The prospects of the Maritime Industry for 2023

Predictions are always risky but overall I am optimistic that 2023 will be a good shipping year. We have two contrasting forces.

One is the world’s contracting economies but, on the other hand, a tight supply of ships. So lets say these two will equalize each other.

Then we have the new IMO regulations coming into effect, EEXI and CII, which will lead to slower speeds (thus tighter supply) but not immediately; maybe after the first half of the year.

Finally, we just saw the opening of China which of course is positive for shipping. When the Ukraine war ends it will be more positive news at least for sentiment which is also important.

So in a nutshell I see the first half being steady but good with the second half improving and perhaps even touching recent historic high rates toward the end of the year.
