of externalities, and I am happy that I worked closely with a client and contractors at that moment.

It was important for me to take into account the local environment; combine new technologies and local building traditions; use mostly natural materials and keep the price affordable. During this project I was responsible for: - Concept design - Detailed design - Materialisation - Search for materials suppliers - Basic material calculations - Construction supervision - Some negotiations with suppliers - Landscape concept design - Basic interior guidelines The owners have been living in this house for 5 years already. For me, the most important thing was to hear, that they are proud of their house and feel really comfortable there. They are still developing and improving their house and constantly ask me for guidance and advice.
