Xeriscape landscaping or, “xeriscaping,” by definition, is landscaping designed specifically for areas that are susceptible to drought, or for properties where water conservation is practiced. Derived from the Greek xeros meaning dry, the term means literally dry landscape. Xeriscape Not Zeroscape Note that “xeriscape” is pronounced as if it begins with the letter Z, which sometimes leads to the misspelling “zeroscape,” as if signifying zero landscaping. This is unfortunate because the word zero leads the mind to think of nothing—a landscape with nothing in it, or nothing pretty presumably. But xeriscape landscaping can be quite beautiful as well as captivating in its textures, colors, shapes and sizes. Xeriscaping and Desert Plants In fact, as most people employ the term, xeriscaping need not be limited to desert plants such as certain kinds of cactus and succulent plants. Rather, the practice allows those of us in the Bay Area, at least, to use a wide variety of attractive plants but insists on common-sense measures that will help conserve water, such as grouping plants with similar water requirements together. Not only does this practice save you money, but it can also save your plants since many a plant is killed through over-watering. Even if you are not trying to save water, it makes sense to segregate “thirsty” plants from those that want far less water.

A common element in xeriscape landscaping is the reduction of lawn grass areas since lawn grass is often one of the worst offenders against water conservation. Another widespread tactic is the deployment of native plants because they are adapted to the local climate and consequently require less human-supplied water. Xeric Plants Plants most suited to xeriscape landscaping are sometimes referred to as “xeric” plants. These are plants with low water requirements that therefore handle drought well. Of course, drought-tolerance is relative. A plant considered droughttolerant in the Northeastern U.S. might be baked to a crisp in desert country. Being in the Bay Area, we have a multitude of micro-climates so your options vary from Brentwood to Alameda. Keep that consideration in mind as you browse drought-tolerant trees, shrubs and ground covers. Some colorful choices from these and other plant categories might include: Sunburst honey locust (tree), Red bird of paradise (shrub), Angelina sedum (ground cover), Zebra grass (ornamental grass), and Lewisia (perennial). 7 Planning Principles Planning and design require the skilled coordination of xeriscape principles. When planning your new garden, we strongly encourage you to consider the following low-water use gardening principles:


1. Planning & Design Organizing a garden for aesthetics, practicality and, most of all, water efficiency, can be complicated and is easier with the assistance of a professional. Be sure to engage in plenty of research by either checking out xeriscapes online, or landscapes in your neighborhood that you particularly enjoy. Work with your landscape architect or designer to create a tropical, cottage, Mediterranean, or any other style xeriscape garden you desire. 2. Practical Turf Areas Turf is the most water-thirsty landscape component and best to be avoided if possible. Design small lawn areas for practical purposes only, such as play, maintenance access and light traffic. For some homeowners, a front lawn is unnecessary and can be replaced with trees, shrubs, boulders and pathways, or mulched areas. 3. Efficient Irrigation Many recent innovations in irrigation technology enable slow, steady and specific water application. Look for words such as ‘low gallonage’ or ‘low application rate.’ Consider drip systems for shrubs and trees, and always locate turf on a separate valve.

CONTRA COSTA WATER DISTRICT’S WATER-EFFICIENT DEMONSTRATION GARDEN Located at the District’s Main Office in Concord, the garden has more than 50 different types of plants on display and is a great example of xeriscape landscaping. The garden uses half the water of the lawn it replaces. Visit anytime to get ideas and pick up the resource guide. Gardening in Contra Costa County is full of local information about planning and enjoying a beautiful water-saving garden.

4. Soil Analysis The addition of organic matter to the soil increases water retention and penetration. Get to know your soil and amend it prior to planting. A soil test will guide you in amending your soil. 5. Mulching About 2 to 3 inches of mulch will keep soil cool, reduce evapotranspiration and weed growth. Mulch can be rocks, wood chips, bark, or shredded wood. 6. Appropriate Plants There is a place for every plant in a xeriscape garden when located correctly. Group plants according to their water and sun needs. This is called hydrozoning. There are many interesting and colorful low-water-use plants now available. Take advantage of these whenever possible. 7. Ongoing Maintenance Seasonal irrigation adjustments and efficiency checks are maintenance practices that save water. Organic fertilizers and composting will improve soil texture and maintain vigorous plant growth. Plenty of environmental, conservation and monetary reasons exist for why we should all convert to xeriscape landscaping, but one of the most-loved reasons: no more lawn mowing!

This tangy simple recipe livens up pork chops and is perfect for summer dinners. INGREDIENTS RUB • 4 teaspoons olive oil • ¼ cup dark brown sugar • 1 tablespoon garlic powder • 1 tablespoon salt • 1 tablespoon freshly ground pepper • 1 teaspoon dried sage • 4 double-cut, bone-in pork loin chops

SALSA • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 small red onion • 4-5 fresh peaches, peeled and diced • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice • ½ teaspoon lime zest • ½ teaspoon salt • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro

INSTRUCTIONS RUB In a small bowl, stir together 4 teaspoons oil, brown sugar, garlic powder, 1 tablespoon salt, pepper and sage. Rub mixture onto both sides of each chop. Place chops in a covered bowl or 2-gallon resealable plastic bag and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or up to overnight. SALSA In a medium pan over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add onion and sauté for 2 minutes. Add peaches, honey and lime juice; reduce heat to medium-low and sauté another 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in lime zest, salt and cilantro. Set aside GRILL Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grill chops until an instant-read thermometer registers 150 degrees Fahrenheit when inserted into the thickest part of the chop, 10 to 12 minutes per side. Transfer chops to a clean plate and cover with foil. Let rest 5 minutes. Serve warm topped with peach salsa. YIELDS 4

PERFECT SUMMER SALAD! Rotisserie Chicken Strawberry Panzanella. This main course version of an Italian bread salad gets interpreted through a California lens, with the appetizing addition of shredded chicken, fresh strawberries, cilantro and toasted pepitas.

INGREDIENTS • ¾ lb. Italian bread, torn into 1-inch pieces (about 8 cups) • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • Salt

• 3 lb. rotisserie chicken, meat shredded to about 4 cups • ½ cup salted toasted pepitas (small pumpkin seeds) • Balsamic glaze

• Freshly ground pepper • ½ small red onion, diced • ¼ cup Champagne vinegar • ¼ cup sherry or red wine vinegar • 2 romaine hearts, torn into bite-sized pieces (or 8 oz. bag fresh spinach) • 2 medium sized tomatoes, diced • 2 Persian cucumbers, diced • 1 cup strawberries, hulled and chopped • 1 cup basil leaves • 2 tablespoons chopped dill • 1 cup fresh mozzarella, cut into bite-sized pieces

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 350°. On a large rimmed baking sheet, toss the bread with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes, until golden brown and crisp. Let cool. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, toss the onion with both vinegars and let stand for 10 minutes. Whisk in the remaining 1/4 cup olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Add the romaine, tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, basil, dill, mozzarella, chicken and the toasted bread. Toss well. Transfer the salad to a platter then sprinkle with pepitas and drizzle with balsamic glaze. Add a glass of crisp sauvignon blanc and dinner is served!
