TeachingLearning& Wellbeing Sustainability

The last few years have highlighted the importance of connection. So, I am delighted that on the 3rd January next year we will come together as one community; a family of nurseries, schools, colleges and Dukes Plus organisations. It will be a celebration of education, a chance to gather in person, share our collective experience and learn alongside each other.

As it says in the Dukes book Building the Crown, “When it comes to education, if your heart’s not in it, the magic just isn’t going to happen.” The theme of this conference is ‘Leading with Heart’, one of Dukes core values. During the conference we will hear from experts who are leaders in their fields, who are deeply invested in their work and believe in the power of education to transform lives.

The event on the day will have three strands, tightly focusing the talks and discussions to ensure that everyone takes a valuable learning back to their own setting.  These strands are: Teaching and Learning, Wellbeing, and Sustainability. Within these broad subject areas, there will be plenty of stimulating, informative talks for all delegates. We hope the day will galvanise you all to continue your wonderful work, empowering young people to lead extraordinary lives.

This brochure details our roster of speakers and what is on offer throughout the day.

We will also celebrate the achievements of our Dukes family members from throughout the entire organisation on the day with the Annual Dukes Awards. This is a unique opportunity to celebrate and recognise the amazing work that you do on a daily basis. Last year we received thousands of nominations for the Annual Dukes Awards There are many categories to choose from so do think seriously about who you would like to put forward for an award.

The awards are judged carefully by Aatif and the board, and this year our winners will be announced and celebrated at the conference.

You will find details on how to choose your sessions and nominate colleagues for awards in this preparation booklet. The deadline for nominations and session choices is 20th October.

PROFESSOR GUY CLAXTON

One of the main reasons why children and young people go to school is to become more skilful, confident, enthusiastic and independent learners - core competencies they will need for university and beyond. This training needs to run through from pre-prep to sixth form. Some classrooms foster this development, but many do the reverse: as exams loom, they make students progressively more dependent, timid and expedient. This talk explores in practical detail the differences between these two types of classroom, and offers suggestions for strengthening a deep learning culture that any teacher, whatever their phase or subject, can implement straightaway.

Using Psychologically Smart Questions to Improve Learning

BRADLEY BUSCH

The right question has the ability to focus attention, enhance curiosity and accelerate learning. This session will look at the evidence around the different types of questions you can ask, the optimal timing of your question and how to increase the likelihood of getting an answer to them. This includes areas such as retrieval practice, pre-questions, elaborative interrogation, cold-calling and wait times.

Why is anti-racist practice important in the early years

As children are growing and developing it is our job, as early years educators, to help them form a positive sense of themselves and the people in the world around them. If we are committed to safeguarding and a duty of care we need to acknowledge that for some children how they navigate life will be impacted by their racialised identity. Ignoring the realities of racism is not a helpful approach. This 50 minute talk by award winning,anti-racist early years trainer and consultant Liz Pemberton will expand on the reasons why an anti-racist approach is an essential part of early years practice.

Embracing Vulnerability

CLARKE & CARRIE CARLISLE

Former professional footballer, Clarke Carlisle battled depression and mental illness throughout his career. Clarke is joined by his wife Carrie to share their deeply candid and personal story of their journey together. Known for his eloquence and candour, Clarke will share the depression which dogged most of his adult life and professional career. Clarke shares his story, and his road to recovery, while wife Carrie shares her side and the impact it has had on her too.

10 Principles for Inclusive Leadership

DR NICOLA CROSSLEY

Inclusion is a priority, but how do leaders actually become inclusive?

In this session, Dr Nicola Crossley shares her work in the area of Inclusion and navigates the audience through a number of key areas of inclusion, providing context and understanding, helpful definitions, examples of leadership in action, and ten essential principles of inclusive leadership. Nicola discusses what a culture of inclusion should look like: in classes, in schools, and in the education sector more widely.

The Hundred Year Life

TIM MUNDEN

It is predicted that people born in the developed world today will live on average to the age of 103. This increase in life expectancy has huge implications on how people will live – their education and careers particularly – and on their priorities. Living and working with purpose, lifelong learning and wellbeing, and rethinking value and wealth, are some of the changes educators and leaders need to focus on to enable the 100 year life.

Self Esteem & Meeting the Demands that life Throws at Us

MANDY SALIGARI

Using 30 years of her personal and professional experience as a therapist Mandy breathes life into the day to day demands we all face with refreshing clarity and humour. She emphasises the importance of our relationships with ourselves as pivotal in our interactions with others both at home and at work, the roles we are set up to play from childhood and how we have more choices than we realise about our quality of life. Mandy illustrates the thought provoking link between vulnerability and the influence of fear that can unconsciously prevent us from banking the self esteem we all seek and want to pass onto our children. She places ‘selfcare as self esteem in action’ at the heart of her approach fostering a respect that frees up communication to become curious and unconditional, reduces the negative impact of stress and makes that feeling of running on empty a thing of the past.

Serving our Pupils

TEACHING & LEARNING PANEL

“Serving our pupils is at the heart of what we do in Dukes. Whether in nurseries, schools, colleges or Dukes Plus we are all united in our moral aim of ensuring the very best for the children gifted to our care. Professor Guy Claxton is a world renowned expert on cognition and learning, Dr Nicola Crossley is a leading expert, practitioner and author on inclusion & neurodiversity, Bradley Busch is an HCPC registered psychologist and the director of InnerDrive helping pupils develop a successful mindset and perform under pressure and Abigail Foster is the founder of Elent a finance education platform.

Steve Frost (CEO of Included) stated that ‘Unless you consciously include, you will unconsciously exclude”, so we will explore ways in which this happens and how to consciously be effective in what we do, by leading with heart!

EYFS PANEL

Early years teaching is in a period of significant change, from navigating the pedagogical approaches best suited to getting the best out of our youngest charges to dealing with the challenges of the day-to-day. From recruitment and staff retention to providing sustainable and suitable SEND support and finding the right balance in navigating the ever-changing demands of our diverse parent cohort, the list of challenges is ever-growing.

Chaired by Rik McShane, the panel will focus on discussing possible solutions to key issues facing the early years’ industry knowing there is no easy one size fits all solution.

NATASHA EELES

Conversations about sexism and harmful sexual behaviours have become more pressing than ever in the last year. Sparked by the viral Everyone’s Invited website and subsequent Ofsted review into peer-on-peer sexual abuse, this is a topic that has been propelled to the forefront of the education sector with much of the responsibility falling on schools to tackle these issues. At Bold Voices, we have worked with over 20,000 young people, staff and parents in the past year to deliver education on gender inequality and gender-based violence, with a particular focus on centring and amplifying pupil voice. This session will outline the key issues to be tackled and what we’ve learnt about the challenges and advantages of pupil voice as part of a holistic solution for schools.
