Head Coach • 19th Season North Miami Beach, Fla. Florida (1993), Wayne State (1996)
Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart enters her 19th season at the helm of the University of Denver gymnastics program in 2017. Since arriving in 1999, Kutcher-Rinehart has led Denver to 18-consecutive appearances at NCAA Regionals and three NCAA Nationals team berths. Kutcher-Rinehart’s teams made program history with back-to-back appearances at the NCAA National Championships in 2007 and 2008. In her career, Kutcher-Rinehart has had at least one individual qualify for NCAA Nationals in 17 consecutive years--including the program’s first-ever NCAA individual national champion: Nina McGee on floor exericse in 2016. Since Kutcher-Rinehart became head coach, the Pioneers have finished the season in the top 25 every season, including seven seasons in the top 15. Under her tutelage, the Pioneers have broken the team scoring record on every event

- including highest team total of 197.875 on February 14, 2004 - and each of the top 10 scores in school history have come under her watch. The 2016 season was one of the program’s most successful, punctuated by senior Nina McGee’s NCAA floor title - the first in school history. Additional school records fell in 2016 under Kutcher-Rinehart’s leadership. The Pioneers spent back-to-back weeks ranked No. 10 in the nation for the first time ever in an RQS poll and finished with an RQS of 196.725, the secondhighest in program history. For only the second season, Denver had more than two team scores of 197 or higher, including the program’s second-highest team score (197.525). In 2016, DU became an affiliate member of the Big 12 Conference, a transition in which KutcherRinehart was instrumental. DU made it to straight years without counting a fall toward the final team score in any meet in 2016. The 2015 Pioneers finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation, the team’s highest final ranking since 2010. Kutcher-Rinehart’s streak of having at least one gymnast qualify to NCAA Nationals continued as Nina McGee competed in the all-around, finishing 11th overall. McGee qualified to event finals and tied for second on floor, equaling the best finish for a Pioneer at the Division I NCAA National Championships through the 2015 season. During the 2014 season, Kutcher-Rinehart’s Pioneers finished the season ranked No. 18 in the nation after posting the team’s third highest RQS in history with a 196.205. The team finished tied for 14th in the nation on beam, a team best, as well as in the top 25 on all events. She led DU to the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference title where the Pioneers set a school record on vault with a 49.475. Earlier in the season, the team tied the sixth-highest score on floor (49.475 on March 15) and the seventh-highest bars score (49.300 on January 31). For the 15th consecutive season, Kutcher-Rinehart’s team sent at least one individual to Nationals where Moriah Martin competed for a thirdstraight year, finishing seventh in the all-around in the semifinals and earning Second-Team
All-American honors. The Pioneers finished the 2014 season a perfect 6-0 at home and only counted one fall for the entire season. In 2013, Kutcher-Rinehart led the Pioneers to finish the regular season with the 15th-best Regional Qualifying Score in the nation, thanks to a 196.470 mark, the highest RQS in program history. The team finished No. 20 team in the nation with a 391.745 National Qualifying Score. The Pioneers consistently ranked in the top 20, being ranked as high as No. 12 during the season. In Denver’s opener, Kutcher-Rinehart notched her 250th victory as the Pioneers head coach. Kutcher-Rinehart led the program to its 15th NCAA Regional in her 15 seasons as a Pioneer. Junior Moriah Martin advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the second-consecutive season and eventually becoming Denver’s fifth postseason All-American. The 14-woman squad in 2012 turned in the second-highest Regional Qualifying Score in school history (196.090) to finish the regular season ranked 14th, tying the program’s thirdhighest mark since the GymInfo Poll began in 1997. Sophomore Moriah Martin extended the Pioneers streak of sending at least one individual to Nationals, tallying a 39.200 in the all-around at the Champaign Regional to punch her ticket to the NCAA Semifinals in Duluth, Ga. KutcherRinehart led the Pioneers to the University’s first Western Athletic Conference Championship, after posting a 196.350 at the event. In 2011, the Pioneers hosted the NCAA North Central Regional Championships for the first time since 2007, playing host to Arkansas,

HEAD COACH MELISSA KUTCHER-RINEHART Florida, Boise State, Arizona and BYU. Junior Brianna Springer recorded a score of 38.250 in the all-around competition to secure her secondstraight trip to the NCAA Championships, while freshman Jorie Hall scored a career-best 9.900 on the balance beam which allowed her to make her first appearance at the National meet. At the NCAA Semifinals, Springer finished 17th overall in the all-around, and Hall finished 35th on the balance beam. The Pioneers finished fourth as a team at the Regional Championships, and claimed victories over No. 16 Ohio State, No. 10 Nebraska, and No. 12 Arkansas earlier in the season. In 2010, Kutcher-Rinehart and the Pioneers posted a season-high 196.175 in the NCAA North Central Regional Championships to finish in third place. Senior Kelley Hennigan and Springer represented the Pioneers at the NCAA Championships as individual all-around qualifiers. Springer and Hennigan placed 11th and 20th in the all-around, respectively, in Session II. DU also recorded a 49.325 on beam at Air Force on March 22, the second-highest beam score in team history. In 2009, the Pioneers had two individual all-around qualifiers in the NCAA National Championships in Hennigan and senior Jessica López. López, who was the North Central Regional champion, finished sixth on vault in the NCAA Event Finals. Lopez earned All-American honors for her performance. The 2008 season saw Kutcher-Rinehart lead the Pioneers to a second-consecutive berth to the NCAA Championships. Needing to answer her critics that DU could not sustain its success, her team edged host Penn State in the final rotation of the meet at the Northeast Regional Championships and went on to a 12th place finish at Nationals. In 2007, and following six-consecutive years of near misses, DU finally returned to Nationals for the first time since 2001 and Kutcher-Rinehart helped López become the first three-time Division I All-America gymnast in school history. The Pioneers finished in fifth place in Session II of the NCAA Semifinals and 10th overall, the best finish in school history. DU scored a 195.575, behind host Utah (197.325), Stanford (197.200), UCLA (196.475), LSU (196.275), and in front of Michigan (195.100). López finished tied for first on uneven bars to become a first-team All-American, DU’s firstever on uneven bars, and finished tied for fifth on uneven bars with a 9.9 and tied for third with a 9.85 on floor exercise. She competed in the NCAA Event Finals, finishing 15th on beam and 16th on floor. DU made it to the NCAA Championships thanks to its second place finish at the NCAA North Central Regional Championships in front of 3,876 fans in Magness Arena, the third time DU hosted on its home floor. Kutcher-Rinehart was honored
as the North Central Region Coach of the Year. In 2005, the Pioneers finished with their highest ranking since 2002 and recorded a schoolrecord seven-meet winning streak in which the team went 11-0. DU also upset No. 12 Arizona State on Senior Night and went 20-8 overall, matching the 2000 team’s win total. The Pioneers finished fourth at the North Central Region Championships and finished the season ranked No. 16 thanks to their 195.250 RQS, the fourthbest score among non-advancing teams. Up until 2007, the 2001 season stood as KutcherRinehart’s shining moment at Denver, as she led the Pioneers to their first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Championships, becoming the first small private school in NCAA history to qualify. The Pioneers earned their first-ever berth by virtue of their second-place finish at the NCAA North Central Region Championships, nearly pulling off an unthinkable upset of a Utah team that, at that time, had not lost on its home floor since 1979. Though the Pioneers finished 12th in their firstever trip to nationals, Kutcher-Rinehart coached her second-consecutive individual All-American in Ashley Shible, who just missed becoming Kutcher-Rinehart’s first individual athlete to qualify for an event final. In 2000, her second season at DU, KutcherRinehart had three all-around performers qualify for the national meet and coached her first All-American, as Jenny Ebdon earned secondteam honors on the floor exercise at the NCAA Championships.
championships (1994-97) and placed as high as second at the NCAA National Championships (1995). In 1997, Kutcher-Rinehart was a key component in Michigan putting out its then best-ever balance beam performance at the NCAA Championships with three gymnasts earning First-Team All-America honors. Kutcher-Rinehart was a two-time recipient of the University of Michigan’s Louise Cooley Sutherland award as the top women’s assistant coach. She is active as a member of the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W) and has previously served as the awards chairperson for the organization. In addition, she has served as a member of the NCAA Gymnastics Committee. An all-around competitor with the University of Florida women’s gymnastics squad from 198992, Kutcher-Rinehart helped the Gators to four straight top-12 NCAA Championship finishes. The Gators’ best national finish during her career was sixth in 1991. A native of North Miami Beach, Fla., KutcherRinehart holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Florida (1993), and earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. (1996). She is a professional member of USA Gymnastics. Kutcher-Rinehart is married to Todd Rinehart, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment at DU. The couple has two children, William (11) and Ella (10). The family resides in Aurora, Colo.
In her first season with the Pioneers, KutcherRinehart led Denver to a No. 16 ranking and a fourth-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Region 2 Gymnastics Championships, at the time, the highest finish at a Division I postseason competition. For her efforts, she was named Region 2 Coach of the Year in her first season as a head coach. Kutcher-Rinehart was named the program’s fourth head coach on August 17, 1998. She came to Denver from the University of Michigan, where she was an assistant for five seasons. 2016 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2016 season was one for the record books for the University of Denver women’s gymnastics team. By the end of the season, the team had scored some of the highest team totals and national rankings in school history, highlighted by the program’s first-ever NCAA individual national champion.
and secured four All-Big 12 Tournament honors. For the fourth consecutive season, Denver finished the year ranked inside the top 25 on all four events: No. 10 on floor, tied for No. 10 on bars, No. 15 on vault and No. 22 on beam.
During the team’s third meet of the season, the Pioneers combined for a team total of 49.200 on vault, which would tie for the highest event mark of the season.
DU did not count a single fall on any event all season long—making it two years a row.
CONSISTENT START TO 2016
DU began the season with five consecutive wins, beginning with the home opener on January 9. The meet was punctuated by the final routine of the night: McGee’s first career 10.0 on floor. DU finished with a 195.375, the team’s highest score in the first meet of the season since 2010. Sophomore Claire Hammen won her first event title (beam) on January 9 in only her second career appearance on the event.
Senior Nina McGee
Pioneers swept the event titles at their second meet of the season. On the road at Iowa, McGee topped the all-around, vault and floor podiums while junior Julia Ross had the meet’s highest scores on bars and beam.
On April 15, senior Nina McGee represented the University of Denver at the NCAA National Championships for the second straight season, competing in the all-around and winning the floor exercise title with a score of 9.950.
Denver’s freshmen made an early impact during the first meets of the season—a trend which would continue throughout 2016. Diana Chesnok set a career high on beam in her first appearance on January 30 at Bowling Green (9.800) and started her streak of competing on vault and bars in every meet. She won her first career title on vault on February 6. Freshman Claire Kern, too, competed on bars in every meet in 2016, including two career-high 9.850s in back-toback meets to open February. Fellow freshman Kaitlyn Schou competed on beam and floor in every meet, setting her floor career high (9.875) at home on February 6 to wrap up DU’s five-meet win streak to start the season.
Despite losing two juniors and top scorers from 2015 to injuries before the end of the first meet—Leah Lomonte and Rachel Fielitz—Denver advanced to its 18th consecutive NCAA Regionals with a Regional Qualifying Score of 196.725—the second-highest RQS in program history and earning the team a No. 2 seed at Regionals for the first time ever. DU would finish the season ranked No. 15 in the nation. DU joined the Big 12 Conference as an affiliate member in 2016, finished second at the Big 12 Championships
Freshman Diana Chesnok
Sophomore Claire Hammen
Freshman Grace Broadhurst added several exhibition performances— including on bars in all but one regular season meet—to add to the team’s depth.

2016 YEAR IN REVIEW FANTASTIC FEBRUARY
The second month of the season saw some of DU’s toughest competition and biggest successes. At the Perfect 10 Challenge on February 12, DU finished second to eventual NCAA National Champion Oklahoma with a 196.000. A week later, the team traveled to Penn State, competing against then-ranked No. 4 Alabama and posting a secondplace finish with a 196.350, which would be DU’s third-highest road score of the regular season.
most career individual titles in school history.
In the school’s first appearance at the Big 12 Championships, DU finished second with a 196.725—the secondhighest road score of the season, behind only the March 6 meet. On bars, Denver tallied a 49.375, its highest team total on the event of the season and tying the second-highest bars score in program history. DU held a No. 10 national ranking for two consecutive weeks in March (the weeks of March 7 and March 14), marking the first time ever the Pioneers held a top 10 ranking in two straight weeks in an RQS poll—and the first time since 2003 that the Pioneers were ranked in the top 10 for consecutive weeks at any point in the season.
Denver finished the month with a quad meet at home on February 27, a meet which is now etched into the history books. DU won the meet with a final team score of 197.525, the secondhighest score in program history. Additionally, the Pioneers posted the second-highest beam score in school history (49.475), tied the fifth-highest score on bars (49.325) and tied the seventh-highest floor score (49.525)

Head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart continued her streak of qualifying the Pioneers to NCAA Regionals in each of her 18 seasons. DU entered the Minneapolis Regional as the No. 2 seed—marking the first time in program history that the Pioneers earned a No. 2 seed.
MORE RECORDS SET IN MARCH
March began with two meets in three days against Minnesota and Air Force (one at home and one in Colorado Springs). For the second meet in a row, McGee scored a perfect 10.0 on floor on March 4 for Senior Night and nearly made it three straight with a 9.975 on March 6 at Air Force. Senior Emily Barrett
McGee scored her second perfect 10.0 on floor during the February 27 meet, adding to her 39.775 all-around performance—which became the highest score in DU Gymnastics history, besting the previous score of 39.725 (Bankhead in 2004 and Kasuga in 2003). McGee won the individual titles on vault, bars, floor and in the all-around, giving her the
Denver scored a 197.050 on March 6 in the second of the two meets —the third highest road score in school history. It marked only the second time ever that DU posted two or more scores of 197.000 or higher in a single season. During the same meet, the Pioneers posted a 49.575 floor total—good enough for fourth highest in program history.

PIONEER HISTORY The Pioneers women’s gymnastics program began later than some of the other Denver women’s varsity sports programs, but rapidly moved to the forefront of the national gymnastics scene. THE 1970’S Gymnastics was recognized as a Denver varsity sport for women in 1975. The first coach was Kathy Stacey. Her drive and spark ignited a fervor for the sport. Stacey, a former national coach in Hong Kong, started with only five gymnasts - Mary Troutman, Kathie Friend, Julia Gwinn, Cassie Boggs and Kim Telander. The Pioneers competed in the United States Gymnastics Federation until 1976. The 1977 season marked the first year Denver was able to field a complete 12-member squad as well as offer athletic scholarships. The Pioneers finished the season with a 3-1 record and won the regional small-college division championships. Donna Pelepchan was the Regional all-around champion. The 1978 season was the beginning of a run that would eventually lead to back-to-back national championships for the infant sport at Denver. The Pioneers placed fourth that year in the AIAW national championships. Melissa Barton, Katrina Stacey and Donna Pelepchan were selected as All-Americans. In 1979, Max Vercruyssen took over the helm and led Denver to a second-place finish in the AIAW National Championships. Jan Rohrer, Donna Mah, Diana Perkins, Barton and Pelepchan were selected as All-Americans that season. The second-place finishes were repeated in 1980 and 1981.
Karen Beer, Heather Earl and Linda Kring finished first, third and fourth respectively on the Bars at the 1983 NCAA Divsion II Championships. All three earned All-America honors.
THE 1980’S It was in 1981 that Dan Garcia took over as

Denver Most Valuable Gymnast award and the prestigious Denver Female Athlete of the Year for four straight years. She was awarded more academic honors than any other top all-around gymnast and she completed her career in 1984 by capturing the highest award for a professional or amateur athlete in Colorado, the Colorado Sportswoman of the Year. In 1984, history was made when the University elected to elevate the varsity women’s gymnastics program to the NCAA Division I level, the first Denver women’s varsity sport ever to do so. THE 1990’S
coach for the Pioneers with the encouragement and help of the departing Vercruyssen. Garcia adopted a more competitive scheduling process, setting up competitions with major Division I programs such as Arizona, Arizona State, Nebraska and Oklahoma. “You don’t get better until you compete with the very best,” said Garcia. And that is exactly what occurred as Denver took a close second at the 1981 Division II AIAW Championships behind Centenary. The following season, dreams came true for the Pioneers. On March 16, 1982, Denver snapped the four-year reign of Centenary to capture the AIAW Division II Championship. It was the first National Title for a University of Denver women’s varsity sport and, to make it more satisfying, it happened at the DU Fieldhouse. Denver’s Karen Beer won the All-Around competition as well as three of the four individual events. Beer, Perkins, Anne Mason, Sonja Fowler and Liz Fudge earned All-America honors. When the AIAW was disbanded in 1982, the Pioneers gymnasts demonstrated that the previous year was no fluke by coming back to win the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1983. Beer repeated her winning performance by capturing the all-around, bars and beam titles. Once again, several Pioneers received All-America honors - Beer, Heather Earl, Linda Kring and Heidi Sjordal. By capturing the All-Around honors at the Division II championships, Beer earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I National Championships at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Her first appearance against Division I competition proved extremely successful, as she finished in the top 20 in the All-Around and tied for second place on bars, making her Denver’s first Division I All-American. Although many fine athletes have participated in the women’s gymnastics program, Karen Beer remains the most decorated individual gymnast in Denver sports history. She claimed the
Jeanne Hoffman was DU’s first gymnast to qualify to Nationals since the program turned Divsion I in 1984.
In 1991, Jeanne Hoffman became the first Denver gymnast to qualify for NCAA Division I National competition since the program was elevated in 1984. Donna Elliot followed her a year later when she qualified for the NCAA Championships in 1992. Katie Nicpon was a two-time Midwest Regional qualifier in 1993 and 1994. As a team, the Pioneers qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional for the first time in 1996. The squad finished seventh in the region and several individuals placed among the top 15 in individual events, including Robyn King’s fourthplace finish on beam. The 1997 season marked the second consecutive trip by the Pioneers to the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. Denver placed seventh with five top 10 individual finishes. Jennifer White was the highest all-around scorer in 10th place. Robyn King finished 17th in the all-around competition. For the third consecutive season, Denver sent representatives to the 1998 NCAA Midwest Regionals. Sophomores Dana Mims and White

PIONEER HISTORY competed in the individual all-around and Mims finished 18th, while White finished tied for 21st. Leading the Pioneers women’s gymnastics program into the 21st century is head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. Kutcher-Rinehart has brought national-caliber experience to the program, and continues to lead the Pioneers’ progression to the national level. In her first season, the Pioneers set or tied school records on three out of the four apparatus and also set a school team score record. Kutcher-Rinehart and assistant Michael Valentine were named Region 2 Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year, respectively. THE 2000’S In 2000, the Pioneers had their best finish to date since going Division I, finishing third at the Region II Championships and missing the NCAA Championships by a scant 0.025 points the smallest possible margin. Denver still qualified its first three individuals - Sachi Ena, Jenny Ebdon and Melanie Schiff - as all-arounders to the National Championships since Donna Elliott in 1992. John Figueroa, in his first season with the Pioneers, was named Region II Assistant Coach of the Year. 2001 proved to be Denver’s coming out party on the national scene, as the Pioneers became the first small, private Leneé Berumen scored two perfect 10.0s in the same evening on school in March 30, 1996 - Denver’s first perNCAA history fect 10.0 scores in school history. to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Denver pulled off the feat by finishing second at the NCAA North Central Regional Championships, and nearly handing host Utah its first home defeat since 1979 to qualify as one of the top 12 teams in the nation. Freshman Ashley Shible became the first Pioneer gymnast to earn All-America honors in her freshman season since Heather Earl and Heidi Sjordal did so in 1983 as she earned the honor by finishing seventh on the Vault. She led the way for the Pioneers all season long, winning 23 individual events, highlighted by her all-around title in the North Central Regional Championships. Over the course of the season, Shible broke the school record in the all-around three times, then earned the first perfect 10.0 in school history on the vault on Feb. 10, nailing a
school history at the Division I level, and the Pioneers finished 10th overall, the best finish in program history. In Session II, López finished tied for first on beam to become a first-team All-American, DU’s first-ever on beam, tied for fifth on bars with a 9.9 and tied for third with a 9.85 on floor to also earn All-American honors. She competed in the event finals on beam and floor . DU earned a return trip to Nationals in 2008, the first time ever the school qualified in back-toback seasons, finishing 12th in the nation.

unique vault named after her. The 2002 season was the crowning moment of Denver’s return to the forefront of collegiate gymnastics. The Pioneers hosted the NCAA North Central Region Championships, the first NCAA event ever held in Magness Arena. Though the team failed to advance, KutcherRinehart did advance the fourth individual qualifier of her career as sophomore Ashley Shible qualified for Nationals for the second straight year. In 2003, DU sent another gymnast to the National Championships as Michelle Kasuga competed in the all-around. In 2004, Denver broke its previous school record for team score four times, setting the mark of 197.875 that still stands. The Pioneers also hosted the NCAA North Central Region Championships for the second time, finishing third. In 2005, a tough DU squad nearly upset eventual National Champion Georgia at the Southeast Regional before finishing fourth. The Pioneers nonetheless sent Huffaker back to the National Championships, making her the first gymnast in DU’s Division I history to qualify as an individual for Nationals in back-to-back seasons. The 2007 season was a watershed one for DU. After five consecutive near misses, DU headed back to the National Championships for the first time since 2001. At the National Championships, sophomore Jessica López became the first three-time All-American gymnast in
In 2009, senior Jessica Lopez and junior Kelley Hennigan represented the Pioneers at the NCAA Championships as individual All-Around qualifiers. López entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 1 ranked all-arounder. She advanced to the individual event finals on vault, taking sixth with a 9.8313. Meanwhile, Hennigan tied for 27th overall in the all-around with a score of 39.200. López also earned All-American status on vault and beam, and was honored as the 2008 Colorado Sportswoman of the Year for Gymnastics. THE 2010’S The Pioneers sent two individuals to Nationals, and the team finished in third place at Regionals in 2010. Brianna Springer and Kelley Hennigan were the individuals that represented DU at Nationals where Springer finished 11th and Hennigan finished 20th. In 2011, Springer again qualified to Nationals, this time being joined by freshman Jorie Hall, who qualified on beam. Moriah Martin qualified to three consecutive NCAA Nationals from 2012-14. Martin advanced to event finals on vault in 2013, finishing 17th. A three-time All-American, Martin also became the third Pioneer in history to record a perfect 10.0 on vault in 2013. Nina McGee made program history in the 2015 season, qualifying to the NCAA National Championships and finishing tied for second on floor. It was the highest finish for a DU gymnast at NCAA Nationals since Karen Beer in 1982. McGee also finished 11th overall in the all-around.
On April 14, 2007, DU clinched its second-ever berth in the NCAA National Championships by finishing second in the NCAA Regional in Magness Arena. The event drew a record 3,876 fans, the biggest crowd for a gymnastics competition in school history.
