For decades the “Blue Cross in Key West” stood as a beacon of hope and Christian faith over our community. Originally built in 1937 to commemorate the Centennial of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, the cross overlooks Mt. Olivet cemetery on land that was once part of the Bishop’s Farm as it was known.
In 1962 the Knights of Columbus and other partners added the blue neon lighting that made it visible for miles and miles. That really made it a landmark and very unique as well. Travelers entering Dubuque and Dubuquers returning home were delighted to see it as a sign that they were welcome or welcomed home.
Over the years the neon lights were constantly needing repairs as the lighting was fragile and storms would frequently break them, resulting in constant update. In addition, the trees surrounding the cross grew tall and made the cross almost impossible to see, especially when the leaves were on the trees.
Recently a gentleman who lived where they could see the cross from their living room window shared a touching story. Years ago when his wife was sick and there were no more treatment options, they had hospice services and moved the bed to their living room where they prayed nightly while viewing the cross. He said it gave his wife peace and hope.
Centennial Cross Incorporated is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed with the purpose of rebuilding, relighting and maintaining the cross and they have been fundraising to complete that task so that future generations can also find the faith and hope they need in the cross.
In June a new cross that stands 137’ tall and is lighted with blue LED lighting was erected and is now shining brightly. It is a completely new structure with all new concrete foundation, new steel and all new wiring. This structure was designed to last for many many years.
Conlon Construction was hired to be the general contractor for the project. “We’re proud to have been selected for this project, especially since my grandfather, R.F. Conlon, built the original cross in 1937,” said Tim Conlon, Chief Executive Officer of Conlon Construction.
Fundraising for the project has been ongoing for many years and to date just over $280,000 has been collected of the $350,000 needed. “We are asking for the public to help us to reach our goal,” said Tim McCaffery, President of Centennial Cross, Incorporated.
An information display and reflection bench will be established in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with information and history of the cross and more. Donors of $10,000 or more will be honored on the display as well. All donors of $100 or more will be listed on the official website and donations can be made in memory of loved ones.
