About Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School
As you prepare for your career in medicine, it’s important to remember that it is no longer enough to keep on top of the latest medical advances. Those at the forefront of medicine are the pioneers who can translate their passion for discovery into real solutions for the real world.
The beginnings of Duke-NUS can be traced to 2000 when Singapore launched its ambitious Biomedical Sciences Initiative designed to make Singapore the biomedical hub of Asia.
CHANGING & IMPROVING THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE
DUKE UNIVERSITY: The Singapore
Our curriculum is based on the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program offered at the world-renowned Duke University School of Medicine, with its distinctive focus on research. Students learn via TeamLEAD, an innovative team based learning platform that focuses on complex problem solving, collaboration and application.
OUR MD CURRICULUM SPANS 4 YEARS Yr 1 – Basic Science: a rigorous program generally covered in two years in most medical schools, allowing our students to begin active patient care in year 2, a full year earlier than their peers at US medical schools. Yr 2 – Clinical Rotations: students begin taking an active role in patient care as members of health care teams in hospitals and clinics. Yr 3 – Independent Research: devoted to scientific research, students are encouraged to explore their personal areas of interest. Yr 4 – Specialty Clinical Rotations: students begin to explore potential fields of specialization. At the successful conclusion of our program, students are awarded a joint Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Duke University and NUS. Welcome to Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School A joint collaboration between two educational powerhouses, Duke University in the United States and the National University of Singapore, Duke-NUS is committed to developing future leaders in medicine. Our 4-year graduate medical program is based on an innovative and highly rigorous curriculum, with the distinctive aim of developing researchers and practitioners who are exceptionally skilled in medical research and patient care. Because it is impossible to teach medical students everything they’ll ever need to know throughout their medical careers, our curriculum is a springboard, not an endpoint. We teach our students the fundamentals of medicine, research, and patient care, and how to become lifelong learners. It’s this education that will make Duke-NUS graduates leaders, creative thinkers who will improve the practice of medicine.

Specialty Training & Residency
THINK
Academically Diverse Students Future leaders in medical research and clinical care will require diverse skills and a wide range of knowledge to succeed. Education in a variety of disciplines can prove to be an advantage, bringing creative problem solving to medical challenges. While students with strong science backgrounds typically excel in medical school, students who are academically strong from other fields, including engineering, computer science, math or humanities can also be highly successful. If you have the passion for participating in the forefront of medical science, Duke-NUS could be an excellent choice for you.
Admission Requirements
After earning their MD degrees, all Duke-NUS graduates will begin their specialty training in US-style residency programs in Singapore. The first year of residency training will be at a Singapore hospital to fulfill the requirements for Medical Registration (licensure). For more on residency training in Singapore, please visit the Ministry of Health Holdings website: www.physician.mohh.com.sg/residency
A Note about the MCAT
Following licensure, students interested in pursuing a medical research career may request a position in an approved research setting in lieu of further specialty training.
All applicants must sit for the MCAT exam anytime within four years before matriculation to Duke-NUS. Results of this standardized, computer-based test help our Admissions Committee judge a candidate’s degree of preparedness for studying medicine. The test is offered through the Association of American Medical Colleges and is available on limited dates internationally. Interested candidates are encouraged to prepare sufficiently and register online at least 60 days in advance of the test date. For more information on the MCAT: www.aamc.org/students/mcat/.
Since the cost of top-tier medical training is significant, a generous tuition subsidy from the Singapore government enables Duke-NUS to offer favorable tuition rates to students of any nationality. In return, all medical students in Singapore are expected to fulfill a service commitment following Medical Registration with Singapore’s Ministry of Health. This commitment lasts four years for Singaporean citizens and five years for Singapore permanent residents and international students, and runs concurrently with residency or other specialty training. All residents will be paid and receive benefits.
The Duke-NUS MD/PhD Program For students wishing to further their academic training, Duke-NUS offers a combined MD/PhD program. MD/PHD training is most appropriate for students who are committed to intensive researchoriented careers, combining biomedical research with the practice of clinical medicine. The Duke-NUS PhD component is offered in Integrated Biology and Medicine, a unique program designed to drive research in translational medicine. Students interested in pursuing an MD/PhD at Duke-NUS may apply directly to the program. Admitted MD students may also apply at selected times during their 1st or 2nd years of study. PhD training will begin in their 3rd year. The PhD typically takes four years to complete, but timing will depend on the student’s area of research. Students admitted to the program will be offered a full scholarship for the PhD component as well as for the remaining tuition required to complete their MD training.
