2024 2023

AT THE DUGONI SCHOOL

IT’S BEEN QUITE A YEAR!

Congratulations to the Dugoni School family for all of your accomplishments across academics, clinical services, research, philanthropy and service to communities near and far. It’s a testament to your example and influence that our graduates have such a positive impact on the profession, including California Dental Association President Dr. Carliza Marcos ’92, California Dental Hygienists’ Association President-Elect Ms. Angela Gomez ’14, Alumni Association President Dr. Amanda Rae Kronquist ’15, Dugoni School Foundation President Dr. John Kim ’04 and ASDA District 11 Trustee Dr. Robert Zhou ’24, to name a few. I know that the newest graduates of our Class of 2024 — and those who follow in their footsteps — will also continue to be outstanding leaders in the years to come.

Thank you to all the members of the Dugoni School family — and our many friends and supporters — for contributing to a year filled with accomplishments and impact!

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

PRIMED FOR CLINICAL RESEARCH!

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research of the NIH awarded a fiveyear, $3.8 million grant to train the next generation of clinical oral health researchers. Funding supports two annual training programs, equipping students to translate research into practice. This year, 170 first-year students were trained in the PacificStanford fundamentals of clinical research, and a cohort of 60 alumni, faculty and students will participate in a comprehensive clinical research program starting in September 2024. Clinical research studies in the early detection of oral cancer, the use of ultrasound technology in sleep medicine, and a saliva biobank investigating genetic markers in erosive tooth wear and dental caries are also funded by the program.

The Center for Innovation and Translation (CIT) is driving progress in healthcare and education by promoting impactful innovation and translating clinical research into practice. This year, the CIT secured commercial funding from multiple companies to support research projects in areas including early oral cancer detection, assessing EdTech tools in dental implant education, novel products for xerostomia relief, and AI platforms for treatment planning and caries detection. The CIT is currently managing 14 projects in collaboration with 12 different investigators.

Faculty member Dr. Cassio Silva was awarded an $800,000 grant from the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program for a three-year research project investigating how tobacco affects infection and inflammation in the oral cavity. Better understanding of the cellular mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of tobacco-related periodontitis could lead to new treatments for smoking-induced diseases.

The annual American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) San Francisco Symposium hosted at the Dugoni School brought together top dental researchers from the Dugoni School, Stanford and UCSF.
